The Town of Sedgewick was host to some very popular country stars on Friday, June 3, at the Wild Rose Co-op Recreation Centre. A large and enthusiastic crowd gathered to hear the sweet country and a couple of rock and roll tunes from the two opening artists, Jimmy Whiffen and Sweet Tequila. The big performance of the night came from the Canadian band Emerson Drive, who were welcomed by a roar of the crowd. Later after the show, an after party was held at Branch 55 with Sweet Tequila performing a few more songs at the venue.

Precipitation welcome in region Leslie Cholowsky Editor With very little precipitation at the end of May across the province, surface soil moisture ratings as at May 31 ranged from 36.5 per cent poor in the south, to 30.9 per cent excellent in the Peace region.

North East Alberta rated just 6.1 per cent poor, with 41.7 per cent rated fair, and 45.3 per cent good, with just 3.2 per cent rated excellent. Unsurprisingly, no regions posted excessive moisture.

At the end of May, Spring Wheat, Dry Peas, Flax, and Potatoes all hit 100 per cent seeded, with Canola not far behind at 95.2 per cent for the North East. Barley and Oats seeding lagged behind slightly at 89.6 and 84 per cent respectively.

According to the May 31 Alberta Crop Report, 64 per cent of crops in the north east region have emerged, one of two regions ahead of the fiveyear average.

Post-emergent spraying is just getting started, with just three percent of acres applied.

Gophers and flea beetles are being reported as three per cent over threshold.

The North East region has the most commentary on flea beetle prevalence amongs crop reporters.

Pasture and tame hay conditions are both rated as 88 percent fair to good, which is slightly higher year over year from 2021.

The Agricultural Moisture Situation Update published May 31 advised that most areas of the province

will need moisture soon, with the exception of the central Peace region. June is typically the wettest month of the year across most of the province.

Late spring frosts hit in many regions, with temperatures in the -2 range at the end of May.

Precipitation trends are well below normal for large areas of the province south of Red Deer, but are rated just slightly below normal moving north to the Yellowhead highway.

Amisk Mayor Bill Rock declares his intention to seek UCP leadership Leslie Cholowsky Editor

On Thursday, June 2, Amisk Mayor Bill Rock made public his intention to seek the leadership of the UCP Party.

Rock has received approval from Elections Alberta, but says the next step is registering with the Alberta UCP Party.

Rock says he’s one of five candidates who have filed so far, including Travis Toews, Todd Loewen, Brian Jean, and Danielle Smith.

As the only rural candidate, Rock says, “The cities have the same problems we do. I really believe we have to close this gap between rural Alberta and the cities. We all have the same

problems, whether we are big cities or small towns: infrastructure deficits, funding, mental health; it’s all a matter of scale.

“I’ve been advocating for rural crime, and libraries, and infrastructure for so many years now. I’ve been a voice, and I feed a lot of information up to my MLA and my MP. “ Rock is presently on his third consecutive term on Council in Amisk. “I’ve been advocating for many years as a small-town mayor. I looked at it, and looked at who some of the other candidates were going to be, and thought, ‘I could do as good of a job, if not a better job, because I have a lot more life experience.’

“I’m a small business owner, with

two small businesses, I’m the mayor of a town. The problems we have here are all scaleable.”

At the recent Battle River Summit held in Hardisty, Rock spoke about what he felt was a lack of high level, well paying jobs for women in rural Alberta. “They keep moving those jobs to urban centres through centralization.”

Until he announced his intent to seek the party leadership, Rock served on MLA Nate Horner’s board, resigning after he filed his Elections Alberta papers. He plans to continue as Amisk’s Mayor.

RCMP cracking down on bullying and intimidation There was some pretty shocking news coming out of Nanton this week where RCMP responded to multiple complaints about a large group of youth who were bullying and chasing a 13-year-old girl throughout the town.

After an investigation, police said there was a long history of inappropriate behaviour with these youth and the victim, where a line had been crossed into criminal behaviour.

This past Friday, June 3, RCMP arrested and charged six youth, five 14-yearolds and one 15-year-old.

They are facing a total of 10 criminal charges between them. All six were charged with intimidation, three with Mischief, and one with Uttering Threats.

Nanton Detachment Commander, A/Corporal Tom Nairn, stated “The investigation revealed a long history of inappropriate behaviour involving most or all of the persons charged.

“It is unfortunate that multiple past warnings were ignored and that the issue elevated to this level. The RCMP takes bullying and related criminal offences serious and will continue to protect the community and victims from such.”

