Sedgewick Rally organizers pivot to accept both quads and snowmobiles after week of warm weather A week of warm weather decimated the snow pack for the Sedgewick Ag. Society’s weekend Snowmobile Rally, rescheduled for Sunday, March 2, so organizers changed it to a sled or quad rally, and got a little of both, with around 40 entrants turning out to have some fun.

Killam RCMP Detachment Report for the period of Friday, Feb. 21 to Thursday, Feb. 27 Saturday, Feb. 22 A bar fight was reported in Forestburg. Members attended. One Subject had left and the other was spoken to. Mutual fight. No charges to be laid.

A suspicious person was reported at Killam Krossing. An unwanted male was approaching customers asking for money. The Subject ran off once he was told the Police were called. Member located the Subject and a ride was arranged.

Sunday, Feb. 23 An abandoned vehicle was reported at the Killam car wash. Two Subjects were seen taking things out of the vehicle and left in another vehicle with no licence plate.

Members ran the VIN off of the vehicle. Vehicle not stolen but registration was expired. Members left messages for the Registered Owner. Vehicle to be towed.

Tuesday, Feb. 25 A report was made of three vehicles parked in Heisler for a month without moving. Members attended. All vehicles were registered and the Owners resided in Heisler. Members contacted the Registered Owners in regards to the vehicles.

Members were called out to assist Fire with a semi on fire in the parking lot of Subway. Fire department attended and put out the fire. Tow was arranged to remove the vehicle.

Thursday, Feb. 27 A suspicious vehicle was reported dumping wire casings and car parts on the side of the road. Complainant stopped and told the two Subjects to pick up the garbage, which they did. Member was not in a position to intercept the vehicle.

This weekend the Sedgewick Sabres played their first semi-final games against the Stettler Imperials, with a win at home on Friday, followed by an overtime loss on Saturday in Stettler.

On Friday the Imperials jumped on the scoreboard first, scoring the only two goals in the first period to take a 20 lead.

Clay Lang scored a short-handed goal for the Sabres in the second period, from Carter Ortman and Keaton Holinaty, to make it 2-1 heading into the final period.

Quinn Johnson tied things up with a goal from Lang and Holinaty, then Holinaty scored a late one from Ortman and Dalton Zemanek on a power play to go head 3-2.

The match moved to Stettler the next night.

Things started off similarly, with the Imperials getting ahead by two goals,

but Holinaty continued his streak, scoring from Chase Schatschneider and Johnson to make it 2-1 going into the second period.

Jesse Reeds scored the tying goal, from Spencer McClements, then Trevor Bromby scored late in the period, from Kyle Sanders and Ryan Guhle to make it 3-2 heading into the final period.

Stettler scored midway through the period to tie it 3-3, forcing an overtime period.

Stettler scored the overtime goal to tie the series at one win each.

The battle will continue back in Sedgewick this Friday, with an 8:30 start for Game 3, then it’ll be back to Stettler on Saturday night. Game five, if necessary, will be back in Sedgewick on Tuesday, March 11.

The Provost/Oyen series is also tied at one, with a big 6-5 overtime win for Oyen in the first game last Friday, and an 8-0 win for Provost on Sunday. That series will continue in Provost this Friday for Game 3.

Trudeau, Smith, Poillievre respond to US tariffs coming into effect Leslie Cholowsky Editor

American President Donald Trump said Monday, March 3, that 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods would take effect 12:01 a.m.

Tuesday, March 4.

Trump said, “No room left for Mexico or for Canada,” during a press conference from the White House on Monday.

Canadian energy imports will be subject to a 10 per cent tariff, as Trump originally promised back at the start of February.

The tariffs were supposed to go into effect Feb. 4, but were deferred after Canadian and Mexican officials lobbied for more time to address the US’s concerns.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed Canadians, Americans, and Trump directly on Tuesday morning, with a very stern message.

“Today the United States launched a trade war with Canada, their closest partner and ally; their closest friend. At the same time they are talking positively about working with Russia, appearing Vladimir Putin, a lying, murderous dictator. Make that make sense.

