Run for the Bus raises $2,866 MAUREEN SULLIVAN Students and teachers of Lamont High School raised money for the athletic department by having a pledged Run for the Bus on May 24.

Money raised goes to help pay for

the operating cost of the bus which takes the students to athletic events.

This year $2,866.35 was raised. Top fund raisers were Mr. Koktailo, Terilyn Nice, Nick Onushko, Mrs. Fossum, Linda Dey and the Nimchuk boys.

Lamont High students were out in full force on May 24, on the streets of Lamont, raising money for their athletics bus.

Red tape delays force Mundare business to relocate, says owner

BY JOHN MATHER Mundare council was briefed, May 22, on the results of the Lamont County Rural Transportation initiative and survey that was conducted throughout last summer and fall.

Judy Schueler , who heads up the Lamont Rural Transportation committee, told the council the committee had been working since late 2016 and was now ready to provide the results of their survey.

In a slide show presentation she told who they were looking out for in doing the survey.

“We joined together as a group in the summer of 2016,” she said.

In the past year 194 respondents said they depended on outside transportation to get to appointments while 191 said they didn’t, which Schueler pointed out was a 50-50 split.

“In addition 84 per cent said they weren’t volunteers drivers,” she said. “I think that number might be a little off, because if I drive my mother somewhere, I don’t consider myself a volunteer driver and I’m sure many respondents felt that way.”

She said when the survey asked if people were interested in becoming a volunteers driver 60 per cent were interested and she got quite a few names and addresses.”

“Because of this number, we have decided to pursue this further,” she said. Seventy-nine per cent of the survey respondents said they could see themselves using additional transportation provided by an outside source in the future as they aged.

“This shows us the need is not only here now,” Schueler said.

“But the need is only going to increase moving forward.”

She said the results show quite a few people needed transportation, because they used the rides for medical appointments, social visits, grocery shopping or

all of the above.

The people traveled throughout the region including Vegreville, Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan and primarily Edmonton.

The survey indicated most people just want transport door to door, she said.

“This tells me we just need a regular vehicle, nothing too fancy,” she said.

While the County had 42 per cent of the respondents living in their houses, Lamont and Bruderheim had 18 per cent of the respondents and Mundare had 12 per cent. Mundare also had seven per cent of the respondents who reported where they lived.

However, she pointed out, 37 per cent didn’t report on where they lived.

“Looking at the aging population and the number of people who want to remain in their homes as they age, we‘re going to go ahead with our committee and move on to the next steps,” she said.

“We’re going to be asking for your help in funding for our volunteers drivers to pay for some of their gas and their meals.”

“In addition we’re putting together a letter to the provincial government stating what their requirements were.”

She said research showed the best thing going forward was to keep the rural residents in their homes.

She said at a recent meeting she was told in the next while, 80 per cent of the population will live between Edmonton and Calgary.

“We have to start looking after our rural residents because if that population demographic becomes true we may start losing our provincial support through tax dollars because we don’t have the population.

Mayor Mike Saric asked Schueler how she was thinking of funding the program.

“Are you looking at a

per rider fee that the town would reimburse?” he asked.

Schueler said they weren’t firm on a funding model yet.

“We’re looking for some funding to get us going and we’re looking for a non-profit group to put the money in.”

She added they would be approaching many of the surrounding industries seeking corporate support as well. She said she’d heard of other organizations in other regions providing similar services put transportation grants received into the program. She wondered whether Mundare received any transportation grants from Lamont County and was told they didn’t.

“Another source of funding could be the municipality’s portion of the federal fuel tax.”

The committee will host an open house, June 6, to solicit volunteers and go through the procedures for becoming a driver, she added. The open house would provide an opportunity to educate potential drivers on insurance coverage and what the committee’s plans were moving ahead.

Schuler said they were hoping to get about $10,000 as a start up amount.

“People will have to pay for the rides, because it can’t be a free service,” she said. “It may wok out to a $5 membership fee or something like that.”

