Tofield School Awards Night honours 70 students Kari Janzen Staff Reporter The Tofield School held their annual Awards Night on Thursday, October 26 in the school gym. Gabriel Hall (Grade 10) and Kita Janzen (Grade 12) were the evening’s emcees. In attendance was the Battle River School Division’s new superintendent, Rhae-Ann Holoien, BRSD trustee Lyle Albrecht, Beaver County Councillor Lionel Williams, and Mayor of the town of Tofield Deb Dueck.

Seventy Tofield School students were acknowledged for their excellence in athletics, academics, and citizenship.

Achieving the Junior Athletic Awards were female Most Valuable Players (MVPs) Kate Chicoine (Badminton), Elezebeth Hillyer (Basketball), Charli L'Heureux (Track & Field), Brooklyn Ochitwa (Volleyball), and male MVPs Keagan Forrest (Basketball), Brent Hanasyk (Cross Country and Golf), Colton Kuflay (Track & Field), and Koston McNabb (Volleyball).

Achieving the Senior Athletic Awards were female MVPs Gabrielle Woodruff (Badminton), Rayden Henry (Basketball), Amy-Lynn Fraser (Track & Field), Kayden Strilchuk (Volleyball), and male MVPs Christian Amirault (Badminton), Bryson Hymanyk (Badminton and Volleyball), Victor Didusenko (Basketball), Damien MacLeod (Basketball and Cross Country), Weston Wideman (Track & Field), and Derek Liptak (Golf).

Those receiving Honours in grade nine were Harlyn Anderson, Joel Boese, Xavier Bomiel, Adri Freeman, Karys Gallinger, Gabriel Hall, Elezebeth Hillyer, Raghav Khanna, Hudson Kugler, Corbin Lutz, Presley Perry, Gavin Reeves, and Becca Scott.

Grade 9 First Class Honours was awarded to Ellie LeBlanc, Charli L’Heureux, and Erika Swedberg. L’Heureux and Swedberg also tied for the Highest Overall Average Award.

Those in grade 10 awarded with Honours were Peter Asante, Ava-Rae Barnes, Ben Behiels, Jared Clennin, Mercedes Fisher, Sofie Lindskog, Dawson McPhee, and Madison Zemlak. William Hill achieved First Class Honours and the Highest Overall Average.

Those in grade 11 receiving academic Honours were Louis Dumont-Powder, Hailey Gillette, Walter Hayduk, Monika Hemperger, Jarah Hill, Bryson Hymanyk, Kita Janzen, Belle Ray, Avery Stevenson, Callie Svenson, Josh Swedberg, Mataya Tyler, and Payton Yurkowski. Achieving grade 11 First Class Honours were Bailee Kowalchuk, Gabrielle Woodruff, and Kendra Yuha. Ansh Dimri was awarded First Class Honours and the Highest Overall Average.

Legion Poppy Campaign now underway a dignitary,” said Poppy Chair Chris Shaw.

The campaign runs from the last Friday in October through to November 11 and every year the Tofield Legion presents the Mayor, the Reeve, and one of the county councillors with the first poppy.

“The Poppy Campaign is a very busy time of year. The purpose of it is not only to remind people

to wear their poppies, to remember the fallen, but also to raise funds for the care of those that are still with us, and their families,” she said.

Shaw said all of the funds collected from the poppy trays throughout the area are placed into a poppy fund, which is a public trust.

Poppy trays can be found at most businesses in the town of Tofield.

October 25 brought Green Day for the Tofield Titans.

Eleven year old Summer Greenough's passion for frogs made many students acknowledge the small amphibians.

Greenough stated, “I’ve liked frogs for a long, long time. Like ever since I really knew they were frogs. When I was younger, around six years old, we had a pond and I would just grab them. I don’t really have a favourite frog, I like them all.”

After being asked if she was doing this alone she answered, “well at the start, it was just me and my friend Chloe, but then I talked about Green Shirt Day and stuff, but really,

it was my idea.

“They help to balance the ecosystem.”

Greenough also mentioned and continued, “pick up garbage, don’t litter and if you catch a

frog, return it to its ecosystem. Also, don’t disrespect its ecosystem.”

Amphibians are important indicators of wetland health.

They breathe partly

through their skin which is constantly exposed to everything in their environment.

They are more sensitive to pollution, disease and habitat change.

