Firefighters receive Exemplary Service Medal Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Three Forestburg Firefighters received the Governor General’s 20-year Exemplary Service Award, Bernie Knievel, Chad Kuefler, and Jim Anderson.

The medal honours members of a Canadian fire service with over 20 years of service, and is given by The Chancellery of Canadian Orders. The awards are made on behalf of the King by instruments signed

by Canada’s Governor General.

Firefighters must be nominated to receive this award.

The award ceremony was hosted by the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association, who said, “Today we had the distinct honour of hosting the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal presentation ceremony. It was a day filled with pride and recognition, as we celebrated the exceptional dedication and service of our fire service professionals.”

Also there to support the three recipients were

Forestburg Fire Chief Kevin Lunty, Deputy Chief Doug Brown, and FRESS Regional Fire Chief Derek Homme.

Forestburg Mayor Blaise Young says, “The Village of Forestburg is extremely proud of our volunteer firefighters. Not only are our volunteers active as first responders, they are also an integral part of our community.

“Forestburg Volunteer Firefighters give freely of their time and can be seen supporting and volunteering at every community event.

“The community has embraced our firefighters as is evident through the massive financial support of equipment fundraisers hosted by the Friends of the Forestburg Department.

“The 20-Year Exemplary Service Award is an indication of the dedication and commitment of those who receive it. Jim, Bernie, and Chad epitomize the highest level of service to Forestburg. We, as a community are very proud of these individuals and congratulate them on this achievement.”

Jets take a weekend win while Sabres lose a close one at home Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Hughenden Jets travelled to Castor on Friday, Nov. 24, to take on the Coronation Royals, coming away with their first win of the season.

The Jets opened the scoring with a shot from Braden Crone, assisted by Brady Johnson, to go up 1-0. A second point, this time from Ryley Johnson, assisted by Brennan Anholt, put them at a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.

Logan Morrison scored one in the second period, from Brady Johnson and Ryley Johnson to make it 3-0 before Coronation managed two goals, one a power play goal, to make it 3-2 heading into the final period.

Anholt scored, unassisted, in the third to give the Jets a 4-2 win.

Cody Clarkson got the win in net for the Jets, saving 27 of 29 shots, with the Jets hitting 31 shots at the Coronation goal.

The Sabres hosted the Delburne Outlaws Friday for an action packed game.

There was no scoring in the first period from either team.

Clay Lang got the scoring started for the Sabres, with a goal assisted by Chase Schatschneider, then scored on the power play a couple of minutes later, this time from Keaton Holinaty and Ryan Guhle, to put the Sabres up by 2.

Guhle scored the Sabres third goal, from Landon Kelndorfer and Kohl Forster to make it 3-0.

The Outlaws scored the next three goals, one on the power play, to tie it 33 heading into the third period.

Schatschneider scored early in the third to put the Sabres ahead 4-3, then Lang got his third of the night, a hat trick, from Holinaty and Dalton Zemanek to make it 5-3.

The Outlaws came back with a pair of goals in the latter part of the period to tie things up again, 5-5 heading into overtime.

The Outlaws scored three minutes into overtime to take a 6-5 win over

the Sabres.

Matthew Gaume took the loss in goal, saving 23 of 28 shots, with the Sabres shooting 58 at Delburn’s netminder.

Lang’s weekend performance puts him on top of the league’s scoring leaders.

The Forestburg Flyers

had a by this weekend.

After weekend play, the Oyen Eagles came out on top of the league, with 10 points, with Stettler and Irma tied for second place with eight points each.

Sedgewick and Provost are tied for fourth place, with seven points each, with Delburne on their

heels at six points in sixth position. Hughenden and Forestburg are tied for seventh, with two points each, while Coronation is still seeking their first win of the season.

Flyers on Friday, Dec. 1, game start at 8 p.m.

On Saturday, the Sabres will host the Irma Aces,

game start 7 p.m. while the Jets will host the Stettler Imperials, with an 8 p.m. start.

Guest: Time to rethink hospital funding

Imagine a business where the more productive it is, the more money it loses.

It sounds weird, but given the way Alberta’s hospitals get their funding, that’s the situation they’re in. The Manning Report, tabled last week, recommends Alberta change how these facilities are funded in order to reduce wait times.

Currently, the province’s hospitals receive a certain amount of money at the start of the year based on the number of procedures they are expected to provide in the upcoming year. These estimations largely rely on how many procedures were performed in the previous year. This approach is known as global budgeting.

For illustration, imagine that Calgary’s Peter Lougheed Hospital performed 50 hip replacement surgeries last year at a cost of $20,000 each. When allocating resources, Alberta Health Services would, therefore, give it enough money to perform another 50 or so such surgeries this year, with little to no regard for the actual needs expressed by long wait lists. While this is admittedly an oversimplification, one can see how this kind of arrangement would be problematic.

Alberta Health Services has justified this practice by claiming that it makes it easier to have a consistent approach to budgeting. The problem is that this consistency comes at the expense of productivity improvements and innovation, which thus leaves patients waiting longer for the treatment they need.

Think about it this way: If a surgeon at that same Peter Lougheed Hospital has come up with a new technique that allows him to perform hip replacement surgery 20 per cent faster, that sounds like great news for patients, as 60 of them can now be treated in the time it previously took to treat 50. This means that 10 more patients should be able to be treated in a year, and so waiting lists can start coming down, right?

But from the perspective of the hospital’s administration, this creates a huge budgetary headache. It had money to cover the costs of providing 50 surgeries, not 60. At the assumed $20,000 per procedure, an extra 10 surgeries represent a $200,000 cost, for which the administrator has no associated funding. Sure, there might be a funding

To sum it up: the Liberals have gone years spending without thought of the possible consequences, and now our nation’s once enviable financial position is in tatters.

