Ryley Mayor Brian Ducherer states the Village has had a rough year, but he added the large crowds and success of the Village’s Sports Day turned the corner away from it on June 17.

“We had fantastic crowds and I think it was one of the best Sports Days the village has ever put on,” he said.

Ducherer, who admits to enjoying cooking hot dogs, said he probably cooked and served between 400 and 500 dogs to give away to the crowds that gathered at the Community Hall following the parade which started the day.

The parade ran through the village’s main street where large crowds of children raced to gather up candies tossed by parade participants.

Following the parade, activities swung into full gear at the Community Hall where the Camrose train gave rides around the village, kids raced three wheeled tricycles around a track, and others played in bouncy castles and slides, and safe archery lessons and a mini golf game were held.

“It’s a day we put on for the kids,” added Ducherer.

“Overall it was an absolute great day.

Kids lined both sides of Ryley’s main street as the Sports Day parade passed by on June 17, with many participants tossing candy. As the parade came to an end there wasn’t much of a gap between the parade floats and the kids waiting to pounce on any candy coming their way.

Sports Day Continued from Front “It would be nice to have some sports going on during the day, but we just didn’t have enough time to organize anything,” he added.

“With what we got without the sports I thought we did a great job and I was very happy with it.”

He said there was a sports day last year which “was Ok, but nothing like this year.”

Following the events at the Community Hall, there was a beef dinner put on

by the Agriculture Society which drew a large crowd.

“We wanted to draw the community together and I think we did a good job of that,” added Ducherer.

“There was a dance following the dinner and then it concluded with a 15minute fireworks display.

“They were absolutely phenomenal,” said Ducherer. “I saw them from a distance and they were still awesome.”

He added the Village covered costs for the fireworks.

“This is something we do for the people,” he said. “And I think we did an awesome job.”

Over 100 for Ryley Sports Day Supper Kari Janzen Staff Reporter

A roast beef supper was enjoyed by all who attended the meal on Saturday, June 17 at the Ryley Community Hall.

The dinner is prepared annually by the Beaver Heritage and Ag Society during the Ryley Sports Day weekend.

Roast beef, baked potatoes, salads, and baked beans were on the menu Saturday evening.

The Beaver Heritage and Ag Society has been putting on the supper for over 20 years.

Colleen Stensrud, Ag Society board member, commented that the Society

doesn’t “try and make money at this one, it’s just to give back to the community.”

Ryley Pool Manager and the event coordinator of the supper Susie Williams said the same. “It’s always nice to put on an event like that for the community because the community does so much for us.”

Over 100 people came out for the meal, although Williams noted that past dinners enjoyed higher attendance.

“There used to be more people who were readily available to come because there used to be lots of ball teams. The last few years there have been no ball tournaments.”

A Ryley Sports Day Supper was held at the Ryley Community Hall on Saturday, June 17, hosted by the Beaver Heritage and Ag Society. Over 100 enjoyed the meal, which was served buffet style and included a delicious roast beef.

West Wind celebrates 20 years of veterinary practice Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

West Wind Veterinary Hospital, who serve the Sherwood Park and Tofield areas, kicked off their 20th anniversary celebrations June 14 with hospital tours and prize giveaways. Office Manager Krista McKinney said the tours give people a chance to see the facility and how much they have grown.

“We're having an open house so that our clients can come in and have a tour of the back because things do change over the years (and) people who've been on one of our tours before are like ‘wow, you've changed a lot’,” she said. “(We have) gift baskets and prizes, and then we'll have ongoing opportunities to win prizes through our Facebook page for the next couple of weeks because our actual anniversary date is July 3.”

Dr. Deb Carroll was a vet for 12 years when she was approached by a friend in 2003 who asked her if she would be interested in starting a horse surgical clinic in the area.

“Back in 2003, a friend of mine came to me and said we need to build a

horse surgery practice because there are no horse surgeons in our area. I said no. I already had a practice in Sherwood Park,” said Carroll, explaining she eventually changed her mind.

“I sat and thought about it for a few

days. And I called her back and said, Yeah, okay, let's do that. So we did.”

Carroll, along with veterinarian Jody Santa Rosa and surgeon Gareth Fitch, began work at the hospital. Carroll said it took a year and a half from the inception of the idea and building a business plan to making it come true.

