Alberta Party leader sees room for change in the province

BY JOHN MATHER Alberta Party leader Barry Morishita made his first visit to the Fort Saskatchewan- Vegreville Constituency Association, May 16.

The former Brooks mayor and president of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) updated the members of the constituency on where the Party was and how they were preparing for the upcoming provincial election, still a year away.

Local constituency president Brenda Thomlinson welcomed Morishita to a Fort Saskatchewan hotel where the group met, stating she was new in the position and this was the first meeting of the constituency association since the pandemic restrictions had been lifted.

“I wondered what we would discuss, but I reached out to Barry to provide an update and he said he would visit us in person,” she said in introducing Morishita.

Morishita went out of

his way to stress the party was growing and while many constituencies were beginning to meet with smaller numbers he expected those to grow as candidates were nominated and activities got underway for the upcoming election.

“We’re building every constituency as we go,” he said.

“He gave some background on himself and said he had an advantage over many provincial leaders in that he had personally visited just about every city, town and village in the province during his four years as the AUMA president.

“I know a lot of people across the province and I know that will help us in the long run,” he said.

He said he decided to run for the Alberta Party leadership because as a municipal politician he had become frustrated with the ability to get some things done because “there are so many gatekeepers” blocking the way.

“There are so many

blockages to progress,” he said. “So many people are holding on to regulations and money and thereby blocking progress. They have the same solutions and the same progress for every problem and want to put us all in the same little box.”

“That’s just not working.”

He said as he toured the province he saw all the potential in the various communities he visited.

“That’s potential that can’t just be defined one way,” he said. “There’s teacher communities, non-profit communities and their potential is being very much beaten down by regulations and the way they have to do things.”

He said he wanted to see more decentralized powers and that’s what attracted him to the Alberta Party because it allows for this.

“It’s a principle-based party,” he said. “It looks for solutions first and remembers that the outcomes - the reason we’re

there - is for the community.”

“I think the Alberta Party represents me and is a great party for those electors who are lost right now in the Alberta political scene.”

He said the left and right go back and forth

and the result is a lot of lost investment and capacity because with the constant changes in government, the business community doesn’t know what’s coming next resulting in a loss of investment confidence.

“We need to stop this

in Alberta,” he said.

“We’re making headway in our ability to get out and meet people now that the pandemic is over and we’re spreading the word. There is a hunger for change out there.”

Morishita said after travelling the province, he’s hearing there is a desire for change between the left and right camps that currently exist in the province.

MLA responds to expense claim criticism

BY JANA SEMENIUK Fort Sask - Vegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong Homeniuk recently responded to an article appearing in the Sturgeon Creek Post criticizing her current expense claims for being higher than an expense claim of previous NDP MLA Jessica Littlewood.

Littlewood was lambasted by fellow and former MLAs in 2018 for claiming 80,000 kilometers, the maximum allowable amount for travel, on her expense form which she was reimbursed nearly $35,000.

Littlewood’s home was in Fort Saskatchewan at the time, 36 kilometers from Edmonton.

Although Homeniuk only claimed 49,000 kilometers last year, an added living expense of the maximum $23,160

brought her total claim for the year ending in March 2022 to more than $49,000.

The expense is allowed to cover the cost of accommodation while travelling within the province on MLA business or maintaining a temporary residence to attend a legislative sit-

ting or other MLA business, according to the openalberta.ca website.

“My home is 120 kilometers from the legislature,” said Homeniuk, who resides in Vegreville.

“The legislature does not stop at six. When we sit in the evening, we could be sitting until two

or three in the morning and committees start at 8:00 in the morning. If we are sitting until midnight, it would be ridiculous to drive home and to drive back.”

Homeniuk included she has rented a space in Edmonton for this purpose. In addition, MLAs took a five percent pay cut in 2019 as well as had their fuel, oil changes, and carwashes removed from the list of reimbursed expenses.

In her first year as MLA, Homeniuk was reimbursed $52,910 for mileage and living expenses and $56,648 in her second year. Today mileage is calculated at 50.5 cents per kilometer, while in 2018 it was 43.5 cents.

