Students honoured with awards Patricia Harcourt Editor Viking School held its annual Achievement Awards on Friday, October 7, to honour students who earned recognition for their work during the previous school year.

Principal Candice McLeod and VicePrincipal Tracy Doerksen greeted those attending, and noted that the gymnasium was unusually full of people turning out to see the ceremony that included the public for the first time in three years.

The awards began with the elementary students: Alex Arndt received the Elementary Award from Trudy Josephison; Grade 7 Tegan White received the Most Improved Award from Duncan MacGillivray, and Emma Lawes received the Citizenship Award from the same presenter; Grade 8 Ryl Wakefield and Ashton Zemlak were given the Most Improved award by presenter Tracy Doerkson, and Macy Morken received the Citizenship award from Tracy Doerksen; Grade 9 - Tanner Quinton received the Most Improved award from Trudy Josephison, and Isabella Rotelletti and Barrett Lang received the Citizenship award from Trudy Josephison.

JOHN’S RANT Now the real work begins for Premier Smith Well, Danielle Smith, you made your most improbable of political comebacks and now the hard part begins.

You will have to keep the UCP together, and weather the barrage of hate, mistruths and criticism from people on all sides of the political spectrum.

Already the NDP leader Rachel Notley has mounted her orange soapbox to slam the new leader of the UCP. Notley spluttered to the assembled media Smith’s government will bring “more chaos, costs, and conflict.”

“Smith has made it plain that the real issues Alberta families are struggling with are of no interest to her,” Notley said. “Instead, she’s preoccupied with a so-called sovereignty act. At best, it’s a fake, another strongly worded letter to Ottawa. At worst, it will destroy jobs, destroy investor confidence and stifle Alberta’s economy at a critical moment.”

The typical line of drivel from the orange socialists.

I look forward to seeing a Smith/Notley debate. I’m sure Smith will easily hold her own against the former Premier, who we really don’t ever want to see lead this province again.

In fact in her acceptance speech last Thursday, Smith pointed out Notley has had velcro lips when it comes to criticizing her Federal brother Jagmeet Singh and his minions in their ill-conceived pact to prop up the Trudeau Liberals, who are intent on destroying Alberta’s energy industry.

She set the right tone about what she repeatedly called “the NotleySingh-Trudeau alliance.”

“There is no excuse for any party leader (Notley) seeking to be Premier of Alberta to sacrifice the welfare of Albertans for the sake of toeing the line of her federal party.

“She is not putting Albertans first and that’s the difference between us.

I will always, always put Albertans first, no apologies.”

In another interesting move right out of the gate, Smith has decided to

seek election in the vacated seat in Brooks-Medicine Hat. This seat was vacated by Michaela Frey, who had announced her intention not run again, but resigned Oct. 7, opening the door for Smith who wants to represent rural Alberta.

But in a twist it is also the home riding of Alberta Party leader Barry Morishita, who is the former mayor of Brooks and a former president of the Alberta Municipalities Association.

Now I like Morishita. I’ve met him several times and I agree with several of the Alberta Party policies, but since getting wiped out in the last provincial election the party has done nothing to raise its profile. In this day and age, if you don’t have a high profile to get noticed in either mainstream or social media, you aren’t going anywhere.

But if Smith wipes out Morishita in Brooks Medicine Hat it will make the next provincial election a twohorse race, and Alberta could use the option of the third choice between the UCP and the NDP.

And one last thing Smith has to do: Unite the UCP! Immediately following her election, high profile conservative Ken Boessenkool writing in True North stated, “I just can’t get it out of my head that Danielle Smith’s political project is best viewed as a kamikaze mission. Winning the Alberta UCP leadership, as she did on the sixth ballot, is like watching that finely wrought party strap itself into the plane.”

He added he wished her well, but she was taking not just pages but “entire chapters” from the Donald Trump playbook.

I would disagree with that assessment, but a person with Boessenkool’s stature I would rather see working with Smith and the UCP than opposing them vocally and in print.

For Smith the real work has now started.

WORD ON THE STREET Garage broken into and gas stolen On October 3, Police responded to a complaint of a suspicious person who ran out of the ditch towards the complainant’s vehicle asking to use his cellular phone. Members located a 34-year-old male who appeared to be intoxicated. The male requested a ride to Viking, no ride was provided.

