Forestburg sweethearts are this year's winners Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Diane and Carl Jahns dropped by The Community Press office last week to pick up their prize as the winners of the 37th annual Sweethearts Draw.

The pair received a prize package valued over $600 from participating businesses from all over Flagstaff County.

Carl entered Diane’s name at a participating businesses in Forestburg.

When they came in to pick up their prizes, Carl mentioned, “It was Feb. 16 40 years ago that we had our first date.”

What a way to celebrate!

With a record number of babies featured in our annual Babies of 2021 edition, we had to acknowledge it with a record number of winners.

Jack Burden, along with his parents Melissa and Travis Burden, won the grand prize of a two-year subscription to The Community Press, and a $50 gift certificate from Coutts Home Hardware in Forestburg.

Along with the Burdens, four other families received a one-year subscrip-

tion to The Community Press: Levi Dickson, Lewis Steel, Beklyn Bitzer, and Maverick Bosshard were the runners up. Winners were chosen by random draw.

Wheat Kings ousted, finish season with much to celebrate

After a back and forth series against the St. Paul Canadiens, the Killam Junior B Wheat Kings’ season came to a close in the sixth game of the semi-finals, with a 5-1 loss at home.

The Wheat Kings were even coming into the weekend, 2-2, playing strong against the Canadiens. On Friday the team travelled to St. Paul and put forward a great effort, but came away with a 4-3 OT loss, making Sunday’s game back in Killam a makeit-or-break-it final.

Friday saw Carter Burton score the Wheat Kings’ first goal, in the second period down 2-0, assisted by Trey Forster.

Kobe Charchun scored the tying goal, from Burton and Brandon Zunti, then a goahead goal from Kyler Bergseth and Derek Zimmer to enjoy a brief lead until St. Paul scored near the end of the period to head into the third in a 3-3 tie.

Wheat Kings goalie Ty Marcinkowski fended off 15 shots on goal in the third, to Killam’s three shots against St. Paul. Neither team was able to score, forcing an overtime period.

St. Paul managed to score in overtime to take a 3-2 lead in the series.

The two teams met for the final time on Sunday, March 6, in Killam.

St. Paul took an early lead with two goals in under four minutes, adding a third later in the period to take a 3-0 lead in the game.

Despite out-shooting the Canadiens in the second period 10-7, neither the Wheat Kings or Canadiens could score in the second.

A power-play goal early in the third period put St. Paul ahead 4-0.

Landon Kelndorfer put the Wheat Kings on the scoreboard mid period, assisted by Ashton Kelly and Zunti, but despite out-shooting the Canadiens 15-13 in the third, a final goal from the Canadiens brought the game to a 5-1 final, and the series to a 4-2 close.

Head Coach Bob Charchun says, “I'm very proud of our year and the effort that was put forward by the players right until the final minute of the season.

“Excuses aside, multiple injuries sustained all at once played a significant role in the end of our season. We had guys playing that shouldn't have been playing that really grinded through and others that were playing way more minutes than was planned.

All of this impacted our final outcome. We had

several APs come in and do a terrific job for us as well.

“The heart and determination shown by all players was an absolute treat to be a part of. I have so much respect for these guys.”

The Canadiens will go on to face the Wainwright Bisons, who took out the Vermilion Tigers in four straight games to head into the finals.

Charchun is already looking forward to next season, with some thoughts about the last couple of years. “I was so happy that our kids had the opportunity to play this year and enjoy being part of a team again in somewhat normal circumstances. I think it was an enjoyable year for them.

“It was an honour to work alongside Nick, Murr, and Travis leading these young men night in and night out.

“Based on the potential of many returning players, next season looks to be very promising.

“Our organization is in a good place, Our graduating players, Tim Lynes, Derek Zimmer, and Brendan Erick have been tremendous for our program.

“Their leadership and experience will be missed-just real good kids who were very good in the room.”

The season is over for the Killam Junior B Wheat Kings, but head coach Bob Charchun has nothing but praise for his team, who he says put their hearts and bodies on the line in the final series against St. Paul. Above, official 2021-22 Wheat Kings team photo.

Killam RCMP hosting shredding fundraiser Lougheed Editor

March is Fraud Prevention Month, and to mark it, the Killam RCMP Detachment members have come up with an idea that will not only help local residents dispose of sensitive documents safely, but will also help out Flagstaff Victim Services.

Sgt. Colin Thorne says Admin staff Deb Albers came up with the idea, and they were going to do it earlier this year when he recalled that March was Fraud Prevention Month. “It fits

better this month.”

Thorne says he’s seen it done by other detachments, where in bigger areas will bring in a shredding truck, but for this event, they plan to use their own shredder.

It is meant for individuals only, not for businesses, and the total is limited to what will fit in two bankers boxes.

Fraud prevention experts say that to protect against identity theft, individuals should shred as thoroughly as businesses.

This includes ATM receipts, credit card bills, bank statements, expired

The Wavy Lake 4-H Club (Strome) had their organizational meeting on Oct, 17. We held elections and set up different committees. Our club has both Beef and Horse projects again this year. We have a total of 13 members.

The Beef project had their weigh in on Nov. 7 at Rawes Ranches located

by Strome.

The Horse project has been having a couple rides.

They also had a fun

workshop making horse cookies on Dec. 20.

We planned to have our Public Speaking on March 72.

We are also hoping to plan a project tour day sometime in April to see how everyone is making out with their projects.

