Tensions were high as individuals joined together, watching the poll results come in. Over 60 people were in attendance at the event. Cheers erupted at the declaration Lovelys win with only 12 of the 25 polls being counted. Lovely gave a speech thanking those who helped in any way possible to end the night.

Tofield street-lighting to be upgraded this year John Mather Staff Reporter

The Town of Tofield will carry on and upgrade its street-lighting as outlined in its strategic plan.

“The cost to Fortis to install the lights is close to $300,000, while the cost to Tofield would be $14,000,” explained Chief Administrative Officer Cindy Neufeld during the May 23 council meeting. “But once you install these lights there is a monthly charge for each of them and that would increase our power bill by about $30,000.”

She further added that amount was an annual cost.

She then outlined how the town could divide the town into quadrants and install the lights over a four-year period.

She said they could then add the additional costs into its 2024 budget.

Deputy Mayor Harold Conquest asked if Fortis would stand by their prices for the installation over a four-year period.

“It’s not the cost of putting them in,” suggested Councillor Norm Martineau.

“But rather cost of maintaining them.”

He added when the town had looked at the strategic plan they had had some feedback from the community and asked if

there had been any more.

“Not really,” said Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Jeff Edwards. “There has been comments about getting more lighting along the walking trails but we are doing that.”

Conquest asked what the town’s annual bill was currently and Neufeld said it was close to the amount of the yearly proposed increase essentially doubling the town’s cost.

“But I can’t really say for sure,” she said. “But it would be close.”

Martineau wondered if Fortis would honour the pricing over several years, but Neufeld said she had asked that of Fortis representatives but hadn’t heard back yet.

She said she doubted they would hold the current pricing for four years.

Conquest pointed out the cost of installing the lights which would be primarily absorbed by Fortis equalled about ten years of increased maintenance.

“I think we can make it work and find the $30,000 for this year.”

Neufeld pointed out this year wouldn’t cost the full $30,000 in maintenance because the year was half over. It was further pointed out Fortis might not get all Continued on Page 13

Pancake breakfast draws nearly 200 people in celebration of Paramedic Services Week Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

Beaver Emergency Medical Services held an open house and pancake breakfast May 27 at the Tofield Ambulance Station. The event, held during Paramedic Services week, drew nearly 200 people. Several paramedics were on hand flipping pancakes, frying eggs, and delighting attendees with tours of the ambulance, while kids also took in the bouncy house in addition to balloon animals and face painting. Cost for the breakfast was a donation of any size, where all proceeds were forwarded to the Tofield Ryley and Area Food bank.

A total amount donated was not available by press time.

Beaver EMS executive director Wes Baerg said the event is held annually to highlight paramedics and the work they do.

“Once a year, we have a public acknowledgment of the paramedics, it's called Paramedic Services week and it's national. It’s being celebrated from coast to coast, to acknowledge the work that paramedics do and to give people

an awareness of what's involved,” he said. “We have a pancake breakfast here and tours of the ambulances in the station.”

Baerg said Beaver EMS has nearly 40 paramedics split between the Viking EMS and Tofield, operating five ambulances; two in Viking and three in Tofield. He said that although he is very happy with the staff they have, the ongoing emergency room closures at the Tofield Health Centre have meant longer travel times for patients.

“The hospital is doing as well as they can and we are as well, but it certainly does increase the workload and the travel distance for patients,” he said.

The Tofield Emergency department has been experiencing ongoing overnight closures since Dec. due to staffing shortages. The re-opening date has been pushed forward by one month six times with the most recent date being set for June 2.

Council Corner Town absorbs huge requisition surges but keeps tax hike to 2.2% May 23th, 2023, saw the passing of the Town of Tofield’s 2023 Mill Rate Bylaw, for the purposes of taxation. Council voted unanimously to implement a two point two (2.2%) increase to the Municipal portion of property taxes.

Now, it is important to note that there are other requirements built into the taxes which will receive their own mill rate and are outside of the Town’s control. These further requirements are Beaver Emergency Services Commission (BESC), Beaver Foundation, Alberta Policing, and the School Foundation Fund. Each of the aforementioned must be paid and built into the total combined mill rate each year.

