Slick roads result in damage to CN crossing

It was reported that a gravel truck jackknifed, ran into, and knocked down one of the railway crossing poles at the Highway 834 crossing by Highway 14 mid-morning on Monday, Oct. 23. Snow has fallen and winter conditions are upon us. The truck had been removed by the time the photo was taken only a few hours later. Ravenhill Agencies in Tofield held a grand reopening on Tuesday, October 17.

The business recently completed renovations to the interior of the building, to create a more comfortable and welcoming atmosphere.

“We are just trying to brighten up our space for the team, that’s the

biggest part, but also bringing a presence of a professional place. We love the community and so we wanted a nice place because a lot of people come in to say hello,” said Ravenhill Agencies President and Chief Operations Officer (COO) Caleb Maksymchuk.

“Our business is with people, interacting, and being there and part of the community,” he said.

Plans for a renovation had been in the works, but then COVID hit and it was delayed.

“Originally the space was very wide open but we believe in having closed-off offices, as it's a professional business and a lot of personal talks occur,” said Maksymchuk.

Maksymchuk said Ravenhill just celebrated its 40th year, and their core values of integrity, honesty, and service have stood the test of time.

Over 60 people came out to enjoy the free burgers, and two large bins of items were collected for the food bank. Ravenhill promised to match the donations, and will be donating $500 to the Tofield/Ryley and Area Food Bank.

“Our goal is to bring attention to insurance and how important it is, but also that we’re very happy to be in this community and we’re going to be here for a while; we’re not going anywhere,” said Maksymchuk.

Full steam ahead for resurrected Ryley Preschool Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

Ryley Preschool is six weeks into a fresh year at their new location inside Ryley School and preschool coordinator Larissa Holowachuk said, so far, it’s going better than expected.

“It's going a lot better than anticipated. Change is always hard, but we seem

to be settling into a routine, (and) the staff has been wonderful,” she said.

The preschool was shut down last year, for the first time in 23 years after their long-time location at the Good News Church was no longer available, leaving dozens of families with no local preschool program for the 21-22 school year.

Since then, Holowach struck an agreement with

the Ryley School for space to run the preschool and began classes Sept. 12.

Holowachuk said the new space affords the program resources that weren’t available before.

“We’ve (used) the library, the gym, and we’ve already been on one field trip to the K3 Corn Maze,” she said.

“The classroom (also has) this amazing amount

of bulletin board space.

That's been great because we haven't had that before.

And we can have more centres (for children to take turns at such as) a light table, sensory table and a dress up rack. We’re quite happy with what we’re able to supply for the kids.”

Holowachuk added that the preschool has also acquired a big dollhouse and a fire station playset.

Instead of a traditional Halloween party this year, Holowachuk said there is a field trip scheduled to the Amazone Playzone, indoor playground in Edmonton.

“We normally do a Halloween party, but this year we will go going to the Amazone Playzone. We have six field trips planned this year, including the Telus World of Science,

Reynolds Museum and Milner Library,” she said.

Holowachuk said she transports the children using the preschool’s handy-van that can seat 18.

Meanwhile, enrollment for the program so far is at 10 children between the ages of three and five and Holowach said there is room for more.

“We can take up to 25 kids,” she said, adding children can be enrolled at

any time throughout the school year. “We run one program twice a week.”

In terms of parent feedback, Holowach said parents are happy the preschool is back.

“I think everybody felt the lack of something for the kids, lack of a program,” she said. “Parents (are) thrilled (it’s back) because some of their kids would have been in last year as well.”

Some parents who have their children in after-school activities involving the skating rink had been travelling elsewhere while the Tofield Arena was undergoing repairs.

“Tofield Operations Staff discovered a mechanical failure directly tied to ice-making requirements the morning of October 6. Due to the nature of the failure, staff and external parties were required to make significant fixes over many days,” said

Tofield Agricultural Society President Dave Berrecloth.

“This required the rebuilding of components, as well as on boarding new replacement pieces. Because of this loss, this has forced the arena ice preparations to be delayed.

“Our crews and contractors have worked long, tireless hours to have the fixes made, and the ice making has been completed with ice activities started as of this past weekend. The root cause of the loss has been identified and corrected,” he said.

In an average year, the ice is put in around late September, so the community has seen a three week delay in access to the rink.

