Blue-green algae bloom advisory issued for Shorncliffe Lake A blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) bloom has been identified at Shorncliffe Lake, by Czar, located within the Central Zone of Alberta Health Services.

Residents living near the shores of this lake, as well as visitors to this lake, are advised to take the following precautions: •Avoid all contact with blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms. If contact occurs, wash with tap water as soon as possible.

•Do not swim or wade (or allow your pets to swim or wade) in any areas where blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) is visible.

•Do not feed whole fish or fish trimmings from this lake to your pets.

Consider limiting human consumption of whole fish and fish trimmings from this lake, as it is known that fish may store toxins in their liver. (People can safely consume fish fillets from this lake).

As always, visitors and residents are re-

minded to never drink or cook with untreated water directly from any recreational body of water, including Shorncliffe Lake, at any time.

Boiling of this water will not remove the toxins produced by blue-green algae. An alternate source of drinking water should also be provided for pets and livestock while this advisory is active.

Blue-green algae is naturally occurring and often becomes visible when weather conditions are calm.

Appearing like scum, grass clippings, fuzz or globs on the surface of water, bluegreen algae can be blue-green, greenishbrown, brown, and/or pinkish-red, and often smells musty or grassy.

People who come in contact with visible blue-green algae or who ingest water containing blue-green algae may experience skin irritation, rash, sore throat, sore red

Due to this, the advisory will remain in effect for Shorncliffe Lake until further notice.

Please note that areas of Shorncliffe Lake in which the blue-green algae bloom is NOT visible can still be used for recreational purposes, even while this bluegreen algae Health Advisory is in place.

Forestburg to host a candidate forum Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Battle River School Division announced Friday, May 5, through Communications Coordinator Diane Hutchinson that due to short timelines and the unavailability of one candidate, they have adjusted their plans to hold two forums instead of four, so that all candidates in the Camrose Constituency can

attend.

The two that will be going forward are the Camrose forum, co-hosted by the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA), on May 10, and the Forestburg forum, co-hosted by the ATA and Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch.

“We have received confirmation from the three official candidates that they will all be present for both events,” said

Hutchinson.

The forum is scheduled for May 23 at the Forestburg School. (Watch for the ad next week for times.)

(NDP) have been joined by Independent candidate Bob Blayone A fourth potential candidate has started the registration process but does not yet appear as an official candidate, that is Wildrose Loyalty Coalition candidate Pamela Henson.

RCMP Report

RCMP receive multiple reports of suspicious persons and activity On Wednesday, April 19, a report of Mischief was made from Forestburg. The Subject was throwing rocks at the Complainant’s trailer.

Killam RCMP Members attended and a statement and video surveillance footage were obtained.

Subject was arrested and released by an Undertaking with conditions.

Also that day the Camrose Police service requested assistance from Killam RCMP in apprehending a subject. The subject was found and arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Later that Wednesday, Mischief – Damage to Property was reported from an oil lease site. Copper wire was taken.

No suspects were identified.

Also that day suspicious activity at a residence was reported in Killam. Killam RCMP Members attended and spoke with the homeowner. House was left unlocked in error.

On Thursday, April 20, a suspicious vehicle was reported parked in the trees at an oil lease site.

Killam RCMP Member patrolled the area, but the vehicle was no longer at the location.

Also Thursday a report of three subjects caught at a rural property trying to steal gas. Killam RCMP obtained surveillance and a statement.

There subjects were also involved in incidents in Bashaw and Stettler. The subjects were detained in Flagstaff County by Killam RCMP Members and transferred to Stettler.

Later that Thursday, a call was made to Killam RCMP from a local business in Killam regarding a customer disturbing the peace. A Killam RCMP Member spoke with the subject and issued a warning.

Also Thursday, Killam RCMP were called regarding a dispute from neighbours. Killam Members spoke to both parties, and determined that no threats were made; they

were advised to stay away from each other.

Again on Thursday a report of Harassing Communications was made out of Alliance. The complainant was worried that the caller maybe able to access personal information. A Killam RCMP Member contacted the complainant and discussed fraud safety measures.

Later in the day a suspicious vehicle was reported in Killam. The complainant was worried it was an individual from a previous issue. Killam RCMP Member spoke with the complainant and assured him it wasn’t.

Also that Thursday a suspicious vehicle was reported on private property in Hardisty. A Killam RCMP Member ran the vehicle information and it was not reported as stolen.