But let’s look at some of the details: The total price tag of the Fall Economic Statement is $20 billion of costly, inflationary new spending. This will keep inflation and interest rates rising, much higher than Canadians can afford, continuing to make homes, groceries, fuel and other necessities unaffordable. And the tragedy is that inflation only benefits the very wealthy.

In addition, the Government has proposed to increase taxes on the backs of middle-class people and next year, unbelievably, Justin Trudeau will spend more money servicing his debt than he will on provincial healthcare transfers or more than double what the Government spends yearly on the military.

bump next year if they do it, but it still has a financial problem today.

That’s how global budgeting can stifle innovation and productivity.

What the Manning Report proposes is to switch to a model known as activity-based funding in order to enhance the capacity and performance of the healthcare system.

With activity-based funding, a hospital gets money every time it treats a patient.

This means the more patients get the treatment they’ve been waiting for, the better funded the hospital is.

When doctors find a cheaper, faster, or better way of doing things, they’re no longer digging a hole in their administrators’ budgets. The incentive structure is thus geared towards treating more patients.

It is such a clear-cut case for improving healthcare that most other countries with universal taxpayer-funded health systems have adopted it in some respect, and the effect has been overwhelmingly positive.

When Sweden shifted to activity-based funding in the 1990s, a 50 per cent increase in day surgeries was observed. In Denmark, average waiting times decreased by 17 per cent. Closer to home, in Quebec, its gradual implementation has been credited with increasing the number of MRIs by 22 percent while helping lower their unit cost by four percent.

Alberta has some of the longest median wait times in Canada for elective surgeries.

Just 38 per cent of hip replacements, for instance, were performed within the recommended maximum wait time last year.

It’s quite clear that the status quo is not working for Albertans and that something has to be done. And while other key proposals, such as training more nurses and doctors, remain a necessary part of the solution, these will take time and are small comfort for those currently suffering on a waiting list.

The government needs to take inspiration from the Manning Report and recognize that incentives matter in healthcare. By making sure hospital administrators see a benefit in treating more patients, activity-based funding is the change Alberta needs.

disregard for basic fiscal principles. Trudeau has added a hundred billion dollars of additional debt. Under Justin Trudeau, there has been a decrease in the quality of life in Canada. Housing costs have doubled, and more people are visiting food banks than ever before. Business insolvencies have increased by 37% this year, while violent crime is up 39 per cent and over half of Canadians are $200 or less away from going broke.

For housing alone, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warns that Canada is the most at risk in the G7 for a mortgage default crisis, people renewing their mortgages at today’s rates will see an increase from 2-6 per cent or higher, and mortgage payments are up 150 per cent since 2015.

Despite warnings from experts, and instead of listening to common sense Conservative proposals to reverse this damage, Justin Trudeau has introduced more halfmeasures and photo-ops that will do little to solve the problems Canadians face.

This is all while the Liberals continue their plan to quadruple the carbon tax, refuse to extend their home heating carve out (given to just 3 per cent of Canadians) to everyone, and are holding up Bill C-234 that would exempt all agriculture from the damaging effects of the carbon tax.

Conservatives will continue to bring common sense to the national debate, we are increasingly hearing from folks across Canada who support our plan to axe the carbon tax, balance the budget, and build homes and not bureaucracy to bring home lower prices for Canadians.

After eight years, prices up, rent up, debt up, taxes up, time’s up. It’s time for a change in Ottawa.

Post-construction field work complete for Enbridge’s Line 3 The official record shows that construction of the Canadian portion of Enbridge’s Line 3 Replacement Program (L3RP) was completed more than four years ago and that the new pipeline came into commercial service in December 2019.

But as the general public marked those milestones, small Enbridge construction crews readied to tackle a final series of tasks – ensuring full and final restoration of the 1,070-km pipeline’s surface corridor to its preconstruction state.

“Most people thought we were done with Line 3 in 2019, but there’s plenty of work that goes on in the field even after construction is complete and a new pipeline becomes operational,” says Enbridge Construction Manager Allen Sawatzky.

“With the last seed sown within the pipeline right-of-way (RoW) at the end of October, we can now say the job is truly complete.”

Going forward, maintenance of the pipeline RoW will continue under the Enbridge Operations team.

At the time of its construction, L3RP was the largest Canadian pipeline project in more than a decade. It included installation of 36-inch-diametre, Canadian-made steel pipe over a vast stretch of the Prairies, three aboveground tanks capable of storing up to 1 million barrels of oil, and 18 pump stations to keep the product flowing. Construction took place over several seasons by a peak workforce of about 5,300.

Both during and after construction, Enbridge worked closely with landowners to identify patches of land that would require additional attention such as reseeding, noxious weed control, or rearranging topsoil among other measures.

Aerial and ground surveys also helped pinpoint these areas.

By the start of 2023, a total of 84 items remained in need of some form of additional attention. With the support of subcontractors - Castle Oilfield Construction of Virden, MB, and Neil Charteris Recla-

mation Services Inc. of Kerrobert, SK - this final field work commenced in the spring and wrapped up in a snow-dusted field near Kerrobert on Oct. 29.

The full scope of work in 2023 involved: -Reseeding pasture seed mixes following a third year of drought and poor germination in parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan; -No-till drilling and hydro seed (applied wet with tackifier seed mix) to stick to steep, dry slopes; -Rearranging topsoil and repairing settled ditch

lines; -Side-by-side chemical boom spraying, select hand spraying and mowing to control weeds; and, -Tractor, skid steer, and whipper snipper hand mowing.

