Cannady was nominated by the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association, Lovely said, as she presented the medal. Killam Cyclones Swim Club ready to make a splash this season Looking to make a substantial splash this season, the Killam Cyclones Swim Club has already started preparations to host its first swim meet since the pandemic.

Teams from throughout Region D of the Alberta Summer Swimming Association – including Forestburg, Red Deer, Innisfail, Ponoka, Hanna, Lacombe, Castor, Coronation, Olds, and Oyen – are scheduled to converge on the Killam Aquatic Centre on Saturday, July 22.

“The facility is so excited to see a swim meet in their building. It has been too long with COVID shutting us down and a club that was too small to successfully hold a meet. It will be amazing

to see 200-plus swimmers with families in our facility,” says Agriplex Coordinator Chris Kinzer, who also serves as head coach of the Cyclones.

Kinzer coached in the 1990s and early 2000s when her children were swimming. After a short hiatus, she returned to coaching in 2014.

This season, Coach Kinzer will be joined by two new assistant coaches that she says: “Will learn and be ready to take the club over.”

They are Krista Castagna and Jessica O’Hare.

And there’s more reason for Coach Kinzer to be especially optimistic about 2023. “As head coach of the Killam Cyclones, I am so excited to see new faces asking our

club about joining, and returning swimmers from last year and previous years,” she explains.

“It has been challenging the past few years with so much change through the Alberta Summer Swimming Association.

“Change is good, change means growth and growth is the best thing that can happen to an association. We have new parents taking over board positions with

fresh ideas that will help our club flourish.

“We have so many talented swimmers and parents. This year is going to be beyond amazing.”

The Cyclones, featuring two newly designed logos for 2023, are slated to hold their annual Registration Night on Wednesday, March 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Killam Agriplex for all swimmers aged four to 17.

Lougheed welcomes new PACE solar project Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Village of Lougheed will soon be the site of a new solar project by Pathfinder Clean Energy, or PACE. Lougheed Mayor Shawn Sieben says that the company approached Council about the potential project later last year. He says PACE has other solar projects in the province, and came to Lougheed with a proposal for a local project.

Sieben says, “We had a few concerns about the initial contract offer, especially with regards to decommissioning and cleanup.”

He says with assistance from legal counsel, Council negotiated some contract changes, going back and forth with PACE, until the company came back with better terms for the

village.

“The project represents both lease and tax income for Lougheed,” says Sieben, over the long term, with a 30year lease, with an option to extend.

He says PACE did not come looking for any incentives. “They know that many small towns like Lougheed have land within their borders that they have no plans to develop.”

As it happens, the village owns two vacant quarters of land north of Highway 13 by the Seed Cleaning Plant. That land is currently leased out, and Sieben said one of the items negotiated by the village is that the present renter would be unaffected until PACE was ready to begin.

PACE will deal with Alberta Utilities Commission for all licencing and approvals. As Sieben understands it,

the idea is to sell the power generated by the project to the power grid.

A recent public open house was fairly well attended, says Sieben. “I think a lot of people had questions about the project, and Council wanted to make sure there were no major issues from residents.” He says a PACE representative attended the open house to answer questions, something that really impressed him.

“I feel really comfortable about Council’s decision to ratify the agreement,” says Sieben. “Like every town and village, we have a laundry list of capital upgrades that we will need now and down the road.

“This new project provides us with revenue via lease payments and tax revenue. Council is open to welcoming any

commercial development.”

Sieben says he would like to see more families and businesses come to Lougheed. “It’s so affordable to live here, and it’s a great place to raise your family.”

He also says that he thinks it is important for all the municipalities in the region to work together and support one another. “I want everybody to succeed out here.”

Sieben says the village’s search for a new CAO has been successful, with an announcement coming out after this week’s Council meeting. In the meantime, Jet Ruud has taken the role of acting CAO, and Sieben says she’s done a terrific job in the interim.

Hardisty withdrawing from Flagstaff Intermunicipal Partnership Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Town of Hardisty recently declared its intention to withdraw from the Flagstaff Intermunicipal Partnership (FIP).

Mayor Wayne Jackson says, “Our decision to withdraw was not made in haste.

“We determined that FIP was not being utilized as originally intended.

“It did come with a cost and administrative responsibilities that we could not justify.” Hardisty was the managing partner of FIP. Jackson says the decision to leave was passed by Council in November. “It just took us a while to finalize the withdrawal. There were some items needing to be wrapped up, as Hardisty was also

involved with administrative duties for the group, being that we were the managing partner.”

Jackson points out that Flagstaff County Council was the first municipality to withdraw from the group.

He says that CAO Bobbi Usselman attended a regional CAO meeting in February, where Hardisty’s withdrawal from FIP was discussed. “The group seemed understanding and supported our decision,” Jackson says.

Flagstaff County Reeve Don Kroetch recently sent out invitations to all Mayors within the region, to an informal round table discussion. In his invitation, he said, “The past couple of years have made it very difficult to have an opportunity to informally meet and build strong relationships with our regional municipal partners.

“I would welcome a chance to have a round-table discussion with all Mayors in our region and myself to discuss what is upcoming in each municipality, highlight past successes, and outline possible future challenges.

