Dance Inspirations Year End Recital

Viking Dance Inspirations held its yearend recital at the Kinsella Community Hall last Saturday night with family and friends on hand to watch the dancers perform their numbers.

From beginners to older adolescents, the members of the club danced to different tunes and dance styles with many brightly coloured costumes and themebased apparel to entrance the watchers.

The beginners performed to “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride,” which was an adorable kick off to the evening’s entertainment.

There were various other performances to delight the audience,

including displays of musical theatre, jazz, tap, lyrical duets, and solo.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious luncheon during the intermission.

After the grand finale, Club President Bailey Stannard thanked everyone for coming to the recital.

“Your attendance shows your support for our dancers, coaches and the influence dance has on our community,” she said. “We had an amazing season, our competition at the For the Love Of Dance was exciting with all of our dancers having incredible results and feedback from adjudicators.

“What a great experience and it’s fantastic to see each dancer grow, and change and learn new things.”

Viking hosts Beaver District 4-H Beef Show and Sale Patricia Harcourt Editor

The local 4-H beef clubs in Beaver County came together on Monday for their Beaver District 4-H Beef Show and Sale on Monday, May 2 at the Viking Carena Complex.

Viking, Holden and Tofield clubs all attended with their cattle to show what they had accomplished over the past year.

The events included the weigh-in, judging, Cleaver show, female cattle show, and steer show. The steer sale started at 7 p.m. that evening as the culmination of the day’s activities.

Participants and others who are there to enjoy

the show all had the opportunity to compare notes on animals and clubs, and have a chance to socialize and catch up with one another from around the area.

Dave Hofstra was this year’s conformation judge, Dave Hofstra and Kendra Fisher were judging card markers, Gord King was grooming judge, Dean Arntzen was the auctioneer for the evening, Lucy Upham and Logan Knott were ring masters, Kendra Fisher was the showmanship judge, and Samuel Otto acted as master of ceremonies for the day.

And there were many other volunteers, sponsors and donators to this large event celebrating 4-H in the county.

Local Beaver County 4-H Beef Clubs, including Viking, Holden, and Tofield, held their Beaver District 4-H Beef Show and Sale on Monday, May 2.

There was a large crowd in attendance at the Viking Carena to see each club’s hard work and bid during the final auction at the end of the event.

Op Ed - Ensuring ambulances will be there when needed The COVID-19 pandemic has put a strain on the provincial healthcare system, and the first responders at AHS Emergency Medical Services have witnessed it firsthand.

EMS has seen a 30 per cent increase in call volumes in many areas, and all call types are increasing. With these high call volumes have come longer response times since last summer, and rising concerns about ambulance availability among many Albertans.

We are taking action to ensure that ambulances will always be there when needed – both now and in the future. We are putting more ambulances and paramedics on the street, changing practices to free up ambulances for critical calls, and increasing capacity in our hospitals to reduce transfer times.

AHS EMS recently announced a 10-Point Plan to address continued system pressures and create capacity within the EMS system.

At the core of this plan – and every decision we make – is patient safety.

EMS has made several operational changes to help create capacity by freeing ambulances up for urgent patient care needs and allowing EMS to better manage continued high call volume.

The first elements of the Metro Response Plan (MRP) are underway, which sees changes to how some ambulances are assigned in order to help keep suburban ambulances in their home communities. It’s early days, but EMS is seeing signs of community coverage increasing and response times decreasing over the last several weeks in several communities.

Another element of the plan sees calls being diverted to the Poison and Drug Information Service (PADIS) as part of the initiative to transfer low-priority calls.

A project in conjunction with Health Link is also being established to further refer calls for secondary triage.

EMS has also stopped the automatic dispatch of ambulances to non-injury motor vehicle collisions, and since this began, EMS Emergency Communications Officers have already noted instances where an ambulance that would have previously automatically been sent as a precaution, instead remains in service to respond to urgent calls.

EMS also recently received budget approval to add new ambulances: five ambulances each in Calgary and Edmonton, each year for the next two years, for a total of 20 new ambulances.

Adding resources in the province’s two largest cities – the areas of highest demand – will have a positive ripple effect on neighbouring communities. We are

EMS has also documented improved responses to high-priority events in just a short time. This stems from allowing ambulances to be pre-empted from lower priority assignments and diverted to higher priority assignments when needed.

Similarly, we have two innovative pilot projects that help keep ambulances available to patients in urgent need: EMS has concluded phase one of a project which helps manage non-emergency inter-facility transfers (IFT) by transporting patients who do not need acute care using means other than ambulances (i.e., family, shuttles, taxi, etc.).

While data is currently being evaluated, anecdotal evidence has been positive and the project is being extended to all hospitals in Calgary Zone. In North Zone, the IFT pilot began Jan. 9 at four rural sites and continues for six months.