Hon. Damien Kurek, M.P., Battle River-Crowfoot Kurek Calls for Government Response to WE Charity Scandal

Thrilled with provincial budget Last week was a good week for our province. It started with a great Throne Speech setting the tone for a busy session and an agenda full of optimism. Two days later, Finance Minister Travis Toews tabled Alberta’s first balanced budget since 2014.

Given the previous government’s spending patterns, even with energy royalty revenues what they are today, based on their 3.5 percent increase in spending each year of their term, this budget would be a $6 billion deficit.

COVID-19 made the fiscal situation challenging but I want to thank Minister Toews for his work to steer us out of the red. It takes more than improved royalty revenues to balance a budget. I know families in the Camrose constituency do their best to balance their home budgets. They rightfully expect their government to do the same.

I would also like to point out that Minister Toews told the house that annual corporate tax revenue is expected to be $400 million higher than the previous government’s with a tax rate that is four percent lower than what the previous government.

Our government has done a great job making our province an ideal place to do business again. What we are seeing is a boom in the tech sector, including record private investments in this booming industry, and billions invested in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, and more.

Healthcare capacity and funding is a major focus of Budget 2022, following the challenges presented by the pandemic.

The budget commits a total of $3.5 billion for health facilities, equipment, and IT systems to expand healthcare capacity for Albertans no matter where they live and create thousands of good-paying jobs.

This includes $133 million over three years to upgrade and expand hospital operating rooms and departments as part of the government’s commitment to provide everyone the surgeries they need within clinically recommended wait times.

As we focus on moving forward, our government will continue getting more Albertans back to work by providing $600 million for Alberta At Work. The new initiative will build skills for the future though skills training and education for K-12 and post-secondary students, address barriers to employment for women, Indigenous peoples, and other under-represented groups, and make Alberta an internationally recognized technology and innovation hub.

We will also continue creating jobs now by funding major upgrades to road infrastructure. Budget 2022 is a blueprint for strength, for prosperity, and for hope in Alberta for years to come.

The government has worked hard, but Albertans have worked hard too, and we have all of you to thank for adjustments that have been necessary. Alberta is back!

I also heard from many constituents regarding their concerns with electricity rates. We heard in the Speech from the Throne that the government is acting to protect consumers from higher utility costs by introducing a natural gas consumer protection program and by bringing forward new legislation to modernize the electricity market.

As you know, Alberta’s electricity rates are market driven. If you are looking for more cost certainty, you can request a contract for a fixed rate. Overall, I have to say I am very optimistic about our province’s future!

On Thursday, Member of Parliament for Battle River - Crowfoot Damien Kurek presented a motion to Ethics Committee, calling for answers on the WE Charity scandal, which happened in 2020.

When presenting the motion, Kurek stated that he often hears from constituents and Canadians who are concerned that we don’t have all the answers in the WE Charity situation.

In a statement posted on social media later that day, Kurek shared his thoughts on the motion, “Canadians are still waiting for answers on the WE Charity Scandal.

“With the calling of last summer's unnecessary election, the report that dug into this was never tabled… but today I presented a motion to the Ethics Committee that, if passed, would ensure that Canadians get to see what’s in this report.”

“Known officially as, Questions of Conflict of Interest and Lobbying in Relation to Pandemic Spending, this report investigated the massive sole-source contract for a student grant which was awarded to friends of the Prime Minister and his family members.

“The scandal famously caused former Finance Minister, Bill Morneau, to resign his position both in cabinet and in Parliament.

Concluding his post, Kurek wrote, “Now more than ever, accountability is needed, and Conservatives will continue to fight for it! I will be sure to share more details when this is debated in the coming weeks.”

On Friday evening Karin McCracken, Donna Chalifaux,Vickie Cloakey, and I went to the High on Pride concert that was the first night of the 2022 tour with Curtis LaBelle in Castor. There were about 50 chairs set out in the hall but only about two dozen people in the audience.

I remarked when I came in that it should have been better advertised. The promoter told me that they had been on social media for some time, they put posters around town, they went to all the businesses in Castor. The moral of the story is you can't ignore advertising in the local newspapers.

We will be advertising for the Meet Your Neighbour Night in April and the Town-wide Garage Sale also in April, both in Alliance.

Karin McCracken has sold her house. She has to be out by the end of April.

The people buying are from Ontario. Karin is moving into the back corner unit of Lysne Manor.

I see an up for sale sign on Marilyn Korth's trailer home and also one in front of Lorne Goodrich's trailer home. A for sale sign has just gone on Norma French Heslep's house at the other end of town. It is definitely a hot real estate

market.

All the fresh snow has made it difficult getting around the country roads and in some of the neighbouring towns. Fortunately Alliance has Wayne, our streets have been cleared as soon as the snow comes down.

We had to have a change in the Pulpit Supply on Sunday because of the snow. Laura Towers did a very able job leading us in worship.

Lisa Naraasen gets the keys to her home at the end of the week. She has been busy packing up to move from her mother's house.

The library book club is reading "My Year Abroad" and I'm not the only one finding it difficult to read.

It has a lot of big words and words that aren't often used in our daily lives. I think a lot of book reviews are done by friends of authors who are impressed with high falutin vocabulary.

Julia Feltham and I went to Camrose on Monday to pick up the Spring edition of the "Home and Country” magazine put together by the Alberta Women's Institutes.

