Daysland School Grade 9 students, along with Daysland Legion Branch members, visited Daysland Cemetery this past Monday, Nov. 6, where for the second year running they took part in the No Stone Left Alone ceremony, where students placed a poppy on the gravestones of every veteran buried in Daysland Cemetery. Remembrance Day ceremonies taking place throughout Flagstaff County Leslie Cholowsky Editor

There are Remembrance Day ceremonies taking place throughout Flagstaff County this week.

In Alliance, there is a ceremony at the Community Centre on Saturday, Nov. 11, please be seated by 10:30 a.m.

All are welcome, and a potluck lunch follows the ceremony.

In Galahad, Rev. Stephen Haughland will conduct a Cenotaph Service on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. (outdoors) All are welcome to attend.

In Daysland, the Royal Canadian Legion will be holding a ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 10:30 a.m. at the Daysland Community Hall, with free lunch and entertainment. All are welcome to attend.

At the Daysland School, a ceremony will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m. All are welcome to attend.

In Lougheed, the C.J. Kinross VC Branch will hold a Remembrance Day ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 10:45 a.m.

All are welcome to attend.

In Hardisty, The Royal Canadian Legion will be holding a ceremony at the Hardisty Elks Hall on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 10:30, with a pot luck lunch to follow the service. As well, donations will be accepted for the Flagstaff Food Bank that day.

In Killam, The Royal Canadian Legion will be holding their outdoor ceremony at the Cenotaph, starting at 10:45, followed by an indoor service at The Living Room on Saturday, Nov. 11.

At Killam Public School, there will be a ceremony held on Friday, Nov. 10, starting at 10:30 a.m. and the public are welcome to attend.

In Sedgewick, there will be a march to the cenotaph on Saturday, Nov. 11,

starting at 10:45 a.m. All are welcome to take part.

In Forestburg, the Forestburg School is holding their service on Friday, Nov. 10, starting at 10:30 a.m. and the public is welcome to take part.

The Battle River Pipes and Drums will be sending one of their pipers to each of the Nov. 11 ceremonies taking place throughout the region and to Irma this year to take part in the official ceremonies.

Temporary closure of Hardisty Emergency Dept.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) announced on Friday, Nov. 3, that there will be an upcoming temporary closure of the Emergency Department at the Hardisty Health Centre from Monday, Nov. 6, to Friday, Nov. 10, due to a gap in physician coverage.

Usual Emergency Department services will resume at 7 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 13.

AHS says, “This temporary closure is a last resort

after all efforts to secure locum coverage from a physician or Nurse Practitioner have been exhausted.”

During this period, Nursing staff will remain in the ED during the closure to assess any patients who present to the emergency department. They will provide first aid where needed and refer patients to alternate care facilities in surrounding communities, including the Killam Health Centre, Wainwright Health Centre, or Daysland Health Centre.

EMS will be available to transport patients to other facilities depending on their condition.

All other services at the Hardisty Health Centre will

continue to operate as normal throughout the temporary Emergency Department closure, AHS says.

“We are thankful for the support of surrounding healthcare centres and medical staff and would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding during this time,” AHS says.

Patients are asked to call 911 if they have a medical emergency. Residents are reminded to call Health Link at 811, which is available 24/7 for non-emergency health-related questions. Individuals requiring nonemergency medical care are also encouraged to call their family physician.

Sedgewick Sabres on a two-game streak to start the season Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Sedgewick Sabres hosted the Hughenden Jets on Saturday, Nov. 4, in a rematch to their opening game the previous weekend.

The Sabres got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Chase Schatschneider, assisted by Clay Lang, to take an early lead in the first period.

Their lead widened in the second period, with a goal from Lang, assisted by Schatschneider, making it 2-0 Sabres early in the period.

Kyle Sanders scored Sedgewick’s third point, from Landon Kelndorfer and Landon Eskra, to make it 3-0, then

Keaton Holinaty scored, unassisted, during a power play to put the Sabres up 4-0 heading into the final period.

Hughenden got on the scoreboard for the first time in the third, with an unassisted goal from Braden Crone to make it 4-1.

Nick Laporte then scored on a power play, from Crone and Brady Johnson, to make it 4-2.

Lang solidified the win for the Sabres, scoring his second of the night, and Sedgewick’s fifth point, from Sanders and Dalton Zemanek, to make it a 5-2 final for the Sabres.

Travis Child got the win in goal for the Sabres, with 26 saves on 28 shots, while Wyatt Johnson took the loss in net

for the Jets, making 30 saves on 35 shots.

On Friday, the Flyers travelled to Delburne to face the Outlaws, coming away with a 6-1 loss.

The Outlaws scored two points in the first period, with the Flyers Ben Roth scoring a single, from Bradley Russnak and Brian Roth, to make it 2-1 heading into the second.

Delburne scored a single in the second, to make it a 4-0 game heading into the final period, where the Outlaws managed three more points for the win.

Brendan Davis took the loss in goal for the Flyers, saving 23 of 29 shots, with Delburne’s net minder facing 31 shots from the Flyers.

With two early wins under their belts, the Sabres are in a three-way tie for first place, with Stettler and Delburne also sitting at four points.

Irma Aces are sitting in fourth, with Provost and Oyen tied for fifth, and Coronation, Hughenden, and Forestburg still waiting for their first wins of the season.

This weekend the Flyers will host the Stettler Imperials at home on Friday, Nov. 10, with an 8 p.m. game time, while the Sabres will travel to Oyen to take on the Eagles.

The Jets will host Oyen at home in Hughenden on Saturday night, with an 8 p.m. game time.

CP Holiday Train returning to Hardisty this December Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The CPKC Holiday Train schedule for 2023 was released last week and this year the train will once again make a stop in Hardisty.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Holiday Train tours in Canada and the United States.

The train tours will start Nov. 20 and run through to Dec. 19, raising money, food, and awareness for the important work that food banks do in their communities.

During this year’s stop

in Hardisty, musical guests Tyler Shaw and Keisza will be performing live after the train arrives.

