Daysland quilters donate to Quilts of Valour to support members of Canada’s Armed Forces Members of the Daysland Crocus Quilters have eight quilts completed and ready to be sent to the national Quilts of Valour program, who support Canadian Armed Forces members past and present by presenting them with a quilt when they are injured or ill. The quilters had previously sent 24 completed quilt tops to the program since learning about it last year. In Sedgewick a colour party and piper will parade to the Main Street Cenotaph from the Fire Hall. It is suggested that members of the public gather by 10:30 a.m. and those wishing to participate in the walk to the cenotaph are welcome to.

Bandits steal back win in another tough weekend for Wheaties Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Killam Jr. B Wheat Kings played once on the weekend and then again on Monday evening.

On Saturday, Nov. 2, the Wheaties headed up to Lloydminster to meet the Bandits in a tough rematch that didn’t go their way. The Bandits jumped on the scoreboard first, scoring two in the second period, then starting the second period with a power play goal seconds into the period.

Killam answered with a goal from Aidan Borgel, assisted by Carter Hogman, to make it 3-1 before the Bandits

doubled down and scored another four goals to make it 7-1 heading into the third.

A final Lloydminster goal made it an 8-1 final, not the ending the Wheat Kings were hoping for. Shots on goal were lopsided, at 43-20 for Lloyd, with Kailum Grove taking the loss in goal for Killam.

After a day to lick their wounds, the Wheat Kings headed to Vegreville Monday night to take on the Rangers. After a high scoring 10-7 game last time these two teams met on Oct. 25, Killam was hoping to keep up the goals and shut down the Rangers’ offence.

Unfortunately they weren’t completely successful, ending the night with a 9-4

loss.

Jordan Gagnon scored two of the four Wheat Kings goals on Monday evening, from Carter Hogman and Brady Parchoma then from Kyler Bergseth and Ben Lang. Evan Golby scored from Carson Leroux and Hunter Sullivan, and Tyler Krys scored from Bergseth.

Ryan Stepanick was the starting goalie for the Wheat Kings, with Kailum Grove coming in mid-game. Shots on goal were 45-39 for the Rangers.

Tempers were high with lots of penalty minutes on both sides, three of Killam’s four goals were power play goals.

The Wheat Kings are still on the road

this coming weekend, travelling to St. Paul to take on the Canadiens on Saturday, Nov. 9, then travelling to Wainwright on Sunday, Nov. 10, to face the Bisons for the first time this season.

The Lloydminster Bandits have risen to top spot in the league, with a 9-1-0 record and 18 points. Vermilion has a game in hand, at 7-2-0 and 14 points, while Vegreville has played 11 games with a 7-4-0 record and 14 points. St. Paul has an identical 7-4-0 record. The Bisons are sitting at 6-5-0 and 12 points, while Killam has played 10 games with a 4-6-0 record. Cold Lake is 2-8-0 after 10 games, and Onion Lake is still seeing their first win of the season.

For the past 20 years, The Community Press has hosted a special Christmas Sharing Tree promotion, collecting money for Flagstaff’s Christmas Sharing Program run by FFCS and the Flagstaff Food Bank.

The promotion raised a whopping $7,000 in 2021, which was higher than any previous year, but right in line with dents have been

annual totals.

In 2022, that figure got blown completely out of the water with a final total of $10,500.

In 2023, we set our sights low, thinking that we could never reach that amount again, and were astonished when the final total was $10,910.

At a modest $5 per name (suggested), we are once again collecting names on the tree in our Killam Main Street office.

So far over $2,000 has come in.

Negotiations between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) continue, with no strike action filed as was feared Sunday.

Both sides have said that the negotiations to date have not been as productive as they’d hoped.

Any risk of a strike or lockout requires 72 hours of notice, and CUPW has warned that a strike notice could be issued at any time if talks break down.

Canada Post has offered annual wage

increases of 11.5 per cent over four years. Last Wednesday the union said the offer “is far from what we are demanding and deserve.”

In the event of a labour disruption, and based on our talks with Canada Post employees, Caribou Publishing is hopeful that the majority of readers would still receive papers in their mailboxes.

Rural readers will be instructed of pickup locations where they can grab a paper in the event there is no other way to access their mail.

RCMP: Ghouls break into Food Mart on Halloween Killam RCMP Detachment Report for the period of Friday, Oct. 25 to Thursday, Oct. 31 Friday, Oct. 25 Three suspicious vehicles were reported parked at an approach near Highway 13 and 855. No description of the occupants. No licence plate obtained. Patrols made. Vehicles not located.

Saturday, Oct. 26 A suspicious person was reported walking through a yard in Sedgewick.

The Subject was reported as making a hand gesture at the camera and continuing on. Subject not identified.

A black truck was reported on a property with a truck bed full of scrap metal.