“Through this collaborative discussion, we may find a path forward for solutions to address some of our challenges.”

Unlike FIP, Kroetch said this would be an informal gathering, without agenda or minutes, or pre-determined direction.

Jackson says that Hardisty Council did send a representative, as he was unable to attend. “The meeting was well received and appreciated. I look forward to attending the next meeting.”

He adds, “As you can see, we meet and collaborate with our neighbouring

municipalities quite regularly.

“It is through these types of meetings and carious committees that we can achieve what was intended of FIP, without the cost or extra administrative responsibilities.

“Hardisty takes pride in working together with our neighbours, and we will continue to do so.”

In its letter of withdrawal, the town is asking that a new managing partner be appointed, with the present bank balance, less Hardisty’s portion, to be transferred to the new managing partner for FIP, in the amount of $32,963.81 less Hardisty’s $7,680.32.

Hardisty says they wish to continue as a member of the Flagstaff Regional Assessment Review Board and Intermunicipal Subdivision and Development Appeal Board, a FIP project.

JOHN’S RANT Cowell limo ride was justified as he did his job It really irritates me when someone is harassed for doing their job.

Especially when they have been tasked with a very important job, which takes-in many hours, and they try to do it in a efficient, costeffective way.

Jennifer Lee, a journalist employed by the CBC the national news organization that thrives on government handouts in the billions, seems to have a hate on for AHS administrator John Cowell, after he took a limousine from Calgary to Edmonton to attend the official throne speech last fall and then have a private business meeting with his boss, Health Minister Jason Copping.

Now, Cowell, who had only been appointed to the position a few weeks earlier had vowed to make the AHS more efficient.

The cost of the limousine ride from Calgary to Edmonton was expensed at $1,400.

During the time Cowell was riding in the back of the limousine, not being disturbed by the driver, he privately worked on reports, responded to texts and emails, and generally continued with his busy work day while he was transported to a meeting.

To me that sounds like he was working efficiently. I’ve flown to meetings on an airplane and you can’t get much work done in cramped seats, with babies crying and all the other distractions that come with air transportation. Not

to mentioned the time wasted getting on and off the plane.

Possibly Cowell could have driven himself to Edmonton and back. But he wouldn’t have gotten any work done. And any phone calls would have led to distracted driving which we all know can be dangerous.

A taxi cab or uber wouldn’t serve the purpose either, because it wouldn’t allow the privacy to continue with his workday. The same goes for riding on a bus such as Red Arrow.

Yet, after Lee wrote her story, other lefties jumped all over Cowell stating it was such a waste of money.

Gil McGowan, head of the Alberta Federation of Labor was quoted on the CBC saying the trip just showed the arrogance of someone appointed by the UCP government.

No, his friends in the NDP, would never work this efficiently.

Who knows how they would travel to a meeting when they were summoned, but no doubt there’d be a champagne cost in there somewhere.

The funny thing, though,is McGowan’s comments reported early in the morning on CBC Radio, were subsequently lost with no record of them online.

Former Deputy Premier Thomas Lukaszuk, who seems to have turned into a serious lefty, gas lighting anything he doesn’t like,

also blasted Cowell on Twitter.

He probably forgets when he was caught up squandering $20,000 government money on exorbitant cell phone bills from Europe. He stated at the time the costs were justifiable because he was doing his job.

The CBC story further quoted one Lorina Hardecastle, a teacher of health law and policy at University of Calgary who stated, “The optics are quite poor.”

Well they are if you don’t think the man should do his job efficiently.

AHS defended the expenses in a statement emailed to CBC News. “[He] required the use of a vehicle so that he could work and take calls of a sensitive nature while on the road, and also avoid the expense of an overnight stay,” spokesperson Kerry Williamson said.

“The cost of the travel is equivalent or better than airfare, hotel, parking and taxi use. Dr. Cowell's expenses fall within the Government of Alberta’s expense policy, which allow reimbursement for the expense of using a third-party vehicle, such as a town car or taxi.”

However, Mount Royal University political scientist Duane Bratt , who usually takes a position opposed to the UCP, defended the expenses.

"That seems perfectly reasonable and perfectly normal for me. This is a high-paid executive. That

would allow him to have a driver so he could work while he was travelling between Calgary and Edmonton ," said Bratt.

“When you break it down, it's roughly $100 an hour. Is this someone that we would prefer to waste more time driving... especially when you’re going to multiple meetings? I don’t have a problem with this.”

Now, for comparison, in no attempt to balance her story Lee conveniently forgets to seek out the expenses of CBC executives from when they travel to Ottawa to plead for more money to keep the ailing, bloated organization going.

She was only concerned with the spin of the optics. Sometimes, when someone is doing their job, the optics can be overrated.

Health Minister Jason Copping told CBC, “I appreciate $1,400 looks like a lot of money and it is a lot of money.

“We asked Dr. Cowell to deliver on results so we can fix the healthcare system, This is comparable for other options on that particular day.”

Really, news reporters should sometimes, consider the optics of their reporting before just bowing to the pressure from their editors to create a narrative which will leave the potential to damage a person’s reputation.