Beaver Emergency Services (BESC) may be an unknown service to many. Therefore, Council felt it important to provide a descriptor. BESC provides fire protection services to Tofield and Beaver County as a whole. These services include the operation of fire halls, as well as the maintenance, upkeep and purchasing of buildings and equipment, such as firetrucks and tankers to provide this essential service to the communities they support.

Emergency Management for the entire Beaver County Region is a service requirement for BESC. As we can see the hardship and strain throughout our province from the presence of wildfires, this is an exceptionally critical com-

ponent for our region’s protection and wellbeing.

To provide further clarity on these additional, necessary areas, a break down will be provided below: 1. BESC – The BESC requisition for 2023 will see an amount of $358,274. (42.67% increase from 2022).

2. The Town is required to levy taxes to pay the School Foundation Fund, this is $489,038 (8.48% decrease from 2022).

3. The Town is also required to levy taxes to pay the requisition to the Beaver Foundation (seniors housing). The Foundation requisition is $121,593 (15.95% increase from 2022).

4. Alberta Policing – This amount will be $76,446 for 2023 (22.66% increase from 2022).

This fee is being charged to all municipalities, as the former threshold for pay, was municipalities 5,000 and higher. This amount will continue to increase throughout the province for the next two years at least.

As one can see in the above breakdown, requisitions from other agencies contributed to an increase outside of the Town’s control.

Therefore, overall, the total combined Mill Rate (Municipal, School, Seniors Foundation, Policing and BESC) will see varying increases on individual properties. Council felt it important for property owners to be aware of the breakdowns which are required outside of

simply the municipal component.

Further, the assessed value of a property is a direct correlation to an increase in taxation amounts. Assessment is the valuation placed upon a property by the Municipal Assessor.

There are varying factors which contribute to the assessed value, however, some of these can be directly tied to sales of similar homes in your neighbourhood, and the final sales price.

For example, should your neighbour’s home be sold, your home will be reassessed based upon the sales value of this property.

Also, upgrades performed to your home, which have a direct result in a change of value for the overall property.

As you can see, there are a variety of components which must be taken into consideration for the total assessed value, which results in the final amount required for taxation purposes on each property in Tofield.

Council remains committed to the citizens of Tofield and felt that an increase to Municipal Taxes, for the purposes of Municipal Operations was necessary.

Beaver County takes concerns about bee industry to RMA meeting Patricia Harcourt Staff Reporter

Beaver County Council has agreed to support an Agriculture Service Board recommendation to bring forward a resolution about concerns over the bee industry to a District 5 meeting.

The concern will be forwarded to an upcoming Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) District 5 meeting.

RMA “represents rural municipalities in meetings with government, and ensures that provincial and federal decision makers, as well as industry and other relevant stakeholders, understand and incorporate the best interests of rural Alberta in their policies,” explained GM of Community Services Aimee Boese, in her report.

“Resolutions are the primary method by which the membership directs the RMA for advocacy,” she said.

The county ASB’s resolution concerns the bee industry and was drafted through consultation with local Tofield area business Beary Berry Honey and other related reports.

Council has to approve the resolution at least four weeks prior to the District 5 meeting, which next takes place on August 25.

The resolution reads: “That Alberta’s agricultural service boards request that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency conducts further research on Varroa Miticide controls and approve a new Varroa Mite to address the lack of control options available to honey producers.”

The resolution concerns honey bee packages, which were closed to Canadian importation from the US in the 1980s.

There is also a lack of options for producers to deal with mites who have become pesticide resistant to the chemicals already available.

These resistant mites are now spreading through Canada’s bee hives, so there is a need for new management tools to ensure the longevity of the bee

industry in this country.

Bees are the major pollinators of orchards, berry farms, vegetables, forages and canola, so also aid in the agricultural industry as a whole.

A motion by Councillor Barry Bruce (Division 4) to adopt the recommendation was passed, Reeve Kevin Smook stated: “As ASB chair, I want to speak to this at the RMA meeting.”

I took a tumble yesterday. Well, not really a tumble, the result was me on the ground but it

was more of a slide or a slither. Tumble suggests I crashed but what happened was my knees just folded and then I was sitting on the garage floor.

See, I’d been at the dentist having a bunch of work done and because I’m such a wuss I was semi-conscious throughout.

I was aware that they were working on my teeth but I didn’t care.