She added they would start trying to source local services as well.

“If you have a medical appointment in Edmonton and need to follow up with, let’s say a dietitian,“ she said.

“Well there are dietitians in the rural communities and they can say the same thing as a dietitian in Edmonton.”

She added if they received the initial $10,000 it could add up to about 150 trips for rural residents.

Council accepted her report as information.

He went on to say the store in Mundare would be permanently closed.

“We’ll be moving at the end of this season,” Glowatsky said. “We got the building just a little too late and now we’re really busy in our peak sales period, so we have to wait.”

The new location will be in the old RJV Welding shop behind Deerland farm implements in Vegreville.

“We wanted to stay in Mundare,” he added.

“We loved this town and the location we had.”

“But it was absolutely impossible to deal with administration and if it was going to be like this every time we wanted to make a change in our business … it just wasn’t worth it.”

He said he doubted moving a little further east to Vegreville would hurt the business.

When the firm had appeared before council they had explained the Mundare location was perfect because it was close enough for people from Sherwood Park, Edmonton and Fort

Saskatchewan to drive out and pick up parts for their RVs. “Moving to Vegreville won’t hurt us,” adds Glowatsky. “There’s only about three RV wreckers in Canada, so people will look us up on the internet and then come out for what services they need.”

Mundare mayor Mike Saric expressed his disappointment the town wasn’t able to keep the business in town.

“It’s regrettable we weren’t able to meet their timelines and keep this business in town,” he said.

Opinion Newspaper readership greater than 2012 - less retail support killing papers A study came out last week which concluded that the state of the Canadian newspaper industry might just not be as bad as originally thought. In fact, a Totum Research survey found that readership of Canadian newspapers is at an all-time high.

Conducted in February of 2019, the survey states that 88 percent of Canadians read a newspaper, in either print or digital form, at least once a week. That’s a three percent increase from the same study conducted in 2012.

Of the 88 percent who read a newspaper weekly, 83 percent of those readers supplement their print readership with digital readership and 52 percent of newspaper readers access content from both digital and print.

As well, the survey was able to determine the type of readership newspapers are invoking. It was clear that newspaper readers like to start the day with the in-depth reporting of a print edition and then stay up to date on the breaking news as the day progresses online.

As for Millennials, still 88 percent of them access information from newspapers but primarily get their content through their mobile phones.

Locally the issue isn’t with readership, it is with local support. Most people think it is important that newspapers cover events and give their function free publicity, but do little to support the newspaper’s ability to do so by providing advertising revenue prior to the event.

The next time you wonder why coverage of a public event was so minor, it is safe for you to also assume those very organizers did little to support the newspaper. News costs money, and advertising is what pays for that news.

Albertans disrespected, living on hope Provincially Albertans may be feeling renewed hope with new Premier Jason Kenney sticking up for the province in ways we have wanted for four long years.

Federally it is a different story.

In a recent report from Environics Institute, 7/10 Albertans feel the province is not given the respect it deserves by the Trudeau Government, and the same amount think it has less than its fair share of influence on confederation. Eight out of 10 Albertans feel the West is ignored in national politics and some 60 percent feel the West gets such few benefits from being part of Canada that they don’t feel they would have much to lose if Alberta separated.

Almost half of Albertans say their household is struggling to make ends meet compared to only 29 percent in 2009; while 6/10 Albertans feel the current economic conditions in the province are the worst in their lifetime.

Premier Kenney has a long row to hoe attempting to restore Alberta’s economic grandeur, considering he is up against likely the worst Prime Minister in Canadian history. As with our excellent spring election results, Albertans rest more hope on the October federal election.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Abortion issue about giving government the power over women’s bodies There are good reasons that people all over the world are furious that some States in the US have started to criminalize abortion. Our fury is not about whether abortion is right or wrong, or at what point a fertilized egg becomes a baby.

The question is whether we give government power over our bodies.