Violet McNabb (Roth)

Violet was born to Ferdinand and Teenie Roth on May 19, 1935, and passed away on March 3, 2023, at the age of 87.

Vi attended Galahad and Forestburg schools before she went to Henderson Secretarial School in Calgary.

Fred courted Vi while in Calgary. They married October 23, 1953, and were happily married for 57 years.

Vi took nine years of piano and really enjoyed playing. She also enjoyed

playing cards, bingo and visiting with family.

In later years she played a lot of crib and was hard to beat.

She was in Killam Continuing Care for over 13 years. She became good friends and loved to tease and joke around with the staff. She loved doing puzzles while she lived there.

Vi is survived by her children Eileen, Dennis (Michelle), Wes (Wendy), and Lynda; 13 grandchildren; 25 greatgrandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Vi was predeceased by her parents Ferdinand and Teenie Roth; husband Fred; daughter Deanna; son Wade; sons-in-law Don, Terry; granddaughter Peggy; greatgranddaughters Alexandra, Renesmee; brother Alfred (Alvina); grandson Kyle.

FAITH I can only look back now on those tender years and smile because my life has changed in so many ways. As a Protestant minister in the United Church of Canada, I now reflect upon Lent as a time of encouragement and growth in discipleship.

So, what is Lent really about anyway? Well, if you consult a dictionary or encyclopedia (I’m dating myself), or just search the internet, which most people do these days, it will tell you that it is a time of solemn observance in the church year for many Christian denominations that begins on Ash Wednesday and stretches out about six weeks (40 days) before Easter Day. During this Lenten time that we are now in, believers enter a preparatory time of prayer, penance, atonement, self-denial, and inner reflection. Lent began as a forty hour fast by new Christian converts in preparation for baptism during the Easter vigil.

This was in remembrance of Jesus' forty hours in the tomb. The Lenten fast eventually became a fortyday observance for most Christians.

Forty is in fact a very significant number when

speaking about Bible stories. For instance, Noah's flood lasted forty days and forty nights. The Israelites wandered in the wilderness for forty years after the Exodus from Egypt.

Moses fasted for forty days before receiving the Ten Commandments.

Jesus fasted in the wilderness for forty days at the beginning of his ministry.

OBITUARIES Roger Paterson

Born: January 12, 1930 Died: March 3, 2023 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of loving husband and father Roger Paterson on

March 3rd at the age of 93.

He was born in Shediac, New Brunswick, to parents Robert and Dauphine and predeceased by his three brothers Henry, Alfred, and Philip.

Roger left school at an early age as he was tired of being disciplined for speaking English at the French catholic school he attended.

His early teen years saw him working on his brother Phil’s lobster boat, cutting pulp, farm laboring, and a variety of other jobs that would take him across the country, riding the rails, at the age of 13.

He joined the Canadian forces in Korea and after 12 months was seconded by the US for a couple more months.

On his return he spent a year hospitalized in a sanitarium for T.B. Upon his release he headed north and worked for awhile on the construction of the Goose Bay airstrip then hit the rails again to travel across Canada to BC where he gained employment working at the Gang Ranch and others around Ashcroft, Hat Creek, and Highland Valley.

His other venues included working under-

ground, horse logging, and even rodeo for a short time with the likes of Kenny McLean, Dave Perry, and Percy Minnabarriet.

It was in Highland Valley that he met wife Jackie while guiding hunters for her father. After a couple of years, they settled in Spences Bridge while he worked on the new bridge.

Deciding to make his own place, he purchased 110 acres and the old station house of Clapperton in the Nicola Valley. After 14 years he left the fully developed, from sage brush to hay ranch, to move to Merritt.

Kim Cannady honoured with Platinum Jubilee Medal by MLA Jackie Lovely in ceremony that also recognized all Flagstaff’s firefighters Leslie Cholowsky Editor

MLA Jackie Lovely spoke to assembled firefighters from all around Flagstaff County last Wednesday, March 8, at the Forestburg Fire Hall.

She said, “I’ve been trying to get this to happen for over a year now; this is a really big deal to me.”

Lovely said she’s been attempting to put forward legislation giving acknowledgement to volunteer firefighters.

“This started way back for me, my desire to show appreciation for firefighters; way back from when I was a kid.”

Lovely said she was 10-years-old, living on the farm, when one night she woke to see lights flashing. “I thought the school bus had come too early. I started yelling, ‘The bus is here. The bus is here!’ My mom and dad got up and it wasn’t the bus. It was the middle of the night and our shed was on fire; where they stored all of the farm equipment.”

While Lovely called the fire department, her parents entered the burning building and drove out each individual piece of equipment. “My dad went in one more time when it wasn’t safe.

Thank goodness our volunteer fire crew got there when they did, because they went in and they pulled him out. He is alive today because of the work those folks did.”

Her father survived, and still lives on the farm.

Lovely said to the firefighters assembled, “Thank goodness to people like

you. They went into that burning building and they saved him; I’m so grateful for that.”

She told another story of a Camrose home that she passed regularly that suddenly just wasn’t there one day. A neighbour told her that a fire started in the garage, and firefighters responded but were unable to save the home, but did save the cat and the surrounding homes.