In Littlewood’s first year, she was reimbursed $4,396 for travel and accommodation, $24,392 in her second year,

$41,641 in her third and $12,184 in her last year as

Opinion How many Jason sequels must Albertans endure?

BY JOHN MATHER Well wasn’t that a night.

In one Battle of Alberta the Flames doused the Oilers in their first match up of the NHL playoff series.

In the other battle, Jason Kenney fended off total political annihilation by eking out 51.4 per cent of the leadership review vote.

Now that should lay any claims of impropriety to rest because if someone is going to try and go out of their way to fix an outcome do they want it to be a basic tie? I don’t think so.

Then came Jason’s bombshell.

He’s not happy with the result and has told UCP Party officials he’s stepping down.

Good on ya Jason. That was the proper thing to do when you only get a majority result by that slim a margin. It was a decisive indication that within UCP party membership there was a lot of disappointment in your leadership or lack thereof.

Fast forward to the next day and after a six hour caucus meeting we’re told Jason isn’t going anywhere … yet.

Nope he’s staying on until a new leader is chosen.

Why Jason …. why?

We can already see parallels to Jason Voorhees … you know he of the Friday the 13th movie fame.

To date there have been 13 Friday the 13th sequels.

How many sequels will we see of Jason Kenney … politician?

There was young Jason elected at 29 to the halls of Federal power.

There was Jason the respected Federal cabinet minister holding key portfolios in the Harper government.

Then there’s cowboy Jason conquering hero returning to the Alberta heartland to unite the right and destroy the evil NDP hordes who were proliferating provincial government offices.

And then there’s our man Jason turfing the NDP with his newly formed UCP party getting a strong mandate.

And then we run into wrong-way Jason picking fights with doctors and educators (who do seem to want to fight the government as much as they want to educate) just as a world wide pandemic broke out.

CONTINUED There was “best summer ever” Jason badly miscalculated, so last summer’s Calgary Stampede could proceed.

Now we have ‘hell no I won’t go’ Jason.

Please Mr. Kenney… just call it a day.

Gather your handlers and back room advisors and head off to another pasture. And please do it before May 2023.

Don’t you realize by staying on right now, you're hampering the UCP’s ability to repair itself internally. This is the party you created. Are you now intentionally trying to destroy it?

Your caucus doesn’t like you. Average Albertans certainly have no faith or trust in you.

It’s like you’re in one of those terrible internet commercials… “You can’t keep going on like this.”

The UCP needs to reestablish itself with Albertans in less than a year if it doesn’t want to pass the reins of power back to the NDP. It needs a great reset more than Justin Trudeau!

Whether that reestablishment is a further right party or a more centrist party remains to be seen.

Quite frankly, I don’t think either Brian Jean (another former Federal politician) or Danielle Smith (who led a pack of Wildrosers to the Progressive Conservative ranks several years back), are the right leaders.

The party needs someone with fresh blood and fresh ideas who, dare I say it, is Albertan and never been tainted by the scent of Ottawa.

The provincial economy is on the upswing and a fresh face to direct economic policies, make some peace with the doctors and reexamine the provincial education curriculum seeking some input from educators is needed.

And they must be strong-willed and most determined not to take more economy-killing crap from the Liberals loonies in Ottawa.

Jason, you did implement some positive policies but you forgot that your UCP party is made up of members besides yourself and your cronies.

It’s time to go Jason!

Staying on day after day, hour after hour, minute after minute, as the clock edges closer to the election next May is you doing further disservice to Albertans.

From Where I Sit: A Fine Evening

By Hazel Anaka I spent Sunday evening of the long weekend with two guys whose names you’ll recognize. One was Connor McDavid; the other Dr. Ho. The sports commentators have taken to calling McDavid the greatest hockey player of all time.

And that’s saying something in a town where Wayne Gretzky set the bar with one record after another. I’m inclined to believe it. Even my MacBook Pro knows if I misspell his name!

Of course, even occasional fans know that Sunday was game three of the second round of playoff hockey and the first game against Calgary at Rogers Place.

