Community partners team up for traffic safety initiative SUBMITTED ARTICLE Elk Island Traffic Safety Partners along with local municipalities are excited to announce a new initiative coming to a community near you. In 2015, a local group of community partners met with the Alberta Traffic Safety Consultant to discuss locally emerging issues and concerns regarding safety in our communities. These partners included representatives from the Town of Lamont, Town of Bruderheim, Village of Chipman, Lamont County, FCSS Lamont County Region, Fort Saskatchewan RCMP, Alberta Health Services and Elk Island Public

Schools. The main focus of the group were concerns of speed awareness and reduction within our local Towns, Villages and throughout rural Lamont County. Statistically, speed related collisions in towns and cities cause more property damage, in rural areas of Alberta they cause more fatalities. Since 2015, the Partners have grown to include the Town of Mundare and the Village of Andrew and our first initiative was created. With financial support received from the Alberta Traffic Safety Grant, the group has purchased two speed

boards to be utilized in a new speed awareness campaign which commenced in the month of September 2017. These speed boards will be rotated and shared by participating municipalities to collect local data and increase speed awareness for local drivers and pedestrians. Data collected will be utilized by the EITP committee to organize targeted enforcement and provide information and education for future initiatives. Data will also be published in the Lamont Leader and local municipal newsletters so that local residents may also be kept informed.

Keep your eyes peeled for a speed board in the Town of Lamont in October and in other communities in the months to come.

Opinion Face to face

I stopped in at the pancake breakfast at the Bruderheim Seniors Centre Saturday morning. I don’t often get a chance to chit chat for the sake of chit chat alone, as normally I’m asking questions in the form of an interview for story ideas or articles. Talk quickly turned to the election, and I asked one of the gals at our table what she thought of candidates who don’t campaign door to door? She said with having no personal connection to the candidate they would just be looking at an unfamiliar name on the ballot, where as having spent a few minutes of one-on-one face time would allow them to see the candidate, listen to them, have them listen to them, etc. She also said she thought the candidate was very considerate of them, their time, and what they had to say. Living in the fringe of a large county, and not in one of the urban centres, she said she appreciated the opportunity to share her thoughts, ideas, questions and concerns. My impression was that by taking the initiative and making the effort, the candidate was truly interested in them and their points of view. I think the door to door opportunity made her feel valued as a person, and as a taxpayer, and their voice was just as important as any other. Running for public office conveys the candidate’s desire to serve the public, and an integral part of that is having the desire to listen and then to understand what the public wants and needs. If a candidate is planning on serving the public it is imperative they are well informed, and in tune with the issues, challenges, programs and services that taxpayers face on a regular or even day to day basis. One of the most fundamental components is infrastructure. Roads, water, sewer; while not exciting, they are essential to daily living. Garbage, recycling, snow removal, grass cutting and how things are operated and maintained are essential services for all taxpayers. Basic programs, and support for health care, social and recreational services are also important in the overall scheme of things. Quality of life is also a big consideration for residents in a community. What job opportunities are available? As well, what is available as far as schools, community groups, extracurricular opportunities, special events, etc. does the village, town or city have to offer. All of the above are key things to consider when people decide to lay down roots or pull up roots. Lastly, how friendly and welcoming people can determine, in part, whether someone wants to rent or buy a home, work or live in a particular community. It is also incumbent upon taxpayers to get to know what they can about all of the candidates before they go to the polls. In the end, it’s the voice of the people that matters the most. From Where I Sit: Good Questions

By Hazel Anaka The other day while I was on a parts run to Nisku, I knew I had time to dawdle because God knows there is NO combining action happening. Normally I like South Edmonton Common about as much as I like West Edmonton Mall, which is to say not much at all. However, I force myself to go to places like that just to keep my world from shrinking. I don’t want to turn into one of those people who can just barely make it to

Londonderry Mall or Walmart at Fort Saskatchewan. Driving in a constantly changing big city is one of those ‘use it or lose it’ skills. Consider it immunization against paralysis. In order for it to work you need booster shots. Don’t drive to difficult areas once a year and expect landmarks to be unchanged and your confidence level intact. I decided to visit Indigo. While I’m no stranger to book stores, this one is big and out of the way, so it felt new. Regular readers of this column have seen me gush on about the genius of Julia Cameron (author of The Artist’s Way and countless other titles). In that groundbreaking work, she recommends that every creative person (which is all of us, by the way) do what she calls the Artist Date: a weekly solo “excursion, play date” that “nurtures your creative consciousness.” It may manifest as

a long nature walk, window-shopping, attending church, fingering yarn in a shop, baking, traipsing through a museum, doing whatever you damn well please that makes you feel refreshed, renewed, inspired. For me, that can mean going to a bead or fabric shop, art gallery or museum. Or losing track of time making jewelry. Or reading or writing in a library lounge area. Or browsing in a bookstore for as long as the spirit moves me. It means not hurrying because Roy is waiting in the car. Or adding it to a mile-long list of errands, but lingering in whichever area calls to me. It’s important to note that Artist Dates needn’t cost a penny. This trip happened to cost more than a few pennies. I bought a Look and Find book for Kade’s upcoming November birthday and an interactive book for my own October

Crystal Inverarity Ad Sales

retreat. Focusing my retreat time with some solid intentions while allowing freedom to do nothing or change my mind is most satisfying to me. In true delayed gratification I’ve committed to not peeking until I’m ensconced in our time-share in Canmore. To combat the nervous energy that accompanies this no-go harvest I just may start packing for Canmore. This harvest delay drives me crazy. I know the Serenity Prayer. I believe its underlying premise but it is a real challenge to ‘live it.’ Maybe this is one of those ah-ha moments that require further introspection. Is refusing to ‘accept what is’ causing me grief? In what other areas of my life am I denying the reality of the situation? Would life be easier if I could reframe my outlook? Good questions, from where I sit.

