New rules for passing emergency vehicles changed by province to Sept. 1 Leslie Cholowsky Editor

On Wednesday, March 1, the day that the Province was supposed to start enforcing new rules regarding passing emergency vehicles on the highway, it instead released a notification that “Implementation of the planned roadside worker safety will take place on Sept. 1, following a public education campaign to educate Albertans of the changes.” The Province says over the coming months the Ministry of Transportation and Economic Corridors will partner with industry partners to prepare a twoto three-month education campaign: “So motorists are not surprised on the launch date and won’t receive unexpected tickets for incorrectly passing

roadside workers at higher speeds.” It says the public education campaign will help raise awareness and increase safety for roadside workers across the province before the changes are implemented for the 2023-24 fall/winter driving season. In addition, the Province has announced that the use of flashing blue lights on tow trucks, support vehicles, government contracted snowplows and highway maintenance vehicles has been extended from a one-year pilot to the next five years, to February 2028. “The initial one-year blue light pilot project demonstrated the effectiveness of increasing visibility and safety for Alberta’s roadside workers.”

Daylight Savings Time this weekend Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Brian and Carol Armstrong were finally able to come in on the weekend and claim their prizes as the winners of the 2023 Sweetheartʼs Draw. Brian entered Carolʼs name for the draw, and both were thrilled at the wide array of prizes from all around the region! Brian and Carol are holding wine donated by Lakeview Liquor Store, while sitting in front of all the rest of their prizes, including a gift box from Purple Scissors in Daysland, gift certificates from Daysland Pharmacy, Budding Ideas in Killam, Guardian Drugs in Killam, Wild Rose Co-op, Killam Subway, Killam Stop Spot, Coutts Home Hardware in Forestburg, and from Forestburg IDA and The Source. They also won a two-year subscription to The Community Press, along with a gift basket from Main Street Medley in Alliance filled with goodies!

This Sunday, March 12, at 2 a.m. Albertans will return to the tradition of ‘springing forward’ to Daysland Savings Time; trading an hour of sleep for an hour of daylight. In Alberta’s 2021 referendum, 50.1 per cent of Albertans said “No” to the question: “Do you want Alberta to adopt year-round Daylight Saving Time,

which is summer hours, eliminating the need to change our clocks twice a year?” It may be a safe bet to say that most Albertans expected the question to be directed at doing away with Daylight Savings Time, not permanently adopting it. The start of Daylight savings time is a great time to test or replace the batteries in your smoke alarms, and rotate items in your Emergency Kits.