At the time, Carroll said there was only one other horse surgery facility in the entire province located in Calgary, while now there are several. She added that their vet hospital has changed over its first 20 years.

“When we first started, we were quite unique in terms of what we did.

Now we have morphed into more general practice (with) small animal and not only horses. It's nice to be here for small animals too,” she said.

Today, Carroll’s hospital has also grown from three initial veterinarians to six plus seven registered veterinary technologists and five support staff.

Carroll said growth for the hospital was inevitable.

“We see about 100 horses a week and maybe a few more. We also do a lot of field calls going into people’s farms and barns,” she said, adding the clinic does not do cattle work.

Meanwhile, the hospital is also focusing on educating their clients and making it easier to access services through special clinics held onsite such as the equine dental clinics and the dog blood donor clinics.

“I think being part of the community is very important, so we have to do whatever we can to make that part of life better for everybody, and if that means hosting a blood donor clinic so that some animals can benefit and some people can really contribute to their community by letting their pets be the donor, then we've done a good job for them,” said Carroll.

Another achievement, Carroll said, is that the hospital is AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) accredited.

“They have a rather stringent set of standards to comply to and they have regular inspections to make sure that you're keeping everything up to snuff.

I think we're the only AAHA accredited rural practice in our area for sure,” she said, adding the hospital has been AAHA accredited for the past seven years with inspections happening every three years. West Wind’s next inspection is due in Aug.

Last Thursday, the grad class participated on their final field trip of high school to West Edmonton Mall, with a total of 33 individuals on the bus.

The grad executive had voted on ideas of what the class would like to do with the leftover money raised for their

grad and decided on going to West Edmonton Mall as a way for the class to get together one last time before they parted their separate ways after exams.

Students were allowed to go to the Galaxyland Adventure Park with the ticket bought by the grad class, and were also allowed to roam the mall as they pleased.

As the exam week starts and a start to the assembly, Principal Zenovia Lazaruik shared some reminders to all about the upcoming exam week.

She continued with showing the school the graduating class slideshow as well as saying a farewell to those moving on next year.

gency Department will remain closed overnight until later this summer, according to a press release issued by Alberta Health Services. AHS explained that the new

Continuous masking is no longer required at any Alberta Health Services facility as of June 19, according to a press release issued June 15. The release stated the rescinding of the mask mandate applies to all patients, families and visitors as well as contracted staff, physicians, midwives, students and volunteers.

AHS said the decision was based on several factors including declining COVID-19 cases, testing positivity rate, wastewater data, and hospital admission rates for respiratory illnesses across the province.

“(We’ve also consulted) stakeholders including patients, families, advisory councils, clinicians and frontline managers,” said the release.

Although masks are no longer required, appropriate types of masks and PPE (personal protective equipment) will still be available for people to wear if they want.

AHS also encourages visitors or designated family support persons who have had respiratory symptoms to wait to visit loved ones until 10 days after symptom onset, and all visitors and support persons are recommended to mask when visiting symptomatic patients or residents.

nursing hires are being oriented to the site and the emergency department is expected to reopen for overnight service later this summer.

“Successful recruitment over the last several weeks has led to eight new RNs and two LPNs currently in orientation,” explained the release.

“Orientation of new staff is vital to patient and staff safety, and is an important part of staff retention.”

The department has experienced ongoing overnight closures since Dec. when the first closure was announced Dec. 1 with a reopening date stated as Jan. 1 due to staffing issues. The date has been pushed back every month since then.

Several neighbouring communities expressed concern over the past few

months with the ongoing closures, prompting the town of Tofield to write a letter, signed with support from Ryley, Viking, Holden and Beaver County, to the provincial health minister asking for advocacy in reopening the department overnight.

Tofield Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Jeff Edwards said, during an interview in May, that the ongoing overnight closures were concerning as it puts additional pressure on ambulance services.

“Not only is that putting additional strain on the ambulance services, but that’s also increasing volume for our neighbours at these other facilities,” he said. “The ambulance services are being requested to do transports to other facili-

ties, such as Viking, Lamont, Vegreville, Sherwood Park, and Camrose. The rationale (in) having a letter brought forward is to have the Health Minister hear the concerns of the region and hope that there might be an ability for some advocacy or, nothing less, a response provided.”