On Sunday, April 23, a complaint of three suspicious vehicles was reported on a rural road in Flagstaff County. Killam Members spoke with the registered owners and they were hunting in a

nearby field.

Also Sunday a report of Trespassing was reported at a rural residence. Killam Members attended and asked the Subjects to leave.

On Monday, April 24, a theft in progress was reported of railway ties on Highway 14. Members patrolled the area and nothing was found.

That Monday a report Theft Under $5000 was made from a business in Forestburg. The subject was in the back of the building attempting to take recycled electronics.

Members attended and the subject was gone. The complainant advised he had worked things out with the subject.

Later that Monday a report of Harassment was made at a rural residence.

The Complainant reported in an earlier occurrence of people he is familiar with returning to his residence. Killam Members attended and advised the subjects they would be charged if they returned to the property.

Late on Monday, Killam RCMP Members assisted

Camrose RCMP with two stolen sea-doos. Surveillance was available. Killam Members located the suspect vehicle in Forestburg. Trailer or sea-doos were not located during a search of the property.

Also that Monday, Killam RCMP received a call from a local business regarding an unwanted male causing a distur-

bance. A Killam Member attended and the subject was gone. The Member located the subject and advised him to stay away from the business.

On Wednesday, April 26, a report of a suspicious vehicle was made from Daysland. The vehicle was thought to be the vehicle used in the theft of the sea-doos from Killam

two days prior. A Killam RCMP Member spoke with the registered owner and photos of the vehicle were taken.

Later on Wednesday, Killam RCMP received a report of a male laying in the ditch under a tarp on Highway 13, near Daysland. A Killam Member attended and Continued on Page 25

Hoofin’ it in Hardisty MS Walk returns for its second year Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Hoofin’ it in Hardisty, the first Flagstaff County MS Walk, returns this Saturday, May 13, for the second year.

Patricia Armitage organized last year’s walk, using the Hardisty Walking Trails, with help from the greater Hardisty community, and raised over $16,000 for the MS Society of Canada.

This year’s walk promises to be successful with $4,250 already pledged, and nine teams/individuals registered online, with 30 registered participants as of April 27.

Armitage says there’s a small change in the course, but she’s already been out to map out the walking (or running) path for those taking part.

Gibson Energy is sponsoring a postwalk barbeque event, and Armitage has also had many local businesses and in-

dividuals donate prizes towards a raffle table.

It’s not too late to donate online, Armitage has set up a Facebook page Hoofin’ it in Hardisty! with links to the MS Society official Walk donation page.

You can also drop off donations at Hardisty Laundry Service, with Penny.

This year Armitage asked as many people as possible to pre-register so she could track numbers to ensure there’s enough space and food for all participants.

Armitage did her first MS Walk in 2012 for her mom, Laura Johnson, and has participated in every Walk since then. Last year she realized that there are people right in Flagstaff who also have MS, and decided to try to start a local walk in Hardisty.

This year’s walk starts at Site 5B of the Hardisty Lake Campground, with registration starting at 9:30 am.

The first annual Hoofinʼ it in Hardisty MS Walk was a huge success.

OPINION Guest Editorial: Voters encouraged to ‘Think Alberta, Vote Local’ Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis) asks voters to ‘Think Alberta, Vote Local’ during the 2023 provincial general election to get political parties and candidates to consider and address critical issues that affect the association’s 275 member communities.

We encourage Albertans to ask candidates who show up at their doorsteps, ‘Who has the best plan for their community?’ when it comes to three key municipal priorities – Community Building (infrastructure), Community Safety (including policing) and Community Healthcare (including Emergency Medical Services).

Numerous provincial governments have tackled these issues with varying degrees of success over the past 15 years.

“The complex challenges our member communities face did not erupt overnight," said President Cathy Heron.

"Alberta Municipalities realizes it will take time for any provincial government, regardless of political stripe, to address the current $30-billion infrastructure deficit, the root causes of crime and public disorder, and Alberta’s strained healthcare system.

Albertans need to know how the political parties and candidates intend to address these complex challenges if they are elected on May 29."

We will conduct several online media availabilities over the next month, beginning May 9, to address these important local issues and help generate discussion among the political parties, candidates and Albertans.

War Amps and Playsafe urge mower safety Dear Editor, When I was two years old, I ran into the path of a riding lawn mower and lost my right leg below the knee. It all happened so fast: one moment I was playing outside, and the next I was too close to the mower.