The community has a lot of events planned to make a full evening of fun, including a Christmas market, Santa photos, late night shopping, and will be collecting items for the Flagstaff Food Bank with a ‘Stuff

the Bus’ event that evening, along with many others, to make the evening a family fun event.

Plan to dress warmly, as there is no vehicle parking railside.

The holiday train last visited Hardisty back in

2019. Hardisty has traditionally been one of the lucky communities to have the train visit at night, when the spectacular decor can be seen in

all its glory.

The train will travel to Camrose the next day, with a 1:05 scheduled appearance in that community.

The lasting legacy of Canadian War Amputee veterans

Amid the wars, countless Canadian soldiers and nurses displayed extraordinary bravery and unwavering dedication, putting their lives on the line for our country.

Many of these individuals returned home bearing the profound physical and emotional scars of war, having lost limbs in the line of duty.

Their experiences as amputees not only shaped their own lives but, as members of The War Amps of Canada, they left a lasting legacy on generations of amputees to come.

During the First World War, Madeleine Jaffray (1889-1972), served as a nurse in a hospital near Bordeaux, France. The hospital was bombarded by German aviators, and she was wounded in the foot by a piece of shrapnel from one of the bombs. Her injury led to an amputation, making her Canada’s only female war amputee of the First World War. Mike Krulicki (1925-2020), was just a teenager when he volunteered for service in the Second World War. He enlisted with the Irish Regiment of Canada, and in 1944, while fighting in the Italian Campaign, he stepped on a landmine and lost his right leg below the knee.

Arthur Johnson (1929-2006) served with the Canadian Army Special Force as a mortar man with the Royal Canadian Regiment in the fight for the freedom of South Korea.

In August 1952, in the midst of intense enemy shelling, a mortar landed close by, wounding him and resulting in the loss of his right leg and damage to his right arm.

These honorable individuals contributed their time to various activities of The War Amps and shared their experiences as amputees with others, including modern-day veterans and children. On Remembrance Day especially, but also throughout the year, the Association pays tribute to the sacrifice and service of all those who served and continue to serve.

Hon. Damien Kurek, Battle River-Crowfoot MP Remembering and honouring As a Canadian, I frequently think about the sacrifices so many made for our country so we can enjoy the freedoms we have today. Freedom of expression, religious freedom, democracy, and the ability to disagree are a few of the many rights we enjoy because Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members stood up to tyranny and evil.

This year, as our Canadian allies face war on not only one continent, but two, I am reminded once again of the gravity of the sacrifices made by the men and women of the CAF. As we witness the challenges our world faces, the sacrifice and work our men and women in uniform should weigh heavy on us. And we must not forget the sacrifices it took to build our nation, and how we must work to remain free.

It reminds me of a quote often attributed to Winston Churchill. “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” A history which is woven into every part of our nation.

Earlier this spring, my family and I were travelling across Battle River-Crowfoot when we came upon the site of a church that had long since been demolished, and all that was left was a historical cairn and cemetery. As we stopped for a few minutes to look at this local history, some things stood out. One was a couple of military grave markers, those simple white marble headstones, which mark the final resting place of veterans. Whether in the military cemeteries which lay adjacent to famous battlefields, or a few stones standing in a cemetery only accessible by a dirt road, hidden behind a few trees on the otherwise bald prairie; the history and stories of sacrifice ring throughout our nation, and we cannot forget them.

There are practical things we can do… teach our kids about Remembrance (which I attempted to do in that little cemetery in rural Alberta), promote ways to help veterans and Remembrance causes, and of course, respecting the men and women who wear the uniform today. This includes ensuring they have what they need in the course of their duties, along with the supports to cope with their seen and unseen injuries, or when they leave the CAF at the end of their career.

But beyond the practical, our nation needs to always be one of honour. We must never forget and always remember. And as we approach Remembrance Day and Veterans Week, let’s show that by honouring those heroes who have served, and those who are serving.

I am proud to represent a riding rich in this history, from the small-town soldiers who went to flight wars over seas, to the members of the military stationed at Camp Wainwright today.

Together, let’s Remember.

Letter to the Editor: Why all the poppies?

Dear Editor; Recently, while I was working at the store, a young person came to the till and asked me why some stores had poppies for sale. I replied that it was an important reminder of Remembrance Day. I was prepared to engage in the conversation that I anticipated would follow, however they simply shrugged slightly then walked away. This started me thinking during the ensuing days about our awareness of Remembrance Day and the implications for our society of the complacency that has slipped

into place.

In Europe in the 1930s there was a shift occurring in the cultural mores.

Conservative ideologies were being promoted, feeding on public concerns regarding the economy. The increased movement of people throughout the continent was touted as a cause of the disheartening economic woes. Bigotry and racism were increasingly prevalent, most notably antisemitism, long based in part on the fallacy that Jewish people were intent on controlling the world’s finances, a lightning rod for people to

focus their ire upon. The bigotry sought out more targets for the irrational fears being stoked by many in positions of power and influence. Those targets were any persons not meeting society’s ideological expectations including the vulnerable, gender diverse, gay, physically disabled, cognitively/developmentally disabled, non-white, non-christian and too many more.

This was Europe’s fertile soil for the burgeoning fascist movement, which quickly became a political juggernaut.

nation.

Humanity could not stand by, so a world war to quell the extremes of fascism became a reality... a reality we remember every year. We remember our humanity. We remember that fear is the enemy of humanity.

When I see that young person again, I would like to complete my answer: The poppies are there to remind us of the importance of expressing our humanity.

FRANCHISE FEE INCREASE NOTICE Please be advised that the Town of Daysland is proposing to increase the local access fee, which is charged to FortisAlberta Inc. (FortisAlberta) for use of municipal lands for its power lines effective January 1, 2024.

As is tradition, The Royal Canadian Legion kicked off its 2023 Poppy Campaign by presenting the first poppy of the season to Her Excellent the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, along with her spouse, His excellency Whit Grant Fraser, CC, in a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

Her Excellency said, “As Governor General and Commander-In-Chief, I’m honoured to host the launch of the National Poppy Campaign.

“Every year, from the end of October until Remembrance Day, our country is full of vibrant red poppies.

