On Feb. 20 the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) released its decision on the PCA Canada Development of Killam (Old Bear) Solar Farm.

“After consideration of the record of the proceeding, and for the reasons outlined in this decision, the Commission finds that approval of the project isin the public interest having regard to the social, economic, environmental, and other effects of the project.”

The project is to be located on the north half of Section 17, Township 44, Range 13, West of the fourth meridian. It will consist of 42,024 bi-facial photovoltaic solar panels, inverters, and an aboveground electrical collector system.

Sedgewick Sabres heading to ECSHL finals to defend title Leslie Cholowsky Editor The Sedgewick Sabres await the winners of the Provost/Oyen semi-finals after defeating the Stettler Imperials on Saturday, March 8 to take that series.

The series was tied at one game each when the Imperials laced up Friday in Sedgewick.

There, Clay Lang scored first for the Sabres, from Keton Holinaty, then Carter Ortman put Sedgewick up by 2 from Curtis McKinlay and Holinaty on a power play.

Stettler put the score at 2-1 heading into period two.

Ortman scored his second of the night from Dean Brodie to make it 3-1.

Lang then scored his second of the night on a power play, from Holinaty, to make it 4-1.

In the final period, Stettler scored one to make it 4-2, then Jordan Gagnon scored from Dalton Zemanek and Jesse Reeds to make it a 5-2 final.

Travis Child got the win in goal; shots were 34-27 Stettler.

Ahead by one, the Sabres travelled to Stettler the next night hoping to sew up the win.

Ortman scored the only goal in the first period, from Kyle Sanders and Dean Brodie, then Brodie scored early in the second period, from Ryan Guhle and Sanders to make it 2-1.

Stettler scored a powerplay goal in the second period to make it 2-1 heading into the final period of play.

Travor Bromby opened the scoring with an unassisted goal to make it 3-1, then Sanders scored another unassisted goal to make it 4-1.

A last-seconds goal from Stettler was too little, too late with a 4-2 final, and series win for the Sabres.

The Provost-Oyen series is all over the place. In the first game, they played to an overtime 6-5 win for Oyen. Then last Sunday, Provost beat Oyen 8-0, then on Friday the Combines won a close 5-4 game.

On Saturday, Oyen beat the Combines 72, forcing a game for Tuesday, March 11 to determine a winner. The game will be played back in Provost, and should be a real nail-biter.

Watch the Sabres social media or the ECSHL site to find out when the final series will start; it should be this weekend.

McLennan says that former FFCS Director Lynne Jenkinson and Joanne Stewart of AHS participated in a similar simulation, and raved about the experience.

“Especially as a service provider,” McLennan says.

Essentially the simulation gives participants an in-depth look at spending a month living in the shoes of a family experiencing socio-economic difficulties.

United Way says the simulation mirrors a month in the life of a family living in poverty.

“Participants must make difficult decisions in real-time, facing the consequences as they work to provide food, shelter, and other basic necessities on a limited income.”

It’s hands-on experience; a rare opportunity to step into someone else’s shoes.

McLennan says it’s not just for those who work as service providers, but that this course is for anyone.

While participants will experience a full range of encounters, obstacles, and challenges, trained volunteers will play the roles of business owners, teachers, police officers, agency workers, service providers, and government employees.

McLennan says it’s like a table-top exercises where each participant has to navigate through different challenges, finding out where help is available.

“The goal of the exercise is not only to spread empathy and awareness of what services are available in our region, but it’s also to identify any gaps in services we might have.”

She adds, “In a rural area, community

is largely based on a trusting relationship.

But we aren’t connecting with people the way we used to.

“Hopefully this exercise will help us highlight gaps - give us the opportunity to find out and address gaps.”

McLennan says there are a maximum of 88 seats available, and just over a quarter of those are already spoken for.

“We have schools coming; we’re hoping to see municipal leaders, sports organizers, churches, community boards, and business owners.”

Participants must pre-register with FFCS by Tuesday, March 25.

Poverty Simulation exercise coming to Flagstaff County in April Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Until you are forced to make a decision between paying a utility bill and feeding your family, there’s no way to comprehend the stress and anxiety that comes with living in poverty.

The United Way has created a Poverty Simulation; it’s a unique in-person experience designed to “challenge perceptions, shift perspectives, and deepen empathy.”

FFCS/FIRST have partnered with the United Way, FCAL, and Alberta Health Services to bring the Poverty Simulation to Hardisty on Friday, April 4.

The United Way says that 11 per cent of urban and rural Albertans experience poverty.