The rationale that saving a life justifies government control of a citizen’s body is extremely dangerous. Let's say that I have a rare type of blood that could save the lives of dozens of people. Should the government be able to force me to provide this blood against my will?

Should the government have the right to take one of your kidneys? After all, you

need only one and it will save a life. If the government has the right to legislate uses of a woman’s body against her will, why not yours?

Why can’t the government use the same justification to take control of your bank account? After all, the integrity of a bank account is not as important as the integrity of your own body, right? Why shouldn’t the government take your life savings if they use it to save lives?

There are other troubling impacts of criminalizing abortion. When we say that a cluster of cells is a baby because it has the potential to become a baby, then: Every woman who suffers a miscarriage should be investigated for manslaughter. Fact::

women are currently imprisoned all over the world for miscarrying.

Physicians should be unable to save women dying from life-threatening pregnancies.

This is also happening, all over the world.

Children and rape victims should have to carry fetuses to term. Right now, in some US states, a man who rapes his nine-year-old daughter would face less jail time than she would if she gets in abortion as a result of that rape.

A man who even suggests abortion should be charged with conspiracy to commit murder. If a woman he knows has an abortion, he should charged as an accomplice.

BY HAZEL ANAKA It’s time to beat the public library drum again. Most communities are lucky enough to have a library. But, as usual there are disparities on access and how much is on offer depending on where in the province you live. I’ve used the joint-use library in Andrew which houses both the school library and the public library, especially during my two stints as a board member. This kind of sharing of space, staff, collections makes so much sense especially in small towns.

I still remember the coup we had with the Michael Mucz author talk. As the author of Baba’s Kitchen Medicines, he was a natural for the area and sold more books here than virtually anywhere else.

It was a lot of work and promotion but it ended up being win-win.

After we bought property in Sherwood Park, I realized that as a taxpayer I could access the library there and in Fort Saskatchewan. I’ve borrowed materials especially audio books or heavy stacks of home décor books for research purposes. I’ve purchased discarded materials.

Lately, I’ve borrowed special interest magazines with varying degrees of usefulness.

With our property now sold, I was glad there was an option to get a TRAC card from my local library to allow me access to these much larger collections.

Helluva a deal with my $5 annual membership!

With it, I could even borrow from Edmonton Public Library.

I’ve also done some writing in the library. I guess I remember the old library days of my youth where silence was golden. I’m shocked at how busy and noisy these places have become.

When I noted that in Sherwood Park, I was told the library is the ‘living room’ of the community. In this living room, you can expect to see a woman knitting, a group of old men shooting the breeze, someone tutoring someone else, teens yakking, others working on a jigsaw puzzle. You may even see someone reading or working on a computer. I guess busy and noisy is better than quiet and empty.

Finally, after years of intending to, I committed to taking advantage of the Writer In Residence (WIR) program. Each year, one or two writers are named to provide service to the communities of Fort Saskatchewan, Sherwood Park, and St.

Glowatsky had left the council meeting feeling certain the council was supportive of his business, which included plans to expand the operations by adding a new shop, and said while they would continue to repair and salvage RVs, they wouldn’t be leaving partially demolished RVs on the site.

This research is reliable and easy to look up, and anybody who is serious about preventing abortion would presumably care enough to do so. We should very wary of the motives of those who

Some politicians want government to take power that no human being should ever have over another. Power corrupts, and the more power citizens hand over to the state, the more corruptible the state can become. Every competent, democratic politician ought to know that.

The ones who don’t are the ones we need to watch very, very carefully.

While, I’m certainly no poet, I hoped I’d benefit anyway. From the camaraderie, the advice, the writing prompts, the intention. From refocusing on writing for pleasure and for my own purposes. So far, it’s been

great. The groups has ranged in size from two to four people. Though we are clearly different people this common interest brings instant rapport and ah-ha recog-

nition to our shared experiences.

