100+ Women Who Care group hits $200k mark
Leslie Cholowsky Editor
As they begin their fifth year of operations, the 100+ Women Who Care in Flagstaff County have hit over $200,000 in donations to local organizations, $200,150, in fact. At last week’s meeting, held Tuesday, Oct. 17, in Heisler at the Heisler Community Centre, three nominees made their pitches to the organization members. Among them was Friends of the Battle River Railway, hoping for funding to help build a Heisler passenger gazebo; Hardisty Hospital Auxiliary Guild, hoping for funding to help purchase a new OM Interactive projector; and the Killam Health Care Foundation, looking for funding to help purchase a Centralized Cardiac Monitoring system.
After hearing the presentations, the group voted to fund the Killam Health Care Foundation’s project, and that group received $11,350, with Board Chair Sharon Moser accepting the cheque. “Coincidentally, the Heisler Community Hall was the last funding recipient, from our previous meeting, and they showed off their new projector system and new concrete work,” says Holly Bovencamp, co-founder of the 100+ Women group. Bovencamp says the group presently has 180 members, which far exceeds any expectations she and fellow co-founders Tanya Piche and Joanne McMahon had when they started the group less than five years ago. Members forwarded 21 nominations for funding, with three randomly pulled to present for the evening.
The group’s next meeting will take place in February, this time in Strome. Meetings are held in a different commu-
nity each quarter, as the group is made up of members from all around the Flagstaff County region.

Hardisty Fire and Rescue hosted a special evening of fire safety fun featuring Juno-Award-Winning entertainer Mary Lambert, presenting her “Sing out fire safety” concert, on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Fire Hall as part of their Fire Prevention Week kickoff. Lambert involves members of the audience, also soliciting the help of firefighters for a fun and interactive show that teaches about fire safety and encourages children to go home and teach their families what they’ve learned.