“We will not back down from a fight, not when our country and the wellbeing of everyone in it is at stake.

“At the moment, the US tariffs came into effect in the early hours of this morning, and so did the Canadian response.

“Canada will be implementing 25 per cent tariffs against $155 billion dollars worth of American goods. Starting with tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods immediately, and tariffs on the remaining $125 billion in 21 days time.

“We will also be challenging these illegal actions by filing dispute resolution claims at the world trade organization.

“In the meantime our tariffs will remain in place until the US tariffs are withdrawn, and not a moment sooner.”

Trudeau took a minute to address the American people directly, saying “We don’t want this, as a friend, or ally.

We don’t want to see you hurt either, but your government has chosen to do this to you.”

He talked about market dips and American jobs at risk and how everyday items will see price raises as a result of the tariffs.

Trudeau then directed his remarks directly to President Trump: “In the over eight years you and I have worked together, we have done big things. We signed a historic deal that created record jobs and growth in both of our countries. We have done big things together on a world stage, as

Put Canada First and Defend!

After nine years, the NDP-Liberals have weakened our military and as a result Canada has lost the respect of our allies. Our national safety and security requires we rebuild our military and assert control in our North. Plus, with the looming threat of substantial tariffs from the USA, our relationship with our closest neighbour has been put to the test, and it’s more evident now than it ever has been Canada needs to be able to show that we can defend ourselves.

Conservatives have started laying out a plan to put Canada First and to rebuild our military.

Pierre Poilievre’s approach is to ensure our military has the resources and equipment they need, and once again, restore pride, honour, strength, and respect in Canada’s armed forces. This includes rejecting “woke" and to rebuild a warrior culture.

We need to increase military spending to 2% of our GDP, which is desperately needed. And, unlike the Liberals, we know we need real investment, and not just change the way we calculate the number. Canada has been falling short of this commitment, and a correction is long overdue.

Today, Canada is facing growing threats from all directions, but our Arctic is especially at risk with growing geopolitical threats. Russia and China, especially, seem to be eyeing the potential in the Arctic for shipping routes, resources, and proximity to major players in the global market.

To take back control of the Arctic, Conservatives have outlined a commitment to: • Double the size of the 1st Patrol Group of the Canadian Rangers from 2,000 to 4,000 Rangers.

• Acquire two additional polar icebreakers for the Royal Canadian Navy as well as deliver the two polar icebreakers the Seaspan and Davie shipyards are currently building for the Coast Guard by 2029, versus the Liberals’ unknown timeline.

• Build at least one permanent Arctic military base within two years: CFB Iqaluit, Canada’s first permanent Arctic military base since the Cold War. Iqaluit already has a Forward Operating Location as well as a functional airport and seaport which can accommodate military operations and can be expanded. The base would be able to host a full RCAF wing to launch and land new F-35 fighter jets. These jets would deter, intercept, and destroy threats. Expansion would also enable Poseidon P-8s aircraft to carry out search and rescue, anti-submarine warfare and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) work.

The base would also fuel local economic development in Iqaluit with better runways, energy systems, transportation and infrastructure.

Protecting the North is one step. Our military is critical to the safety, strength, and prosperity of all of Canada. This includes ensuring Camp Wainwright has what it needs, which I have the honour of representing here in Battle River—Crowfoot. Camp Wainwright is a world leader in training soldiers for the battle field, and I will continue to make the case for how important this base is for our military’s future.

Inline with Pierre Poilievre’s dollar for dollar commitment, which would require a dollar of savings for each new dollar spent, the funds to pay for this military commitment would come from cutting foreign aid. Aid which, under the Liberals, has gone to dictators, terrorists, and global bureaucracies.

To those who are serving now and have served in the past, thank you. Canadians owe a debt of gratitude to those who have spent their lives fighting for this great nation and for peace around the world. We owe it to them, and our future, to get it right.

Canada first. Canada last. Canada always. As your representative in Canada’s Parliament, I will continue to work for this and a strong future for Battle River—Crowfoot and all of Canada.