A second Subject arrived and sped off then the other truck took off shortly after. Patrols made. Vehicles not located.

A black truck travelling west bound on Highway 13 driving erratically and almost going into the ditch. Patrols made and the vehicle was not located.

A transformer was reported found at a dump site near Forestburg. Patrols made. No transformer found, reported missing or any outages reported near by.

A report was made of a Subject on private property in Forestburg. The Subject was asked to leave and refused. Members attended and the Subject had left and not located.

A white Dodge Ram entered an oil lease site and took off when ap-

proached. Members patrolled the area.

Vehicle not located.

Sunday, Oct. 27 A report was made of a Subject in the alcove of a Doctor’s office. Members attended. Subject known to Members and arrangements made for transport to a shelter in Wetaskiwin.

Monday, Oct. 28 A report was made in Forestburg of someone driving on the Complainant’s lawn two weeks ago. Member attended.

Possible that the vehicle missed the turn.

An unoccupied Oil Lease site was reported broken into. Site has numerous break ins. Subjects used shovels to dig up wires in the ground. Member attended. No witnesses or suspects.

Tuesday, Oct. 29 Officers were called out to a dispute in Strome. The dispute was over moving boxes and $50. Officer attended, mediated, and advised the Subjects this was a civil issue and not a criminal matter.

Thursday, Oct. 31 The Forestburg Food Mart was reported broken into. Members attended the scene. Front window was smashed.

Video surveillance being reviewed. Still under investigation.

A report was made of a young Subject hitchhiking on Highway 856 near Forestburg. Patrols were made. Subject not located.

I hear that the Hallowe'en maze at the arena was a great success with close to 60 people one night alone. Doug Bullee and Ralph Davidson go to a lot of work to set up the bales and then take them out again.

May Flynn led the worship service at the United Church this Sunday. It was All Saints Sunday so the lesson was what makes a saint. There were 20 in the congregation.

Joey Serfas spent the weekend with his grandparents, Roger and Betty

Spady, and accompanied them to church, too.

Donna Chalifoux was to Edmonton to her sisters for three or four days this past week.

I met Paul K from Daysland on the plane to Cancun. He was next-door neighbour to Trudy Lamoriss when they were growing up.

Nice to be home, even after a really nice holiday. I can drink the water and clean my teeth in the tap water. I went to Playa Del Carmen with Dixie, Aaron, Deb, and my granddaughter Amy and her boyfriend. We had a great time. Amy and I hadn’t been on a holiday together for about six years.

I came home to a cold house. It took a bit to figure that there was no natural gas coming down the lines. I started the fireplace and the wood burner and called Phoenix Gas. Kevin would have come from Wainwright right away but it was 9:30 and the fires were going so I told him to come in the morning. He had the gas on by 8:15.

Someone had been fooling with the gas metre, removed one piece, and shut off the line to my place.

Thursday is WI meeting day so we will all be in town.

Daysland Arena was busy this last weekend with public skating all day 8-8 on Friday, as well as multiple hockey games on Saturday and Sunday.

Last month the LadyBug Picnic, a cute little dainty store with all sorts of treasures, celebrated their 10year anniversary. That's no easy feat, congratulations to them!

Also another darling store in Daysland, “The Rusty Daisy Gift Co.” won this year's Collaboration Award through the Small Business Awards through Flagstaff County.

As I opened a jar of pears for breakfast, I was thinking of Holly Tilstra who gave them to me.

Often I think of Emma Bullee when I butter my toast. Emma always said to put the butter out to the edge. I remember Norma French Heslep when I put my salad in a jar. My friends have taught me so much.

The first Christmas card was in the mail on Friday.

It was from Les and Terri Dammann in Valemount.

The date for the Community Christmas Concert is set for Friday Dec. 20 at 7 pm in the United Church. There are three acts so far. If you would like to participate, give me a call.

Well hello folks.

Hope life is treating you well and you are enjoying our fall weather.

Monday was glorious with all that sunshine and no ice rain or snow.

We all know that white stuff is coming but it would be so nice to have a sunny, no wind, Remembrance Day. I can't imagine how different the conversation would be if a soldier from WWII sat down with a modern-day soldier from our Canadian forces.

What would be similar is that absolutely wretched feeling when you have to “shoot to kill,” so you can save

your own life. Are those horrendous acts burned on your brain forever?

How do you even cope?

Folks think about it.

Can soldiers ever really explain this nightmare to civilians who have never experienced this horror.

You wonder why soldiers sit with other soldiers and have a few beer, a few smokes or a bit of weed. Their soldier buddies are really the only ones that understand having to kill another human. So next time you see a soldier give him or her a thumbs up, say “Thank you for your service.”