Sharon Yoder Sharon Yoder of Tofield, Alberta was born on January 6, 1948. She passed away on October 28, 2023 in Tofield at the age of 75 years.

Big changes ahead for Lindbrook store Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

The Countryside Service gas station and convenience store in Lindbrook experienced a big change last month when new owners Edward Cho, 34, and Liza Raza, 28, took over the business. Cho, originally from Korea, said he met Raza in the Philippines nearly five years ago while visiting, and was smitten.

“She is very pretty,” he said smiling.

The couple originally planned to marry in Apr of 2020, however Raza said the threat of worldwide COVID restrictions forced a change in their plans.

“We finally got married in June in the city hall (in Korea) without our parents (it was) just the two of us,” she said, adding they also had to cancel a planned honeymoon. Raza said after the smallerthan-expected wedding, they made decisions on where they would live, deciding on Canada to help fulfill a life-long dream for Cho. “He's Korean, I'm Filipino. It's hard for me to find a job in Korea, and it's hard for him to find a job in the Philippines. We needed a place we could both work together,” she said. “This is the perfect place and we really like Canada. It’s his dream (to be here).”

While Cho is excited to be a business owner in Canada, one thing he said he was not excited about is the recent bout

of snow.

“In my hometown in Korea it snows once every five years,” he said. “I saw the snow come every day here and I thought why is it not stopping?”

Raza came to Canada two years ago to secure her permanent residency which enabled her to bring her husband to the country. Cho officially arrived in Aug. “I worked really hard to get my permanent residency so I can bring him because it's his dream,” she said.

Meanwhile, the couple said one of the changes they are planning to make to the business is their operating hours, stretching it from it’s original 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to opening at 6 a.m and closing at 10 p.m.

“By November we are planning to change it,” said Cho. “Longer hours are best.”

Raza said other changes will include some renovations and new products such as different beverages and toys and a new name.

“We’ve brought some new products (and) we are happy that some customers are buying it and they're happy that there is some new stuff,” she said. “We are (also) changing the name to Lindbrook Junction, because it is in the middle.”

According to reports, previous owner, Hemla Wilson, owned the business since 2003 before selling it to Cho and Raza last month. The store has reportedly been in operation for the past 50 years.

Food Bank use at all time high according to national report Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

Food Banks Canada have released their annual Hunger Count Report for 2023 showing steep increases to food bank usage across the country over the previous five years. Since 2019, visits to the food bank nationally were up by 78.5 percent and 32.1 percent since last year. In a press release, Chief Executive Officer for Food Banks Canada, Kirstin Beardsley said inadequate social supports and inflation are to blame.

“Relentless inflation and a broken social safety net has caused many people who never thought they would need a food bank to walk through the doors for the first time. With food banks across Canada in crisis mode, as demand reaches new all-time highs, we must ask: when is it enough before we act?” she said.

In Alberta, the largest group of people using the food bank were single people, making up 40.9 percent of the total users.

Single parent families made up 19.2 percent while two parent families totaled 26.2 percent. Additionally, 21.7 percent of total food bank users are employed while 22.6 percent are on social assistance. The number of users who reported no income were 16.8 percent.

According to Statistics Canada, inflation rose to as high as 8.1 percent in June of 2022. As of Sept. 30, it fell to 3.80 per-

cent. According to reports, some economists say several factors are at play for increased food costs, including adverse weather conditions affecting crops, the value of the Canadian dollar, and the war in Ukraine leading to a surge in wheat, fertilizer and natural gas prices.

A report from the Fraser Institute this past March named the federal carbon tax as another culprit. It said food costs rose 10.4 percent since 2022, with the carbon tax at least partly responsible.

“According to one study, at $50 per tonne, the carbon tax would increase food prices by 3 per cent. The carbon tax (rose) to $65 per tonne in April, (and will) ultimately soar to $170 per tonne in 2030, meaning the carbon tax’s upward pressure on the price of food (and other goods) is just beginning,” said the report.

Meanwhile, Tofield and Ryley district food bank chair Dawn Arnold said the food bank usage statistics are troubling.

“It is amazing and disappointing. In the last 12 months we have had 24 clients that needed us one time only. We’ve had 31 clients whose first time was in the last 12 months but have needed to return between two and nine times,” she said.

Earlier this year, Arnold presented statistics to the Tofield Chamber of Commerce indicating that the number of people in need of the local food bank increased by 60 percent since 2018 with the majority between the ages of 18 and 59 years old.