On Tuesday, Avril Harder and I went to Red Deer, where I left my purse in the bar were we had lunch! I didn't miss it until I got home. As soon as I phoned, the server said,”You're looking for a purse.” A friend picked it up for me and I will get it on Thursday when Grace Reister and I go down to

inspect Rosann's new apartment.

The WI meeting was on on Tuesday this week to coincide with International Women's Day

March 8, and District 3 Conference at noon. We will had lunch and then our monthly meeting. The roll call was ‘A handicraft I am doing.’

Premier promises relief for gas prices, electricity Leslie Cholowsky Editor Premier Jason Kenney announced Monday that he was urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to “Stop his April Fool’s Joke on April 1: a carbon tax increase of three cents per litre on fuel,” but in the meantime, said that the Province was acting to bring relief to Albertans on the cost of fuel as well as on their electricity bills.

The Province will stop the collection of the provincial fuel tax, effective April 1, to offer Albertans relief from current high fuel prices.

That means the provincial government will stop collecting 13 cents on every litre, while the federal carbon tax rate on gasoline will increase April 1 from just under nine cents to just over 11 cents per litre.

Despite filling all available seats on Forestburg’s Council in the October Municipal election’s Nomination Day, resulting in a fully acclaimed Council, the resignation of Gerald Caron will result in an election to fill the vacant Council seat.

As of the close of nominations for the byelection, three people put nominations forward and will compete for the single vacancy on Council.

The three nominees are Dianne Anderson, Robert Frizzell, and Aaron Martz.

Voting will take place on Tuesday, March 22, at the Forestburg Municipal Office between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Kenney said the reduction will be tied to the price of West Texas Intermediate, on a sliding scale, where if prices slide to $90 or above per barrel, there will be no fuel tax, but if it drops below $80 per barrel, the full tax will again apply. It will be reset on a quarterly basis and applied if current pricing continues.

Kenney also announced a $150 rebate

for electricity that will be applied as soon as possible. It is meant to apply to January, February, and March 2022 electricity bills; $50 per month for a total $150.

He said that rebate will be applied directly on electrical bills.

“We are working to get this done as soon as possible,” he announced.

OBITUARY

Evelyn Marianna Kueber (Milani)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Evelyn Kueber on March 6, 2022, in Killam, Alberta, at the age of 91.

Evelyn Marianna Kueber (Milani) was born on August 9, 1930, in Edmonton, Alberta, to Giovanni and Maria Milani, she was the eldest of two children.

Evelyn was raised in Edmonton and spent time in Fairview, Alberta, teaching prior to moving to Killam in 1955 to teach at the Killam Catholic school.

Evelyn met Ed Kueber shortly after and they married on July 16, 1957, at which point they bought land and built a home six miles south of Killam, where they started a family and began farming.

Evelyn and Ed were blessed to have 13 children over the course of spending 37 years on the farm, before retiring and moving into the town of Killam in 1994.

Evelyn enjoyed volunteering and dedicated much of her life supporting numerous local causes within the Town of Killam, including volunteering at the Auxiliary hospital, Killam Senior’s Centre, and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Evelyn also enjoyed watching curling, baking, doing puzzles, playing cards/games, and spending time with her friends and family, of whom she loved dearly.

Evelyn was an incredibly good natured, selfless, devoted, thoughtful

and kind person who made a positive impact on the lives of so many in her community over the years.

She was a dedicated family woman who loved hosting large gatherings for her family, always ensuring that family was at the heart of everything in her life.

She was a bright, shining light and a gift to us all.

She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched over the years.

She was predeceased by her parents, Giovanni and Maria, her husband Ed, sisters-in-law Gen, Agnes, Eileen (Iky), and Margaret (Mag), and brother-in-law James (Jim).

Evelyn is survived by her 13 children: Joe (and Trudy) Kueber, Mary (and Bruce) Thomas, Frank Kueber, Ed Jr. (and Marina) Kueber, Virginia Kueber, David Kueber, Daniel (and Bonnie) Kueber, Terry

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Killam, Alberta.

Interment will follow at the Killam cemetery, with a light lunch and gathering of family and friends afterwards (in church basement).

Twin Oak Farms Ltd. Box 156; Lougheed 780-888-6007 or 780-385-1302 Dan and Shelly Skoberg never set out to build a burgeoning bacon business during the pandemic – it just happened that way.

The Lougheed-area farmers had been raising pigs and decided in the spring of 2020 to try making their own bacon.

“We usually get our bacon done at the butchers and it’s good, but we just wanted to try and do it ourselves and see what we could come up with,” Dan explains.

They went to work, striving to create the optimal recipe to dry cure and process bacon. After a lot of trial and error, and some fine-tuning, the husband-and-wife team eventually settled upon what they deemed to be the ideal original flavour. After more experimenting, Dan and Shelly also came up with what they considered was the perfect maple flavour.

They weren’t the only ones who thought so.

“We started sharing it with family and friends,” Shelly recalls, “and everybody was: ‘Wow, that’s a really good product!’”

Along with glowing reviews for their original and maple offerings, Dan and Shelly were inundated with requests for more.

That’s when they decided to go bigger.

In December of 2020, the fifth-generation owners of Twin Oak Farms started selling some of their bacon. In January of 2021, their first batch of bacon hit Facebook and – to their utter amazement – sold out in less than a week.

From there, it was a steep learning curve for the newly minted bacon aficionados – from nutrition labels, to

packaging, to getting government inspected. But Dan and Shelly plowed ahead, creating an inspiring made-inFlagstaff success story. And along the way, the Skobergs built a new production building, aka the bacon barn.