FFCS Executive Director Stacey McLennan says she’s not sure if the 11 per cent is the actual number here in Flagstaff County, but says, “I can attest to the number of clients using the food bank, and that’s definitely increased over last year.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Reader: Trump tariffs our own fault To the Editor; Your March 5th story on the responses of our resigned Prime Minister, our current Premier and our potentially next Prime Minister show how ill-informed or purposely misleading their statements on this issue of imposed tariffs from the United States Executive office has become.

When you quoted Justin Trudeau saying “Donald… even though you’re a very smart guy, this is very dumb” he exposed his total mis-reading of the intent of the tariffs towards Canada as well as Mexico.

Donald Trump has more facts available to him than any other person in this whole world due to the largest intelligence services that the United States currently provides its leaders. It most assuredly a “fact” that he and his executive leaders know exactly what is transpiring inside Canada currently and prior to his threats of tariffs towards Canada.

“Dumb" really doesn’t exist in the Oval Office, only people with an agenda reside there. "Oh, so you say what agenda?” This is where you have to take your "understanding of what you see” hat off and put on your “critical thinking” hat on!

Donald Trump is a business man, although a controversial one at that but still that is his heart core. Why would you think that anyone would use economic threats which would go against the biggest agreement (USMCA) that he helped develop in his first term and which would cause problems even within his own country? All you have to do is look at his campaigning speeches leading up to his election. No. 1, bring back

manufacturing (therein jobs) back to the US; No. 2 close all the borders to illegal drugs and immigration.

Point number 2 is the reason Canada and Mexico are feeling the threats of tariffs. Trump knows he cannot tell directly another country what to do within its borders and no country would ever allow that to happen without looking weak. So just like a behavioural expert, he will have you change your behaviour through other means (i.e. tariff threats). So far as a country, we have not even come close to taking down the illicit drug manufacturing that is currently going on within our borders.

Oh sure, we are upping the ante at our border for what is coming into the country, but nothing for what is going out of our borders. Think about it, borders are where you stop things from coming in, not going out!

Our leaders say less than 1 per cent of Fentanyl is entering the U.S. through the northern border and thus dismiss that Canada is not the problem. Trump’s intelligence as well as Canadian intelligence and Police services have stated that the largest Fentanyl labs are being created inside Canadian borders and these drugs are being shipped out “world wide.”

But, what is not being stated by anyone in Canada is that the majority of these drugs are eventually returning into the United States through every conceivable means possible. So it is within our country that this production is suppling the world market and thus the majority of the U.S. market.

Ever since Sam Cooper exposed the money laundering corruption networks in BC years ago, no Canadian governments anywhere have taken any solid actions to

close those loopholes which has exploded into the Hong Kong Triads (with Chinese government backing) partnering with the Mexican Cartels in setting up large scale drug labs in Canada due to that lack of action. All the main elements to make these drugs come from China, why else would that country be so interested in maintaining a foreign interference group (i.e. Chinese Police stations, etc.) within Canada at all levels of governments? Trump can control that within his border, but not within our borders unless we are forced to do it, or through human decency should have taken the initiative ourselves along time ago.

This is on us! Our own fault for not correcting the loopholes where foreign countries can come and corrupt our systems for their illegal gains all the while putting Canadians and Americans at high risk. This was never about economic issues between Canada and the United States. It has everything to do about not be proper human beings to ourselves and our neighbours.

Trump is giving us a chance to do that, if we can see what is really happening! I fear that Canadians don’t feel it's worth their time to pay attention to what is happening and look to either incompetent or ignorant governments to sort this out for them. We know what Liberal Government would do! Good luck with that!

And be prepared to suffer until we strengthen our corruption laws at all levels.

Reader responds to Kurek To the Editor; The letter from Member of Parliament, Damien Kurek, as contained in the March 5 Opinion page of The Community Press, painted a rather colourful and ambitious picture of his Party's plans for the defence of Canada's borders - particularly the Northern border. Unfortunately, his imaginings fall far short of reality.

His proposed increase in Canadian Ranger numbers shows clearly a lack of understanding in the function of that organization. In reality, that widely dispersed group, at best, operates more at a guerrilla, or recce level than an organized, effective fighting force, and serves little more than northern flag-waving. They are equipped only with a C19, single shot, bolt-action rifle. More a selfdefence or hunting weapon than for current military requirements.

And creation of an Arctic Base within two years? In today's world that time frame might, just might, see the first phase of an environmental study nearing comple-

tion.

As to the recently announced 'Hub' redoubts, they reflect more a civil servant/political grift reaction than genuine military readiness. Is there anybody in Ottawa seriously studying the current Russia/Ukraine conflict?