Edmonton Police Service says, “School life is being transformed by mobile phones, the Internet, and social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.).

“Kids as young as six years old are learning and playing online, teenagers are speaking a new language through texting, and students now have an entire World Wide Web to draw from when doing homework.

“While the majority of these interactions are positive, there is a dark side.

Bullying is an age-old problem for students, but the anonymity of Internet communications is bringing the harmful practice of bullying online, as some kids (and adults) are using these communication tools to intimidate and threaten others.

“Cyber bullying occurs when a child, preteen or teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen or teen using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones. Cyber bullying involves minors on both sides, or at least has been instigated by a minor against another minor.”

“Some forms of online bullying are considered criminal acts. Under the Criminal Code of Canada, it is a crime to communicate repeatedly with someone if your communication causes them to fear for their own safety or the safety of others. It is also a crime to publish a "defamatory libel" - writing something that is designed to insult a person or is likely to injure a person's reputation by exposing him or her to hatred, contempt or ridicule.”

“Parents need to be aware of what their children are doing online. Police suggest talking to your children about responsible Internet use and asking them about the websites they visit and apps they use. When necessary, use parental control software to block specific sites.

“Teach your children to never say or post anything on the Internet that they wouldn't want the whole world, including you, to read or see.

I don’t know how things got so out-of-control in Nanton without intervention from the community, the parents of the youth who were charged, or the police, but it is deplorable that things got to a criminal stage before action was taken.

They say it takes a village to raise a child, and we all need to play a part in that, whether it’s in our own households, or in the community, to take bullying seriously, and do all that we can to prevent it, whether it’s happening in person, or online.

There were 23 members out at the Legion's steak supper on Thursday night. It was nice to see Ken and Anne Clough.

There were 12 of us in church on Sunday; it was the Sunday of Pentecost. Laura Towers led the service, reading a meaningful message from our past moderator, Reverend Richard Bott.

Friday night there

was a break-in at the Rec. Centre. Entry was gained through the back door of the meeting room and it seems that cupboards and stuff were all gone through. A mess was made with only a small amount of petty cash missing.

Julia FeItham and I spent Saturday at Jay Walkers in Camrose in the Friends of Battle River Railway booth.

Breann Oberg, a new member of the volunteer team, came from Meeting Creek to help.

We passed out a lot of brochures.

This week is the Alberta Women's Institute Provincial Convention in Camrose.

Julia Feltham, Vickie Cloakey, and I will be attending. Julia is France delegate, Vicky is convention secretary, and I am president.

On Monday afternoon we will have a tour of the Bailey Theatre, the Jenny and Peter Lougheed Theatre, and a tour and tea at the Camrose Railway Museum.

Vision and Encompass credit unions to merge The Boards of Encompass Credit Union and Vision Credit Union are pleased to announce that members have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the proposed merger between the two neighbouring credit unions.

Members cast their ballots at a Special Meeting of Members held on June 1 for Encompass members, and June 2 for the Legacy Vision membership, and returned a majority vote in favour of the union.

After years of collaboration as neighbours, the Boards of Directors of both credit unions launched a comprehensive due diligence process early in 2022 to explore the viability of a merger.

This membership vote followed the Board’s approval of that business case.

Subject to government approval, the two credit unions will combine their operations on November 1, 2022, under the banner of Vision Credit Union.

“We’re thrilled members of both Encompass and Vision credit unions put their trust in us with this vote,” said Glenn Friesen, Board Chair for Vision Credit Union.

“We pursued this merger because we believe that we can build a stronger credit union for today’s rural Albertans, and for future generations.”

Doug Callaghan, Encompass Board Chair added, “Uniting as one credit union provides the opportunity to take advantage of shared technology and member services, while continuing to focus on the specific financial needs of the people in our neighbouring regions.

“This merger will help us deepen our partnership with our members, employees, and the communities we serve.”

“By bringing these two well-established and values-based credit unions together, we are positioning ourselves to succeed in today’s competitive environment,” said Kelly Longley,

Dayland’s Seniors Sunbeam Drop-In Centre celebrates 40 years Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday mornings, from June 2 to 4, the Daysland Seniors’ Sunbeam Drop-in Centre celebrated its 40th anniversary.

The original side (the north side of the building) was purchased by the Seniors in 1980, and construction started during the spring and summer of 1981. “Most of the building was beyond renovation,” said a story in The Community Press Feb. 11, 1981, “but 24x30 feet were saved and will be added to in the spring.” An addition was added around 2008 featuring a full kitchen and the floor curling area.