That afternoon, police received a request from Ontario Provincial Police. They had located a travel trailer and the registered owner last resided in Bruce.

Members attended the residence and the residence appeared to be unoccupied.

That same afternoon, police received a report of a fraud. The complainant purchased property over a buy and sell page, the money was transferred but no property was received. This matter is ongoing.

Also, that day, police entered into a theft investigation. The complainant advised that his tenants had moved out of his rental property and took his furniture.

This matter is still under investigation.

That evening, police received a report of an attempted break and enter. The complainant advised there was a male on his property who approached his garage.

The subject did not gain entry as the door was locked. When the motion sensor lights activated the subject left the yard.

The complainant found the gas cap to his side by side on the ground and gas appeared to have been siphoned from the gas tank. This matter is still under investigation.

That same evening, police responded to a complaint of an abandoned quad. The owner of the quad was contacted and advised they had parked there to take a walk around town.

On October 4, police received a complaint of a

suspicious vehicle driving around Bruce. The driver was spoken to by the complainant and stated he was looking for his girlfriend. The licence plate provided was not a match. The vehicle was not located.

That afternoon, a report of a break and entered was received.

The complainant’s garage was broken into and gas was stolen.

There was no surveillance on site, no suspects have been identified.

On October 5, police responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle parked on an approach.

Members attended the location provided and no vehicle was found.

Also, this day, police learned that three people had failed to attend court in Vegreville to answer to unrelated charges previously laid by Viking RCMP. Warrants for arrest were issued for Barry Mizner, Clifford Gladue and Karis Guest.

Upon arrest, all three will be facing additional charges for failing to attend court.

Late that morning, police received a complaint of a suspicious person. The complainant stated there was a male walking on a rural road; once the male saw the complainant’s vehicle he ran and hid in the ditch.

The complainant slowly drove past the location and once past the male crawled back up out of the ditch. The complainant backed up and the male again went into the ditch and hid. Police attended the location and made extensive patrols and were unable to locate anyone.

Early that afternoon, police received a complaint of a break, enter and mischief. The complainant stated that a property under foreclosure was broken into and appliances have been removed.

Unable to determine if it was the

previous owners who had taken the property or by unknown subjects.

Later that afternoon, police received a complaint of a hit and run.

The complainant parked in the parking lot of a local business and her vehicle was struck.

On October 6, police responded to a complaint of a break, enter and theft at a local business. This matter is still under investigation.

On October 7, police received a complaint of a fraud over Instagram.

The complainant was contacted through Instagram wanting to send him money for a picture he had posted on Instagram. The complainant sent a cheque to the requested location.

Fortunately, the bank was contacted and the money has been reversed.

Later that morning, a complaint of an erratic driver was reported.

Members were unable to locate the vehicle in question. A request and description of the vehicle was sent to the Tofield RCMP. The Tofield RCMP located and stopped the vehicle. The driver was spoken to and was unable to determine the reason for the erratic driving pattern.

That afternoon, a motor home was located on a rural road. The

motor home was determined to be stolen. This criminal investigation is continuing.

That same afternoon, a complaint of an erratic driver was reported. The vehicle was not located and the Camrose RCMP and Camrose City Police were advised of the vehicle description. The vehicle was located and stopped, the driver provided a sample of his breath resulting in a pass. The driver was given a verbal warning about his driving behaviour.

Late that afternoon, police received a complaint of harassment.

The complainant advised that he is involved in an ongoing criminal matter and the subject of the file has been driving by his residence. The complainant was advised that it was not illegal to use the public roadways but if the subject enters onto the complainant’s property the subject could be charged.

That evening, police received a complaint of a theft. The complainant reported that her cell phone was stolen. Police spoke with the complainant and she advised that she did not know if it was stolen or if she just misplaced it. The complainant did not want Continued on Page 7

'Precipitous increase' in those seeking FCSS services Patricia Harcourt Editor

The intake levels of people needing services from Viking/Beaver Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is on the rise these days.

So much so that the local FCSS Director Dawn Chrystian is calling the increase “precipitous” in nature.

“We have seen a precipitous increase in the number of individuals accessing services,” said

Chrystian.

But she doesn’t attribute the rise to mental health issues or other stressors necessarily that affect one’s mental health.

