Another Hilarious Hit for Curtain Call Theatre

The long awaited return of live theatre arrived in Forestburg this past Friday, March 11, with Curtain Call Theatre’s debut of Sin, Sex and the CIA, a play by Michael and Susan Parker.

Director Neil Lunty said the casting almost took care of itself this year, with a host of returning actors all giving strong performances in this zany ensemble cast.

One of the highlights of opening night was receiving a text from the play’s author, Susan Parker.

Two sold out nights in a row demonstrate how happy locals are to return to live performances. Full story P17.

Daysland’s newest Centenarian Victor Gabruck receives Quilt of Valour at celebration Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Daysland’s Victor Gabruck not only celebrated his 100th birthday with friends and family last week, he also received a special presentation from Quilts of Valour.

Gabruck celebrated first with his fellow residents at Providence Place, joining the Centenarian Club there, and sharing his special 100th cake, prepared specially by staff, and featuring golden stalks of wheat to mark his life as a farmer.

Gabruck’s family and friends also threw a special party for him at the

Daysland Community Hall, where Bob Prospero from Quilts of Valour-Canada was on hand.

Prospero says, “On Saturday, March 12, I had the incredible honour and privilege to present Victor with his quilt.

“Vic served from Nov. 10, 1942, until his honourable discharge on June 16, 1946.”

Prospero says Gabruck was extremely happy and appreciative to receive the quilt, which was hand crafted by Quilts of Valour quilters Diane Scarisbrick, Judy Cook, and Marilyn Nichols.

“On behalf of all Canadians, thank you Vic, for your service.”

Hardisty Auxiliary donates to rural nursing Pictured: Carley Herbert (Economic Development Officer for the Town of Wainwright), Florence Sather (Hardisty Auxiliary), Jamie Malone, Wainwright Health Centre Area Manager, and Charlotte Nickel, Auxiliary President, displaying the $5,000 donation recently made by the Hardisty Hospital Auxiliary to the Rural Nursing Degree program at the Wainwright Health Care Centre.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has partnered with the University of Calgary and the Town of Wainwright and MD of Wainwright to pilot a four-year Bachelor of Nursing Degree program.

The program will have eight spots open to rural Alberta applicants on an annual bases.

Applicants must live within a 120 km radius of the Town of Wainwright. The program will be delivered online and in-person in the Wainwright area.

To run this program, clinical equipment is required.

The Hardisty General Hospital Auxiliary Guild has recognized the value of this program and the importance it will play in our rural area in the future, to hopefully assist in keeping our rural hospitals open.

A donation of $5,000 was generously given to support this.

A cheque was presented to Carley Herbert, Economic Development Officer for the Town of Wainwright, and Jamie Malone, Wainwright Health Centre Area Manager.

Presenting the cheque on behalf of the Auxiliary were Charlotte Nickel and Florence Sather.

Flying clubs donate proceeds to dog rescues

The Camrose Drive-In Airshow ʻSpeedbird Jamboreeʼ would not be possible without the support of generous sponsors and Airshow fans who paid admission. With proceeds from last summer's airshow, organizers were pleased to present a $1,500 donation to Canine Love Dog Rescue Society (Daysland) in memory of Snowbirds Public Affairs Officer, Captain Jenn Casey.

On hand/paw to make this special presentation were Captain Casey's local friends, Humphrey (representing the Iron Creek Flying Club) and Lexi (representing the Camrose Flying Club). On March 8 at 2:25 a.m., RCMP received a complaint of a stabbing behind the Old Garage Bar in Wetaskiwin.

Upon police arrival, the victim, Colter Jared Buffalo (29), had serious injures and was taken to Wetaskiwin Hospital.

Unfortunately, Colter died as a result of his injuries.

RCMP investigators on scene quickly identified and arrested a suspect.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit was called and took over the investigation.

As a result of the investigation RCMP have charged Dale Arthur Kemp (31) of no fixed address with First Degree Murder.

Kemp has been remanded in custody with his next appearance set for March 31 8:30 a.m. at Wetaskiwin Provincial Court.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released.

LETTERS Reader: Action needed now Reader: A leadership problem

on new curriculum rollout

Dear Editor; Why should parents and grandparents stand up and fight the draft curriculum?

Because there is no one else left. The teachers, academics and School Boards have been protesting for a year, and nothing substantial has changed.

Show up at the protests in Calgary, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge or Red Deer on April 2. Or alert local media to your own local protest April 1 or 2, even if it’s just chalking messages on the sidewalk at the MLA’s office or on the public sidewalk at school. For more information go to https://ditchthedraft.ca/ Three subjects are being implemented in K-6 in September 2022: Math, English Language Arts and Literature (ELAL) and Phys Ed/Wellness.

Phys Ed/Wellness. Next year when parents ask, “What did you do in gym today?” students may answer: “Financial Literacy.” Desk work.

For 12-year-olds: mutual funds and bad debt. Or perhaps the child will reply, “Wellness. We learned about Consent.” Where young children facing a potential abuser learn they just need to communicate refusal clearly. Or maybe the child will say, “Today we had to study stuff for the test.” Because there is a “knowledge” column for Phys Ed of stuff that has to be “learned,” and an alarming amount of the outcomes in the “skills and procedures” column also use verbs that involve no movement at all. The draft Phys Ed/Wellness curriculum is a sad piece of work that needs a do-over.

Math: Instead of developing a deep understanding of number relationships and using analysis in problem-solving, students will apply a “standard algorithm” to everything.

“Standard algorithm” is mentioned 26 times, but no examples of a “standard algorithm” are given. Additionally, careless errors with sequencing mean certain failure for children. In Grade 3 students must: “Convert commonly used units of measure between metric and Canadian (imperial) units within 100.”

This will involve multiplying decimals but children won’t learn decimals until Grade 4 and won’t learn multiplying them until Grade 6.

Grade 2s work with numbers to 1,000 and add and subtract two-digit numbers, but place value isn’t taught until Grade 3. The draft Math also needs a do-over.

ELAL: The teaching of phonics will be done through a lockstep program that was developed in haste for the piloting year and then was only tested for six months instead of the full year.

Now it will be prescribed material for the next 10 – 30 years. There is also a focus on teaching sight words in isolation, from prescribed lists, but the lists are not even published in the curriculum! In both cases the instruction is divorced from reading words in context and understanding what is read, which should be the main goals of reading instruction.