Having grown up as part of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, I am now committed to spreading the Association’s PLAYSAFE message. With lawn cutting season upon us, I want everyone to know that kids should not ride, operate or play near lawn mowers.

Though I’ve learned to accept and

appreciate who I am today, I want to use my experience to help prevent others from going through what I did. Please make sure children are always at a safe distance from lawn mowers. And don’t underestimate the importance of safety when operating any machinery. I urge you to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and those around you.

Crime continues to rise Amidst a rise of violent crime in Canada, the Trudeau Government continues to double down on their false narratives and failed policies. It doesn’t matter where you live, crime - particularly violent crime - is escalating fast. From Vancouver to Toronto, and from farms to First Nations’ Reserves, the public safety of Canadians across the nation is at risk.

Canadian media headlines have been plagued with reports of sex offenders being released only to continue their pattern of victimization, random attacks by repeat violent offenders, and gangs seeming emboldened to carry out their criminal activities.

We have seen the tragic consequences of this in our communities. Canadians expect their justice system to work and increasingly don’t trust it.

In the eight years since Justin Trudeau took office, violent crime has increased by 32 per cent, and gang-related murders have doubled. Despite this broad increase in crime, Justin Trudeau refuses to acknowledge his role. And further, when faced with criticism, he turns to an old tactic… pretending to take action by attacking those who own guns legally. The Liberals are adamantly focusing on this failed approach to public safety policy and violating the rights of law-abiding firearm owners.

On April 26th, the Liberals’ detailed their confiscation plan, where they will buy back legally acquired firearms from law-abiding firearms retailers in Canada.

The source of crime is not the hunter who stores their rifle away as required by law and does what they have been taught in a government-approved firearm training course or the enthusiast who goes to the range to perfect their craft. And it’s certainly not the farmer who carries a firearm out of necessity. The tragedy is that the Liberals are making life more difficult for all those folks who choose to follow the rules while making it easier for criminals to victimize the public.

The Liberals have created a revolving door in our justice system, made it easier to get bail and parole with Bill C-75, repealed mandatory minimum sentences for serious crimes with Bill C-5 (including gun crimes and assaults), and have failed to take any meaningful action even when given the opportunity. Hardened criminals are walking free because of these actions, and the way Justin Trudeau and the Liberals have decided to address it is to play politics.

I am proud to be the Member of Parliament for Battle River-Crowfoot, an area that encompasses many that are negatively impacted by the Liberals’ crusade against firearm ownership and because of rural crime, our public safety is jeopardized further due to Liberal mismanagement.

The increasing crime rates across this great country of ours need to be a priority of this government and the solutions must be cogent and understanding of the rights of Canadians. It comes down to a simple message, Canada deserves a government that will respect them and do the hard work required to rebuild the trust that has been lost in our public institutions. That is a task that Canada’s Conservatives led by Pierre Poilievre are up to.

Coronation officially marks the reign of King Charles III Leslie Cholowsky Editor

On Saturday, May 6, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, with Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Whit Fraser, attended the Coronation of Canada's new Monarch, His Majesty King Charles III, in London, United Kingdom. Prime Minister Trudeau was accompanied by Sophie Grégoire Trudeau. They were joined by a delegation of Indigenous leaders, young Canadians, and other notable Canadians.

To mark the Coronation, and in recognition of His Majesty's longstanding commitment to environmental protection and conservation, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that the Government of Canada will donate $100,000 to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC).

At a Coronation celebratory event in Ottawa on Saturday, the Government of Canada unveiled a new Royal Crown, Royal Flag, Canadian stamp, and collector coins in honour of His Majesty's Coronation.

The new Canadian Royal Crown incorporates uniquely Canadian elements, including stylized maple leaves and a wavy blue line representing the country's lands and waterways.

The design also includes a nod to Indigenous teachings about the importance and connection to water and to the land. The Crown was created by the Canadian Heraldic Authority as a symbol of the Canadian monarchy and

was approved by His Majesty the King.

The new flag of the Sovereign was also recently approved by King Charles III. It is a rectangular representation of the shield of the coat of arms of Canada, featuring maple leaves and royal emblems of the United Kingdom and France. The flag emphasizes that the Royal Arms of Canada are also the arms of the monarch of Canada and will serve for all future sovereigns. The flag was created by the Canadian Heraldic Authority.