“Although mental health issues are certainly a worry for many individuals, I think largely these numbers are due to barriers clients face in accessing other service agencies,” she said, citing Alberta Works and Service Canada as government departments people could use to access aid, if

not for technical difficulties that act as huge barriers.

Chrystian says this is “due to practice changes that make it difficult to determine when or how these agencies may be able to help.”

And she considers the fact that people are accessing help through her services as highly positive step.

“We see it as a success that these individuals are making their way here and looking for assistance

when its needed,” she said, noting that “asking for help is often the most difficult part.”

And people’s awareness that FCSS is present in the community and ready to help has also increased markedly.

“We’ve worked very hard to ensure the community knows who we are and what we do, and I think that is part of the increase in numbers,” she said.

the town and county councils who sit on the FCSS board.

In reporting to their local councils, Viking Mayor Laura Yakiwchuk and Division 5 County Councillor Dale Pederson stated the input levels have increased dramatically.

That included 280 dropin clients in June, 180 in July and 119 in August.

Chrystian also reported a “significant need” for donations for the Christmas hamper program this

year, largely due to the rising cost of food. Since last August food prices rose 9.8 %, she noted.

“As always, we are very appreciative of any donations or support we receive from the community,” Chrystian added.

Registrations for Christmas hampers usually open in September.

“We are a bit late by launching in October. It is a large undertaking, so we like to get started as early as possible,” she said.

Local FCSS marks World Mental Health Day Patricia Harcourt Editor

With one in five Canadians expected to experience a mental illness sometime in their lives, World Mental Health Day is a chance to “reach out if you need help.”

The theme is important all year long even if there is only one day, October 10, designated towards it. Especially during this time of pandemic, there is a need to talk about mental health issues as people are pressed to their limits and feeling exhausted by life’s pressures.

There is also the importance of recognizing a mental health issue early so there can be proper diagnosis and effective medical treatment.

Viking/Beaver Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is also trying to do something for those who wish to get some help themselves.

“In regards to mental health, and particularly World Mental Health Day, we believe that peer support is significant in regards to supporting individuals dealing with mental health concerns,” said FCSS Director Dawn Chrystian.

But people in crisis should not wait for help.

Calling you health care provider, or 911, is a good step if this is an emergency.

“Your doctor or care provider can give you immediate support, and can also connect you with a range of programs and other supports,” said Alberta Health Services article.

AHS also has counselling services for youth through community mental health clinics. There are also specialized and hospital based services that can treat mental health issues.

“And embrace the power of connection,” AHS advises. If you are struggling, reach out to someone you trust. Talk to a family member or friend who may be able to help you work through day-

RCMP holding a town hall in Viking Patricia Harcourt Editor

Anyone who wants to find out more about what the police are doing locally, make comments or express concerns will have an outlet for it next week.

Viking RCMP will hold a town hall meeting with Viking and area residents the evening of Wednesday, October 19, at the Carena.

The meeting is dubbed a “community engagement” event and the RCMP want to discuss policing issues with the public.

The initiative is to increase communication going

forward as well as awareness of the work of the RCMP as it pertains to local issues.

“We would like to hear from the community about concerns and positive impact that the RCMP is making in the community,” said Acting Commander Anita Doktor, Viking Detachment.

“This is a time when you can ask the RCMP questions about policing in their community,” she explained. “We will be providing information about property theft - how to help curb it and report it.”

RCMP evacuate residences in Sedgewick, male arrested and charged with obstructing police On Oct. 4, at approximately 4 p.m., Killam RCMP located the suspect related to an ongoing investigation that had been completed in conjunction with the Eastern Alberta District RCMP Crime Reduction Unit into fraud, possession of stolen property and obstruction, outside his residence in Sedgewick.

The 24-year-old male suspect fled into his residence. Killam RCMP established containment of the residence and efforts to have the suspect surrender to police were unsuccessful.

Further investigation led to information that the male may have been in possession of firearms and as a result, several area residences were evacuated for public safety.

RCMP Emergency Response Team officers attended and assisted with containment. At approximately 8 p.m., the suspect was arrested in the alleyway

behind his residence when he attempted to flee the area.

