Thieves pulverize Lamont Servus Credit Union Michelle Pinon Editor

The Lamont Servus Credit Union’s alarm went off during the early hours of Monday morning. A Massey Ferguson 1085 tractor equipped with a front end loader took out a substantial portion of the bank, and then a truck with chains attempted to remove the Automated Teller Machine (ATM). According to Fort Saskatchewan RCMP, the tractor and truck that were used during the break and enter were both stolen. “At this time police can confirm that, entry was gained into the Lamont Servus Credit Union by using a tractor, which was stolen from a nearby business. At present, it has been determined that five suspects, with the use of the stolen vehicle, removed the ATM from the building, however, the ATM machine was not removed from the site. Both the stolen tractor and stolen vehicle were recovered at the scene. The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP are currently awaiting security footage, and the investigation continues. Mike Dickinson, a spokesperson with Servus Credit Union said this is the first time the branch has been broken into, and in this type of manner. At this time, Dickinson does not know how long it will be until the bank is re-opened, but is relieved no staff or customers were in the building at the time of the robbery. Police ask if you have witnessed the incident, can identify the suspects or have any information about the break and enter to contact Fort Saskatchewan RCMP at 780-997-7900. If you want to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477 (TIPS) or at www.tipsubmit.com

Property crime rising and local bank the latest victim Michelle Pinon Editor

Everyone was buzzing with news of the break and enter to the Lamont Servus Credit Union early Monday morning. Television crews from CTV, CBC, and Global news were also on scene mid-morning to capture video footage for the six o’clock news. In fact, many people took pictures while driving by the scene of the crime along 47th Avenue during their travels. ‘Can you believe it?’ was the most common response from folks who couldn’t help but shake their heads at what had happened and the destruction that took place under the dark blanket of night. While it is a shock, it wasn’t all that long ago that the Value Drug Mart’s front entry was rammed into by a vehicle, and and an undisclosed amount of money and prescription drugs stolen from the premises. The Chipman Market has also been targeted on a couple of different occasions as well over

the past year. As Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch recently stated, “Crime can happen anywhere.” No business, or residence for that matter, are impervious to crime. The effects of crime are devastating on many different levels and cause much destruc-

Sgt. Nutbrown also pointed out that you don’t know if the thief or thieves have a weapon on them, and that the average person does not have the tools to perform

a risk assessment of the situation either. Sgt. Nutbrown also noted that RCMP have been able to get convictions based on footage from trail cameras. Visibility also plays an important role in policing, and Staff Sgt. O’Neill said the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP Detachment has had success with the Heartland Citizens On Patrol, and recently two suspects in a break and enter in Bruderheim were apprehended because of volunteers with Heartland Citizens on Patrol.

Opinion The dollars and cents of the NDP’s carbon tax don’t add up While Albertans have been struggling to pay their mortgages at the end of the month, the NDP government has been very busy trying to spin their $3-billion dollar carbon tax as revenue neutral. Sadly, for families and businesses, it will only lead to cost increases that will make the end of the month that much harder. The carbon tax is not revenue neutral, and in fact will make everyday life - from driving your car to buying your groceries, from heating your house to turning on the lights - more expensive. This is, of course, a significant worry for everyday Albertans who are already dealing with the worst economic down-

MLA Grant Hunter turn since the 1980s. It’s a tax that sends the wrong message. It’s a tax that we simply can’t afford. This tax will cost a typical Alberta family an extra $1,000 per year or more. For many families, this could mean the difference between paying

for dance classes or registering for hockey or just being able to pay for good-quality groceries. To date, the NDP government has been digging their heels in and doubling down on their support for taking an additional $3 billion in a way that isn’t revenue neutral from Albertans and Alberta businesses. The fact is, the overwhelming majority of the funds raised from this new tax will go directly to new government programs and pet projects. Wildrose’s concerns about the carbon tax have now been supported by those who are the backbone of our economy – small business owners.

