Annual Legion awards handed out

Students of Viking School were presented their awards for their Legion Poem, Essay and Poster Contest entries, which were considered so good they were difficult to pick winners for this year. Those who attended in person lined up for a group photo after being given their awards onstage.

Every year the Viking Legion sponsors a Poster, Poem and Essay Contest for local students to participate in, and this year the results are in with the prize list announced at the Remembrance Day Services on November 11.

First place winners were awarded $25, second place winners received $20 and third place winners were given $15, in all categories.

For the Poetry section of the contest, the list includes: Junior (Grades 4-6): First - Rosa-Lynne Radford; Second - Jax Hodgins; Third - Allison Nordstrom; Intermediate (Grades 7-9: First - Macy Morken;

Second - Kyra Pollington; Third - Sterling Cumming; Senior (Grades 10-12): First - Madison Bird; Second - Jasmine Kaur; Third - Breanne Dufault.

In the Essay category, the winners were: Junior: There were no entries in this category.

Remembrance Day Services held in Viking at Community Hall Patricia Harcourt Editor Viking and area residents honoured their war dead last Friday on Remembrance Day, November 11, with a touching service at a full community hall.

The thought provoking and solemn occasion began with the marching in of the Colour Party and depositing of the flags.

Pastor Ron Chetney led the program which began with the singing of “O’ Canada,” and a “Call to Worship.” Jan Nordstrom was the accompanist at the service.

The Viking Ministerial Association onstage included Pastor Steven TeVelde of the Alliance Community Church, Pastor Chetney and his wife Cheryl of the Golden Valley Lutheran Church, and Brian Rozmahel of the Roman Catholic Church.

The Royal Canadian Legion, Viking Branch #81, was represented by Viking Legion President Elehda Sevcik.

The “Opening Prayer” stated the major theme of these services, and that was “to remember all who served and those who continue serving in our armed forces, especially those who were injured and have died in their service.

“We also pray for healing and for peace and that one day all peoples will lay down their arms and embrace one another as brothers and sisters in our one human family.”

Following a hymn, “The Lord of Sea and Sky,” Pastor TeVelde gave a moving reading of the scriptures. Pastor Chetney followed up with “The Meditation,” giving personal thoughts and prayers on Remembrance Day. He recalled three soldiers in his own family circle and what they experienced in war and its aftermath. One relative suffered terribly from the after effects of mustard gas, the first “weapon of mass destruction,” which caused one million casualties in World War l. Chetney said it would have been “more merciful” for the man to have died rather than live out his days with this affliction.

Another relative flew bomber planes during the Second World War. “Can you imagine what it was like to fly in that metal coffin,” he asked, while wondering which bomb “had your name on it.”

His uncle survived the war but wept over his lost buddies who didn’t make it home.

Finally, Chetney recalled a relative who worked for the Navy during the Vietnam War and was exposed to the chemical Agent Orange widely used by the U.S. to defoliate the trees in Vietnam.

“If you saw those three veterans, you would not know they were veterans because their scars don’t show (on the out-

side),” he said. Other veterans have scars not visible to the naked eye.

“You can’t tell a vet just by looking,” he said, offering the example of a soldier who has experienced terrible things in Afghanistan, a Second World War nurse who cried every night after tending to the wounded in France, and a parade Legionnaire who carries the flag every Remembrance Day and who helped liberate a death camp.

“They are ordinary and yet extra ordinary human beings,” he said, and the man who sacrificed his own life for others to be free “is a soldier and a saviour and a sword against the darkness.”

He then exhorted those present: “Lean over and say ‘thank you’ to someone for their service. It’s all the person needs and means more than medals ever could.”

Every year a solemn “Act of Remembrance” is read in honour of the war dead.

Legion President Sevcik then read out the Honour Role of local soldiers who died to keep the country free. They included W.B. Kelcey, George Brumley, Andrew Dobbie, Ted Brian, Louise Dobry, Ronald Hutton Martin, Ulric Dobrena, David Carey, Howard Saunders, Gordon Elliot, Lloyd Kennett, Arthur Whitford, Jack McAthey, Thos Crawford, Alex Stevenson, Richard Cottrel, James Farmer, Alex Wilby, Carl Christenson, Alvin Siebels, Carl Noreen, William Carpenter, Robert Ashwell, Reginald Long and Max Hays.

Wreaths were deposited by local groups and organizations. Then the “Last Post” rang out in the hall followed by two minutes of silence to honour those war dead.

