Jackie Lovely’s Election watch party was held Monday night at the Camrose Boston Pizza for her campaign supporters. Tensions were high as individuals joined together, watching the poll results come in. Over 60 people were in attendance at the event. Cheers erupted at the declaration Lovely’s win with only 12 of the 25 polls being counted. Lovely gave a speech thanking those who helped in any way possible to end the night.

Alberta Agriculture reports that significant seeding progression continued through much of last week, with minor disruptions due to rain.

“Observers report provincial seeding progress as of May 23 at 85 per cent of all major crops seeded, ahead of the five-year average of 80 per cent, and 10-year average of 82 per cent.”

The May 23 crop report says that all regions of the

province reported rapid emergence of major crops, with a provincial average of 47 per cent, well above a five-year average of 32 per cent. Regionally, the central zone is reporting 45 per cent emergence.

Central and North East regions describe only scattered showers in the area, while other regions report significant rainfall.

Surface soil moisture levels are reported poor to good in the and North East regions, with pasture growth also rated

poor to fair.

In the North East Region (Smoky Lake, Vermilion, Camrose, Provost) fall seeded crop conditions are currently 17 per cent poor, 24 per cent fair, and 59 per cent good, with none rated excellent.

Sub-surface soil moisture conditions (below six inches) are currently rated 18 per cent poor, 42 per cent fair, and 41 per cent good, with none rated as excellent or excessive.

Organizers of the annual Lougheed Fair have been meeting since the fall, making sure that the 100th celebration of this year’s Fair meets all expectations and more.

The Fair Book has been sent out and features many special prizes to celebrate the centennial

anniversary, as well as a new category “Display of Vintage Entries from past fairs.” This can include sewing articles, handicraft articles, and photos of previous displays.

Organizers are busy planning the traditional events that take place and adding new ones to make this year’s event extra special.

Anyone interested in

volunteering on the day, or entering an exhibit, ball team, or the cattle and horse show should get in touch with an Ag. Society member.

Camrose MLA Lovely celebrates re-election John Mather Staff Reporter

In an Alberta election that seemed to drag on for as long as results merely trickled in from Elections Alberta, Camrose constituency quickly had UCP candidate Jackie Lovely declared the winner.

Lovely was declared by shortly after 10 p.m. when polling showed her leading NDP candidate Richard Bruneau 12,575 votes to 5,545 with 23 of 25 polls reporting.

Lovely was first elected to the Legislature in the 2019 election.

She has served as a Parliamentary Secretary, Associate Minister for the Status of Women, on Premier’s Council on Charities and Civil Societies, on the Public Accounts Committee and was chair of the Standing Committee on Families and Communities.

“I’m just so grateful to all the people who stepped up to help with the campaign,” said Lovely shortly after being declared the winner.

“And I really want to thank the voters for their confidence and support.”

“I look forward to continuing the work I’ve started,” she said.

“Everyone says you need a second term. The first term you figure out what needs to be done because you talk the people and then figure out who to talk to find the solutions. And then you need the second term to implement the solutions.”

“I’ve found that to be very true.”

Lovely said she had lots of support throughout the various communities in the constituencies and that she wanted to “offer my opponents well.”

“We said we were going to run a clean campaign and we did that,” she said.

Locally, Lovely said

she was concerned about the fate of the Camrose Casino and also seeing a more equitable split for rural charities working casinos.

“I think they’re under way with the process,” she said.

“I need to check and see where we’re at with the process. I have decided I need to roll up my sleeves and get in-

volved. I strongly believe the rural charities should be receiving equal treatment to the urban charities when it comes to their shares coming from working at a casino.”

Lovely said UCP Leader Danielle Smith had quickly been on the phone to congratulate her on her win, Monday night.

“I doorknocked for 14 other campaigns during this election,” added Lovely. “I worked down in Calgary and in Edmonton. I also doorknocked for the leader when she ran in her byelection. It’s nice when she recognizes the hard work.”

Lovely said she was optimistic about the provincial campaign.

3rd-annual Hardisty Trail Run planned for June 17

Brittany MacMillan is busy organizing and sponsoring, through BAM Fitness, the third annual Hardisty Trail Run 2023.

She says she has 49 registrants for the event, which features a 10km run, a 5k run, a 5k walk, and a 2k walk for kids.

The event is now part of a series, as she’s partnered with the Wainwright Runners, hosts of the Bison Run, held in April, and the Bison Dash, held in the fall.

Hardisty’s Trail Run will be race number two in the series. Entrants in all three will receive a special medallion at the end of the Dash in the fall.

Each participant in the Trail Run will receive some swag, including a free race t-shirt or tank top featuring the race logo, if they signed up before May 24.

MacMillan says she’d love to beat the 2021 record of 61 racers, so she’s hoping that she can get at least 12 more participants signed up to go.

The routes are a mix of trail and road as participants will use the new trails and take a scenic route through the Hardisty Lake Park campground.

The 5k walk and run course includes old and new parts of the trails system, where participants will enjoy scenic views of the Hardisty Battle River valley.

The start line is behind Gibson Centre, with parking available at the arena.

MacMillan has posted videos of both the 10k and 5k routes on the event’s Facebook page “Hardisty Trail Run (2023).”

On Saturday, the Battle River Art Club hosted their annual show and sale at the Community Hall. Those in attendance were treated to a delicious lunch, an art station for kids, and of course artwork.

The variety of both subject matter and media used by our talented local artists, who range in age from kindergarten to senior citizen, is astonishing. Congratulations on yet another successful show!

Building Blocks Family Literacy Program has wrapped up for another year. Flagstaff Adult Learning offers this free program to families with preschoolers in communities across the county, but our nearest group meets at the Lougheed Library.

Children and caregivers sing songs, read books, learn action rhymes, and participate in all kinds of fun activities to encourage the development of early literacy skills and kindergarten preparedness.

While everyone is looking forward to the summer break, the youngsters can’t wait to get back at it after Thanksgiving!