“The good news is that the arena is fully up and running. We're excited and happy about that, as we had a late start,” Berrecloth said.

“We understand the frustration and disappointment with our user groups and wish to thank them for their patience during this exceptionally challenging time. This has been a challenging piece to work through, and we

appreciate all efforts that took place to have the official ice season brought back on track,” he said.

You may be aware that Benjamin Moore Paints chooses a ‘colour of the year’ every fall. For 2024 they’ve chosen a ‘cosmic’ blue-violet blend called Blue Nova that ‘encourages adventure; beckoning you to explore and indulge in new experiences.

Obviously, the people responsible for making this annual choice sees more in a can of paint than I do; my description doesn’t go beyond ‘looks a lot like Slate Blue to me.’

And, being a quilter, I love colours and teaming them up with others so I see Blue Nova with, maybe, orange or aqua or soft sage green.

And a creamy white, not to be mistaken for just plain white or snow white which often has a yellow

tinge to it.

The paint people call Blue Nova a galaxy-inspired colour – isn’t nova another name for star? – and recommend juxtaposing it (a fancy way of saying use it) with dynamic contrasting colours like orange. (Hey, I said that first!)

So it isn’t true that nothing goes with orange.

Want to make a statement? Use it – the blue, not the orange - on your dining room ceiling. That actually sounds like a good idea, especially if you occasionally get uninvited spiders.

My ceilings are all white popcorn and they like to play hide and seek by flattening themselves and hide in plain sight.

Dumb things. Black can’t disappear against white.

Spiders everywhere must be rooting for Blue Nova ceilings. They could hide up there and I’d never know, until one of them lost its grip and fell into my hair.

Also night sky inspired are White Dove, Honeybee, Teacup Rose and Hazy Lilac. (Sorry, Benjamin, you lost me. Guess you had to be there.) And

as for your Best Bedroom Paint picks, which you claim spotlight bold colours, only one (Starry Night Blue) even comes close to being bold.

The others are all muted, with Wenge being the only exception because it’s almost black.

JOHN’S RANT

Still lots of questions around a go-it-alone pension plan Walk into any coffee shop, pub or other social gathering place these days and people are talking pensions.

Should Alberta go it alone or stay in the Canada Pension Plan, a program Albertans have paid into since its inception in 1965?

Myself, I’m not really following the debate either pro or con too much.

I already receive my pension. By the time the dust settles and the court arguments are settled in this debate between Alberta and Ottawa, I really doubt I’ll be around to reap any benefits that may come my way.

As it is, my monthly income based on Old Age Security and CPP isn’t enough to pay my expenses which consist of food and basic utilities. The low amount paid by CPP is very much a cause for concern amongst seniors.

But having chatted with several younger people, one a Federal government worker, and her spouse, they seem to embrace the Alberta plan.

But there’s so many questions and so much that has to be more clearly explained.

One thing is certain, with Justin Trudeau opening his mouth to oppose Alberta’s plan along with the managing director of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, the battle lines are drawn.

Another thing is for certain. Alberta has every right to withdraw from CPP and that is included in the original mandate of the CPP. As initially laid out, the Alberta Plan promises lower payments, bigger monthly cheques, increased benefits for seniors and much more - but the deep down details at this time are

sketchy.

It relies on Alberta getting a payback from CPP of $344 billion which I can’t see happening under any circumstances.

The Alberta premise argues that the provincial workers have paid $60 billion more into the CPP than we have received back since its inception, therefore arguing we’ve been supporting other Canadian workers with our toil.

As this process plays out, it will lead to a referendum for Albertans to indicate how they want to move ahead sometime in 2025.

However Trudeau weighed in, stating, “I have instructed my Cabinet and officials to take all necessary steps to ensure Albertans – and Canadians – are fully aware of the risks of your plan, and to do everything possible to ensure CPP remains intact.

“With all the uncertainty they face, Canadians should not have to worry whether or not the Canada Pension Plan will continue to be there for them in their retirement,” Trudeau said in the letter.

Premier Danielle Smith was quick to rebut the prime minister calling his letter inappropriate, and adding she believes it was made to prove a political point after losing a Supreme Court ruling earlier this month.