“Reveille” broke the silence, with President Sevcik reading a moving “Litany: “They shall grow not old/As we grow old/Age shall not weary them/Nor the years condemn/At the going down of the sun/And in the morning/We shall remember them.”

Everyone sang the solemn and beautiful song of remembrance, “Abide With Me,” before Brian Rozmahel led those gathered in the “Prayers of the Faithful,” and “The Lord’s Prayer.”

After “The Benediction,” the assembled sang “God Save the King,” for the first time since the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth ll led to her son King Charles lll assuming the throne of England.

The Colour Party marched the flags out and the company present watched as Melissa Radford presented awards to Viking students who were winners in this year’s Legion Poster, Poem, and Essay Contest. Radford told the crowd that there were 183 entries this year and they were of exceptional calibre, so judging them and picking winners was made even more difficult than usual.

Afterwards, everyone enjoyed some fellowship over a light lunch served by the

Legion for those attending.

A supper was later served at the Legion Hall with full seating for 80 persons to conclude the day’s Remembrance events.

Services of Remembrance were also

held in Holden and Irma, and across the country, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, which marked the Armistice for the First World War on November 11, 1918.

JOHN’S RANT Another week in “la la” land for the Liberals Just when you think the Liberal cabal in Ottawa can’t get any worse, some of its prominent members do or say some silly things to indicate just how far out of touch with the Canadian public they really are.

A few classics occurred during the past week to ten days.

Let’s begin with the financial update provided by our inspired Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.

Now it’s highly unlikely our illustrious Chrystia has gone without a meal in her life, having been educated at both Harvard University and Oxford you can’t deny she’s smart. She speaks five languages including Ukrainian, when at home, so her three children can learn the language.

She even mentioned her three children during an interview last week.

And a little more background … her mother, Halyna, had a distinguished career and ran for the federal New Democratic Party in Edmonton Strathcona in the 1988 federal election.

An ardent feminist, Halyna was a founder of Common Woman Books Collective and Bookstore. From 1981 to 1987 she taught courses on Feminist Theory and Women and the Law at the University of Alberta Faculty of Extension, and published essays and handbooks on Matrimonial Property, Domestic Violence, and Family Law. She was a founding member of the Ukrainian-Canadian feminist organization, the Second Wreath Society.

She was devoted to UkrainianCanadian cultural life. She founded the Peace River Ukrainian Society and

taught Ukrainian language classes in Peace River.

But, back to the present. When asked last week after presenting her financial update if the government is “open to reviewing programs, looking for wasteful spending” and after Canadians were told that cutting taxes and pausing CPP premiums were not on the table, Freeland said that the government announced in April that they were going to look for $9 billion in savings in the federal government.

The finance minister then proceeded to compare the process to how Canadian families are “looking really closely at all of their expenses.”

“I, personally, as a mother and wife, look carefully at my credit card bill once a month and last Sunday I said to the kids, you’re older now,” she said. “You don’t want to watch Disney anymore, let’s cut that Disney+ subscription. So we cut it. It’s only $13.99 a month that we’re saving, but every little bit helps.”

“And I think every mother in Canada is doing that right now. And I want to say to all of those mothers, I believe that I need to take exactly the same approach with the federal government’s finances because that’s the money of Canadians.”

Wow, our Deputy Prime Minister, the real one not Jagmeet Singh, someone who makes up to $575,483 in annual salary and has a net worth of $5 million, feels trimming $13.99 from her monthly expenses is doing her part to help our economy.

How out of touch can someone really be!

After a substantial outcry in the national media, Freeland walked the comments back a day later saying she was a very privileged person.

“I really recognize it is not people like me, people who have my really good fortune, who are struggling the most in Canada,” she said.

She said those struggles shaped the fall economic statement she had prepared.

But she didn’t specifically say what she was doing for the vulnerable in our urban centres who sleep under bridges, struggle for food and live on handouts from the community and through taxpayer subsidized support groups.

She probably could have kept her Disney subscription. I have seen promotional commercials for the service and it seems to be made up primarily of fantasy programming. And we know Chrystia and her Liberal cronies are living in a strange, bizarre, fantasy world.

Why else would they possibly feel the need to squirrel away at the back of the same financial statement another handout of an additional $42 million to CBC/Radio Canada to assist the network recover from the pandemic.

It is designed to help the public broadcaster offset losses in revenue related to the impact of Covid 19.