‘Tis the season for fundraiser barbeques. Last Friday, the Credit Union hosted such an event in aide of the Flagstaff branch of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. There was a great turnout on a beautiful day. How wonderful to see such community support for this organization which provides free books to the littlest folks in our county.

This Saturday, The Flagstaff Scottish Club will happily barbeque lunch for you at the Killam Co-op.

The club is hard at work on this year’s Gathering of the Clans Highland Festival, to be held on August 19, and is always ready to receive volunteers.

Planning is also underway for this summer’s Movie in the Park organized by Parents for Fun in Flagstaff.

Hardisty will host The Super Mario Bros. Movie!

Mark your calendar for Aug. 22 and keep your eyes on the paper for details in the coming months.

Back in April, Parents for

Fun organized a terrific county-wide scavenger hunt which took participants from Daysland to Hardisty, Killam to Galahad, Alliance, and all the communities in between.

Scavengers visited two or three communities per week, picking up a surprise at each stop.

Prizes included flower seed planting kits, railway safety booklets, sets of scavenger hunt bingo cards, and many, many books.

A great deal of work

went into organizing the hunt, and many community organizations contributed items to the prize packages. Thank you to each of them!

It’s always fun to travel to different parts of the county and check out what the communities have to offer, whether it be a giant turtle in Killam, a gallant knight in Galahad, or the dog park right here in Sedgewick.

While not an official scavenger hunt stop, it was certainly worth taking a

few minutes to enjoy the wind-powered creations at Serenity Spinners in Alliance. An imaginative mind and skilled hands can produce amazing things!

Next week’s Sedgewick News will once again be in the capable hands of Sandra, freshly returned from what appears to have been a most marvelous trip to Germany. We’ll look forward to hearing about her adventures in that country.

Celebrating Rural Healthcare Week by honouring local heroes Leslie Cholowsky Editor

May 29 to June 2 is Alberta Rural Health Week, and to celebrate, the Flagstaff Healthcare Attraction and Retention Committee (FIHAR) has created four videos featuring and celebrating our local healthcare providers and centres.

The videos will be rolled out consecutively by Flagstaff County, with the first having been released Tuesday, May 30, featuring the Daysland Health Centre, with Killam Health Care released Wednesday, May 31, then Galahad Care Centre Thursday, June 1, and Hardisty Health Centre on Friday, June 2.

The Committee says, “During the past few years, the Flagstaff Region has experienced a steady decline in healthcare professionals. This has resulted in a negative impact within our region, as we have experienced temporary closures of facilities and emergency rooms, resulting in gaps in services and limitations on healthcare access for rural residents, as well as an overall struggle in attracting healthcare professionals to live and work in our rural region.

“As a community, we have decided to be initiative-taking in attracting sufficient healthcare professionals for the health and sustainability of our

rural communities.

“The FIHAR Committee is a remarkably diverse group that includes elected officials, representatives from our healthcare facilities, foundation members, community social groups, and members at large.”

The committee decided that Rural Health Week presented a terrific opportunity to honour the contributions of rural health-care providers and community volunteers “who help keep health care close to home.”

Each video comes with a message.

Talking to a Flagstaff Waste Recycling Superhero in Killam Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Brenda Grove of Killam is someone who Flagstaff Waste would say is a Recycling Superhero. She says it comes from a program started at Lougheed School that resonated with her family and that has led to decades of recycling.

Flagstaff Waste is trying to talk to people who are dedicated to recycling to try and understand how to motivate people who aren’t presently recycling.

Grove says, “No one is a perfect recycler. There are times when convenience wins out, that’s true for everyone.”

In her case, what put her on a road to becoming a recycler came from Lougheed School, a dozen years ago.

“Miss Kueber decided that she was starting a Recycling Club in Lougheed.

She took the kids on a field trip to Waste Management. They toured the facility, and had some conversations over what goes where, and what can be recycled.

“The kids went back to the school and made a plan.”

She says older students started making crafts using the recycled materials.

Their whole school recycled. “Their endof-the-year field trip was to the recycling and waste management in Edmonton.

They got to see what they could do within our own area and then they got to go Edmonton to see it on a bigger scale.

“Those kids came home and they went through their school supplies; they reused, they put things in containers and packed them away for the next year.”

Prior to that, she says, “We lived on the farm; everything went into the dumpster.

“We now have containers for pop cans, we have square blue bins with notes on them. I have newspaper, tin, and two for cardboard.

“When we started doing that, including the plastics, my family of five went down to one bag of garbage per week.

One bag.”

The Groves were ahead of the ‘noplastic bags curve.’ While grocery shopping, she always took her reusable bags, along with special fruit mesh bags, and put things in there. “When I had to use the plastic bags, I donated them back to Twice Nice.”

She shops from a list so she has less food waste. She goes through her refrigerator once a week and freezes or blanches and freezes fruits and vegetables for shakes or desserts, or to resteam and use in another meal.

“I’m not going to lie. My vice is ziplock bags.” She tries to reuse them as much as she can, though, she adds.

“Food cardboard, shiny paper, those types of things are in my garbage.” She reuses her dishwasher pod plastic bin for bacon grease, because she finds that it cycles nicely, as the old one gets full, the new one is ready to go. She says it’s perfect, because the lid snaps down, and she can’t smell the stored oil.

School was her initial motivation, but she continues to recycle everything today because: “To be honest, at this point, we’ve done it for so long it’s a habit. It’s just become a habit because we do it. When you eat the last ice cream bar out of the box, you flatten it and toss it in the recycling. You just do it.

“We started 12 years ago at the school, and we brought it with us to Killam. It was just habit. My tin cans and plastics get washed and go in the bin.”

What’s the reward? Repurposing is part of it. She is part of the Flagstaff Players group, and has repurposed many thinks into props and even decor.

“I try to reuse as much as I can.”

She doesn’t mind putting glass containers in the garbage. “The reason for that is that by having the glass in the bags, it actually helps break up the bags in the landfill. She also marks bags with glass with a piece of tape she writes on, especially if it is broken glass. “It takes me two seconds to tape and mark it. I don’t want a Flagstaff Waste worker to cut themselves.”