Similarly, the Red Deer Inter-Facility Transfer Pilot Project manages low-acuity patient transfers between facilities with dedicated transfer units, freeing up ambulances to handle emergency calls.

EMS is committed not only to the well-being of our patients but also of our staff. We are deeply grateful for the dedication of our staff through the pandemic and several elements of the plan help improve patient care by boosting supports for those who work for EMS. This includes the Hours of Work/Fatigue Management project to mitigate fatigue risk among staff, who have been going all-out for the last two years.

The Calgary Integrated Operations Centre is set to open in May. This initiative brings paramedic leads together with zone and hospital staff to improve integration, movement of resources and flow of patients.

Since January, EMS has hired a total of 66 staff: nine temporary full time, and 57 casual. We’ve also been meeting with learning institutions about hiring new graduates and potentially expanding training capacity.

We also know the importance of a long-term vision for EMS. That’s why we’re also developing a Provincial Service Plan for the next five years. As a first step, EMS Staff, our partners and the public have weighed in on the current state of EMS and we’re analyzing the feedback collected.

The 10-point plan is a work in progress, but we believe it is already helping improve healthcare for all Albertans.

Word on the Street: Suspects spotted Church Services For May 2022 cutting copper wire on CN property On April 25, police learned that Kenneth Schram failed to attend court in Vegreville to answer to unrelated charges previously laid by Viking RCMP. Warrants for arrest were issued.

That afternoon, police received a complaint of a semi passing another semi on the highway when it was unsafe. The company of the semi was contacted and advised of his driver’s actions.

On April 26, police received information of a subject who had returned from another country and was not abiding by the quarantine guidelines. Police attended the subject’s residence and located the subject at home and quarantining.

On April 26, a citizen attended the detachment to report she had received a phone call from a male claiming to be from the Alberta Treasury Branch, requesting information about her credit cards and bill payments. The complainant was then contacted again by a male stating he was

from Microsoft and requesting access to her computer. During the various conversations the victim was instructed to obtain $12,000 from her bank account and once she had completed this to contact them for further instruction. Once the victim realized this as a scam, she reported it to the police and her bank.

She was also advised to contact Equifax, TransUnion, and to take her computer into a legitimate business for a complete inspection.

Police would like to remind the public that, unfortunately, there are many fraudsters out there actively trying to scam both money and personal information from you. Never provide either to anyone you cannot positively identify. On April 28, police received a complaint of a motor vehicle collision. The vehicle driver

Popovich couple coming to entertain Coming this weekend, Viking Auxiliary is hosting the Classic Hits and Comedy Variety Show with Richard and Deborah Popovich on May 7 at the Viking Community Hall.

Richard and Deborah Popovich's career highlights include over 30 years performing on the Stettler Steam Train, a 10 year run with their own “Popovich Patio Dinner Theatre”, five albums to their credit, and over 8,000 shows performed in a long and successful career.

Their “Variety Show” features Classic Country hits plus Rock’n Roll from the '50s, '60s, and

'70s mixed with comedy for an evening filled with laughs and nostalgia.

Coffee and goodies will be served along with a draw for door prize.

This is a fundraiser for the Viking Health Care Auxiliary and proceeds from the show are going towards the purchase of a new Obstetrical Stretcher for the Viking Health Centre. The stretcher costs $7,400.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Shirley Moore at the age of 86 in Victoria, BC. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Teena (Don), sons Richard (Joy) and Trent (Diane), grandchildren Brandy, Travis, Curtis, Kelsey and great grandchildren, Addyson and Ryder as well as many extended family members including older sister Dorothy and younger brother Bobby. Predeceased by her parents, Charles and Florence and brothers Gordon and Garth Maxwell.

Mom was born and raised in Viking Alberta. In 1955, she graduated as a Registered Nursing Aide, married Robert (Bob) Moore, and moved to Wetaskiwin and then Camrose. In 1966, they settled in Stettler to raise their family.

She thoroughly enjoyed her lengthy Nursing career and friends she worked with at the Stettler General Hospital. Mom was very creative and loved renovating her home, growing her large veggie and flower gardens, crocheting, crafting and had an amazing talent for refinishing antiques which her family and friends benefited from greatly through the years. Nickels was the card game she loved and played throughout her life. Family will remember spending many evenings of fun and laughter trying to the win against the champion. She was quite the soft ball player and water skier in her younger days and took up golfing in her senior years.

A few years after Dad passed away, Mom decided to leave the cold winters behind and in 1999 moved to sunny Victoria where she enjoyed year-round golfing, travels to the USA and living close to her sister Dorothy and family.

Thank you for all you did for us Mom. We love you and you will be greatly missed by all your family near and far.

That evening, police received a complaint of suspicious activity that had occurred through the night.

The complainant stated there was no damage to their property, no suspects were identified.

