Gymnast lands Gold medal, Holden’s new three Silvers at Canmore public charter school set to open in the fall Moush John Staff Reporter

Local gymnast Paisley Merta, who trains out of Wainwright Gymnastics Club, attended the Canmore Illusions Summit Invitational in Canmore on May 5. This was the largest competition that Paisley has attended this year. She scored in all her events, coming out with three Silvers and a Gold. Paisley is working hard on her showcase routines for the club’s year end show in June and their final meet her club is hosting. Then she will be moving up a level and start her summer training to prepare to compete internationally in California in January. Submitted by Wainwright Gymnastics Club

Holden Rural Academy set to open in fall this year will be a new offering in the community and surrounding areas with a mix of learning and adventure. According to Karla Janzen, the Academy spokesperson, students will have the ability to choose from various projects, many of which are off-campus in addition to the core subjects they will be taking in class. “Things are falling into place for the Holden Rural Academy,” Janzen said. “Our education consultant, Kevin Van Lagen, toured the school, gave us an assessment of our programming, and has helped us in developing a plan for our programming. “Students will have enough time, about eight weeks, to gain comprehensive experience in particular skills. They can then choose to try a new skill from sports – hockey, swimming, fitness training, baseball or a combination; fine arts – drama at the theatre or art classes at the gallery; automotive and HD mechanics; apprenticeship (RAP) or work experience and Green Certificate; or a variety of some of the other courses on the offer.” Janzen added that if students require a heavier academic load, they can find the right balance of that and off-campus opportunities that will help them succeed. “Our staff will work together with students and families to develop an education plan that has clear expectations for academic achievement, and helps students develop career goals,” she explained. “We are collaborating with local professionals, trades people, hobbyists and entrepreneurs, to deliver quality education for rural students.” Janzen noted that Holden Rural Academy is a public charter school. “There are no tuition fees, but there will be school fees, and some projects may have a fee attached.”