Western States Hockey League would like to bring a Junior A team to Bruderheim

BY JANA SEMENIUK At a special Town Council meeting, May 27, Brian Brown and Ron White, from the Western States Hockey League, made a presentation to council in hopes that; not only will council approve their plans to bring a Junior A hockey team to town, but begin moving forward for an October start.

The WSHL is based out of the United States but have been reaching into Canada over the past year, the pair said.

They currently have 26 teams participating in their league with four teams coming from Alberta – Meadowlake, Hinton, Edson, and Cold Lake.

This year, WSHL is looking at adding teams in Slave Lake, Jasper and

Bruderheim.

“We are excited about the opportunity to have teams up here” said Ron White, commissioner with WSHL. “Our basis for having teams anywhere is to bring our expertise in” Players must be at least 15 and a half years old in September and be living at home. Players aged 16 – 20 can be billeted, and a 21-year-old can only play if he is still 20 on December 31.

Councillor Len Falardau expressed concern the local arena would not be large enough to hold a crowd that would make it financially feasible for the team to exist.

White was not concerned with the size of the arena, citing other arenas whose capacity is

much smaller than Bruderheim’s. Once outfitted with standardized seating, the Karol Maschmeyer Arena could seat 350 people.

“You are businessmen and at the end of the day you have to make money” said Falardeau.

Councillor Wayne Olechow was interested in what WSHL would need from the town in order to make the package a reality.

“We need your ice, installed standardized seating, spiritual support and billeted parents,” said Brown Other concerns from council included how sponsorships would be handled, security during games, insurance coverage, beer sales and name recognition.

Brown and White both

explained that sponsorships would happen by way of ice logos and board advertisements, while security could be taken care of by way of local non profit groups who have taken their Pro Serve training. Brown added that they carry twelve million dollars in insurance coverage, and a liquor license can be obtained for beer sales to happen during hockey games.

The name Heartland Comets for the new team was suggested by White and Brown.

Mayor Karl Hauch was not in favour, adding that if Bruderheim were to support such an initiative their name must be prominent in the name of the team.

While time is of the

essence in making this particular decision, council has voted to investigate this opportunity further and bring more concrete informa-

tion to the next council meeting where a decision can be made. The next council meeting is June 5 at 6:15pm.

A pitch was made to Bruderheim town council May 27, to bring a Junior A hockey team to the community. Ron White, left, commissioner of the U.S.-based Western States Hockey League and Brian Brown, a owner of the local franchise, told council, if do-able, they would like to have the franchise established in Bruderheim for the start of the 2019-20 season in October.

Andrew bottle drive exceeds expectations MAUREEN SULLIVAN Members of the Andrew Minor Baseball league hit the streets on Saturday May 25, in search of donations for

their 2019 bottle drive.

They hoped to fill a 24 foot covered trailer, but within two hours it was filled and overflowing.

An additional three

truck boxes full of bottles and a $45 donation rounded out the day.

The bottles were driven out to the Smoky Lake bottle depot, where they

await a tally.

"Bottles are still coming in to the group and will be added to the bottles already at the depot," said Janelle Yaremie,

President of Andrew Minor Baseball "A big thank you to everyone who helped our successful bottle drive. It's very important

to keep the costs down for our players and families to ensure sports stay in the community of Andrew," stated Yaremie.

Crime continues decreasing trend in Mundare MAUREEN SULLIVAN Staff Sargent Terry Hyggen of the Vegreville RCMP detachment attended the Mundare Town Council meeting in April to introduce himself and give a brief summary on last year’s statistics, along with the results of ongoing initiatives.

Overall in the Town of Mundare, persons crimes increased slightly, and property crimes saw a significant decrease, according to Hyggen.

Calls to the RCMP from Mundare were down to a five year low of 231 files. Break and enter calls were down from 20 calls to nine. The 911 Act offenses were down from 14 calls to 10.