Lovely says she’s heard similar stories from others about heroic deeds of local volunteer firefighters.

She said its her intention now to thank every firefighter at every fire department in her constituency.

“This one is very important to me. I just want to say thank you so much.

Thank you again for all the work that you do and all the people that you help, because oftentimes when people are in crisis, you are seeing them at their very worst day, and you are able to turn things around.”

She noted that firefighters are now called to support EMS calls, too, something she added her appreciation for.

Lovely then announced that she had a Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal presentation to make, to Kim Cannady. She asked Forestburg Deputy Mayor Dwayne Giroux to assist her with talking about the medal itself before calling Cannady up.

“The Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee Medal Alberta is a tangible way to publicly acknowledge the work and dedication of those Albertans who are

actively contributing to our province and country, and to pay tribute to the example set by our late Majesty throughout her lifetime.”

Giroux read the following: “The Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee Medal Alberta has been conferred in recognition of Kim Cannady. Active local member of Fire and EMS, as well as Rural Crime Watch, Fish and Game Association, and Firefighters Association, and a lifelong dedication to community service.”

Cannady was nominated for the medal by the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association.

Lovely called Cannady forward to receive his medal. “I’m pleased to award you the QEII Platinum Jubilee Medal, created by the Province of Alberta, to mark the 70th anniversary of her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, accession to the throne as Queen of Canada. For 70 years, her late Majesty exemplified the true meaning of public service. The Platinum Jubilee Medal honours those who have reflected that same dedication to the service of family, community, and country.

“Therefore, as a Province, we are taking this opportunity to recognize the outstanding service of Albertans who have much to build and enhance our province; you are among this distinguished group.

“In granting you this honour, I thank you for your dedicated service to your peers, your community, Alberta, and to Canada. The contributions you have

made to our province are highly commendable and deserve our praise and admiration. May you wear this medal with justified pride in your own accomplishments and in commemoration of the significant milestone in the history of the Crown in Canada, and in remembrance of our late Monarch. I wish to convey to you the heartfelt congratulations of your fellow Albertans; to which I add my own.”

Lovely pinned Cannady’s medal on his dress uniform. She said, “Kim, I know you just wanted me to hand you this in a back alley, but thank you for allowing me to present it to you here.”

She also thanked him for his service as Galahad’s Fire Chief.

Firefighters from every department in the FRESS region were on hand to congratulate Cannady, and then receive their own honours.

Lovely then called up firefighter John Hays, from the Galahad Fire Station, and presented him with a 12-year Service Medal.

“You were nominated by the Chief to receive this medal,” Lovely said, thanking Hays for his long service to the community.

Lovely proceeded to present all Flagstaff Regional Emergency Services Society firefighters with Alberta Legislature Certificates of Appreciation; to everyone in attendance as well as those unable to attend.

“I’m going to call you up one by one and I’m going to shake your hand and thank you.”

Battle River School Division hopes to access excess reserve funds Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Battle River School Division (BRSD) Board has recently made an application to the Minister of Education to access its own reserve funds; recently classified as ‘surplus funds’ due to changes in regulations governing how much school boards may hold in unrestricted reserves.

BRSD says Alberta Education determined that divisions may only accumulate unrestricted reserves equal to that organizations’s allocation for system administration. For BRSD, that is 3.27 per cent of its total budget.

For many years, however, BRSD had a policy in place outlining that the equivalent of be-

tween one and five per cent of the organization’s funds should be kept in unrestricted reserves.

“This helps ensure the school division can be responsive to opportunities or crises that may arise,” says the board.

Divisions must apply to Alberta Education to access any unrestricted reserves, and so BRSD must receive permission to spend the surplus reserve funds. Failing to reduce the totals to the new allowable levels could impact funding for future school years.

The board has therefore submitted two proposals to Alberta Education for consideration, it says.

The first requests access to $1.268 million that will be used to increase mental health staffing

and programming; address growing technology needs; and provide training for bus drivers to meet current licencing requirements.

The second proposal seeks $2.55 million to renovate and furnish a central services building. The board had considered borrowing for this purpose earlier in the year, but says accessing these reserves would allow the project to move forward, and eliminate the need to borrow at all.

The new building, purchased in 2021, once renovated, is large enough to house all BRSD staff in one location, eliminating the present three worksites, which could then be sold.

The division must receive approval from the Minister of Edu-

cation before acting on either of the proposals.

Flagstaff County Trustee Dwight Dibben attended the annual Alberta Rural Education Symposium that happened from Sunday, March 5, through closing on Tuesday, March 7, and will be reporting on this event at the next division board meeting.

BRSD is moving forward with an Attendance Boundary Review in the coming months, says the board.

“This review is intended to help Trustees receive public feedback and consideration about whether existing attendance boundaries, which were put in place the th time the school division was formed in 19095, are still effective, efficient, and serving the school division

well.”

Four public meetings will take place, all with the same agenda so that the public can choose which meeting time and place suits them best.

These will be held Monday, March 20, in Ryley, Tuesday, March 21, in New Norway, Monday, April 3, at Ecole Camrose Composite High School, and Tuesday, April 4, at Killam Public School.