She rejects the idea that recycling creates hoarding. She says sorting them as they are used, and having a dedicated place for recycling helps keep things uncluttered.

She says she thinks other people don’t recycle because they think it’s inconvenient, or takes up too much time, but for her, it’s incidental to her routine. “It’s just what we do. It all started with one amazing teacher.”

Grove has also tried to bring recycling into her workplaces wherever possible.

From her time on Killam Town Council, and on the Flagstaff Waste Board, Grove became aware of the lack of recycling in the region; only 35 per cent of the county recycles.

She says sometimes teaching others to recycle is just about showing them how to do it, and how simple it is. “You have to take your garbage to the garage; why not take your cardboard to the garage?

“If you’re taking your garbage out, why not your paper? It’s that easy.”

She keeps her bottle recycling in a separate box; she knows when it’s full that’s $50.

She’s thought about what Flagstaff Waste could do better to pique more interest in recycling. “I thought about bringing my garbage in to one public works barbeque, so people could see what recycling-ready looks like.” She thinks people don’t realize what all can be recycled, or they forget that Flagstaff Waste has a recycling program.

“Starting in the schools was a good idea. They were taught how simple it is.”

She wouldn’t be surprised to hear that Lougheed parents made up a good portion of those who do recycle in Flagstaff Waste. “Having that impetus and having the kids so involved was the key.”

She also learned through her time on the Flagstaff Waste Board how things like recycling were able to extend the life of the landfill, first hand.

“There’s a solid message there, but nobody knows it,” adds Murray Hampshire, Flagstaff Waste Manager.

Grove says purchasing a compactor while she was on the board had a significant difference to space, the point being that Flagstaff Waste’s landfill has a finite amount left. She thinks it’s important for residents to understand that everything they can keep out of their weekly garbage extends the time left out at the landfill.

Increasing the number of recyclers from 35 per cent of residents to even 50 per cent would have a significant impact.

“To see how recycling even over the six years I was on the board helped to extend the life of the landfill; that was eye-opening. It made me understand that there’s more we could do.

“In my six years, we added two, and then four years to the lifespan of the landfill.”

Hampshire says, “We’ve told this story over and over; my board understands it, but sometimes I think that’s where it stops.”

Grove thinks that most of Flagstaff’s municipal Councils understand they are a part-owner of Flagstaff Waste, but she’s not sure that extends out into the community. “If we need a new landfill, the money has to come from somewhere.”

She adds, “To be on the board to see the impact that recycling made was something special.”

Grove says people don’t have to go out and purchase expensive recycling stations. “Just buy some blue bins, mark them, and make your own.” Even if that’s not their purpose, you can use them for recycling.

Hampshire says that by having separate bins, the recycling market for cardboard, tin, paper, newsprint, and plastic, is premium, because it’s presorted, and clean. “We’ve got 1,000 people doing that for us, our recyclers.”

He adds, “We get lots out of our recycling programs. It’s saves landfill space, there is some revenue from it. It certainly pays for the program.”

ing other people’s recycling.”

She doesn’t want to see towns and villages lose their recycling bins from Flagstaff Waste because they became unsightly due to people leaving bags of garbage beside bins.

Hampshire says that packaging is changing, through programs like Extended Producer Responsibility.

“There is a better way, and it’s coming.”

There are things that are being reused throughout the community that there’s no official program for; things like cardboard egg cartons. Hampshire says he would be amenable to adding information about people who want different items on the Flagstaff Waste website, for instance egg cartons.

Grove says she even recycles clothing to make rags.

Hampshire wants to make a connection to what Grove is doing and why she’s doing it. But he wants to know what motivates her.

She says it’s because it’s more efficient for her. “Because I’m mindful of how things are packaged, I don’t always buy something if the packaging isn’t recyclable. My garbage doesn’t stink. I’m not trying to figure out how I can make my fifth white bag fit into my four allowed bags of waste each week. I don’t have to worry about it. So it’s more efficient for me, as I’m going through my life.

“Less garbage is easier. I’m not throwing away as much stuff because I’m reusing it. I’m not wasting my money or my time.”

She acknowledges that developing recycling habits takes time, and mindfullness, but thinks that it’s completely worth it. “Sometimes people think recycling is not convenient; but they are stockpiling their garbage, and having to deal with that every week.”

Grove works full time, and she says recycling is a whole-family responsibility.

“It’s not her running after her family to recycle their refuse, it’s everyone using the recycling stations she has set up versus throwing things away.

She loves finding a purpose for things instead of having to throw them away and to inspire people by reusing simple items and creating something else.

Battle River Art Club showcases local talent of all ages Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Battle River Art Club held their annual show and sale at the Sedgewick Community Hall on Saturday, May 27, where a variety of local artists showed off their artistic talents.

The show is an opportunity for club members to display works they’ve completed over the season, and this year’s array of artworks did not disappoint.

On display was a diverse array of subject matter and mediums, of colours and black and white, and some amazing textured pieces.

Club members were on hand to act as hosts, and enjoy lots of compliments on their work.

The Battle River Art Club Show and Sale on Saturday featured an incredible array of subjects and mediums, showcasing the talents of local artists.

Do-More Ag champions mental wellbeing in agriculture industry Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Do-More Ag is a charity organization whose focus in on mental health in agriculture across Canada.

They say, “We are champions for the mental wellbeing of those in the Canadian agriculture industry and are changing the culture of Agriculture to one where all are encouraged, supported, and empowered to take care of their mental wellbeing.

“Agriculture is an industry with a foundation of deep rural roots, hard work, resilience, strength, and community. In order to uphold that image, those traits can also be the industry’s weakness as they become barriers for speaking up and seeking help. Those in the Canadian agriculture industry are among the most vulnerable when it comes to mental health issues. Stress, anxiety, depression, emotional exhaustion, and burnout are all high in the industry.”

The organization rolled out it’s Talk It Out campaign this month, designed to raise awareness about the importance of talking it out regarding mental health in agriculture.