Three hours later Hubby brought me home. I was-

n’t fully with it but he helped me in and out of the car and gave me an arm to grip hard enough that his circulation was cut off.

Never once did he yelp or even whimper. Unless I was too loopy to notice.

Or maybe I was too busy being irritated with legs unwilling to take steps. I mean, that’s their job, right?

But I was holding onto stuff other than Hubby’s arm – the garage is full of

handy handholds – while he went ahead (three steps for him, thirty for me) to open the door, when my knees started shaking and folded, and I went down.

I wasn’t hurt; I didn’t even land hard, but my knees, well, they don’t like bending at acute angles; I’ve learned to be gentle with them, not sitting on low chairs, stuff like that. Plopping my rear on the garage floor put them both at an acute

Camrose MLA Lovely celebrates re-election John Mather Staff Reporter

In an Alberta election that seemed to drag on for as long as results merely trickled in from Elections Alberta, Camrose constituency quickly had UCP candidate Jackie Lovely declared the winner.

Lovely was declared by shortly after 10 p.m. when polling showed her leading NDP candidate Richard Bruneau 12,575 votes to 5,545 with 23 of 25 polls reporting.

Lovely was first elected to the Legislature in the 2019 election.

She has served as a Parliamentary Secretary, Associate Minister for the Status of Women, on Premier’s Council on Charities and Civil Societies, on the Public Accounts Committee and was

chair of the Standing Committee on Families and Communities.

“I’m just so grateful to all the people who stepped up to help with the campaign,” said Lovely shortly after being declared the winner.

“And I really want to thank the voters for their confidence and support.”

“I look forward to continuing the work I’ve started,” she said.

“Everyone says you need a second term.

The first term you figure out what needs to be done because you talk the people and then figure out who to talk to find the solutions. And then you need the second term to implement the solutions.”

“I’ve found that to be very true.”

Lovely said she had lots of support throughout the various

communities in the constituencies and that she wanted to “offer my opponents well.”

“We said we were going to run a clean campaign and we did that,” she said.

Locally, Lovely said she was concerned about the fate of the Camrose Casino and also seeing a more equitable split for rural charities working casinos.

“I think they’re under way with the process,” she said.

“I need to check and see where we’re at with the process. I have decided I need to roll up my sleeves and get involved. I strongly believe the rural charities should be receiving equal treatment to the urban charities when it

comes to their shares coming from working at a casino.”

Lovely said UCP Leader Danielle Smith had quickly been on the phone to congratulate her on her win, Monday night.

“I doorknocked for 14 other campaigns during this election,” added Lovely.

“I worked down in Calgary and in Edmonton.

I also doorknocked for the leader when she ran in her by-election. It’s nice when she recognizes the hard work.”

Lovely said she was optimistic about the provincial campaign.

“I happy for my colleagues who have been elected or reelected and I’m hopeful for our other colleagues as the results come in.”

I may have let out a little yelp, or a big one since Hubby heard it.

Hubby tried different ways to get me back on my feet.

Nothing worked, not even asking our neighbour’s help.

So they called for an ambulance; fortunately those come with people trained in things like getting a fat old woman off a garage floor. They made sure nothing but my dignity was broken

and when it was time to lift me I didn’t hear either of them grunt. I did enough for everyone. It wasn’t long before I was in the house, sitting in my favourite chair.

Later, Hubby said I’d been sleeping a lot. I hadn’t eaten anything all day so had a light supper and then slept again, waking only to limp to bed.

Today I have two sore knees and the energy of a wet dishrag. But I think I’ll live. No promises.

Officers warn of fraudsters pretending to be Telus On May 16, a driving complaint was made in regards to a semi truck pulling onto Hwy 14 off of Hwy 834. The complainant was able to slow down and avoid a collision but this is a reminder when pulling out into oncoming traffic make sure all lanes are clear before proceeding after the stop.

On May 16 and May 17, complaints were made about a fraud relating to Telus.

The scam is that Telus sends a new phone for

customer loyalty or plan upgrade and asks for personal information. The scammers use the personal information to order two phones and send them to the client. Neither phone is the one they agreed upon so the client is asked to return the phone to an address. THIS IS NOT TELUS calling. Remember, do not provide your personal information to a company that should already have it on file.

It’s over, let’s get down to governing

Well that’s over with.