Despite the significant role Alberta’s small businesses play in building our communities, poor government policy now means most of them are being strangled in new taxes, regulations, and red-tape. It’s hard to believe, but Alberta’s small and large business taxes are now the highest in all of western Canada. With the low price of oil, many of the NDP government’s new policies are simply making a bad situation even worse. A recent Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) survey has found that 82 per cent of small business owners surveyed do not support the introduction of a carbon tax. An overwhelming

Watchdogs of many kinds needed to guard and protect the public interest It was with great interest that I read a recent news release from Municipal Affairs Minister Danielle Larivee announcing she would be taking action to ensure responsible and accountable governance for Thorhild County residents. The Minister also appointed an official administrator to fulfill the responsibilities of Council until a by-election can be held to replace three councillors who were removed from office as a result of an inspection ordered by Municipal Affairs. “The inspection was carried out in 2015 in response to a public

petition,” stated the news release. The Minister went on to say the official administrator will focus on maintaining normal county operations until a by-election can be held to elect three new councillors and re-establish a full Council. The byelection also must take place within 90 days. “It’s unfortunate when actions like this are required, but the provincial government has a duty to ensure the Municipal Government Act (MGA) is being followed, so trust and integrity can be maintained at the local level. The circumstances in this case are extreme

and action had to be taken to protect the interests of Thorhild residents.” An independent inspector found substantial evidence of irregular, improper, and improvident actions on the part of Thorhild County Council. As a result, the Minister issued a series of directives in September 2015, requiring council to make various corrections and adopt good governance practices. “Council has made progress to date in implementing those directives, but certain councillors opposed Council’s efforts to achieve compliance. As

a result, three councillors have been dismissed from Council.” While this might be an extreme case, it does point to the fact that sometimes councillors and/or administrators, or both, can be negligent and irresponsible in their duties, act improperly, or bend the rules to suit their own agenda. I, for one, am glad there is a governing body to oversee the actions of elected officials and municipal administrators who are to work in the best interests of ratepayers and not themselves.

majority (79 per cent) fear that the carbon tax will lead to a spike in operating costs, and even more (81 per cent) don’t think that a carbon tax would do what it was originally intended for – help to reduce emissions. At a time when small business confidence is in free fall, and one-third of respondents to another CFIB survey expect they will have to reduce staff, we are in desperate need of an NDP course correction. The last thing that small businesses need when they are just trying to balance the books and keep staff employed is a harmful carbon tax grab. The good news is, it isn’t too late for the NDP government to reconsider their non-revenue

neutral $3-billion dollar carbon tax. You can be sure that Wildrose will continue to urge the government to cancel this illadvised policy, and to stand up for Albertans instead of kicking them while they’re down with new tax measures. I’d encourage all Albertans to write to our province’s NDP MLAs and let them know how you feel about the carbon tax. It is my sincere hope that together, we can stop the NDP government from making things even worse for everyday Albertans and small business owners. Grant Hunter is the Wildrose Shadow Jobs Minister and the MLA for Cardston-Taber-Warner.

From Where I Sit: Reading List

By Hazel Anaka For a while now I’ve been making a list of the books I read in a calendar year. It’s nothing as fancy or official as entries in a book journal but it’s better than nothing. I list the month, book title, and author. Period. If I could locate the lists I’ve made in previous years (sigh) I could plot the busyness of my life. The more hectic my life, the shorter the list; the greater the gaping hole in my work/play life balance. With March upon us I’m happy to report that I’m on my eleventh (and twelfth and thirteenth) title. Having a few different genres on the go keeps me satisfied. That total doesn’t count the four (so far) audio books

I enjoy in my car. I only listen if I’m alone in the car. Roy would rather listen to some radio station playing old pop rock music. Looking back at my 2015 list reveals that I binge read mystery thrillers. A couple were Gillian Flynn’s including Gone Girl. (FYI, the book is better than the movie.) Throw in a Sandra Brown and five or six Tami Hoags. Surprisingly I fell in love with her because of an audio book. While listening is clearly different than the silent reading of a paperback it is so satisfying when the prose is beautiful and technique strong. The only anomaly on that list was Todd Burpo’s Heaven is for Real. This book chronicles the true story of three-year-old Colton Burpo’s trip to heaven and back. This too is a page-turner of a different sort. Absent so far on any list are War and Peace and other equally challenging reads. Part of me aspires to that; part of me doesn’t give a damn. Snobbery be damned. It seems that increasingly I just want easy, fastpaced escapism. I want a book that grabs me by

the lapels and pulls me headlong into the story. It expects nothing more of me than stolen moments of attention every chance I get. As much as I’m enjoying these guilty pleasures I don’t feel any need to keep them in my personal library. They will find their way into my garage sale box. I haven’t been able to part with any audio books yet because I believe I will listen again. I find it somewhat scary that new vehicles have only one disk player and those may become obsolete. Are disks going the way of the eight track or

cassette? Say it isn’t so. I intended to reread To Kill a Mockingbird in anticipation of the release of Harper Lee’s upcoming second novel. The announcement seemed like an incredible plot twist especially with quotes attributed to the media shy author. Soon after, someone close to her disputed the claim saying she was sick and incapable of making those statements. Is this a publisher running amok taking liberties with a frail woman’s legacy? Is this a real life mystery? Either way it’s sure to make it onto my reading list from where I sit.