Quebec in the catbird seat To the Editor; Much as Lord Thomas Stanley did at the Battle of Bosworth (AD1485), Quebec, too, awaits a favourable tide of battle viz-a-viz Canada and the United States of America Tariff War (AD2025), prior to holding yet another referendum on separating from Canada.

The Parti Quebecois has promised such an action but cunningly awaits the aforementioned outcome to determine which winner best suits their purpose.

With fracture lines widening in Western Canada, and U.S. President Trump casting covetous glance northward, Quebec believes they now occupy the catbird seat. Should they call for a separation ballot, that threat would likely be met with U.S. enthusiasm and support, thus ensuring probable victory, which would then force Canada, to forestall such action, into giving Quebec its hallowed, long sought 'Special Status' grail in desperate attempt to keep the country whole.

Such capitulation would of course be the signal for Western Canada to hurriedly align their interests with a welcoming southern neighbour.

Thus isolated, the Yukon and Northern Territories would, of necessity, integrate with Alaska; B.C. with Washington State; Eastern Canada/Newfoundland with whomever offered best conditions for their survival.

The result would see the inevitable disintegration of the Nation. With not a shot fired. Such rupture would mean nothing to Quebec as they have always, from inception, thought and largely acted as an independent, insular country; 'Je me Souviens' is not without meaning.

Sound far-fetched? Not really. Canada is already sliding slowly toward irrelevance as a country; witness its treatment at recent World forums and Trudeau's witless, empty braying against the Trump administration's serious demand to tighten the shared border or face the consequences of stiff tariffs.

Too, Provincial divisions are widening, valuable territory, with full approval of a cowardly Supreme Court, is being ceded to grievous mongers peddling dubious 'historical rights' claims, and a leaderless, weak central government has left the country militarily defenseless. Plus, with an ever-growing debt of $1.250 Trillion (approx. $30K per person), Canada is again teetering at the edge of bankruptcy.

Little wonder the wolf at the southern door; he senses distress and means to make an easy meal of it. And Quebec aims to set the table.

Whether this can be turned around is questionable. The (likely) incoming Conservative Party is untested, its members largely unknown, and the swollen (largely Liberal) bureaucracy has little interest outside its own self-serve.

And all the vapid flag waving, or childish booing of National anthems by an ill-informed, torpid citizenry concerned more with coloured sidewalks and 'safe' drug sites, will do little to nothing to halt, or even slow, this slide to Oceania. Alarm bells are ringing. Seemingly into a void.

The Palace Theater was excited to announce their projector had been fixed

after they had previously announced on Feb. 21 it had broken and there wouldn't be any movies playing that weekend.

They were back up and running (the following weekend) this past weekend and showing Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Our local library is also

making news, along with their weekly crafts and crafty evening activities they are welcoming John Dunn this next weekend.

He is presenting his journey in which he will show pictures, videos, and share stories from his 8000 km adventure from

Tofino to the Northern tip of Canada.

The Provincial Government announced that is has partnered with the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation to build two state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization labs at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Central.

That project is expected to be complete by 2031, but in the interim, Budget 2025 includes $3 million in startup funding and ongoing funding to cover operationals costs for an interim cardiac catheterization lab.

This is in response, the province says in its announcement Monday, to “the urgent need for cardiac services for the 450,000 Albertans from Red Deer and surrounding rural communities.”

A cardiac catheterization lab is a dedicated space where specialized teams can carry out diagnostic tests that examine and evaluate heart function to aid in the diagnosis of cardiac health concerns and treatment of coronary artery disease.

The lab will be equipped with specialized imaging equipment to allow for cardiac procedures primarily including ablation, angiogram and angioplasty.

Faith Column: ‘But’ is a powerful word

But God! Has anyone ever apologized for something like this, “I am sorry for this or that….but…?”

When I was a child my father would not allow me to use the word “but” when I was apologizing.

“But” is a powerful word, it will often disqualify whatever precedes it. Someone might say, “I would go out for lunch… But… I am busy.”, or “I would hand in my homework… but… I didn’t

have time to do it.”