After several weeks of campaigning, Albertans spoke clearly on May 29 and said they wanted the UCP to continue governing this province.

Many pundits said it was a hard fought campaign with NDP leader Rachel Notley and UCP Leader Danielle Smith sparring over issues such as education and healthcare.

Actually to me it was more a battle of which leader did you trust more and how much BS could one side sling against the other.

Throughout most of the campaign, polls of various types showed the race would be close coming down to battleground Calgary to decide the champion.

So now it’s over. A UCP majority.

It was a vote against the NDP, who refused to discuss their record from when they were the government. Albertans remembered that time and didn’t want to go through it again.

Now, will Rachel Notley take a walk in the woods and tell her union buddies she’s done?

Who will replace her?

Well, some have speculated that one or two of her former cabinet colleagues could take a shot at the top job.

I rather doubt that because one of the NDP’s primary weaknesses in this last election was the lack of strength of its candidates.

Woke lefties rallying on about defunding the police, or wanting to spend more money that they can only get from additional taxation, or those who have proudly marched in Communist parades and speak highly of communist regimes are not the people I would want to see leading the party.

But former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi came out loudly supporting Notley last week.

In his early 50s, he has an ego large enough to seek the party leadership. It

would be interesting to see how his decisive style would clash with the NDP head honcho Jagmeet Singh.

But Nenshi turned Calgary sharply to the left, raised business taxes driving business out of the city and did all those neat things socialists like to do. Plus he has name recognition.

Perhaps north Edmontonian Thomas Lukaszuk may turn from a career in gaslighting to take a shot at the NDP leadership.

He has certainly turned away from being a conservative and he would likely cave to the direction Singh would want him to take.

Yes, he would be a disaster for Alberta so maybe he’d be a strong leadership contender for the NDP. I wonder if the NDP will speak with all media outlets now the election is over?

And now that Danielle Smith has been given a mandate by Albertans, will the provincial mainstream media try to work with her or will they continue to bash her much in the way U.S media demonizes everything Donald Trump does?

Please note: Danielle Smith is not Donald Trump.

Will we see some of the recommendations of the fair deal panel resurrected?

Some such as a provincial pension plan and a provincial police force were scuttled for the election, but now they could resurface and face serious discussion among Albertans.

Will we get a government that promotes responsible, practical economic polices, or one that promotes victimization and delights in calling Albertans systematic racists similar to what our Federal Liberal government does.

And will we now have a strong government willing to stand up to the Feds, who want to intrude into our jurisdiction wherever they please.

The UCP has been given a mandate of four years. Use these four years wisely but respect all Albertans.

Be transparent to Albertans.

Smith has a good squad from which to choose a cabinet. Make it a smaller cabinet based on governing effectively and efficiently. Continue to reduce red tape.

Explore alternative energy sources such as modular nuclear plants that could power our cities. Fight to move liquid natural gas to tidewater for export, to market in the world that are crying out for it.

Tofield comes alive during community wide garage sale weekend Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

With temperatures above 20 C, the weather was perfect for at least 20 local garage sales to take part in Tofield’s Community Wide Garage Sale weekend May 26-31. Town of Tofield’s recreation and facilities coordinator Vanita Eglauer said she was very happy with how the weekend went.

“The weather held out and in addition to those who advertised on the map lots of people also had garage sales that day,” she said. “The community really came alive with garage sales and buzzing with activity.

The weekend after the long weekend is typically when we do it.”

A town map was available on Tofield’s social media page pinpointing each garage sale location and a brief description of the items being sold.

sale which included several items such as a computer printer and dozens of tools donated by club member Dale Danilak, 80.

Robichaud said the club began their sale on Friday which he said helped boost sales by being one of the first to open.

“It was just such a nice day,” he said. “The lucky thing for us was that we were (one of) the only ones open (Friday) morning (and the people) were just coming. (We were) absolutely flooded (with people).”

Robichaud said the club sold out of two

thirds of their stock on Friday. In addition, Robichaud said they did not put prices on many of the items.

“A lot of stuff I didn't put a price on. And the reason is, this is for senior activities, and it's really a donation. What do you think it's worth?

And often they would say more than I would have asked,” he said.

“As soon as the gardens start, we’re going to the Hutterite colony and spend a day there,” he said. “We're going to the kitchen and then all the ladies will bring out the things that they make and we're going to talk about the Hutterite culture and the Hutterite way because it's of real interest.”