Finally, BRSD has announced that three long-time staff members will be retiring at the end of this school year. These are Shirley Fairall, Executive Assistant to the Board and Superintendent; Diane Hutchinson, Director of Communications, and Shan Jorgenson-Adam, Deputy Superintendent.

Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch group wins Farmer’s Advocate Award Leslie Cholowsky Editor Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch Society (FRCW) recently found out that the group will be receiving a Farmer’s Advocate Office Award for Excellence in Rural Crime Watch.

Society executive members Lynne Jenkinson and Jan Bergseth found out about the

award recently, and submitted a nomination application just days before close.

The Farmer’s Advocate Office says, “The Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch is receiving our award this year for efforts to promote participation in training courses required to obtain a firearms Possession and Acquisition licence.

“Our office chose your organi-

zation based on the success of this program, which has resulted in increased participation by residents, especially women, participating in the program.”

The best of seven series between the two adversaries started Thursday, March 2 when the Wheat Kings travelled to Wainwright to come away with a 3-2 win.

Play continued on Saturday, March 4 in Wainwright, with a 2-1 final for the Bisons to tie the series at one apiece.

Play moved to Killam on Wednesday, March 8, but the Wheat Kings weren’t lucky at home, coming away with a 6-2 loss, and leaving the Bisons up 2-1 in the series.

The Bisons got on the scoreboard early, then poked in another, before Killam’s Kohl Forster scored a goal, from Kyler Bergseth and Chance Reum, to make it 2-1 heading into the second period.

The Bisons scored that period’s only goal, to make it 3-1 heading into the

final period.

The Bisons managed three more to make it 6-1 before Carter Burton scored a final goal for the Wheat Kings for a 62 final.

This put the Bisons ahead by one in this best of seven series.

The series stayed in Killam, with another game on Friday, March 10, where the Wheat Kings added another win to their tally.

The only goal of that game came from Killam’s Brandon Zunti, assisted by Matthew Pfeffer, for a 1-0 win, and a series count of 2-2.

The series went to Provost on Saturday, March 11, where Wainwright took a 6-2 win, to lead the series 3-2.

The Bisons got on the board first with an early goal, but the Wheat Kings scored an answering goal less than a minute later, from Kobe Charchun, assisted by Burton and Kale Hurlburt.

One more goal from Wainwright put the Bisons ahead 2-1 at the end of the first period of play.

The second period saw a Wainwright goal from Jackson Pasztor, to take the

Bisons ahead 3-1 heading into the final period.

Kale Hurlburt scored a quick goal in the third to make it 3-2, but Wainwright was able to score three times in that period for a 6-2 final.

The two teams faced off next on Monday, March 13 in Killam, with the Wheat

Kings in a must-win position to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Monday’s game ended with a 2-1 final, but no game details available.

With that win the Bisons have knocked the Wheat Kings out of the finals and ended their season.

Hughenden U11 Female Jets won two playoff games over Battle River on the weekend. On Saturday, Hughenden won a 7-2 game at Irma Arena led by Maris Amundson’s four goals. Raeanna Pentland scored twice, and Lily Nguyen added the other. Assists went to; Harper Pearson (2a), Holly Motley (2a), Sutton Jones, and Dallas Holte. Aubree Poulsen got the win in goal. Scoring for BR was Makenzie Muirhead with two, and Elouise Armstrong picking up an assist. On Sunday at Irma Arena, Jets won a 9-2 game. Charlie Child (1g 1a) and Makenzie Muirhead (1g 1a) scored for Battle River and Hadley Freadrich got an assist. Hughenden’s Holly Motley scored a hat trick in a four-point game.

Other Jets scorers were; Sutton Jones (2g 1a), Lily Nguyen (1g 1a), Maris Amundson (1g 1a), Callie Prost (2a), Ara Kim (1g), Dallas Holte (1g), Harper Pearson (1a), Leena Kim (1a), and Aubree Poulsen (1a). Sarah Mackie got the win in goal.

Battle River U15 Female Knights beat Lakeland in a playoff game on Saturday 53 at Cold Lake. BR overcame a 3-2 deficit heading into the third where they scored three unanswered goals. Surai Thomson had a four point game (2g 2a). Other scorers were; Emma Galletly (2g), Ella Younger (1g), Avery Dolany (1a), Kora Lefsrud (1a), Danica Boger (1a), and Kherington Paterson (1a). Maddison Eckstrand got the win in goal.

Battle River U18 Female Knights dropped a 3-1 game against St. Paul on Saturday at Killam Arena. The game was tied 1-1 late in the third period when Canadiens scored at 12:19 and then added an empty netter for the win. Caylin Brumwell scored for BR, assisted by Brooklyn Blatz and Rylee Zimmel. The teams met again

on Sunday in St. Paul where BR took a close 2-0 win home with them. Caylin Brumwell scored both BR goals and Alyssa Zimmer and Rylee Zimmel assisted on the first one. Abby Krys made all 25 saves for the shutout.