“From the very beginning, Enbridge made a commitment that we would leave the land in as good or in better condition than it was before construction started,” Sawatzky says, “and we can now say we’ve done what we said we would do and made good on that

promise.”

The construction manager’s words are borne out by a total of 61 formal field inspections conducted by the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) dating to September 2017.

While the focus of these inspections was environmental protection and reclamation, they also touched on erosion and sediment control, sites of Indigenous significance and general environmental compliance.

In keeping with commitments to landowners

and Indigenous communities, the restoration crew also featured a monitor from the Canadian Association of Energy Pipeline and Landowner Associations (CAEPLA) as well as an Indigenous construction liaison.

“At the end of the day,

the people who live along or in proximity to the pipeline right-of-way are Enbridge’s neighbours and we have an obligation to continuously live up to the trust that they’ve placed in us,” Sawatzky concludes. “That’s really what drives us.”

Killam Health Care Centre solves staffing issues with unique ‘Grow your own’ program Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Back in May 2021, the Killam Health Care Centre was experiencing a shortage of health care aides (HCA), down eight from a full complement of staff.

Killam Health Care Centre Site Administrator Lora Maygard says the shortage was serious enough to give her second thoughts when it came to filling beds.

Maygard says it was also around that time that the site had to recruit personnel from different areas of the hospital to help during COVID, and that led to an idea, and an opportunity.

She says, “We needed hands, and we pulled people from different areas to help us.” From there, these workers had an opportunity to see what a career in hands-on health care looked like, and some expressed interest in the HCA position.

Maygard says she approached Norquest College, who offer HCA training while working. “But we discovered that the tuition was a barrier

to many.”

So Maygard approached the Killam Health Care Foundation board, and asked them for funding to set up bursaries.

“I asked them for $20,000 to fund eight tuitions.”

She says that program would allow the participants to start immediately, and get paid for working while they earned the HCA training.

“The board really liked the idea, so we got the news out via a poster and newspaper ad, and the response was amazing.

“With the financial barrier removed, people saw an opportunity to reach their dreams and work in healthcare.”

Maygard is grateful to the board, for what she calls their visionary outlook, especially for this situation.

“I found I needed more, and went back to them asking for four more bursaries, and they agreed to that as well.”

Maygard says that through the Norquest HCA program, which operated out of the Killam Health Care Centre through an LPN tutor, a total of 12 trained HCAs are now em-

“We’re proud of our program and proud of our new HCAs. “Our residents just love them.”

Maygard says she promoted the program at every table she was at throughout the healthcare community, and notes that there are now similar programs running in Lethbridge and Castor. Killam was the first site to pilot the program, and word of its success has clearly spread to other centres.

“They’re calling it a ‘Grow Your Own’ program, and it’s run through the AUPE union, with funding from the Rural Capacity Investment Fund.”

The program length is 12 to 18 months, and includes an online learning along with the practical learning aspect.

Maygard says, “It really solved our staffing issue, and it’s been great.”

She adds, “We really owe our thanks to the Foundation, by their supporting community members and funding the bursaries. I don’t know what we would have done without this.”

She says all the new HCAs who went through the program seem to love their new career path.

She adds that some of them are now even thinking of furthering their education, going for their Licenced Practical Nurse certification.

Maygard says she’s been talking to various levels of administration about potentially growing the program idea to see movement from HCA to LPN. “There’s no limit. This program opens up the path to education.”

Maygard says the initial applicants were put through a screening process that included herself, the facility’s Resident Care Manager, and a couple of board members.

“Each applicant had to fill out an application and include a letter as to why they wanted this.”

For those unfamiliar with the job, she says health care tours of the facility were offered for those applicants thinking of pursuing the opportunity.

At present there are no more bursary options available, but Maygard says if someone is able to cover their own tuition costs, Killam Health Care Centre is willing to run the program on an individual basis.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for rural community members.”

Maygard says the board has already received very positive feedback for sponsoring the program.

“It’s really great for the Foundation board to hear that kind of feedback.

They are our liaison to the community.

“Our Foundation board felt like this was a real community effort, because the greater community funds the Foundation, so this is truly a community program.”

Maygard has taken a new position with AHS, and will be leaving the facility at the end of the week, but says she’s enjoyed her two and a half years working at the Killam Health Care Centre.

She reiterated her praise for the Killam Health Care Foundation board, and is thankful for their support throughout her time in Killam, and their willingness and vision to think outside the box when necessary.

Sextortion complaint under investigation by Killam RCMP Killam RCMP Detachment occurrences Friday, Nov 10 to Thursday, Nov. 16 Friday, Nov. 10 A report was made of Extortion.

The Complainant had sent intimate photos to an unknown person through Facebook.

The Subject then requested $7,500 to not distribute the images. Complainant was advised to block the account and not to send money. File is under investigation.

A Subject was reported disturbing the peace in Forestburg. Subject was at the Liquor Store arguing with staff wanting to use the phone. Subject eventually left the store and staff didn’t feel safe. Members spoke with the Complainant and advised them to call 911 if they fear for their safety.

A suspicious persons/vehicle was reported from a residence at Township Road 412. Vehicle pulled up to the property with three males looking at the Complainant’s truck. Subjects were chased off. Vehicle described as white ‘90s Chevy and very loud. Patrols made but vehicle not located.

Saturday, Nov. 11 Daysland Hospital requested police assistance.

A report was made of an aggressive patient. Subject was intoxicated and needing medical attention. Killam Members attended and Alberta Health Care Peace officers called to take over.

Members were called out to a report of stolen vehicle keys from a bar in Forestburg. Member called Complainant who advised the keys were found.