These days, Twin Oak Farms bacon is retailed in 24 locations across Alberta, including grocery stores, as well as some restaurants and distributors.

“We never ever dreamt that this would be where we are today,” Shelly says, noting they recently hired a local employee. “It’s definitely bigger than we ever thought.”

Consumers now have their choice of seven mouth-watering flavours: original, maple, maple bourbon, honey garlic, jalapeno, apple pie and traditional.

“The funny thing is they are all good sellers in their own certain areas,” Shelly notes. “Like, for instance, the Vegreville area is a honey garlic area. The Provost area is a sweet jalapeno area. I would think that our two top flavours would be original and maple, but for the most part, they all sell really well, just in different areas.”

The Skobergs take great pride in sourcing their products and services – everything from their pork and specialty spices to their packaging – from as many local and Alberta businesses as possible.

For instance, they get all of their pork belly from Trochu-based Sunterra Meats, which gets its hogs out of Alberta.

“They’ve been a really good partner and they’ve been a great supplier,” Dan praises. “We get good, consistent, quality products out of them. I couldn't ask for anything better out of Sunterra.”

Spices, meanwhile, are sourced from 1908 Barbeque, a Wainwrightbased business owned by Marty Yurchak and Shawn Murphy.

“They custom-build all of our spices,” Dan explains. “They’ve been really good. They create all kinds of spices out there, but they create some unique ones just for us.”

For Twin Oak Farms bacon, the only two ingredients that don’t come out of Alberta are maple syrup and bourbon. The maple syrup comes from Eastern Canada, while the bourbon comes from Kentucky.

“You can't get bourbon in Canada.

It’s only produced in Kentucky,” Dan says. “So our bourbon comes out of Kentucky, but yet again, it’s sourced from a local place.”

Twin Oak Farms, established in

1905, is located two miles east of Lougheed just off Highway 13. The Skoberg family farms approximately 3,700 acres of cropland, growing wheat, barley, oats, canola and alfalfa, as well as custom farming roughly 2,000 more acres for others. Their diversified farm also consists of a variety of livestock.

Dan, a member at large of the Flagstaff County Agricultural Service Board, says they’re poised to expand their bacon business “the best we can economically and feasibly outside of our area” in 2022.

Most recently, Twin Oak Farms bacon has been used in two local school fundraisers. The Skobergs see this fundraising involvement as a prime opportunity to help give back to a community that has been so incredibly supportive.

“Flagstaff is near and dear to my heart,” says Shelly, who also holds a

full-time position with UFA. “The people are so supportive here.

When they try the product, they spread the word, and not just within Flagstaff. They spread it amongst Alberta, B.C., and Saskatchewan. We can't go into those provinces (B.C. and Saskatchewan), but they spread the word there. They take it in their vehicles and they go there with our product.

Flagstaff is just very supportive of local businesses, and Flagstaff County has been great with their opportunities and all their programs that they do for their local Flagstaff County businesses.”

Building Blocks, the early literacy program for children between 0-5, is gearing up to be back in person. There's different groups all over the county, and therefore the return to in-person may vary for each group.

However, Sedgewick is starting its own group on Tuesdays at the library. Contact Megan Edey for more information and take advantage of this free program to get your children the best possible start for kindergarten.

Sedgewick Minor Ball is running a development camp in April.

There's a baseball and softball division. The camp will have a strong focus on the core skills: hitting, catching, throwing, fielding, and running.

The Parents for Fun in Flagstaff Society in partnership with many local businesses and organizations kicked off their family hope hunt for 2022.

Especially with the winter blues settling in around this time of year, it's important to focus on enjoyable and positive things about winter.

The hunt's theme is: “Move your mood” by practicing mindfulness, moving your body, fueling your body, expanding your mind, and building assets.

At each stop there is a package of loot and some booklets with challenges or tips about how to practice each of those five habits.

During week one the stops were the Killam sledding hill where a crazy carpet was donated by Home Hardware stores from Killam, Forestburg, and Hardisty.

Another stop was the Wooden Spoon in

Sedgewick where the prize was a package of hot chocolate mix donated by Parents for Fun and also some coupons for free hot chocolate or coffee from the Wooden Spoon.

All this was in addition to some stuff from some of the family resource agencies, like a terrific "What to do in Flagstaff County Communities" from Flagstaff Adult Learning. The Adult Learning Centre also have a pdf version of the brochure on their website for those who'd like to check it out. Or they are available for purchase at their office if you prefer a paper version.

During week two, participating families made a stop at the Forestburg Library to pick up a print-out booklet about gratitude along with a blank journal and pen.

Hello folks, well you know spring is in the air when you had snow half way up your legs and today there are puddles on the cement pad and strong gusts of wind. What footwear is a person to wear?

If any of you have lovely leather footwear, you may be swearing by now. The snow wets your boots, then you step in a puddle as you slip into the car seat.

Your feet feel cold and wet so you blast the heater on your feet. When you finally get home you are blessed with that wretched salt ring on your leather footwear. Now how are you going to get rid of that?

I have this book called, “Talking Dirty with the Queen of Clean,” by Linda Cobb. This is her solution: to clean leather apparel leather shoes, coats, purses, etc. use a soft cloth and rub it across a bar of Dove soap (moisturizing soap).