“It is a sign of respect.

“It is a signal that we will listen to the stories of veterans, reflect on their service, and carry their stories with us, wherever we go.

“With this poppy, we honour the sacrifice of those who served, of those who are serving today, and of those who never made it home.

“We know that the cost of war is enormous. So many lives over time have been lost to fighting.

Canadians have been killed in two World Wars, the Korean War, Afghanistan, and in countries around the world. It is a terrible thought.

“It is important that all

Canadians, especially young Canadians, learn the stories of our veterans.

When we listen to our history, we learn lessons from the past—we learn about the path that led us to war and conflict. And in learning from history, we can avoid those same steps… we can foster peace.

“It can begin simply, with a poppy pinned proudly over your heart. It can begin by scanning the poppy with your phone and reading the anecdotes presented through the “Poppy Stories” initiative.

“I commend the Royal Canadian Legion for their

innovative efforts to reach more Canadians and to commemorate the lives of our heroes…our veterans.”

Simon also commended those veterans present at the ceremony for their service to the county, saying, “We can do no less than be there for you after you have served our nation, to support you with your physical and mental health, and with your quality of life. That is what the National Poppy Campaign is all about.”

She added, “I’m honoured to receive the first poppy.

“I encourage Canadians, not just today but every day, to remember and to honour and support our veterans.”

Simon herself pinned poppies on the Legion representatives in attendance, as well as those veterans invited to attend the ceremony.

Sedgewick Ladies Afternoon Bowling took down some pins on Monday, Oct. 23. Verna Erickson bowled the high single of 235 and the high triple of 635. Erickson has the high average of 177.

As for the teams, the Bowling Bags scored the high single of 77 and the Rolling Pins bowled the high triple of 146. The Rolling Pins remain in the lead with 12 points.

The bowler of the week is Verna Erickson, with 76 points above average. Erickson bowled four spares in a row.

They also bowled on Halloween. Sharon Wylie bowled the high single of 208 and Verna Erickson bowled the high triple of 524.

The Rolling Pins scored the team high single of 19 and the team high triple of 25. They extended their lead to 17 points.

Community Builders Dinner creates new 100+ Women Who Care in Flagstaff Family fund to give in perpetuity Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF) broke with tradition for this year’s Community Builders Dinner in Flagstaff County, by honouring a group instead of a couple. This year’s honouree was the 100+ Women Who Care in Flagstaff County, who as it starts its fifth year of operations just passed the $200k mark in grants given to the community.

The concept is simple, as explained by steering committee and co-founder Tanya Piche: Put up $400 each year, $100 in each of four quarterly meetings; attend an hour-long meeting to determine who gets the funding, and that’s it. “My $400 is a drop in the bucket, but when added to yours, can make a big difference.” Multiply that by 185 current members, and you get the picture.

It may be simple, but is certainly proving to be effective.

Community Builders Dinners are not merely to honour those individuals, couples, or now, groups who have made an outstanding contribution to their community. These dinners also represent the creation of new funds, which are put aside in perpetuity, so that the group continues to give back to the community forever.

With over 220 tickets sold, and half of each ticket’s cost going to the creation of that new fund, Saturday’s event was well on its way to being a success even before it began.

BRCF Board Treasurer Neil Lunty acted as emcee for the evening, speaking a little about the Foundation before dinner, and introducing Rev. Deanna Cox to say grace.

After dinner the real fun began.

BRCF Chairman Kevin Gurr spoke about the history of the BRCF. Gurr put forward some impressive numbers, advising that the BRCF endowment has grown to $20 Million, “All because of a decision made years about on how to give, building into today’s total.” He

said this year the BRCF allotted $250,000 to be given back to the community in grant funding, and a grand total of $9 Million given since its inception. “Our strength is based on modest gifts received by thoughtful individuals like you, who choose to donate to funds that support causes that are important to you.” He pointed out how that aligns with the 100+ Women Who Care philosophy. BRCF funds earn interest, and that’s what creates the funds available for grants. The principle is never touched, and remains available in perpetuity.

The first item was a video produced

by Josie Storbakken JCE Films which introduced the 100+ Women Who Care in Flagstaff County, following the group’s history and also featured a few of the groups who had received funding, describing the impact of being on the receiving end of one of the 100+ Women’s disbursements.

Then auctioneers Dale Jones and Darrin Holben took the stage to auction 10 items, each representing a community in Flagstaff County, mirrored by the 100+ Women’s membership.

A departure from previous dinners, the auction items weren’t your typical fare, by any means. The first item to be auctioned was a one-of-a-kind hard cover cook book, featuring hand-written family recipes contributed by members of the 100+ Women Who Care in Flagstaff County, along with the history of the group.

The second item was from Sedgewick, where 24 members pledged one year of baked treats, two per month. Tara Tanton, representing the Sedgewick group, said items included buns, caramels, tarts, pies, and more.

This lot started things out with a handmade “lazy daisy” cake, and a unique hand-crafted wooden shelf/ladder.

Other auction items included “A Night In,” from Strome, with a gift basket full of everything needed for a cozy night of cards and snacks, where one could “Snuggle in Strome style.” Then

there was the Hardisty item, Two nights of camping that included kayaking, paddle boats, and guided walks on the trails around the lake.

Lougheed’s members offered “Lougheed Saturday Night at the Trout Pond,” with “food, fun, and music for a party of 12.”

Heisler members put together a night of archery ending with a pizza party at Big Willy’s.

Alliance members put their heads together and created a scavenger hunt, with the first clue auctioned Saturday evening, and 100+ Women member Diane Dammann promising, “Something very special, and emotional, at the end.”

The Killam members offered “A deluxe Gopher Safari for Eight,” which proved to be so popular it was split into two safaris, raising $7,000 at auction.

Forestburg members offered a quilt and table topper, and then a second prize of an hour’s pool rental, complete with hot dogs and pop.

Galahad members ended the auction with their “Old Fashioned Country Christmas Party” for 20, an outdoor skating party that includes hayrides, hot dogs, hot chocolate, and treats, with a last-minute surprise donation of a two-person picnic table crafted by Allen Dietz.