Hughenden U11 Jets played in a playoff tourney in Consort over the weekend, winning three and losing just to the home team on Friday. On Friday, Jets dropped a 5-2 game with Reid Walters scoring both goals and Myer Bomersback assisting on both. On Saturday, Jets beat Cold Lake 3-2 as Laine Ference, Grady Anhorn, and Myer Bomersback each scored, while Jacob Redekop, Liam Flynn (2a), Kahle Peacock, Reuben Congdon, and Gauge Hunter got assists. Hudson Hunter got the win in goal. Also on Saturday, Jets beat Wainwright 9-1 with seven different goal scorers; Laine Ference (2g 1a), Reid Walters (2g 1a), Emmett Peacock (1g 1a), Myer Bomersback (1g 1a), Kahle Peacock, Liam Flynn, and Reuben Congdon. Ryan Carson, Javier Hope, and Gauge Hunter picked up assists. Hudson got the win in goal. In the final game of the weekend, Jets beat Lac La Biche 7-4 led by Emmett Peacock’s (1g 3a) 4-point game. Other scorers were; Ryan Carson (2g 1a), Reid Walters (2g), Laine Ference (1g 1a), Myer Bomersback (1g), Kahle Peacock (1a), and Gauge Hunter (1a). Hudson Hunter got his third win in goal over the weekend.

Hughenden U13 Jets played a weekend playoff series with Elk Point, winning two of three. On Friday at Hughenden, Jets won a 2-1 game when Mason Larson scored with 7:09 remaining to break a 1-1 tie. It was Mason’s second goal of the game. Trusten Dyck set up both goals and Sadie Hunter made 24 saves for a .960 save percentage game. On Saturday at Elk Point, the home team took an early 2-0 lead and held on for a 4-2 win. Alex Ference and Bria Sayer scored for Jets. Trusten Dyck, Kylan Johannesson, and Jaxon Sayer assisted. On Sunday back at Hughenden, the two closely matched teams were tied 1-1 going into the final period when Jaxon

Sayer got the winner 7:31 in and the Jets held on for the win. Mason Larson also scored. Trusten Dyck assisted on both goals. Other assists went to; Brynn Chisan and Gracie Currier. Sadie Hunter stopped 26 of 27 shots for the win in between the pipes.

Battle River U11s split two playoff games against Castor over the weekend.

On Saturday at Killam Arena, BR won a 96 contest having taken the lead four separate times before finishing off the visitors.

Hudson Sparrow led the way with a six goal game. Other scorers were; Jacob Kinzer (2g), Braden Swainson (1g 1a), Luke Freadrich (2a), and Greyson Eckstrand (1a). Lane Jackson got the win in goal. On Sunday at Castor, the home team came back from a 5-2 deficit and won an 87 game. Braden Swainson scored a hat trick in a four-point game. Other scorers were; Brady Wesley (1g 2a), Hudson Sparrow (1g 2a), Bentley Clark (1g), Jacob Kinzer (1g), and Grady Bergseth (1a).

Thunderstars U11 skated to a 3-3 tie in playoff action with Red Deer on Saturday at Daysland. TS led 3-0 but RD came back with three in the third. Jules Forster scored two and Jorja Strauss also connected, while Evan Grymaloski picked up an assist. Davin Pfeffer stopped 29 in goal. On Sunday at Red Deer, the home team took an early lead and skated to an 8-5 win.

Sedgewick Sabres and Oyen Eagles play deciding game in series Leslie Cholowsky Editor Sedgewick and Oyen started their best-offive series on March 3 with a 4-3 win for the Sabres in Oyen.

Play moved to Sedgewick Saturday, March 4, where the Sabres soundly beat the Eagles 8-2, going up by two games.

The pair met again in Oyen on Friday, March 10, in another nail biter, this time with Oyen coming out ahead, 5-4.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard first with a mid-period goal, then Sedgewick tied it up on a late period power play, by Spencer McClements, unassisted.

Oyen popped two goals early in the second period to make it 3-1, before Quinn Johnson scored for the Sabres from Curtis McKinlay to make it 3-2, then Chase Schatschneider scored unassisted to tie it up heading into the final period.

Clay Lang put the Sabres ahead 4-3, from Schatschneider, but Oyen scored an answer-

ing goal to force overtime.

The Eagles scored first in OT taking a 5-4 win.

Play continued in Sedgewick on Saturday, March 11, where the Eagles flipped the tables again, beating the Sabres 7-2.

Oyen dominated the scoring in the first period, managing a goal in the first seconds of the game, and a power play goal in the last minute of the period, with one in between to go up 3-0.

Clay Lang put the Sabres on the score-

board in the second period, with assistance from Brett Gagnon, to make it 3-1 heading into the final period.

Oyen pulled ahead 4-1 with an early goal, but Spencer McClements scored on a power play, from Carter Ortman and Curtis McKinlay to make it 4-2.

Oyen scored the next three to bring the game to a close at 7-2, forcing the tie breaker, which took place Tuesday, March 14, in Oyen (results after press time).

Curtain Call prepares for second weekend of big laughs Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Curtain Call Theatre group debuted their latest production, Love, Lies and The Doctor’s Dilemma on the weekend, with loads of laughs.