Charles James Dixon (24), a resident of Sedgewick, Alta., is charged with: · Obstructing a Peace Officer; · Possession of stolen mail; · Possession of stolen credit cards (x6); · Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; · Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (x7); · Forgery (x2); Following a judicial hearing, Dixon was released on cash bail with conditions to attend Killam Provincial Court on Nov. 1.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further details can be provided.

2023 road construction Viking students awarded projects approved - councillor questions perceived lack of work in his division Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Council approved its 2023 road construction projects regarding the TerraCem program.

The roads include 0.6 miles in Carey Ridge Estates; 0.3 miles in Twp. Rd. 502 from Carey Ridge Estates entrance to R.R. 205; 3 miles at Twp. Rd. 490 from Highway 36 east to R.R. 124; and, 2 miles of various repairs of cement/chip for roads done in 2018 requiring repair.

In his report to council, Dan Blackie, GM of Infrastructure, told council: “All culverts in these locations will need to be assessed and changed this fall to allow for them to settle prior to cementing.

Currently the only confirmed location is Carey Ridge Estates.”

The financial cost to these roads was set at $1.8 million, or $300,000 per mile. The funding will come from Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) capital and Federal Gas Tax grants, he reported.

He told council that the costs include the use of equipment, stating it was “all included.”

However, Division 4 Councillor Barry Bruce stated ratepayers have been questioning him about the quality of the roads in his division.

“There’s a perception that Division 4 is being left out of the equation,” he said, noting that, “there are roads that could benefit from shoulder pulls.”

Bruce inquired if there were any plans to have work done on the

roads in his division in the future.

Blackie replied: “Yes, this year we had to blow up the 5-Year Program.” He explained that the plan starts with Twp. Rd. 490. “I want to go west after that and start ramping up the township roads,” based on what was in the county’s strategic priorities plan.

Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1) asked Blackie when the last time roadwork had been done in the hamlets of Kinsella and Bruce.

Blackie listed, among others, that work on roads had been done on Bruce’s main street and water station road, and in front of the Bruce Stampede grounds.

But for Kinsella, it has been seven years since any work has been done, he said.

He promised the department would review the plans over the winter, “and look at the entire county for a (new) road plan.”

A motion to approve the 2023 program for TerraCem by Division 2 Councillor Lionel Williams was then passed.

Councillor Dale Pederson (Division 5) said he “appreciates the spreading out of the maintenance,” but had a question regarding country roads and how indepth public works will have to go to make the needed repairs.

Smook added that he would like to see the road strategy going forward, noting: “Some (areas) seem to get more attention.”

Beaver County Council agreed to support the Viking RCMP’s 2022-2023 community priorities list at council’s regular meeting October 5.

The list was presented to the Governance and Priorities Committee (GPC) on September 28 by Acting Commander Anita Doktor of the Viking Detachment.

The priorities were outlined for council by Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Kayleena Spiess. They included the following: 1. Increasing community relations by improving police visibility; 2. A renewed emphasis on traffic safety regarding both motor vehicles and roads; and, 3. Reducing property thefts and other crime with an increase in initiatives targeting the prolific criminals who do most of it.

Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1) noted there was a “good discussion” with Doktor at the GPC meeting.

Councillor Dale Pederson, who represents Division 5 where the Viking Detachment is located, said: “I’m pleased to see council getting involved. It looks promising to me.”

County supports local Victim Services with letter, request to meet minister Patricia Harcourt Beaver County is sending a letter to the Minister of Justice and Solicitor General regarding its opposition to the redesign of Victim Services in the province.

The letter supports another sent by the Town of Tofield stating this redesign would negatively affect victim services in Beaver County.

The redesign proposal calls for the elimination of existing Victim Service entities delivered by municipalities, including Beaver County Victim Services.

In its place would be a new provincial body composed of just four service delivery zones.

Beaver County would fall into the North East Zone, and the local board would no longer operate, although volunteers would still be needed.

Beaver County heard a presentation September 28 by local Victim Services board chair Jim Warren, who opposes the redesign and the loss of local Victim Services operations.

The Town of Tofield is cosponsoring a resolution at the upcoming Alberta Municipalities convention.

“Beaver County fully supports (Tofield) Town Council’s position on this matter,” states

the county in its letter of support.

Concerns expressed included whether or not there would be a loss of local staff and volunteer advocates.

