SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE підтримки для України BY JOHN MATHER Across Lamont County, and throughout Canada, support for beleaguered Ukraine has been strong. But it may be strongest in the “Cradle of Ukrainian Settlement in Canada.” On Feb 26, Bruderheim showed its support for Ukraine when Mayor Karl Hauch accompanied by Fort Saskatchewan Vegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong Homeniuk raised a Ukrainian flag outside the town office. “There’s no formal program today,” he said to a small crowd gathered to witness the act of solidarity. “We view today as a chance to come together to stand with the people of Ukraine and members of the Ukrainian community, many who have friends and family still in Ukraine.” He then passed the microphone to Homeniuk who offered a prayer for the country. “We pray so fervently that you (Holy Father) will protect each soldier and civilian in Ukraine and restore peace, calm and order.” Then, as the flag slowly raised, the Ukrainian national anthem was played. Mundare Councillor Glen Rozumniak, whose mother came to Alberta from Ukraine, is shocked by the events taking place. “This shouldn’t be happening in this day and age,” he said, he expects he still has relatives living in the Kyiv area of Ukraine, but long ago lost track of them. “It shouldn’t be happening to the children. They shouldn’t be seeing any of this happening, and further it shouldn’t be happening to them.” He added he hasn't participated in any of the protests taking place across

The rouble has dropped and there’s a run on the banks. He’s hurting his own people.” Late on Feb. 28, Lamont County issued a statement on the ongoing crisis. “We have seen the Ivano-Frankivsk area and our twin community of Nebyliv, are experiencing bombing/missile attacks,” read the statement. “We are very concerned for our twinning partners, and all Ukrainian people in the conflict region and across the world; we are supportive of the humanitarian efforts led by former Premier Stelmach, and Premier Kenney’s announcement of $1M support for humanitarian aid from the Province.” Reeve David Diduck expressed the County’s concern for all Ukrainians and its twinning partner Nebyliv, during this difficult time. “We wish for a swift and peaceful resolution to this war,” Reeve Diduck said. Further, he has provided his support publicly on the Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Alberta (UCCAb) website. Please visit the UCCAb website to offer additional humanitarian support (www.uccab.ca). In Mundare the owners of Stawnichy Meat Processing offered up their support in a Facebook post. “Our hearts and minds go out to the nation of Ukraine,” it read. “Like many, our family left Europe in search of prosperity and a better life.