Beaver County and Roadside Brush Control policy Village of Ryley sign grant agreements updated by County council Patricia Harcourt Beaver County repealed the former Roadside Brush Control and accompanying administrative procedure (Policy AG-014) and replaced it with Policy AG-012.

Agricultural Fieldman Jonathan Culbert introduced the change to council at the May 17 regular meeting, with the new policy, including the control of woody vegetation.

“To ensure the sustainability of the county’s infrastructure, various policies and programs have been implemented including grading, gravelling, vegetation control, shoulder pulls, seeding, etc.” stated Culbert’s report to council.

“Woody vegetation that is encroaching upon roadways pose multiple risks to the safety and integrity of roadways,” said Culbert. “While not only reducing sightlines, woody vegetation can also restrict the access of a road and even harm its structural integrity.”

The Roadside Brush Control policy is used to guide administration and field staff on its control, and has been reviewed for needed additions or deletions necessary to improve its guidelines.

Culbert said that “several edits were made to improve the clarity of the policy and to simplify the

administrative procedural steps.”

Council perused the changes at the Governance and Priorities Committee meeting held prior to council. Culbert explained that the formatting and rewriting was done to fit the new policy template and will be included under Public Works.

“This is a program that does help with residents in the area,” he added.

Councillor Barry Bruce (Division 4) said he felt “the county is doing a great job” in term of brushing, and wanted to see it expanded.

Trees causing problems in the county-owned ditches was brought up, as well as overhanging trees on roadways.

“We do handle that on a case by case basis,” said Culbert, explaining the dangers and hazards to the travelling public.

Bruce agreed with Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) who spoke about the dangers of the overhanging trees on road allowances.

Bruce said these trees would cause damage if passing machinery hits them.

Culbert said some producers like to use the trees as windbreakers, if they live near the road. “We try our best to work proactively,” he said, with the producers. He added, however, that the county “has the authority to do the work needed to maintain safety.”

The Village of Ryley, along with Beaver County, have each signed funding agreements with landfill operator Clean Harbors. As per the agreements effective January 1, 2023, Clean Harbors will provide the municipalities with funding through Community Enhancement Grants and hosting donation fees.

“Clean Harbors is committed to being a good corporate citizen, and in line with the company’s desire to contribute to society and the economy, they have entered into agreements with each of the municipalities to provide on-going funding,” stated the county’s Communications Coordinator Tracey Popick, in a May 25 announcement.

The grants are calculated quarterly on tonnage received at the Ryley facility. The agreements also include provisions for future inflation increases.

Ryley Mayor Brian Ducherer expressed his gratitude for the funds, stating: "Clean Harbors has given so much to the community of Ryley over the years.

Their voluntary contributions have made many capital projects possible, enhancing the lives of our residents and keeping our taxes low. This new initiative is a testament to the wonderful relationship between the Village of Ryley and Clean Harbors. Thank you!"

Beaver County retains MNP financial services for another two years Patricia Harcourt Ryan Arndt, general manager of corporate services for Beaver County, made a request regarding the financial audit services work to be done for the county in the coming years.

The recommendation was for administration to be authorized to negotiate an extended agreement with MNP LLP to provide financial audit services to Beaver County for the 2023-24 calendar year.

Council heard that MNP had requested an extension of their auditing contract for the 2023 and 2024 audit services.

“With the change in leadership in Corporate Services and the large number of projects that are being undertaken this year, it is recommended that we keep our current auditors for one more year,” stated Arndt.

“MNP has been our auditor for several years and their familiarity with our policies, procedures, and financial statements would allow Corporate Services to focus their attention on other priorities such as the reserve schedule, software selection, and efficiencies in processed,” he added.

Arndt also noted that, “additional staff time will be required during the first few audits if new auditors are selected who are not familiar with the county’s staff or accounting systems.

“This work will be in addition to large projects that Corporate Services already has planned for in 2023,” he said.

Arndt said MNP will be charging the same fee as the average of $35,000-$40,000 per year over the past few years.

He told council that, to retain the MNP’s services, “would alleviate extra work for the time

being,” in an already busy schedule.

“It would be easier to work with MNP through a transitional time,” said Councillor Lionel Williams (Division 2), adding that “Ryan is new, too.”

