Rodeo closer to being named Alberta’s official sport
MLA Jackie Lovely's Bill 205 to make rodeo and chuckwagon racing the official sport of Alberta had its second reading at the Legislative Assembly on March 13. A large cross-section of the rodeo community attended the reading at the Legislative Assembly to show the rodeo and chuckwagon communities support of the bill. Premier Danielle Smith along with Nate Horner, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, and Jackie Lovely MLA for the Camrose Constituency, joined representatives from the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association, Alberta High School Rodeo Association, and Alberta Pony Chuckwagon Association among many others to show their support for the bill.

After defeating the Hughenden Jets, the Irma Aces earned a spot in the semi finals, facing the Provost Combines in the best of five series. Things started out in Provost on Friday, March 3, where the Aces got dealt a 3-0 loss. The next night play moved to Irma, with another loss, at 43 for the Combines. Provost had a strong first period
Saturday, scoring three goals.8 Irma came alive in the second, with their first goal coming from Taylor Schubada, assisted by Zach Mackay and Tyler Ganie late in the second, then another at the two-minute mark, again from Schubada, this time assisted by Tyler Fischer and Mackay, to make it 32 Provost heading to the final period. Fischer scored mid period for Irma to tie things up, assisted by Schubada and Justin Ganie. Provost scored late in the period to
go ahead 4-3, winning the game and ending the season for the Aces. Friday, March 10, was “do or die” night back in Provost for the Aces, with another close finish that just didn’t go their way. Irma got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Taylor Schubada, assisted by Ross Herzog and Tyler Fischer, then Provost tied things up to end the period 1-1. Zach Mackay put Irma ahead again seconds into the second period, but
Provost scored on a power play to tie things back up. Fischer put Irma ahead by one, at 32, from Schubada and Jordan Mackay, then Zach Mackay widened the lead to 4-2, from Herzog and Jordan Mackay. In the third period, Provost scored an early goal to come within one, then another to tie things up 4-4. Provost scored twice more to make it 6-4, then sealed things with an empty netter to make it a 7-4 final, knocking the Aces out of contention.