On April 29, police received a complaint of a suspicious person on a rural property. Upon speaking with the complainant it was learned that a knock was heard at the door. When the owner’s dogs started barking the knocking stopped.

The complainant did not have a description of the subjects or if there was a vehicle used.

Later that morning, police responded to a complaint of an erratic driver. The complainant advised of a vehicle with varying speeds and not staying in its lane of traffic.

Members were unable to locate the vehicle and surrounding detachments were advised of the vehicle.

That evening, police responded to a complaint of a male sleeping in his vehicle. When the complainant approached the vehicle and the driver woke up the vehicle sped off. Patrols were made in the area and the vehicle was not located.

A licence plate was obtained and the registered owner was determined but denied any involvement.

During this time period, police also issued violation tickets and warnings for various traffic offences.

County pursuing program to take advantage of energy efficiency Patricia Harcourt Beaver County will continue to pursue the implementation of the Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) after discussions April 20.

A motion was passed that council direct administration regarding continued participation in CEIP including the formation of a county bylaw on this matter. Once this takes place, the county would ask for funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to help with administrative costs.

Ethan Forrest, finance intern, informed council that currently there are two municipalities running a CEIP program.

“Beaver County is slated to start (CEIP) in the late summer or early fall,” he added.

Deputy Reeve Hrabec (Division 3), who spearheaded the project in the county, noted that few small communities under 10,000 population are participating.

“It would be quite innovative to be on the program,” he said, adding that he believed there would be “a real benefit at the base level for a program like this.”

Hrabec said that, “the writing is on the wall” regarding federal govern-

ment expectations, who felt it would “be a benefit to local contractors.”

“Does it have to be contracted out or can someone do (the work) themselves,” asked Division 4 Councillor Barry Bruce.

Forrest replied that a person must apply through the program and the application approved, but he would have to check into Bruce’s question.

When Division 2 Councillor Lionel Williams asked what kind of improvements qualify for the program, Forrest said: “Anything renewable energy,” referring to solar panels, high efficiency appliances, insulation, calling it “a pretty broad criteria.”

However, one criteria a project must meet is that it improves the energy efficiency of the house. If someone wishes to buy a property which has been part of the program, the buyer also inherits the payments as they continue to reap the benefits of the improvements.

Residents would pay the money borrowed from the program through an increase on the tax levy of the amount owed.

And criteria is established regarding who is eligible to participate in the program, a move designed to

keep the number of people who can’t pay their debt to a minimum.

Bruce wanted to the maximum allowed to borrow through the program, and Forrest answered that the county “can set a maximum on how high it wants it to be,” noting that “repayment can be over the life span of the improvement,” citing a new furnace as an example.

These issues can be set out in the bylaw, he said, and the repayment period can be reduced if the county wishes to do that.

Division 5 Councillor Dale Pederson wanted to know which municipalities are already on the program and how it was working out for them.

The answer was Rocky Mountain House and Devon and “are doing well” as the first two communities doing this, said Forrest.

Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1) wanted to know if rental properties could participate, but Forrest said that only residential, non-residential and farmland properties are currently eligible.

The program “hopes to open it up in the next couple of years,” he said.

Bruce noted that the price of gas has tripled in the last year.

“I see a real big incentive for people

starting to save money,” he said, on energy efficiency. “It could become popular very quickly.”

In his report to council, Forrest stated: “The Municipal Government Act authorizes municipalities to establish a Clean Energy Improvement Program (CFEP) and borrow funds on behalf of participating landowners so that these taxpayers can initiate projects on their property that will increase energy efficiency or the use of renewable energy.

“The project costs are tied to the property rather than the individual and these costs are collected through property taxes over an extended period of time.”

The Alberta Municipal Services Corporation (AMSC), a subsidiary of Alberta Municipalities, is the program administrator and decides the types of improvements eligible for funding, plus a list of qualified contractors to do the work. Beaver County would have to enter into an agreement with AMSC to administer the program.

The county’s primary responsibility is to obtain money to fund the program. The council has asked that the county go to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities as a source for this funding.

County Council accepts year-end audited statements Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Council met with MNP LLP auditors to peruse the 2021 financial statements together at the county’s April 27 regular meeting.

Attending the meeting were Benji WaserTahner Bower, who made a power point presentation during the presentation.

Questions and discussion came up about whether or not to include amortization, which Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1) said “comes up every year…If you take (amortiza-

tion) out it changes the bottom line,” making that $2.7 million under budget.

“Why not include it so it comes out balanced?” asked Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3).

“Some municipalities do,” came the response, suggesting that administration could look to see if it could be included “so it lines up better” budget-wise.

But Director of Finance Ed Bujownicz said the county does its calculations “In accordance with generally accepted municipal practices,”

which comes from the guidance of Municipal Affairs.

And Legislative officer Margaret Jones (Assistant CAO), cited to council the section of the Municipal Government Act “which says amortization is not included,” she said.