Williams asked if Arndt “was happy with MNP,” to which Arndt replied that he has worked with the firm in previous positions elsewhere.

“In my opinion, they do a good job,” he said.

“Then two years might be a better solution,” said Williams, agreeing with Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) who earlier suggested that possibility.

The county has been using the MNP firm since 2014.

A motion by Hrabec was passed for council to authorize the hiring of MNP for up to a two-year period, which includes the 2023 and 2024 calendar years.

Beaver County agrees to expanded employment services for CALP Patricia Harcourt Beaver County has agreed to support two new services for the Community Adult Learning Program(CALP) to aid people in local job searches.

The two programs include a regional Community Job Board and an Enhanced Job Search and Career Planning Support program.

The programs would be funded by the local municipalities that agree to participate and would be administered by CALP. The two projects were presented by CALP to the Beaver Regional Partnership (BRP), which is made up of officials from the four urban and one rural municipality in the county.

“These projects would increase the level of adult learning services in the Beaver County Region,” stated Boese, in her May 17 report to council.

CALP already helps adults with literacy and other basic language skills as well as resume, career and education planning and GED support.

Beaver County CALP “is asking municipal partners to share the cost of the expanded services,” she said, which can contribute to economic and community initiatives across the region.

Based on looking at other jurisdictions, such as Flagstaff County, that have the program, she said that “this is what it would take to run that program.”

The cost for the two programs was based on each municipality contributing per capita funding towards them. The Community Job Board would cost $7,750 including $6,000 for four work hours a week.

The Enhanced Job Search and Career Planning project was listed at $14,500 including $10,000 for contract work of six hours a week.

“If you can do this within those hours there are some great efficiencies there,” noted Councillor Lionel Williams (Division 2), adding he “would support it for 40 hours.”

And Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) wanted to know, “if other municipalities (in Beaver County) don’t proceed with it, how can CALP get it up and running?”

He said that, if only the county and one other village goes into the agreement, it would be unfair to that village in terms of cost.

In that case, the per capita information “would have to be recalculated,” said Boese, “If there are fewer municipalities on board.”

For now, she said, administration “needs to know if council supports it. We will then sort out the rest of where the finances are coming from and the number of municipalities that are supporting it.”

Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1) and Hrabec both stated that the finances would have to be determined in the county’s budget as well.

Boese said that without knowing how many municipalities will come on board, it is difficult to have a time frame of when the projects will be “on the ground.”

She added that, “BRP needs to determine the number of municipalities participating and the scope of the project could change,” with that information.

She said there “are still some details to work out…

We’re just looking to see if there is support,” at this

stage.

Smook said he was in favour of the projects as they “would help advertise regional partnership and collaboration.”

A motion by Williams to support the recommendation was passed.

Clean Harbors Continued from BCC1 For the first quarter of 2023, the village and county are set to receive $117,226.27 and $33,493.22 respectively for the hosting donation fee, and $33,493.22 and $16,746.61 for the Community Enhancement Grant.

The Community Enhancement Grant specifies the funds are to be used for recreation, leisure, and community programs. The hosting donation fee can be used at the discretion of the municipalities for any purpose, including general revenue, business development, and projects such as infrastructure construction or maintenance.

“We are incredibly grateful to Clean Harbors for contributing to the betterment of our community and wellbeing of county residents” said Reeve Kevin Smook, Beaver County. “Partnerships with industry such as this help to fund many projects and reduce the burden on county taxpayers. A policy for more detailed use of these funds will be considered by county council.”

The landfill operated by Clean Harbors is located within the Village of Ryley’s limits on Highway 854.

UCP win reduced majority government John Mather Staff Reporter

It was the wee hours of the morning on May 30, but when the count was finally concluded Danielle Smith and the United Conservative Party had racked up a narrow majority government win over Rachel Notley and the NDP. With ridings flipping back and forth between the two parties for most of the night, the final count was 48 seats for the UCP while Notley and the NDP grew the official opposition to 39 seats.

“To paraphrase our friend Ralph Klein, ‘Welcome to another Miracle on the Prairies’,” Smith bellowed over a raucous crowd at her Calgary victory party. “We faced the most expensive, fierce, and coordinated opposition and third party political campaign in provincial history.