After three years of rigid programming in phonics and common sight words, in Grades 4-6 prescribed reading includes Shakespeare, Aristotle, Cicero and dramatic works from ancient Greece or Rome. Do-over!

Parents, Grandparents, Members of the Public, make yourselves seen and heard on April 2.

Protest the Draft Curriculum. Our children deserve better than this.

Dear Editor: Looming on the horizon is the encroaching dawn of a dystopian society in which the oligarchy of the ruling class (especially AHS Admin.) seeks to define the tenor of our freedoms and businesses. The maladroit handling of the COVID virus outbreak has caused our Premier and his gaggle of brain trust to engage in sophism in a rather bizarre attempt to manage their dismal popularity. Adopting Bolshevik-style tactics where those who think and conducted their lives in an unsanctioned manner are deemed enemies of the ruling class and persecuted and prosecuted accordingly.

To blame the unvaccinated or those not following the rules for the calamity within AHS like delayed surgeries and “putting our system at risk” is a sophistic argument. Sophistry dates back to the great Greek minds, constituting the use of a fact in an argument to make your point even though you know the point is false. In the vernacular of Barak Obama: “you can put lipstick on a pig but it is still a pig.” This rational is a repeat of long-standing Canadian faults and is akin to blaming Uncle Tac for being Japanese. Then took his family’s livelihood and property away and interned him and his family during WW2; under the misguided and fallacious pretense that “we are going to save Canada from a Japanese invasion.”

Or my nephew’s ancestors, who spent six years as children in concentrationstyle camps in the interior of BC where they only got to see their parents once every other week through a chain link fence: their crime being practicing Doukhobors. These internment camps were heinously barbaric yet were sanitized with the idea that this is for the “good of society.”

Two other of my nephews are members of a Blackfoot band in southern Alberta. There are no words that can fully communicate the horror that we have done to our first nations people. Yet the same words and thinking that doomed them to residential schools are resurfacing today in our present crisis.

All these people, including the unvaccinated the Chris Scott(s), Dr. Modry(s), and the James Coates, have one overwhelming commonality: They do not trust the government to adhere to the law. These failings cannot persist if we are to live in a free, democratic, constitutionally founded, charter honouring, society.

In the words of the late President Reagan, “The most terrifying nine words in the English language are: ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’”

What we suffer most acutely from is not COVID but a deprivation of leadership.

Battle River U11 Female Knights dropped two road games on Saturday. In game one, BR lost 8-0 to Irma Aces. In game two, Fort McMurray downed BR 5-2. Abby Galletly and Grace Edwards scored for BR. Thunderstars U11 sere scheduled to have a playoff game at Tofield Arena on Sunday but no score was posted at deadline.

Battle River U11 Knights dropped a 10-3 playoff game at Bashaw on Sunday. Parker Clark scored twice for BR with Jacob Kinzer picking up the other. Jake Grant got BR’s only assist.

Thunderstars U13 beat visiting Westlock on Saturday 5-3 in playoff action at Forestburg Arena. Westlock scored with 5:15 remaining in the game to close the gap to 4-3 but Wyatt Berkey put the game away with a goal with 1:10 remaining. Luke Stang had a 5-point game including a hat trick. Other scorers for TS were; Logan McNabb (3a), Wyatt Berkey (1g 1a), Miikka Schmidt-Teigen (1g), Carsen Bendfeld (1a), and Levi Robbins (1a).

BR shooters Brody Wallner and Ethan Clark scored.

Lucas Docksteader scored twice, while Ethan Clark (1g 2a), and Braxten Kueber (1g) added the others.

Wyatt Vancleave picked up an assist. Kohen Leslie made 41 saves for the win.

The U15 BRK team will be hosting Provincials March 24-27.

Hello folks. It is exciting to see down our gravel country road and actually see the gravel and not deep snow or a skating rink on the road.

What a winter this has been! I cannot recall so many days of rain showers in the middle of winter and then freezing weather and so much snow.

Thank goodness I am married to a farmer who has access to snow clearing equipment. He gets the snow cleared in a heartbeat compared to a person with a snowblower or a shovel, but he also pays dearly for this big equipment.

Daylight savings time makes us all smile. Now we can still see daylight past 5 p.m. and the world seems to come alive with opportunity.

You can walk the dog a little later, run to the grocery store, or just pick up a newspaper and still see without the aid of street lights. Life is good. The best part is that you can recognize your friends and neighbours without their masks.

Some folks still wear them for added protection and that is their choice, but personally I am thrilled to breathe in the fresh air.

I have been reading a few magazines and many reporters are writing about the importance of socializing.

I have mentioned before that people really do need people. Barbara Streisand, the famous female vocalist, had a famous song titled, "People, people who need people,” are the luckiest people in the world.

So if you have a few very close friends that will listen to your tales of woe, happiness, or just general everyday living, count yourself

blessed.

The one magazine, Macleans, mentioned that loneliness kills and friendships preserves.

There is really nothing else - not exercise or even quitting smoking that matches the positive effect on mental and physical health as having friends. The journalist mentioned that the best predictor of longevity and survival is friendships.

Isn't it interesting that they are not pushing some new diet or fabulous pills to enhance your life, but just the feel good rush you get when your friend gives you a big hug and says. "Man it is so good to see your happy face again. You have no idea how much I have missed you! Give me another hug.” Your face beams with joy, your heart rate relaxes, and you take a deep breath of fresh air... life is good.

All of this was free therapy, a smile, a hug, and now for a cup of coffee and an hour of chit chat. Your batteries are recharged and you can get on with your day.

Happiness rolls downhill and suddenly the noisy kids, the hungry dog, and the chore of cooking yet another supper are not as daunting and why? Because your soul has been touched by another soul, you have experienced friend-

Are these gadgets not working?

Are the people promoting and selling these things lying to us?

Or are our lives just more consumed with trying to get ahead?

My question has always been: Ahead of who?

See I guess there is still something inside of me that longs to appreciate the importance of taking time to “stop and smell the roses.”

We are so obsessed with the “urgent” things in life, that we fail to take time for the important.

Doukhobor-built elevator still standing 107 years later on local farm Jonathan J. Kalmakoff Submitted

On a country road northeast of Sedgewick stands a grain elevator that has dominated the local landscape for over a century and was once an important mainstay of the town’s economic prosperity and agricultural industry.