The described ice breakers raise questions as well.

Would they be of the quality of the Navy's new Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships? Six vessels costing some $6 Billion and which arrived with anchors that wouldn't, inoperable fuel systems, and hull leaks which continue to this day. As to submarines and CF-35s.... well, 'nough said.

Equipment aside for the moment, the state of personnel to fill the envisioned surge in military readiness remains abysmal. Leadership in the military is woefully inadequate with mannequin hires appointed for having 'ducks in a row' rather than real time experience outside of desk and air conditioned office. The phrase: "It is difficult to soar with eagles when led by turkeys," is never

Mr. Kurek might want to ask the troops in Latvia their view on their leaders in Ottawa. From reports filtering out from that theatre, begging bowls have replaced soldier's mess tins, Amazon, and E-bay the Quartermaster Stores, Visa the Paymaster.

Canada's Armed Forces are no longer an effective fighting force. All the mewlings, promises, and faux posturing will not fix this situation. But should someone begin to understand the real purpose of a military force (and no, it's not about employment, filling 'quotas', or playing dress-up) then, and only then, will the Canadian Ship of State show ready gunports.

News publishers call on Canada Post CEO to start treating community newspapers as biggest customer, not biggest rival For many Canadian community news publishers, Canada Post is really the only game in town when it comes to distributing their newspapers to readers. This is especially true in more rural and remote communities. A year ago, Canada Post decided that community newspapers with commercial inserts – like Canadian Tire or grocery store flyers – were no longer exempt from Canada Post’s Consumers’ Choice program, which allows Canadians to opt out of receiving ‘junk mail’.

Like advertisements on the pages of a newspaper, commercial inserts pay for the news content our journalists produce. This abrupt U-turn from Canada Post’s long-standing policy was made without proper stakeholder consultation or economic/social impact analysis.

Clearly, community newspapers

with commercial inserts are not ‘junk mail’. The decision is having a demonstrable and devastating impact on community newspaper revenue.

By way of example, recently, the East Central Alberta Review announced that it was shuttering after faithfully serving the community for 114 years.

Joyce Webster, who started off as a receptionist and typesetter and eventually became the publisher and owner, devoted 44 years of her life to the paper. In a recent column, she cited Canada Post as one of the contributing factors. She wrote, “I could write a book on how Canada Post (who we depend on to deliver our time-sensitive product) treats their newspaper customers since they became our “competitor”! Newspapers are all about bringing market information to the public and yet their policy of not permitting “advertising”

(our bread and butter) flyers into our total market coverage newspapers effectively removed $24,000 annual revenue from the Review bottom line when they changed their policy in 2024. That’s just one of many policies.

Add poor delivery policy, newspaper bundles ending up in post office recycling bins, even in garbage dumpsters, and postal strikes.”

With the price of many goods, especially food, remaining elevated – coupled with the Trump tariff threats –Canadians are very conscious about both price and country of origin these days.

It really feels like it's here with the longer days filled with sunlight and warmer temperatures. With spring comes wildfire season. Wildfire season officially began on March 1, and United Conservatives are taking a proactive, three-pronged approach to wildfire preparedness: prevention, mitigation, and readiness.

Albertans take pride in our province’s stunning wildlands and recognize we all have a role to play in protecting them. Safeguarding our natural spaces also means protecting communities from the devastating effects of wildfires.

By focusing on prevention, mitigation, and readiness, United Conservatives are ensuring Alberta is prepared for the 2025 wildfire season.

The best firefighting tactic always involves preventing fires from starting in the first place. Every Albertan must understand their role in wildfire prevention—every small effort counts when it comes to protecting our communities, wildlands, and natural resources.

United Conservatives encourage Albertans to take the time to enjoy the province’s incredible outdoor opportunities, however, we all must remember that we have a shared responsibility in preventing wildfires.

When prevention is not enough, Alberta’s government is strengthening wildfire mitigation efforts. This in-

cludes controlled burns, constructing firebreaks, and managing forest vegetation to minimize the available fuel for fires. Many of the most destructive wildfires are fueled by dry, dead plant material that has been left unmanaged.

Alberta is taking decisive action to reduce these risks and keep our forests safer.

Even with strong prevention and mitigation measures, some wildfires are inevitable. When they do occur, Alberta is prepared to respond with some of the best-trained, best-equipped firefighting personnel in the world. These dedicated professionals are always ready to respond, using state-of-the-art tools and technology to combat wildfires and protect our communities.