Edwards added that the provincial election may delay the response from the newly appointed health minister, but he is confident the letter will be responded to.

For now, AHS said the department will remain closed from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. seven days a week and will reopen from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with emergency medical services being diverting patients to facilities in Camrose or Viking for emergency care as needed.

Second Targets for Tots raises nearly $14k for Stollery Staff Reporter

The second annual Targets for Tots fundraiser was held at the Beaverhill Sporting Clays June 10 and raised nearly $14,000 for the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation. The second annual Targets for Tots fundraising event, in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, was held June 10 at Beaverhill Sporting Clays attracting 70 participants and raising nearly $14,000. Organizer Nicole Loitz said the event is close to her heart, stating that she started the fundraiser last year as a way to give back to the Stollery Hospital for the care they provided to her son, Easton, who was born in 2019 with a heart defect.

“When he was one month old, he got diagnosed with a large ventricular septum defect (VSD), it's just a big hole in his heart, and we were told that he would need to have open heart surgery to repair it,” she said. Loitz said that Easton had his first surgery at two months old and the family expected to be at the Stollery for up to 10 days and then recover at home, but things didn’t go according to their plans.

“Unfortunately for us, he ended up having quite a few complications after the surgery. He required two more surgeries while we were there, and we ended up living in the Stollery for 38 days before we could come home with him and stay home,” she said. Loitz said the experience left a lasting impression on her and her family.

“I still get choked up talking about it. It was just a lot,” she said, adding that Easton has made a full recovery with a pacemaker and is looking forward to starting kindergarten this year.

“I’m just so grateful (for) the Stollery and the care they provide there. The specialists they have are top notch amazing and after everything with my son, I felt like I wanted to give back.”

Loitz said she looked at several ways to participate in a fundraiser and settled on incorporating a

hobby she enjoys; clay shooting.

“The owners (of Beaverhill Shooting Clays) were very supportive,” she said. “People who are beginners and want to come out and try it, people (are there to help), and donate their time, so you don't have to pay the cost of having a guide to come up with you. Beginners and seasoned shooters are welcome. It's a really fun day.”

Prizes were given for the top three shooters with first place going to Gus Lange, second place was Martin Usher, and third place went to Jim Carmody. In addition, a silent auction, 50/50 draw, and barbeque were also included at the event with the support of several organizations including Tofield Packers.

Targets for Tots raised just over $17,000 last year and nearly $14,000 this year. Next year’s event is already in the planning stages with a date set for June 8, 2024.

OPINION JOHN’S RANT Well it would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall as our Premier Danielle Smith met with Justin Trudeau lackey Jonathon Wilkinson, Minister of Just Transition, on Monday in Calgary.

Smith has publicly stated she wouldn’t tolerate Ottawa’s interference into Alberta’’s affairs and along comes Wilkinson to do just that.

Smith said prior to the meeting on June 15, when Wilkinson introduced the Canadian Sustainable Jobs Act which will work its way through parliament as Bill C-50, “…the primary purpose of the proposed ‘Sustainable Jobs Act’ is to form an advisory council that will provide the federal government with recommendations on how to support the

Canadian workforce during transition to a ‘net zero economy.’ " Smith went on to present the case that development of Alberta’s natural resources are provincial in nature.

“As the development of Alberta’s natural resources and the regulation of our energy sector workforce are constitutional rights and the responsibility of Alberta, any recommendations provided by this new federal advisory council must align with Alberta’s Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan,” stated Smith “To be clear, if this new advisory council provides the federal government with recommendations that are inconsistent with Alberta’s Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan

or otherwise interferes with our province’s constitutional jurisdiction over the development of our natural resources and regulation of our energy workforce, Alberta will not recognize the legitimacy of those recommendations in any manner.”

Meanwhile elsewhere on June 15, a Ukrainian oil firm was asking for Canadian expertise to aid in the further development of Ukrainian oil and gas fields. Obviously the country, at war with the Russians, recognizes there still is a future for oil and gas.