“He’s trying to overstate it to make some kind of political point, and quite frankly, I just don’t think that that’s helpful,” explained Smith. “I think we should allow for the process to play out, let Albertans decide because we do have a constitutional right to manage our pensions, under Section 94 of the constitution if the Prime Minister would like to look

that up.”

Smith adds that it would be more constructive for the Prime Minister to offer an alternative calculation, rather than a letter.

My friend and Edmonton Journal columnist David Staples pointed out, if anything, Trudeau’s comments will benefit those supporting the Alberta Pension Plan.

"With his usual mix of bad faith negotiating and irresponsible federalism, Trudeau has managed to make Smith look like the reasonable party in this debate," he wrote. "It’s still the longest of shots, but if Smith alters course there is now one clear path for her to win approval for an Alberta Pension Plan."

Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) president Gil McGowan has waded into the debate stating opposition to an Alberta Pension Plan (APP) needs to come from within the province, and not from Ottawa.

“We need a ‘remain’ campaign – a campaign to keep Alberta in the

Canada Pension Plan (CPP),” McGowan stated.

The battle lines are being drawn up.

What is really needed now is as much information as possible.

Don’t just rely on the government’s arguments. Of course they are tilted to going it alone.

But with the opposition ask this … . are they making strong arguments to remain in CPP or are they just afraid of change?

It’s up to each and every Albertan to do their own research. The information is out there.

Check out bulletins from the Fraser Institute or other think tanks, read up on the CPP on your own.

Prior to any referendum, make sure you make your own informed decision through research, workshops, and discussions with your friends and neighbours. Either way the pension plan plays out, it will affect our lives for a long time.

HRA’s first athletic team competes in tournament Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

Holden Rural Academy, Alberta’s first charter high school, has chalked up a first win for their first sports team over the weekend.

Senior boys’ volleyball team won two out of three games against Camrose in the Forestburg invitational, placing fourth overall out of six teams in the weekend tournament Oct. 21 and 22.

son said he is very proud of the team.

“Having our team compete on the weekend and actually win a match considering that was their first games of our school’s existence was huge for the school,” said Anderson.

Tofield students compete at Zones Lisa Kuflay On Wednesday, Oct. 11, four Tofield School Senior High boys travelled to Red Deer for the 2023 Cross Country High School Zones Championship.

The boys automatically qualified to Zones to compete against students from Red Deer, Camrose,

Lacombe, Stettler, big towns and cities, according to Marcel Flasha, Phys. Ed teacher and Athletic Director for Tofield School.

In individual sports such as Golf, CrossCountry Running, Track and Field, etc. athletes in Senior High compete against every student in the Zone. It is not like

team sports where you compete against schools with the same senior high population.

"The conditions were wet and rainy, but the boys did very well and they have a better outlook for next year. It is a great experience for our students and everyone that enters the sport," said Flasha.

“We’re kind of excited.”

Anderson said HRA did not run an athletics program last year because it was the school’s first year in operation.

He said when he was hired as assistant principal in the spring, it was his goal to get the program up and running but ran into a snag when former principal Brian Dewar announced his retirement ahead of schedule last month, forcing Anderson to take over as principal sooner than he expected.

“When I applied for the assistant principal job, my main thing that I wanted to focus on was getting the athletics program going for the school. (My) background has been as athletics director and

athletics at different schools I've been in, so I wanted to promote that and bring that expertise to the schools,” he said.

“When I found out Brian was going to be leaving very early on, everything got put on the side burner.”

Dewar left HRA on Sept. 29.

Meanwhile, Anderson said the athletics program at HRA is picking up steam. He said they currently have a senior boy and senior girls’ volleyball team and are looking to add more teams including junior and senior basketball.

“From this point forward, we plan on running the same athletic programs as the other schools in our region,” he said. “That would be

golf and cross country, and then badminton and basketball, (and) track and field.”

Anderson said they considered a curling team but there was not very much interest in curling.

Meanwhile, Anderson said the HRA senior boys’ volleyball team played hard and were very tired at the end of the tournament. “(We have) seven players (on the team), and I would say two of them have never played volleyball before,” he said.

“They were pretty tired by the end.”

Upcoming games include the senior girls and senior boys volleyball teams playing at Tofield School Nov. 1.

Smook returned as Reeve at organizational meeting Patricia Harcourt After a split vote by county council, Kevin Smook was returned as Reeve at Beaver County’s annual organizational meeting Oct. 18.