With the arrival of the 2025 wildfire season, the province has eight active fires—less than the 60 we saw at this time last year. Through Budget 2025, United Conservatives are investing $160 million in base funding for wildfire personnel, equipment, training, contracts for aircraft, bulldozers, and nightvision-equipped helicopters. We are committed to ensuring our firefighting forces have the right tools to do their job and are nothing short of state-of-theart.

Fireguard projects are already underway in key areas, including the Bow Valley near Canmore, Cypress Hills Provincial Park, Hinton, Whitecourt, and Slave Lake. These projects create strategic barriers that help slow the

spread of wildfires and protect communities. Additionally, through the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta, United Conservatives are supporting 38 FireSmart projects worth more than $3.4 million. These initiatives focus on fire prevention, community education, and enhancing local emergency response plans.

Hughenden U11 Female Jets won two and lost two playoff games over the weekend. On Friday and Saturday, Jets lost to Wainwright 3-1 at Killam, and then beat them 4-2. On Saturday Jets also beat Irma 4-3 at Killam. Then on Sunday they dropped a 6-3 game at Killam against Fort McMurray. Scoring for Jets were; Julianne Leskow (3g), Gracie Prokopetz (5g 2a), Blakely Amundson (1g 1a), Isla Waddell (3g 1a), Ellin Oh (1a), Annika White (1a), and Paicee Jones (1a).

Rhett Jones got both of the wins in goal on Saturday.

Battle River U11 Female Knights dropped two close playoff games over the weekend at Sedgewick Wild Rose Co-op Recreation Centre. On Friday, BR had a 43 lead midway through the third period but relinquished the lead against Mallaig.

On Saturday, Lac La Biche took a 4-1 first period

lead but BR came from behind to tie the game when Brielle Leslie scored two late goals to tie the game at 6-6. (Brielle scored all 11 goals for Battle River in the two games). Lac La Biche connected in OT for the win.

Scoring over the weekend for BR were; Brielle Leslie (11g), Quinn Devey (1a), Harper Rose (1a), and Blakley Hardon (1a).

Battle River U15 Female Knights dropped a 5-1 game against Irma on Friday with Alivia Motley scoring the lone goal. Knights were scheduled to play Irma in game two on Monday night at Sedgewick after press time. Game three if necessary will be played on Saturday, March 15.

Battle River U18 Female Knights played game three against St. Paul on Saturday, with the playoff series tied 1-1, and BR skated to a 6-1 win. Surai Thomson scored four goals in a 5-point game, while Emma Galletly scored a goal in a 4-point game. Other scorers were; Mercedeze Wildeman (2a), Paige Zimmer (1g), Emma Tuftin (1a), and Keeley Sorken (1a). Maddison Eckstrand got the win in goal.

Well hello folks. I hope you have been enjoying the last few days of above zero temperatures. It is rather exciting that Spring is just around the corner. The local stores all have their Easter eggs and chocolates all on display for you to buy.

Jeepers, Easter is about five-and-a-half weeks away. First we have St. Patricks Day on Monday, the 17th of March. Do you all celebrate with

Fay Bronson of Hardisty donated three novels written by her good friend, Mary Burpee (nee Kennedy) to the Hardisty Library.

Mary was born on an Alberta homestead and was fascinated by the stories her father told her, about her Irish roots plus the interesting information she gleaned from genealogical research.

Mary had a busy life as a farm wife, mother, help-

mate and writer. Her life was never dull but very challenging, sometimes exhilarating. She also raised Arabian horses and rode on many occasions.

We are so pleased to be able to add these wonderful books to our library shelves. Thank you to Mary Burpee and her talents and to Fay Bronson for the donation.

Thunderstars U11 team ends season on a high note The Thunderstar U11’s are Tier Champions! After 16 regular season games, the team finished the regular season tied in first place with Maskwacis out of eight teams.

During the first round of play offs they had a bye weekend, so kept their legs warm by playing and winning an exhibition game against Camrose.

The second round of playoffs took the team to Stettler for game one where they lost by two goals to a 7-5 final with both goalies in net. Landon Miller had a hat trick, Wells Weiss had two goals and one assist, and Scottie Terway, Nelson Bendfeld, and River Boudreau each had one assist.

The next day they came back home to Forestburg and won by three goals with a 8-5 final with Ava Mairena in net. Clyde

Cassidy and Landon Miller each had a hat trick and one assist. Sam Manning had one goal and two assists, Nelson Bendfeld had one goal and one assist, and Eva Shepherd, Ryatt McCarroll, Wells Weiss, and Bentley Booy had one assist each.