I firmly believe that it’s important to be an active participant in the communities that you do business in and to operate with integrity, and to give back in some way that helps the community grow. I put a lot of care, attention and personal flair into everything I do and to receive an award such as this, that recognizes women making a difference, is just very special, humbling, and exciting.” She went on to say that it was especially nice to have a whole table of ladies from the Town of Bruderheim. It was very heartfelt and touching that they came out to celebrate the evening with me and my family.”

Enbridge hosts community supper and construction information night in Bruderheim Michelle Pinon Editor

More than 70 people were in attendance during Enbridge Pipelines Community Supper and C o n s t r u c t i o n Information Night for its proposed $1.4 billion Norlite project. Lisa Seeley, Public Affairs Advisor Western Region for Enbridge Pipelines Inc., said they received lots of positive

feedback on the event, and were very happy with the turnout. “Construction is scheduled to start in August this year, and as safety is our number one priority, we wanted to share our safety message and give the residents in the community a chance to ask any questions they might have.” The Norlite Pipeline Project involves construction of a 24 inch diameter diluent

Peter Hansen with Enbridge gave a pipeline presentation to more than 70 people in attendance at the event.

pipeline that will start from Enbridge’s Stonewall Terminal and end at the Suncor East Tank farm near Fort McMurray. According to the company, the 447 km pipeline will ship diluent, a product that is used to make heavy oil lighter and easier to transport, to and from those locations. As well, there will be construction of four 3,000 HP (2,237 kW) mainline pumps, and a 1,000 barrel tank at the Suncor site. Whenever possible, the pipeline route will follow existing pipeline rightsof-way, utility corridors and road allowances to minimize the environmental impact. The crude oil and liquids pipeline is expected to be in service by the Spring of 2017. Expected initial capacity is estimated at 130,000 barrels per day. Production can go up to 400,000 barrels per day at peak capacity.

Lamont Figure Skating Club Carnival presents The Wonderful World of Disney

Tinkerbell, played by Pheonyx Harpe has a friend among these Canskate figure skaters as they covered the ice during the annual carnival on Sunday, March 13.

Belle, played by Maureen Fedyniak, looks like the elegant princess she Love Is An Open Door as exhibited by the Canskate Group 4 figure skaters. is with her graceful form.

There were plenty of cute characters during the tribute to all things Disney during the spectacular show that had terrific backdrops, costumes, and props for all of the performers.

Princess Jasmine, played by Bryana Hawyrluk, is a graceful vision on the ice.

On Wednesday, March 9, representatives from Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS), Global Electric Electronic Processing (GEEP), and the Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA), presented a $2000 cheque to Andrew School for their second place finish in the E-Waste Collection Challenge within EIPS schools. Bruderheim School (First place winner) and Andrew School collected the most e-waste in the Lamont and Strathcona County schools, plus the two Vegreville schools. Holding the cheque are student Caelan Zabrick; Chair of ARMA, Bob Barss; EIPS Superintendent, Mark Liguori; GEEP Sales Manager (AB), Andrew Lis; student Alex Slasynski; and Andrew School Principal TJ Kennerd. Andrew School collected a total of 1692 lbs of e-waste. The $2000 will be put towards literacy and math resources, student activities, etc. A thank you to our Andrew School community for assisting us in this huge challenge.

With St. Patrick始s Day quickly approaching, Andrew School has another pesky problem with leprechauns. Every March they cause chaos in the classrooms. They turn over desks, chairs, scatter papers, and leave little green footprints in their wake. In an attempt to curb this problem, students have been asked to design some new and improved leprechaun traps. As always the students have come through with some interesting and decorative traps. Look out leprechauns, Andrew School is ready for you!
