Saric went on to say, “I have instructed our staff to post copies of the notice on our town website and social media platforms. If it is within our legal right to do so, we will also send flyers our to all our residents.

We have been advised by the RCMP that we should not post photos in public areas as we may be crossing legal lines. We will be consulting with our lawyers to determine exactly what we can and can not do.”

Christmas celebrations were in full swing in the Village of Andrew on Sunday, November 26.

There was skating at the arena, Christmas Market at the community centre and official light up to mark the start of the holiday season. The Village of Andrew also presented its yard contest winners with prizes in the evening. Kudos go to the volunteers, crafters, bakers, and of course, Santa for making the day merry and bright.

LES newshounds ready to sniff out the real stories

By Megan Desrochers and Mrs. Wisselink The Lamont Elementary Junior News Team is ready to bring you all the news from our school.

We will be reporting on special events, important visitors, classroom happenings, exciting new clubs, and leadership opportunities. We would like to share with the Lamont community our successes and achievements.

Each week our hardworking reporters will prepare a newspaper article which will give you a glimpse into the exciting events of our school.

Lamont Elementary School is a Leader in Me School and part of our mandate is to encourage leadership abilities in all our students. Our motto is “Ignite the Leader Within”. In October, all students were invited to

a Job Fair where they could apply for in-school jobs such as lunch monitors, chair committee, photographers, library leaders, tech crew, safety patrollers, the green team, the ignition, and our student council.

Some of the new jobs this year include Oscar’s Garbage Grabbers, Zipper Uppers – Coat Patrollers, Welcome Wagon Greeters, and Attendance Fairies.

Our reporter, Meagan Desrochers, interviewed Mr. Robertson, Assistant Principal of Lamont Elementary, and asked why we have created the jobs and Job Fair. He responded, “We have the job fair so that everyone in Grades 1-6 has the opportunity to be a leader in the school. We want to provide opportunities for students to help make LME a better place.” When asked if it was hard to organize to

the jobs for students and then chose students for the jobs? He replied, “Yes it was very hard to try and give everyone their first or second choice because some jobs were very popular. And I could not give everyone their first choice even though I wanted to.”

Megan also spoke to Mrs. Calder, who is in charge of the Lamont News Network (LNN) “I think it will be a challenge because right now the students know more about the recording technology than I do.”

Our team of news reporters have been meeting once a week brainstorming interesting school stories and learning about writing news reports.

Municipalities have until January 15, 2018 to apply for the Provincial Education Requisition Credit (PERC).

Under PERC, municipal districts and counties in Alberta will be able to apply for a credit on the education component of their property tax, and the credit will be retro active to 2015 when oil prices began to fall, and will operate until 2019.

Robyn Singleton, Chief Administrative Officer for Lamont County, said administration will have to do some research and calculations in order to determine how much money they will be eligible to apply for.

While the change has been something Lamont County and other rural municipalities had been lobbying for, the news was announced during the recent fall convention of the Alberta Association of Municipal

Districts and Counties (AAMD&C) in Edmonton.

During his address to delegates, Municipal Affairs Minister Shaye Anderson stated: “I heard loud and clear during my visits to rural communities this summer that they are facing tax recovery challenges.

So we made this a priority and worked with the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties to come up with a solution. I am proud that we are able to make a difference and support municipalities.”

In response, AAMD&C President Al Kemmere stated: “The AAMD&C is very appreciative of Minister Anderson and his cabinet colleagues, listening to municipalities about this challenge. Having to pay education tax to the government that couldn’t be collected has created significant financial challenges for our members. With the govern-

According to Municipal Affairs, PERC will be funded through the Alberta School Foundation Fund’s net asset fund. It applies only to oil and gas properties that have had their municipal tax written off. It will not apply to other types of uncollectable municipal property tax, or to seniors’ housing requisitions. These issues are being reviewed by the province and stakeholders.

A cost estimate of the program will be determined once applications have been received from municipalities first intake, which covers the first three years of the program (2015-2017).

There is a cap of $10 million per year.”

National Child Day activities held at Mundare Srs. Centre Michelle Pinon Editor

A total of 35 children and 22 parents celebrated National Child Day activities at the Mundare Seniors Centre on Sunday, Nov. 19.

This was the first year the Early Steps To Success Coalition had hosted the event, and Co-ordinator Michelle Andriashyk was very pleased with the overall attendance. Children were treated to entertainment from a magician, balloon twister, and visit from Santa Claus throughout the afternoon.

Parents also took home information bags on how to keep kids safe, domestic violence and the UN Rights of Children.

Andriashyk wanted to recognize the efforts of volunteers Betty Farris and Carol Lynn Babiuk “who are always there for us,” and was very grateful for all of their support. The Early Steps To Success Coalition consists of community members and service providers that meet bimonthly. The goal is to improve, create and refer you to services and resources for children in Lamont County 0-6 years of age. Parents and Tots, Play Mob, Pre-School Summer Camps, and Home Visitation Programs are just some of the groups and activities the organization operates throughout the year.

In fact, Early Steps To Success was

one of hundreds of organizations throughout Canada which hosted special events. In Ottawa 30 children and young people gathered for a National Summit to begin the Canadian Childrens Charter, a plan of action to respect, protect and fulfill the rights of our children.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated: “Together we must make sure children everywhere get the love, safety, and support they need to live a full childhood and pursue their dreams.”

Trudeau pointed out that the Government of Canada through the Canada Child Benefit (CCB), is putting more money in the pockets of Canadian families to help them with the high costs of raising their children.

“The CCB has helped lift 300,000 children out of poverty. We will strengthen the CCB by increasing the benefits annually to keep pace with the rising cost of living, starting July, 2018.”

Last March the federal government committed $75 billion over 11 years to support early learning and child care, and make high quality affordable child care available to more Canadian families. “As part of this investment, we will establish, in cooperation with Indigenous communities a distinct Indigenous Early Learning and Child Care Framework that reflects the unique cultures and needs of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis children.”

Christmas in the Country, held at the St. Michael Recreation Centre on Saturday, November 18 was a great success. There were more than 30 vendors and a crowd of 400 shoppers who enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere, beautifully decorated venue, tasty perogy and kubasa lunch. Volunteers Sherry Stadnick, Edie Benson Astle and Roseanne Berube definitely got in the spirit of things with Santa. A large box of food as well as $485 was raised for the Lamont County Food Bank.

The 2017 Fall Volleyball season was a success for the Andrew School Sr Girls Volleyball Team. This is the first high school team we have had in Andrew for three years, and the girls had a great year. The girls brought home hardware in multiple tournaments this year: JR Robson, Lac La Biche and their home tournament.

They fought hard in League 5 all year and ended up just missing out on a zone berth this year with a second place finish behind Smoky Lake.

Bruderheim Bruins claw their way to the top

Members of the Bruderheim Bruins Atom team won the gold medal match on Sunday, November 26 in Lamont.The Bruins beat the Wetaskiwin Vipers 3-1 to win the championship title. A total of eight teams participated in the two day Lamont Hawks Atom Tournament that was held Nov. 25 and 26.