Few today would guess that it was communally built by Russianspeaking Doukhobors.

The following is a brief account of its history.

In April 1915, fire consumed the original 40,000-bushel Alberta Farmers’ Cooperative Elevator Co. (AFCEC) grain elevator in the village of Sedgewick, burning it to the ground.

Built three years earlier in 1912 by the Farmers Elevator Co. of Sedgewick Ltd. at a cost of $8,000 and sold to the AFCEC in 1914, its destruction was a devastating loss to the small farming community.

Undeterred by this setback, the next month, the AFCEC issued a tender for the supply of lumber and labour necessary to rebuild the village grain elevator, along with the construction of several others, before the next harvest.

In June 1915, the contract was awarded to the Doukhobor communal organization, the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood (CCUB) at Brilliant, BC. The Doukhobors were proficient elevator builders at the time, having constructed seven grain elevators in eastern Saskatchewan and southern Alberta as part of their own agricultural enterprise along with several others built under contract for grain companies.

Having a large unpaid communal labour force and manufacturing many of its own building materials, the CCUB had a significant competitive advantage over other building contractors.

In early August 1915, four rail cars of 2 x 8-inch fir lumber arrived at the

This was followed by a passenger car of approximately 25 Doukhobor workmen from Brilliant, who promptly set up a tent camp and commenced construction work.

The new elevator was built on the existing foundations of the original elevator, located at the west end of the rail siding south of the main Canadian Pacific Railway line, across from Tupper (now 49th) Street.

Labouring 15 hours a day, the Doukhobors built the wood crib walls of the structure higher and higher, installing the leg, spouts, distributor and other equipment as they proceeded. Within a few weeks, their work was complete.

The new structure was a ‘standard plan’ tall elevator of wood crib construction clad in tin on a concrete foundation, about 40 x 40 feet wide

and 70 feet high, with a cedar shake roof and gable cupola facing north-south.

It had a storage capacity of 45,000 bushels of grain. An attached driveway and receiving shed was built on its south side, along with a detached office and engine shed. A large storage warehouse was built on its west side.

The grain elevator at Sedgewick was one of nine built by the Doukhobors for the AFCEC in the summer of 1915.

The others were located at Travers, Enchant and Lomand on the Canadian Pacific Railway line; Lavoy, Vermilion and Morrin on the Canadian Northern Railway (Canadian National Railway after 1923) line; and Huxley and New Norway on the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (Canadian National Railway after 1919) line, for a total of 335,000 bushels of grain capacity.

lumber (36 rail cars, each carrying 50,000-70,000 board feet) from their Kootenay sawmills for building materials.

An estimated total work force of 100-200 men (25 man crews completing one-two elevators each over two-three months) provided the labour.

Upon completion in mid-fall 1915, the Doukhobors returned to their communal settlements at Brilliant. The CCUB was paid $60,300 under the contract, averaging $6,700 per elevator.

This revenue was deposited into a common treasury for the benefit of all members of the communal agricultural and industrial enterprise.

By all accounts, the AFCEC was quite satisfied with the Doukhobors’ work.

At its third annual convention held in Calgary in November 1915, the company president reported to 200 delegates in attendance that the elevators built under contract by the CCUB that season were “considered the best erected in the province both in workmanship and material.”

As for the Sedgewick elevator, the AFCEC operated it for three delivery seasons from 1915 to 1917. Then in November 1917, the company amalgamated with the Grain Growers’ Grain Co. to form the largest cooperative enterprise in the world, the United Grain Growers Ltd (UGG).

UGG operated the Sedgewick elevator with little change for 37 years until 1954. In that year, a 30,000-bushel rectangular wood crib annex with a gable roof was added on the west side, thereby expanding it storage capacity to 76,000 bushels.

It was around the same period that the original equipment was upgraded: the original gasoline engine was replaced with electrical equipment; the truck-dumping mechanism was improved; larger scales and larger and longer movable loading spouts to facilitate the loading of

The enlarged and upgraded UGG elevator operated for another 21 years before it was finally delicensed and decommissioned by the grain company in early 1975.

By this time, the grain elevator had operated for 60 years serving the Sedgewick farming community.

In 1975, the UGG elevator was purchased by local farmer Ronald Bergseth. He previously bought the Alberta Pacific Grain Co. elevator in Sedgewick in 1974 to relocate to his farmstead; however, while it was being moved, it tipped over one mile east of the town and was destroyed.

He had better luck with the UGG elevator, which was successfully moved in three separate parts (elevator, receiving shed and annex) and set up on new foundations at his farm five miles northeast of the town (five miles due north of Lougheed).

The elevator played an important role in the Bergseth family farming operation for 25 years.

It provided high volume on-farm grain stor-

age capable of holding several fields’ worth of grain that could be kept in separate interior storage bins according to seed variety and grade quality.

Located in close proximity to their fields, it improved efficiency during harvest by limiting the time and distance required to haul freshlyharvest grain by truck from the combine and transfer it into storage.

It also significantly reduced the loading time when stored grain was hauled by truck from the farm to the elevator in town for marketing.

According to Ronald’s son Rick Bergseth, the elevator was eventually retired in 2000 in favor of large metal grain bin storage.

Today, the 107-year old structure still stands on the family farm, no longer storing grain but nonetheless fully operational and in remarkably solid shape.

It remains a powerful visual symbol of Sedgewick agricultural history and an enduring testament to the workmanship and quality of its original Doukhobor builders.

Providence Place in Daysland added a fourth centenarian to a special plaque it has maintained since 2018.

Manager Jay Adams says that when Martha Hayworth (shown at the far left) turned 100 years old in April 2018, her family donated a plaque to Providence Place to mark her 100th birthday, and to mark the official start of the Providence Place Cen-

tenarian Club.

Since then, it’s been used four more times, the latest by Victor Gabruck, shown at right with the plaque in hand, on the occasion of his 100th birthday last week.

Other plaque holders are Anthony Heslenfeld and Ann Gregorwich.

All four centenarians gathered last week to celebrate their special achievement.

Hayworth will celebrate her 104th birthday this April.

Sabres fall to Irma in a heartbreaking playoff OT series loss Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Irma Aces advance into the finals after a 3-1 series win against the Sedgewick Sabres.

The two teams were tied

with one win each going into the week.