The club predates the Drop-In Centre by years, and prior to having their own space, met near the arena.

Prior to beginning the project, the Seniors canvassed the community to raise funds, starting in 1979, as government grants were available on a matching basis, according to the Daysland History Book.

The funds were used to purchase the building, then the club went after grant funding again over the years, for renovations and improvements.

The first event held in the new Centre was an Easter supper, March 31, 1982.

The official grand opening was held June 2 that same year.

The Centre has been well used since then, hosting floor curling and card tournaments, and serving as a meeting

place for its members.

Current President June Rittammer says the last two years, during COVID, have been some of the toughest for the Centre. She says grants from the Town of Daysland and Flagstaff County helped the club continue to meet its utilities and other expenses while the doors remained mostly closed to members and to the community.

“We had intended to hold our anniversary two years ago, from the date of purchase, so this is really our 40th plus two,” she says.

Rittammer says this year’s celebration was reorganized to meet the anniversary of the grand opening, and is followed by Alberta’s Seniors Week.

The event was also marked by a three-day silent auction, with many unique items up for grabs.

Rittammer says there are now around 44 members, and she’s pleased to see eight new members who’ve signed up recently. Membership eligibility starts at age 50 and up. “We are always on the lookout for new members.”

The Sunbeam Centre is open weekdays from 9:30 until around noon, for coffee and cards, with floor curling on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

She says club members are looking forward to hosting members from the Flagstaff County region once again when crib and floor curling tournaments begin.

Well, hello folks. I hope you enjoyed your sunny weekend.

At our farm we were busy with our yearly branding event. We are lucky to have a large family: grandsons and friends who come out to give us a hand when they are able.

In my eyes branding is not for the faint of heart and requires quick thinking, quick movements, and strong muscles. Cows are never predictable and those little calves are quick and weigh more than you might think!

made it out for three quarters of the day, but then had to race back to Camrose to his son Ethan's soccer game.

What a dedicated Dad. His son's team, the Camrose Vikings, won and got gold. Congratulations to a proud son and dad, too.

I am the chief cook and bottle washer of the branding crew. Our menu was 8 oz. beef steaks (well marinated), rice, fried perogies in light bacon grease with thick crumbled bacon, and, of course, sour cream and mashed potatoes. There was also a huge romaine lettuce with a multitude of veggies and champagne salad, lemon pie, and chocolate cake. I put a huge tray of fresh buns layered in swiss cheese

in the oven on broil. I wanted them fresh and the cheese bubbly. Well, it was bubbly all right. I forgot all about them till they started smoking and were crispy black!

How bloody annoying, but the dessert and coffee made up for the lack of buns.

That wretched wind yesterday was hard on the branding teams and for the cook it was hard to keep the barbeque at an even temperature.

Every time I lifted the lid some flame would get blown out. Oh well, we all survived and our bellies are full.

We received our town "Hardisty Happenings," newsletter and it is full of upcoming events. The town-wide garage sale, St. Paul's pancake breakfast, the Father's Day Li-

brary free craft event, The Ag Society parade of golf carts and food, the Hardisty Fire and Rescue annual golf fundraiser, and, the grand event, our rodeo and parade. It looks like a fun summer ahead.

Please remember to advertise in the paper to get the news out to the entire area if we want really good turnouts.

We will also have swimming lessons at Hardisty Lake and the United Church Lake Camp is also welcoming campers again.

Thank goodness life is starting to appear to be normalizing. Stay safe and continue to sanitize your hands when you enter a business. How many folks used the basket or buggy you are using? Did they pick

their nose, forget to wash their hands after using the toilet, or cough into a kleenex that did not totally hold the snotty contents? Yesiree, this happens all the time.

That bit of alcohol might just be your saviour.

How many of you have cruised the countryside and smiled at Mother Nature? The beautiful lilac bushes are in full bloom along with the white saskatoon bushes.

The countryside is green too and we all have our flowerbeds filled with plants. Now we hope the wind dies down and we get some gentle rain. No hail please.

As I am typing this column I have the shopping channel in the background.

The babes are busy selling jewelry on "a jewel of a deal." Sometimes they rattle on and on and it gets rather nauseating, but you have to give them credit. They are live and have to describe their products with so many adjectives.

Did you know that diamonds are divine, dazzling, delicious, dancing, and decadent? Or diamonds can be scintillating, sparkling, stunning, and striking. These girls must have had an A+ in English class, eh?