JOHN’S RANT Trudeau’s move shows he wants the west to collapse economically Alberta’s Speech from the Throne and our Prime Minister’s totally unfair tax break to one region of the country last week, should be a signal to Canadians that our country is in big trouble.

Trudeau announced last week he would be giving a break on the carbon tax to Atlantic Canadians who use home heating oil to heat their homes.

I can remember years ago as a kid growing up in suburban Toronto when the oilman came to our home every few weeks to fill the tank in the basement to fuel our furnace. Gradually natural gas became the preferred supply of fuel for Torontonians once the Trans Canada Pipeline was constructed to transport natural gas from Western Canada to heat central Canadian homes.

Trudeau’s new policy will exempt home heating oil from the carbon tax for the next three years. He also plans to provide a 10 per cent boost to the carbon tax rebates for rural Canadians, boosting it to 20 per cent next year.

Home heating oil in Atlantic Canada is used in 40 per cent of its homes.

Now Trudeau said he was doing this because of actual hardship, not because

polls show Liberal popularity tanking faster than sewage flowing through a freshly unclogged drain.

What he didn’t mention either was his Liberals, not worried about financial hardships a year ago or poll showings, rejected a Conservative motion in the House of Commons to provide a tax exemption on home heating oil.

This was Vote No. 197 in the 44th Parliament on Oct. 24, 2022.

Oh what a short memory Justin has.

And of course as Premiers across Western Canada screamed favouritism because no exemptions were provided for those who heat their homes with sources other than home heating oil, Federal Liberal Rural Economic Development Minister Gudie Hutchings suggested if the rest of Canada voted for Liberals then they may get tax breaks also.

What an imbecile!

But unfortunately this is the way a lot politics is played and what she implied is probably correct.

But it still shouldn’t have been publicly stated.

It won’t help any Western Canadian Liberals get re-elected.

In Monday’s Speech from the Throne,

Alberta Lt.-Gov. Salma Lakhani said, “the Alberta government will not permit the Canadian government to inflict its harmful energy policies. If these policies remain,” Lakhani read, ”the Alberta government will introduce several motions under the Alberta Sovereignty Act to protect people from them.”

Now the NDP jumped on board actually on the side of Albertans but with a motion that the UCP just can’t back.

They suggest Alberta endorse an emergency motion reading, “Be it resolved that Legislative Assembly recognize carbon dioxide emissions contribute to a changing climate that has caused unprecedented wildfires, flooding, evacuations, and extreme weather events in Canada and around the world, while at the same time inflation has caused steep increases to household costs for all Canadians from coast to coast to coast, and therefore the assembly believes the federal government’s recent changes to climate policy announced October 26 should be applied to all Canadians, regardless of geography or home heating method, including natural gas.”

“I hope the UCP will join us in affirm-

ing that climate change is real and that all Canadians have a role in protecting our way of life,” bragged NDP leader Rachel Notley.

Well I guess if you take out the highly outrageous part stating “recognize carbon dioxide emissions contribute to a changing climate that has caused unprecedented wildfires, flooding, evacuations, and extreme weather events in Canada and around the world,” then it might be passable as a united resolution.

But not everyone agrees carbon dioxide is causing all the climate disruptions.

For every scientist who jumps on that ship there is another saying the opposite and both offer some proof.

But there have been climate changes since records started being kept, and man’s dumping into our environment has only been around since the industrial revolution of the mid 1800s.

Typical NDP. We agree, but we want to put something inflammatory into our resolution so any reasonable person can’t support it and we can say “See, you just don’t care.”

Letter: 100-year-old veteran remembers the fallen - War Amps Canada I lost my right arm on Oct. 18, 1944, while serving with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment in Italy.

I was staked at a farmhouse that had a children’s treehouse located nearby. In the treehouse was a sniper who kept shooting at our boys. A tank then came which shot out shells, the shrapnel hitting my right arm.

When I returned home from the war, I joined The War Amps and have been a member ever since.

This Association was started by First World War amputee veterans to help each other adapt to their new reality as amputees.

Having just recently turned 100, I am reflecting this Remembrance Day upon all

those who served in my regiment and never returned home.

Their absence weighs on me and it is essential that we keep their memory alive. I take comfort in knowing that The War Amps and its young members will continue to keep spreading the message long into the future.

The sacrifices of those who served (and continue to serve) deserve to be remembered and honoured.

Each Remembrance Day serves as a poignant reminder of the tremendous price paid by these brave individuals.