Here is one I often heard as a young adolescent, “I would be your girlfriend…. but …

I like you only as a friend.”

These are all negative uses of the word. In the Bible there are great uses of the words “But.” Times when things were going bad or in a hard direction, and then suddenly, “But God!” One such incident is in Romans and it reads, “Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous per-

son, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

(Romans 5:7-9).

Think about this for a second; we have all sinned. That sin deserves a punishment, But GOD loved us so much that while we were sinners, he died for us. If we just believe, ask forgiveness for our sins, and give our lives to God, that punishment is

taken away. Wow! These next few weeks I will be sharing more

“But God…” moments in the Bible.

Local girls bring home gymnastic medals from meet in Florida The Wainwright Gymnastics Club hit up sunny Florida for their sixth International Travel Meet on Feb. 14-16 The Magical Classic, hosted by Browns Gymnastics, was held in the Orlando World Centre Marriott.

This meet had over 2,700 gymnasts from around the world attending.

This was the Wainwright club’s biggest team to date to take on this adventure, with 15 gymnasts attending and four coaches. This type of meet is easily four times the size of a meet they would attend in Alberta.

They run four gyms at the same time

with two sets of equipment in each one.

This is a great opportunity for these gymnasts to get to experience a competition of this magnitude.

Local gymnasts Lexianna and Naveena Schmidt, and Aurora Burden had a great competition - all winning multiple medals.

Following the meet, many families enjoyed the sunshine and a little vacation before heading home.

Next up for the club team is back to training to finish off many more competitions around Alberta over the next few months.

Snowmobile rally twice plagued by weather issues Leslie Cholowsky Editor

For this year’s planners of the Sedgewick Cutter Rally and Family Day Snowmobile Rally, it was like something out of a bad fairy tale. First extreme wind chills forced organizers to cancel the Cutter Rally and postpone the snowmobile rally.

Then, when area snowmobile owners could finally enjoy time out in the field, unseasonably warm weather melted the snow dramatically over the past few weeks.

Intrepid sledders and quad owners still turned out Sunday, March 2 to the rescheduled snowmobile/quad rally at the Wild Rose Co-op Recreation Centre.

Organizer Andrew Hampshire says that about 40 riders showed up, and purchased 87 hands. “Those who went out had a good time. We had a nice hot dog stop at Cross Country Sales, too.”

Well hello folks. How are you all faring with this lovely warm weather, that is causing us no end of safety issues?

With the warmer temperatures the snow is melting for part of the day and causing puddles of water that is turning to sheer ice at night. It is getting bloody dangerous.

If you have any mobility issues or need a walker, a cane, or some sort of support equipment, your life becomes a nightmare. It is frightening.

My friend uses a cane on occasion and she was so pleased that the Fresh Market employee helped her carry out her gro-

ceries and assisted her.

That is small-town courtesy at its best. Just try to get into your parked car on these icy surfaces. You lift your right leg and place it safely under the steering wheel and as you try to lift your left leg, it slides away out towards the street. Now it seems as if you are doing the splits.

Lordie Lord, you hang onto the steering wheel for dear life and lean into the car as you spew out words that are praising the Lord! Finally both legs are under the wheel and you feel an uncomfortable ache in that poor old crotch. You were not made for splits and you are so relieved you are safe.

Now to get home and hope your driveway is not a sheet of ice. If you have a cell phone you might want to call your man and ask him to help you bring groceries in

when you get home.

Now for some Motrin tablets and a stiff coffee or maybe even a wee drink to calm your nerves. Welcome to Spring!

On Sunday afternoon a large group of ladies were treated to a Charcuterie course organized by Trisha Granger. It was held at our Town Hall and our teacher was Hardisty's own Shanese Macfadyen. She is a Journeyman Chef and she was assisted by her mom, Shirley Macfadyen.

Charcuterie is a french word for cooked meats and the meats are usually served as an appetizer with a variety of cheeses.

The taste of the meat and cheese is often enhanced by smoking these items. The students were able to taste 10 kinds of cheeses while we received a running commentary about what they pair best with.