False alarms were down from 16 calls to 11. Fraud calls were down from 21 to 17. Mental Health Act calls were down from 12 to nine. Mischief calls

were down from 31 to 19.

Thefts were down from 42 calls to 33. CDSA (drug offenses) were down from five calls to four. Assault and utter threats offenses were up from 16 to 19 calls.

Crime prevention initiatives by the Vegreville detachment in Mundare have increased.

"During the past year Vegreville Detachment has been involved in many community events within Mundare and area.

These events include traffic initiatives, sporting events and participation at ceremonies in red serge," said Hyggen. “As a detachment Commander I believe in keeping our communities informed as much as possible. I support transparency through community consultation, media venues and direct communication."

The School Resource Officer, who visits the school, continues to provide excellent service and there are several new initiatives being implemented this year, including WITS (Walk away, Ignore,Talk it out, Seek help) an anti-bullying initiative, Hyggen went on to say.

Administration, teachers and students feel more connected to police and all the feedback received has been very promising.

Ongoing priorities for the year include police/community relations and police visibility, traffic safety, youth and substance abuse and crime reduction and general property offenses.

"Vegreville Detachment continues to work on some distinct challenges within our communities. The area sees a high ratio of mental health related calls for

service," said Hyggen.

"The challenge of these calls is compounded as there are very little resources for diagnosing and treatment in our detachment area.

Although these are often not criminal in nature, there is frequently no other option for our members than to transport patients to Edmonton or Ponoka."

"The RCMP in Alberta has had significant challenges in recent years, particularly in our small towns and rural areas.

The impact on those we serve is acknowledged and the RCMP has implemented initiatives to combat rural crime," stated Hyggen.

Some of these initiatives are the C.R.U. (Crime Reduction Unit), a unit specifically dedi-

cated to identifying and apprehending high priority offenders. Based out of St. Paul the unit has eight full time regular members, one analyst, and one support clerk.

Project Lockup is a victim focused initiative to bring law enforcement and citizen led crime prevention groups together.

It provides more patrols in the hardest hit places of crime, enhanced victim support and enhanced investigative response.

Internal Crime Map is a virtual map updated daily and includes all property related offenses, for 14 days. It allows RCMP to identify hot spots and potential suspects known to the areas.

Women Rising tackles social media MAUREEN SULLIVAN Women helping women, that is what these Women Rising networking events are about. Building connections between women running businesses and providing learning opportunities to help them grow their business to the next level, according to Roxanne Carr, CEO of Roxx Strategic Management and former Mayor and Councillor for Strathcona County.

Learning the basics of how to create an advertisement on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter was presented by Jennifer Anderson, from Volunteer Strathcona, on May 23, in Bruderheim.

In what was a very interactive workshop, women from the surrounding business community came together to learn the how and whys of advertising using social media. They were instructed on how for little or no cost, to find prospective customers using social media and targeting them by location, gender, age, education and interest.

Bruderheim's Women Rising recently received over $26,000 in provincial funding through the Community and

Regional Economic Support (CARES) program. The group whose vision is to provide support to local women in business was initially a pilot project based out of the Bruderheim Infinity Centre in 2018.

As part of the Alberta Jobs Plan, the Alberta government launched the CARES program in 2016 to promote longterm economic growth and prosperity in Alberta’s communities and regions. The CARES funding will support job creation in the Bruderheim region, enhance the success of local businesses and provide opportunities for lasting partnerships.

Other Women Rising events have focused on marketing and promotion, financing, and marketing and branding.

“Women Rising was started by business women in leadership roles wanting to create a positive mentoring opportunity for women, particularly those in rural businesses” states Carr.

"We've put those women together who own and operate various businesses and they have decided what local women in business and leadership roles need are; opportunities to get together to celebrate, connect and learn with other individuals with a like minded segment," said Carr.

Women Rising, is based off the Wisdom and Opportunities for Women (WOW) program currently running in Bonnyville and Cold Lake.