He boldly hyped about how he had sat on the focus group that had developed the framework of the Act. “Today, I responded to the federal government's new Sustainable Jobs Act. Our Premier claims the Act attacks the Alberta economy.

The truth is just the opposite: it creates a framework to help us prepare for the future.

“It acknowledges that workers, Indigenous people and other members of civil society have an important stake in the outcome of big economic decisions – and it says ordinary citizens deserve to have a say in those decisions,” McGowan crowed.

He said the energy transition is not coming; it’s already here. The bill is about “preparing us for a future

that’s going to look different than our past.”

Alberta NDP leader Rachel Notley said in a press release that the provincial government is missing an opportunity to be at the table to fight for Alberta by picking a fight with Ottawa and going in their own direction.

“Alberta can continue to be a global energy leader for decades to come, but we need the provincial government working with industry and other levels of government in the interests of Albertans,” she said in a statement. “There are billions of dollars in investment looking for decarbonization opportunities; Alberta must create the stability and certainty to capitalize on that investment.”

Then the day passes without a drop of moisture dampening the ground.

We’ve been given numerous ‘warnings’ about thunderstorms, some accompanied with addi-

tional ‘special’ warnings – ‘heavy rain, risk of hail (one said, ‘golf ball sized’), strong, gusty winds and dangerous lightning.’

I almost suggested to Hubby that we board up the windows, cover our vehicles with industrial strength bubble wrap (available on Amazon) and clear out the dust bunnies to make room for me to cower under the bed but then I thought, why waste the energy – unless you counted the smoke from the wildfires, the sky was cloudless. Liar, liar, pants on fire!

It’s so dry that our lawn has stopped growing. The trees are still green but the only thing between the hanging pots and a withering death is Hubby’s watering system which he’s turned up to twice-daily

feedings. Meanwhile, our once prolific yellow lilies are just sprouts in reverse gear trying to head back into the soil.

As I sit here today I’m waiting for the skies to darken with the promise of another ‘severe thunderstorm watch.’ Nothing so far.

But our son sent us pictures of another gullywasher in the city, which poses the question, why are they stealing our thunder?

Because this isn’t the first time this has happened. It’s like the city’s tall buildings which I’ve heard can create their own weather (all those car exhausts, an abundance of concrete and sweaty bodies).

Not to mention the hot air surrounding the parliamentary buildings that sucks up

all the moisture before it can reach us. Greedy, or what?

The farmers (and our little lawn) need rain far more than city streets and indoor malls do so give your country cousins a break, why dontcha.

But wait, I hear some rumbling outside. Not a passing train – its thunder!

Can rain be far behind?

Well, yes, one day recently there were mean-looking clouds overhead, then loud, rolling thunder filled the air constantly for over a half hour. No rain, just a big tease. That’s probably what this is as well.

Oh, scratch that. It’s not the thunder gods preparing for a flood or Mother Nature moving furniture around.

Just Hubby’s tummy complaining. It’s past his lunch time.

Dear Editor; Driving to the family farm in Strathcona County last month took us right through the heart of the Camrose electoral district.

our values, so we found it interesting that we felt pushed toward voting NDP; away from any other party and their followers who would show such blatant disregard for property.

The Tofield Eyecare team was declared the winner the tournament.

Umphrey described how Beaver County Victim Services loves to be part of the community, living and serving among residents and appreciates the support raised through the Ron Robinson Memorial Tournament.

The total amount raised this year was $7,505. All proceeds from the event will go to victims of crime and tragedy.

The weather was beautiful on Friday, June 16, for the Beaver County Victim Services (BCVS) Ron Robinson Memorial Golf Tournament.

“This is our biggest fundraiser for Victim Services,” said coordinator Jaylynn Umphrey.

There were 10 sponsors for the tournament this year, receiving two complementary golfers for their teams. Fourteen teams consisting of 56 individuals were teeing off in support of BCVS at the Tofield Golf Course Friday morning.

Golfers were treated to several refreshment stations to choose from including watermelon, shish kabobs, burgers, and as one golfer mentioned, a new favourite, nachos and cheese.

Fourteen volunteers were out in the sun, of which many are board members of Victim Services.