A report of a suspected stolen truck on an inactive oil lease site. Subject(s) were no longer on scene and caused extensive damage to the outbuilding.

Member attended and photos were taken. Truck was confirmed stolen from Cut Knife. Possible surveillance.

A break and enter was reported in Alliance. Food and miscellaneous supplies were taken from the

Community Hall. No witnesses or suspects.

Sunday, Nov. 12 Complainant called to report hearing three gunshots and also power tools near her rural residence.

Two males had been seen nearby driving a red truck.

Member attended and Subject vehicle was not located. Fish and Wildlife attended and located a deceased deer with antlers sawed off. Suspected poaching. No witnesses or suspects.

Killam Members attended the address of a Subject to arrest on outstanding warrants. Subject was located and refused to exit the trailer. Eventually came to the door. Subject was held for a JIR and remanded into custody.

Numerous reports of an abandoned vehicle near Hardisty. Members aware and the Registered Owner made arrangements for a tow.

Monday, Nov. 13 An assault was reported in Sedgewick.

Complainant was hearing people outside of his residence. He went outside to investigate and was knocked unconscious.

Complainant and address known to Members. Members attended the scene.

Complainant did not see the Subject(s). Patrols were made. No witnesses or suspects.

A report was made of a break and enter to the Ag building at the Sedgewick Wild Rose Co-op Recreation Centre. Truck damaged and battery stolen.

Tuesday, Nov. 14 A report was made of two vehicles and a backhoe entering an oil lease site. Members attended the scene. Subjects were gone on arrival. Backhoe had been reported stolen. Backhoe was located and towed back to the owner.

Killam Member attended a report of a suspicious person asleep in entryway of a business in Forestburg. Killam Member located the Subject and was arrested for breach of a release order and released on an Undertaking.

A cargo trailer was reported stolen from

Hardisty. Trailer was full of camping equipment. No witnesses or suspects.

A suspicious person/vehicle was reported in Daysland. Complainant reported a man in a silver car had stopped in the back alley and watched her leave her residence. Complainant had seen the Subject vehicle previously around her house parked and watching.

Complainant was advised if it happened again to call when the vehicle is parked in the area.

Killam Member spoke to a Complainant reporting a fraud under $5,000. The Complainant had provided the Subject with banking and personal information. Bank was notified. Member provided contact information for Equifax and TransUnion.

Theft of fuel from three vehicles was reported from a business in Killam. No witnesses or suspects.

A report was made of an impaired driver travelling between Irma and Hardisty. Unable to locate.

A Killam Member on active patrol noticed an abandoned vehicle on HWY 36 and 53 near

Forestburg.

Registered Owner was contacted and would be picking it up.

Wednesday, Nov. 15 An erratic driver was reported south bound on HWY 36. Limited vehicle description given. Member patrolled and vehicle was not located.

Thursday, Nov. 16 A report was made of a fire in a backyard in Daysland. The Complainant felt the flames

were getting high. Killam Member advised the Complainant to call the Fire Department. By the end of the call the Complainant advised the fire was out.

Killam Members responded to an alarm at the Lougheed Curling Rink.

A suspicious vehicle was reported in Forestburg. Vehicle was parked behind a residence.

McDades concert in Daysland a night of storytelling and music Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The McDades performed at the Palace Theatre in Daysland as part of the DaysArts 2023-24 Concert Series last Wednesday, Nov. 22.

The McDades have won multiple Juno awards, including their latest, in 2022, for Best Roots Album (group) and three 2023 Canadian Folk Awards.

While Shannon and Jeremiah McDade have both performed in Daysland with other musical acts, this was the first time the siblings have performed there together. The younger McDades grew up playing music along with their parents and artists from around the world.

They're popular performers, and the DaysArts group had about 20 people purchase individual tickets just to see them again.

Wednesday's performance included Shannon on the violin, Jeremiah on a variety of instruments, including the tin

whistle, saxophone, and even guitar, and Solen on the upright bass.

Tradition and family are the roots of this popular group, as they weave storytelling amongst their vocal performances. Shannon, for instance, says she plays the violin that her greatgrandfather used to play, and Solen told the audience that his bass is 200 years old. He told the story of finding it being used as a planter, and the journey it made getting put back together to be played again.

There were two younger members of the audience Wednesday who hung on every note and every story, and the band even let them try out some of the instruments after the concert.

The McDades played a solid 40 minute show before taking a short intermission, then returning to the stage for another hour of spellbinding vocals and instrumentals.

Sharon Eshpeter of DaysArts described their style as folk with a Celtic flair, with a full range of

musical styles. They performed a few covers, including a Gordon Lightfoot tune, and a lot of original music, too.

One of Eshpeter's favourite pieces was an original song, “November 8” written by Shannon for her brother Jeremiah and his wife for their wedding.

It's evident that The McDades are familiar and comfortable with each other's playing styles, as their vocals and harmonies blend perfectly with their music, and they play off each other with ease and camaraderie which translates into a lot of fun for the audience as well.

Eshpeter says, “I would recommend seeing The McDades if you have the opportunity.

They do tour Alberta fairly regularly.”

She says the audience really enjoyed the performance, with really great feedback afterwards. “Many stayed for the reception after the concert, and got a chance to mingle with the McDade siblings after-

Eshpeter says there are four concerts left in the 2023-24 series, which will pick back up in January.

Series ticket costs are pro-rated to mid season, at just $120, or $30 each for the remaining four performances.

“We always struggle with audience members looking to recognize band names, but there are amazing groups we've had out, or seen perform.

“Our regular ticket holders trust that we are bringing them quality entertainment.”