The best time to begin making your prearrangements is NOW, while you’re thinking about it. While some people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s may think it’s too early, many people find that prearranging their funeral is smart financial planning and gives them added peace of mind knowing they aren’t leaving this burden to family members. By taking time now to collect cost information and calmly making choices related to your own funeral arrangements, you’ll be protecting your family against the stress of having to make these decisions at a time of extreme emotional distress. Octoberfest celebration returns to St. Michael Michelle Pinon Editor

Break out your lederhosen and bring your favourite beer stein because Octoberfest is back! The St. Michael Recreational Centre will be the venue for Octoberfest celebrations on Saturday, October 28, and tickets are usually sold out, so don’t wait. “You can’t forget about the sauerkraut,” says Doris Wendorff, who has been an integral part of the culinary aspect of the celebration for eight years now. Doris, and her husband Gero immigrated from Germany to the Lamont area before purchasing their own quarter section near St. Michael 35 years ago. They have three children and 11 grandchildren who love to take part in

the family friendly culinary and cultural celebration. Other items on the menu are the ever popular bratwurst, Bavarian

meat loaf, Kassler, (smoked pork loin), German cabbage salad, picked beets, mashed potatoes, squash soup and pretzels, apple

strudel and other German desserts. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, beautifully decorated, and besides a fabulous meal,

attendees will be treated to a performance by the Edmonton Schuplatters dance troupe. Later on in the evening, folks can dance to the sounds of “Mike & The Relics”.

“It’s a great way to celebrate German heritage,” says Doris, who hopes harvest will be completed by the time the event kicks-off.

New Horizons Drop In Centre donates to new seniors lodge Michelle Pinon Editor

Representatives of the Lamont New Horizons Drop In Centre presented a donation of $10,500 to the Lamont County Housing Foundation (LCHF), on Thursday, October 10. The funds will be used to furnish three resident suites in the new seniors lodge, and LCHF Chief Executive Officer Harold James expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation on behalf of the board, staff and management to members of the Lamont New Horizons Drop In Centre. James went on to say, “Each suite will consist of a bed frame and headboard, mattress, chest of

drawers, bedside table with one locking draw and a chair. Residents will be given the choice to bring a favourite chair or other piece of furniture for their own use. “ The floor area of each suite is approximately 350 square feet, noted James, and the flooring design has a designated bed sitting area, with a handicap design washroom, closet, walk-in shower with a desk and counter space for a microwave oven. James said the building systems are currently being inspected and verified; the expected turn over date as November 1, 2017. Following a period of commissioning and receipt of a valid Accommodation Licence

from Alberta Health Standards Branch we should be ready for occupancy in early November.” The first group of 25 residents will be moved from the current Beaverhill Pioneer Lodge into the new facility, added James, and the second group will be assessed from a collection of approximately 30 applications. “We are expected to reach 85 per cent occupancy within the first year of operation, and full occupancy within two years of opening our new lodge.” James expects an announcement for an official opening and open house will be made in the near future.

Lamont Elementary School welcomes new principal and assistant principal Michelle Pinon Editor

Judy Anderson and Jay Robertson share a lot of the same common interests, and now the two highly skilled and experienced educators are working side by side as Principal and Assistant Principal at Lamont Elementary School. Both teachers worked together for a time in Sherwood Park before earning the top jobs at Lamont Elementary School this year. “I taught his kids and he taught my son,” said Judy with a smile. Admittedly, they work well together. Jay says they finish each others’ sentences. Jay said it was time for a change, and when a new challenge presented itself, he jumped at the chance of transferring to a different type of setting and location. Interestingly, Jay said his first teaching job was in Mundare 20 years ago. Judy said she started off in southern Alberta, and worked her way north,

with her last posting as assistant principal at Glen Allan Elementary School in Sherwood Park. “We’re having lots of fun and putting in lots of hours,” said Judy, who mentioned how blessed they are to have school secretary Wendy Motiuk

by their side. Robertson said the focus is on “literacy and numeracy” and “making sure we have people in place to succeed.” This year, they have added a third kindergarten class with additional time for literacy and math. They have spent the

better part of the last month and a half getting to know the staff and students. “We’re working hard to create opportunities for communication,” added Jay. They are in the process of building connections, and invite community members to stop in and say hello.

MICHELLE PINON PHOTO

Lamont Elementary School Principal Judy Anderson and Assistant Principal Jay Robertson say they have been warmly welcomed by staff, parents and community members, and have a lot planned during the 2017-’18 school year.