Flagstaff and District 4-H Beef Show an achievement for all Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Another Flagstaff and District 4-H Beef show is in the bag, but the bidding is still going strong, as the online auction remained open until late Tuesday, June 7.

The show started on Sunday, June 5, at the Forestburg Riding Arena, with the Cleavers and the Females.

Sunday’s judges, Lee and Dawn Wilson, put the region’s club members under scrutiny as they went through first the Cleavers, with Iron Creek and Battle River beef clubs showing a total of nine calves.

Then the yearling heifers took to the ring, with Hastings Coulee, Iron Creek, and Battle River members each show-

ing off their projects.

That was followed by the Hastings Coulee two-year-old Cow/Calf; the Iron Creek two-year-old Cow/Calf, the Iron Creek three-year-old Cow/Calf; and the Battle River two-year-old Cow/Calf and three-year-old Cow/Calf.

Five 4-H members from two clubs, Iron Creek and Battle River, also showed in the herd class.

Sunday’s Grand Champion Female award went to Kade Rancier from the Iron Creek Club, with Reserve Champion to Lexi Dietrich from hastings Coulee.

Sedgewick couple delays camping trip after surprising discovery Mary Jane and Randy Hedeman in Sedgewick did what a lot of people do on the May long weekend. They went to bring the RV out to prep it and officially start the camping season.

This year, however, they realized there was something quite different about their RV. The Hedemans discovered that not only had a mama robin built a nest on one of their RV’s tires, but it contained four beautiful blue eggs!

Mary Jane says, “We

changed our camping plans a bit and we are letting Mama raise her

brood mostly undisturbed. There are now four hungry fledglings

in the nest. We are hoping to get them out and into the world soon!”

MJ and Randy Hedeman decided that this summerʼs camping season will have to be delayed, after discovering not only a nest, but four beautiful robinʼs eggs atop one of the tires on their RV.

Men’s baseball seasons well underway in the region Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Battle River Baseball League has six teams this season, with Amisk, Czar, Castor, Coronation, Killam, and Viking.

Three weeks in, Amisk sits atop the league with

three wins and no losses, with Coronation in second place, and Killam, Viking, and Castor in a three-way tie for third.

Czar sits at the bottom with a 0-3 record.

Games are played each Wednesday, with June 8 seeing Amisk in Killam,

Viking in Coronation, and Czar in Castor.

The Battle River Rivals are playing in the Powerline Baseball League this year, which includes Vegreville, Rosalind, Armena, Tofield, and the Camrose Roadrunners.

Emerson Drive wows the crowd in Sedgewick

The first opening artist at the Emerson Drive concert at the Sedgewick Wild Rose Co-op Recreation Centre on Friday, June 3, was Canadian Jimmy Whiffen who likes to tour all across our country to sing his country and rock tunes.

Dweet Tequila had the crowdʼs attention with their great choice of songs to play during their set at the Emerson Drive concert. They played some original songs, along with a cover of the ever popular song “Shallow” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, as well as ending their set to “Donʼt Stop Believing” with a crowd singing right along.

Emerson Drive were the stars of the show, getting the crowd off their feet when they hit the stage. This is the first concert for the Alberta band in two and a half years. They played many of their record hits as well as performing their newest song “Every Girl That Got Away.”

beginning to fail us.” In his own family, he sees issues with teachers not having job security, with oneyear contracts that leave future planning hard to do.

“The same is happening with Alberta Health Services. They bring in nurses in rural areas, and they move on because they can’t get a full-time position here; there’s insecurity there. I believe these are positions that need to be secure.”

He recounts a story about a Hughenden healthcare professional who worked in Sedgewick and Provost at two part-time positions to make a living. “With gas so high, she would be forced to make a difficult decision, if she still lived here. Instead, she moved to Edmonton where she could get a full-time position.” He adds, “A single mother, or whoever, can not make a living on a 0.4 position.”

Rock says he thinks the Province is failing rural Alberta on pipelines and oilfields. “We set up a war room in Calgary to combat the misinformation about the oilfield, and I don’t believe they have done an effective job of this. Alberta has the most environmentally friendly, and socially acceptable energy in the world. And it’s the cleanest energy.

We are not getting that information out.”

He also thinks the federal government pushes too hard for green energy without seeking solutions for future recycling that will have an impact in rural Alberta. “If you have 360 acres of solar panels that have to be taken down for whatever reason, there’s no place for those things to go but the landfill.”

He’s serious about his campaign.

He says Elections Alberta’s new rules make an election fairer, in terms of both campaign donations, and in terms of the party setting a financial cost to run.