My sister lives in the USA and when I have visited I really noticed how the American public revere their army, navy, air force, and other protective services. They very openly and freely

thank them everywhere, the mall, the coffee shop, the hardware, and walking down the street. So remember to thank our forces and not only on Remembrance Day. Also folks think about the immigrants that have made Canada their home. Many still have loved ones that are experiencing the horrors of war. Be it the Ukraine or the middle east. Our televisions tell us one story but there are two sides to every war. Be kind and try to understand what so many immigrants have left behind. Be it parents, siblings, children, or friends. We are all so very lucky. Yes, we whine about the price of food, fuel, clothing etc.

But we have a roof over our heads, food in our belly, a bed to sleep in, and no bombs crashing through the night sky.

We are all VERY LUCKY. Thank the dear Lord or whomever you pray too.

We are truly blessed!

The Hardisty library was thrilled to receive a monetary donation and a wonderful book to add to our book collections.

It was titled, “Call Me Indian,” by Fred Sasakamoose. It talks about the Trauma of Residential School to becoming the NHL's First Treaty Indigenous Player. I imagine to many folks this will be an eye-opening read.

You would be surprised how many people were never aware of the horrors that were experienced at some of these residential schools.

Again, we can be grateful for our local school systems as compared to

residential schools and being taken from your homes and your parents.

Life is not perfect but darn I think we can all be grateful for life in Canada, it is pretty darn good. Thank you Esther J. for your kind donation.

I was excited to enjoy a fantastic popcorn ball the day after Halloween.

I was babysitting my granddaughter and one of my treats was a popcorn ball. Thank you to the wonderful lady that went to all the hard work of making these yummy balls. I was in heaven and I am sure numerous other adults were, too. The library enjoyed 30 Halloween visitors and they were so polite, thanking us for the treats. The Hardisty

Library board was so impressed at how tastefully our library assistant, Heidi decorated the whole library for Halloween. It was so festive, thank you.

Here is a tidbit of information about your pet dog from the book, “What is my dog thinking?” by Gwen Bailey.

Did you know that Terriers were originally bred to catch and kill small animals, such as rats and other creatures.

Their predatory instinct is strong, which is why they enjoy playing with squeaky toys that simulate the squeaks of a captured prey. Hmmm, interesting eh?

Flagstaff County debuts new small business awards Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Included in this year’s Flagstaff Celebrates Success were seven new Flagstaff Small Business awards.

The evening, a celebration of small business in the region held during small business week, has been held annually for a number of years. This year debuted a new series of awards for Flagstaff businesses at the event.

The first award was the Collaboration Award, described as: “This award highlights businesses that have not only excelled in their own right but have also gone above and beyond to form meaningful connections with other businesses, organizations, or community groups.”

The three top scoring nominations were Myo-kinetic Therapy, and Hom of Wellbeing, and The Rusty Daisy Gift Co., and the winner was Mandy Spiller of The Rusty Daisy from Daysland.

The second award of the evening celebrated businesses excelling in branding and marketing. The three nominees were Sweet Three Designs, Coldwell Banker-Ontrack Realty, and From, butter. The award was presented to Sweet Three Designs.

The next award was a Community Development Award, recognizing businesses that have gone above and beyond to make the community a better place for all. The nominees were HOM of Wellbeing, The James Insurance Group, and RTS Diesel and Parts. The award recipients was The James Insur-

ance Group, operating in Killam, Sedgewick, Lougheed, and Hardisty.

The fourth award of the evening was the New Business Recognition Award, celebrating a recently established business, or businesses under new ownership, who have already made a significant and positive impact on the community. The nominees were The Glam Shack, The Garage Beautique, and MacRae’s Farm and Ranch Supply. The award was given to MacRae’s Farm and Ranch Supply from Hardisty.

The fifth new award was the Physical Improvement Award, recognizing a business that has made significant enhancements to its physical appearance, “creating a welcoming and visually impactful presence in the community.”

The three nominees were Honeybee Convenience Store and Gas, The Hive, and Status Hair and Rural Root Collective. The winner was Honeybee Convenience Store and Gas from Sedgewick.

The sixth award was the Reliable Services Award, recognizing businesses with a reputation for consistently delivering dependable, high-quality service to customers. The three top nominees were Banjo Electric, Willow Hill Designs, and Iron Creek Truck and Trailer. The winner was Banjo Electric of Killam.

A final award was the Youth Involvement Award, celebrating business actively engaged with and supporting the younger generation in the community.

The top three nominated businesses were Amped Energy Services, Ball Family Dental, and Kall Tire.

The winner was Kal Tire of Sedgewick.

The new small business awards featured by Flagstaff County at its Flagstaff Celebrates Success evening were commissioned and created by Willow Hills Design, a Flagstaff County small business.

Killam RCMP welcomes familiar face back as newest Corporal Leslie Cholowsky Editor

When Corporal Jeremy Houle was promoted to Sargeant and transferred to the Coronation RCMP Detachment earlier this summer, his leaving left an opening in the Killam Detachment. The position was posted Canada wide, and caught the attention of Cst. Andrea Bole.