Priority Response Times, for priority 1 and 2 calls where safety was at risk, the average response time was 20 minutes and 15 seconds.

In 20 per cent of the time, RCMP arrived on the scene in 10 minutes or less. In 80 per cent of the time, RCMP arrived on the scene in 30 minutes or less.

The Call Back Unit was created in 2018 and provides call back services by police officers on non emergency calls. They are located in Edmonton and Calgary. These officers will call complainants as soon as possible to discuss the citizen’s concern and offer possible assistance instead of having to wait until a local member is on duty or is available.

Lamont Fish and Game building and planting for the community MAUREEN SULLIVAN The Lamont Fish and Game Association have been busy this spring attending local events and doing conservation work.

On May 11, three volunteers built 65 birdhouses with kids at the Chipman Fur and Feather event.

"We ran out of nails so we had to end early," said Joan Dey, one of the volunteers.

Volunteers Jim Radke and Doug Butler were out at the Lamont fish pond on May 17 to stock the pond with 2,000 trout. They returned with a work party on May 25, to install four fishing docks. These are in addition to the eight

platforms previously installed.

A general clean up of the pond, done with the volunteers’ efforts as well as the planting of lilac trees also occurred.

A hot dog lunch was supplied to all.

"This will make it easier for our community to enjoy the pond. We have also planted over 200 trees on the site and a couple of dozen song bird houses were installed," said Butler.

Look for Fish and Game volunteers to be out at other local events this spring and summer with their free bird house building for the kids.

Also kids can fish for free at the pond on June 22.

A group of Lamont Fish and Game volunteers came together to install some new docks at the Lamont fish pond on may 25.

Spending a Saturday planting lilacs around the Lamont fish pond are the youth members of Lamont Fish and Game.

Volunteers Jim Radke and Doug Butler stocked the Lamont Fish Pond with 2,000 trout on May 17.

Trudeau government not taking rural crime seriously, says MP Stubbs JOHN MATHER The federal Liberal decision to come out with a mere three-page response to issues of rural crime across the country has left Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs fuming.

Stubbs had introduced a motion in the House of Commons asking the federal committee on Public Safety and National Security examine rural crime in the country with an emphasis on Western Canada.

In a press conference in Edmonton on May 24, she called the Liberal response to rural crime “unconscionable.� “ I hear loud and clear, as I know all my colleagues do, that rural Albertans are very frustrated with the revolving door of repeat offenders, and that’s also related to the lack of front line law enforcement,� she stated. “And that’s why my motion 167 was specifically directed to the public safety committee to work on this limited front line law enforcement.�

She said the St. Paul courthouse in her own Lakeland constituency

had the highest caseload in all of Alberta. She added there are currently 53 vacancies in the Federal crown prosecutors’ offices across the country and this is also part of the problem in the rural crime file.

Many of her constituents she said felt unsafe in their own homes.

The final report was just a two-page summary with no formal call for action, she said, and that showed the federal government didn’t care about rural Canadians or rural Albertans.

She gave several samples of situations where rural landowners found themselves in trouble for defending their property. “The Liberals and their hug a thug, soft on crime approach are going totally in the wrong direction,� she added. “The way they have evaded responsibility and dismissed the real work called on them in my motion shows they aren’t concerned about rural Canadians. They are doing the exact opposite of protecting rural Canadians.�

Cor DeWit, president of the Alberta Rural Crime Watch Association, applauded Stubbs’ efforts. “We know rural crime rates are on the rise and the public is becoming more and more concerned,� he said. “This can be seen in the number of people showing more interest in our organization.� “The public isn’t feeling safe in rural areas,� he added. “Response time is slow and unacceptable.

In most cases several hours can elapse before a police officer shows up at a crime scene.�

He said while the RCMP have made some headway with their rural crime reduction units, there is still much to do to get crime below the 2014 levels.