“The campaign addresses the stressors those in agriculture face, such as weather uncertainty, market instability, and financial pressures.”

The organization says, “These stressors can take a toll on our mental health, leading to chronic stress, burnout, anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.

“However, Do More Ag believes that no one needs to face these challenges alone.”

The 2023 campaign, called #TalkItOut, aims to encourage conversations about mental health in the agriculture industry, promote resources and support for those struggling with mental health challenges, and help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.

The #TalkItOut video series shares information

and lived experiences on mental health topics each month, via interview with individuals, support people, as well as mental health professionals.

At the end of each

month, a live #TalkItOut conversation is held on Instagram and Facebook, facilitated by a mental health professional.

The last Wednesday of each month an Instagram

Liv, and Twitter Live session is held, where one can choose to actively participate, or just sit back and listen.

May’s topic is “Getting

Student mock election has different outcome Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Grade 12 student Rylee Zimmel casts her ballot in the Student Vote at Daysland School.

Three Flagstaff schools participated in the Student Vote for the provincial election; Forestburg School, CHSPS, and Daysland School.

Over the province, 1,097 schools participated, with 170,079 votes, in all 87 electoral districts in Alberta.

Provincially, students elected the NDP to 47 seats, forming a majority government, with the UCP close behind at 39 seats. No other parties won seats, however the Green Party received 6.6 per cent of the total vote, the Alberta Party received 2.3 per cent of the vote, and the Solidarity Movement of Alberta also received 2.3 per cent of the vote.

Students in the Camrose electoral district, which included participation from 14 schools, saw Jackie Lovely retain her seat, with 46.54 per cent of the popular vote, with NDP candidate Richard Bruneau receiving 31.59 per cent. Independent Bob Blayone scored 17.52 per cent, and Pamela Henson of the Wildrose Loyalty Coalition received 4.34 per cent.

In a school-by-school breakdown, CHSPS (Central High Sedgewick Public School) saw incumbent Jackie Lovely win with 70.35 per cent of the vote, with Richard Bruneau (NDP) and Bob Blayone (Independent) receiving 13.95 per cent and 12.79 per cent respectively.

Daysland School also re-elected Lovely, with a smaller margin; she earned just 48.21 per cent, with Bruneau gaining 25 per cent, and Blayone 19.64 per cent. Henson did her best in Daysland, with 7.14 per cent.

Forestburg School re-elected Lovely by a large majority, a whopping 71.43 per cent, with Bruneau coming third, at 10.71 per cent, and Blayone gaining 17.86 per cent, while Henson received no votes.

Flagstaff students closely mirrored the actual election results.

County to take over grounds maintenance at Diplomat Mine Museum Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Diplomat Mine Museum Society made a special request to Flagstaff County Council, presented at the Wednesday, May 24, regular meeting.

The Society operates a mining equipment heritage and interpretive site near the Diplomat Trout Pond, where Flagstaff County maintains the campground.

The Society says, “Since the interpretive sites’ creation, many local area residents as well as visitors from afar have tour the site and marvelled at the equipment that has been preserved for the enjoyment and education of visitors and residents exploring the Flagstaff area.”

The Society says that until recently,

Alberta Parks assisted with maintenance at the site, while the equipment is maintained by the society.

When the site was formed, the Alberta Parks Ministry indicated that maintenance would be provided “in perpetuity” with that at Big Knife Provincial Park, however the Society says that a change to the Province’s approach to Big Knife Park meant that assistance to the Diplomat Mine Interpretive Site would no longer be forthcoming.

That prompted the Society to turn to Flagstaff County to consider adding general park maintenance within the scope of the services done at the Diplomat Trout Pond. This includes grass mowing, garbage removal, and bathroom cleaning and maintenance, while

the Society will remain responsible for all equipment on the site.

Council heard that the maintenance being requested would add approximately $22,000 to the parks budget, because it would require additional personnel in order to retain the present level of service to existing parks and hamlets.

Council approved the recommendation to provide general park maintenance services, and to increase the parks budget by an additional $22,000, recognizing that this is a tourism site that preserves the mining heritage of the Flagstaff Community.

It also aligns with Council’s strategic plan through collaboration with nonprofit organizations in the delivery of programs and services.

Well hello folks. I had decided to retire from writing the Hardisty news, but I was unable to find a replacement writer.

Everyone is so busy nowadays and finds it hard to make a concrete commitment.

The Community Press will allow me to send in news, even if it is only a couple times a month. I just received a text and phone call, so I am excited to share some news with all of you.

Tammy Parkin is very proud to announce that two of her children have recently graduated from post secondary education centres.

Son, Avery Parkin completed a diploma in architectural animation technology.

I had to look up what this diploma entails, so I looked on the Lethbridge College site.

This diploma teaches you to take an idea for a space and create it virtually to ensure it is up to code and beyond client expectations before construction begins.

You learn to communicate spatial ideas and basic construction visualization techniques to a variety of industries, including architecture, interior design, and digital environments. In other words you better know your way around a computer. So congratulations young man!

Daughter, Samantha Parkin, graduated with an extensive degree in Ecosystem Management.

I looked up on Google what this degree entails and it is managing and restoring our ecosystems.

This is crucial because we depend on them to live because they provide us with food and water.

This knowledge tries to limit the harmful effects to our environments.

Think of the variety of pollutants, the weather changes, global warming, the floods, the fires, and etcetera. Our world is

changing and our populations are increasing, so we need educated people to help us all survive.

Congratulations Samantha on all your hard work!

I see that Heather Donald is home from university and helping out in the doctor's office in Hardisty.

Good for you Heather.

Heather Donald and Samantha Parkin both were library assistants at our local Hardisty library.

Maybe being around all those books encouraged them to achieve higher education?

Brad and Shawna Younger, Uncle James, and daughter Phoenix of Hardisty, and Ron and Rosemary Weeks of Killam hosted a fabulous baby shower. It was not your usual, old fashioned shower, but called a "Meet and Greet shower."