“The staff and volunteer advocates who work tirelessly to provide services to victims of trauma cannot and should not be replaced,” states the county, in its letter. “Their knowledge of area residents and their connections to support services are well established and these relationships will be fractured by a change in personnel.”

Another concern was the potential for a reduction in the scope of services that would result with a new model, stating it “lacks insight and compassion.”

This relates to the fact that the new model would deal strictly with trauma due to criminal activity. In Beaver County, Victim Services also helps people who are in accidents and fires, experience a sudden death of a loved one, suicide attempts, and other situations.

These individuals “…are no less victims than those who have experienced theft, fraud and break and enter incidents,” states the latter.

“The current Victim Services

model provides the support that individuals need across the wide breadth of traumatic experiences. If this support is no longer available, demand on the Alberta health care system (i.e. mental health supports) will increase.”

In the new model, the county states that it appears Beaver County “is being penalized for their innovation and drive to develop a program that is tailored to our region,” as seen through its fundraising that allows for the maximum supports it can provide.

Locally, the letter also states that Beaver Emergency Services commission (BESC) “relies heavily on Victim Services to provide support to individuals in crisis while emergency responders deal directly with the situation at hand.” BESC includes Victim Services “as a key resource, and a strong, consistent working relationship between the staff in each organization is necessary to ensure a cohesive approach to crisis management.”

And, finally, the zone model will “lose sight of the particular nuances that reflect our local communities,” which vary across the zones proposed. This results in lack of local direction causing gaps in support services

for the local area.

“Beaver County’s Victim Services has evolved over time to meet our residents’ changing needs.” The letter concludes with: “Our model works, don’t change it!”

The September 22 letter was signed by Reeve Kevin Smook.

The letter has now been sent directly to the minister in support of the Alberta Municipalities convention resolution co-sponsored by the Town of Tofield. Tofield had requested that the county send its letter of support directly to the minister after receiving it themselves, explained county CAO Kayleena Spiess.

The county has also put in a request to meet with the Minister of Justice regarding the issue either at the convention or the Alberta Legislature.

Reeve Smook (Division 1) informed council he had called the Mayor of Tofield, Deb Dueck, who is setting up a meeting with local Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely for October 27.

“I think it’s vital to be there,” he said, suggesting the county’s letter be forwarded to the MLA as well.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) stated he wished to be included in any talks, along

with council as a whole. “I think its a county-wide thing (and) and we should approach it from our viewpoint.”

CAO Spiess said it was unclear if the minister would be attending the convention, but Smook suggested council try to meet at the Legislature, which “has been done before…If he won’t come see us maybe we can go to him,” calling it “so important to the county.”

Councillor Lionel Williams (Division 2) asked for more information, but CAO Spiess said it was not forthcoming at this time. “We are in the dark,” she said. “We expect it to be a long process,” estimating a year or two in the making.

“They are just as much in the dark as we are,” she said, speaking of the province.

It was noted that the Minister of Justice at the time of the council meeting was Tyler Shandro, who is the initiator of this new Victim Services Model. But council was aware that after a new UCP leader was to be elected on Oct. 6 there would be a new premier as well and things might change in terms of who is running different provincial departments.

Campgrounds Closed for the Season Black Nugget Lake, Camp Lake Campgrounds and online reservations are now closed for the Season. Both campgrounds have seen increases in campers in the past few years. This year we saw some new faces as we partnered with Go East of Edmonton Rural Tourism, by being sticker stations for the Road Trip Adventure Game. No doubt, residents and visitors are catching onto the great experience they can have right here in Beaver County.

Black Nugget Lake, features 90 sites, open May – October. 6 full service sites, 33 powered sites, 39 non-serviced sites. At Black Nugget Lake, it’s been a great year for bird watching, we have had numerous pelicans, and migratory water fowl. Black Nugget Lake is long and winds around the campground, making it perfect for kayaking, canoeing and hiking.

Visitors are also enjoying the new improvements and green spaces. Visit the day use areas, perfect for a day of fishing and picnicking.

In spring of 2022 visitors saw an upgraded concession, public washrooms and showers. In 2022 a dump station renovation was started to be completed by spring of 2023. The lake continues to be a popular draw – each year Black Nugget is stocked with rainbow and tiger trout. We encourage you to come out to catch some spectacular sunsets and fish! Claystone Waste Proposed Compost Facility Claystone Waste recently announced that it will be constructing a compost facility at the landfill near the Village of Ryley (on SE 10-50-17-W4, northeast of the Village).