Council heard that salaries, wages and benefits make up 28 per cent of the budget, and that uncollectable taxes amounts have improved - from 3.3% of taxes in 2019, to 3.2% in 2020, and then down to 2.7% in 2021.

There has also been a “significant increase in deferred revenue,” or

$988,000. This is mostly attributable to Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) funding being carried over as capital funding to help out in future years when that source of revenue is dropped by the province.

Council also heard that net financial assets were up over 2019, and the county had an accumulated surplus of $82 million as of December 31, 2021.

Council agreed to accept the audited statements as presented on a motion by Division 5 Councillor Dale Pederson.

Council tidbits: Viking considers future of town internet Patricia Harcourt Editor

At the most recent council meeting, Viking Council spent time discussing financial matters to do with the town’s utility billing, internet sales, and the concession at the Carena.

The town will be reverting back to monthly billing for utility accounts after an experiment with bi-monthly billing. Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sherry Garbe reported that there “was an issue with the due date,” which she said, “would be fixed on the next billing.”

On another item, Garbe referred to the Internet Usage Report, which council had asked at a previous meeting in March to be brought to the April meeting.

In February, the town issued a notice stating that it is looking to expand its Internet provider service.

The town established itself as an Internet service provider in 2019, offering high speed wireless Internet to the residents of Viking and local rural farms and residents.

The notice said the town was looking at expanding this service to residents outside the immediate 15-km radius of Viking. It announced that “we are currently in the process of securing tower space in our planned areas…”

However, the new council questioned the town’s ability to provide such service considering this year’s financial losses over the previous year’s profits.

“As of now we’re losing money on the Internet,” CAO Garbe said, with 2022 losses to date of $3,810.91.

Conversely there was a profit of almost the same amount in 2021 of $3,732.55.

While total expenses for 2021 were just over $40,000 for the entire 12 months, as of April 14 this year’s expenses are already over $16,000.

Public Works Director Kevin O’Neill told council in part that, “whatever there needs to do has been done,” suggesting the need for more towers and equipment.

“Is it worth keeping?” asked Councillor Cindy Lefsrud, noting the town could “go with other companies” that have unlimited data.

Deputy Mayor Jamie Buttner said: “It’s not very good business,” and no unlimited data offered.

It was agreed that council needs to get more

information, starting with what the financial picture was when the town started offering Internet.

Viking Council also had questions concerning the Viking concession stand’s profit and loss statement. The statement showed that, for March 2022, there was a total income of $20,186.81 and total expenses of $20,570.99 for a loss that month of $384.18.

Deputy Mayor Jamie Buttner posed the same questions at the March 19 meeting that were made by the previous administration before the election last fall.

“What are we doing to make our concession profitable or are we just going to make it a service and lose money?” he asked.

Acting CAO Sherry Garbe replied that, “The town runs the concession.”

person in a management position. “He does a lot himself now,” she said, adding a suggestion has already been made to decrease the menu items in an effort to cut costs.

Councillor Cindy Lefsrud asked if the concession could be leased out instead of the town hiring employees to operate it.

Buttner took time out to praise concession management while noting the difficulty there could be in getting a restaurant to take it over on a lease basis.

“I don’t see anybody (jumping) up and down and wanting to do it,” he said.

Councillor Deb O’Toole Balaban said: “To get this to break even…you have to cut things.”

Lefsrud said the concession should be given a budget and “made accountable” for what is bought and sold.

But Mayor Laura Yakiwchuk felt the concession exercises “due diligence” by taking items off the menu if they don’t sell.

Councillors appeared to want more information.

“It’s a pretty vague report,” said Buttner.

And Lefsrud noted that “utilities are not included, it’s just groceries and staff (in the report).”

“We need an updated report,” agreed Yakiwchuk, to include

things like the menu’s best sellers and any wastage happening.

Public Works Director Kevin O’Neill said the concession “needs parametres” from which to work. It was decided to ask concession management to come to council’s next meeting for a discussion.

A motion was passed to ask the concession manager to the next meeting of council with more information for discussion.

The annual Viking 4-H Beef Achievement Day took place last Saturday at the Viking Carena Complex.

Members and their families, and others in the community, were out to celebrate another year’s highlights for their club.

The day featured judging, a female and market steer show, and lots of time to visit and socialize

while enjoying the activities.

Kurt Pedersen was conformation and showmanship judge, Kurt and Becky Pederson were judging card markers, Becky Pederson was grooming judge, Samuel Otto was Master of Ceremonies, and Austin Hogstead performed the ring master duties.

Everyone enjoyed their special day together showing off their animals and the club’s progress over the past

year.

Holden 4-H Beef Club shows off their hard work Patricia Harcourt Editor The Holden 4-H Beef Club Achievement Day was held at the Viking Carena Complex to mark the end of another successful year for the club and its members.