There were many comments and ooh's and ahh's as people's taste buds were activated.

Shanese was very knowledgeable and had a good sense of humour when questions were asked.

Next we were asked to try different smoked meats, mostly salamis, and pair them with our favourite cheeses. After the learning session we were able to add fruits and pickled items and crackers to enhance the appearance of our charcuterie display.

The students all received a charcuterie board created by Dean Fossum. We all decorated it and were able to take it home, as a gift from the course. That was so generous.

There was such a variety of artistic talents at the course and in the end your imagination had no limits. This course just opened the doors for

your future artistic entertainment. Thank you Shanese, you were a great teacher.

When we had a break at the above course, I took a walk to the other end of the Town Hall, where a group was learning how to manufacture felt cowboy hats.

This had been so popular that they offered a second session.

Jace Thorsteinson was the teacher, so I asked for a quick summary of the hat creation process. He laughed and said there is quite a bit of work but basically you need to heat the felt, add moisture, and put the felt on a head form and add pressure.

Once you have the head shape there is quite a bit of detail work and shaping. He said if you take proper care of the cowboy hats they last a long time. I know there is more to hats than this lit-

tle tidbit of info but it gives you an idea what it entails.

Thanks again to Trisha Granger for bringing this course to Hardisty for the second time.

The Hardisty Library enjoyed having some of the Willow Tree students visiting us on Friday. I brought a Holstein puppet for the kids and we just had fun interacting and making them laugh and tell me stories.

They are all so unique and amazing little people. Thank you to the teacher for accompanying them to the library and our librarian, Heidi for organizing the visits.

The library is planning to have some Easter cookie decorating again so watch for posts please.

With the recent announcement of Peavey Mart closing, a local business is trying to step up to fill the gap.

Killam Home Hardware is already known for its excellent customer service.

They are planning on expanding their Farm and Agricultural section. They offered their customers to have some input. For one, it will save you a trip to Camrose and secondly, it will help support a local business that's already very community minded.

The Lougheed Library is adding a few fun events to their calendar. Family game night on Wednesdays for one. Now they have added ‘The Hook and Needle Society.’ It doesn't matter if you are new and

wanting to learn or a seasoned crafter. Come out and join the fun!

The Sedgewick Library’s Annual General Meeting is coming up this month.

New members are always welcome. Check out their ad in this week’s Classified, an reach out to Barb for more information.

The Killam Cyclones are gearing up for another swim season and are running a registration night mid March. The season runs from May to August, and they welcome anyone over the age of four. Join the swim family!

School council for CHSPS is running an online auction in April. If you have anything you'd like to donate, please reach out.

School Council pays for a lot of things to enhance the student's school experience. As you all know the school budget doesn't cover it all. So for example the costs for all school field trips, ski trips, and so on are covered by the parent

association.

The school also has to replace their entire collection of Chromebooks as the current ones have reached their end of lifespan. You can donate directly to the school council. Your support is appreciated by our young learners and parents.

They are still looking for someone to fill the secretary position as well.

It was a beautiful day on Sunday to participate in the quad and snowmobile rally in Sedgewick. Thanks to everyone behind the scenes when putting on these community events. I hope you had a chance to soak up some sun this weekend.

End of season for Killam Jr. B Wheat Kings Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Killam Jr. B Wheat Kings ended their playoff run on Sunday, Feb. 23 in Lloydminster with a tough 7-4 loss against the Lloydminster Bandits.

The Wheat Kings and Bandits were tied at one win each going into backto-back home games for the Wheaties, starting Wednesday, Feb. 19.

Wednesday’s game saw the Bandits take a 30 lead after the first period. In the second period, Cade Schatschneider scored a powerplay goal from Trey Forster and Jordan Gagnon to put Killam on the scoreboard.

Two minutes later, Brady Parchoma scored, from Blake Sitler and Kyler Bergseth, also on a powerplay, to make it 3-2, before the Bandits dropped another to make it 4-2.

The Wheat Kings fought back hard in the third period, with Gagnon scoring a shorthanded goal to make it 43.