Why does CBC need more government funding? If anything Freeland would have been smarter to make a positive budgetary restraint measure by cutting funding to this bloated monstrosity called a public radio that claims to speak for all Canadians

when it’s nothing more than the Liberal PR department.

And it received $1.5 billion in 2021/2022 for its operations, and used $156 million for staff bonuses.

Ridiculous! This flow of money has to stop. CBC has to be reined in.

And the last dumb thing out of the Liberals during the past week falls right at the dazzling, stockinged feet of Justin Trudeau.

Prior to jetting off to Asia to attend some high level conferences and no doubt stay in a swanky taxpayer funded hotel and eat high on the hog, what advisor suggested to him it would be a brilliant PR coup to appear on RuPaul’s Canada’s Drag Race?

I mean, I don’t understand why a network would air this show, but then to appear as the first world leader to be in the ‘werkroom’ of the Canada’s Drag Race vs the World series is just stupid.

This appearance by Trudeau makes for the first world leader to enter the 'werkroom' for the Drag Race franchise. He can be seen smiling away in promotional commercials for the program.

Trudeau will join host judges Brooke Lynn Hytes, Brad Goreski, and Traci Melchor, along with several other guest judges. No word on whether Sleepy Joe Biden or maybe even Nancy Pelosi will join in on this fun program.

But then that’s our illustrious leader Justin.

He’s just so “woke”! And just so out of touch with mainstream Canada.

WORD ON THE STREET Ex-boyfriend warned after sending harassing texts On November 9, police received a complaint of a suspicious vehicle driving around a rural property near an oilfield site. It was later determined the vehicle belonged to the landowner and nothing criminal had occurred.

On November 10, police received a complaint of harassing communications. The complainant advised she had received numerous text messages from her exboyfriend even after she had told him to stop texting her. Police spoke with the male in question and warned him to stop harassing the com-

plainant or he could face criminal code charges.

The complainant was updated.

That afternoon, police received a complaint of a vehicle that was broken down on the side of Highway 36 south of Viking. The complainant was concerned it was a traffic hazard. At the same time, a male attended the detachment requesting a jerry can as his vehicle had run out of gas just south of Viking. As police spoke with the male and learned more details about him, they were able to determine he was a suspect in the theft of a

was transported to the Viking Health Centre with minor injuries. The investigation into this matter is ongoing.

That evening, police received a complaint of a suspicious male walking on Highway 14. Police attended and located the same male who had been arrested earlier in the day. He was attempting to make his way back to Lloydminster and was provided some assistance with this.

Also that night, police received a report of a vehicle that had broken down south of Kinsella.

The caller advised he had no way to put his hazard

vehicle in Edmonton.

Police attended the location of the vehicle that had ran out of gas and determined it was the same one that had been stolen in Edmonton. The male was arrested and released to appear in Edmonton Provincial Court in December. The vehicle was seized and towed and Edmonton Police Service was updated.

Also that day, police responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 14 and Highway 36. A semi pulled into the path of a pickup causing the collision. One of the drivers

lights on and was concerned his vehicle was a traffic hazard. Police attended the location and stayed on scene until the tow truck arrived.

On November 11, police received a complaint of a vehicle theft that had occurred overnight. Police spoke with the complainant who advised he had been able to locate the vehicle on his own in Vegreville and had it back in his possession. Police did not pursue charges in this matter.

That night, police received a report of a male walking northbound on Highway 36.

Police attended and provided assistance to the male.

On November 12, police received a complaint regarding a custody order. Police spoke with both parents and mediated the situation.

There were no grounds to pursue any charges.

On November 13, police received a report of a structure fire in Viking. Police attended and deemed the fire nonsuspicious in nature.

Fortunately, there were no injuries sustained and the fire was extinguished by the Viking Fire Department.

ECSHL senior men’s hockey update; Irma Aces drop tough one to Oyen Leslie Cholowsky Staff Reporter

The East Central Senior Hockey League was busy last weekend, with mixed results for local teams.

The Forestburg Flyers hosted the Stettler Imperials on Saturday, Nov. 12, where the Imperials came away with a 3-1 win.

Unfortunately the game sheets were not available at press time for details.

The Sedgewick Sabres met the Hughenden Jets in Hughenden where the two teams played to a 10-6 final for the Sabres.

Again, no game sheet was available at press time.

In other action, Irma hosted the Oyen Eagles, who flew to a 7-2 win.

Oyen opened up the scoring, and the Aces responding to tie it up

with an unassisted goal from Tyler Fischer.