County anxious for real repairs at S.H. 834 rail crossing Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Council was given an update on how repairs to a difficult railway crossing for motorists just east of Tofield was progressing.

Motorists encounter the crossing at Secondary Highway 834, located just north of Hwy. 14. CN performed an emergency repair on the problem in April but county councillors stated at their June 7 meeting that the problem remains.

Aimee Boese, general manager of community services, provided an update to council on the status of the situation, which resulted from the construction of an earlier bypass route for S.H. 834 around the Town of Tofield.

“This included the construction of a new route with improved road width and numerous intersection improvements,” stated Boese, in her report to council.

However, an adjustment to the rail crossing on S.H. 834 just north of Hwy. 14 was also required.

Alberta Transportation informed the county in September 2021 that the result of the work could be traffic “bottoming out” as they go over the crossing.

“The potential hazard was a result of the angle at which the crossing was constructed and the depth of the asphalt,” Boese stated.

Alberta Transportation installed some interim new signs and a reduction in the speed limit to 35 km/hr.

“There have been numerous concerns raised about the rail crossing at this highway location since its construction,” she said. “The county has also been made aware of an incident in mid-February when someone was seriously hurt at this highway location while travelling over the crossing in a vehicle.”

Boese informed council that administration is working with CN and Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors.

Both departments are working together on the issue, she said, and TC has asked CN to correct the work done on the crossing in April.

She stated that “the rail company is responsible for the rail, with the road authority…responsible for the maintaining of a smooth and continuous crossing for vehicles.”

She added that, “Transport Canada is aware of the specifics for this situation and is working with CN on a repair.” She noted that the initial repair done in April had resulted in a deterioration rather than a fix of the problem.

“The county will continue to communicate with CN and the province with respect to the necessary repairs to make this crossing safer for the travelling pub-

lic,” said Boese.

Councillors began discussion on this topic, with Councillor Lionel Williams (Division 2) asking if administration “has any idea when the repairs wil be done.”

He also stated; “What repairs CN has done made the crossing exponentially worse, (and) has a great impact on people, people are upset.

The longer it goes the worse it will get.”

Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1) told council he used the rail crossing coming to the meeting that morning and said that a driver “could wreck their vehicle” going more than the reduced speed limit.

Smook spoke with CN officials at the recent Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) convention in Toronto, and said the CN is aware it is a safety issue at this crossing.

“In normal circumstances Alberta Transportation is responsible for the road leading up to the tracks,” said Boese. “But because CN did the emergency repairs, Alberta Transportation and CN will work together to come up with the right solution.”

This means that “because we’re not the road authority, the county has to rely on Alberta Transportation to work with CN.” But Williams called the situation “a disaster,” noting that “undercar-

riage issues are happening,” with vehicles going over that crossing.

“Hopefully we get a resolution,” added Smook, “because there are people going over (that crossing) all the time.”

Councillor Barry Bruce (Division 4) referred to other railway crossings under repair in the county, and asked if the county follows up on CN’s work “to check what they are doing.”

The short reply was “no,” the county does not do that as it is not its jurisdiction.

“We have another meeting with CN at the end of the month,” said Chief Administrative Officer Kayleena Spiess.

Smook stated that, at the meeting with CN at FCM, four or five issues were discussed. They “will look into when whistle cessation will happen,” he said, refer-

ring to the requests made by the county for train whistles to cease blowing at three railway crossings within the county.

Boese said the county has done its part by sending letters to CN Rail which go to Transport Canada for

approval. Once that happens, she said there is a 30-day waiting period.

Spiess said she will “touch base” with Boese to determine if they couldn’t get their CN contacts “to speed things up a bit,” regarding the issues discussed at council.

Wayne Nyback’s bylaw officer contract renewed

Wayne Nyback of Rural Bylaw will continue to provide bylaw enforcement services for Beaver County until the end of the year.

Nyback had his contract extended after investigating some of the county’s outstanding bylaw concerns over the previous three months.

His is now the Bylaw Enforcement officer for Beaver County as of June 7.

Nyback already provides bylaw enforcement to the Town of Viking, as well as other towns and villages in Flagstaff County and elsewhere.

He was recruited by the county in March to respond to some outstanding bylaw concerns, but also to handle animal control complaints.