Camp Lake Park, features 73 sites, 20 powered, 41 non-serviced, 5 powered group sites (min of 3 units per group site but room for more) 7 non-serviced group sites (min 3 units per group site but room for more). Camp Lake is open May – September. For reservations call (780) 336-3414 during regular camping season office hours, or book on line beginning March 1, 2023 (online only) at www.campreservations.ca.

The proposed compost facility will accept up to 20,000 tonnes of organic waste per year which will be transformed into usable compost. For more information regarding the proposed facility, please go to www.claystonewaste.com/ residential/landfill. Prior to construction, Claystone Waste must obtain a development permit from Beaver County. An application has been submitted and is currently under review.

An Environmental Impact Assessment may be requested if there is uncertainty regarding potential impacts.

Holden Post Office holds pie social, over $600 raised Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

The Holden Post Office was hopping Oct. 5 when at least 80 people took part an annual pie social fundraiser supporting Canada Post’s C o m m u n i t y Foundation for Children. The event raised just over $600.

In an emailed statement, Postmaster Lynn Laskoski said 40 pies were donated to the social this year, by Holden Rural Academy as well as local businesses and residents.

She said the Holden

Post Office also did their annual raffle draw in conjunction with the pie social, where a special edition silver dollar, The Platinum of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, was won

by Holden Canada Post term employee Dwayne Pope.

The coin is valued at nearly $70.

“I have been around since the CFFC began back in 2012. We have wonderful local area residents who look forward to this annual fundraiser,” said Laskoski.

Lake Olivia meeting annual meeting held Bart Hodgins A group of about 35 interested members met at Lake Olivia on June 5 for the annual meeting.

President Bart Hodgins called the meeting to order and welcomed all attending. Everyone was introduced and most had family plots at the cemetery. Secretary Justin Piwowar read the minutes of last June’s meeting. Treasurer Tracy Beaumont gave the financial report.

There have been a lot of donations this past year in memory of family members buried recently and years ago. No election was held this year and the board including Greg Beaumont, Brandon Beaumont and Warren Hodgins will remain to work with the elected executive. Once again the Harray family will be the hired caretakers. They have been grooming the cemetery for many years.

We thank Bullzeye Safety Consulting Ltd. for the donation of a new “outhouse.” The old wooden one was beyond repair. A slightly used plastic model will be much easier to maintain.

Justin has set up a Facebook page and is slowly collecting family stories to share. With this we hope to continue to find and print articles about nearly forgotten members of our community and their families.

Greg has updated the map and Justin has placed a version on the page to make it easier for all to find family plots.

The page can be found by searching for: Lake Olivia Cemetery Co-workers of Brent Beaumont at the hospital donated a granite bench to our cemetery. A great seat to relax on when anyone visits Lake Olivia.

Our sympathies go to the families of Irving Beaumont, Harriet Newby, Bruce Bridgeman, Louise Mihill, Annie Haydon and Dale Haydon, who were buried at the cemetery this past year.

With the meeting adjourned the group were treated to a meet and greet of the executive and to hotdogs, treats and a lot of reminiscing. We are glad for all who attended and we will see you all next June for another family get together.

Generous donations for Food Bank

The freezers at the Viking/Holden and Area Food Bank are full following a generous donation of ground beef from Fred Ruzicka and Denny and Karen Rabby. Shown in photo are, from left: Fred Ruzicka, Harvey Ross (assisted with delivery), and Donna Congdon (site co-ordinator for the Food Bank). The Ruzicka and Rabby families as well as Mike Patterson have supplied meat to the Food Bank for several years. The faithful support of these families is very much appreciated and enables the Food Bank to continue to provide for the needs of the community.

Colin & Barbara’s share: $9,325@ This is Colin and Barbara. In 2021, they got a $9,325 profit shares return, which they invested in their 2000acre grain and cattle operation – land that Colin’s great grandfather homesteaded in 1905. Colin grew up on this farm. Though they’re not ready to be ‘town-people,’ the couple is looking to slow down a little. They’re making the move to a smaller farm – land that’s been in Barbara’s family for 106 years. Between them, that’s nearly 223 years of family farming history in their area.