She says that DaysArts always strives to bring a variety of different musical styles to the series, along with sometimes dance, drama, and even comedy. “It may not be the genre you prefer, but we know that you'll enjoy the concert.”

Their next performance will be Jan. 24 when Jake Vaadeland will take the Palace Theatre stage with his ‘50s bluegrass rockabilly sound.

Flagstaff appoints new member of Ag. Service Board Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff County Council appointed Brenda Martin as a member-at-large of the Ag. Service Board during the regular meeting held Wednesday, Nov. 22.

Martin and her husband run a cow/calf operation, also raising free-range chickens and laying hens. Martin served as Assistant Ag. Fieldman for approximately two years, covering for two maternity positions, and expressed an interest in serving on the board.

Council also heard an update from its Planning and Development department, which noted that 15 development permits had been approved in the last quarter, with a value of $3.8 million, with 53 permits issued to date, with a total value just over $10 million. Ten of these were new singlefamily dwellings, and 35 were accessory buildings.

Council also approved Bylaw 08-23, the Area Structure Plan for an Industrial Subdivision located in Forestburg with an amendment that the Area Structure Plan schedule be changed to show that a forced main

leaving the lift station is proposed, not an existing service.

Council reviewed two policies as part of its three-year review program, the Weight Restrictions on Roads, and Private Laneway Maintenance policies.

The Weight Restrictions on Roads had a minor change, exchanging the term “Public Works Superintendent” with “Municipal Services Director.”

The Private Laneway Maintenance policy was amended to clearly define terms used in the policy, and to allow service agreements and inspection/hazard assessments to extend from year to year, with the onus on the landowner to notify the County of changes to the condition of private laneways. A minor change was made in the wording to align with Council’s current vision statement.

Council received an update from its Health and Safety Department

that outlined seven incidents in the third quarter, with a total of 20 year to date, with 212 training courses completed. Eleven of the incidents related to property damage, six were personal injuries with no lost time, two were related to theft/vandalism, one was a motor vehicle accident, one unsafe act, and two near misses were reported. Incident frequency over the past 10 years as dropped consistently with regards to property damage and personal injury.

Council reviewed a Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Strategy report, accepting it as information. The report notes that “While Flagstaff County has been engaged over the past several years in varying FDI attraction efforts, the focus of these efforts have largely been driven by enquiries rather than by a pro-active plan. While working with potential investors is a valuable

effort regardless, it is also important to have the knowledge and capacity to target more proactively and more specifically.”

The report says, “As designed, this project effort is expected to provide insight, direction, and recommendations in respect to the following;” then outlining five key points. These included ensuring Flagstaff County is investment ready, ensuring the identification of key target sectors are realistic and relevant, identifying marketing materials and initiatives that can best position the County to achieve its objectives, assessing current practices to ensure investment readiness, and building on the importance of managing relationships with existing companies to build by example or by referral.

The FDI strategy was

presented to Council as a subcomponent of the County’s broader economic development strategy.

Council also reviewed outstanding taxes for oil and gas companies currently in receivership or bankrupt with assets that have not yet been reclaimed.

As these taxes are deemed to be uncollectable, a recommendation was before Council to cancel the taxes in order to receive credit for the education requisition portion of the tax levies from the Provincial government.

In all, 15 tax rolls and penalties totalling $11,756.81 were cancelled, which allows administration to apply for a PERC (Provincial Education Requirements Credit) which will return the education requisition portion of the total tax rolls back to Flagstaff County.

Council reviewed and approved Flagstaff Waste Management’s 2024 budget and requisition, with a 0 per cent per capita increase, of $513,982.53 for the County’s portion.

Council approved a request from the Galahad and District Ag Society to provide a letter of support for that organization’s grant application for funds to upgrade the building complex. As a hamlet of Flagstaff County, the county is the title holder of the property.

Council also voted to donate $1,500 plus a gift basket to the 2024 FIRST Dinner and Auction, something that successive Councils have done since 2015.

Council approved the 2024 Parkland Library budget, with a requisition of $9.18 per capita, up 0.43 from 2023’s figure of $8.75.

It's been a weekend for the arts. The Flagstaff Players hosted their “Christmas Gone Wrong” performances at the Sedgewick Community Hall. I hope you had a chance to see it. The turkey dinner on Saturday was delicious and the play hit just the right notes of fun and entertainment. So great to see our local talent and be able to support them! Ruby Venema was the lucky winner of the “Christmas Gone Wrong” greenery draw. The Play-

ers are now gearing up for their big spring production “The Play Gone Wrong” and invite everyone interested to audition on Wednesday, Dec. 6. The play will be performed two weekends in April.

This is your chance! Don't miss it!

Another opportunity to admire the arts was on the Battle River Rail Excursion with a Christmas themed murder mystery. Again, some local talent was involved. The acting was done by a group out of Camrose this year. Congratulations all around to a performances well done!

Flagstaff County announced their annual Santa Event for Thursday, Dec. 7. It's no wonder my

kids think the County Building is Santa’s workshop. It's a family favourite to attend, get a picture with Santa, tell him about their wish list and snag some cookies, juice, or hot chocolate and an advent calendar. Thank you to Flagstaff County for continuing to host this event.

The bowling team of Carol Lucas, Daren Lien, and Richard and Verna Erickson took part in a Bowling Challenge in Ponoka last week and won! It was the Alberta 55+ Zone and aren't we thrilled they represented Sedgewick this well? Congratulations to the team!

OBITUARIES

Margaret Helen Robinson

Margaret was born Aug. 20, 1936, in Parry Sound, Ontario, the third of seven children, to Ruby (nee Michaelis) and Frank Robertson at the height of the Great Depression with the gathering of the clouds of the Second world War on the horizon.