Gene Hrabec lost his bid for the Reeve’s chair but was returned by acclamation as the Deputy Reeve.

Councillor Dale Pederson (Division 5) nominated Hrabec (Division 3 councillor) for the position of Reeve, while Smook (Division 1 councillor) was nominated by Councillor Lionel Williams (Division 2).

Hrabec spoke to his nomination by referring to his past year’s work on council and other committees, stating that he was the person who could move the county forward, citing recent county meetings with provincial ministers as an example.

He also referred to his “strong background” in working and building government relationships. And he took credit for the county’s governance review study and the changes that resulted from this review.

After thanking council “for the honour” of previously serving as Reeve, Smook said he was proud to represent the county at many events.

He listed the meetings attended recently with provincial ministers and parliamentary secretaries.

“Together we are moving the ball up the field,” he said, adding he was “proud of our administrative team.”

After a secret ballot, Smook was declared the winner.

Division 5 Councillor Pederson then nominated Hrabec for Deputy Reeve. With no other nominations Hrabec was declared by acclamation.

Williams became Acting Reeve by acclamation after a nomination from Hrabec.

Interim Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Margaret Jones administered the oath of office to each elected official, then reviewed council’s roles and responsibilities, council code of conduct, the procedural bylaw, the council/CAO covenant and the guide to pecuniary interest for municipal councillors.

Organizational business included appointing Lesley Faith to the Tofield/Beaver County West FCSS Advisory Committee with a term to expire in October 2025.

All of Beaver County Council was appointed to the Agricultural Service Board. After a nomination by Williams, Hrabec became temporary chair of the ASB until the ASB meets to appoint a permanent chair.

County Council then turned to its own committee appointments and decided to stay where they were for the sake of continuity.

However, Reeve Smook was unsuccessful in a bid to sit as the county’s representative on the Highway 14 Regional Water Commission. Already sitting on the commission are Councillor Dale Pederson and alternate Barry Bruce. Neither wished to vacate to accom-

Smook said he wanted to sit on the commission board to try and help with the issues of governance the commission is currently dealing with.

Pederson acknowledged that the commission faces a “challenge,” due to “a lack of municipal knowledge” on the part of some members who are “unaware of a commission’s role.” Pederson added he didn’t think the municipalities on the commission “are abiding by the policies.”

But he wanted to stay on because he knows the history and operations of the commission. Bruce also said he wished to remain on the commission.

Smook said he wanted to see if he could help with the commission’s governance issue.

A secret ballot vote was held between Smook and Pederson with Pederson declared the winner. A motion was then passed declaring Pederson the county representative on the water commission with Bruce remaining as alternate.

However, Pederson did state he wished to withdraw from the Beaver Regional Partnership (BRP) as county representative, and Williams stepped up to take his place. Pederson also stepped away from the county’s Health and Safety Committee where he served for six years.

Hrabec assumed a position on the committee, with Williams and Bruce remaining.

Two other items were deferred to the next

Governance and Priorities Committee (GPC) in early November.

That included the subject of councillor remuneration with Jones stating in her report that a survey had been conducted of council remuneration among other rural municipalities.

“In September, the Governance and Priorities Committee reviewed a high level summary of the survey results and were subsequently provided with additional details,” she stated, noting that “further discussion with the GPC is scheduled for November.”

The report concerned 66 municipalities surveyed, with 34 responding to the survey request. These included the county’s six rural neighbours which were chosen as comparisons for the county, including Camrose County, Flagstaff County, Minburn County, Kneehill County. M.D. of Wainwright and County of St. Paul.

“Survey findings for all municipalities are quite detailed and difficult to condense into an easily readable document,” Jones said, including a long list of general findings.

Recommendations will be referred to county council following the November GPC meeting and discussion.

Also deferred to the next GPC meeting was a policy on councillor telecommunication equipment. The recent councillor remuneration survey included a segment on supply and payment of telecommunications equipment.

Councillor serves notice concerning motion on abandoned and unsightly buildings Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Councillor Barry Bruce has served notice that he intends to introduce a motion at the next meeting of council that will deal with the issue of unsightly buildings.

