Holden becomes main hub this year for Beaver 4-H shows Patricia Harcourt Editor
This year the Holden community was the venue for all three local 4-H achievement shows, plus the District Show and Sale. The official host for this year’s Districts was the Tofield 4-H Beef and Multi-Club, but the event was held at the Holden Complex. Lucy Upham, President of the Holden Ag Society, explained the feelings their ag board and community felt about being the centre for all of the 4-H activities. “As an Agricultural Society in a farm and ranch prominent area, we the board are both honoured and proud to be this year’s ‘main hub’ for Beaver County 4-H,” she said. “We strive to honour our agricultural name as we know how important it is for our community and surrounding areas, as well as to keep those ties. “In addition, we find it of upmost importance to help our youth in any way possible to help them succeed and grow,” she said. “As a 4-H member myself I give a lot of who I am today to all I learned and accomplished through my years in the Holden 4-H Beef Cub.” Achievement days were held by Viking, Holden and Tofield 4-H Beef Clubs towards the end of April. This has been crowned with Holden also hosting the District 4-H Beef and Multi-Club Show and Sale on May 1. The District show and sale involved many events over the day including weight-ins, judging competitions, the Cleaver Kids show, Female show, Tofield 4H Multi-Club’s Sheep and Poultry Project, and the Steer show. The concession kept hungry participants and spectators fed and watered for the day. Radio celebrity
Members of the Viking Lions were on hand at the Beaver District 4-H Show on Monday and sat in front of celebrity and radio personality Danny Hooper, who came out to be part of the day’s events. Danny Hooper also was on hand to help out and greet participants and spectators. After the day’s events, a roast beef supper was held and was followed by the Steer Sale with auctioneer Ron Pederson doing the honours. This year’s sales were called “remarkable” and went beyond expectations. A large team of officials volunteered their time to make the day run smoothly including Emcee Aimee Boese, Ring Master Rodney Cameron, Ring Mistress Kassidy Cameron, Conformation Judge Will
Bradford, Judging Card Marker Syd Sware, and Grooming Judge Luke German. The Beaver County 4-H Multi-Club Achievement Day will be showcasing a variety of projects Saturday, June 10 at Holden’s Farmer’s Day. As a central spot in the county, Upham said the four shows being held in Holden allowed people from all over “to come on out and support their youth. “It’s a place where they were showing off all the hard work they have done in the past year,” she said.