She applied for the position and was awarded it, and a promotion, this fall.

Bole is a familiar face around the Killam Detachment, having started her RCMP career here in 2006 fresh from Depot. She worked at the Detachment through to 2016, when she was transferred to Viking.

When Bole entered service with the RCMP, she had a Bachelor degree in Psychology from McGill University.

During her time in Killam and Viking, she continued her studies and this past August graduated with a Masters Degree in Counselling and Psychology from Athabasca University.

Bole says she has a passion for the study and treatment of PTSD and trauma, and that ties in well with some of the calls that members have to deal with.

During Bole’s time at the Killam Detachment, she started a family, and truly fell in love with the Flagstaff County community.

She says currently she’s still responding to calls in Killam and in Viking, but expects to move fully into the role of Corporal as vacancies in both detachments fill.

“Because I’ve lived in the community for so long, I hope to bring junior members into the community and into the schools, and help them to be more visible.

“I think that helps our members and the community.”

She adds, “That’s how I was brought in with Sgt. Phil Wilson, he got me out of the detachment, whether it was having coffee with the farmers, or attending grand openings.”

Bole is also presently actively working as a mentor in an Alberta pilot program through Alberta Women in Policing. The program encompasses women in all facets and areas of law enforcement. With her experience, she was selected as a mentor and has already been matched up with another person.

Bole is the first female corporal in the history of the Killam Detachment.

She’s also in a peer-to-peer advisory position, where she can provide advice, and referrals to professionals when the need arises.

“Having 18 years in community front line policing, I’ve been at the scenes for 18 years.”

She says she stays grounded through having her family, social support network, “and by having a very supportive community around me.”

Bole says living in a small community means that confidentiality is a very important aspect of her job. “I have very strict routines for keeping my work separate from my personal life. I compartmentalize; when my uniform is off, I’m a mom, a partner, and a community member.”

But Bole says she also has people approach her with policing issues while she’s off duty. She says, “That’s one of the strengths of being visible in your community.

There’s no overlap when I change my role, I hold myself to very strict interior confidentiality.

The Killam RCMP Detachment has a new but familiar face as Andrea Bole returns as Corporal after getting her start at the detachment and working for 10 years as a constable here.

“Being visible in the community is my ethical response to my role. The RCMP tells us that we are always police officers; we always have that responsibility.

“We also don’t have anonymity in a small community; but it’s my decision to help even when I’m not on duty.”

She’s now working as a corporal with fellow constables who were peers until her promotion.

“The detachment members are very respectful to my leadership feedback.

Our members know what they are doing. I’m here for guidance and support we’re all learning together.”

Because of her seniority, Bole has been in a leadership role anyway, she says, with predominantly junior members coming into the detachment. “Now I just have a title. I’m still just supporting them.”

As she has to go out to

fewer calls, Bole plans to undertake more community based actions. “I’d like us to be less reactive and more pro-active.”

She will also take advantage of any training opportunities available, while scheduling members, reviewing files, and providing guidance.

“There are a lot of crime reduction strategies coming down through the Eastern Alberta District, and I’m looking forward to sharing those with the detachment area.

“I love policing. I love my job, and I love this community. I love responding to victim’s needs for help and assistance, and using the knowledge I’ve gained over the past 18 years to mentor junior members coming from Depot. To guide them and to show leadership to these passionate, capable, knowledgeable new members.”

The Killam Detachment is

lucky right now, with a full complement of members, now that Bole and a new constable from Depot have arrived.

“I also consider myself very lucky to work with Sgt. Andy Wetzstein.

“He’s so knowledgeable about how policy works and has so much experience.

Our front counter staff, too, bring a wealth of experience and knowledge.”

Bole says that the Killam Detachment is also very fortunate to still have Victim Services personnel here.

“My project was Flagstaff Victim Services when I first came here in 2006.

“I’m also happy for opportunities to partner with FFCS and other services to support all the communities in Flagstaff County and Amisk.

“I have big shoes to fill with Corporal Houle’s former presence at the detachment and in the community.”

Welcome to Eric and Liberty Polege, who have moved to Sedgewick. Grandma Donna is pretty happy to have more grandkids in town.

Eric's parents, Larry and Sharon, were also here for a few days to help them settle in, before making the long drive back to Ontario.

The Friends of the Battle River Railway are holding a Volunteer Orientation on Friday, Nov. 15, at the Station in Forestburg.

If you are looking for a way to get involved with the community, this is a great opportunity! You also get the opportunity to explore your creative talents for costume design and decorating, meet new people and have fun with other volunteers. Of course you also get to ride the rails in their 1958 passenger car when acting as a host. I can just imagine all the fun they are having!

The Lougheed Hall Board Annual Christmas Market and Turkey Dinner is Sunday, Nov. 24. The market will run 10-3 with the dinner being served from 121:30. For tables or info please call Lorna.