Jones and Holben had a lot of fun auctioning off the unique lots, with Jones in top comedic form, keeping the crowd entertained throughout.

He spoke from the heart, however, when he praised BRCF Ambassadors Emeritus Blain Fowler, and Ken Drever, who has passed. “These two outstanding people,” Jones said, adding that living with generosity and giving is a learned thing, and used Drever as an example of the kind of leadership and teaching that passed through generations.

Jones added, “I commend all who’ve contributed to tonight’s auction, and to the 100+ Women. If we don’t keep supporting our communities, we’ll end up

shopping in Camrose. That you to those who keep putting in the effort to make our great communities what they are.”

The final item for auction was a side of beef, donated by Jones and his wife Nanette, which has been donated to the Flagstaff Food Bank, and already cut, wrapped, and delivered. Members of the audience were offered the opportunity to ‘bid’ on one or more units offered at $100 each.

Formal tributes to the 100+ Women Who Care in Flagstaff County were made by Lynne Jenkinson, representing FIRST (Flagstaff Informed Response Sharing Team) and Chelsea Nielson, representing Killam Public School.

Each described the impact that funds received from the 100+ Women had made, not just on their organizations, but reaching far into the community.

The final presentation of the night came from 100+ Women who Care in Flagstaff County’s steering committee, and co-founders, Holly Bovencamp, Joanne McMahon, and Tanya Piche.

McMahon talked about how the idea came about, via a conversation in Piche’s salon chair, and how the group had formed. She also talked about how the three women, each representing different generations, found that strengthened their ability to work together.

Piche talked about how the group works, and the impact that a group of 185 women can and has had by working together.

Bovencamp talked about the housekeeping, how the voting works, and ended with an African proverb that has become synonymous with 100+ Women Who Care in Flagstaff County. “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.”

Lunty announced at the end of Saturday’s event, held in the Killam Community Hall that initial figures were in, estimating the fund created by the evening’s event to have raised $40,000.

That number was revised later by the 100+ Women group to be closer to $50,000.

There were many positive things going on this week that reflect on our community. We are so fortunate to have such a strong, supportive community that improves all of our lives. If only the rest of the world could have the same.

On Saturday night the Battle River Community

Foundation honoured the 100 Women Who Care at the dinner in Killam. Most of the members were in attendance to receive the applause of the crowd as they marched in behind the Battle River Pipes and Drums.

The mood of the whole evening was uplifting.

We, Karin McCracken and I, just got in the door and were greeted by Isabelle LaVesque at the BRCF Dinner on Saturday in Killam. Isabelle is a guest of Mabel and Mel Thompson for a few days. They had the piano all tuned up for her. She will be coming to Alliance to stay with Teresa and Albert Corbel.

Denny used to own the Commercial Hotel in Alliance and Isabelle wowed many of us with her skill as a pianist.

Karin McCracken and I were seated at a table with Kevin Gurr, Chairman, and his wife Ally, thinking that we were the only ones from Alliance and then at intermission Sid Deibert caught up with us. He and Betty were sitting with Dale Jones, auctioneer, and his wife Nanette. I was asked to introduce the Alliance contribution to the auction.

Tamina Miller had cleverly created a scavenger hunt to take place in Alliance. There is a beautiful, handcrafted doll along with

the first clue. Charlene Chevraux was the winning bidder. She says she is excited to go on the hunt.

Laurie and Dennis Fuller said that they had a great weekend, watched Erika play volleyball in Stettler yesterday, then today watched Cabrie win 4-3 against Sherwood Park in Sherwood Park.

Rev. Tony Snow, Indigenous Minister for the Chinook Winds Region, came all the way from Morley to lead our service on Sunday.

He compared the different approaches to prayers, and rituals within our faith.

The Legion met on Thursday evening, the first Thursday of the month as usual. They agreed to pay for the fireworks for Santa Daze as usual. They planned the November Remembrance service to include the potluck lunch at noon as usual. Also, as

usual, there is a request that the public be seated by 10:30 in the hall. A piper will lead the march in. The Battle River Pipes and Drums are sending a piper to every ceremony in the county for Saturday, Nov 11.

The Women’s Institute meets on Wednesday with Donna Inkin doing the study. I know she will be speaking about the Metis to which we are all looking forward.

Lougheed Legion Wall of Remembrance a tribute to local men and women who served Leslie Cholowsky Editor

When CJ Kinross Legion Branch VP Morris Sigalet first moved to the area, the Lougheed Legion’s walls were decorated with old and historical photos, much different from its appearance today, with rows and rows of individual photos and biographies of local men and women who served in World War I and World War II. Sigalet says his mother passed away in 2001, and shortly afterwards, during a visit to his dad, in Camrose, where he grew up, his father had all the family photo albums and boxes of photos all over the living room.

“Here were these photos, strewn all over the floor.” He says his father wanted something done with them, and Sigalet felt that these were family treasures, and should be shared between he and his siblings.

“I had a scanner, a laptop, and a printer, I knew I could make copies.”

One of the photos was a picture of his mother, Patricia Morgan (her maiden name) as the 1954 Hardisty Rodeo Queen. Sigalet’s mother was raised north of the Wanda School, the family lived in what’s commonly referred to as the “Morgan House.”

He says he took the photos over to Eunice Losness, his wife Denise Losness’s mother, in Lougheed, to have a look.

“Eunice told me to wait a minute, then came out with a nearly identical photo of herself as Rodeo Queen, back when she was Eunice Johnson.”

That conversation led to Losness giving Sigalet Herb Losness’s photos of his time in the service in the RCAF circa 1944.

From there, Sigalet put together a commemoration for Herbert Losness, including one of the photos, the RCAF insignia, and a short biography.

Sigalet says the commemorative biography of Losness made it to a Lougheed Legion meeting, and that’s when the project took on a life of its own.

He says Ernie Cookson, as an example, showed him, “some very cool pictures of his time in the service. I borrowed them, scanned them, and documented them.”