On Wednesday, March 9, the Sabres travelled to Irma where a hard-fought game ended in a 1-0 final putting the Aces ahead 2-1 in the best-of-five series.

Sedgewick Bowling results Sedgewick bowlers made it to the alleys despite poor roads this week, but the YBC played it safe.

Sedgewick Ladies Afternoon Bowling bowled on March 8. Verna Erickson scored the high single of 243 and the high triple of 606. Her high average remains at 181.

The team high single of 116 points above average was scored by the Rolling Pins and the high triple of 152 points above average was scored by the Pin Pals, who still have the lead with 90 points.

The bowler of the week was Lonnie Bergum, with a score of 44 points above average. Jean Gabruck bowled a T.V. Shot.

Sedgewick Mixed Bowling competed from March 8 to March 10. On the ladies’ side: Verna Erickson bowled the high single of 241 and the high triple of 570. Her high average sits at 185 On the men’s side: Bryce Humes scored the high single of 243 and the high triple of 560.

Garry Klein’s high average sits at the top as 217.

The team high single of 222 points above average was scored by the Bowling Stones and the high triple of 324 points above average was scored by team Water Buffalo. Bowling Thunder remains in the

lead with 93 points.

The bowlers of the week were Pat Leslie, with 80 points above average, and Bryce Humes, with 79 points above average.

Daryl Johnson, Thora Johnson, and Penny Watkins scored three spares in a row. Cindy Rose, Bryce Humes, Mark Erickson, Garry Klein, Jim Coles, Ricky Sheppard, Brent Snethun, and Trevor Lewis all bowled turkeys and Jim Coles scored a T.V. Shot.

Sedgewick Seniors bowled on March 8 and March 9. On the ladies’ side: Verna Erickson bowled the high single of 218 and triple of 526.

Verna Erickson kept the high average, now at 179.

On the men’s side: Garry Klein scored the high single of 238 and bowled the high triple of 625. His high average sits at 218.

The team high single of 188 points above average and the high triple of 385 points above average were scored by Team Erickson, which still in the lead with 88 points.

The bowlers of the week were Sheila Tanton, with 42 points above average, and Brian Rawluck, with 28 points above average.

Richard Erickson and Verna Erickson both bowled a turkey.

Play went back to Sedgewick on Friday, March 11, where a hardfought game ended with an overtime win for Irma, knocking the Sabres out of the series.

The Aces got out ahead on Friday with a goal midway through the first, putting Irma ahead 1-0 going into the second period.

Sedgewick tied it up midway through the second, with a power play goal from Carter Ortman, assisted by Clay Lang and Kyle Sanders, making it 11, but less than a minute

later the Aces scored their second goal of the night, heading into the final period ahead by a goal.

Sedgewick tied it up in the third on another power play goal by Dalton Zemanek, assisted by Curtis McKinlay and Dean Brodie, to force the game into overtime.

Irma scored the gameand series-winning goal three minutes into overtime to put the Aces into the finals.

The Sabres played hard all series long but just couldn’t get the breaks

they needed for the win on Friday. Shots on goal were 41 for the Sabres, to the Aces 40, with superb goaltending on both sides throughout the series.

In an upset that no one saw coming, the Stettler Imperials, who just joined the league this season, forced the league-leading Provost Combines to a fifth game in that series, winning game five and advancing to the finals.

The two teams were tied with one home win each going into this past weekend. On Friday night, the

two met in Provost where the Combines won 8-4 and took a one-game lead in the best-of-five series.

The following night, the two met back in Stettler where the Imperials won a hard-fought match in overtime, to tie the series up.

The do-or-die game was played Sunday, March 13, back in Provost, where the Imperials took a decisive 6-3 win, and the series.

Now the Imperials will face off against the Aces in the finals, a best of five series that starts Friday, March 18, in Irma.

Lexie Ingram had her 11th birthday with quite a celebration. There were guests from Westlock, Lexie Drevant and daughter Emberlynn, Kyle Mathewson, and Charlee who are relatives of Janelle Simla, Andy Ingram's partner. They all enjoyed bowling at Galahad.

Mary Wold is a patient in the Killam Hospital.

She went in a couple days ago.

I received word of the passing of Marilyn Thomas. Marilyn was found unresponsive in her room on Tuesday, admitted to hospital and passed away Wednesday night with her sister at her side. Funeral services will be held in Acme on Saturday at the United Church with burial next to her parents as per Marilyn's wishes.

The posters are out for Meet Your Neighbour night, look for them at the market on Wednesday. Yes, Wednesday will be a farmer’s market, it seems like a long time since the last one so come on out and socialize.

Thursday is Saint Patrick's Day and there's an event going on at the arena so you have another chance to socialize.

There were 11 people in church on Sunday to share in the worship with Carson Ryner leading the service.

Betty Spady was playing piano, Donna Chalifoux made the lunch.

Week the of the Hope Hunt took families to the Lougheed Ball Diamonds, where participants were encouraged to build a snowman using a snowman kit provided by the Camrose Family Resource Network.

Each kit contained snowman essentials such as sticks, rocks, mittens, toques, and scarves. The other stop was at the Allan Johnstone School playground in Hardisty. The snow was perfect for the activities of making snow

angels and playing on the playground.

T h e treasure for each family to take home was a homemade squishy snow kit from Flagstaff Kids' Connection Daycare and a mini-kite from the Sedgewick Community Church of the Nazarene.

At each stop along the Hunt, families also collect a puzzle piece of a snowman, which they will assemble at the end of the hunt. Families can then submit photos of their snowmen to be entered to win a prize.

The Sedgewick Legion recently donated $20,000 to the Sedgewick Wildrose Co-op Recreation Centre to help with the roof replacement project. That defi-

nitely deserves a shoutout!

I know the Legion in Hardisty has mentioned they have been hit hard by the pandemic and are struggling. They are doing an online auction to raise funds and asked the public to help. They rely on rentals and donations and obviously there haven't been many rentals since COVID-19 hit.

It’s been a long two years of mandates, but many have been lifted. The Sedgewick Lions Club is planning a dance at the hall on April 30. If you are ready for an evening of fun, music, dance, and food please save the date.

I just had a call from Pete's cousin Marie down in Texas. It's so nice to be able to keep in touch with all these wonderful people.