With the final rehearsal Thursday evening, the actors had one last chance to fine tune their performances before opening night, and took advantage of it to perfect their lines and their roles.

This year’s play features a cast of six, but it seems like more as the evening goes on. It all starts with Joan Scheller and her live-in partner Sandy dreading a visit from Joan’s sister-in-law Olivia St. Claire.

Not only is Olivia a movie star, but she’s also a little self absorbed and condescending, at least she starts out that way!

Kara Pearcey plays Scheller, and she does an absolutely fantastic job. She’s so relaxed and natural on stage that you’d swear she really is Joan.

Through the course of the evening, while Joan swears she only tells little white lies, somehow they get out of control as Sandy somehow becomes Dr. Gardener, the psychiatrist.

Poor Sandy, aka Eugene Gustafson, is forced to go along with the lie, the first of many, as the evening goes on.

Soon Vinny the Enforcer shows up with his lovely “Bertha,” looking for Joan’s son Chris, then movie-star Olivia, played by Pam Sherman, arrives and announces she’s planning to stay longer than just a visit.

Joan’s little white lies get out of control and lead to mistaken and whole new identities when her son Chris shows up with a few white lies of his own.

Everyone has their own agenda, and despite a little well-meaning but off-themark advice from the ‘doctor,’ things are moving along well until walking disaster neighbour Rachael shows up, played by Nancy Ambler.

“Well, it wasn’t my fault, but...” becomes the one line that makes every-

body cringe, as this adorable actresswanna-be neighbour charms the rest of the cast but almost causes Vinny’s demise.

When you take this oddly charming mix of characters and add some special brownies and plot twists, it’s a recipe for a lot of laughs.

Gustafson is the voice of reason as Sandy; he joins the cast for the third time since leaving Castor Little Theatre, and perfects the straight man to a whole bunch of high-jinx.

Pam Sherman is the ultimate movie star as Olivia St. Claire, slumming with the little people as she writes her memoir. Whether she’s dripping with diamonds, giggling over brownies, or making eyes at Vinny, she brings a lot of vibrance and life to this over-the-top character.

Ambler plays the loveable but dangerously dizzy Rachael to a tee, as she returns to the Curtain Call stage, with laugh-out-loud stunts and a super highenergy performance.

Nathan Lunty returns to the Curtain Call stage in this production, and his portrayal of Vinny is a physical masterpiece, as he survives multiple “accidents” caused by, you guessed it, Ambler as Rachael.

Making his debut on the stage is Tristan Nelson, who plays Pearcey’s wanted-by-the-mob son Chris, who is not above some little white lies of his own!

Robert Ponto is the director this year, with Darcy Jahns help him out during an absence.

The pair whipped this cast of talented actors together to pull of a charming and hilarious comedy that you won’t want to miss.

It’s another hit for Curtain Call, and with one more weekend left, with Friday and Saturday dinner theatre, and an almost-full matinee Sunday; better get your ticket now! Once again the crew will be hitting the road for the Bailey Theatre when they close in Forestburg.

New neighbour Rachael, Nancy Ambler, loves to drop by and visit Joan Schellerʼs house, Kara Pearcey, especially for those yummy, magical brownies!

There were 19 in church today for the communion service led by Reverend Steve Haughland.

I stopped by the old Buchanan Agency building, the old post office, and met the new owner, Mike MacLeod.

He lives in Sylvan Lake and he is planning on starting a business in Alliance. He’s not quite sure yet what kind of business, he tells me.

Sylvan Lake is getting too crowded in the summer for them and he liked the idea of our small village. He has a wife who is a nurse in

Red Deer and a 16- and 17-year-old.

The farmer’s market is back for the third Wednesday of the month, as before.

The Senior’s Club will be having a bake sale at this market.

Senior means experienced baker, right? So I can count on some good cookies.

I missed the Women’s Institute (WI) meeting last Wednesday, as did several others. I was on my way home from Mexico. Vickie Cloakey was just getting back from Newfoundland. Lori Fess was in Ontario for her daughter’s bridal shower.

Donna Inkin was in BC. We will have to have another meeting to finalize plans for our 110th anniversary and District conference on Saturday, March 25.

Sedgewick bowling sees fresh faces at the top of the scoreboards Sedgewick bowlers made the most of that extra hour last week.

The YBC hit the alleys on Tuesday, March 7.

For the Bowlasaurus Boys Lynden Odegard bowled the high single of 125 and Cohen Storbakken bowled the high double of 168. Harrison Eckstrand and Cohen Storbakken are tied for the high average of 73.

For the Bowlasaurus Girls Kenna Bruce has the high average of 77.

For the Bantam Girls Stella Erikssen and Jeana Smith bowled the high single of 104 and Smith bowled the high triple of 287. Jeana Smith has the high average of 98.

For the Bantam Boys Grant Foster bowled the high single of 138 and the high triple of 392, Foster has the high average sitting at 80.

For the Junior Boys Thomas Bruce bowled the high single of 124, triple of 319, and holds the high average of 99.

Willow Odegard had the top scores for the Junior Girls, with a single of 169, triple of 451, and av-

erage of 132.