Lougheed is also the spot to be this week if you have little ninjas in the making.

The Flagstaff Early childhood and youth coalition is bringing a popup ninja parkour to the Fieldhouse. Fitset Ninja will be at the Fieldhouse this Thursday, Nov. 7, with their obstacle course. Any future ninja warriors in the crowd? Go check it out!

The East Central Senior Hockey League saw some high-scoring games this weekend across the board.

The Hughenden Jets travelled to Coronation to take on the Royals on Friday night, coming away with a 10-7 win.

Brennan Anholt put the Jets on the scoreboard first with a goal assisted

by Nick Laporte, with the Royals answering a minute or two later to tie it up.

Jaret Smith scored, from Braden Crone and Blayd Anholt to go up by one, then Laporte scored, from Anholt and Brady Johnson, to widen the score to 3-1.

Logan Morrison put the Jets ahead 4-1, from Blayd Anholt and Johnson. The Royals scored on a power play in the last minute of the game to make it 4-2, then scored again at the 25 second mark to make it 4-3.

The Roylas tied it up 44 early in the second period, then pulled away with another goal making it 5-4 Royals, before Laporte scored his sec-

ond of the night, from Brennan Anholt and Morrison to tie it up.

Braden Crone scored his second goal for the Jets to pull away 6-5, assisted by Jaret Smith and Cameron Dion, then Morrison scored his second of the night, unassisted, to make it 7-5, before the Royals scored on a power play to make it 7-6.

Brennan Anholt scored his hat trick third, unassisted, to make it 8-6 heading into the final period.

Coronation scored a short-handed goal in the third to come within one to 8-7, before Braden Crone scored his third for a hat trick, assisted by Tanner Dion, then an unassisted empty netter fourth goal to make it a 10-7 final. Calvin Martin got the win in goal for the Jets, shots were 47-35 Hughenden.

Also on Friday the Wainwright Rustlers, new kids on the block, headed to Sedgewick’s home opener to take on the Sabres. Dalton Zemanek scored the opening goal for Sedgewick, from Kyle Sanders and Ryan Guhle, then Jesse

Reeds scored the Sabres second point on a power play, from Clay Lang and Curtis McKinlay.

Lang scored later in the period, from McKinlay and Zemanek to make it 3-0, then Zemanek ended the period with his second of the night, from Sanders and Carter Ortman to make it 4-0 Sabres heading into period two.

There was no scoring in the second period. In the third, Wainwright managed to score their only goal, for a 401 win for the Sabres. Travis Child got the win in goal for Sedgewick, shots were 48-45 for the Sabres.

On Saturday the Forestburg Flyers headed to Stettler to face the Imperials.

Stettler got on the scoreboard first, scoring two before Ben Roth scored the Flyers first and only goal of the night, from Drew Bish. The Imperials scored once more in the first to make it 3-1, before scoring two goals in the second period and two in the third period for a 7-1 final for Stettler.

Brendan Davis took the loss in goal for the Flyers, facing 52 shots, with 32 shots on goal from

Forestburg.

Also on Saturday, Delburne forfeited to Hughenden.

After weekend play, Oyen and Hughenden have four points each and are tied for first place, while Provost and

Irma are sitting at three points apiece. Tied for fifth place are Wainwright, Stettler, Forestburg, Sedgewick, and Delburne with a win and a loss each, while Coronation is still seeking their first win.

Daysland Quilters honour veterans through Quilts of Valour program participation

The Daysland Crocus Quilters group has been busy making quilts to donate to the Quilts of Valour program. The program has presented quilts to thousands of recipients who are coping with injuries both visible and invisible.

Members of Daysland’s Crocus Quilters group are proud to remember veterans this year through their participation in the national program called Quilts of Valour. The program’s mission is to support injured Canadian Armed Forces members past and present with quilts of comfort.

Dorothy Wieschorster, an active member, says they found out about how to participate in the Quilts of Valour program just last year. Since then, they’ve sent 24 quilts, and have eight more ready to go this month.

Quilts of Valour started in 2006 in Edmonton when a local quilter there presented quilts to three Canadian Armed Forces members recovering in hospital from injuries they received serving in Afghanistan.

Quilter Lezley Zwaal said it was her way of saying ‘thank you’ and giving some comfort to these military members. She says she wasn’t prepared for the impact that meeting them and learning first-hand of their injuries would make on her.

As a result, the organization was formed as a registered national charity in 2009, and since

then has presented thousands of quilts to recipients across Canada.

This includes two Daysland residents and veterans, Bob Hanrahan and Victor Gabruck, who were both presented with quilts before they passed away.

Group members say they wish that Gordon Pennycook had received a quilt before his passing, and all agree that they would love to see Jim Gillespie receive one.