Aidan Borgel forced overtime with a last-seconds goal, from Carter Hogman and Carson Ler-

oux, to tie it up 4-4.

A goal by the Bandits at the 12-minute mark of overtime gave the Bandits the win. Shots were 45-36 Lloydminster; Ryan Stepanick got the loss in goal.

On Friday, Feb. 22, the Bandits were back in Killam, looking for blood.

The Bandits got on the scoreboard first, but then Chance Reum scored on a powerplay to tie things up.

Late in the period, the Bandits scored their second, to make it 2-1 heading into period two.

The Bandits scored three in the second period, including a shorthanded goal, to pull ahead 5-1. A powerplay goal in the third period put the final at 6-1 Lloyd, giving them a 3-1 lead in the series.

Shots were 49-34 Lloyd; Stepanick took the loss in goal.

The Wheat Kings travelled to Lloydminster on Sunday, Feb. 23 for game five, looking for a win to stay in the series.

The Bandits opened the scoring in the first minute of the game, but it was just a minute later when Chase Rombough tied things up, from Cade

Gagnon scored his second of the night, unassisted, early in the third, to make it 4-3, but then Lloyminster scored on a powerplay goal to make it 5-3, then scored another to go ahead 6-3.

Hogman scored a short-handed goal, from Keegan McArthur, to make it 6-4, but an empty net goal from Lloydminster in the final seconds made it 7-4.

The Bandits win pushed the Wheat Kings out of the quarter finals, and the Bandits will move on to the semi-finals.

The Lloydminster/Killam matchup was the closest series, with two overtime wins, one for both teams.

In the other two series, the Vermilion Tigers took out the Vegreville Ranges in four straight, and the St. Paul Canadiens beat the Cold Lake Ice in four straight games.

The Wheat Kings fought hard in an entertaining and close series, and after Sunday’s loss, thanked their loyal fan base for their support throughout the season.

Curtain Call Theatre carried on their 30-plus years of tradition of entertaining local audiences this past weekend, opening their newest production, ‘Death by Golf.’

Opening night was Friday, Feb. 26, and the cast and crew were in high form after a successful dress rehearsal the evening before.

Director Eugene Gustafson, a great play, and a lot of hard work from the cast and crew led to a successful opening weekend.

In a nutshell, the plot revolves around Grandpa (played by Shannon Blumhagen), a semi-washed

up golfer whose life revolves around the golf course.

His granddaughter Ashley (played by Kara Pearcey) is bringing her new husband Prescott (played by Cole Olesen) for their first visit since marrying. Things start to go awry when a lawyer (played by Nancy Ambler) shows up to try and talk to Grandpa about money, or something... you see, Grandpa’s a bit hard of hearing, and even harder to keep on track.

As the lawyer gives up to try again later, Ashley arrives, excited about showing off her new geneologist husband to her beloved Grandpa.

Things aren’t all that they seem,

though, and a few cracks start to show as Grandpa and Ashley find something in the closet that kicks off a web of lies and intrigue.

As things edge towards danger as the plot unravels, it seems that Grandpa might not be quite as clueless as he seems!

Backed by a solid supporting crew, the Curtain Call’s actors’ antics will have you snorting in laughter from all the little snippets of hilarity amongst the rising tension of the plot.

Touted as, “A lively combination of uproarious comedy and terrifying murder mystery,” Death by Golf, written by Gregg Kreutz, keeps the audience guessing, and laughing, all night long.

When it turns out that there’s not one but two Prescotts, hilarity and intrigue ensue, but they soon find out that one of the Prescotts has murder on his mind!

“The tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump are an unjustifiable economic attack on Canadians and Albertans. They also represent a clear breach of the trade agreement signed by this same U.S. President during his first term. These tariffs will hurt the American people, driving up costs for fuel, food, vehicles, housing and many other products. They will also cost hundreds of thousands of American and Canadian jobs. This policy is both foolish and a failure in every regard.”