It was a busy time at the complex with judging competitions, showing for many classes of female and steers raised by the club members.

Also in attendance were an adorable Cleaver Kids class, and grooming competitions were held, with

much more for those attending to take in over the day on Saturday.

Club President Taylor Chomik welcomed everyone in the morning, followed by the taking of the 4-H pledge.

Master of Ceremonies Kaitlyn Rude introduced the judges including Conformation Judge Will Bradford, Showmanship Judge April Warrilow, Grooming Judge Grace Christensen, Judging Card Marker Doug and Judy Finseth and Ringmen Cole Grinde and Chris Chomik.

County explores ways to help community halls with costs Patricia Harcourt Editor

Beaver County Council spent time discussing insurance options for non-profit organizations at their April 20 regular meeting. In the end, they settled on the needs of rural community halls within their boundaries to be reviewed for later discussion.

The councillors appeared to favour giving independent funds to the hall organizations, and staying away from bringing non-profits under their insurance umbrella or with the RMA. Margaret Jones, manager of Legislative Services, gave council a report outlining options available to them, outlining the issues for rural community halls, cemeteries, the seed cleaning plant, and agriculture societies.

“Many non-profit organizations obtain insurance coverage privately,” she stated.

“Others are affiliated with municipal or provincial organizations and may be able to obtain insurance at preferred rates.”

Speaking of rural community halls, she stated: “Premiums are expensive. Council recognizes the financial burden that insurance premiums can place on these groups.” Under a county policy, a grant of up to $1,000 is given

to rural community halls to help with this burden.

After Jones read her report, Division 5 Councillor Dale Pederson said that “the easiest way out is to subsidize their existing insurance premiums,” calling it “the simplest way to go.”

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) agreed, adding this leaves “no tie (insurance-wise) to the county.”

But Councillor Lionel Williams (Division 2) disagreed citing Spilstead Hall, which costs $6,000 a year just for insurance.

Council had been considering adding $500 to their current $1,000 grant to rural halls.

This would give a total of $1,500 a year to each hall to help with these costs. “$500 more wouldn’t do it for them,” Williams said, referring to the Spilstead Hall. “I think a community group policy is something that should be investigated.” This was one of two options recommended by Jones, the other being subsidizing insurance costs in the county policy on halls.

However, Smook

asked if “the county is stuck as a payee,” under a community group policy if there was a fire. Jones replied that she “never heard of anyone running out of insurance.”

Hrabec said the county should help the community halls with their insurance, “instead of all the nonprofits.” He said the increased costs of insurance need to be addressed. He felt this was “better than going the insurance coverage route.”

Jones said she would research council’s pref-

erence and bring it back for discussion at another meeting.

A motion was passed directing administra-

tion to review the Community Hall Funding Policy to address the high cost of insurance premiums.

With spring here finally, it’s important to get into the annual spring cleaning phase.

However, here’s some outdoor maintenance steps that can be included to help protect homes from wildfire.

“With the change in seasons, many Albertans have spring cleaning on their minds and are starting to clean up their yards on their farms or acreages,” says Laura Stewart, FireSmart specialist with Alberta Agriculture,

Forestry and Rural Economic Development.

“Some outdoor maintenance activities can be done in the early spring to help protect your home from the damages of wildfire, as we see the wildfire danger rise dramatically in late April and May.” The first thing to do is walk around your property to identify wildfire risks. Start with the first five feet around the entire home and any attachments, such as decks.

“What combustible fuels are you keeping closest to your home?

You want to keep a special eye out for things like dry leaves, grass and twigs, firewood piles, construction materials, and patio furniture,” says Stewart.

“Whenever possible, you want to move these items at least 33 feet from the home or safely store them in a garage or shed.”

Embers ignite more than half of homes damaged or destroyed by wildfire. Research has shown that structural modifications, like fireresistant building materials, can reduce the risk of wildfire damage up

to 40 per cent. If you’re making important structural modifications and moving those combustible fuels further away from your home, you can reduce wildfire risk by up to 75 per cent.

Here’s some simple actions that homeowners can take to address four key areas of the home.

Roof: Keep the roof clean and clear of combustible debris, such as leaves, twigs and branches. Upgrade roof to a Class A ignition resistant roofing material.

Class A roofing materials include clay tile, con-

crete tile, metal and asphalt shingles.

Siding, vents and openings: Examine siding for locations where embers could accumulate or hide. Inspect vents and openings often to ensure they are in good repair and combustible debris is re-

Warm weather heralds the return of some little ‘buzzers’ Warm weather and extra hours of sunlight spark flowering trees and plants to bloom anew.

This is the time of year when the air is sweet with the aroma of blossoms and the familiar hum of insects can be heard all around.

Not all “bugs” are the same this time of year.