The Crocus Quilters group must adhere to the guidelines of the organization, which includes using new fabrics only, making the quilt a minimum of a single bed size, and using fabrics with prints appropriate for a Canadian Armed Forces member, with preference given to quilts with a Canadian theme.

The local quilters finish the fronts of the quilts, and hand them off to the organization to add the batting and backing, as well as a special label.

The Daysland Crocus Quilters have 11 members who meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at their new building just off Main Street in Daysland.

The building was purchased

by Wieschorster two years ago, after the group had moved around so much prior to that.

She said, “I thought if the group wants to come here and work, that would be great, and if not, well, I would use it for my own studio.” Of course the members embraced the opportunity to have a dedicated quilting space, and now even leave their machines and partially completed projects there between working days.

“We’re not a formal group; we do have meetings. It was a group decision to add Quilts of Valour to the other groups we support, which include Bags of Love and the Women’s Shelter.” This year so far they’ve contributed 188 quilts to the Bags of Love program, too.

They do receive quite a bit of donated materials, which definitely is what contributes to the group being able to donate so many quilts, and for which they are very grateful.

Some members say they never start a Bags of Love quilt without imagining a child opening it; others say they do that when they’ve completed a quilt to be donated.

“I’d love to actually be there when the quilts are handed out,” says member Denise Miller.

Change in the works as FFCS enacts succession plan Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Changes are in the works at Flagstaff Family and Community Services (FFCS), but thanks to long-term planning, a smooth transition of power is expected with the coming retirement of Executive Director Lynne Jenkinson and hiring of Stacey McLennan as her replacement.

Jenkinson clearly communicated to her board that it was her intention to retire at age 60.

“Why 60? Because I’ve seen too many people hang on to 67 or 70, then they are tired and bitter, or they stay on, but just stop working. I’m not going to do that.

“That’s why we hand-picked a replacement and made the recent announcement. It takes a load off my shoulders, physically and mentally.

“Stacey is coming in to a very strong team supporting her.”

McLennan has been working at FIRST for the past 30 days, refamiliarizing herself with the organization.

Jenkinson says, “Nobody really knows until they come here exactly what we do. We are FFCS, FIRST, and the Flagstaff Community Foundation.”

Jenkinson will have put in 16 years with the organization, 14 as director, on her retirement next February.

She says she was hired back then as part of a succession plan, working at FFCS for two years before transitioning to director.

With a loose transition plan in place, it changed when Jenkinson actually announced her retirement, and it fell to her to recruit her own replacement.

“We had contacted Stacey, and interviewed and hired her, but out of respect for her long-time employer and co-workers, wanted to wait before any announcement was made. We didn’t even leak it to our board.

“The board had extreme faith in us.”

It was a full-circle moment for McLennan, who’d applied for the job back when Jenkinson was hired.

Born and raised in Flagstaff, she still has deep connections to the community.

“In the end, I wanted to be respectful to my employer of the last 15 years, and work mates. A change like this doesn’t happen without a lot of thought, but

I’m comfortable and secure in my decision.

“The work here will continue in the way it was intended.”

McLennan says that FFCS is a “catchment for a multitude of challenges, issues, support, and services. In a small rural community, FFCS becomes the place to ask questions.

“We are prevention, we are not crisis-based.”

The pair say that just like a food bank provides basic needs, FFCS provides system navigation. “We have 3.5 employees, and we do a lot for a lot of people. We try to advocate for them.”

Jenkinson and McLennan agree that the success of FFCS and FIRST in the Flagstaff region is partly because the organizations aren’t simply defined by their provincial mandate. “We’ve become what the community has asked for, and what the community needs.

FFCS has evolved and changed through meeting the needs of the community,” McLennan says.

McLennan was a counsellor at FFCS when she worked in Flagstaff, then moved on to work with the Battle River School Division in the Family School Liaison Program for the past 15 years. She says she went from being at a different school every day of the week to having just two schools, Bashaw and New Norway, under her purview.

With over two decades of experience in social work, she’s dedicated her career to supporting individuals and families from diverse backgrounds.

That includes disability services, community child care, counselling, and most recently, coordinating mental health programs in schools.

“I’ve always been drawn to rural social work, where people help one another. The schools I worked with were very close and supportive communities.”

She says, “I’m looking forward to working in a community driven environment, over a system, that’s more responsive to needs as they arise. I can also follow my own passions, through bringing in speakers and presentations with new programs and partnerships.”

McLennan’s extensive background working with families within the school system and volunteering in the community underscores her commitment to fostering positive change and strengthening community ties.

“But FFCS is always changing to meet the needs of the community, and I expect that to continue. I’m elated to combine forces with the community to continue the strong legacy of FFCS.” Jenkinson added to McLennan’s statement, saying “Systems kill dreams.”