Pretty soon others were coming to Sigalet, with photos and stories of people who were present legion m embers, former legion members, and even people who grew up in the Lougheed area. These went into a photo album collection that the Legion holds.

“Luckily in many cases we had family members who were able to provide the writeups,” he says.

In 2003, Sigalet was encouraged to join the Legion that he had already done so much work for.

Then it was proposed that more of the single page framed displays, like that done with Herb’s photo, be created.

Sigalet says he started to work on them, with help from legion and community members in gathering names and histories. “We sent out letters, using Herb’s portrait as an example. Many sent us back whole stories, and some just sent highlights. That’s where Denise really helped me pull the biographies together. She played a big part in writing the stories.”

“The project really snowballed, as Legion members and veterans contacted other people who they felt should be mentioned.

“By 2005, we had enough framed biographies to fill the wall.”

They did just that, building special rails mounted to the wall to hold the portraits three stacks high, with 63 biographies featured, all with at least some connection with Lougheed.

In 2005 a special unveiling ceremony was held, starting at the Legion and moving to the Community Hall to handle the large influx of people who attended. “We invited the families of all those who had featured biographies to attend.”

At the 2005 unveiling ceremony, the curtain was pulled by Maxwell Kirkman, another veteran from the region.

Since that day, Sigalet has continued to collect the stories of Lougheed area veterans. “I have more stories than I have frames.”

Sigalet says some of the items brought in by families were absolutely amazing. “I had a handwritten diary that was 3” thick, from a local man who was a navigator in WWII on bombers. He recorded everything, who he sent letters to, who he received letters from, and where he was sent. One line recorded “Our third bombing run over Hanover.”

“It was an incredible resource. I photocopied some of the pages, but now I wish I’d copied the entire diary.”

He came across some outlandish stories as well, like that of Raymond Marsden of Liverpool, who answered an ad in an English newspaper for a farm worker. “The ad had been placed by Ned Butcher of Lougheed.” Butcher was himself a veteran of WWI, and the Legion walls bear one of the needlepoints he did, a

hobby he picked up during war time. Butcher was wounded in the Battle of Tresnay, France, in 1917 and after spending six weeks in hospital in France, was invalided back to Canada, where he lived to age 90.

Apparently the young man left his home without revealing his intent to his family, who tried to move heaven and earth to have the ship turned around, to no avail.

Marsden ended up joining the Canadian Air Force during the outbreak of WWII, and his plane was shot down over the Mediterranean Sea. Sigalet has a copy of a news story from England outlining the young man’s adventure coming to Canada, and his family’s reaction.

Sigalet says many of the war veterans who hailed from the Lougheed area came back from the war and went on to do great things, like Charles Henry Weir, who joined the Air force, was sent over to England, but never assigned to a crew.

“He came home from the war, took advantage of the education opportunities offered to veterans, and obtained his Civil Engineering degree, then also obtained his commission as a Dominion Land Surveyor and Alberta Land surveyor. Weir became a founding member of Weir & Co, working closely with industry and government to become a major contributor to civil engineering throughout the Province of Alberta.”

“I even have one American on the wall, Clifford Kelly, who happened to be in Canada and signed up here.”

There are many names and faces featured on the commemorative wall that have ties to the village to this day. “For instance John Stokke, a Norwegian, signed up and served with the Norwegian Air Force, then returned to Lougheed. His brother, Einar Stokke, was the local blacksmith. He signed up with

the Calgary Highlanders, and was taken as a prisoner of war.

“When Einar returned, he started an insurance business, and eventually got Herbert Losness into the insurance business. That business is still active in Lougheed today, now as the Battle River Agencies, part of the James Insurance Group, but most recently as Losness Insurance.”

Sigalet says even with the wall and biographies, he’s heard so many stories from veterans and their families of funny, strange, and oft times tragic circumstances.

For instance he says when Max Kirkman, who unveiled the wall in 205, first signed up for service in WWII, he was issued a WWI uniform initially, as they’d run out.

Or like William Cookson, who served in the 51st Battalion in WWI, where his family has an actual cassette tape with his war memories.

Sigalet even found a personal connection while working through the project, when he found William Wright, and realized that he had gone to school in Camrose with Wright’s grandson.

For some veterans, Sigalet only has photos, with no information other than a name, and no family remaining to help.

“Like William Willox, who died Sept. 3, 1918, and served with the Canadian Infantry, 10th Battalion; or his brother, Private George Willox, who died Sept.

24, 1916, and whose name is on the Vimy Memorial.

He died at Vimy Ridge, and his body was never recovered.

“I don’t have their dates of birth or their stories.”

He says that Donald Sax is another Lougheed-area veteran whose photo he has, but no story. “But his family was recently in Lougheed to inter his ashes, as he passed away during COVID. The family dropped in, and then have promised to write his story and send it to me.”

He says often times veterans would have a photo of themselves with their platoon, but on the back there would be only a rank and surname. It wasn’t unusual to find fellow Lougheed-area veterans in the same photos.

Sigalet says he’s had help in research from local historians, naming Perry Robinson in Sedgewick as one such resource, who taught him how to determine Battalion numbers from service numbers, and more.

World War I records are now searchable online, but that’s not yet the case for WWII records.

One difficulty he has had is that some battalions, like the 51st, were broken up to fill up spots in other battle groups. “Except the 49th Loyal Eddites, their commander refused to be broken up.” He adds, “They went on to become a front-line battalion. In fact, that was where C. J. Kinross was assigned, but then he was put back in the 51st before he was discharged.”

Sadly, one of the ongoing jobs in maintaining the wall has been adding dates of death to those veterans who were still with us when the biographies were first hung.

Herbert Losness’s biography was the first done by Sigalet, which led to an entire wall of Remembrance.

Well hello folks. The early morning fog the last few days must be impacting all the eager hunters who are trying to fill their tags.

We were excited to see the beautiful moose rack that one of our grandsons shot. It is the biggest I have ever seen and very impressive. I would hang it in our rec room in a heartbeat, but I doubt he plans to part with it.

We have had so many hunters stop in at the farm to get permission to hunt. One gentleman even brought us a number of packaged moose meat, as a thank you for allowing him to hunt.