Bruce, who represents Division 4, said the issue has been discussed for the past six years and nothing has been done. County council has brought forward the problem of unsightly buildings in the Hamlet of Bruce, which lies in Division 4, on several occasions for discussion.

“It is an issue that doesn’t go away,” he said, giving the City of Edmonton’s way of handling the problem as an example of how the county could deal with it.

Administration was asked to draft a bylaw that put derelict properties into a separate subsection for assessment purposes.

Debate and discussion were allowed on his notice of motion, but an actual motion was not required of council to move this forward to the November 1 council meeting.

GPC and county meetings to change in 2024 - one meeting each per month Patricia Harcourt The regular meetings of Beaver County Council and those of the Governance and Priorities Committee (GPC) will change in 2024.

Both types of meetings will often be held on one Wednesday of the month instead of holding both twice a month on the same day.

County council meetings will be held on the third Wednesday of every month beginning at 9:30 a.m. in 2024.

GPC meetings will vary depending on the time of year.

Most will be held on the first Wednesday of each month running from February to June, and also from September to November.

But over the summer holidays and Christmas that routine will change. For January, July, August and December GPC will be held after council meetings on the third Wednesday of those particular months.

Separate budget meetings were set for November 2729 and December 5-6 for 2-24.

Manager of Legislative Services Margaret Jones said the changes were needed to allow committee members to take as long as they needed to discuss items at GPC meetings.

The current schedule for 2023 has GPC meetings followed by council meetings in the afternoon, which means having to break off GPC discussion for the 1 p.m. council meetings.

In 2024, GPC would be held on a day without a council meeting for most months so discussion could be extended, she said. And when GPC meetings are held on certain

months they would be after the council meeting, so “they can just continue on as they are not recorded.”

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) saw this as a chance to allow delegates to speak more than 15 minutes at a time, but wondered if cutting back on meetings due to time issues was the correct move. Both council and GPC currently meet twice a month each which will now change in the New Year.

Hrabec suggested a 9 a.m. start if the committee was dealing with delegations. But Jones said it would be difficult to set the time ahead as GPC doesn’t always know too far in advance if there are delegations.

The GPC could be all-day if necessary, she added, on those meeting days set for the first Wednesday of the month.

Division 2 Councillor Lionel Williams said he agreed with the new format as it will allow for emergent items in the afternoons of GPC meetings.

Jones told council that the GPC meetings have been held once per month for the majority of this year, but more were added for the policy review project in the latter half of 2023.

County council has been hold two council meetings per month, one full day on the first Wednesday of the month and one half-day on the third Wednesday of the month.

“The purpose for establishing the GPC and council meetings on the same day arise from GPC meetings,” she said.

“A review of the GPC and council meeting agenda items in 2023 indicates that this situation occurred in one instance,” referring to a 2022 financial statement that was

presented in April 2023 and approved by council that same afternoon.

“With this in mind, administration recommends that council establish only one GPC meeting and one council meeting per month in 2024.”

The report gave several reasons for this move including the infrequency of the time sensitivity issue.

Also, “Staff are currently finding it difficult to meet operational needs, prepare the meetings and move council’s corporate goals forward when there are three meetings per month,” she said.

Jones also said there would be “significant changes in staff” in the Legislative Services area and time must be allocated “to train and reduce pressure to meet multiple deadlines.”

She added that “longer GPC meetings,” to be held on the first Wednesday of the month starting in 2024 allow for “more thorough discussion of agenda items.

“Currently discussions are sometimes rushed or postponed due to time constraints,” she said.

And fewer meetings in the summer and over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays allow staff to catch up on work, complete special needs projects and take personal time.

Jones noted that if there is a time sensitive issue to deal with a special meeting could be called to deal with it.

“Council can also revisit the regular meeting schedule at any council meeting in which all councillors are in attendance,” said Jones.

Geese practice inclusivity during migration season

Huge flocks of geese, of several different varieties, have been gathering together throughout Beaver County over the past month, near lakes and across freshly harvested wheat fields.

Local bird enthusiast Irene Crosland said it’s the annual migration season and the geese are not picky about who they break grain with. “(They can be a) happy mix of Canadian and Snow Geese, sometimes (mixing) in a pond and sometimes (practicing) segregation,” she said.

“In flight each seems to stick to its own species though at times we see a Greater White-fronted (goose) in with the Snow Geese.”