While you probably won’t want ants invading your backyard grill fest,

the presence of bees nearby can be a good thing - even if those curious yellow-and-black critters get a little close for comfort from time to time.

Bees are remarkable

• There are roughly 20,000 species of bees around the world. Most of them are solitary bees.

• Bees have five eyes.

Two of the eyes are large compound eyes with hexagonal facets. The

• Bees can carry up to 122 times their body weight in pollen and nectar.

Greenhouses anticipate busy season with the growth of urban gardening Moush John Tofield Mercury

A lot of people took to gardening during the pandemic, and for some that’s become more of a long-term vocation.

With this in mind, local greenhouses are expecting a busy season. Whether you’re buying from Hastings Lake Gardens or Glen View Organic Farm and Greenhouse – two local and popular places to get your gardening essentials – it is advisable to stock up.

Both these greenhouses opened on Saturday, April 30 for the season.

Last year a lot of people were planting gardens in their yards, and that led to a lot of raised gardens.

According to Alberta Horticultural Association, in prairie towns and cities, urban prop-

erties were sizeable, houses were modestly sized, and a significant amount of space was devoted to trees, shrubs, lawns and gardens. As a result, people had the luxury to spread out.

The way that modern urban yards are sized and laid out has changed a great deal in recent years, with

houses taking up most of the space.

However, with the change in space has come a revolution or a renaissance, of sorts.

While people can’t fit a large, traditional garden into their yards, they do have a desire to grow things that will supplement or augment their homes and living space.

It is important for people to consider the basic requirements of the plants that they grow, to ensure that they are successful.

There are many things that plants must have to grow well, bothhealthy and efficiently.

On a basic level, plants need only a few, essential things. They need adequate light,

air, a growing medium (soil), water, nutrients, temperatures, space and freedom from encroachment and pests.

A deficiency or excess

of one or all of them will result in weak or poor plant growth or potentially damage.

Gardeners should evaluate each gardening idea for merit and make adjustments as required.

Here’s some basic questions to ask, according to the provincial horticultural association, even if they seem basic.

• Are they getting six to eight hours of good sunlight a day; • Are they either

freezing or baking or both intermittently; • Is there good drainage of water from whatever growing medium they are in; • Are they receiving sufficient nutrients to support their growth at all stages; • Do they have enough depth of growing medium to develop normally; • Are they spaced so

that they can grow normally, and that they aren’t being crowded out by their neighbours and they aren’t competing for resources.

• Are you able to adjust for changes that occur as plants get older, bigger and shift from vegetative growth to fruiting.

Early spring is time to take care of lawn and grass areas Patricia Hanbidge

Spring is wonderful as the sun rises earlier each day and the birds welcome us to the day even before the sun comes up.

However, the spring weather is far from stable so we need to choose our outdoor garden chores by what the current weather is.

If you have any turf or lawn areas in your landscape, then getting the lawn ready for summer is a great early spring chore.

Hopefully, you did some work on your lawn in late fall as it is important to keep mowing your lawn right until freeze-up so the lawn does not go into winter too long. Lawn that is too long or has lots of leaves or other debris left on it when the snow fell will likely give you more issues for the spring

cleanup.

If your turf areas are packed down, then you will need to give it a good rake to remove the debris and get the individual blades to stand up again.

However, be sure to not rake it when it has not suitably dried out.

This spring will likely give us a lot of snow mold issues so ensure if

you have sensitivities or allergies you do that first raking with a respirator and shower as soon as you are done!

Snow mold is a funny type of fungus that thrives right around 32 F or 0 C. You may find some dead patches, so rake these patches well and fertilize with a fertilizer

containing phosphorus to encourage new rooting of the turf.

Dethatching is the term given to removing some of the “thatch layer” in your lawn. The thatch is the layer of partially decayed cut blades of grass that get trapped in the turf above the soil layer.

Excessively deep thatch (more than 1.5 cm)

can cause problems. A deep layer of thatch will hold moisture and entice roots to form in this layer.

When dry, hot weather or

unusually cold weather occurs, these tender roots can be damaged.

Grass Continued from Page 7 is most desirable. Thatch helps to keep the crown (growing part) of the grass cool, helps to eliminate moisture loss through evaporation, protects the crown during seasonal changes and cushions the crown against wear and tear.

Thatching should only be done if necessary and if needed be done prior to the lawn tuning completely green. Please note that dethatching should only be done when necessary.

Aeration is necessary when lawns become compacted.

Lawns planted on heavy soil, or those receiving a lot of foot traffic tend to get

compacted.

This means that only small amounts of oxygen can enter the hardened soil. When plants are deprived of oxygen in the root zone layer they do not grow at their optimum rate.

Compacted soils are also very difficult to water, as runoff will occur before enough

water is applied. Aeration is only necessary for lawns that are subject to compaction. Lawns especially susceptible should be aerated annually.