I wonder if anyone was measuring the decibels in the joint as the crowd went nuts before the drop of the puck. From what I could tell from home, fans were ready to rock the night with overthe-top makeup, dyed

hair, wigs, Oilers’ jerseys, and copper foil pompoms. A new accessory is the huge metallic-looking chain with a giant Oilers dangle. Makes Mr. T look under-dressed.

When I attended my very first Oilers game in the 80s, I was shocked by how quiet the arena was.

When you watch at home, the play-by-play guys are constantly chattering, describing the action, spewing player stats, and reliving history about long ago games, plays, and players. In the arena, there is no such talk. You’ve gotta pay attention, follow the puck, crane your neck for action against the boards. If you miss the goal, the body shattering hit, the infractions, the only saving grace is the replay on the centre ice clock screen. While that’s good, it’s nothing like what you get from TV coverage. You will see what happened over and over and over again from every conceivable angle and with freeze frame.

At home, you’ll also save the drive into Edmonton, the holdup style parking rates, and the scandalous prices on concession food and liquor.

We’ve established the McDavid connection but

what about Dr. Ho? As I sat typing this at my desk, Dr. Ho’s Pain Therapy Circulation Promoter was underfoot.

It was my at-home therapy for sciatica. Anyone who’s suffered this condition knows the symptoms well and how, at its worst, there is no position sitting, standing, or sleeping that offers relief.

My case is likely to need a couple chiro treatments and more time on the massage table. Using Dr. Ho’s first invention, getting serious about the stretches, rubbing in some Diclofenac, and maybe popping some pain meds are the on the agenda.

I also have the Dr. Ho neck and shoulder contraption. I think the concept is good for those of us suffering from neck and shoulder tension and pain. The part I don’t like is needing to put my hands through the loops hanging down the front. The downward pressure helps the electrodes make better, more consistent contact with the skin. And we know I don’t do well just sitting doing nothing. I’m usually crafting or sewing late into the night.

At the risk of jinxing something, the score at the end of the second

period is 4-0 for Edmonton.

Goalie Mike Smith has done what he’s needed to do. I can only imagine the euphoria in the arena. I’m glad because our son came from Colorado to watch it. Oh sure, he scheduled a meeting with his business partner but we all know the real reason for the trip. And with hockey, it could have easily gone the other way with a guy wondering why he went to the expense of being there to witness a blowout.

In a recent phone call with my grandson when the talk inevitably turned to hockey, Grady said Calgary had the better team but he really hoped the Oilers would win the round. I told him his dad, for a brief time as a kid, was a Flames fan. “Really, I’ll never be able to look at him the same way,” was the serious response. Priceless.

During the course of the game, I managed three forty-minute sessions on the Dr. Ho tens machine… all while multi-tasking!

All in all, it’s been a fine evening for pain management and playoff hockey, from where I sit.

Airstream enthusiasts rally in St. Michael

BY JANA SEMENIUK A dozen familiar silver sausage shaped caravans, also known as Airstreams, converged at the St. Michael Hall last week to begin their annual WBCCI (Wally Byam Caravan Club International) rally which went from May 19-22.

The tight knit group of Airstream owners meet at least twice a year at rallies held across North America. Member and event organizer, Jody Zachoda, said this is the first time the event was held here in Lamont County.

“We were supposed to do it two years ago but because of COVID it had to be cancelled two years in a row. But it gave me extra time to plan,” she said.

The four days the group spent together was full of activities ranging from shopping, to visits at the Ukrainian Village and Elk Island Park, soup nights where Zachoda used her family’s famous Borscht recipe, and a special banquet May 21.

“Thursday as people were arriving, we have a soup night tradition.

People were coming to experience a Ukrainian meal, so I made borsht with my mother-in-law’s recipe. She won the firstand third-year Babas and Borsht cookoff with it,” said Zachoda.

She added that about 50 people attended the catered banquet at St. Michael Hall where Lamont County Reeve David Diduck spoke to

the crowd about some highlights of Lamont County. Entertainment included dancing from the Veselka Ukrainian dancers and stand-up comedy from Mama Marusia.

“It was a great time, and everyone said it was the nicest hall they have been to. They were amazed at all that the area had to offer,” she said.

Zachoda said she and her husband Chris joined the group eight years ago when they bought their Airstream. She added that some people have been members for decades.