I had a phone conversation with Norma up in Yellowknife and also talked with Mary Lockwood down in Calgary this week.

Sin, Sex, and the CIA: a witty combination for Curtain Call Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Sin, Sex, and the CIA. What a combination, and what a hit for the Forestburg Curtain Call Theatre!

Friday, March 11, and Saturday, March 12, performances were the opening weekend for the theatre group, after an extended break due to the pandemic.

The ensemble cast had the audience in stitches as they portrayed a quirky group of characters caught in a remote CIA safehouse who bumble and fumble their way around an important top-secret meeting.

It’s so ‘top secret’ in fact, that who is meeting whom is anyone’s guess, including the principals.

Dale Litke plays the hapless Luke James, a newly minted CIA graduate whose attempts to secure the meeting place backfire hilariously.

Pam Sherman plays the part of Margaret Johnson, who while attempting to negotiate an important deal for the State Department is also trying to negotiate her way into care-

taker Daniel Warren’s affections. Warren is played by Rob Nichols.

Unexpected guests add to the mystery of who’s who when the Reverend Samuel Abernathy, played by Robert Ponto, his innocent assistant Millicent, played by Kara Pearcey, and neighbour Heather Ann Farady, played by Nancy Ambler, get thrown into the mix. A surprise visit by ‘Ranger Don,’ played by Brooke Horton-Pearcey, throws the audience even further off track.

Who are the good guys?

Who are the bad guys? It’s anyone’s guess until the end.

What’s never in question is the superb casting, and never ending hilarity, as the cast pairs up in the most unusual ways.

Margaret’s open play for Daniel’s affections seem doomed to fail, as the straightlaced ex-Marine is seen sneaking into neighbour Heather Ann’s room; while Reverend Samuel also finds himself in several compromising positions with Heather as the evening wears on.

Dear, innocent Millicent almost steals the show as she de-

velops a taste for a spot of brandy and sets her eyes on Chef Luke, whose impromptu cover of a narcoleptic cook hides his real identity of CIA agent. What the CIA stands for comes under question as Luke bumbles his way through the night.

Neighbour Heather has some secrets of her own, but she finds time to school Millicent on the finer points of seduction while also fending off the Reverend herself.

Ranger Don appears to be the only sane person around, or is he?

As the evening unfolds so do the laughs, as this zany cast of characters finally sort out who is who.

Add a superb dinner, and an outstanding support crew who create the awesome backgrounds, wardrobe, lighting, sound, and cast support, and you end up with a production that’s guaranteed to provide a terrific evening’s entertainment!

With three performances left in Forestburg this coming weekend, the troupe will then take the show on the road to Bailey’s Theatre in Camrose.

The ever vigilant but ever-clueless CIA agent Luke James (Dale Litke) suspects everyone in Sin, Sex and the CIA, including Reverend Samuel Abernathy (Robert Ponto.

Tele-evangelist Rev. Samuel Abernathy (Robert Ponto) finds himself in the most compromising positions. Surely no one could be that accident prone. Or could they? Poor neighbour Heather Ann Farady (Nancy Ambler), seems to be an innocent victim of his clumsiness, while Daniel Warren (Rob Nichol) and Margaret Johnson (Pam Sherman) canʼt help but giggle over the circumstances.

Well that didnʼt go precisely as planned... Bumbling CIA Agent Luke James and Millicent find themselves in a bit of a predicament.

OBITUARY Robert (Bob) William Hanrahan

(October 12, 1925 March 6, 2022) Robert (Bob) William Hanrahan was born on October 12, 1925. He grew up in Daysland under the watchful eye of his parents, Bill and Ann Hanrahan.

Bob lived a life full of sports, travel, and time with family and friends, until his passing on March 6, 2022, which was the same day as Norma’s birthday.

Bob did his schooling in Daysland, and he worked in the Post Office alongside his dad, who was the Postmaster.

When WWII broke out, Bob enlisted in the Navy and was sent to Quebec, where he served in the military post office. After he was discharged, he re-

turned to Daysland. When his dad retired in 1956, he became the new Postmaster. On February 23, 1949, he married Norma Kvittem and that loving relationship lasted for 58 years, until Norma’s passing in 2007.

In 1958 Bob and Norma welcomed their first son, Jim into their home, and the family became complete with the arrival of their second son David in 1961.

They resided in the living quarters above the post office until Bob’s parents passed away in 1971. They then moved to the family home where Bob lived until 2019.

Throughout his lifetime, Bob was very active in the community.

He played a pivotal part in rebuilding the golf course in 1949, spent 48 years with the fire department, and 19 years as Chief; helped to organize the ambulance service and drove for 20 years; had been a Legion member for over 70 years; was a lifetime member of the Curling Club; was a town councilor and served as a

funeral director for over 70 years, having started at the ripe old age of 16!!

He was honored in 2011 at a DaysArts concert for his long-time service to the community.

In 2012 he was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for significant contributions to his community and country. These are only some of the achievements he attained during his lifetime. He remained active with several organizations well into his eighties.

Bob started playing hockey with the Daysland Northstars at age fourteen and continued for 25 years.

He finished his hockey career playing with the Camrose Maroons and the Goodtimers. He was honored by the Northstars when they retired his #10 jersey. Even after his hockey days were done, he continued to skate and also floor curled at the Sunbeam Centre in his eighties.

In 2019 Bob made the decision to sell his home and move to Providence Place.

He had nothing but good things to say about his new

home, especially the staff and the food!

Then, in October of 2021, his health declined and he spent four months in the Daysland Hospital, where both he and his family so appreciated the care and compassion he received from the staff.

He moved to Bethany Meadows on March 2, 2022, but sadly, just as he was settling in, he passed away a few days later.

Bob was a strong, kind, steady presence in the lives of his family and will be sorely missed. He was such an important part of birthdays, reunions, weddings, and our daily lives. We were so lucky to have him with us for so many years.

Bob will be forever remembered and sorely missed by his sons Jim (Holly Bailey), and Dave (LeeAnne); grandchildren Melanie (Ryan) Cornforth, and Kristin (Adam) Johnson; great-grandchildren Rhyelle, Rowan, Avery, Hudson, and Parker; brother Bill; sister Linda (Brian) Spiller; nieces and nephews, Neil (Tanya) Spiller, Shannon (Jayden) Brandt, Colin Spiller; Dean

Rev. Brian Hunter. Interment has taken place in the Daysland Cemetery.