Life was hard, losing her father at the tender age of nine, leaving her Mom to raise the children on her own, with the youngest only being born a few months after her father's death.

This contributed to Mom’s work ethic; she started working at 12 years old, taking calls at Browns Taxi, babysitting, and

scrubbing Grannie's outhouse every Saturday.

She'd receive 25 cents for this job and with that she could go to the pictures every Saturday, where for 12 cents you could see the Pathe News of the war going on, a cartoon, and the main feature, and still have 13 cents left over!

This was her solace and brought light into not only her own personal life, but also very much improved the life of her family.

Later, at 15, Mom met Dad, a pilot, while working at Deer Horn Lodge, an island resort on the beautiful Georgian Bay. They were married in 1955, when Mom was 19. The minister must have had a fun time figuring out this marriage, as the bride was Margaret Robertson, the maid of honor was Margie Robertson, the groom was Duncan Robinson and the best man was Nick Robertson! No relations!

They had five children; Heather, Kevin, Perry, Karen, and Bruce. Eventually, Dad's work took the

family out west to Edmonton area. Unfortunately, things fell apart for the family and Mom and Dad split.

Over the years Mom would alternate her home between Alberta and Parry Sound, finally settling in Sedgewick in 2002, where she lived a happy life until retiring into assisted living in Killam in March of this year.

Mom had many jobs, mainly working as a bookkeeper, but some of the happiest times of her life were spent as a light house keeper on the Georgian Bay. She loved the quiet yet dramatic setting of the lighthouses. Here she would spend many happy hours fishing, picking wild leeks and other foods, and painting. This was an idyllic place to explore her love of painting. She was a talented artist.

Mom was also an avid gardener and I used to joke that she could stick a broom handle in dirt and get it to grow!

Mom loved to read, had

strong opinions and a wicked sense of humor!

What a grand story teller too! Mom also celebrated her Scottish heritage with cherished fond memories of her Daddy reciting poetry of Robbie Burns and Robert Service and singing classic Scottish songs. She reveled in her son in law, Ian, playing the bagpipes.

Mom leaves to cherish her memory five children: Daughter Heather, grandchildren Carrie Kevin and Meghan, Son Kevin (Lena), Son Perry (Darlene), grandson Christopher (Freddie), and great-granddaughters Riley and Quinn; grandson Tristan, and their blended family; granddaughter Wendy, great-grandson Justin (Jenna), great-great granddaughter Hailey; greatgranddaughter Jenna (Hayden); granddaughter Sandy (Ken) great-granddaughter Chayse; grandson Ryan (Selina) great-grandson, Carter; grand twins Cadance and Casey, great-granddaughter Daneille (Jon), great-

grandsons Nate and Ty; her Daughter Karen (Ian) and grandson Thomas (Sheri), great-grandson Noah; granddaughter Stephanie (Mike), greatgrandsons Matthew and Daniel; and Son Bruce (Colleen). She also leaves to mourn her sole surviving sibling George Robertson.

Mom left a lasting impression on everyone who met her and she will be forever remembered.

A Celebration of Life will

be held at the Killam Legion on Friday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. A heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Killam Long Term Care for their compassionate care of Mom is gratefully appreciated. Memorial donations can be made to the Killam Long Term Care.

On Monday the Women’s Institute (WI) had our long-anticipated trip to the Alberta Legislature. Unfortunately, several who planned on going were not able to on Monday.

Julia Feltham, Odette Dionne, and I met up with Dorothy Fisher in Daysland. Dorothy is our member from Halkirk.

Odette drove so I had a nice relaxing trip. I was the only one of the group who had never been to Bonnie Doone Mall where we made our lunch stop.

MLA Jackie Lovely met us and had pictures taken on the steps before we went in. An aide led us through the security and registration check on the route to the gallery. We were given a brochure of rules for spectators, quiet, no applause, no moving when the Speaker was standing, nothing to be put on the ledge (One woman in another group put her hand on the ledge

to peer over and was promptly warned.) There were several other groups being introduced that day.

Each MLA introduced his or her guests. Jackie Lovely introduced us individually as we stood.

There was a procession before the Speaker took his chair. A prayer was offered before the proceedings. We observed that democracy is a very inefficient process, though it is still the best. The opposition, unfortunately, is heavy on opposing whether a proposition is a good idea or not. The party in power would do well to listen to some of the ideas coming from the other side, too.

Since the back seat of Odette’s van was empty, she took us to her house in Edmonton and we filled it up with boxes to bring to Alliance.

We had a chance to have a look at the beautiful building and displays.

One thing I found interesting was the display of flags in the rotunda. They were old regimental flags which hang there until they are in no condition to be displayed. They cannot be altered or repaired.

McPherson have just returned from a three week tour of New Zealand and Australia. They liked the difference between the two countries.

New Zealand was so green and lush. They saw a lot of Australia on the tour, but are glad to be home.

On Friday evening Julia Feltham, Gloria Coates, and I had dinner in Three Hills and then attended the theatre performance of Little Match Girl. Julia’s granddaughter, Rachel Peterkin was in the cast. It was a lovely evening. Julia stayed overnight so she could go to a grandson’s hockey game on Saturday.

I went to an 8 and under hockey game in Strathmore on Saturday morning to watch Logan Eicher, son of John and Britany.

On Sunday I visited the Eichers at the farm by Standard on my way from Brooks where I visited with granddaughter Candice, Stuart, Lucas, and Nicole Nickols.

Ashley Robinson made me supper in Calgary on Saturday. Ashley grew up in our area, attended school in Forestburg. She calls me grandma. It was far to long between visits.