She added, “Alberta fully supports the federal response announced today by the Prime Minister. I will be meeting with my cabinet today and tomorrow to discuss Alberta’s response to these illegal tariffs, which we will announce publicly tomorrow.

“Now is the time for us to unite as a province and a country. We must do everything in our collective power to immediately tear down provincial trade barriers and fast-track the construction of dozens of resource projects, from pipelines to LNG facilities to critical minerals projects.

“We must strengthen our trade ties throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas for all our energy, agricultural and manufactured products.

“We also need to drastically increase military spending to ensure we can protect our nation. There is no time to waste on any of these initiatives.”

Federal Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre also addressed the tariffs on Tuesday, urging that Parliament reopen immediately so that a full-bodied plan and federal election can be set in motion.

“President Trump stabbed America’s best friend in the back,” Poilievre declared.

“My message to the President is this: Canada will fight back. We will defend our people and our economy, and we will put Canada first.”

Hughenden was led by Gracie Prokopetz’s hat trick. Julianne Leskow also scored, and Isla Waddell picked up an assist.

Battle River U15 Female Knights dropped a 6-3 playoff game against Lakeland on Saturday at Cold Lake. Scoring for BR were: Brynn Chisan, Brittyn Zentner, and Grace Edwards. Assists went to: Gracie Currier, Dayna

Ruzicka, Abby Galletly, and Lily Nguyen. The teams were to meet on Sunday at Sedgewick.

Battle River U18 Female Knights beat St. Paul 3-1 on Saturday at Sedgewick in playoff action led by Surai Thomson’s two-goal game. Paige Zimmer scored the other goal, while Emma Galletly and Brooklyn Blatz picked up assists. The teams were to play on Sunday at St. Paul.

Hughenden U11 Jets dropped a 10-3 home game to Onion Lake on Saturday. Scoring for Jets were: Jax Piller, Ryder Piller, and Noah Nguyen.

Assists went to Daniel Owuh and Deklan Pentland.

Battle River U11 dropped a 4-1 playoff game against Thorsby on Sunday with Garrett Ruzicka scoring the lone goal

for BR. On Saturday, BR also lost a game against Thorsby 3-1. The BR goal was scored by Ashton Rahmoun, assisted by Wyatt Jackson.

On Saturday, U11 Thunderstars dropped a 7-5 playoff game in Stettler.

Landon Miller scored a hat trick for TS. Other scorers were: Wells Weiss (2g 1a), River Boudreau (1a), Nelson Bendfeld (1a), and Scottie Terway (1a).

On Sunday Thunderstars rebounded for an 8-5 win over Stettler at Forestburg Arena. Both Clyde Cassidy and Landon Miller got hat tricks and four-point games. Other scorers were: Samuel Manning (1g 2a), Nelson Bendfeld (1g 1a), Bentley Booy (1a), Eva Shepherd (1a), Wells Weiss (1a), and Ryatt McCarroll (1a).

On Sunday, Dallas Holte scored twice and Reid Walters added the other. As-

Battle River Pipes and Drums entertaining local seniors Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Battle River Pipes and Drums held their own Robbie Burns Night in Killam on Feb. 1, but members of the band also helped various other groups, like the Camrose Royal Canadian Legion, Edgerton Burns’ Night, and Leduc Burns Supper.

Members Ian Malcolm and David Samm performed for the Bashaw Long Term Care Center for that facility’s

Burns celebration at the end of January, then picking up more band members and travelling to the Bethany Group in Camrose to perform there.

Prior to that Malcolm played his ‘parlor’ pipes, which are quieter pipes for indoor play at the Killam Long Term Care, also doing a talk on Robert Burns, his work, and his impact on the world, followed by a sticky toffee pudding reception.

During that period the Battle River Pipes and Drums also performed in

A celebration of life was held in Red Deer this week for Cliff McDermott, a long

time resident of Alliance.

Cliff’s father, Ray McDermott, bought a 1928 Chev sedan in 1945 to begin the bussing of students from one room country schools to Alliance.

Cliff and his brother Red (Don) started driving school buses when they were attending high school. Cliff drove school bus in Alliance as well as being the elevator agent for Pioneer Grain.