May is off to a glorious start! Even those who were up before dawn to watch the Coronation of King Charles III, cup of tea in hand, were met with pleasant temperatures.

Service groups, clubs, and organizations were out in full force Saturday morning cleaning up the ditches.

While this is a major fundraiser for groups like 4-H, the museum, or church youth groups, it also goes a long way to beautifying our roadways, which, hopefully, will stay trash-free for some weeks.

CHSPS students and staff pitched in around town on Friday as well.

Their hard work is always appreciated.

Many folks took time to browse Sedgewick’s annual Town Wide Garage Sale on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The Anglican Church’s hot dog barbeque and dessert deal is always a treat for hungry bargain hunters.

On Thursday, May 4, Sedgewick Library hosted Tiny Toes Treasures along with Camrose Family Resource Centre.

Moms and their little ones had a chance to visit, get to know some new people, and create a footprint craft to take home.

It’s great to see the bright, welcoming new library space being used as a place for community members to connect, and to have children in the library from such an early age!

The Flagstaff Players’ long-awaited production of Guards!

Guards! opened this past weekend. By all reports, both the meal and the show were terrific.

Those who attend next weekend’s performances will be in for lots of fun, particularly on Saturday as audience members are invited to don Steam Punk attire.

Steam punk is “a genre of science fiction that has

a historical setting and typically features steampowered machinery rather than advanced technology.”

So, wear a Victorian top hat and welder’s goggles and you’ll be on the right track. There may be show tickets available at the door.

Can you believe it has been a year since Hari and Naga took over the pharmacy? Join them the afternoon this Friday to celebrate their first anniversary with coffee and cupcakes!

Mother’s Day is next weekend and for many that means a visit to some of our many lovely local greenhouses.

Once again, Lougheed’s Iron Creek Museum is hosting a pop-up greenhouse with this year’s proceeds going toward the restoration of the facility’s Sons of Norway Log Hall. You can find out more information in this week’s Classifieds. Don’t forget to advertise in the paper!

Daysland’s Martha Hayworth celebrates 105th birthday Martha Hayworth, who resides at Providence Place, celebrated an amazing 105 years with on Sunday, April 23.

Hayworth enjoyed the afternoon with family and friends at Providence Place to mark this amazing milestone.

She was born seven months before Word War I ended, and a month after she was born, Canadian women, excluding Quebec, were given the right to vote in federal elections.

That June, the Spanish Flu became

pandemic.

Over 30 million people worldwide would die over the next six months.

Martha has seen five monarchs during her lifespan, and the end of both World Wars.

She lived through two worldwide pandemics, and has seen many changes in daily life over her 105 years.

Wildfires plague parts of Alberta and force evacuations AHS evacuates hospitals and medical centres; Alberta Ag Societies step up to offer assistance Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Due to the ongoing risk of fire, many areas of the Province have instituted total fire bans.

As of May 9, Flagstaff County is still under a Fire Restriction.

The Fire Restriction, put in place by Flagstaff Regional Emergency Services Society (FRESS) applied to not just Flagstaff County but to all municipalities within the region.

For any person considering taking advantage of warmer weather to go camping outside the region, it is strongly recommended that you consult ‘www. albertafirebans.ca’ as a fire ban may differ from county to county with regards to barbecues, smokers, or fire pits.

As of May 9 there are 87 active wildfires in the province, with a number of those still considered out of control in the western side of Alberta.

Eight of those are located in the Edson Forest Area, with six in the Slave Lake Forest Area.

Fire activity over the past week has seen evac-

uation orders issued for a number of communities, with others placed on notice.

Hazardous road condition alerts were sent out province wide because of smoke reducing visibility in many areas of the province.

Those communities under evacuation order have roadblocks preventing residents from returning or visitors from entering danger areas.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has evacuated four acute care hospitals, including Drayton Valley, Edson, Fox Creek, and High Prairie, as well as Evansburg Health Centre/Good Samaritan Pembina Village, East Prairie Community Health Services, and Rainbow Lake Community Health Centre.

These centres were evacuated late last week and remain closed.

AHS says, “Evacuated patients and continuing care residents are being cared for in safe and appropriate settings. All zones are opening care spaces to accommodate those in need.

“These relocations

took place using EMS ground and air transport options and chartered buses as required.

Whenever possible, patients and residents are being accompanied and supported by staff.