Men and women and children were all invited to celebrate the birth of Jeff and Alison (Younger) Weeks' new baby boy.

Sweet baby Walker was the highlight of the afternoon. Mom had just fed him so he was relaxed and happy as he was passed around for everyone to admire and snuggle. I had never met the dad and when I held the baby I noticed what lovely long legs he had.

Well, guess who he inherited them from, Daddy Weeks? He is a tall handsome dude with a lovely beard, so there is good genetics and of course a petite pretty Mommy.

Usually the mom opens all the baby gifts, but not this time. Big daddy opened every gift and ensured that the visitors all had a good view of the multitude of gifts.

Some talented person had even manufactured a jeep made out of diapers, socks, mittens, and it looked like bottles were the jeep headlights. It was more intricate than I am describing, but what an imagination, wow!

The amount of food to enjoy was amazing and they even had a "junk food salad" for kids. It consisted of a carb fest

made of cheezies, assorted gummy bears, party mix, and jube jubes, not an ounce of green salad. The shower was well attended and a big hit.

Cathy Crone informed me that the Sedgewick class of 1983 (they are all around 58 years young) celebrated their 40-year high school reunion at the Hardisty Rodeo grounds. They had a great time with lots of fun and reminiscing. Con-

gratulations to all of you.

Our postal employee, Penny Wurz, is celebrating another decade on Tuesday. So Hardisty patrons be sure to wish her a Happy Birthday. I am sure she will be thrilled to receive your well wishes.

A local farmers wife east of town informed me that they found one of their calves killed on their farm.

All that was left was the head of the calf, the rest was all devoured.

She figured it was not a cougar kill because they drag their kill and hide it under brush.

They figured that it was the bear that had been sighted by Blue's and Bennefeld's old farm.

Kind of creepy eh?

On that note, enjoy your spring and pray that we don't get a last frost.

It was the wee hours of the morning on May 30, but when the count was finally concluded Danielle Smith and the United Conservative Party had racked up a narrow majority government win over Rachel Notley and the NDP. With ridings flipping back and forth between the two parties for most of the night, the final count was 48 seats for the UCP while Notley and the NDP grew the official opposition to 39 seats.

“To paraphrase our friend Ralph Klein, ‘Welcome to another Miracle on the Prairies’,” Smith bellowed over a raucous crowd at her Calgary victory party. “We faced the most expensive, fierce, and co-ordinated opposition and third party political campaign in provincial history.

“Many folks wrote us off as recently as last month, but folks chose a move our province forward by reelecting a strong, stable majority government.”

She thanked all candidates regard-

less of whether they ran for the UCP or any other party.

Smith easily held on to her own seat in Brooks Medicine Hat, where she was up against Alberta Party leader Barry Morishita, who finished a distant third behind the NDP candidate.

In fact the Alberta Party, which ran a limited number of candidates hoping for a breakthrough, was thoroughly decimated as this was strictly a two-horse race throughout the night.

“The election is now over,” continued Smith. “It is time to put aside partisanship, division, personal and political attacks in the rearview mirror. It’s time to move forward as all Albertans no matter who we voted for.”

In mentioning the NDP leader had called to concede the election Smith stated she believed Rachel Notley was a loyal Albertan who truly cares about the province.

Speaking to Albertans who hadn’t cast a vote for the UCP, Smith said, “I want you to know that my mandate is to work for all Albertans no

matter how you voted.”

“I will work everyday to demonstrate to you that I can be trusted to work to improve on the issues that are important to you.”

She said she wasn’t perfect but if she heard about concerns she could then work to improve on them.

Smith did take a swipe at the Justin Trudeau Liberals and stated she was fully prepared to stand up to him and Federal policies designed to harm Alberta.

In her concession speech, Rachel Notley said she had mixed emotions about the results.

“I feel tremendous pride for those people who offered their support to building a better future for Alberta,” she stated. “As a movement we have grown our support in every corner of this province.”

“We’re deeply disappointed in the overall result,” Notley added.

“To those who offered their support you are the reason we fight for what we believe in.”

She said she had been inspired by

the candidates who had run for her party whether they either won or lost.

Notley too said it was time to set aside the partisanship and bickering that had been featured throughout the election.

“Where we fell short,” she added.

“The responsibility lies entirely with me.”

“Now is not the time to let up,” she continued.”It’s the time to step up.”

Notley said it was an honour to serve as the leader and a privilege to serve as the Leader of the Opposition.

“We will have a say in the future of this great province,” she said.

She concluded saying if her party had won it was her position to move past the divisions, and to govern for the vast majority of Albertans.

In Edmonton, the entire complement of 20 ridings went to the NDP with Deputy UCP leader Kaycee Madu losing his lone UCP seat in Edmonton Southwest constituency.

Flagstaff County Council receives public survey results Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff County Assistant CAO Jim Fedyk presented the summary of the public consultation campaign that was recently completed at the regular meeting of Council on Wednesday, May 24.

This year's public consultation included a survey, advertised online and in the newspaper, which received 240 replies, an online priority survey, and a brainstorm board to present ideas to Council.

Fedyk says that Council was pleased overall, “and mentioned that it is the best response to public engagement that we have ever seen.”

Council will need some time to review the summary in depth, then will use the information gathered to guide them as they set their priorities for 2024, he says.

“I can't say that collectively they were surprised by the results, but overall I think the results tell them that they are on track.”

Surveys were completed by a wide range of people, spread between ages 25 to over 65 and the majority of respondents have made Flagstaff County their homes for over a decade, with 10.9 per cent indicating one to five years, 10.5 per cent indicating six to 10 years.

A small percentage of respondents indicated they'd lived here less than one year.

An outstanding 46 per cent of respondents indicated that they had used campgrounds, with just 10 per cent using Peace Officer/Bylaw Services.

Flagstaff Waste had the highest percentage of use, at 60 per cent.

The survey asked respondents to think about department funding, asking if specific departments should decrease, maintain, or enhance existing services.

