After six rounds of vote counting, the UCP Party of Alberta declared that Danielle Smith had won the leadership contest, with 53.77 per cent of the votes, taking the victory from Travis Toews, the only remaining candidate. Smith was sworn in to office as Alberta’s 19th Premier during a ceremony held Tuesday, Oct. 11. Alberta Lieutenant Governor Salma Lahkani oversaw the swearing-in, and administered the oath of office to Smith. Smith said, “I am humbled and honoured to become Premier of Alberta. Now the work begins to build one of the greatest places on Earth to live, work and raise a family. “I have said that I will govern with strength and with compassion, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to demonstrate that to Albertans.” Smith must now secure a seat in the legislature; she was the only leadership candidate without a seat, and now has
announced her intention to run in a byelection in Brooks-Medicine Hat. That vacancy came open when MLA Michaela Frey resigned earlier in the month. Smith said, “I would like to thank Michaela Frey for her service representing the constituents of Brooks-Medicine Hat. She was a strong voice in caucus and took the lead on many important issues to stand up for the rights of Albertans and I wish her all the best in the future. “It is important to me that I am able to join the rest of the United Conservative caucus in the Legislature this Fall to begin the work addressing the concerns of Albertans.” She added, “By running in Brooks-Medicine Hat, I will assure them that forgotten corners of the province will not be forgotten and they will continue to have a strong voice at the table.” Brooks-Medicine Hat is also the riding Alberta Party Leader Barry Morishita represents; he will be running against Smith in the upcoming byelection.