“AHS continues to contact families of loved ones to share patient/resident location information, and all zones are actively working to ensure patients and residents are safely cared for in temporary locations.

“AHS is also working with provincial and municipal leaders, as well as community partners, to be ready to return patients and residents to facilities as communities reopen. AHS is also prepared in the event that other sites are at risk from wildfire.”

The Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) undertook a program of caring for domestic animals left in centres evacuated in Drayton Valley and Brazeau, instituting a feeding in place support program and is trying to help evacuees who evac-

uated with their pets..

Ag Societies throughout the province are working to create safe places for livestock and other farm animals which were able to be evacuated through the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies, providing space for animals and RVs for anyone in need.

Over the weekend Alberta declared a State of Emergency.

“Under the Emergency Management Act, declaring a state of emergency is a legal mechanism that provides the provincial government with a higher level of intergovernmental coordination, around the clock monitoring of the situation, access to emergency discretionary funds, the ability to mobilize additional supports and continue working with municipalities, organizations and businesses to support evacuated residents.”

Daysland School celebrates Grad Class of 2023 Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Daysland School kicked off grad season in Flagstaff County with their graduation ceremonies on Friday, May 5.

The Class of 2023 consisted of 20 students this year, who entered the ceremonies dressed in their formal wear as they took their place on stage one by one.

Grade 11 students Taylor Birkjar and Dylan Kruchten did an excellent job of co-emceeing the ceremony.

Mrs. Thomas was the first speaker of the night, giving a heartwarming account of this special class who she said consistently demonstrated that they are an exemplary class of people with their caring, their acceptance, and their closeness.

Guest speakers Principal Wes Wilson and Mrs. Walker complimented and gently roasted the students with funny video and photo clips. Mr. Wilson said, “In my four years at the school, I have become quite fond of this group; I appreciate, respect, and admire them.”

He added, “Truthfully, if I had my way, I would like to keep you here as long as possible, but I know it’s time to let you go.”

Mrs. Walker said she’d had the honour of teaching this class for the past three years. “I can say honestly that this has been one of my favourite groups of students to teach. I always look forward to those times in my schedule where I got to teach this class, no matter the

subject.

“Being with this group made every class more entertaining and enjoyable.”

Wilson said, “Mrs. Walker and I started our speech planning by asking ourselves ‘What defines this group of students?’ We kept coming up with two themes: acceptance and leadership.

“There may not be a better compliment for a class of high school students.

“At a time when it feels like we are struggling as a society to work on our differences and accept one another, you as a group of young people demonstrate it so masterfully; what a positive place our classes, schools, and communities can be when everyone accepts people for who they are. ”You build one another up, look out for each other, and genuinely enjoy one another’s company.”

Mrs. Walker reinforced the positive attributes of the class. “Throughout the years I’ve seen multiple examples where they have demonstrated they really just care immensely about each other as well as the other students in school.”

Walker said he came to Daysland when the grads were in Grade 9, and remembering being pulled in the direction of this class. “You made me feel welcome, and I enjoyed our interactions.

“As your class has continued to grow, I have considered this group exceptional leaders. ”You led with your kindness, hard work, and general acceptance of each

other. Your absence next year is going to leave big shoes to fill.”

Wilson and Walker then addressed the class student by student, applying the grad’s theme, ‘When daydreams become reality,’ to each of them. Parents and guests were directed to video and still shots as the pair gently roasted the grads with affection and good humour.

Wilson summed up his portion of the speech by saying, “Today is a happysad day for me. I am happy for you as a class, because you are blessed. Look back at your time at this school and know that you have done well. I can honestly say that you have made this school a better place during your time here. I’m also sad because we will miss you. I will miss coming into your class to see what you are learning and then getting completely sidetracked by random stories and jokes.”

Walker closed by saying, “Looking to next year, I know I will miss each of you and all of your goofy antics. I don’t think I’ll ever have another class like this one. You’ve definitely left your mark on this school, and a lasting impression on your teachers.”

She added, “To finish off, we have one final piece of advice. Don’t be afraid to have big dreams; remember, though, that just having dreams isn’t enough. If you are going to achieve your goals in life it’s going to take determination and perseverance. But if all that hard work turns those daydreams into reality, then it will have all been worth it.”