• Bees flap their wings 190 to 200 times per second. They can fly up to 15 miles per hour.

• Female bees can sting; males do not.

Losing the stinger will cause the bee to die. The honeybee only can sting once because its stinger is barbed.

Bumblebees and hornets can sting multiple times because they have smooth stingers.

• It can require nectar from two million flowers to make one pound of honey.

• Many bees are not aggressive. Simply moving away from them can prevent a person from being stung.

Generally, bumblebees and honey bees will only sting by accident or if a nest is being disrupted.

• Bees tend to be covered in hair, while wasps (which include yellow jackets) are smooth.

Bees are remarkable creatures and should be celebrated as the weather warms up.

Turning a hobby to a business a lot of hard work for local woman Leslie Cholowsky For Flagstaff businesswoman Jessica Zieffle, her journey from hobby to business started when she decided to crochet some Christmas gifts in December 2016.

She’d taught herself to crochet, refreshing the lessons an aunt had given her as a child. “So I decided to make some dishcloths as gifts for friends and family for Christmas.” Then she threw it out on her social media, asking “Hey, anyone want one of these?”

Before she knew it, she had orders for 30 more.

So after Christmas, based on the success of her handmade dishcloths, Zieffle started her journey to see if there were other products she could make and sell.

TJZ Creations was the business name she decided on, existing only on social media. “I would post different ideas I saw. Mostly at that time I was making custom orders.”

Mid-2017 marked a real step forward when she started creating her own items, and came out that summer with the Scrubbie, her own version of a pot scrubber. It’s crocheted on one side, and has a rougher side on the other. “The final design was a process of trial and error,” she says. Once she was happy with them, she says, she mailed free

samples to customers with their orders.

“They loved them!”

With nothing but positive feedback, Zieffle created a website, and started to sell them. They continue to be one of her most popular products.

“My dishcloth patterns have changed so much over the years, but not that.

The Scrubby was my new best seller.”

Zieffle attended her first market the next December. “I started out with smaller local markets.”

She says her inspiration and appreciation for hand-made things comes from her mom and her grandma. She worked at a sewing store for five years in her teens, and learned how to sew herself at 12 years of age.

For those first markets, she had a lot of little stuff, she says. “Dishcloths, Scrubbies, and hanging towels.” It garnered her a lot of great feedback, and more custom orders. “I used to say yes to everyone, now I am more particular about what I take on.”

By 2018, Zieffle was booking tables at small and big markets year round. Besides the projects she brought to market, she still did custom work as well. “It was something to do at night when the kinds were asleep.”

She says her first big markets were scary. “There’s a bigger table fee to pay; and they are busier. I didn’t want to run

You won’t see Zieffle just throwing her hand-crafted items on a table at markets, either. “I have always played with different display ideas. You need to catch someone’s eye. If they stop, you can talk to them.”

In 2018, Zieffle started playing with vinyl, creating coffee mugs and cutting boards with sayings on them. “But they weren’t a huge hit.”

Then she started to wonder if she was trying to do too much without any real focus. “Do I have too many products?”

In 2019, she dropped the vinyl.

That was also the year Zieffle started making and selling her ‘paperless towels.’

“I started to get a focus, I wanted to make re-useable home products.

“I don’t like to throw too much away, so I started to try to make things to replace some single-use things we all throw out every day.”

In 2019, Zieffle became involved with the Flagstaff Crafted program, offered through Flagstaff County’s Economic Development department. “It helped me out in a lot of different ways,” she says.

An advantage of being part of the Flagstaff Crafted program was the support received towards taking her transactions online and really creating her business and moving it forward.

Zieffle Continued from Page 15 Through that program, Zieffle got in touch with other local makers, and was able to collaborate with another local maker.

Together they put together a baby box in 2021, where Zieffle contributed her hand-made baby products.

“I spent January 2022 really rebuilding and focusing on my website. It was a way to consolidate all my orders in one place. Trying to do it verbally and through social media was a bit of a mess.”

Having an online store has also helped her expand her customer base, as she can ship orders anywhere.

It also helps her track inventory.

A couple of years back she also got her products into her first retail location, applying to local business Rural Root Collective in Killam. That’s when she first started to tag her products, too.

“People love the idea of supporting local artisans, I’ve learned, and we have such a variety of makers and products available in Flagstaff County.”

Zieffle now has a second retail location.

Zieffle has always carefully tracked what sells, and what doesn’t. She’s dropped many of her crochet items, just as she dropped the vinyl. “I’m always looking at and evaluating my products.”

She says one of the challenges when selling handcrafted items is pricing.

“My time is worth something, but I don’t want to price items too high, or too low.” Tracking the time she puts into each hand-made item is partly why she moved from crocheting to sewing, she says. “I can sew faster than I can crochet.”