McLennan says, “I’ve always thought of what happens at FFCS as ‘collective effervescence,’ where something or someone can be affected in a positive manner by FFCS.” Jenkinson recalls a quote from a previous board member, who said, “Flagstaff is an excellent community in which to work and to share. Our community supports each other and looks out for each other in a kind way when needed. While many communities can see division, we are experiencing the blossoming of action that represents wellness on the ground.” She has full confidence for McLennan to carry the organization into the future.

To kick off the new season of the DaysArts Concert Series, Blue Moon Marquee graced the Palace Theatre stage in Daysland on Tuesday, October 29, and performed for an energetic crowd.

“We were just in Fort Saskatchewan at the latest issue of Alberta Showcase, and it was excellent,” the evening’s emcee Ken Eshpeter said.

“So, we're in the process of finding all kinds of acts that will just bring nothing but pleasure to your ears next year. We have a fabulous lineup of entertainers for your enjoyment.”

From Rocky Mountain House and Carbon, Alberta, A.W. Cardinal and Jasmine Collette have been writing and performing songs together for many years, with Cardinal on the guitar and vocals, and Collette playing the upright bass, drums, and singing too.

Their 2022 album, Scream, Holler & Howl, won the Juno Award for the Blues Album of the year in 2024.

Their music has been described as carving a path through blues, jazz, jump jive, swing, folk, country, and Indigenous soul, and that their sound defies category.

Joined by saxophonist Jerry Cook and pianist Chris

Andrew, Blue Moon Marquee delighted the crowd with primarily original works and a few covers.

“Al (Cardinal) and I played as a duo for many, many years,” said Collette. “We lived out of the back of our vehicle. We drove all over the country. We played every little hole in the wall, juke joints, biker bar, prisons, mental hospitals, weird castles in Europe, we just

played everywhere and anywhere.

“But when you're a duo, you can get bored, and when you are bored and broke, you start inventing things. You get real creative, so that's just how this came about,” she said.

Debate in Legislature over clarity on province’s policing plans George Lee Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

Albertans —“especially rural Albertans” — deserve clarity about the province’s policing plans after contradictory UCP statements, the NDP’s public safety and emergency services critic told the legislative assembly Oct. 28.

David Shepherd said his ministerial counterpart and the premier are muddying up an issue that could have major funding implications and doesn’t reflect what the UCP campaigned on during the last election.

Premier Danielle Smith has said Alberta municipalities will be able to choose between Alberta sheriffs and the RCMP, Shepherd said. Yet Minister Mike Ellis has said the existing sheriffs, buttressed by new legislation, “will not replace, undermine or destabilize the RCMP,” he added.

“Can (the minister) clarify who got it wrong?”

Ellis responded that the NDP’s position is clouded by an urban bias that doesn’t understand the crime and policing challenges rural Albertans face.

He said that “this is how out of touch the members opposite are here with their urban privilege when it comes to safety within rural Alberta. We have said time and time again that the new independent police agency will augment and support the RCMP.” In the spring portion of the current session, the legislature passed the Public Safety Statutes Amendment

Act, 2024. The legislation enables the government to create a new independent agency. The agency would place the police-like functions of the Alberta Sheriffs under the same kind of legislative framework and civilian oversight that exists for other police services, the province’s website says.

Shepherd, the member for Edmonton-City Centre, said it doesn’t appear that the government can afford to create a new agency, given a shortage of spending on health care, education, workers, housing and more.

“How much is all of this going to cost? Where is the money going to come from? Does (Ellis) intend to defund the RCMP, or is the premier’s mouth writing cheques his department can’t cash?”

Responded Ellis, the member for Calgary-West: “I know it’s tough for the NDP to go outside of the bubble of Edmonton, but if you looked at the sheriff automobiles, they are police cars. If you see their uniforms, those are police uniforms. If you see the utility belts that they have, those are use-of-force weapons.

“We have the infrastructure in place. It really is a matter of designation . . .Despite what the NDP wants, we are going to continue to support rural Albertans because they have rights as well.”

The Court and Prisoner Service was renamed Alberta Sheriffs in the early 2000s, later expanding into the forerunner of today’s Sheriff Highway Patrol.

Alberta Sheriffs are responsible for courthouse security and prisoner transport, traffic and commercial ve-

hicle enforcement on provincial highways, and conservation law enforcement for Fish and Wildlife Services.

They provide personal protection for senior provincial government officials, along with security at the legislature and other provincial facilities.

Rural Albertans benefit through surveillance of criminal targets provided by the Sheriff Investigative Support Unit. SISU supports police agencies across Alberta, with a primary mandate to work with the RCMP. Surveillance got an extra boost in July when the province announced the creation of two eight-member teams, one for the north and the other for the south.

Geared at preventing criminals from targeting farms and rural businesses, the teams activate at the request of local police.