For Public Works, 62.9 per cent thought that the current level of service should be maintained, with 32.5 per cent wanting to enhance the level of service. Of those wanting to increase service levels, only 12 per cent were willing to pay more taxes.

The remainder wanted either no tax changes (46.4 per cent) or wanted the funding to come by decreasing services in other areas.

Flagstaff County's support of community service programs was generally supported by respondents, with only 9.2 per cent in favour of decreasing funding, and 18.8 per cent in favour of increasing funding. Surprisingly, 22.5 per cent of those in favour of increasing funding were also in favour of a tax increase to do it.

The Agricultural Service Board received one of the highest satisfaction ratings in terms of service levels, with a 77.5 per cent response suggesting current levels be maintained.

Economic Development had nearly 80 per cent of respondents who either said maintain the current level of service (61.1 per cent) or enhance the level of service (18.8 per cent); 20.1 per cent were in favour of decreasing service levels.

Recreation funding levels had over 90 per cent of respondents either in favour of maintaining current funding (70.8 per cent) or increasing it (21.3 per cent). Of those who were in favour of increasing funding, more than a quarter of them were willing to pay more tax to do it.

A majority of those who responded said they are satisfied with the present level of service provided by the County's Peace Officers, but of those who weren't satisfied, there was a fairly even split between enhancing service levels and decreasing service levels.

Flagstaff County Council also asked about potentially decreasing the overall number of councillors, from seven to five. Only 41.2 per cent supported the change, with 34.9 per cent saying “No.” Almost one quarter of the responses weren't sure or didn't know.

Satisfaction of the tax portion paid to municipal services was varied, with nearly 75 per cent rating it at very good, and good to fair. Those unsatisfied sit at just 17.5 per cent, while around 8 per cent didn't know or weren't sure.

One question asked respondents to rank Councils' performance as a whole. On a scale from one (poor) to 10 (excellent), the highest number of respondents rated Council right in the middle, with another 52 per cent rating them from six to eight.

Over eight per cent rated Council at a nine and 10.

The online Priorities Surveys had fewer responses. In this section, Flagstaff residents were asked to prioritize projects in each major department.

Roads were a priority for the 50 people who responded to the Public Works Priority Survey. Road maintenance, the gravel program, and road recovery and rehab were the top three programs.

Protecting county infrastructure, patrol services, and community safety programs were all high priorities identified for Peace Officers and Emergency Management, with emergency management close behind.

For the Communications Department, priority was given by the 24 respondents to the county

website and its social media, which were tied for the top two.

The Ag Service Board priorities, among the 27 people who responded, were roadside vegetation management, and the shelterbelt establishment program, with parks close behind. Conservation programs received no interest.

Demolition of derelict properties was the number one priority identified by the 25 people who responded to the Planning and Development survey, with enforcement of unsightly premises, and webmap aerial photos also receiving interest. Hamlet beautification was found to be of lesser concern, as was enforcement of non-conforming land uses.

For Economic Development, attracting investment into the region was identified as a high priority for the 23 people who completed the survey, with creating support for entrepreneurship endeavors and newcomer attraction and retention nearly tied for second place. There was strong support for increasing the vitality and health of local businesses, regional collaboration, and succession planning to retain existing investment. Social development was also a high scorer.

For the Regional Programs, people were asked to rank county support to programs, with FFCS coming out as the highest priority for the 25 people who responded, followed by recreation funding.

None of the respondents were interested in Parkland Regional Library.

The final aspect of the public participation and consultation process this year was a Brainstorm Board, where residents were invited to write down their ideas on the board, online, where others could vote for their favourites.

A variety of ideas were put forward; the most popular was a suggestion for a rotating farmers market, that would rotate between communities weekly to be held right on a main street.

Similar ideas; an outdoor weekend festival and an annual fall festival also rotated around the region, garnered the second- and third-highest support from those who voted.

Council and administration also hosted an open house event with a free barbeque; the attendance was not as high as expected.

This year's public participation offered some great incentives, including event tickets to see Shania Twain, Nickelback, and Blink-182.

All municipal councils are required to adopt a public participation policy which must identify the types or categories of approaches the municipality will use to engage municipal stakeholders.

Powerline Baseball has six teams this year, with the Armena Royals, Camrose Roadrunners, Battle River Rivals, Rosalind Athletics, Tofield Braves, and Vegreville Blue Jays.

This is the Heisler-based Rivals second year in the league.

Their season started a bit earlier, and the Rivals are leading the pack, with four games and four wins. Behind them are the Camrose Roadrunners, with a 3-1 record, then the Rosalind Athletics with a 3-2. The Armena Royals and Vegreville Blue Jays are both sitting at 1-3 and the Tofield Braves are 03.

The Rivals will host Tofield this Wednesday at DJW Park in Heisler, game starts at 7 p.m.

Battle River Baseball starts 2023 season with new lineup Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Battle River Baseball League has started the 2023 season with a new lineup of teams.

The league has welcomed two Macklin teams into the league, the Macklin Lakers and Macklin Midget Lakers, and the returning Veteran Bulls.

The Coronation Cardinals are taking a leave of absence for the season.

The eight teams in the league are the Amisk Astros, Killam Braves, Viking Shamrocks, Veteran Bulls, Castor Raiders, Czar Outlaws, Macklin Lakers, and Macklin Midget Lakers.

RCMP Report RCMP members deployed to wildfire-affected areas Killam RCMP occurrences May 18 to 23.

On Thursday, May 18, Killam RCMP Members assisted Viking RCMP when Viking Hospital requested the disposal of drugs.

Also that Thursday, a report was made to Killam RCMP that a washer and dryer was stolen out of a vacant property. Fuel was also syphoned out of vehicles on the property. No suspects or witnesses.

That day Killam RCMP received a hang up 911 call with a female shouting. Members attended the residence and found a subject that was on no contact conditions with another subject. Subject was arrested and released on an Undertaking.

Later Thursday, Killam RCMP received a report that a backpack was recovered in a field that was related to a previous file regarding a stolen truck.

Evidence was retrieved by a Member.