It was in his role as the elevator agent that I got to know him. He was very helpful to Peter when he was starting P and D Trucking as a grain and fertilizer carrier.

Cliff and his wife Carol moved to Red Deer after retirement in 1991. Cliff took up school bus driving again in Red Deer.

Condolences to his wife Carol, daughters Brenda and Barbara, and son Kevin.

I met Wade Black this week. Wade lives just east of town in the former Boisvert house. He is a mechanic working at Coronation and also on the family farm, Maureen and Derald Black’s at Brownfield.

Donna Chalifoux is off to visit her sister, Shirley Cook, in Sherwood Park for a couple of days. Shirley and other family members often came to our Farmer’s Markets.

Karin McCracken had a visit with her sister, Anne Manca when Anne’s son Layne of Vancouver Island was out for a visit. Anne lives in Edmonton.

WI is moving the meeting up one week to be ahead of the Farmer’s Market date.

Cardiac Care Continued from Page 7 The interim cardiac catheterization lab will be located within the existing Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre in a space currently being used as a physician’s lounge.

Preliminary design plans are already in place and construction is expected to begin by fall 2025.

The Red Deer Regional Health Foundation has committed to funding the capital cost of the project, which is expected to be about $22 million.

The first market meal will be their first foray into the supper at the market. Market is March 13 a Thursday evening.

March 8 is International Women’s Day as declared by the United Nations. The Associated Country Women of the World, of which all WI’s are members, will be recognizing it with an online Zoom gathering. If you want to attend, let me know and I will send you the link.

The little house that was Malcom’s has a for sale sign out front. There aren’t many places for sale in Alliance now.

Several folks from Alliance enjoyed the Castor Little Theatre presentation of Steel Magnolias this week. Congratulations to the cast and crew on another well-done production.

When I came home from holidays on Jan. 31, I noticed tire tracks in my yard. I thought it was probably Marlin checking of stuff. Last week when I went into my workshop, I noticed a space where my spare fridge had been. On Thursday I took people down to look at the trailer and found the hot water tank, stove, and fridge missing. Putting two and two together, I deduced that things were stolen on Jan. 31, probably just before I got home. The gas to my house was turned off but nothing was frozen, so it hadn’t been off too long. I hope that the culprits were some of those that the police have arrested recently.

A bit of news from Galahad, Shannon and Doreen Blumhagen have a new grandson.

Anissa and Brock Chilton of Kelowna, BC, are parents to Bobby Glen born Feb. 27, at eight pounds three ounces. Big brother Wesley is pretty excited. Great grandma is Madeline Blumhagen.

By prioritizing the development of an interim cardiac catheterization lab, patients will have access to critical services about three years earlier than expected.

The interim cardiac catheterization lab is expected to be operational in early 2027.

“Developing this lab will allow us to treat more cardiac patients closer to home and support them in their recovery.

“Enhancing our cardiac services will also support our efforts to recruit and retain the talented professionals needed to care for our region’s patients,” says Janice Stewart, Chief Zone Officer, Alberta Health Services Central Zone.

Many people who work in or visited Killam last week got a special surprise.

Whether it was an encouraging post-it note handed to them by a student from Killam Public School, or one left for them to find later, like on a vehicle window, many residents got a very special lift during the day.

“It was absolutely the message I needed today,” said one recipient. Another said, “Thank you for brightening my day!” and “It was very nice seeing that note at the end of my work day on my vehicle.”

OBITUARIES Clifford McDermott

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Clifford McDermott, who departed this life on February 21, 2025, at Three Hills Health Centre. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of

69 years, Carol; daughter Brenda and her children Kelli (Trevor Walline) and their children Katie, Gus and Sophia; Kristin Matier (Trevor Kvale) and her children Austin Pressey (Allison Baird) and Trinity Pressey, and stepchildren Dylan Kvale and Addy Kvale; and Todd Matier. Son Kevin and his children David (Jodi) and their daughter Natalie, and his son Adam McDermott (Camisha) and son Mauricio.
