The Miller family was nominated by Flagstaff County for this year’s BMO Farm Family at FarmFair 2023. The nomination came through the Ag. Service Board, through member at large Dan Skoberg, which was then ratified at a
Council meeting on June 28. Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely attended FarmFair on Friday, Nov. 10, to see the Miller Family receive their award. She says, “The award was created to acknowledge outstanding farm families in their communities. Criteria for the award includes being responsible stewards of the land, working hard to preserve it, while
feeding the world.” She extends her congratulations to the Millers for receiving this award. The Miller Family Farm was established north of Strome by Patrick and Denise Miller. The family and farm relocated to the homestead of Denise’s great grandparents near Daysland in 1991. Today, Pat and
Denise farm 7,500 acres of grain with their son Dane and daughter-in-law Heather, son Derek and daughter-in-law Breanne. The Miller’s large extended family are very active in the Daysland community, where they volunteer for the curling club, arena, minor ball, playschool, agricultural society, community hall, golf club, and minor hockey.

Flagstaff County is on a high with its Flagstaff Crafted program, winning three awards this year for its innovation and success in the field of economic development. The County’s Economic Development Department was acknowledged and honoured at the IEDC 2023 annual conference in Dallas on Sept. 19. “Flagstaff County has raised the bar for excellence in economic development with its Flagstaff Crafted program. This award is a testament to Flagstaff County’s dedication to its residents and serves as a great example of how economic development can help transform a community for the better,” says Nathan Ohle, IEDC President and CEO. “It is IEDC’s honour and privilege to present Flagstaff County with this award and recognize
its leadership and innovation in the field of economic development.” Every year IEDC looks specifically for economic development organizations, government entities, initiatives, and programs that have demonstrated consistent, exemplary performance in the economic development profession, leading the execution of projects that have a significant impact on revitalizing communities, and playing a major role in shaping and improving the practice of economic development. Economic Development Officer Jenalee Waring says Flagstaff County won two IEDC awards: Bronze in the Business Retention and Expansion Initiatives category and Silver in the Entrepreneurship Category for population sizes of less than 25,000. Flagstaff Crafted also won a Provincial Award this year, the Minister’s Award for Municipal Excellence in the Building Economic Strength category.