Two more from Oyen made it 3-1 heading into the second period.

The Eagles made it 5-1 before Fischer scored again for Irma, from Justin Ganie and Carter Lawson, to make it 5-2.

One more from the Eagles made it 6-2 heading into the final period.

The Eagles scored one more in the third to make it 7-2.

This was a rollicking matchup, with a quiet second period, but two penalty filled periods otherwise, with the two teams racking up a total of 97 penalty minutes between them.

Delburne and Coronation played in Castor to a 3-2 overtime win for Delburne.

This coming Friday will see Sedgewick travel

head to Hughenden to take on the Jets.

Oyen presently leads the league with five points, and four teams tied for second place

to Oyen, Stettler to Provost, and Delburne to Forestburg.

On Saturday, Coronation will head to Irma, and the Flyers will

with four points each.

Sedgewick and Stettler each have one game in hand.

The Flyers are still looking for their first win after rejoining the league this season.

Official opening held for Holden Rural Academy

Irma U11 Aces boys team (4-5-0) lost a 12-3 game in Cold Lake on Saturday. Knox Smith (2g) and Kholten Anquist scored for Irma. On Sunday, Aces went to Wainwright and won a 10-3 game with Parker Leskow (3g 3a), Kholten Anquist (3g 2a) and Cates Mackay (3g) all getting hat tricks. Trey Gulbraa also scored (1g 2a). We extend our sympathy to Sheldon and Carrie Frissell and family after the passing of Sheldon's mother, Sue Frissell of Wainwright.

Sarah Veenstra, formerly of Irma, passed away at her home in Points West, Wainwright at age 84. She is survived by daughters Pat and Shirley, both of Wainwright, and son Brad of

Red Deer and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband Tom. Thank you to the volunteers who contributed to the fine service in Irma on Remembrance Day. Many also enjoyed the luncheon at the New Horizons Centre.

Holden Ag Society celebrates 50th Patricia Harcourt The Holden Agricultural Society marked its 50th anniversary with a major steak night supper and harvest dance to celebrate the important event.

Lucy Upham, President of the Holden Ag Society, had a lot of helpers Saturday night making this an enjoyable experience for all who attended.

Longstanding Ag Society member Gene Hrabec - who is also Deputy Reeve of Beaver County and Division 3 councillor - cooked the steaks in the kitchen, taking orders from volunteers who brought them back to hungry patrons in the Holden Complex hall.

Meanwhile, they partook of a buffet table which provided all sorts of salads, baked potatoes and vegetables complete with all the trimmings.

Steak nights are held regularly as a fundraiser for the Holden Ag Society to run the Complex, which has been going strong since the early 1970’s when it was built by local residents.

Upham is completing her third term as president, and she brought a great deal of enthusiasm to the event.

“I want to thank everybody here for their continued support for the Holden Complex,” she said, also thanking members of the Ag Society which runs the complex.

“We are celebrating our fiftieth anniversary of the Ag Society,” said Upham. “I want to thank you guys for supporting us.”

Hrabec said the society holds fundraiser steak nights 15 or 16 times a year, estimating he has cooked 1,600 steaks in the past year alone. Then it was time to remember everyone throughout the years who built the complex and kept it running.

“Let’s give a round of applause for the amazing volunteers and for all the past and present members of the board,” said Upham.

Reeve Kevin Smook noted that, although the province pays funds to the agricultural societies, “the county

And when the province failed to provide funding for a couple of years, “the county stepped up,” he said.

Hrabec said the arena was built 50 years ago and the cost of doing it with the work of local volunteers was “peanuts” compared to what it would

cost now.

Completed in 1972, Hrabec said he “hopes it will last another 50 years. It was built with volunteers a little at a time,” and “has been just great over the years.”

He also noted that “things have been going along pretty good,” with the Ag

Society and 4-H clubs partnering to hold events at the Complex, the annual Cattle Show and other events such as the trade fair during the summer Farmers’ Day. Smook also noted how important Ag Societies are to the small communities Continued on BCC2

The celebration also included free skating and a crib tournament, as well as a silent and live auction. Auctioneer Terry Cartier conducted the live auction while making jokes as he went along that encouraged people to bid on items donated by groups and businesses in the area.

Upham invited everyone to the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, November 16. “We’re a

fun team, so join our fun team,” she said.

And board member Carrie Hrabec invited everyone to check out the Holden Ag Society’s website, adding there were “lots of pictures” for them to see and reminisce about.