Also that day a report was made to Killam RCMP about a dog attack in Alliance. A Killam Member assisted the complainant and also referred her to the town’s Bylaw Officer.

On Friday, May 19, Killam Members attended a business in Sedgewick as their back door was open.

A Member attended and cleared the building. No signs of a break in.

On Saturday, May 20, a Suspicious Vehicle with two occupants inside was reported driving on Range Road 151. Killam Members patrolled the area but the vehicle was not found.

On Sunday, May 21, a Suspicious Vehicle was reported in the back of a business in Daysland. A Killam Member attended. Member called the Registered Owner and it was also the business owner.

Also Sunday a report from Lougheed was made about a male wearing dark clothing who had entered the complainant’s residence. The Subject was known to Killam Members located and held for a JIR. Justice of the Peace released him on conditions.

On Monday, May 22, a Threatening email was reported to Killam RCMP. Killam Member spoke about safety planning with the Complainant.

Also Monday a report of Uttering Threats was made in Daysland. Members attended a residence where an intoxicated male was causing a disturbance. The Subject was charged and held for a JIR. Subject was released by the Justice of the Peace on conditions.

On Tuesday, May 23, a report was made of an individual causing a disturbance at a business in Killam. Killam Members attended. The Subject and was arrested and released on an Undertaking with conditions.

Also that Tuesday a report of a hitch being stolen off of a truck was made. Killam Member spoke with the Complainant about getting a statement and available video.

Later Tuesday a report was made of dangerous

driving near Galahad. The Complainant was driving and the Subject drove up beside her and then sped off. Killam Member obtained a statement from the Complainant.

Also on Tuesday Killam Members were called out to a report of a tenant dispute. Subject was arrested for Being Unlawfully in a Dwelling and released on an Undertaking.

Later that day Killam RCMP assisted Viking RCMP with an abandoned vehicle at a vacant farm yard. A Killam Member attended and confirmed Continued on Page 26

The devastating legacy of Canada's Mad Cow Crisis The Mad Cow Crisis had a lasting impact on Canada's beef industry The Mad Cow Crisis started 20 years ago this week. For most Canadians, May 20, 2003, means little. But for the beef industry, the situation was nothing less than dreadful. It brought devastation, bankruptcies, and broken families. It was a nightmare.

On May 20, 2003, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency declared that a black Angus cow originating from northern Alberta had been detected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), also known as Mad Cow disease. In response, the United States promptly imposed a ban on Canadian beef and cattle imports, leading to approximately 40 other nations taking similar measures.

Mad cow disease is a fatal illness that gradually deteriorates cattle’s brain and spinal cord. Although humans cannot contract mad cow disease, there is a rare possibility of developing a human variant called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), which is also fatal.

Over time, vCJD causes degeneration of the brain and spinal cord. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 500 Americans die every year exhibiting symptoms that match those of the disease. An autopsy is required to properly diagnose the disease.

Canada couldn’t export anything. Since 60 per cent of our beef went overseas, Canada suddenly had too much beef.

It took more than two years before the U.S. reopened its borders. Japan reopened its borders to Canadian beef in March of this year, almost 20 years later.

Not only is it a time to come out and enjoy your own community’s event, but it’s also an opportunity to pop on your tourist hat and make sure you go visit a neighbouring community.

This year, maybe we should all make a point of inviting out-of-area family members and friends to join us as we visit some of these long-standing events.

One, to make sure they have a successful turnout, and two, to promote just how good life is in our rural Alberta home.

I think it’s always a shame that the people in the communities who volunteer rarely get to enjoy the events, so perhaps we could even do some cross-volunteering. Our municipal governments are all about collaboration, maybe it’s time that we do some collaborating of our own.

bought more beef in support. In fact, at that time, Canada became the only country in the world to see domestic demand for beef go up after the discovery of its first native BSE case. Everyone was expecting Canadians to fear the product, as we saw in Japan, Europe, and elsewhere. But it didn’t happen. Demand for beef per capita from 2002 to 2003 increased by 1.8 kilos, the highest jump ever. It surprised many.

Beef consumption per capita was 33.6 kilos in 2003. Today, it’s at 24.8 kilos.

Seeing all this unfolding in 2003, the late and great Anita Stewart, a renowned culinary author, pioneered Food Day Canada to encourage people to eat more Canadian food, including beef. Recently, our own Parliament officially designated the first Saturday of August as Food Day Canada.

In many ways, the beef industry has changed because of the Mad Cow crisis.

Significant improvements have been made in testing and surveillance measures to detect and monitor the presence of BSE. These include stricter protocols for screening cattle, particularly high-risk animals, and improved diagnostic techniques.

Additionally, stricter regulations have been implemented regarding the use of animal-derived protein in livestock feed, which was identified as a key factor in the spread of BSE. Canada, like many other countries, has implemented bans and restrictions on feeding ruminant protein to ruminant animals to prevent crosscontamination and the potential transmission of the disease.

As such, comprehensive risk mitigation measures have been implemented to prevent the introduction and spread of BSE. These measures include removing specified risk materials (SRMs) during meat processing, which are tissues most likely to carry BSE infectivity.

However, what has not changed is the dominance of meat packers in Canada.

In 2003, when beef prices were incredibly depressed, meat packers were making a fortune as beef retail prices barely changed at all. Prices dropped by about 10 per cent in some markets but went back up again months later.

The Mad Cow crisis started as our BBQ season was getting underway, so packers and grocers likely didn’t see the point of dropping prices at all. Higher retail prices provoked the ire of cattle producers, and they tried to start processing plants on their own.

Over 350 projects started at the time, but only two plants started operations, one in Alberta and the other in Saskatchewan.

Unfortunately, both plants have since ceased operations, leaving us with a massive oligopoly in meatpacking, with three plants processing most of the beef in Canada. This lack of options makes it challenging for cattle farmers to vertically integrate into the meat packing industry.

The Mad Cow crisis has shown us how resilient the beef industry is. Many families had to sell their farms and move to find work as their operations became unprofitable overnight.