My grandma that lived

in East Germany (now part of Poland, I believe) was quite a hunting lady.

I have interesting pics of her in her hunting gear. I don't believe it was common for women to go out hunting, but her father was a head forest ranger, so I guess it was in her blood.

So far we have only had one hunting babe ask for permission to hunt on our land and she is local... pretty cool, eh?

On Saturday I had the pleasure to attend Tamina Miller's Meditation retreat in Alliance. We were also privy to meet and enjoy a question and answer session with Grant L., a wonderful Psychotherapist from Edmonton. It was such a relaxed Q and A session and the ladies had an interesting array of questions for Grant to address. No one was shy

or too embarrassed to question him and ask for help. We all gleaned important day to day coping skills for a variety of issues. This man was rather amazing as he calmly sat there and came up with coping strategies to a variety of people's problems. It was a real treat to be able to learn from this talented man. Thank you Grant and Tamina for inviting him out to rural Alberta.

Our meditation session was led by Tamina and her soothing voice puts you in a heavenly trance. As I laid on my mat I could hear the soft snoring noises as ladies sunk deeper and deeper into their meditative states. It takes me a little longer to reach that state, but I made it, too. It makes you feel so relaxed and magical, it is hard to explain, but you

just feel closer to a spiritual world, if that makes any sense? After the session we were fed a delicious lunch and we could all chat and interact. What a fabulous day and all out in small town, rural Alberta.

St. Paul's United Church had their annual Roast Beef Supper. It was as a take-out meal and we sold 200 tickets. We heard nothing but compliments on the quality of the food, especially the delicious meat and the side dishes. We were informed that some folks really hoped for an inhouse supper, so people could socialize. Unfortunately we do not have the manpower to provide such an event. If our churches were filled with active Sunday attenders this might be possible, but at the moment that is not happening. I guess

there is always hope and prayer, isn't there?

Wednesday, Dec. 6, is the evening that the Christmas train is coming to Hardisty. We are all excited and it is the night for our Christmas market. That is also the day that the Christmas bus trip is going to West Edmonton Mall. Check out the informative posters that will soon be up at the post office for more information.

I hear lots of happy people since our Emergency is offering "urgent care" hours. Thank you to all the hardworking staff that updated their skills and to our dedicated Physician. We appreciate all the devotion to your profession and also thank the committees that worked tirelessly to make this all come to fruition. You are all appreciated!

It is sad that our small community has had to endure a rash of significant robberies, in the last month or so. It is so frustrating for the business owners, but it must be so difficult for the RCMP to try to cover such a large area. Our citizens seem to keep their eyes out for any unusual activity and alert the police. It is very interesting to read the police reports in The Community Press. It just goes to show you how busy the police are and why they need the eyes of their citizens to help them stop crimes.

Have a good week folks. This Saturday is Remembrance Day. You are free because of those "that have fallen." Remember the famous poem, "In Flanders field the poppies grow..."

Tough weekend for the Wheat Kings with two losses Editor

It was a tough weekend for the Killam Wheat Kings, starting with a loss at home against the Lloydminster Bandits, on Friday, Nov. 3, at home, then continuing Saturday with a loss against the Cold Lake Ice. Friday night’s match against the Bandits was a high scoring affair, with six goals in the first period alone.

Lloyd got on the scoreboard first, scoring a goal in the first 28 seconds of the period.

The Wheat Kings tied things up with a goal from Rhett Bergseth, assisted by Kyler Bergseth, to make it 1-1.

The Bandits then scored another two, to take a twopoint lead.

Kobe Charchun brought it back within one with a goal from Tyler Krys and Jordan Gagnon, then Kale Hurlburt scored the tying goal, from Gagnon and Mark Hanson-Torwalt to make it 3-3 going into the second period.

This time the Wheat Kings pulled ahead, with two goals in a row from Kobe Charchun for a hat trick, the first from Hanson-Torwalt and Gagnon, and the second from Gagnon and Hurlburt.

The Bandits stole the next three points to pull ahead by one heading into the final period with a score of 6-5.

Lloydminster widened the lead with an early goal in the third, before the Wheat Kings scored their sixth goal, by Brady Parchoma, from Chase Rombough and Aidan Borgel, to come back within one.

Three straight goals from the Bandits solidified their win, with a 10-6 final.

Kailum Grove took the loss for the Wheat Kings in net, saving 41 of 51 shots, while the Bandits goalie saved 34 of 40 shots from Killam.

Wheat Kings Head Coach Bob Charchun says, “We got in a bit of track meet with Lloyd which was not the approach we wanted to take. We left Grover out to dry too many times with d-zone breakdowns and giving up far too many outnumbered rushes. Kailum has limited experience at this level and we just didn’t support him enough as a team. He had over 50 shots; we needed to limit that number for him and we didn’t.” He says goalie Ty Marcinkowski is out of the lineup dealing with a minor injury that needs rest and time.

The team headed to Cold Lake on Saturday night to face the Ice, which

resulted in another tough loss for Killam.

The Ice managed four goals in the first period to take an early lead of 4-0.

The Wheat Kings rallied in the second period, with Adam Child scoring their first point, from Aidan Borgel and Mark HansonTorwalt.

The Ice scored a fifth goal in the second for a 5-1 lead heading into the final period.

The Ice solidified their lead with two more points in the third to make it 7-1, before Killam’s Rhett Bergseth scored once, from Brady Parchoma, to make it 7-2, then scored again, this time from Jeremy Burr, for a 7-3 final.

Ty Djos and Kailum Grove split goaltending duties for the Wheat Kings this weekend, with Djos starting, and Grove playing 40 minutes in the last two periods.

Charchun says, “In the back-to-back with Cold Lake, we started Ty Djos (AP) and we didn’t support him well either.

“We spotted them a fourgoal lead after the first and just couldn’t find our way back into the game. Grover settled us down when he came in and we were able to tie the next two periods but our poor start cost us a game we needed to win.”

first wins of the season.