With a one-goal lead overall they moved on to the third round.

The first game took them to Wetaskiwin where they won 9-6 with Cohen McKay in net. Goal scorers were Landon Miller with a hat trick and two assists, Callen Thomas with a hat trick and one assist, Wells Weiss with two goals and three assists, Clyde Cassidy with one goal and three assists, Bennett Johnstone with two assists, and Nelson Bendfeld, Ryatt McCarrol1, and Everett one assist each.

Game two brought them home to Daysland with a three-goal lead into the final game. The Thunderstars won the Championship game 5-1 with Cohen McKay in net once again.

Wells Weiss had two goals and one assist, Sam Manning had one goal, Landon Miller had one goal and one assist, Callen Thomas had one goal, River Boudreau had three assists, and Clyde Cassidy had one assist.

The Daysland Alliance Church’s annual Wild Game Dinner is set to take place later this month, with guest speaker Rod Sawatzky who is also the chaplain for the Calgary Flames and Calgary Stampeders!

Last year they had an attendee fill us in on all the details of the amazing dishes and entertainment. I'm sure this year will not disappoint!

Jackie Lovely attended our Daysland School last week, being a guest speaker for the Grade 6 class where she answered plenty of eager young mind’s questions and enjoyed some cake to sweeten the deal.

Daysland AG Foods every year holds their contest for the 60 second shopping spree, in which one lucky customer gets to run through the store and load their cart up,

with only 60 seconds to do so. I’m not gonna lie this sounds like the coolest win and I am hopeful every year I might be the winner.

However, yet again, I am not the winner… but I really enjoy watching the videos of the winners and am so happy and ex-

cited for them when I see their big win! This year Janet Heilman won the shopping spree here in Daysland!

First off, a little but important correction to last week's edition. Isn't it interesting how one additional word can make all the difference?

I wrote: “So for example the costs for all school field trips, ski trips, and so on are covered by the parent association.” Well, that isn't correct. School council pays for all the bussing for the field trips, ski trips to Alliance, and so on.

There's still a fee for parents to cover for their children to attend the field trip but in order to keep it affordable, bussing gets covered by council. So, if you can help support the upcoming online auction, it will

be appreciated as they are looking to replace the school's entire collection of Chrome Books this year. A huge expense on top of the regular expenses the school council funds.

It's been a busy weekend hosting hockey in Sedgewick and Killam. I hope you had a chance to take in a game or two cheering for your favourite team or athletes. Read more elsewhere in this paper.

Flagstaff County supporting local groups with tourism grants and a new recreation grant Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff County voted to fund two local non-profit organizations in February who both draw in visitors from in and outside of the region in the form of tourism.

The Iron Creek Flying Club has hosted Discovery Aviation (formerly COPA for Kids) events for many years.

During the event local pilots donate their time and expertise, the use of their airplanes, and the club donates fuel and lunch, to children ages eight through 17 to experience a flight.

Last year’s event draw 160 participants not just from Flagstaff County but from areas throughout the province.

Flagstaff County granted the Flying Club $3,000 from its Tourism Assis-

tance Grant program. Funding amounts are based on specific criteria that include items like the estimated number of participants, where those participants are from, and the duration of the event.

Another local group, Area 53 Raceway in Forestburg, also applied for grant funding under the Tourism Assistance Grant, in the amount of $9,626.30.

This application was put in to cover the one-time expense of finishing the racing return lane.

The club advised that it has completed 80 per cent of the preparation work, and obtained a quote from Flagstaff County for recycled oil and application for that same amount, to finish the lane for the 2025 season.

Area 53 holds multiple races each season, with nine events on the 2025 racing schedule, starting in May and

ending in October.

Area 53 events bring racers, their crews, families, and friends, along with other spectators, from around the province.

Council approved a one-time grant of $9,626.30 for this project. The club hopes to have the job completed at the beginning of June, just after the start of the 2025 racing season.

In 2025, Flagstaff County’s business plan included an additional $100,000 in funding for recreation facilities, and in February, Council decided on how these funds would be allocated.

Council voted to allocate the additional $100,000 through a new Recreation Facility Operation Expenses Grant program to “provide further funding to regional recreational facilities that have experience significant increases in operational costs over the

past three years.

“Recreation facilities may have experienced rate increases in utilities and insurance expenses or unforeseen repair and maintenances costs.

“The intention of this grant is to provide financial assistance to facilities that can demonstrate a financial need.”

This will be a one-time grant, intended to address past expenditures.