Canada remains one of the most dominant beef players in the world, despite the heartaches the sector experienced 20 years ago. It’s something to celebrate over a nice barbecued steak or hamburger.

It’s over, let’s get down to governing

Well that’s over with.

After several weeks of campaigning, Albertans spoke clearly on May 29 and said they wanted the UCP to continue governing this province.

Many pundits said it was a hard fought campaign with NDP leader Rachel Notley and UCP Leader Danielle Smith sparring over issues such as education and healthcare.

Actually to me it was more a battle of which leader did you trust more and how much BS could one side sling against the other.

Throughout most of the campaign, polls of various types showed the race would be close coming down to battleground Calgary to decide the champion.

So now it’s over. A UCP majority.

It was a vote against the NDP, who refused to discuss their record from when they were the government. Albertans remembered that time and didn’t want to go through it again.

Now, will Rachel Notley take a walk in the woods and tell her union buddies she’s done?

Who will replace her?

Well, some have speculated that one or two of her former cabinet colleagues could take a shot at the top job.

I rather doubt that because one of the NDP’s primary weaknesses in this last election was the lack of strength of its candidates.

Woke lefties rallying on about defunding the police, or wanting to spend more money that they can only get from additional taxation, or those who have proudly marched in Communist parades and speak highly of communist regimes are not the people I would want to see leading the party.

But former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi came out loudly supporting Notley last week.

In his early 50s, he has an ego large enough to seek the party leadership.

It would be interesting to see how his decisive style would clash with the NDP head honcho Jagmeet Singh.

But Nenshi turned Calgary sharply to the left, raised business taxes driving business out of the city and did all those neat things socialists like to do.

Plus he has name recognition.

Perhaps north Edmontonian Thomas Lukaszuk may turn from a career in gaslighting to take a shot at the NDP leadership.

He has certainly turned away from being a conservative and he would likely cave to the direction Singh would want him to take.

Yes, he would be a disaster for Alberta so maybe he’d be a strong leadership contender for the NDP. I wonder if the NDP will speak with all media outlets now the election is over?

And now that Danielle Smith has been given a mandate by Albertans, will the provincial mainstream media try to work with her or will they continue to bash her much in the way U.S media demonizes everything Donald Trump does?

Please note: Danielle Smith is not Donald Trump.

Will we see some of the recommendations of the fair deal panel resurrected? Some such as a provincial pension plan and a provincial police force were scuttled for the election, but now they could resurface and face

serious discussion among Albertans.

Will we get a government that promotes responsible, practical economic polices, or one that promotes victimization and delights in calling Albertans systematic racists similar to what our Federal Liberal government does.

And will we now have a strong government willing to stand up to the Feds, who want to intrude into our jurisdiction wherever they please.

The UCP has been given a mandate of four years. Use these four years wisely but respect all Albertans.

Be transparent to Albertans.

Smith has a good squad from which to choose a cabinet. Make it a smaller cabinet based on governing effectively and efficiently. Continue to reduce red tape.

Explore alternative energy sources such as modular nuclear plants that could power our cities. Fight to move liquid natural gas to tidewater for export, to market in the world that are crying out for it.

‘Death Camps’ analogy not appropriate Dear Editor: We are appalled and disappointed by a recent column in the Community Press (He Conquered, May 24). Appalled by the opinions presented, and disappointed that The Community Press published them without editorial comment.

“Without God…we are prisoners taken to death camps.” Perhaps the author of that statement in the column is not aware of the meaning of the term death camps and their horrendous place in twentieth century history.

Perhaps he is unaware of the weight of the impact of his statement on the victims’ families, the survivors, and the survivors’ families, of those death camps.

The extent of the “crime against humanity”[1] during the second world war resulted in over eleven million deaths[2], over five million of those in death camps, of children, women and men because “they didn’t share the race, the religion or the ideology of their executioners”[1].

For perspective, the population of Al-

berta and Saskatchewan, combined, is five and a half million.

Death and concentration camps are not a metaphor. They are horrible crimes that continue in parts of the world to this day.

We, in our Counties, are well beyond fortunate to live in a time and place where our families do not live with the constant fear of being taken to death camps to face torture, starvation, abuse and death.

Vegreville RCMP execute search warrant

On May 25, Vegreville RCMP executed a search warrant on a residence in the Town of Vegreville after attending the residence to arrest a male on numerous outstanding warrants.

As a result, RCMP seized the following:

Also Tuesday a report was made from Hardisty of an unknown male walking the highway. The Subject was pacing back and forth, stumbling, crouching down, and not moving for vehicles. Killam Members attended and patrols were made but the subject was not located.

Two traffic collisions were reported, and one speeding violation was given.

Two items were found and handed in to RCMP to find the owners. RCMP were asked to do two wellbeing checks.

As a result of a Judicial Interim Release hearing, Harker was remanded into custody and appeared in Alberta

Court of Justice in Vegreville on June 29.

Vegreville RCMP continues to combat property theft and the trade of identity theft as part of our ongoing commitment to reduce the impact of these groups on our communities.

Camrose man charged with kidnapping On May 11, Strathcona County RCMP received a report of a kidnapping involving a firearm that occurred in April 2023.

The female victim reported that in mid April she attended a residence in Sherwood Park to gather her belongings when she encountered a known male with a firearm. The victim told police she was assaulted by the male, forced into a vehicle and driven to another location where she was dropped off.

On May 18, the Strathcona County RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) along with the assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team North and RCMP Police Dog Service successfully arrested the male suspect without incident. Police completed a

search warrant on the residence and vehicle located on Groveland Road in Sherwood Park. To date the suspected firearm used during the offence has not been located.

George Siemens (40), a resident of Camrose County, Alta. has been charged with: • Kidnapping with firearm •Assault with a weapon •Unauthorized possession of a weapon •Careless use of a firearm (x2) •Pointing a firearm •Uttering threats •Fail to comply (x3) George Siemens was remanded into custody and scheduled to appear in Sherwood Park Provincial Court on May 24.