If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Bob’s memory may be made to the Daysland Hospital Foundation, or to Daysland Providence Place, or to the charity of one's choice.

In the Field: Why leave the wetlands?

The urge is almost irresistible. Take out all trees, bush, and fill in the sloughs and wet areas. One nice, open field maximizes field efficiency and machinery use. More acres means more crop, right? Not necessarily! Wetland and bush patches do provide a useful purpose related to crop production. It isn’t just for wildlife or biodiversity. Also, it is illegal to drain wetlands, without license or authorization from Alberta Environment. Failure to get approval can mean you are liable for costs to re-establish the wetland.

Those producers who are yield mapping their fields know some areas are less productive than others. If an area is low yielding, it probably has some clay in the subsoil with poor topsoil. The wetlands you drain will not be very productive as, even drained, they will collect and hold water in wet years. Often, especially in our county, there is a salinity issue and a bathtub ring of salts around the margin of the wetland. This will limit crop growth

and yield. Also, annually cropping those areas will only result in the salinity problem getting worse. It is doubtful those areas around and in low areas will be productive parts of the field.

So, what advantages do you get from leaving wetlands? There are several and they include greater resilience during drought in the area immediately adjacent to the wetland. The wetland acts as a reservoir to hold and slowly distribute moisture to surrounding soils. They can prevent overland flooding and sheet erosion. They can act as a biological filter for fertilizers and pesticides and can actively store carbon.

Furthermore, wetlands are a refuge for biodiversity and insect populations which can provide improved pollination of canola within about 100 meters of the wetland. They also act as a refuge for predatory insects, helping control crop-damaging insect pests. You could lump all these benefits under ecological

services. Just for aesthetic reasons, wetlands provide habitat for wildlife. For ducks and geese the habitat provides nesting areas and hunting opportunities in the fall.

Just because you fill in or remove a wetland doesn’t change the fact that water has to go somewhere. Removing wetlands, is expensive, and rarely productive.

They are a general cost, not profit, to the field. If you fill in wetlands there will be more overland flooding and this creates problems between neighbours. You move water off your farm and you flood your adjoining land.

If you have livestock, those potholes are valuable sources of water for cattle and other grazing animals. You usually see that livestock producers leave their wetlands because they know the value of them.

Flagstaff county’s, Agriculture Service Board, have developed a program to provide the grass seed, labour and machinery

to seed down small areas around wetlands, free of charge. The idea, here, is to seed areas that are frequently too wet to farm, adjacent to wetlands, that can provide forage. Rather that struggle each year to seed these awkward areas, a grassed area will provide some feed and improve the field efficiency of the rest of the field.

Wetlands are an overall benefit to both the agricultural producer and society at large. There are many benefits to retaining them, as opposed to removing them. Alberta Legislature celebrating Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Leslie Cholowsky Editor

This year, Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate her 70-year reign in a celebration called the Platinum Jubilee.

The Alberta Legislative Assembly is inviting Albertans to share congratulatory messages, personal stories, or photos of their favourite memories related to the Royal Family.

“Many Albertans share a deep connection and admiration for the British monarchy,” said Honourable Nathan Cooper, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.

Albertans may join the Platinum Jubilee celebrations by composing congratulatory messages for the Queen and by sharing original artwork, photos, videos or memories related to the Royal Family on the

Legislative Assembly’s website at assembly.ab.ca. Messages and images may also be submitted on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using #ABLegJubilee.

The Legislative Assembly will feature a selection of submissions online and in a video presentation to be unveiled later this year. Additional initiatives including on-site tours and displays are being planned throughout the year.

The Platinum Jubilee marks the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty’s service to the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

For seven decades she has been an enduring symbol of the constitutional monarchy in Canada. She has served as head of state of Canada since 1952 and is royal patron to over 600 charities, associations and organizations, of which 36 are in Canada.

Alberta has historically recognized ju-

bilee milestones. To mark Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, Colonel (Ret'd) the Honourable Donald S. Ethell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta from 2010 to 2015, hosted a garden party at the Alberta Legislature on June 2, 2012. The free event featured live performances by talented Albertans and Canadians, monarchythemed tours and children’s games.

In Canada’s constitutional monarchy the Crown has certain ceremonial and constitutional responsibilities.

The Crown is the sovereign authority and an integral part of the legislative, executive and judicial powers, which are exercised by elected federal and provincial governments.

Local political profiles Camrose resident and rural advocate Wyatt Tanton seeks NDP nomination Moush John Staff Reporter

Camrose resident and rural Alberta advocate, Wyatt Tanton will be looking forward to represent NDP for the Camrose Constituency in the provincial election next year.

As a part of the education system, Tanton has been a teaching assistant for a while. He is also a student of finance and an experienced political campaigner, and is excited for Camrose to experience a “hotly-contested nomination.”

Tanton is a staunch believer in advocating for rural Alberta, with a focus on ensuring that rural voices are not muzzled on issues that disproportionately affect them.

“When I go to work in schools in our constituency today, I can’t help but see the same problems facing our education system that I saw when I was a student in Camrose myself during the Klein era,” said Tanton. “Classroom sizes are ballooning, staff are burning out, and students are the ones paying the price when the government implements un-

justifiable sweeping cuts, fires tens of thousands of essential support staff, and continues pushing forward a curriculum so outdated and out-of-touch that it would’ve made Ernest Manning pause in the ‘60s.

“We need a strong voice for our constituency in Edmonton, and a government that’s willing to listen to them – and I want to be that strong voice for Camrose when we elect Rachel Notley and the Alberta NDP to a strong mandate in 2023.”

According to him, one of the biggest issues in the rural-urban divide in education is that so many decisions regarding funding and outcomes are made as though rural and urban schools are fundamentally similar, when the reality is that they aren’t. He believes that the future of Alberta is one where people stop pitting urban and rural against each other and focus on fighting for a better Alberta together.

“Schools in rural areas need more funding per student because a school has a certain number of fixed costs that can’t be avoided if you want to run it properly, and with lower population

density you’ll inevitably end up spending a higher cost per student to meet the same outcomes as urban areas.”

Since running in the municipal election last year, Tanton has spent a lot of time considering how best to continue fighting for the causes that are important to him, such as affordable housing, cost of living, accessibility, rural broadband, and more.