Their selflessness and courage continue to resonate, and it is our duty to ensure that their legacy endures.

LOOSE ENDS Waiting for my muse

So here I am, waiting for my muse to give me something funny and halfway intelligent to write about this week.

She isn’t cooperating. She insists that our first snowfall six days ago is a great topic.

Her reasons start with it happening early; we don’t expect snow until the end of October, when it gets colder and dumps enough white stuff on the ground to take the fun out of trick or treating. The kids have to wear more layers of clothing, which turns their costumes, be it a zombie, what’s-her-face - the mermaid, or Flash or Blue Beetle into a bunch

of Michelin men bursting through the seams. Not even that old standard, a bedsheet ghost, can cover up the sweater under the parka, the toque pulled down to their eyebrows where it meets a scarf, and two pair of woolen mittens that make holding onto the treat bag, well, like it suddenly morphed into a greased pig. Okay, maybe that’s a bit humourous. But intelligent? Nope.

Then there’s the way the snow hasn’t done its

usual overnight disappearing act. First snowfalls are notorious for not sticking around but here we are six days later and the roof on our gazebo is still snow-covered. It’s the first thing I see every morning when I open the curtain on my bedroom window; not a fun way to begin the day. Intelligence might show up if I stopped opening the curtain or kept my eyes closed. Yup, that has intelligence written all over it.

Lastly, my muse suggests we take a closer look at the traffic in the city.

Apparently the drivers there don’t believe that changing weather conditions – especially snow mean they need to change their driving habits. In fact, they act surprised that snow falls on their streets and avenues at all.

Like it doesn’t happen every year. So no one is prepared. Snow or allweather tires? Silly idea.

Watching for icy spots or loose snow? Whatever

for? Keeping one eye on the other idiots behind steering wheels? Hey, I can’t drive for them too!

And slowing down? No reason for that. My route to and from work takes me x-many minutes; why would anyone want to mess with that? Why, indeed.

I know. There’s nothing funny about car accidents or backed up traffic.

What’s funny is that it happens every year.

What’s intelligent? Absolutely nothing.

RCMP Report Garage in Ryley broken into, fuel stolen Tofield RCMP Detachment News from October 1 to October 3.

Some notable incidents are: October 2nd – Tofield RCMP received a complaint of a mailbox that had been shot at several times in a rural area outside of Tofield.

Tofield RCMP continue to investigate.

October 8 – Tofield RCMP located a stolen vehicle out of Edmonton. A lone female was located inside who then fled into a nearby residence. The female was located and arrested. Several charges are pending against the

female.

October 12 – Tofield RCMP responded to a single vehicle collision where a lone vehicle caught the edge of the road causing it to roll in the ditch. Minor injuries were reported.

October 12 – Tofield RCMP responded to a serious collision on Highway 14 and Highway 834. A single vehicle attempted to cross the highway from Highway 834 to turn and was struck by a large dump truck travelling on Highway 14.

Driver of the SUV suffered serious but nonlife-threatening

injuries. The driver of the dump trump sustained minor injuries.

Matter is still under investigation.

The Tofield Community Hall was a buzz with activity on Friday Oct. 20, as the Beaver County Career Fair took centre stage.

The fair was a collaborative effort by Viking/Beaver FCSS Director Dawn Chrystian, and Tofield/Beaver County West FCSS Executive Director Tracey Boast Radley.

The event drew a notable turnout, with 150 local Grade 10-12 students eager to engage with over 40 representatives from various businesses, trade professions, and post-secondary institutions.

Beaver County’s Reeve Smook and Councillor Williams, along with Town of Tofield’s Mayor Dueck, Councillor Chehade, and Town of Viking’s Councillor Lefsrud, all shared words of encouragement with the attendees.

Greg Litwin, representing the Tofield and District Chamber of Commerce,

also delivered an inspiring message and Jeff Edwards, Assistant CAO of the Town of Tofield, and also the Master of Ceremonies, shared insightful thoughts with the students during a lunch generously sponsored in part

by Claystone Waste Ltd..

A special note of gratitude goes out to the dedicated organizers and volunteers who made this event a success.

County Ag Service Board members attend regional conference Tracey Popick, Communications Coordinator Beaver County

On Friday, Oct. 20, members of Beaver County’s Agricultural Service Board attended the Northeast Regional Agricultural Service Board Conference at the Metis Crossing in Smoky Lake County.