Murray Phillips a Two Hills County councilor told the crowd about rural crime in his area, which is served by the Two Hills RCMP Detachment, the same detachment that covers the Andrew area of Lamont County. “Crime in our region has skyrocketed in the last two years,â€? he said. “The Elk Point area is ranked number one in the province for rural crime.â€? “People are angry‌ they’re feeling violated and the ready to react,â€? he said. “Our local businesses are being vandalized time and time again.

He said there were five RCMP officers in Two Hills who cover 3,500 square kilometres. The

Lamont council gets primer on Epcor bio-solids

By John Mather Epcor representatives attended Lamont County Council May 14 to give councillors an overview on the corporation’s Nutri Gold bio-solids program as it applies to the County.

Diedre Bartlett, field manager for the biosolids program was accompanied at the presentation by Dave Curran, manager of the nurtri-gold program.

Nutri Gold takes the bio-solid from Edmonton’s Gold Bar Waste Water treatment plant and the Capital Regional waste water treatment plant in Strathcona County and tranports them to farm fields and distributes them on the soil in the form of either solids or liquids.

The bio-solids are rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter with trace amount of metal and organic compounds.

“Any municipality with a waste water treatment system will have bio-solids,” said Curran.

“If it is used in the proper manner it is a very good product for the soils you grow crops on.”

“It does have a little bit of heavy metals but that is regulated to ensure it causes no concerns. It does ensure soil fertility.”

He added it brings back a lot of organic materials to the soil and helps with some carbon sequestration.

“We’ve been operating this program since 1978 and it is run under provincial legislation.”

Landowner permission is needed prior to application and soil samples are taken to ensure the nutri-gold application will be beneficial to

the land. It must also be kept away from water courses and houses as per provincially established set backs.

“It works when the farmer expresses interest in the product,” said Barlett. “And then a land screening takes place.”

“Is it a suitable land location, what are you going to be farming, can we get to your land and what are the roads like,” she said. “The soil testing lets us qualify the land under the provincial regulations.”

“About 160 acres can cost up to $3,000 to $5,000 for soil tests, but this is free to the farmers.

This allows us to know whether the application is good for the land.”

She said if an application can been done there is much planning that has to be done to allow an application to take place.

If it passes she added, what she referred to as “the real dog and pony show” starts.

“Essentially we have to co-ordinate the roads, the crop schedule, the farmer’s needs, and the weather has to be right,” she said. “And this has to be done by November and hope for no early fall snowfalls.”

She said snow early last fall really affected the progress.

After, the application reports are then given to the province.

She added the program is free to the farmer because it is a beneficial reuse of bio-solids.

Tanker trucks spread the liquid bio-solids to a designated applications area. She added the area for application is staked out and the amount of materials is calculated

for proper application and then the truck drives between the staked out areas for the application.

Dewatered bio-solids spreading is the same as the thickened liquid program but the water is removed. There is less impact on the roads using the dewatered method.

She said the program operates on available lands up to 120 kms outside of Edmonton. The bio-solids for the most part come from the Clover Bar Treatment plant of Edmonton Gold Bar. Under the program Epcor enters into road agreements with the municipalities they work in. Last year, that included Leduc, Strathcona, Sturgeon County and Lamont.

She said 200 sites were tested for the program last year and 90 failed.

“The nature of the program means it’s hard to find available sites sometimes,” said Bartlett.

“We’re definitely committed to doing the right thing and last year we spent almost $300,000 on road work primarily in Lamont County.”

She showed a chart that demonstrated Epcor’s annual maintenance costs on the roads it serviced.

She added in some cases local road crews do the maintenance and Epcor is quite prepared to partner with the municipalities in covering some costs of road maintenance. She added they work with the farmers to schedule the applications.

An application can also only be made for every three crop rotations.

Bartlett said while most sites should be about 40 acres minimum, Epcor will go wherever the land meets the criteria.

She told council they were currently spreading in the Andrew area.

When asked how long after the application farmers could work the

land, Bartlett replied with a liquid application farmers could be on the field a few days later.