I will see her sister, Christie on Monday.

Christie is recently engaged to my grandson Steven.

I have volunteered to do the Regional UCW books.

They use QuickBooks.

Getting set up for QuickBooks is not quick.

Community Press. We hope that most of them can be passed out at Santa Daze on Dec. 9. I have been asked for some phone sheets to be at market, too.

Marjorie (Bain) Thompson

It is with profound sadness that the family of Marjorie (Bain) Thompson announces her peaceful passing on November 24, 2023, at the age of 85.

Marjorie is survived by her beloved husband, Bud Thompson; half sisters, Yvonne Joy, and Heather Kathleen; children, Oren Micheal, Rory Philip, Kelly Ann, Jefferson, James Lee, and Timothy Shane; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends.

Marjorie was predeceased by her parents Cleo Madge (Winchester) Bain and James Cameron Bain. Her older Brother

Wayne, her half sister Patricia, Iris Lydia, and two sons, Ivan Wade and Patrick Robert.

Marjorie was a lover of flowers and the outdoors.

She was creative, enjoyed painting, and spent many years on the Thompson farm with her husband, Bud, running a greenhouse, woodworking, and ceramic business.

A celebration of life for Marjorie will be held later, during her very favorite time of year, in the

spring of 2024.

Vera Isabelle Brausen (December 18, 1930 November 20, 2023) Vera Isabelle Brausen of Daysland, Alberta, passed away on Monday, Nov. 20, 2023, at the age of 92 years.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Neil Brausen (Sherry Ferrel), Butch (Faye) Brausen, Colleen Froehler, Brian Brausen (Tresa Loustel), Colin (Karen) Brausen, Shawna (Pat) Hayes, and Rhonda (Philip) Bexson; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-

Korey was born May 16, 1974, to Hennie and Brian in Fort McMurray, AB, and grew up in Sedgewick, AB, as the oldest of three.

By the time he was in his teens he had already found his passion for all things mechanical. He started his career in AG, moving to heavy duty, and spending most of his career in automotive, holding dual tickets.

Korey and Cynthia were lucky enough to find each other while young and married in July 2000. Their love

gave them three wonderful children and over 26 years together. Korey enjoyed tinkering on projects, mountain biking, reading, and most of all spending time with his kids and wife wherever that was. Sadly, he was taken from us far too soon by a cruel disease.

He was predeceased by many loved ones and is survived by so many more.

His wishes through his illness and going forward were for everyone to live life as normally as possible, to celebrate and appreciate all we still have. To hold your loved ones close and enjoy your time.

Battle River U15 Female Knights (6-1-1) downed Lloydminster on the road on Saturday 5-0. Scoring for BR were; Emma Galletly (2g), Brittyn Zentner, Grace Dolany and Bria Sayer. Assists went to; Alivia Motley (2a), Alexis Gumann, and Langston Fee. Maddison Eckstrand got the shutout. On Sunday at Killam, BR skated to a 2-2 tie with Irma Aces.

Alexis Gumann and Keeley Sorken scored for BR. Assists went to; Emma Galletly, Grace Dolany, and Langston Fee. Battle River U18 Female Knights (4-1-1) downed Vermilion on Saturday 4-3 at Killam Arena. Surai Thomson scored twice,

and Mercedee Wildeman and Kora Lefsrud also connected. Assists went to; Kherington Paterson, Avery Dolany, and Bailey Djos.

Abbygail Krys picked up the win with 26 saves.

Thunderstars U11 (3-1-0) split games over the weekend. On Saturday, TS beat Clive 5-4 at Daysland.

Scorers were; Ty Wiltse (2g), Cohen McKay, Jase Bendfeld, and Wells Weiss.

Callen Thomas got the win in goal. On Sunday at Forestburg, Jase Bendfeld and Ty Wiltse scored in a 32 loss against Camrose.

Bentley Booy picked up an assist.

Hughenden U11 Jets (48-0) dropped two games over the weekend. On Saturday at home, Jets lost 162 against Edgerton/Chauvin with Reuben Congdon (1g 1a) and Jax Piller scoring. Assists went to; Bo Anhorn and Kahle Peacock. On Sunday, Jets dropped an 84 game at Onion Lake.

Scoring for Jets were; Gaige Hunter (1g 1a), Laine Ference (1g 1a), Jax Piller (1g), Reuben Congdon (1g), and Emmett Peacock (1a).

Battle River U11 (1-2-0) dropped an 8-2 game on Saturday against Ponoka, but rebounded with an 8-7 win over Blackfalds at Sedgewick on Sunday with Braden Swainson scoring five times. Other scorers were; Grady Bergseth (1g 1a), Kaelin Miller (1g 1a), and Greyson Eckstrand. Assists went to; Brady Wesley, Bentley Clark, Carter Anderson, Beau Baumgartner, and Kale Dickson. Lane Jackson got the win in goal. In Saturday’s loss, Braden Swainson and Kaelin Miller scored for BR. Hughenden U13 Jets (81-1) hosted Irma on Saturday and beat the visitors 6-4. Irma jumped in from 3-1 in the first but Jets came back to tie, then once again tying the contest in the middle frame at 4-4.

Jets scored the only two third period goals. Quinn Holte (2g 1a), and Jaxon Sayer both scored twice.

Liam Flynn (1g 1a) and Holly Motley also scored.

Reid Walters (2a), Alexander Ference (2a), Jacob Redekop, and Myer Bomersback got assists.

Flagstaff Players presents Christmas Gone Wrong Leslie Cholowsky Editor

This past weekend the Flagstaff Players presented their Christmas Variety show “Christmas Gone Wrong,” at the Sedgewick Community Hall, playing Friday and Saturday.