Do not over wet the article and do not rinse it either. Instead allow the leather to dry naturally and then polish as usual. Now you have shiny leather shoes again. You can thank the “Dirty Queen.”

Now if you have to remove mildew from leather, apply a coat of petroleum jelly (vaseline) and allow it to sit for four or five hours, then rub it off and the mildew is gone.

I can not quite understand the logic behind that... hmmm. Is mildew considered a fungus?... does the petroleum jelly cut

off the minimal supply of oxygen to the mildew and kill it? Now it can not live and multiply?

Who knows? I guess as long as it works, who cares, eh?

This weekend I was busy working in the ladies department at our local Thrift Shop Boutique. A little sixyear-old boy and his grandmother were passing by and the little fellow knocked and wanted to come shopping.

I told him we were closed but he and Grandma could come in and shop a bit. I did not have a cash box so they would have to have the correct change.

He was very busy in the toy department and found a plastic golf set, Grandma found a book so all was well.

I received a big “Thank you” from the youngster, and as he walked out the door he said, “Have a good day lady.” Well, you could have blown me away.

That little guy had such commendable manners that it made my day. I just had to write about it.

Manners are so very important but for many it is not a priority anymore. I decided to do a little research, so I read in my old book, “Amy Vanderbilt’s Book of Etiquette” and I also checked out Google.

They both mention that you as adults have to set an example and teach your children manners. Give them someone to emulate, imitate.

Say “Yes, thank you,” instead of “yah.” And “No, thank you,” instead of “nah.”

Say “excuse me” when you burp or pass gas and ensure they were not doing it on purpose.

Say “excuse me “ to get someones' attention or to try to pass by them.

Don't pick your nose in public and talk with your mouth full.

Learn how to use cutlery and ask for food to be passed to you and not reach across the whole table.

Hold the door open for old ladies when our hands are full of parcels and mail at the post office.

I could go on and on but you get my drift. I recall our oldest son going to a Grade 9 graduation. After the festivities he came home and said that the beautiful blonde that was in his class was not so enticing anymore.

We were curious and asked why? “Well, she eats like she is attacking an animal and stabs her meat like it might still be alive and will run away.

“She sure is no lady. I will not be asking her on a date any time soon.” He never did ask her out! So manners really do make an impression, don't they?

Now here are a few ways to say “Thank you very much” in some other languages.

The French say, Merci beaucoup ...sounds like “mairsee bowku.” The Germans say, Danke Schoen ...sounds like “Dungku shoin.” The Polish say [...weird letters I can not print] but it sounds like “gincooya chen.” (I used this in Poland so I know how it sounds.)

The Italians say “Grazie mille” ...it sounds like “gratsea melu.” So have some fun pronouncing these eh? HaHa. Enjoy your week folks, please send me some news.... Thank you!

Minor Hockey Report: Abby Krys excellent in net with 45 saves These are some of the results from Minor Hockey League games held recently.

(Please note that scores and scoring is taken from the websites, and some game scores and scoring is dependent on proper league entries.)

Battle River U11 Female Knights (3-13-0) dropped an 8-2 game in Irma on Saturday.

The teams played to a 1-1 tie after an even first period, but Irma took control in the middle frame scoring four unanswered goals. Abby Galletly scored both BR goals with Shae Freadrich picking up an assist.

Battle River U13 Female Knights (8-8-4) dropped two games over the weekend. On Saturday at Cold Lake, BR lost a 7-1 contest with Emma Galletly scoring the only goal from Dayna Ruzicka. On Sunday at Killam Agriplex, BR took an early lead, lost it but came back only to fall a bit short in a 3-2 loss.

Kate MacKinnon (1g 1a) was in on both BR goals, and Keeley Sorken scored the other. Assists went to Dayna Ruzicka and Abby Rancier.

Battle River U15 Female Knights (12-7-3) dropped two games over the weekend. On Friday at Killam Arena, BR lost a 3-2 game against Vermilion with Sural Thomson and Cabrie

Tanton scoring. Assists went to; Erika Zimmer and Emma Tuftin.

On Sunday, BR dropped another close game 4-3 at Vermilion. Down 3-0 heading into the third, BR scored three unanswered goals to tie the game with only 3:00 remaining. Vermilion scored a heartbreaker with 33 seconds left. Paige Zimmer scored twice for BR, and Cabrie Tanton added the other.

Assists went to; Kora Lefsrud (2a), Mercedeze Wildman, and Avery Dolany.

Battle River U18 Female Knights (6-10-4) split two close games over the weekend against Lloydminster. On Saturday on the road, BR scored a late goal in the first and second periods and held on for a 2-1 win. Julie Anderson and Rylee Zimmel scored for BR while Rylee and Alyssa Zimmer picked up assists. Abby Krys was sharp between the pipes stopping 45 shots for a .978 save percentage.

On Sunday at Sedgewick Wild Rose Coop Rec. Centre, Abby was at it again stopping 44 of 46 in a 2-0 loss.

Thunderstars U11 beat Tofield 6-3 on the road in playoff action on Saturday at Tofield Arena. Down 2-1 after one, TS came back to take over the game. Jules Forster (2g 1a), Brooklyn McNabb (1g 2a), and Keagan Grymaloski (1g 2a) all had three point games.

Also connecting were Connor Porter, and Lucas Stribbell, while Ryley Zimmer collected an assist.

Davin Pfeffer got the win in goal.