“This contract was on a trial basis for a three-month period to see how the contract process would apply to these services and if a contract would meet the needs of the county,” explained Aimee Boese, general manager of community services.

At the time Nyback was appointed Animal Control Officer under the Bylaw 99-810.

She reported to council June 7 that the contract with Nyback “met all the county’s expectations and administration recommends that the contract be extended until December 31, 2023.”

She added that the service delivery within the enforcement area of Beaver County could be revisited for possible renewal during the budgetary process for 2024.

Boese also informed council that she has been appointed the designated officer for enforcement of municipal law under the Municipal Government Act, and for Nuisance and Unsightly Premises under the county’s Bylaw 02-839.

Alberta wildfires cause councillor to rethink callout fees Patricia Harcourt

The recent devastating wildfires and resulting loss of homes and other property in the province has caused Division 4 councillor Barry Bruce to envision a more uniform way of charging for firefighting services.

Bruce gave county council notice he intends to introduce a resolution at the June 21 meeting that he feels would be fairer across the board when it comes to invoicing for fire protection.

At the June 21 meeting, Bruce stated he will introduce a motion “to direct administration to prepare a resolution for the August RMA District 5 meeting regarding a uniform fire protection service fee throughout Alberta.”

Bruce said that people forced

to evacuate due to wildfires are able to apply for financial help from the government.

However, in the situation where a single house is on fire and the local fire hall is called out, Bruce said the resident will be billed for that service, citing a sample fee of possibly $100,000.

“I’d like to see some kind of equity across the province,” he said, calling this a discrepancy that should be fixed.

Bruce said the charge should be uniform in nature as happens with ambulance calls, where a person is billed $300 if the ambulance has to go a block to pick up a patient or miles away from the EMS site.

“Why should it be any different for a fire? he asked, stating the fire callout system should be modelled after the ambulance system.

That way, those calling for fire protection “would avoid those life changing bills people get after a fire…

“But the county can’t do it alone, it has to be a provincial program,” he said, stating the county doesn’t have the tax base that cities have for providing more fire halls to protect the population.

With fires “getting more severe…We have to make things more welcoming as they are now with the ambulance system.”

And he wanted the motion, if passed by the county, to go forward and be heard at the Rural Municipality Association’s District 5 meeting in August.

There are potential hazards to the public and to vehicles during the construction process. This can include heavy machinery, dust or mud, road material such as gravel, asphalt coatings, and rock chips.

HWY 834 (NORTH OF HWY 14) RAIL CROSSING Many of you have travelled the rail crossing on HWY 834 north of HWY 14, and it's not been a good experience for the last few years. As HWY 834 is a provincial highway owned by Alberta Transportation, and the crossing is owned by CN Rail, the County is not the designated authority for completing repair work. We have however been pushing for a resolution as the crossing sits within the County and affects our residents.

Two seats up for grabs in Ryley by-election John Mather Staff Reporter

The Ryley by-election scheduled for Aug. 14 will now be to fill two seats on council.

The second seat became open after former Deputy Reeve Nola Wood-Herrick submitted her resignation to Ryley Chief Administrative Officer Julie Brownridge.

Wood-Herrick previ-

ously submitted her resignation to Alberta Municipal Affairs but was told that couldn’t be accepted and it had to be submitted to the local CAO. Former Mayor Nik Lee had done the same thing because, as he told CBC in an interview last week, he didn’t recognize the CAO or the changes on council that had made Brian Ducherer appointed as

the new Mayor and Lyndie Nickel as Deputy Mayor following a council vote in February.

Lee was formally removed by petition after the majority of residents signed a petition seeking his removal from office.

According to Nickel the by-election will now see both seats filled during the same by-election which will save the

community the costs of separate by-elections.

The top two vote getters in the by-election will claim the open seats, she said during Ryley Sports Day June 17.

Nickel added if only one person ran in the by-election then a second by-election would have to be held.

Nominations for the Aug. 14 by-election close on July 17.

Rodger William Foster began his life on June 5, 1929 in Peace River, son of John and Mabel Foster.

His sister Sheila was born four years later. It was in Peace River that Rodger’s parents learned Bible truths and were baptized as Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The family moved to Edmonton where they ran a small trucking company. Rodger was 14 when he was expelled from school for not saluting the flag (he would only worship God not his country). He then began driving truck making deliveries.