The cake cutting ceremony took place under a giant ‘50th’ sign, with Upham doing the honours along with help from Gail Alger, Carrie Hrabec, Cynthia Clark and Sarah Hrabec.

The Ag Society is not resting on its laurels after this big shindig, however, with the next steak night set for December 3.

The Harvest Dance completed the evening’s activities.

Viking gymnast takes three Gold and a Silver at Camrose competition

Paisley Merta, who's in Grade 1 in Viking School, had her first gymnastics competition of the season on November 13. Paisley trains at Wainwright Gymnastics Club three nights a week and is competing in Level 2 this season. She had a great first meet getting a medal in each of her four events, including three Golds and a Silver! The meet was hosted at the Academy of Gymnastics’ new facility in Camrose. Paisley is working pretty hard as she is heading to California to compete with her team in January.

OBITUARIES Dennis David McKinney

May 28, 1937 November 7, 2022 (Age 85) We are saddened to announce that Dennis McKinney formerly of Viking, Alberta, passed away on November 7 in Comox, British Columbia at the age of 85 with fami-

ly by his side.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 64 years, Catherine, his son David (Karen), daughter Debbie (Barry), son Glenn and daughter Wanda (Neil), 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, sister Marilyn and many nieces and nephews.

Born in Viking, Alberta, Dennis was a very skilled, hardworking man who was very proud and loved his family dearly.

Dennis joined the RCAF in March of 1957 and took basic training in St. Jean, Quebec. While at basic training Dennis was selected for Air Force Police Training. His many postings included Comox, B.C.; Cold Lake, Alberta; Dana, Saskatchewan; Val d” Or, Quebec; Ottawa, Ont.; Lahr, Germany; Edmonton, Alberta and Sardis, British Columbia.

Dennis served 20 years in the Armed Forces.

Dennis began his second career with the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia in 1977.

Dennis spent 21 years as an Adjuster/Manager and retired for a second time in 1998.

Dennis was an avid fisherman who loved being out on the water.

His love for the sport took him on many fishing adventures with friends and family. He sure knew how to can salmon and set crab traps over the years and was proud to share his knowledge with others. An avid card player, his favourite games included Wizard and many different poker games. He was never shy to take your money from you. Upon retirement he was given a set of golf clubs from his children to take up the sport of golf.

He gave those clubs a good workout right to the end!

Dennis always had his garage door “open for business” and would help anybody out. In his garage he made many burl clocks, candle holders, spoon stands and steak turners. He was a

fine craftsman who gave to others and enjoyed seeing them proudly displayed.

Dennis spent his retirement winters with his wife in Arizona where he met many lifelong friends who taught him the art of relaxation when he was not busy laying flooring, skirting trailers and help-

ing others with anything they needed. He loved the colours of the desert and the sand dunes, a cool beer on a hot day and a good shot of rye.

Dennis was predeceased by his parents Harry and Mary, his brothers Gerald, Stuart and Neil.

The family wishes to

extend their thanks to the staff at the Comox hospital and the Cancer Unit who gave dad such special care.

At Dennis’s request there will be no service.

A donation to the cancer society or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

The Holden 4-H Beef club 2022/23 year has started!

Our weigh-in took place on October 23. We welcomed some new members into our club. We are planning our Christmas party in December.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our functions and fundraisers throughout the coming year. November.6 was our first meeting of the year. New CMOH

Dr. Mark Joffe has been named the new the Chief Medical Officer of Health for the Province of Alberta.

Dr. Joffe replaces Dr. Deena Hinshaw and is currently the vice-president and medical director for Cancer Care Alberta, Clinical Support Services and Provincial Clinical Excellence for Alberta Health Services.

“Dr. Joffe has dedicated himself to improving the health of Albertans throughout his career,” said Jason Copping, Minister of Health on Monday.

“He brings this wealth of experience and knowledge to the role of chief medical officer of health. I look forward to working with him.”

“I am honoured to be asked to take on the chief medical officer of health role for our province,” said Dr. Joffe.

“I have always put the needs of my patients first and foremost throughout my career, which will continue as I take on this new challenge.

“I want to thank Minister Copping for giving me this opportunity.”

An experienced health-care leader with a lifelong passion in the prevention of infectious diseases, Dr. Joffe has worked with the former Capital Health and now Alberta Health Services for more than 25 years.

Dr. Joffe is also a professor in the department of medicine at the University of Alberta.