When daydreams become reality was the theme of the 2023 Daysland Graduation ceremony held on Friday, May 5, at the gymnasium in the Daysland School. The gym was packed with teachers, school faculty, family, and friends that are near and dear to the 20 graduates, helping each and every one of them celebrate such a major milestone in their lives. The evening was full of laughter, life lessons from chosen speakers, a couple of good-natured roasts. Congeratulations to the Daysland Class of 2023, may you dream big and make them reality.

They talked about the positive affects of the school and community and how they’ve shaped the class through their experiences, with humorous examples of things that had happened in and to the class through their journey through Daysland School over the years.

Petiot summed up their presentation by saying, “These memories helped teach us many lessons, but we can’t give all the credit to those moments, as our wonderful parents and teachers guided us through all our years at Daysland School.

“We appreciate you for always allowing us to dream big, and supporting us as we embark on these next steps.”

Downie added, “And, of course, we have to thank our classmates.

“For the Class of 2023, congratulations to us, and we hope that all of our daydreams continue to become reality.”

Next up on the program was a slideshow created by graduates Shyah Blake and Baylee Huddlestone, which featured each graduate at various ages, with humour thrown in.

Graduates Andrew Johns and J’lyn Schneider then roasted the grads fondly with their ‘Most Likely’ list.

The graduates were then called individually to accept certificates from Wilson and Thomas to close the ceremony.

The grads returned for the grand march, followed by the parents’ and partners’ dances.

OBITUARIES

Siegfried "Fred" Hansi Rittammer

(June 24, 1937 May 1, 2023) Siegfried Rittammer of Daysland, Alberta passed away May 1, 2023, at the age of 85.

Fred was born in Gross Orlin, Poland, to Reinhard and Hedwig (Heidi) Rittammer June 24 ,1937.

World War II interrupted

Fred’s early life.

In 1947 Fred, with his family, fled Poland and came to Liebeck, Germany, where his dad found work in Winkelman’s butcher business.

In early March of 1949, he and his family sailed from Bremenhavin, Germany, on the refugee ship, the Beaverbrae, to Canada, arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, March 11, 1949.

After a long train ride across Canada, the Rittammers arrived in Strome, Alberta, where Reinhard’s two halfbrothers lived, Albert and Eddie Hahn.

He went to Leith school, a country school.

His parents lived on the farm with Albert Hahn.

Reinhard found work at Gordon Mohler’s in Daysland, Walstein’s in Forestburg, and Walter Dorin’s in Holden.

The Rittammers came back to Daysland and bought City Meat Market from Gordon Mohler in 1951.

Fred and his sister Benita helped their parents in the store as they learned english in school.

Fred spent the next 44 years working in the Meat Market and owning the store which he named Daysland Meat Market.

Fred loved sports, soccer, golf, ice curling, refereeing hockey, fishing, and

1925 - 2023 Ruth Erikssen was born on May 26, 1925, at Sedgewick, Alberta, and passed away on February 21, 2023, at the age of 97 years.

Ruth was predeceased by her parents Melvin

and Gunda Storbakken; husband Gudmunn; special friend Stan Swaren; daughters Ruby and Carol; brother Roy; sisters-in-law Regina and Eleanor; daughterin-laws Liz and Diane; son-in-law Richard (Dick) Pellern; and special friend Lon Chisson.

In 1964, Fred married June Nielson of the Kelsey District. They raised three sons, Randy, Kerwin, and Troy. Fred loved his boys. June taught school for several years then worked in the Meat Market.

Fred is survived by his wife of 58 years June; his three sons Randy of Camrose, Kerwin (Alison) of Red Deer, and Troy (Marylene) of Edmonton; six grandchildren Conner, Emily, Gavin, Lucia, Anna, and Naomi; and sister Hanna Lewis of Nelson, BC. Fred was predeceased by his parents Reinhard and Hedwig; three brothers in Germany; sisters Edith Rolf and Benita Hendry; mother-in-law and father-in-law Axel and Ellen Nielson; broth-

Firefighters battle 'significant’ BRSD budget for next year reduces instructional funding, brush fire west of Viking increases other departments Patricia Harcourt Staff Reporter

Viking Fire and Rescue battled what was called a “significant’ brush fire west of Viking on Thursday, May 4. The fire was difficult enough to extinguish that four departments with over 10 fire units were needed to control the fires.

Along with Viking, there were firefighters from Kinsella, Bruce, and Irma fire departments.

As well as the larger brush fire, a smaller grass fire also took hold that day.

Both were burning along the CN Rail line.