“I think in this election you’ll see more grassroots support for candidates. I have an unknown name in that circle of politics, but I don’t have an unknown name in advocating for rural Alberta. I’ve stood up at past AUMA, now Alberta Municipalities, conferences and spoke out.

I know a good percentage of MLAs, and I’ve done that on behalf of the village, of our people here. When we’ve had issues, we’ve been able to access the resources that we’ve needed.”

He thinks he’s fairly well known up and down Highway 13, as well as through his worked with the Parkland regional library board.

He says he’s put himself in the provincial landscape advocating for rural Alberta and its issues. “I did an advocacy talk for the Alberta Library convention two years ago. I think there are a lot of people across the province that when they see my name, will know me. I have a lot of friends around rural Alberta.”

Earlier this year he was part of a delegation from the Hardisty and District Development Group at the UCP convention to advocate for rural east central Alberta.

He says at the start of the COVID19 pandemic, the province downloaded a lot onto municipalities.

“But I will give the current government credit for how they handled the pandemic, especially in terms of securing vaccine supplies to ensure anyone who wanted a vaccine could get one.”

He feels that he’ll be able to run his campaign while maintaining both businesses and his mayoral duties.

He also plans to run on his own merits, and his ideas and campaign platform. He has no plans to run a negative campaign. “I don’t believe in that. You just want to be better than the other person. I supported Danielle Smith; I supported Brian Jean. I believe in the democratic process. When it went to a vote, for the Wildrose and Conservative merger, I went along with the major-

“The only thing that may turn me off of the UCP if they, for no good reason, deny my eligibility.”

Approval from Elections Alberta means he can raise funds, spend money, and announce his intentions to seek the leadership, but only the party’s leadership committee can set the rules within the party.

He says it may be some time before those rules are known to any of the people who’ve entered the race.

“They haven’t come up with how this leadership campaign is going to look, they haven’t set what the de-

posit will be, they haven’t even said who is going to be eligible.”

He’s not aware of anything from past leadership campaigns that will be a big issue. “I think it’s going to be a big number to put the deposit down. But I think I have enough people that I know who will back me, depending on how big the number is.”

Rock says the next step will be fundraising, and getting his platform set, in anticipation of the party’s leadership committee coming out with its criteria for the leadership race.

Coronation RCMP charge two youth suspects On June 2, Coronation RCMP received a report of a break and enter into the Value Drug Mart in Coronation.

Through the investigation two youth were identified, items stolen including prescription / non-prescription drugs, watches and other items which were recovered and the suspects were taken into

custody.

The suspects names will not be released as they are both young offenders.

As a result of the investigation Coronation RCMP have charged both youth from Coronation with the following charges: • Break and Enter to a Business

• Theft under $5,000 • Mischief Damage to Property • Possession of Property obtain by Crime under $5,000.

The youth were released from custody by a Justice of the Peace without conditions with a court appearance on June 10 at Coronation Provincial Court

OBITUARY

Anna Mary McIsaac (nee Gabriel)

Anna Mary McIsaac (nee Gabriel) was born on October 22, 1944 in Viking, AB. She passed away the evening of June 4, 2022 in Edmonton, AB due to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Ann grew up spending summers on the farm and winters in Viking. She attended school in Viking, and then McTavish Business College in Edmonton. She spent several years working in Edmonton and Calgary for trucking companies where she met her husband Peter McIsaac.

They were married in Viking February 4, 1967. Ann, with her family, return to the farm in 1972 where she resided for the remain-

der of her life raising cattle, geese, chickens, pigs, and appaloosa horses. The farm was her passion.

Ann was predeceased by her parents Victoria and Louis Gabriel, her husband Peter McIsaac, and first cousin Frank Gabriel of Bigger SK. She is survived by her daughter Lori Farley and life partner Gary Ellis of Calgary, son Joe McIsaac of Calgary, daughter Mary Lou and son-in-law Shane Grove of Bowden, son

Mike McIsaac of Forestburg, grandson A.J. Grove and life partner Ashley Stoltz of Edmonton AB, grand daughter Marta Grove of Halifax NS, first cousin Marlene Gabriel of Rosetown SK, and numerous family and friends.

A life celebration will be held at Prague Hall Saturday June 11 at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Viking Food Bank, or a charity of one’s choice.

Sharleen Chevraux was just a young girl when her maternal grandmother taught her how to embroider and crochet.

She looks back on those days with a special fondness.