The total amount of funding allocated to the grant is $100,000. Applications will be accepted up to May 31, and will be considered by Council for a final decision. The specific grant amount awarded will be determined after reviewing the applications.

In addition, Flagstaff County also gives $641,268 annual in recreation grant funding to Ag Societies throughout the region, based on population.

Forestburg Council reviews 2025 Capital Plan Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Village of Forestburg Council reviewed its 2025 Capital Plan during the regular council meeting of March 6.

Part of the plan includes finishing a few hundred feet of road construction on 40th Avenue, started last year, and completion of work on 47th Street south to meet up with 40 Ave heading

east.

In 2024 the village purchased some land that is located within Flagstaff County to extend 40th avenue further east.

Forestburg CAO Dwight Dibben says, “Our Intermunicipal Development Plan with Flagstaff County identifies that land as potential expansion by the village.”

has indicated a willingness to play a role in development of the industrial park being built south of the village on jointly owned village and county land, “but we have not ascertained what that role will be.”

The village has successfully received grant funding to extend these services and roadways into the new industrial development area. Dibben says, “Multi-jurisdictional projects score higher in grant applications.”

“We have to be ready for development when it comes to us. That means having the right utilities available, available spaces, and access to high speed utilities.”

Dibben says one of the main things he’s proud of is that the village has been able to do the work on the new park without raising taxes in any way.

“The lion’s share of investment is not being borne by local stakeholders.

Dibben says long before he came to the village as CAO, Forestburg Councils were putting funds into reserves for long-term planning.

“That sends a great message to our residents. We aren’t raising their tax rates. Their taxes may be increasing, but that’s because property values are increasing, and that puts everyone in a good position.”

Forestburg has also worked with Battle River Railway (BRR) for the potential of having rail access in the industrial park. “Rail access is increasingly what we’re seeing as a critical attraction tool.”

Dibben says now the challenge will be marketing the space, but he feels there should be a lot of interest.

“We are ready if an interested party should contact us.”

He says the village has a number of

marketing opportunities, through BRAED, BREOC, Invest Alberta, and even tourism venues like Go East of Edmonton. “That’s why the Jeanne Lougheed Historic Park development is also integral to our overall development.”

Dibben will also be addressing the Economic Developers Alberta during their spring conference this April.

He says that the village is, in comparison to other municipalities of the same size, “punching outside its weight class.”

“We’ve been blessed with a lot of things. We’re located at the junction of two highways, we have an extremely entrepreneurial population, and we have an independent rail line willing to work with us, to name a few.

“It’s due to an audaciousness of our past and present councils that we are in this great position.”

The village has also planned for upgrades at the sanitary sub-lift station, replacement of the Farvolden building main entrance, pool filters, new lagoon pump and valve release as part of its capital budget.

One exiting new expenditure being contemplated is the purchase and installation of a concrete pad and outside sports courts and nets, financed through reserves.

The proposed pad would be located on the western side of town, near 56th Street, and would have lines that would accommodate a number of outdoor games, including basketball, which is presently very popular in the village, especially with the school teams having such a great year, Dibben says. The court could also accomodate pickleball, soccer, tennis, and even volleyball.

A Place to Learn, Connect, and Belong “I think what we do here is build a stronger community,” says Lois Polege, FCAL’s Executive Director. “We provide opportunities for people to learn, connect with local resources, and feel a sense of belonging.

“Whether it’s a Building Blocks class, computer literacy, English as a Second Language, or resume coaching, we want our doors to be open to everyone.”

Polege’s passion for adaptability and personalized support has helped make FCAL a vital hub for adult learners.

The organization offers foundational courses like English language tutoring, learner’s licence preparation, and career advancement support through resume building and job search assistance. The key, according to Lois, is relationshipbuilding: “We start with the individual.

Who are you? What do you need? And we look for the supports that will work best for them.”

Connecting Newcomers to Resources and Community For many newcomers to Flagstaff County, navigating a new environment can be daunting. Treena Brooke, FCAL’s Newcomer Connector, ensures that individuals moving into the region have a trusted guide.

“I know how overwhelming it can be when you don’t know where to go for resources,” she says. “That’s why my role is so crucial. You don’t need to have all the answers when you walk in—just your questions. We’ll take it from there.”

Through outreach, welcome bags, and one-on-one support, Treena helps newcomers integrate into the community, whether that means finding a school for their children, understanding rural life, or discovering places of worship.

“We host events like potlucks, wiener roasts, and business events to help people feel like they belong,” Treena adds.

“Newcomers who feel connected are more likely to stay, raise families, and contribute to the local economy.”