On Sunday, at Onoway TS dropped in for a 5-4 victory. Thunderstars led 5-1 before Onoway began a bit of a comeback. Layne Zimmer and Lane Bjorge had three point games, both scoring and adding two assists. Keagan Grymaloski (1g 1a), Jules Forster and Ryley Zimmer also scored.

Brooklyn McNabb picked up an assist. Davin Pfeffer got the win in goal.

Battle River U11 Knights dropped a 5-3 playoff game against Whitecourt at Killam Arena on Saturday. Scoring for BR were; Jake Grant (1g 1a), Duncan Kueber, and Hudson Sparrow. BR was scheduled to play two more playoff games on Sunday but no score was posted.

Battle River U13 Knights dropped two playoff games over the weekend.

On Saturday at Athabasca, BR lost a 9-5 road game after getting off to a slow start. Bradley Skoberg had a five point game including a hat trick.Other scorers were; Beckett Thomson (1g 3a), Ty Cherowka (1g), Tate Crawford (1a), and Mason Lewis (1a).

Flagstaff’s front line workers deserving of praise and respect Leslie Cholowsky Editor

With most pandemic restrictions lifted last week, on March 1, it feels very much like we are finally returning to normal, whatever that looks like.

Some restrictions still exist at health care facilities and continuing care settings, in that masks are still required, but the province has recognized

that access to support and companionship from family and friends is ‘essential to resident mental and physical health and wellbeing.’

That’s no surprise.

During most of the past two years, healthcare workers have risen to the challenge, not only caring for their patients and residents, but rising above and beyond the call of duty to fill those mental health and well-

being needs.

Through photos and videos and stories, we’ve seen time and time again how hard they’ve worked throughout the pandemic to keep spirits up and help those in their care adapt as much as possible by providing support and assistance in virtual meetings with their families, and in planning and carrying out special activities.

Doctors, nurses, and

other healthcare providers, along EMT, Police, and Firefighters have also proven themselves praiseworthy, by continuing to provide face-to-face service throughout the pandemic, providing care and assistance when needed, while keeping themselves as safe as possible.

In the early days of the pandemic, we remembered often to thank our

front line workers, with impromptu drive-by parades, and other gestures of thanks.

As the pandemic wore on, it wore many people down, as the struggle to follow restrictions weighed down on everyone’s physical and mental wellbeing.

We weren’t saying it as often, but we still appreciate all that they were doing.

As restrictions continued month after month, sometimes health care workers unfairly bore the brunt of frustrations from the ongoing protocols that they had little to

do with setting, but everything to do with following and enforcing.

This week we want them to know how much we are grateful to them for going above and beyond over the past few years.

We are grateful for their commitment to caring for our community.

We are very lucky to have you all in our Flagstaff County community, and we know it; today, we want you to know how much we value you and the work you’ve done.

High winds atop of four to six inches of fresh snow from the weekend turned highways into cow trails on Monday, March 7, throughout the Flagstaff Region. With winds in to 50 km/hr range gusting to 80 km/hr, blowing snow accumulated on the roadways, then was polished to pure ice. Highways surrounding the region were marked ʻtravel not recommendedʼ by 511 Alberta, and local drivers reported numerous cars in the ditch.

The roads were so icy that gusts of winds were enough to push vehicles into a slide in some places, and side roads were nearly impossible to navigate.

OBITUARIES Leslie (Les) Logan Smith Kathleen Ann Prehn (Muyres)

It is with great sadness the family of Leslie (Les) Logan Smith, of Alliance, Alberta announces his passing February 25, 2022, at the age of 87.

Les was born on November 1, 1934, to Lena and Charlie Smith in Lake Isle, Alberta.

Les was predeceased by

his wife Beth, his sisters Doreen Thomeus, Wilma Robbins, and his brother Floyd Smith.

He is survived by his children Connie (Greg), Denise, Sherrie (Jerry), Floyd (Teressa) and their mother Bernice, along with his stepchildren Caroline (Cathy), Jeffrey, and his beloved dog Farley; his sisters Jean Gylander, Verna Lewis, Leona Heinricks; grandchildren, David, Ashley, Tracy, Bill, Chris, Andrea, Shelby, Jake, Hannah and Julian, great grandchildren; Cohen, Linnaea, Rachel, Liam, Melissa, Kayleigh, Oaklynn, Halen.

Les earned his living building pipelines,

forestry, and trucking. On his retirement he was rarely idle keeping busy woodworking, doing yardwork, helping with the harvest, and feeding/watching birds.

He was always in the company of one or more of his beloved dogs.

Services will be held at a later date.

(March 4, 1942 March 4, 2022) Lilian Jeanne Matthiessen of Camrose, Alberta, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2022, at the age of 80 years.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband Leo Matthiessen; children Richard (Brenda) Matthiessen of Radway, Robb (Carey) Matthiessen of Camrose, and Leah (Byron) Johnson of Smoky Lake; seven grandchildren; and siblings Marilyn Yanik of Fort Smith, NWT, Bunny (Jaak) Koosel of Nanaimo, BC, and Lorn Yanik of Kelowna, BC. Faith: Fighting a rollercoaster of emotions As I watch the news, scroll through Facebook, check out other social media and sources for current events, I am slammed with a wide variety of information and input and points of view. Which one is correct? Which one is accurate? Can these voices be trusted? Could these things actually be happening? How could people actually treat each other like this? There are so many questions that bombard our minds today! These questions are then followed by a roller coaster of emotions and questions of what could I possibly do to change the situation? Or is there any way out?