“Joining was almost the first thing we did

when we bought ours. I just like the looks of them, and it took me quite a while to find one,” she said.

“Members have a red number and a star on the (Airstream) unit and each star is five years in the club. Some people have seven stars. We have one and in a couple of years we will have two.”

Each Airstream unit left the rally with a goody bag full of local treats like golf balls, cotton candy, local honey, a squeezy doll from the Babas and Borsht festival as well as a ring of sausage. The next rally will be held in the fall.

Lakeland MP’s name appears on provincial UCP leadership survey

BY JOHN MATHER A survey has circulated among UCP members seeking information on who they would like to see as the next party leader replacing Jason Kenney, and Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs’ name appears on it.

The survey is originated by Deslauriers Public Affairs, an Ottawa-based public affairs company with offices in Toronto and Montreal. Its website claims it “specializes in getting politicians elected and helping compa-

nies and organizations navigate the legislative and regulatory landscape of all levels of government.”

The survey, which was anonymously forwarded to The Lamont Leader asks, “If any of the following candidates were to run, who would be your FIRST CHOICE for United Conservative Party leader?”

It then lists the names (in order) Brian Jean, Jason Kenney, Ric McIver, Michelle Rempel Garner, Rajan Sawaney,

her knowledge, Doug Schweitzer, of Danielle Smith, Shannon Stubbs hadn’t made any Stubbs, Travis Toews, Undecided, and None of the a b o v e .

The Leader reached out to Stubbs' office late last week, but because of the long weekend no responses other than an email from her office director Tina Warawa was received.

Warawa said she hadn’t seen the surMP Shannon Stubbs vey but to the best

decisions regarding running for the provincial party leadership although Warawa did state many people were reaching out to ask her about it.

Stubbs and Michelle Rempel Garner are the only two Federal politicians on the list.

Premier Jason Kenney, who resigned following a disappointing result in the recent leadership review, has said he won’t be running in the leadership campaign and on May 23, Doug

Schweitzer said he would not only not seek the leadership but he also wouldn’t be seeking reelection in next May’s provincial election.

To date only Brian Jean and Danielle Smith have stated their intentions to run for the leadership.

There is no information available as to who commissioned this survey at press time. A call to the company’s Ottawa phone number went directly to voicemail on May 24.

County council offers financial support to Chipman 4-H Club

BY JOHN MATHER Lamont County Council received a letter from the Chipman 4-H Beef and Multiclub seeking a donation to assist their upcoming beef sale which will take place May 27 at the Chipman Agriculture Grounds.

It’s the first time the club has held a live auc-

tion since the beginning of the pandemic.

“We have traditionally had a roast beef dinner that is paid for through fundraising by the members, however, given the limited abilities that we have had to get together over the past two years our funds are limited,” the letter stated.

“Would the county be interested in sponsoring and planning this dinner?”

The letter added the club saw the auction as a “great opportunity” for councillors to come out and serve the beef at the evening dinner allowing them to “interact” with the community and

members of the club.

Chief Financial Officer Rodney Boyko told Council on May 10, the Council had previously donated $250 to the club.

“The letter asks for councillors to attend the event as well,” said Reeve David Diduck.

Councillor Daniel Warawa wondered if the

Agricultural Service Board would be providing a scale to weigh the beef as had occurred in previous years.

councillor to come and serve some of the meat.

Diduck suggested a financial contribution be made.

Warawa made a motion to contribute $250 to the club for the 4H Beef and Multiclub dinner. The motion passed with a unanimous vote.

Gophers gone wild in Mundare’s Whitetail area

BY JOHN MATHER There is a gopher problem in the Mundare Whitetail area and Town Councillor Eddie Shepel wants to know what the Town can do about it.

“We have a gopher problem over there that we’ve had for years,” he said. “But it’s getting to the point now where the gophers are running into houses when people open their front doors.”

He said one house has had problems for years and new residents have recently bought the home.

“They have a bunch of kids at (unidentified) Whitetail Green,” he said. “They’re getting the gophers into the backyard and it's getting to the point where it’s not only a mess but it’s causing property damages.”

Councillor Glen Rozumniak agreed stating, “It’s a mess over there.”