“Many folks wrote us off as recently as last month, but folks chose a move our province forward by reelecting a strong, stable majority government.”

She thanked all candidates regardless of whether they ran for the UCP or any other party.

Smith easily held on to her own seat in Brooks Medicine Hat, where she was up against Alberta Party leader Barry Morishita, who finished a distant third behind the NDP candidate.

In fact the Alberta Party, which ran a limited number of candidates hoping for a breakthrough, was thoroughly decimated as this was strictly a two-horse race throughout the night.

“The election is now over,” continued Smith. “It is time to put aside partisanship, division, personal and political attacks in the rearview mirror. It’s time to move forward as all Albertans no matter who we voted for.”

In mentioning the NDP leader had called to concede the election Smith stated she believed Rachel Notley was a loyal Albertan who truly cares about the province.

Speaking to Albertans who hadn’t cast a vote for the UCP, Smith said, “I want you to know that my mandate is to work for all Albertans no matter how you voted.”

“I will work everyday to demonstrate to you that I can be trusted to work to improve on the issues that are important to you.”

She said she wasn’t perfect but if she heard about concerns she could then work to improve on them.

Smith did take a swipe at the Justin Trudeau Liberals and stated she was fully prepared to stand up to him and Federal policies designed to harm Alberta.

“We do 24-hour shifts. So, they work 96 hours straight and it's a very long shift,” he said. “Shifts greater than 14 hours have mandatory eight hours’ time off to sleep and rest,” he said. “We monitor it as closely as we can to ensure that they have the ability to rest as needed. Although a load is 96 hours long, and each shift is 24 hours, we monitor the length of time they've been on calls. On average in Tofield, it's like 3.2 calls a day. And if they’re going to Edmonton there can be multiple hours while they're awake. In Viking, it's a little less. It's 1.2 calls a day.”

Baerg said two paramedics accompany an ambulance, a primary care paramedic and an advanced care paramedic.

Plenty to celebrate at Niko’s Dance Team’s year end performance Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

Niko’s Dance Team, a dance school that operates out of Ryley, had a

lot to celebrate this past weekend.

Not only did they hold

their year-end performance at the Lougheed Theatre in Camrose on

May 26 for 400 family and friends capping off another successful year, they also celebrated 20 years of dance instruction in the village of Ryley.

Owner Niki Hofer, said in honour of the team’s 20th anniversary, she invited alumni dancers to come back and perform in the show, a dance she said was a crowd favourite and did really well in competitions.

“I can’t even put into words (how) amazing it was to watch them all come back. (They) hadn’t even lost a minute (and) you would have sworn they've been dancing the whole time,” she said.

“The really cool part (was that) the students who came back, have kids (of their own) that dance with me now. So the mothers got to (perform) this dance with their kids. It all started with a dream and I feel like I’m still in the dream.

It was very emotional.”

“The really cool part too was there were some of the students that came back, also have kids that dance with me now. So then the mother's got to dance in this dance with their kids because they're current dancers in the studio. It all started with a dream and I feel like I’m still in the dream. It was very emotional.”

Hofer said 20 years ago, she was 20 years old and teaching dance seven days a week for several different studios all over Alberta when she finally decided to plant some roots.

“I wanted my own home, my own studio,” she said.

“I literally picked the middle of nowhere (Ryley), bought a little house and a piece of land, built a studio and we began.”

Since then, Hofer said she has had three children of her own who currently dance with her in the studio. She said registrations were strong every year until the COVID pandemic “It was a tough two years and I wasn’t sure we were going to survive,” she said, adding that at one point dance instruction had to be done online which was difficult in a rural area.

“It was especially difficult for our tap classes because (they need good audio). As well, a lot of my clients are farmers who live out on acreages and our WiFi isn’t the greatest. There was a lot of delay and it was very frustrating on all parties.

(But) it’s a great feeling to celebrate our 20th anniversary knowing we survived.”

Hofer said her studio teaches all styles of dance including Hip Hop, tap, ballet, jazz, Ukrainian, point and musical theatre.

In terms of future plans, Hofer said she is already thinking of how to celebrate the studio’s 21st anniversary.

“The amount of excitement I had this year, I just want to keep going,” she said. “I want to find something exciting for next year, even though 21 is not a very exciting number. I think from this point on I want to find something to celebrate every year.”