Thus began his love of driving. Throughout his life he farmed and also drove school bus, gravel truck, and also sold vehicles at Vegreville Dodge, John Deere and Viking Ford. He would not wear a Dodge Hat or Jacket … only Ford or John Deere. He had his loyalties.

In 1951, he met and married Emily Kelm.

They raised their four children on a farm near Bruce, AB. Throughout his life, Rodger and Emily taught their children Bible truths and endeavoured to live by them. Rodger would take every opportunity to tell his neighbours about the future hope of the earthly paradise and about his loving Creator, Jehovah.

Rodger had little in a material way but what he possessed he was willing to share with others. He was a character and could be dramatic at times but he had a good sense of humour and enjoyed joking with people. He was a self-sacrificing, faithful, loving man who truly cared about others and would do what he could to help them.

He is survived by his wife Emily; children Daniel (Laurie), Gary (Julianne), David (Crystal), Sharon (Tim); grandchildren Ryan, Justin, Chelsey (Nathan), Joshua, Brendan, Rebecca (Craig), Jonathan (Shawna), Marcus (Marcy), Timothy, Thomas, Tanner and Tyler (Addriana); great-grandchildren Ethan, Rhodes, Gunner, Alexis, Emerson, Lukas and Owen.

Rodger was predeceased by his sister Sheila and his parents Mabel and John.

Tofield to hold one meeting in July John Mather Staff Reporter

Tofield council debated briefly, June 12, what date to eliminate one July regular council meeting.

Initially the council had prepared to cancel the July 24 meeting.

“Typically we cancel the second in July,” said Mayor Deb Dueck. “Are we still looking at cancelling July 24 and meeting July 10.”

Deputy Mayor Harold Conquest agreed adding if necessary the mayor could call a special meeting if it was needed.

But both Mayor Deb Dueck and Councillor Brenda Chehade both had prior commitments and couldn’t make a meeting if it were to be

held July 10.

Dueck added they did have a second June meeting later this month so it would be easy to cancel the

July 10 meeting.

After discussion, council voted to cancel the July 10 meeting and meet for the regular meeting on July 24.

Local entrepreneur gets the spotlight at chamber meeting Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

Town of Tofield entrepreneur Courtney Coulombe was the guest speaker for the Chamber of Commerce’s monthly meeting June 7 held at the Diamond Restaurant. Coulombe, who owns Planit Events, also runs Market 192 who, for the second year, will be setting up every Tues-

day from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Last year Coulombe set up the market at Countryside Storage while this year she will be set up on Main Street, in front of the Tofield town office, starting June 20.

Coulombe said she moved to the area with her husband and children in 2021 after starting her event planning business in 2015. She shared her entrepreneur-

ial spirit with the Chamber members by explaining her businesses including how she coped with the lack of event-planning business during the COVID pandemic years.

“During COVID, I created another kind of side (business), because obviously events were dead, and I couldn't do anything for two years. So I created ‘Decor Crate’. It's

basically a crate that shows up on your doorstep (filled with) one-time single use party stuff,” she said. “(All of the themed items) you spend hundreds of dollars on at Party City, whereas our crates are $75 and it comes to your doorstep.

(You) use it and (we) pick it up the next day.”

Coulombe said the crate business was very busy during COVID but has not been used as much since restrictions were lifted allowing for big events to move forward.

In terms of Market 192, Coulombe said several vendors are signed up and she is anticipating a successful year.

“There are 11 (vendors) confirmed (and

more coming),” said Coulombe. “We have Maple Park Farms, one lady with home décor, (and others) with cookies and cupcakes, veggies, beef jerky and canned goods.”

Coulombe said the Market also will be set up during Promenade Aug. 11 which means the following Tues., Aug 15, the market won’t run.

“We found last year,

the week after promenade (it wasn’t busy). I think there was 10 people that showed up,” she said.

Meanwhile, Coulombe said one of her newest vendors is a specialty popsicle maker known as ‘The Popsicle Priest’.

“He does handcrafted, different kinds of popsicles so I’m looking excited to see him,” she said.