Acting Chairman Gene Hrabec along with ASB board members Councillor Barry Bruce, Councillor Dale Pederson, public-at-large member Bernie Klammer, and Agricultural Fieldman Jonny Culbert attended the event together with counterparts from 11 other municipal ASBs. During the event, Chairman Hrabec was elected as the alternate representative for the Northeast Regional Agricultural Service Board. Duties of the position include representing and advocating for the ag service boards, as well as the extension programs and research, and with Agriculture and Irrigation Minister R.J. Sigurdson.

Topics discussed at the conference covered numerous agricultural areas including updates to the provincial ASB programs, stakeholder updates from LARA (Lakeland Agricultural Research Association), akin to the Battle River Research Group that provides extension research in the Beaver County area, and various presentations relating to the challenges and state of the agricultural industry.

Additionally, during the conference Beaver County’s Acting ASB Chairman, Gene Hrabec, presented Beaver County’s ASB resolution, “Improving the Sustainability of Canadian Apiculture Through Bee Package Imports and the Control of Varroa Mites.”

The resolution passed with no opposition and will be presented at the provincial Agricultural Service Board Conference in January. Beaver County and its Ag Service Board promotes agricultural business from all levels, including farm based, Industrial and, most importantly, the producers.

County increases fees for snow removal of private driveways Patricia Harcourt Beaver County implemented a new road maintenance policy that include changes made to another policy on snow clearing and ice control services for landowners and renters.

Council also passed a new bylaw raising fees for snow and ice removal for private driveways and agricultural sites.

The revision will “ensure that the driveway maintenance portions are aligned” with the new snow removal policy, said Dan Blackie, general manager of infrastructure.

He asked council Oct. 18 to rescind the current Road Maintenance Policy PW-012, as “this policy establishes guidelines for maintenance priorities which are already identified in Policy INFR-014.”

The road maintenance policy establishes the level of service for various aspects of roadway infrastructure, and “reflects the new Snow and Ice Removal Policy,” said Blackie.

A new fee schedule for snow and ice clearing of private driveways and agricultural sites meant a new fee bylaw was necessary to include these changes.

There was more discussion by council as the county is raising these rates to reflect the increase in costs for fuel and time, among other challenges the county faces.

Blackie requested that council pass all three readings of the new Bylaw 23-1144 Fees, Rates and Charges in one sitting, “due to the need to establish rates for snow clearing and ice control prior to snowfall.” The county’s first snowfall took place the following Monday on Oct. 23.

This fee schedule bylaw was introduced to align with two policies passed earlier in the meeting -

the policy on snow clearing and ice control and the policy on road maintenance.

Prior to this new bylaw being passed, the going rate for grading services was $200 per hour. But this year’s equipment rate guides put the updated rate for equipment use to $301.

“Administration recommends increasing the hourly rate for grading services to $300 (per hour) to avoid competition with local contractors who provide this service,” said Blackie, in his report.

“Everything’s gone up,” he told council. “We’re just trying to stay on par and not undermine any contractors doing the same work.”

Agricultural snow clearing may have a mobilization fee charged, “if a special trip is initiated for that request,” he said. Mobilization fees are $10 per mile round trip and prepayment is required in conjunction with the snow clearing fee.

“If the grader is already out then there is no extra fee,” he said.

Also, prepayment is now required for the first 1/2 hour of residential and the first hour of agricultural snow removal.

“We need to communicate this to ratepayers,” said Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3). Blackie said that “everybody on the (snow removal) list,” plus seniors in the county, will get a notice in the mail about the fee changes.

Social media and the Chronicle will be used to spread the word, along with “word of mouth,” he said.

There will also be a meeting of the grader operators to familiarize them with the new policy.

Council then passed all three readings to enact the fee schedule changes in time for the onset of snow expected in late fall/early winter.

GPC recommends putting beaver control in overland drainage policy Patricia Harcourt The Governance and Priorities Committee (GPC) has recommended that Beaver County Council adopt new inter-related policies on overland drainage and agricultural pest control.

Agricultural Fieldman Jonathan Culbert explained to GPC members, composed of county councillors, that there were two major changes done.

“It puts beaver control out of the pest control policy and into the overland policy,” he said, at the GPC Oct. 18 meeting. The other change was to add an administrative procedure to the policy as it lacked one before.