The Wheat Kings only have one game this coming weekend, where they will head up to Vegreville to take on the Rangers on Sunday, Nov. 12, The Wheat Kings are then back at home with back-to-back home games, hosting the Vermilion Tigers on Friday, Nov. 17 then the Onion Lake Border Chiefs on Saturday, Nov. 18.

Bobby Irene Freadrich

With heavy hearts, we bid a fond farewell to a remarkable soul, Bobby Irene Freadrich, whose life was a testament to love, resilience, and a deep connection to the land she cherished.

Born to Leslie and Dorothy Tennis on November 15, 1950, Bobby embarked on a journey that would touch the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on her community and family.

Bobby's story began in the heart of Detroit, Michigan, where she spent the first 12 years of

her life. Yet, fate had other plans, and her path soon led her to rural Hardisty, Alberta.

Here, Bobby found herself living with her dad and her beloved Grandma Tennis on a modest farm, a world away from Detroit. It was here that she would come of age and eventually earn her high school diploma, a testament to her resilience and determination.

She joined the ranks of the workforce, finding employment at the bank in Killam. It was on a bright April day in 1971 that she embarked on the next chapter of her life when she exchanged vows with Gerald Freadrich in Vegas. Together, they began a lifelong adventure filled with love, devotion, and the bonds of family.

In 1977, Gerald and Bobby made their home

on the Jack and Blanche Gair farm, south of Killam. Here, they put down their roots, raising their beloved children, Karen Lee, and Kevin Gerald.

Bobby was not only a proud landowner, but a dedicated homemaker, tending to her garden, yard, and home with unwavering dedication.

Bobby was more than just the heart of her home; she was the backbone of her family's farm, actively participating in every aspect of agriculture, from seeding to swathing and combining.

Her commitment to her work and her land was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Beyond her role as a loving mother and devoted farmer, Bobby was a pillar of her community.

She played an instrumental role in the construction of the Killam Community Hall during

the early 1990s, demonstrating her unwavering dedication to the betterment of her town. As a proud member of the Killam Agriculture Society and the Killam Recreation Board, she played a crucial part in organizing countless successful rodeos, infusing joy and excitement into the lives of many.

In her leisure time, Bobby cherished her moments of camaraderie with friends, always ready for a spirited game of cards. Her smile and welcoming nature made her a friend to all.

In 2001, due to health challenges, Bobby and Gerald decided to leave the family farm, a bittersweet moment that marked the end of an era.

She continued to stay involved in the family farm and looked forward to any and all updates.

Brian Chester Simpson

October 2, 1948 – October 30, 2023 Brian Chester Simpson of Edmonton, Alberta, passed away on October 30, 2023, at the age of 75.

Brian was born at Killam, AB.

Brian completed his schooling in Sedgewick, AB. After graduating he moved to Edmonton.

Brian is survived by his brothers and sister: Bernie (Jo) of Brooks, his children Chris (Sandra), Shanna Lee (Jeff) and Murray (Linda). Rod (Cheryl) of Red Deer, his children Chad (Larah) and Taylor. Anita (Gerald) of Whitecourt, her children Steve (Lani) and Dan (Carmen).

He is also survived by nieces, nephews, great nieces

and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.

He was predeceased by his parents Gordon and Peggy.

On the ladies’ side: Marlene Beulow bowled the high single of 213 and Verna Erickson bowled the high triple of 604. Erickson has the high average of 174.

On the men’s side: Garry Klein scored the high single of 255 and bowled the high triple of 707. Klein’s high average sits at 227.

The team high single of 127 points above average was scored by Team Klein and the high triple of 295 points above average was scored by Team Erickson.

Team Klein is in first with 14 points.

The bowlers of the week were Sheila Tanton, with 55 points above average, and

Larry Burden, with 76 points above average.

The YBC skipped bowling on the week of Halloween to get some trick and treats from the local ghouls and goblins.

FAITH COLUMN

He never sleeps As I mentioned last week, Psalm 121 is my favorite Psalm. One of the reasons it holds this distinction is because it forces us to answer the question: “Where does our help come from?”

To this question, the Psalmist answer is, as is my own, is that true help comes from God. One of the reasons it does, as I noted last week, is because He is the one who made the heavens and the earth.

Besides this reason, in

verses three and four of this Psalm, the Psalmist offers up another reason, saying that God never needs to sleep.

He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

Since God does not need to sleep, He then will make sure our foot is not moved, just as He will surely keep us.

Keep us steady, hope-

ful, and joyful no matter what.

Things we would never enjoy if God needed to sleep, since He sometimes wouldn’t be available when we needed Him. Thankfully He never sleeps, therefore He is always available and able to help us.

May we therefore call out to Him for the help He can provide us.

Daysland Grade 9 students and Legion members pay respects to veterans at Daysland Cemetery Leslie Cholowsky Daysland School’s Grade 9 class, along with members of the Daysland Legion, held a ceremony at the Daysland Cemetery on Monday, Nov. 6, participating for the second year running in the No Stone Left Alone campaign.

Students gathered for a short ceremony that included a few readings by students, and prayer by Legion Cha;pain Rob Johnson. The ceremony was led by Daysland Legion Branch President Dan Lemire.

After the brief ceremony, students gathered up poppies and scattered to all areas of the cemetery, to lay poppies on 67 graves of veterans.

The graves had been pre-marked by Canadian flags to make it easy for students to identify veteran’s graves.

Lemire asked students to take a moment and reflect on each person’s service as they placed a poppy on the marked gravesite.

No Stone Left Alone is a ceremony sponsored by a foundation by the same name, which is dedicated to honouring

and remembering Canada’s veterans.

“Our unique ceremony provides students and youth with an authentic experience that creates knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of those who serve and of the sacrifice of Canada’s fallen.”

The Foundation’s vision is: “Our youth, honouring Canada’s veterans through personal acts of remembrance, gratitude, and citizenship, every year, forever.”

This year marks the 14th year of No Stone Left Alone in Canada. It was created by Maureen Bianchini Purvis, who saw a lack of connection with youth in terms of connecting with service and sacrifice of our military. This sparked an idea to see if she could get youth to engage and honour more veterans across the country.