Shepel said the small rodents are getting more and more brazen every year and when “they

were running in the ditch it was sort of funny, but now they’re burrowing into yards and it's really out of control.”

“It’s a problem and I really don’t know what we can do with them,” he said.

Shepel reported the Elk Island School Division had hired a company from Vegreville which reportedly could eliminate the gopher issues with a humane process.

“He’s done work in Andrew, the school in Vegreville and in Lamont,” said Shepel.

“He has a process that does it without killing other pets but the main problem is the main breeding area for the gophers is on private property where there are bales of hay stockpiled and I’m wondering if the town can do anything about it.”

Councillor Rick Patrie said since it’s bales on private land which is not farmland, he felt the Town could send the property owners a letter

outlining the problem and asking them to fix it.

“You can’t poison them, you can’t use diesel, and you can’t shoot them in town,” he said. “So I think we have to send the owners a letter to let them know we are concerned about the issue.”

Shepel said trying to fix the problem is hard because when you try to control the rodents in one area they run across the road to another area.

He further stated this wasn’t a problem isolated to Mundare.

But he wondered if the Town could develop a by-law that would allow them to take some action to try and get control of the issue.

“You have to be able to say handle the gophers,” Shepel said. “Before the Town could take action.”

Chief Administrative Officer Colin Zyla said he would have to talk with the Town’s bylaw enforcement officer Ken Podoborozny to see what he thought could be

done.

“I could find out what they do in Vegreville,” he said. “I’m not sure you need an actual bylaw.”

Shepel said he wasn’t sure they needed a bylaw but the situation had to be handled.

Zyla recommended a

motion be made having the Town look into the problem and report back to council which was passed.

Village of Andrew in talks to resume bylaw services

BY JANA SEMENIUK The Village of Andrew may soon resume bylaw services after being without them for the past seven months.

Phil Rowe, Community Services Director for the Town of Vegreville, said he had no choice but to interrupt their contract during the COVID pandemic.

“All municipalities were notified that the REP (Restrictions Exemption Program) had to take precedence and our bylaw officers took control of the scheduling and set up of the REP. It was seven days a week and we had to have an authority figure there to overlook it, or we had to hire security firms to do that. All five of our contract municipalities were notified and understood this had to happen,” he said.

BY JANA SEMENIUK This fall, Bruderheim School will be experiencing its fourth change in Principal over the past five years.

Principal Paul McKay announced the move in the May 13 edition of the school’s newsletter, stating that he will be taking over at Lamont Elementary as principal with Mr. Dave Armbruster replacing McKay at Bruderheim School.

McKay was principal twice in Bruderheim, first in 2017 before accepting another position with Alberta Education and then with a school in Sherwood Park before coming back to Bruderheim for the 21/22 school year.

Mrs. Cheryl Semeniuk was principal from 2019 to 2021 before accepting a position with Next Step Senior High.

In the meantime, former Chief Administrative Officer Sheila Lupul said loose dogs have become a big problem for the Village of Andrew, with the village office receiving more than two phone calls a week complaining of stray dogs.

“With our population that is significant,” she said.

The village has a population of approximately 406 according to Alberta.ca.

A motion was passed during a special meeting of Andrew Council May 11 to investigate options for obtaining another bylaw officer for the village.

Rowe said he is currently in discussions with the Village to possibly resume their contract.

Mundare resident concerned about unsightly property order

BY JOHN MATHER An elderly Mundare resident, struggling with a damaged property in town, came to Mundare Council to seek relief from an unsightly notice and repair or demolish order issued by the town.

Shirley PughAmbrock told Council via a telephone call that she couldn’t afford the repairs and wondered what she could do.

“I know the property is unsightly but the timeline of June 13 is not good,” she said May 17.

“I can’t get any quotes from a contractor but to demolish the home and remove some trees is too expensive for me.”

She told council she was 87-years-old and had some health issues and not much money.

“The little bit of money I have left in savings I need for living and I have no idea just how I’m going to proceed.”

She told council she hadn’t talked to her fam-

ily about the property and her children didn’t live in the area anymore and had no connection to the community. She wondered if she could donate the property to the Town.