Education Beyond the Classroom At FCAL, learning isn’t limited to tra-

ditional education - it’s about community enrichment. Braeden Holmstrom, FCAL’s Program Coordinator, works to organize tutoring programs, recruit volunteers, and create engaging learning opportunities.

“Education isn’t just about transferring information from one head to another,” he says. “It’s about creating a safe space where people feel respected and ready to grow.”

One unique aspect of FCAL is its rural setting, which presents both challenges and advantages.

“We reach out across the county, offering classes in different communities to reduce travel barriers,” Lois explains.

“We rely on partnerships and volunteers to accomplish more, and we’re proud to have the flexibility to adapt to changing needs.”

Marianne Mabras, a newcomer and new mother, found a lifeline in FCAL’s programs: “Moving to Flagstaff County was overwhelming, but Treena and the team at FCAL made me feel welcome.

They helped me through my pregnancy, guided me in finding resources, and always provided support when I needed it.

“Now, I feel like I truly belong here, thanks to the relationships I’ve built through their programs.”

A Call to Action: Get Involved FCAL’s success depends on community support.

“We’re always looking for volunteers,” Braeden emphasizes. “Whether it’s tutoring English, joining our board, or helping with programs, there’s a role for everyone. And we provide training, so no one is sent out without support.”

Lois sums it up best: “If you need help with English, reading, writing, computers, or job searching, or if you’re looking to volunteer, we are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that whether you were born here or arrived last week, you have the resources and connections you need.”

Faith: More ‘But God’ moments They Intended Harm…

BUT GOD! This week I continue with “But God” moments in the Bible. Have you ever had someone intentionally hurt you?

Imagine your brothers selling you to a slave trader. This is the life of Joseph in the Bible (you can read about it in Genesis 37-50).

They were jealous of Joseph and how their father favoured him.

Joseph also had the ability to have prophetic dreams and interpret those dreams. So Joseph finds himself in Egypt as a slave.

Through some ups and

downs, time in prison for false accusations, he found himself interpreting the dream for the Pharoah (king of Egypt).

The dream predicted a famine that would come to the entire area.

Joseph gave some wise council and was appointed second in command in all of Egypt.

One day his brothers find themselves in Egypt during the famine to ask for grain.

They don’t recognize Joseph, and when they realize it was him, they know they should be in big trouble.

Joseph says this, “You intended to harm me, but

God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

(Genesis 50:20 NIV).

People can be awful at times. They may do things that are intended to hurt. Without God this would be horrible. There is an encouraging verse that goes well with this story, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28 NIV). Yesterday my man was checking his pregnant cows and he met our first-born calf. He was already clean and standing up and had his first drink from his Momma. These calves are so darn cute and tough.

Our neighbour actually saw a four-point male elk in her yard the other morning. It was rather early but you rarely see them out and about.

Since my man built a high fence around his silage pit, the elk have not been visiting regularly. There are four or five moose that wander around here, too. Luckily we have not run into

them at night, they are so large. I am told that the Canada geese are back but I have not seen or heard any of them, have you?

I read that Hardisty will be having a market again. Apparently it will be the last Saturday of the month. The first one is March 29. That is so exciting and I can't wait to see what lovely items will be for sale. People will enjoy coming for coffee and

treats and supporting our market again.

Remember that you have to pay your taxes by the end of April.... Joke: "I believe we should all pay our tax with a smile, I tried-but they wanted cash!"

Sedgewick Bowling Results: Lien rolls a whopping six strikes in a row In Ladies afternoon bowling, Verna Erickson continued her streak, earning ladies high single, 210, high tiple with 535, and maintaining the high average of 171. Verna repeated that last week, with scores of 207 and 564, bumping her average to 172.

The Alley Oops rolled tean high single at +153, and team high triple at +228. .

The Rolling Pins poured it on last week, with Team High Single of +62 and Team Bowling Bags rolled high triple of +119, pushing them to the top with 101 points.

Cindy Hogstead earned Bowler of the Week at +8, Jean Frost rolled that honour this week at +57. Kari Sanders earned three spares in a row.

In Mixed Bowling, Sheila Tanton rolled herself to ladies high single at 213, while Christina Kuilboer rolled high triple at 529, then last week Stacey Zaretski rolled at 217 high single, and Verna Erickson rolled at 556 high triple.

Daren Lien rolled the mens high single with a whopping 305, rolling five strikes in a row, and six strikes in a row along the way, while Kevin Sakaluk earned mens high triple of 794, also rolling five strikes in a row. This week Kevin rolled Men’s high single at 303, while Daren

earned high triple at 651.