“The Viking Fire Department responded to two separate incidents that were started along the CN rail tracks,” said Viking Fire Chief Kevin Fornal. “The first one was about noon on the 4th (of May) and was located east of Viking at Range Road 120 with the second one approximately at 1900 hours located west towards Bruce in the area of Range Road 140.

“The first fire took approximately five hours to bring under control with several hours extinguishing hot spots,” he said.

“The second one was smaller and was easily extinguished in a short time.”

He estimated that the fire to the east burned about “a one mile long area of grass and thick brush.” The larger fire had

the fire department on scene for about six hours.

A message was sent out at the time for people to avoid driving by the fire scene out of curiosity. “We need our room to work and for coming and going of trucks,” said the message.

The dry conditions here and all over the province have resulted in a provincial state of emergency being declared.

A large majority of the wildfires being fought right now are the result of human error.

In Viking, a cigarette was found in the burnt grass resulting in another message: “The dangers of flicking a cigarette out the window, even if you think it will land on the highway, can have devastating results.”

However Fornal says the cause was due to something else.

“The cause was not believed to be a cigarette, but started by the CN train,” he said. And there was quick action to contain it.

“A couple of farmers brought their tractors out to help disc the fire to prevent fire spread,” he said.

“With the windy conditions sparks were jumping up to 100 feet and the farmers with the tractors were able to work up the field and extinguish smaller fires and limit fire spread.”

Funding for next year’s school budget remains close to the same as the current year, states Battle River School Division in its latest report.

However, during budget deliberations, it was determined that funds for instruction would be reduced while other departments have been increased.

Cited are an increase in the operations and maintenance department, however no other increases were named.

The BRSD board expects to approve the 2023-2024 budget by the end of May. As for adult student fees for next year, the board has set them for $204.33 per

credit taken. Also, the board will keep the tuition fee of $10,900 for international students.

However, the International Student Homestay Program fee has been increased. The board will be reviewing the fee structure at its budget deliberations at the end of May. BRSD will be partnering with the Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch Society to hold a provincial election candidate forum on Tuesday, May 23, at the Forestburg School.

Another forum will be held at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Centre in Camrose on May 10, in partnership with the Camrose Chamber of Commerce.

Elections Alberta gives those wishing to run for political office until 2 p.m. on Nomination Day, May 11, to submit nomination papers to the Returning Officer for review and acceptance.

The following two ridings in the local area each have several candidates fielded as if May 9 for the May 29 fixed election date. There may be more to come as there

are still two more days after that for someone to turn in their nomination papers.

President McCracken tells me they are always looking for new members and fundraising ideas.

Betty Stoner’s sister Darlene is visiting, I hear she’s kind of leaning towards living in Alliance.

me to lunch at her place on Friday. She is expecting her sister from Saskatoon and their father to visit on Saturday.

Barn Lamoth says she has two more trips to Calgary to finish the move to Alliance. She is looking forward to being here full-time and getting a garden going.

Vickie Cloakey has been busy adjusting a dress for me. The beauti-

ful dress was at least two sizes too small, but she made it fit with the addition of loops and laces up the back. I will need help getting it on and off. My daughters were determined that I should wear it to dinner in the palace in Kuala Lumpur.

The Library Board meets on Tuesday. Planning a bingo for June 2 is on the agenda.

The subject was known to Killam Members and they attended his residence.

Later that day a suspicious person/ vehicle was reported outside of a busi-

ness (overnight) in Killam. Members attended and spoke with the subject who advised he was on days off and nothing to do. The subject left.

On Saturday, April 29, a truck was reported stolen overnight from a business in Sedgewick. A Killam Member attended and was advised there is possible surveillance from neighbouring businesses.

The truck was later recovered in Warburg and the registered owner was notified.

Also Saturday, a report of multiple suspicious vehicles was reported parked along Range Road 163. A Killam Member spoke with the registered owner and he advised he was guiding geese hunters in the field.

On Monday, May 1, a business in Killam reported an individual causing disturbances and harassing employees. Kil-

lam RCMP Members assisted the business with a Trespass Notice.

Also reported and attended to by Killam RCMP over the reporting period from April 19 to May 1 were two false alarms, one matter under

the Family Law Act, one matter under the Mental Health Act, four speeding violations, five moving traffic violations, three non-moving traffic violations, four traffic collisions, two matters under other provincial/territor-

ial statutes, and performed one wellbeing check.