She said the Town had told her if they demolished the structure it would be added to her taxes but Pugh-Ambrock was adamantly opposed to this.

“I have always paid my taxes and I can’t afford anything extra,” she said. “I’ve paid every dollar on time and I find the idea that I must be told to have the property cleared by June 13 is unreasonable.”

She said the order to clean up the property just added to her mental stress.

CAO Colin Zyla told council under the Municipal Government Act, if the Town had to clean up the property then the costs were added to the property owner’s taxes.

Pugh-Ambrock said she just couldn’t pay any additional taxes and she would rather will the property to Mundare.

Councillor Eddie Shepel asked if she needed more time to look after the order and PughAmbrock replied she wanted the order totally removed.

“I don’t need this adding to my health issues and giving me more sleepless nights,” she said.

She said she had tried to sell the property and her husband maintained it but it had deteriorated to the point where it was beyond maintaining.

“I won’t let anyone go in the house anymore,” she said.

She said she had estimates of $16,000 to clean the property which she doesn’t have.

Zyla told Council they could vary the order and Pugh-Ambrock asked it be cancelled because she is well aware of the problem without the pressure

of an unsightly premises order on her mind.

She again suggested the Town take over the site, demolish the building and then sell the land. She felt the town would get its money back when the property was sold.

“I just can not have this hanging over the head the way it is,” she said.

Zyla said she could give the property to the Town but then the Town has to assume liability.

When asked if she wanted to do this, she told Council she wanted to talk to her family about it.

Zyla further explained if the order was removed, the Town couldn’t do anything.

She said she had to talk it over with her family but she was insistent on getting the order removed.

Mayor Cheryl Calinoiu told her the order had to remain on the property until she

spoke with her family.

Zyla explained to her, while she could offer the Town the property “at the end of the day it’s up to Council whether they want to accept it.”

He again explained if she didn’t complete the unsightly property orders, then the town would complete the work and the charges would be added to the property’s taxes. If those taxes weren’t paid the

property would be sold by the Town to recover the unpaid taxes, but the process takes up to two or three years.

Council decided they needed time, as did Pugh-Ambrock, to come to a decision, so council passed a motion to extend the order to remove or demolish the structure on the property to July 4 so both parties could review the order.

Mundare Ukrainia Park opening delayed a month

BY JOHN MATHER Issues of vandalism and flooding at Mundare Ukrainia Park have delayed its seasonal opening by a month.

Public Works manager Dave MacDonald in his monthly report to council May 17, reported the plumbing in the concession building at the park had frozen.

“The furnace went out and it’s an old furnace and we have no way of keeping a constant eye on it, and when it went out the water lines froze,” he told council. “We don’t give it a regular check unless we go in every single day and night.”

He said the furnace needed to be replaced and it had been on the books for a couple of years but the Town didn’t have the money for the issue at the time.

MacDonald said he called the alarm company and asked if they could supply a temperature sensor for the furnace so if it malfunctioned or dropped below a certain temperature, he would be advised.

“That will save us until such time as we can replace the furnace,” he said.

MacDonald further told council that after they discovered the freeze up they were working on the north side in the camping area and discovered people had come in and torn all the electrical system apart.

Council speculated the vandals were looking for copper wire, but MacDonald said other than making a mess nothing was taken.

“It’s in the bush side and all the 220 system is torn up,” he said. “We have had an electrician in but I haven’t heard back from him on repair costs yet. It’s frustrating.”

He added the floors of the washrooms and concession are prepped for painting and because of the late spring he hoped everything could be completed by the end of the week.

Councillor Irene Talaga suggested delaying the opening of the park from the May long weekend until June 24 when the first major event is scheduled.

“That would be great if

that could happen,” said MacDonald.

“Well we don’t have any events scheduled until late June and there is another campground in town, so I’d delay the opening until the work can be completed,” said Talaga.

“This way it would give you proper time to get the washrooms ready and the other painting and repairs done,” she added.

Chief Administrative Officer Colin Zyla said there were no functions scheduled for the park until late June when there was a BBQ booked.

Council passed a motion to delay opening the park until June 20, which would allow for a final cleaning and inspection before it opened, and it was carried.