The sad part is that often these questions are followed by a sense of hopelessness and defeat.

I feel like we are living

in Charles Dickens Tale Of Two Cities: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

In God’s letter to us called the Bible in the book of Ecclesiastes 3:1 it says: “There is a time for everything, and a season for everything under the heavens.” It then goes into a list of examples (which I encourage you to have a look at for yourself).

There are times and seasons for everything as Charles Dickens and the writer of Ecclesiastes explains, but as Albert Ein-

stein once said “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.

The issues and problems that have been created by man, needs someone bigger, stronger, wiser, mightier to solve it. That’s where I have some very good news: because of God’s letter and His promises.

In Romans 8:31 it says: If God is for us, who can be against us, and then in Jeremiah 9:23 – 24 It’s not by might, nor by power but by my Spirit says the Lord.

Then lastly Luke 1:37 For nothing is impossible with God! Peace in our lives comes through a living relationship with the one who loved us and gave His life for us. Jesus Christ.

Kathleen Ann Muyres was born to parents Michael and Rosa Muyres on March 23, 1931, the sixth child of twelve children.

Kathleen married Alfred Prehn on October 24, 1949.

They resided on the farm they built together until they semi-retired to Forestburg in 1981.

They bought a motorhome and took many trips to the US and fishing.

Kathleen loved cooking, sewing, quilting, crocheting, playing cards and colouring and spending time with family and friends.

Sedgewick Bowling Results: Verna Erickson on a roll this week In Sedgewick Ladies afternoon bowling, the Pin Pals and Bowling Bags are battling it out with 83 points each.

Karen Keogh had an outstanding week, bowling the high single, 291, and high triple, 625, rolling three strikes in a row, too.

The Bowling Bags rolled team high single, 80, and team high triple, 148.

Verna Erickson hung on to ladies high average, at 181.

Donna Dolaney is this week’s Bowler of the Week with 25.

In Mixed action, Bowling Thunder leads the league with

88 points.

Verna Erickson rolled ladies high single, 212, ladies high triple, 591, and holds ladies high average of 185.

Kevin Sakaluk is on a roll, with men’s high single, 276 and mens high triple, at 687, while Garry Klein retains his hold on mens high average with 219.

The Bowling Stones rolled tram high single, 125, and team high triple this week, at 118.

Mandy Lewis was the ladies Bowlers of the Week, with a 56, and Blake Johnson is the mens Bowler of the Week with a 85.

Five bowlers rolled three strikes in a row: Ron Whitehead, Karen Keogh, Blake Johnson, Jason Backen, and Ken Robertson, while Richard Erickson rolled a TV shot.

In Seniors bowling this week, Verna Erickson also rolled ladies high single there, with a 245, while Sheila Tanton rolled ladies high triple with 607. Erickson also retained her ladies high average seat, with 179, earning Bowler of the Week with a 67. Erickson rolled three strikes in a row, and a whopping six spares in a row.

Bruce Eagleson was mens Bowler of the Week with a 20.

John Tiffinger rolled the TV Shot of the week.

For the men, Richard Erickson took mens high single, with a 218, while Daren Lien rolled mens high triple at 578. Garry Klein holds mens high average.

The Erickson team had a great session, winning team high single, +188, team high triple, 385, and sitting at the top of the heap with 85 points.

In Youth bowling, Caleb Bartusek in Bowlasaurous Boys had a 107 single, a 273 triple, for an

average of 78.

Zackery Erickson in PeeWee boys rolled a high single of 91, a high triple of 266, for an average of 78 as well.

River Odegard continues to hold high average in Bantam girls, with 95.

Greyson Eckstrand had an outstanding week, with a high single of 146, high triple of 325, ending with a 103 average.

In Junior Girls, Willow Odegard rolled high single of 171, high triple of 469, while Maddison Eckstrand retained high average, at 138.

Flagstaff Kids Connection Daycare opens the doors at new location Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Board and staff of the Flagstaff Kids Connection DayCare in Killam realized a long held dream last Tuesday, March 1, when they opened the doors to their new owned location, next door to the Killam Pentecostal Church.

The group purchased the Pentecostal manse, and have been renovating that space since last fall.

With the new premises, the daycare is able to split clients into four different age groupings who each now have their own area, with age and development specific toys and activities just for them. The daycare now has increased its total capacity with the move.

The group now have on-site laundry facilities, a fully functional kitchen, private staff room, new two-toilet bathrooms, an office for the coordinator, and a fully fenced back yard area.

Coordinator Shelby Krakowka says the first day in the new building went very well, as parents adjusted to different entrances for different age groups. “I heard a lot of excitement, and a little confusion.

“The kids were super excited to see their friends, and the new toys and new spaces.”

The group spent the weekend before moving all the old items out of the church basement next door for the final inspection on Monday, Feb. 28, which they passed.

Krakowka says, “Everyone put in a ton of work, but Roger Obrigewich was really instrumental in getting this done.”

The space features new paint, new flooring, new safety features like a fire alarm and fire doors, and has represented a lot of work over the past few months.

As a non-profit society, the daycare raises funds through its operations, fund raisers, and also accepts donations.

Flagstaff Kids Connection Daycare staff were excited about the official opening at the new location on March 1, having spent the weekend preparing the new space. Above, Childcare Educators Chloe Schmutz, Kaylee Schmutz, Daycare Coordinator Shelbee KraKowka, Childcare Educators Emily Fee, and Ryelee Lang.