Also under the sheriff umbrella is a unit called Safer Communities and Neighbourhood. SCAN uses legal sanctions and court orders to hold owners responsible for illegal activities on their properties. And the Fugitive Apprehension Sheriffs Support Team, or FASST, helps other police services find and arrest wanted criminals.

About 1,160 positions make up the Alberta Sheriffs, and about 1,000 of those are peace officers, said a statement over the summer break from Ellis’s ministry.

The RCMP needs the support, Ellis said, because “on any given day” Alberta is 17 to 20 per cent short it’s authorized complement.

Albertans beyond the bright lights have “a right to feel safe in this province,” Ellis said.

Flagstaff Food Bank has busy October with high demand Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Flagstaff Food Bank had a busy October, with the second-highest number of hampers handed out this year, at 74. That’s 128 adults and 65 children, served, with seven new clients this month.

At 705 hampers handed out with a month to go in their year, Flagstaff Food Bank is on track to beat last year’s total of 715 hampers, and is already well above 2021-22s figures of 564 hampers.

On the plus side, October was the reverse advent calendar month. This campaign collected 6,385 pounds of food, which beat their 2023 total of 5,679

pounds and 2022 total of 4,476 pounds.

“We at the Flagstaff Food Bank are humbled by your generosity. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for helping to feed Flagstaff.”

The Rural Roots 4-H club members volunteered at the Food Bank on Friday to help put all that food away.

The month also started well, with a donation from the Missoula Children’s Theatre presentation in Hardisty on October 17, which saw Hardisty K-Club member Karen Abel present the food bank with 60 pounds of food and $890 collected from their theatre fundraiser. The K-Club also donated an additional $1,000 to Flagstaff Christmas Sharing.

OBITUARIES Grant Frederick Boddy

Grant Boddy has passed away on November 2, 2024 at the age of 52 years. It goes without saying that he has left us much too soon and will be missed by many.

Grant had his family near his side in Camrose and many of his friends from Forestburg were also with him during his final weeks and helped to keep him smiling, especially Carol

Rawson, Joe Hartung, Roe McClure, and Cheryl Fotheringham. He never gave-up his positive outlook during his hard-fought battle with cancer.

Grant will be dearly missed by his wife Caroline and his children Maven and Isaac.

Grant’s mother Sandra passed away in 2021. He is survived by his father Frederick and his brothers Allan (Rhonda) and Keith (Tara) as well as several nieces and nephews.

Grant Frederick Boddy was was born on January 26, 1972 in Moncton, New Brunswick and grew up in the Maritimes. He studied Applied Science at Mount Allison University and went on to earn a degree in Mining Engineering at the Technical University of Nova Scotia. Mining took Grant to Leaf Rapids, Forestburg and

then to Fort McMurray. His passion for problem solving technical issues, especially for anything to do with data was second to none.

To say that Grant had a fondness for Star Trek, or that he enjoyed anything science and space-tech related would be understatements. He was the go-to-guy for friends and family when it came to diagnosing and fixing technical issues with their home computers.

Yes Grant loved his gadgets, but he also enjoyed playing pool with his friends and downhill skiing with his family.

Over the years, Grant was also active in the community through the Forestburg volunteer fire department, drama club, 4-H as well as serving on the Board of the Valley Ski Hill.

A wake will be hosted from 5:009:00 p.m., Thursday, November 7, 2024 at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel in Camrose for an opportunity to tell stories and share.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 8, 2024 at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel in Camrose with Rev. Helen Reed officiating.

Following the service and lunch, burial will take place at the Fairview Cemetery near the Hasting Coulee Hall Range Road 162 south of Heisler, AB. Cremation has taken place.

Memorial donations may be made to the Valley Ski Hill, or to the Forestburg Historical Society.

Carol Ann Hume

Carol was born March 16, 1961 in Medicine Hat, AB to Glen and Janet Gustavson and passed away November 1, 2024 in Killam, AB. Carol is survived by her husband of 42 years Bryce; her daughters Heather (Derek) Homme and Deanna (Ronnie) Doman; her grandchildren Jacob, Addison, Tyler, and Reed Doman, Kasie Homme (Steve).

Carol was raised in Medicine Hat,

where she met her husband. They welcomed both of their daughters in Medicine Hat, before moving to Wembley, AB in 1990.

During her time in Wembley she made many life long friends. Carol worked as an administrative assistant at the Grande Prairie Regional College in continuing education, a job she thoroughly loved and spoke highly of.

Carol spent 22 years with her family in Red Deer, before moving to Vernon, BC in 2018. She loved being out at the lake with all of her friends and family.

Her and Bryce also spent 12 years traveling to Yuma, AZ in the winter, to avoid the cold and spend time with great friends.

In 2021 Carol and Bryce moved to Sedgewick, AB where they made many great friends through stick curl-

ing and bowling.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents; stepdad Steve Grona; brothers Danny, Mark, and Garth Gustavson; nephew Tyler Gustavson.