“When it came down to it, the deciding factor was Jason Kenney and the UCP’s disdain for LGBTQ+ Albertans.

As a gay man myself, it was a huge victory when the NDP paved the path for safer schools and Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs), and a particularly devastating loss when the UCP rolled those essential protections back.

“We need a government fighting for a future that includes us all, not a government fighting for a past that privileged the few at the expense of the many.”

Born and raised in Camrose, this community has been a home base for Wyatt even as he has travelled for work and education opportunities in Australia, Montreal, and Vancouver.

“I never lost sight of the fact that I would eventually come back to Camrose and fight for a better tomorrow.

When the pandemic hit and I saw the UCP’s response, I realized that a better tomorrow doesn’t come unless we start fighting for it today – and with Rachel Notley and the Alberta NDP, that better tomorrow is just over the horizon.”

Tanton lives in the City of Camrose, and is pursuing his Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Finance through Athabasca University.

Third NDP candidate Bruneau seeking to represent Camrose Moush John Staff Reporter

Camrose resident Richard Bruneau is seeking NDP nomination. A local business owner and farmer, Bruneau is also a former Canadian Foreign Services Officer.

Bruneau stated that it’s his desire to serve his community and province better, which has led to this decision.

“Rural communities need the government to understand their reality and have a forward-looking vision for innovation. Basic services are a foundation for this, such as schools, health care and emergency services, all of which have suffered under the UCP. “Rural-focused higher education is also key, such as the nursing and physical therapy programs at the Augustana campus that were cut by the UCP; sustainability also requires leadership on environmental protection and climate change, and there are ways to address those issues that strengthen our economy and ways of life.”

According to Bruneau, the UCP government has been disastrous for Alberta. “They have been disastrous for not only the province, but for small businesses, for farmers, for schools and universities, health care, the environment – the list goes on. I believe Camrose and all our communities deserve better, and we have had enough.

“I am ready to fight for principled, forward-looking leadership with Rachel Notley, and to build momentum for the NDP to win this riding.”

He said that his priorities within the NDP platform are supporting sustainable rural communities; rebuilding public education and health care; and building better relationships between government and indigenous people, people of colour, and LGBTQ2S+ communities.

“As a father of a five-year old who is starting Kindergarten this fall, I am very worried by the curriculum being pushed by the UCP; it has been developed in a completely flawed process and is inappropriate for our children.

“Privatization seems to be Kenney’s approach to both health care and education, which amounts to a wealth transfer from our communities and workers to wealthy owners and shareholders often outside the province.

When hospital support staff have to reapply for their jobs through a private company at a lower wage, our communities lose!”

Bruneau said that it’s his belief the UCP government has dragged its feet in their efforts towards reconciliation with indigenous peoples and has walked back protections for LGBTQ2S+ students, and has failed to support important efforts against hate crimes and racism in the province, such as cutting the Human Rights Education and Multiculturalism Fund.

“As a member of the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA), I know firsthand how the UCP has damaged relations with indigenous groups,” he noted. “The NDP will do better – for example, by restarting the negotiation process with the

MNA on a Métis consultation policy.

The UCP has also targeted other vulnerable groups.

“The prime example of this was deindexing AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped) from inflation, despite Canada experiencing its highest inflation in 30 years.”

Bruneau added that the UCP has also made massive, destructive cuts to higher education in Alberta, with the U of A having their government funding cut by over 25 per cent.

“This has pushed more costs onto students in the form of higher tuition, which will continue to rise in 2022. The UCP also cut the Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP) that gave students important income and experience.”

Bruneau said that as a farmer, he will ensure that rural interests are represented in the NDP caucus, and that the government really listens to farmers and landowners in decisions that affect them.

“I think the largest difference between the parties comes down to values,” he added. “The NDP believes in caring for each other and working together for a future in which all Albertans prosper.

Alberta communities have a long history of fierce independence combined with an openness to cooperation and helping our neighbours.

“This ethos can bring us together as a province, and requires an approach to governance that prioritizes listening to Albertans and broad involvement in decision making. The NDP has this ap-

proach, and it is my approach as well.”

Bruneau grew up in Camrose, and now lives on a farm near Kingman with his wife, Kierstin Heiberg, and their daughter, raising about 175 cow-calf pairs. A former Canadian diplomat and international development worker, he has lived in eight countries and speaks four languages. Bruneau is also the owner of a book store and board game café in downtown Camrose.

“My unique background has given me a deep toolbox of skills and experience for community building, policy research, advocacy, and servant leadership,” he said.

“I am proud to be both rooted and progressive. We can celebrate and strengthen our rural ways of life while being innovative and ensuring Alberta’s place in the future.”

Finance minister addresses rural issues in budget 2020 Patricia Harcourt Staff Reporter

Rural Alberta and the 2022 provincial budget was the subject for a media session with Finance Minister Vic Toews on Monday, February 28.

Toews cited higher energy prices leading to economic growth and diversification. He also credited the drop in the business tax rate from 12 per cent to eight per cent as another reason for this positive trend across the province.

The result is that businesses “are pouring into the province,” he said, including a new airline, agri-food manufacturers, petro chemical investment, and film industry and financial services sectors. Toews said that “major technical companies are creating thousands of jobs.”

He said that the increase in fiscal capacity is the result of more revenues for the province based on this growth and diversification.

And he credited his government for holding operational spending flat, despite increases in pandemic and health care spending increases.

The province now has a $500 million surplus and a balanced budget for the next three years. “So we don’t download fiscal problems to the next government,” he said.

Investments in rural Alberta include a major issue for rural Alberta; retaining and keeping doctors and nurses. “I’m from rural Alberta,” he said, adding he has experienced a shortage of health staff “from time to time.”

He said $1.8 billion over three years would go towards a fiscal plan to recruit 60 physicians “to move out to the most under-served regions of the province.”

Also, $22.5 million will go towards the attraction and retention of nurse for rural Alberta, along with $45 million for revitalization of rural health care facilities.

An extra $64 million is going towards emergency services in the province. “I believe these are a number of key initiatives that will increase capacity in rural Alberta,” he said.

However, the drop in Municipal Sustainability Funding capital and operating funds over the next two years, followed by MSI’s replacement was not one of the positive initiatives mentioned by the minister.

Toews did not address the potential negative impact this might have on rural infrastructure, which rural municipalities have relied on MSI funding to help cover.