The show including everything but the kitchen sink, there was pantomime, humour, poetry, song, and some real twists on common Christmas traditions and stories.

Brenda Grove put a whole new perspective on ‘Santa Baby’

The show was presented with a series of skits in the first and second acts, featuring a large cast of characters covering a wide range of material, from original stories to old favourites with a twist.

There were heart-rending moments and laugh-out-loud comedy for a very entertaining and enjoyable evening for cast and audience.

Kudos go to the Flagstaff Players for a rollicking good time and a true variety show in every sense of the word.

What’s Christmas without a little Turkey Bingo gone wrong? Kaleb Dempsey played the cranky old lady.

A Bad Dad Jokes competition featuring Jacob Cornwell and Kaleb Dempsey and some real dads from the audience.

Janet Pelletier and Kari Fox-Newby played the ex-wives of Bob and Doug McKenzie.

Robbie Muirhead (left) and Josey Field both performed Christmas songs.

Avery Snethun, Claire Kobitzsch, and Anika Nickel performed a heartwarming ‘Dear Santa.’

Wheat Kings drop two Sedgewick Curling Club presents Sedgewick games on the road in Farmers Bonspiel weekend play Dec 12th to 15th Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Killam Jr. B Wheat Kings were on the road this weekend, facing games against the league-leading Wainwright Bisons and St. Paul Canadiens.

On Friday, Nov. 24, the team travelled to Wainwright, coming out with a 9-2 loss.

The Bisons started strong, scoring four goals before the Wheat Kings Kale Hurlburt scored late in the first period, from Keegan McArthur and Trey Forster, to make it 4-1.

Chase Rombough scored Killam’s second goal, from Brady Parchoma, to make it 4-2.

Wainwright stuffed in a last second goal to make it 5-2 at the end of the period.

Killam didn’t manage another goal, with the Bisons scoring two more in each of the second and third periods for a 9-2 final.

Ty Marcinkowski took the loss in goal, saving 48 of 57 shots, with the Bison goaltender facing 29 shots from the Wheat Kings.

The Wheat Kings headed to St. Paul

on Saturday, Nov. 25, to take on the Canadiens.

The Canadiens got out in front midway through the first period with two goals, before Killam’s Aidan Borgel scored one for the Wheat Kings, from Chase Rombough and Trey Forster, to make it 2-1 at the end of the first period of play.

There was no scoring in the second, but St. Paul came back in the third with another pair of goals to make it a 4-1 loss for the Wheat Kings. Marcinkowski saved 37 of 40 shots, while Killam recorded just 14 shots on the night.

Weekend play put the St. Paul Canadiens on top of the league, with 26 points, with the Wainwright Bisons, Vermilion Tigers, and Lloydminster Bandits tied for second place with 20 points each. Killam is in fifth place with 17 points, Cold Lake Ice in sixth with 11 points, and the Onion Lake Border Chiefs and Vegreville Rangers are still looking for their first wins of the season.

The Wheat Kings will return home this Friday, Dec. 1, where they will host the Wainwright Bisons, and will be looking for a better result. Game starts at 8 p.m.

Well hello folks. Our little community is getting all geared up for the various Christmas celebrations and events. The Christmas trees are sparkling and businesses are looking so welcoming. Even our United Church sanctuary is looking like Christmas.

Fay Bronson and Elaine Endicott spent a significant amount of time changing the decor for the Christmas season. We thank you both for all your efforts and know how much the parishioners appreciate it.

Church remains at 11:30 a.m. and we will wake you up with the chiming of the church bells: ding-dong, ring-ring. Come on down and join us.

Our little granddaughter came over the other morning with her parents and they were all decked out in Carhartt clothing. I asked my daughter-in-law where

they bought Erika's overalls. To my surprise I was informed that the original owner of the overalls is now 13 years old and three little boys have worn this clothing since then and now our granddaughter is.

I was amazed at the quality of this clothing so I did a little research. The Carhartt company is an American company that was founded in 1889. They were known for their heavy duty work clothes such as jackets, coats, overalls, vests, shirts, jeans, fire resistant clothing, and even hunting apparel.

The company started with two sewing machines and five workers. Their slogan was "Honest value for an honest dollar."

I know that our thrift shop workers get pretty excited when someone donates those mustard, khaki, and navy blue jackets. They always sell and now I know why. Even rock stars are being cool and wearing this clothing line. Boy, this is an amazing company. Their headquarters are located in

Dearborn, Michigan. Their revenue in 2013 was $600 million and they employed 5,500 employees at that time. Interesting isn't it?

A few ladies were chatting the other day about decorating our Christmas trees and the topic came up about tinsel. Does anyone hang tinsel on their trees anymore and can you even purchase it? In my youth in the 50s and 60s our tree was laden in silver tinsel, balls, and little white lights. We thought it was just grand.

I did a little research on tinsel. It was first introduced in Germany in the 1600s. At that time tinsel was made of streaks of real silver that had been hammered into long strips.The silver was supposed to reflect the candlelight when people still had real candles that were lit on their trees... yikes! Think of all the fires.

Different materials were used throughout the years before finally settling on an economical type we use to this day. Today you can purchase a bag of tinsel for

less than $5. Tinsel really attracts young children and cats and dogs and they can ruin a tree in no time.

Animals have been known to ingest tinsel, causing bowel blockages.

In January 1972, manufacturers were convinced of the harm of lead in tinsel and stopped producing the tinsel that contained lead. Apparently nowadays tinsel is metallized plastic, mostly Mylar. So there you have it.