Sedgewick Ladies Afternoon Bowling knocked down the pins on Tuesday, March 8.

Karen Keogh bowled the high single of 223 and the high triple of 617.

Verna Erickson has the high average of 180.

As for the teams, the Bowling Bags scored the high single of 117 and the high triple of 166. The Bowling Bags remain in the lead with 93 points.

The bowler of the week was Theresa Sparrow, with 50 points above average. Kim Bullee, Trish Bergseth, and Barb St. Pierre bowled three spares in a row while Sharon Wylie bowled a TV shot.

There will be a virtual presentation from the Osteoporosis Society that I hear is a very good part of the conference, as well as a handicraft competition for WI members.

Karin McCracken has agreed to teach a crochet class in conjuction with the Athabasca University and Alberta Women’s Institute’s event in the Alliance Community Hall.

It will be in the hall because we will be connected virtually to two other locations for a speaker and sharing with these two events using the technology in the hall, a few of the Ag Society members are going to

check out the equipment during the market.

If all goes well some of the interviews done for the 100th anniversary of Alliance will play.

I knew that Dixie was planning something on the weekend for my birthday, but I was surprised that a dozen of the tribe showed up with a great assortment of potluck.

Vickie Cloakey provided a beautiful, tasty birthday cake. What a privilege to live so long and in good health and know that I am loved.

This year, the Cyclones are offering two practice options to better meet the varying abilities and desires of all swimmers.

There will be a green group designed for

younger swimmers or those not wishing to attend many meets.

This is a great level for kids to get their feet wet in the world of competitive swimming, as the focus will be working on swimming techniques and introducing swimmers to the sport.

There will also be a

purple group, designed for dedicated swimmers focused on competitive swimmer development.

Purple swimmers and their families are expected to be leaders within the club.

If you are uncomfortable making a phone call, this job is not for you. Past customer service experience is preferred. No previous newspaper-related experience necessary.

Well hello folks. Isn't it exciting that we are now on daylight savings time?

Also known as summer time, when clocks are set ahead, so that darkness falls at a later time.

It begins the second Sunday in March and lasts till the first Sunday in November. I think it is wonderful, but it is not fully embraced across all of Canada. It is just another bit of change that lets us know that spring is coming. Yipee!

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all the folks that celebrate this special day, this weekend. May you all experience the luck and love of the Irish.

This weekend I joined 10 other dedicated volunteers who made their way to a larger city to work at a charitable casino.

Now what the heck does that really mean?

Well, charitable casinos allow groups, various clubs, and etcetera to assist in the numerous jobs required to be run at a casino. This is a tightly regulated industry and clubs are put on a waiting list to get a chance to work at a casino.

In return, they receive shared profits that have considerable financial value.

The volunteers’ jobs are fully explained and scru-

tinized by a gaming advisor, who is basically your boss for your eight hour shift. She explains all the policies and procedures that your position entails and ensures that she will oversee you and be available immediately for any assistance.

I did not realize how stringent the rules were for gaming, but it is actually comforting that it is so highly regulated.

It was a little nerve wracking, but once I was comfortable in my job, the two nights just flew by.

My buddies and I were totally entertained. We were in a locked room with cage like windows and we dealt with giving cash payouts. We were always on security cameras.

People brought over their winning chips and you reimbursed them with cash or the dealers at the gaming tables needed more chips and we supplied that also.

I have never seen so much cash handed out in my life and so many happy and sad faces.

From our caged room we could partially see some of the gaming tables and the shrieks of winners and the moans of losers were audible.

Our staff even received tips that will be given straight to the Hardisty Library. Now isn't that cool? The casino had tables that you could play: Roulette (the wheel), Baccarat (cards), Poker, and Black Jack (cards). They might have had more

games, but I was not aware of them.

When you walk into this large casino you are inundated with the flashing lights of the slot machines, VLT's, and a ring-a-ding of sounds that entice you to keep on playing, as well as the magnificent array of all the colours of the rainbow.

All these external stimulants are meant to grab your attention. Put $5, $10, $20, or more into the slot and, just maybe, you to will be a big time winner?

It is so addictive because it is so exciting and

just pulls you in, to hit that button just one more time. The next button might just be the winner?

Come on, just press that button one more time, it is only money!

Hopefully you have a strong character and can call it quits when you have reached the limit of your entertainment budget?

Winning and losing is all part of the casino experience. It is exhilarating, rousing, and electrifying.

It grabs you.

Like one young player said to us at the cash window, "Heh man, I don't do this often, but man it's fun, Now I

am going home." Good for you!

In closing, we send heartfelt gratitude to all the dedicated volunteers, the wonderful casino staff who fed us and the staff that guided us, advised us, and helped us to count the money at the end of the night. It was mind blowing for the first time workers. Hope we will see you again in a few years.

The advent of spring always brings to mind the wretched task of spring cleaning.

I have no idea who invented this task, but for all of you who despise it,

I have a saying for you, "I find it helps to divide chores into categories: Things I won't do now, things I won't do later and things I will never do!"

There you go, problem solved. Now brew a cup of coffee and read a good book. Dust will still be there next week.

Remember that Easter arrives in about threeand-a-half weeks.