“I did a lot of crafting with that grandma,” she says, noting that her grandmother was also an avid quilter.

“I have some of her quilts and love the quilting that she did. And, of course, she did it all by hand.”

As happens in life, Sharleen eventually became busy with her family and career, and didn’t do a lot of crafting – until her mother developed a penchant for quilting years later.

“I kept telling myself, ‘Well, when I retire someday, I will quilt with Mum,’” Sharleen recalls. “And then she was getting older and I didn’t know how long I was going to have her, so I thought, ‘I’d better get started now.’”

Sharleen took her first quilting lessons under her mother’s tutelage, learning how to chain stitch, how to iron properly and some of the basic patterns.

Sharleen was hooked and soon started taking formal quilting classes.

“In the end, I got to quilt with my mum, and my granddaughter for a while. Mum quilted until she was 97 years old. She lived to be 100-plus, and her eyesight had faded for the last

three years so she really couldn’t quilt. But I have her last quilt,” says Sharleen, a retired high school teacher.

“My granddaughter quilted with us for a while. She’s now disappeared out of the quilting world. Maybe she’ll come back to it eventually, but yeah, I started quilting because of family interests. I love quilting. It’s my happy place.”

In June 2010, the self-described “quilting addict” opened Crafty Creations Quilt Gallery on Killam’s Main Street.

The full-service quilt shop offers a unique combination of fabrics, kits, patterns, books and quilting notions to take on any project, as well as the full line of highly recommended and sometimes hard-to-get DMC embroidery floss.

“We also have ready-made quilts, table runners, placemats and other products that have been premade that people can come in and purchase if they don’t want to make their own,” Sharleen adds.

In addition, there are many classes taught at Crafty Creations throughout the year for all skill levels in the spacious classroom area to the rear of the store.

Coming up June 14-16 is a retreat for “people with no quilting or sewing backgrounds at all who’d just

like to try it out,” says Sharleen.

“After three days, they’ll go home with a completed quilt and some new skills.”

Crafty Creations, now a Main Street fixture known for its personal and friendly service, is also the home of Material Girls Longarm Quilting, a separate business featuring a longarm computer quilter on-premises and run by skilled operator Deanna Maertz.

Sharleen invites all customers to purchase a $25 annual membership in the Crafty Creations fabric club, which entitles the member to 20% off fabric, notions, kits, patterns and books. (Classes and handmade goods are excluded from the 20% discount.)

Customers are also encouraged to sign up for the Quilter’s Quips newsletter that goes out twice a month.

Crafty Creations is open four days a week, Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Besides the Killam storefront, Sharleen operates an online shop at

craftycreationsquiltgallery.com, which features the stories behind some of her quilts because “every quilt tells a story.”

Goodbye, and thank you This will be my final column for Community Press as I have retired from the County as of May 31.

I have really appreciated the opportunity to communicate to the public through these columns and by other means. I also really have enjoyed the feedback I received from the public from them.

So often, in my career, there was little response from the work I did and it has been very enjoyable hearing from you.

Looking ahead to the summer there are a number of issues that you should be on the lookout for. Flea beetles are probably snacking on some of your canola seedlings, or soon will be.

Watch out for grasshoppers as they start to emerge later on this month. They are a potential problem for summer and can quickly work their way into a field.

Hopefully, none of you have noticed bare patches in the field from either cutworms or wireworms. You need to be out there scouting your fields, looking into any suspicious patches where the crop isn’t or where it was.

Diseases in-crop, shouldn’t be much of a problem unless it gets a whole lot more humid and wet. If you use fungicides, do it only if it makes sense because of weather conditions or if you detect signs of disease starting up from the lower canopy. Don’t be fooled by natural dying off of lower leaves due to other factors such as drought or just wearing out.

Weed control is now on many producer’s minds. Keep in mind that herbicide resistance is a real problem and getting worse with every year.

Wild oats are becom-

ing a huge problem in some areas and many fields in the county already have populations of wild oats resistant to Group 1 and Group 2 herbicides. Rotate your chemical groups, not just the chemical trade names.

Silage or putting in a hay crop are still excellent ways to reduce weed populations.

However, you either need cattle or a neighbour willing to work with you.

Despite record high crop prices, don’t remove all the bush in the county. It does serve a

need and provide some ecological services to the growing crop and for society at large.

If, for no other reason, keep a few bush patches around to cut the wind.

Above all stay safe while doing your farm work. And here’s hoping we continue to get timely rains and producers can continue to prosper in our communities.

As the farming community goes, so goes the community at large.