The Foundation works all across Canada, starting in Edmonton in 2011 with one ceremony. In 2022, 9,778 students from 168 communities honoured 78,896 veterans across the country.

The Foundation’s goal is to have every one of Canada’s 460,000 veterans honoured each year.

Thanks to Daysland School’s Grade 9 students, every veteran’s gravesite in the cemetery received a poppy on Monday, Nov. 6.

Students visited Daysland Cemetery’s veteran graves (marked by flags) in pairs to place poppies on each.

During a short ceremony at the cemetery, Daysland students read “On Flanders Field” and “For the Fallen,” with Chaplain Rob Johnson leading a prayer, and Legion President Dan Lemire initiating a moment of silence to honour the fallen.

Battle River U13 Female Knights (2-1-1) won a 3-2 road game at Lloydminster on Sunday. Lloyd had two leads in the game, but BR tied the game twice and then scored the lone third period goal to secure the win. Lily Millington scored twice including the winner, while Abbigail Mulloy also connected. Quinn Fossen and Jayden Bird added assists. Taylah Zentner made 30 stops in goal for a .938 save percentage game.

Battle River U15 Female Knights (3-0-0) beat Fort McMurray 5-2 on Sunday at the Wild Rose

Co-op Recreation Centre.

BR fought back twice as Fort had two leads in the game. Three BR goals in the final frame secured the victory. Emma Galletly got a hat trick for BR, and Bria Sayer scored twice. Berkley Muirhead picked up an assist. Maddison Eckstrand got the win in goal.

Battle River U18 Female Knights (2-0-0) won a 4-1 road game at Lloydminster on Sunday. Mercedeze Wildeman scored twice (2g 1a) and Paige Zimmer got three assists.

Other scorers were; Erika Zimmer (1g 1a), and Caylin Brumwell. Abbygail Krys got the win in goal.

Hughenden U11 Jets (34-0) won a 16-5 road game at Elk Point on Saturday led by Reuben Congdon’s eight point game (6g 2a). Gauge Hunter and Laine Ference both added hat tricks. Other scorers were; Ryan Carson (2g 1a), Ryder Piller (1g 2a), Kahle Peacock (2a), Jax Piller (1g), Bo Anhorn (1a), Wyatt Cameron (1a), and Noah Nguyen (1a).

Emerson Holte got the win in goal.

Battle River U11 (7-1-0) won a 7-2 road game in Consort on Sunday with Braden Swainson scoring six times and assisting on the other goal. Brady Wesley got the other goal and picked up an assist.

Hudson Cox got the win in goal. The previous day, BR won a 9-2 game against Endmoor at Sedgewick.

Braden Swainson scored four in a five point game. Other scorers were; Bentley Clark (2g), Dane Foster (2a), Brady Wesley (1g), Kale Dickson (1g), Kaelin Miller (1g), Braiden Kueber (1a), Grady Bergseth (1a), and Nixen Daigle (1a). Hudson Cox made 25 saves for a .926 save percentage game.

Thunderstars U11 (4-30) dropped a 13-2 game against Camrose on Sunday at Forestburg. Landon Miller and Bennett Johnstone scored for TS, with Jase Bendfeld picking up an assist.

Additional firefighters from Flagstaff helped with provincial fires this summer Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Last week in The Community Press, we had a story from Killam Fire Chief Joe Knievel about

his experiences this past summer in assisting communities in danger from large forest fires.

Knievel was one of many local firefighters

who travelled north to help.

Letter from the Front Lines of WWI as published in The Sedgewick Sentinel (later to become The Community Press) (Warning: the letter contains disturbing descriptions of war) Somewhere in France, August 29th, 1917 Dear Friend Eastly, The battle has been raging now for 15 days and I know that a few of the Lougheed boys are in it, for I have been in it myself for the last eight days, and I often think of the boys for I never get to see them, but I know theyare in it so am writing you before anything happens to me, for it is pure slaughter out there, and our battalion has done it’s bit, for we came out awful short of men, but we are game to the last, so here goes to tell you a few things.

Dear Eastly, the way we are fighting is very difficult, for the enemy knows where all our trenches are, for we have

to chase him out of a trench before we can get cover, for the shell holes are full of water and dead bodies.

We took a position last Saturday that we could not get through a railway arch for dead bodies piled up three deep.

He uses the most dreadful ways to get you.

He got quite a few of our machine gun teams this time. I guess you know Smith the butcher. He went this time and mostly all my gun mates went under too.

We keep taking a few prisoners and what we take you would be surprised to see them -- they are mostly all young boys from 15 to 20 years old.

They have the life scared out of them. We all feel sorry for them when we take them but we have to do our work. We lie on our posts here, and the rats are all over you.

There are millions of them.

success this year, I am your friend, W. Orritt William Orritt died a month later, on September 29, 1918. He was mortally wounded the previous day and died of his injuries. He is buried at Bucqouy Road Cemetery, Ficheaux, Pas de Calais, France.

He came to Canada from Lancashire, England after losing his first wife and two children. Orritt remarried and in 1910 came to Lougheed, where he lived on a farm. William built fences for the CPR. When war broke out, William settled his family in Lougheed and joind the army on July 17, 1916. His youngest child was born while he was in training, and he got home on leave to see her before being shipped overseas.

Orritt is one of the veterans included at the CJ Kinross VC Legion Branch’s Wall of Fame in Lougheed.

Chateh, Alberta, with Reid Rorem, Troy Zieffle, Dane Davis, Colton Waddy, and Natacha StLouis, then that team, minus Rorem, also travelled to Zama City.

They provided structure protection for both communities.

Cannady, Zieffle, Waddy, and St-Louis also travelled to Garden City.

Later in the season, this time as employees of Muirhead’s Safety First, Cannady says he went with fellow firefighters

Rorem, Kevin Boudreau, and Max Nelson, travelling up with industrial fire trucks from Safety First.

It wasn’t Cannady’s first time, as he also went to Cranbook in 2004 when they needed help protecting that community against forest fires.

“The best part of going north this year was the experience each person gained doing things we normally don't get involved in as fire fighters here,” Cannady said.