Team LJ’s earned team high single at +149 and team high triple of +348. This week the Bad Apples rolled team high single at +217, while the Lick-ity Splits rolled team high triple with +253. Team Spare Time remains at the top with 96 points. Verna Erickson maintained ladies high average of 176, and Garry Klein bumped his men’s high average to 205.

Heather Homme earned Bowler of the Week for the ladies, with a +38,. This week that honour went to K T Liebana with a +67. Daren Lien earned men’s Bowler of the Week at +117, and John Adamson got it last week at +98.

Earning three strikes in a row were Danni Frost, Hari Ramanujula, and Garry Klein, earning three spares in row was Daryl Johnson. This week Daryl rolled the three strikes, as well as Jason Backen, Joe Hebert, and Mike Muirhead, with Daren Lien earning three spares in a row with Les Bazuta.

Kevin Sakaluk rolled four strikes in a row, as did John Adamson, while Bill Rose got five spares, and Daren Lien earning six strikes in a row. Brent Snethun rolled a TV shot this week.

In morning Adult Bowling, Mary Lou Rawluk rolled a 196, good enough for ladies high single, while Verna Erickson rolled 532 for ladies high triple, then this week Verna took both titles, with high single of 230 and high triple of 602.

Randy Johnson had a great night, rolling 261 for mens high single and 688 for mens high triple, and this week Daren Lien also rolled 261 for mens high single, and 677 for mens high triple. Team Burden rolled team high single at +152, and team high triple at +312 last week, this week it was Team Erickson at +98 for high single and +269 fr high triple! Team Klein sits atop the standings with 103 points. Verna Erickson maintained her hold on ladies high average of 167, while Garry Klein holds men’s high average of 205.

Sherry Mayne rolled to Bowler of the Week with a +27, with Elaine Debock earning that this week with a +39. Randy Johnson earned men’s Bowler of the Week at +96, then last week Larry Burden got the title at +41..

In Youth Bowling, Emmett Erickson got a high single of 105, high double of 172, and earned high average of 78 in Bowlasaurus Boys. Last week he bumped his high double to 185, and gained a point with a 79 high average.

Neveah King rolled to a single of 111, a double of 206, putting her high average at 76 in Bowlasaurus Girls. King rolled 85 and 165 last week, bumping her average to 77.

Stella Erikssen rolled a single of 120, a triple of 337, and ended with a high average of 99 in Bantam girls, while Damian Sturges rolled a 108, a tiple of 297, and ended with average of 110.

Roscoe Hinkey rolled Junior Boys single of 109, and triple of 317, ending with a 100 high average.

Willow Odegard in Senior Girls rolled a whopping 237 high single, a 513 high triple, and ends with a 152 average, also earning three strikes in a row, and two strikes in a row.

Thomas Bruce rolled a high single of 135, high triple of 368, ending with high average of 128 in Senior Boys this week.

Virtual MD service hits 100,000 calls since 2022

New specialty phone line for new parents of newborns launches in rural Alberta Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Shortly after Primary Care Alberta (PCA) recorded that 100,000 calls to Healthlink 811 had been referred to physicians, either through the phone or a secure Zoom link.

The program was launched in 2022, and is called Virtual MD. Initially introduced to allow callers to Healthlink to be referred by a physician, the service has also reduced potentially unnecessary emergency department visits, too.

PCA says of those first 100,000 calls, about half were able to manage their condition at home with self care.

The service is available seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. and has 90 physicians on rotation.

“The virtual option to meet with patients enables us to connect with pockets of Albertans who may struggle to access these services: those with mobility or transportation issues, individuals in rural areas or those who have limited access to care,” says Dr. Genelle Dingeldein, a Virtual MD physician.

“We can provide immediate advice in real-time and help patients navigate how to self-manage their symptoms or when to seek higher levels of care when appropriate.”

Now a new specialty phone line has been created for North, South, and Central zones for parents of newborns, or new parents in general.

“Parents often have questions related to care for their newborn. The New Parent and Newborn Line provides expert postpartum information free of charge, to all parents in North, South and Central zones who have a baby under two months of age,” says Patricia Chambers, Executive Lead of Patient Navigation and System Integration with PCA. Nurses are available 24/7 to offer support, information and referrals to new parents and caregivers for the first two months after their baby’s birth.

Albertans can reach the New Parent and Newborn line by calling 1-833-805BABY (2229).

The new line complements a ‘Healthy Beginnings and Early Start Parent Infor-

mation’ line already offered in the Calgary and Edmonton zones, completing universal provincial access for new parents with babies under two months of age.