Toews said the government is keeping MSI funding in place for the next two years, “at a time when municipalities can get work done very effectively,” calling it “an opportunity to build projects for 80-90 cents on the dollar.”

He owned that this funding would be reduced over those two years, before rising to $22 million in what he called “the out years.”

“We will be turning funding down in the ‘back end,” of the MSI, he said, noting that “municipalities were informed of this.”

Toews said that, as the government turns down the funding amount, he expects the private sector to pick up and “flood into the province.”

“I don’t want to displace private sector funding,” he said, explaining he was “turning government funding down as private funding comes.” After that, he plans to “raise government funding to be at a sustainable level.”

Other rural economy initiatives include increasing the capacity in the truck industry by hiring 1,000

more drivers under the Work Alberta program.

“In the rural economy it’s critically important to transfer our goods,” he said, And a total of $1 billion will be invested in rural broadband, which he called “critical in rural Alberta for connectivity.”

Rural crime funding will be increased to boost enforcement and capacity, he said.

“I have been a victim of rural crime and I appreciate the challenge of the issue,” said Toews.

He noted that many people in rural areas see the catching of suspects as a “revolving door” where the person is released to carry on with their crimes.

“So 50 prosecutors are being added to help deal with case loads as more criminals are caught and processed in the criminal justice system.”

More funding has also gone into the Rural Inte-

grated Defence Response Program, he said, and officers from Alberta Fish and Wildlife have been enabled to respond to a rural crime incident.

Attracting people to move to smaller communities will be helped by investing in 14 additional schools, “many in rural Alberta,” he said.

“It’s critically important for families in rural Alberta to have a first-class education.”

He added: “The viability of rural Alberta is very important…. There needs to be opportunities for individuals and families to pursue a career, start a business,” as well as the need for “good roads and infrastructure.”

“Budget 2022 is a turning point for the province,” he said, “and reflects energy, strength and a more diversified economy.”

Lovely motion leads to investment in expanding rural veterinarian program

Leslie Cholowsky Editor Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely brought forward Motion 524 last November, which stated: “Be it resolved that the Legislative Assembly urge the Government to recognize the important work of rural veterinarians and explore ways to increase the number of veterinarians serving rural communities.”

Last week Finance Minister Travis Toews tabled a new budget with $59 million allocated to expand the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinarian Medicine (UCVM), a big win for Lovely, and for rural Alberta, she says.

“I want to thank the government for taking quick action to address the shortage of veterinarians,” said Lovely in response to the news.

Lovely says there are presently 864 veterinarian vacancies across Alberta, 17 per cent, with Rural Alberta

feeling the brunt of that shortage.

She says the University of Calgary, the only facility in the province that trains veterinarians, accepts only 50 students per-year. “The school also faces competition from students in BC as British Columbia doesn’t have a veterinary medicine school.

“The investment in the UCVM by the Alberta government will be over three years to double the amount of students it can admit to the program.

“Having more students graduate from the program is a great step in addressing the shortage,” says Lovely.

She adds, “People have asked how an MLA can help influence government policy. This is an example of how an issue was brought to my attention then an ask made to the Minister, not just in our riding but for all of rural Alberta. As an experienced MLA, I knew the steps that needed to be taken and am thrilled to see the results.”

OBITUARIES Marilyn Elaine Thomas (nee Derr)

January 14, 1946 – March 9, 2022 Marilyn Elaine Thomas was a caring daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.

She passed away suddenly on March 9, 2022, at the age of 76.

She was born to Eileen and Erhardt Derr, on January 14, 1946, at the Calgary General Hospital, and grew up on a farm southeast of Acme, Alberta.

After graduating from the Calgary General Hospital’s Nursing Program, she worked in the communities around Alliance, Alberta, and enjoyed farming and gardening east of Alliance where she lived with her husband Robert (Harvey) Thomas and later welcomed their son Wayne.

Marilyn was a loyal member of the Alliance

United Church and United Church Women’s group (UCW) and was a skilled organ and piano player in the congregation.

She enjoyed coordinating vacation bible school, activities for children and traveling to United Church events.

In 2018, she moved to Calgary to be closer to her family.

Marilyn’s family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Sage Hill Retirement Residence and Wentworth Manor for the excellent care they provided over the past four

Camrose Flying Club and Iron Creek Flying Club are dedicated to encouraging youth interest in aviation and technology - Alberta's future generations of aviators and technologists.

With proceeds from last summer's Airshow, organizers were pleased to present a donation to 644 Camrose Rotary Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron. In conjunction with the Airshow, our local Cadets (along Stettler/Coronation) had the opportunity to meaningfully connect with key RCAF personnel.

Last February, CF-18 Demo Pilot, Captain Dan Deluce delivered a great Zoom

briefing on his career, the fighter force, and took some great questions from Cadets.

This Fall, they had the opportunity to interact in a Zoom presentation with new Snowbird 7 Outer Left Wing: Capt. Dominic Appolloni. On another occasion, the Cadets were treated to a Q & A with former Snowbirds Team Lead and CO, Lt. Col (ret) Rob "Scratch" Mitchell, actor, filmmaker, film pilot and Airshow pilot.

Until only a few weeks ago, the Cadet program across the country was required to take their programming online.

RCMP warn of idling risks Last month, RCMP officers conducted Operation Cold Start patrols in conjunction with police forces across Alberta. In an effort to educate the community about preventing vehicle theft, members would look for unattended, idling vehicles and determine if the keys were in the ignition.

“Our goal was to educate residents and work with them to reduce vehicle thefts, ultimately making it tougher on would be thieves, as often vehicle thefts are a crime of opportunity,” said Constable Cheri-Lee Smith of the Leduc RCMP. Throughout the Cold Start patrols, Leduc officers found 58 unlocked, idling vehicles with the keys in the ignition.

When possible, an officer would speak to the vehicle owner to provide vehicle theft prevention tips.

“Throughout Operation Cold Start, we used criminal analysis and hot spot targeting to assist us in patrolling areas that were known to have recently been targeted for crime,” said Inspector Jeff McBeth.

In January, Leduc RCMP experienced an increase of 36 per cent in reports of motor vehicle theft than in January of 2021. Approximately 25 per cent of all stolen vehicles in Alberta are stolen while idling, and increases are usually tied to cold snaps.