New lighting and flooring highlight the new spaces for each age group in the house, including this new reading and crafting nook in one of the two downstairs spaces.

The new baby room features plenty of light and exists in its own separate area of the building, including its own bathroom.

The kids were excited to see their friends, and the new toys and new spaces at the new location on Tuesday, March 1.

In The Field: Measuring farm financial health Farming is big business!

Just look at the cost of land, machinery, inputs!

Everything involved in making a living farming is expensive and getting more so. Agriculture has benefited from a long period of farmland appreciation which can mask some underlying weakness in an operation. Let’s look at measurement of financial health.

It always comes down to finance and numbers. One of the most immediate measures in finance health is the current ratio. Put simply, it is your current assets (crop, livestock and input inventories, cash) compared to your current liabilities (loan payments, taxes, input costs, due this year). You may have lots of land but, if you don’t have money to pay today’s bills, you are in trouble. Ideally, you’d like to have a current ratio of 1.5 or better.

There is still living expenses you need for the next year too. The current ratio is also known as liquidity.

Solvency is another measure of financial success. It looks at all debts and liabilities compared to all assets, land, machinery, etc. This is where farmers have benefited over the

last 40 years. With land prices on a steady value increase since the early 1980s, land assets continue to appreciate, adding value to your assets. Anyone who has been farming any length of time would see the value of their land assets increasing and improving your solvency.

Today’s high land price is tomorrow’s starting price.

Increases in solvency allow you the flexibility to leverage the land you have, to expand and deal with the uncertainties of farming. It gives you a cushion for the difficult times as well as the ability to take advantage of opportunities. This has also resulted in those that have more land being able to buy more land easier than the small farmers. The big get bigger. They have what is called, the economy of scale.

This is when production gains efficiencies on a cost of production per unit through size. They maximize the efficiency of their inputs and machinery.

Also, being larger and spread over a greater area, they are somewhat protected from weather risk, at least in terms of some catastrophic weather events.

The third measurement of financial success is profitability. This is the measurement of percent return on investment.

For much of the last 50 years, farming has not been all that profitable.

The gains in the industry have come in terms of land value. As the old saying goes, “They’re not making any more land.”

Profitability is the net income divided by the total assets value. In agriculture that is usually in the single digits. It also differs depending on the agricultural enterprises you have.

Livestock tend to be fairly low on profitability compared to annual cropping.

However, not all land is suitable for growing annual crops.

There are other ways to analyze a farm operation.

If you have a mixed farm, you can analyze each individual operation to see where you are making money or losing it. However, that can change annually, depending on commodity prices.

Take, for example, a cow-calf operation. This year, with very high feed costs, the hay operation may make money but feeding it to the cows is at a loss. This shouldn’t mean you get rid of the cows and sell the hay. Next year, the numbers will be different.

However, you can look for changes to make the individual operations more efficient or effective.

Financial indicators are useful tools to determine if your farm operation is providing you with a living and acts as a good investment. Look at long term

trends, not just one year, to determine the health of your operation and the direction it is heading.

These are the same tools your banker uses when ap-

proving operating and land/machinery loans so you should use them too.

Achieve your long-term goals one step at a time, profitably.

Irma and Sedgewick tied at one game apiece in semi-final playoffs Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The start of the East Central Men’s Senior Hockey League semi finals between the Irma Aces and Sedgewick Sabres has so far debunked the theory of ‘home-town advantage.’

While both teams enjoyed record crowds, thanks to removed restrictions, neither was able to pull out a win at home in the first two games.

The two teams started the best-offive series in Irma on Saturday, March 5, with Sedgewick pulling out a 3-2 win to take an early series lead.

The Aces pulled ahead Saturday, with the first two goals, until Evan Armstrong popped one in midway through the second period, from Kurtis Clarkson and Spencer McClements to come within one. Kyle Sanders scored a power play goal with under a minute left in the period, from Clay Lang and Cole Borth, to tie the game going into the final period.

Dalton Zemanek scored the game winning goal early in the third, from Lang and Clarkson, for a 3-1 final and a one game lead in the series.

Brendan Davis got the win in goal for the Sabres.

This action-packed series continued the next day in Sedgewick in a packed arena, this time with the Aces pulling out a 5-2 win to tie the series.

Irma took the lead early on Sunday, with a goal midway through the first period.

The Aces went ahead by two with a goal in the second period.

Sedgewick scored their first goal with a shot by Evan Armstrong, assisted by assisted by Clarkson and Kyle Sanders, late in the second to come within one but a late-period goal from Irma put the Aces ahead 31 heading into the final period.

Irma pulled ahead 4-1 early in the first with another goal then scored a mid-period goal to make it 5-1.

Sedgewick’s Curtis McKinlay scored late in the period, from Zemanek and Lang, to bring the final to 5-2, and the series to a 1-1 tie.

The series will return to Irma for the third game, to be played tonight, Wednesday, March 9, then will return to Sedgewick this coming Friday, with a fifth game, if necessary, scheduled to be played back in Irma on Saturday night.

In the other semi-final faceoff, between the Provost Combines and Stettler Imperials, Provost took the first game, at home, with a 7-4 win, then Stettler came away with a 7-3 win the next night, tying that series 1-1 as well. That series will continue on Friday, March 11 in Provost.

Make sure to head to Sedgewick this Friday to cheer on the Sabres!