Once she found her focus, she was then able to continue to create handcrafted practical items, but could branch out into fun, attractive, and more modern designs. “Now I can move from a product development stage into a creative stage. That’s where my kids help out, they help me choose the fabrics sometimes, especially for items used by other kids.

“I can make the products fun, fashionable, and trendy, but also environmentally smart.”

From the start to today, Zieffle alone has created every product she sells. “I love to be able to say ‘everything you see here was made by me.’

“This past Christmas, 2021, was the first time I was consistently so busy I was struggling to keep up.” She attended 12 markets in seven weeks.

When COVID-19 hit, Zieffle was nervous about what it would do to her business. “I thought everything was going to go catastrophically wrong - but it did not.”

One big change that hit

immediately, “There were no markets.”

That’s where she started to see her online sales increasing. She also saw a need to make her website more functional.

Zieffle tries to stay on trend, especially with her kids items. “Sometimes it’s hard to find the designs, but I try.”

She’s expanded the variety of products she offers, while still aligning with her focus. New seasonal designs are a constant for her creations.

She’s also started a newsletter, because if there’s one thing she’s learned through Flagstaff Crafted is that the story matters, and people love to connect with the person who made the items they buy and use.

Zieffle loves the freedom of working for herself, but adds, “It’s a lot more work than people realize, I think.”

This year she’s more confident, especially with her new-found focus. “I know where I want to go.”

years-plus, Zieffle and her husband also have a growing family, with three children aged eight, five, and four.

“I really like the flexibility of being my own boss. I don’t have to work outside my home and spend money on childcare.”

She’s only got one more year until her youngest starts kindergarten, and says she looks forward to

having more time to devote to her business.

Looking back at how it all started, Zieffle says, “I didn’t know this was going to be a business.

“But here I am, I’m making regular sales, people are using and liking my products, and now I’m getting repeat orders.

“This is do-able!”

Zieffle feels like she really found her focus at the

right time. “Recycling is becoming more of an issue as people become more aware of what we are using.”

She’s looking forward to spring, and planting her garden at their acreage.

She’s also excited about being able to attend markets again this year.

“I like this lifestyle. I want to share this with other people.”

Biological controls can be part of a balanced fly control strategy Patricia Hanbidge It seems that with each year that passes, I am writing more and more on alternative strategies for controls to use with pest issues you encounter in your garden or work-related enterprise. We have made a huge disruption in the natural world with our presence, and especially where we congregate in large and dense communities, it is important to minimize our effects and maximize building back that balance in our outdoor world. Biological controls offer this option for better balance in your world.

Introducing any biological control can be very effective but does not act like a pesticide solution. Let’s take an example by looking at biological control of flies.

Spraying a multitude of chemical products on these flies will work for a while, but insects evolve quickly and can develop immunity to the products you are using, which in turn causes us to use more toxic products to gain the same control. A biological works differently but not as quickly as many biologicals are effective by interrupting the life cycle of the problem critter, and over time gains control of the population.

My personal introduction into the beneficial world when I was an intensive livestock producer and provided an ideal environment to the many species of flies by providing livestock, bedding debris and my home landscape to aid these pesky flies in living a happy life. Always looking for a sustainable, environmentally friendly solution to this out of control fly problem. I began using parasitic wasps for fly control and over time, I had no more flies! For me and countless others who embrace this method of control we now enjoy a much more

pleasant outdoor experience – even if we do keep critters!!

They are a parasitic biological control as they break the lifecycle of the fly by laying their eggs in the fly pupae. The wasps then hatch, devour the fly larvae, and mate to form a new generation.

The lifespan of the wasps ranges from 16 to 28 days, depending on the species. The wasps' duties include crawling, digging, and searching.

They fly to move themselves a little bit, but they're basically crawlers and are useful in horse corrals, cattle feedlots, dairies, poultry houses, swine facilities and kennels.

Any type of manure producing facility or fly breeding area will be an attractive method of controlling flies. The wasps do not harm vegetation and are also used on a variety of crops and horticultural or ornamental plants.

The wasps are effective against most field-type breeding flies including the typical house fly, horn fly, blow fly, black flies, cluster flies, stable fly with some control against the horse and deer fly.

As with any biological control, it is important to realize that the parasitic wasps are not a cure-all.

Integrated pest control includes baits, traps, residual wall sprays, and general cleanliness.

It is important to develop a control program that is custom designed to your specific needs.

As a result, you will not see an immediate elimination of flies from your environment after introducing the parasites.

It can take anywhere from 30 days to a year or more to attain the desired control levels, depending on a number of factors.

These factors include: the time of year; the number of flies present to start with; untreated breeding areas within migrating distance of

your location; weather conditions; past history; and supplemental efforts used in conjunction with parasite releasing (i.e. clean-up, insecticide use, etc.).

As with any pest problem one of the first steps to solutions is identifying specific pests, study their lifecycle and then find suitable solutions.