“Currently, the beaver control level of service is included in the Pest Control Policy,” said Culbert, in his Oct. 18 report. “Administration is recommending that it be included in the Overland Drainage Policy instead as beavers are not listed under the Agricultural Pest Act and the majority of the county’s drainage issues are caused by beavers.”

“A lot of overland drainage issues result from beaver activity and combining all references in one policy is more compact and easier to find,” stated Culbert.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) referred to the policy helping with the time lag between trapping of beaver. “Ratepayers know there will be some trapping time (in that lag) so there won’t be a break in the contract,” he said.

Beaver control was taken out of the pest control policy and placed in the overland drainage policy instead, Culbert said, along with a name

deleted from the policy altogether “as we have no strychnine anymore,” he said, to sell to ratepayers.

Also, black root has been taken out as a provincial agency handles this file, and keeps the county updated, he said.

Councillor Williams (Division 2) questioned Culbert about wild boar activity in the county, Culbert said the county “has been participating in the Wild Boar Program for several years now, and he receives an annual report.

“The province keeps me updated,” he said,” adding that “there is a little bit of work,” involved.

“Wild boars do exist throughout the county,” he said, “mainly in the west end.” He added there are “lots in Strathcona (county).”

While Williams said he believed the numbers of wild boars “will go up not down,” Culbert said the county’s job is to report but the province addresses it.

Following GPC’s recommendation, the next step will see county council decide on whether to adopt these proposals at the Nov. 1 council meeting.

Large crowd takes in Tofield Trunk or Treat JANA SEMENIUK At least 200 people came out for the Tofield and District’s Chamber of Commerce (TDCC) second annual Trunk or Treat event Oct. 29 where 17 local organizations and businesses dressed up for Halloween and handed out candy to children from the trunks of their vehicles parked beside each other.

The event took place in a blocked off portion of 50th street in front of the town office where families could freely walk through with their dressed-up kids, and, for some, also their pets.

In addition to collecting candy from each of the vehicles, kids also enjoyed getting balloon animals and taking family photos at a straw-bale themed photo station.

Litwin said the chamberdriven event is great for families in the community in addition to bringing them together with local businesses.

“It's (also) really good for kids with mobility issues. People can walk around, bring their pets and come down. It's just kind of a fun event,” he said. “Organizations and businesses outfitted their vehicles to advertise for Halloween, and (add) their own personal swag.

(It helps to) advertise so people can put a face to their business.”

Litwin estimated at least 200 people came out to enjoy the afternoon and credits the weather, which hovered around 0c, with helping people to enjoy their time there.

“It’s always weather dependent, so (today) looks good,” he said.

“(The attendance numbers) are similar to last year.”

In addition to trunk or treat a family bingo was organized by the Tofield AG Society and held at the community centre.

Ag Society president Dave Berrecloth said at least 175 people, including children, turned out and made the bingo very successful.

“It was a good event. It was part of the chamber’s trunk or treat and the AG society put together the family bingo,” he said.

“We had a great turn out and we will do it again (next year). It seems popular with the families.”

The trunk or treat event is scheduled annually for the Sunday closest to Halloween.

Holden Halloween Dance expands to include a separate teen dance Kari Janzen Staff Reporter

The Holden Community Hall Association and the Viking Beaver Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) held two Halloween dances at the Holden Community Hall on Saturday, October 28.

Over 80 individuals came out for a spooktacular night of dancing.

The family dance saw about 30 parents and children, while 54 ‘boos and ghouls’ showed up for the teen dance. All had the opportunity to participate in activities such as an escape room, taking pictures at the photo booth, and playing the Halloween touch and guess game.

The Holden Community Hall Association has hosted two teenage

dances already this year, a Spring Fling in May and a Valentine’s Day dance in February, while the Viking Beaver FCSS held the family Halloween dance last year.

This year they partnered up to bring the two together.

Viking Beaver FCSS Director Dawn Chrystian said the dance is part of what they do to build a friendly commu-

nity.

DJ Brian led several line dances including the Macarena, the Cha Cha Slide, and Cadillac Ranch. Prizes were awarded for the best costume as well as the best group costume.

Annual Halloween dance held at Spilstead Hall

The Grim Reaper arrived in time to terminate the chicken (Laura Fowler).

The Spilstead Ladies Society held their annual Halloween Dance on Saturday, Oct. 28. Around 30-40 people came out for the dance. Society Member Jo-Anne Van Sickle said the dance is put on each year for the enjoyment of the community and an effort to raise money to keep the hall going.