Croslund said sometimes other type of geese join, including a smaller

white goose with a shorter bill and rounded head, (known as) a Ross's Goose in addition to a smaller species of Canada Goose; the Cackling Goose. She said the geese right now have only one mission in mind; storing as much fat as possible for their long trek.

“They are storing fat for the long journey.

Their whole migration sees them travelling (up to) 4,500 kilometers until they reach their wintering grounds from the mid USA into northern Mexico,” she said.

According to the Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation, a migrating goose can travel up to 1,000 kilometers a day.

Croslund said the annual migration is a ‘progressive venture’ with flocks containing thousands of geese.

“This is a progressive venture and some (geese) come for a short period of time to feed in the farmer's fields, gleaning on grain coming out of the back of a combine at harvest,” she said.

“They continue on and the next wave arrives, often catching favourable winds to assist in the southward migration. Sometimes these flocks contain several 100 but Snow Geese flocks can be as large as 10,000.”

According to the AIWC, geese will start returning to the province in April.

MLA Lovely visits Ryley to share provincial updates Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

Ryley residents got a surprise on the morning of Oct. 22 when Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely appeared at their doors to talk to them about several provincial updates including the Alberta Pension Plan.

“We were there for the majority of the day, and brought out a message with an update about job growth, the affordability action plan, and some photos of various events that I’ve attended in the Constituency,” said Lovely by a later email. “I also (spoke about the possibility of) an Alberta Pension Plan. It will be up to Albertans to decide how we move forward, and I simply wish to provide Information so they may make an informed decision.”

An Oct. 7 poll by Abacus Data showed most Albertans were not in favour of withdrawing from the Canada Pension Plan with 34 percent ranging from it

being an ok idea to a very good idea, 52 percent ranging from bad to very bad idea, and 14 percent did not know where they sat on the issue. The data, which gauged national opinions on leaving the CPP, was pulled from an online survey of 1,985 Canadian adults including 500 Albertans from Sept.

28 to Oct. 5. Quebec, the only province with their own pension plan, was also the only province that showed support for withdrawing from the CPP at 45 percent in favour and 26 percent against. Additionally, 29 percent of Quebecers did not have an opinion on the issue.

Meanwhile, Lovely hopes that if anyone was missed during her visit, they will contact her office directly.

“We’ve done our best to get around to everyone in town, but if we have missed someone, I invite them to contact my office,” she said. “I will continue to make my way through the Constituency.”

Screen Test Mobile Clinic sees over 100 clients Kari Janzen Staff Reporter

Alberta Health Services’ mobile mammography unit was in Tofield from Tuesday, September 26 to Wednesday, October 4 for which 118 appointments were booked.

Chidinma Okoli, the Health Promotion Facilitator for Screen Tests, says there are two mobile units that travel year round throughout the province of Alberta, serving 121 communities including 28 Indigenous communities.

“We have an application process and a review committee. The committee considers factors including the eligible population and the distance from the community to the nearest screen test facility, because we do not need to go to the community that already has access to this service. They also consider parking locations for the trailer because we need a big space to manoeuvre the trailer and to put it into position.

They also need support from the town council or the band council.

Those are a few of the criteria the community will need to meet before they can be added to the schedule,” Okoli said.

The schedule is planned out so that the mobile unit will be at the same locations at roughly the same time each year, so that biennial mammograms can be booked within the proper time frame.

“When it comes to the yearly schedule and trying to determine when to go to which community, it all depends on when the trailer was there last year. We try to go there at around the same

time, because that's when clients will be due for another mammogram,” she said.

A client who has a mammogram performed on the mobile unit will be informed in advance of when the unit will be near them in the future.

“If you’re having your mammogram on the mobile screening unit, you’ll also be sent a list of locations and dates when we will be in your area,” says the AHS Screening for Life website.

Once a screen test has been conducted, it takes about two weeks for the results to come in. Each mammogram is read by a radiologist, and the results are mailed out to the client.

Results can be found online if the client is set up with MyAHS Connect.

Women between the ages of 45 and 74 are recommended to have a mammogram every two years.

“It's all in the characteristics of the breast. A health care provider may say you need to get screened every year, rather than every two years. Doctors compare the past results with the current one to see if there are any changes from the last time they had a mammogram,” said Okoli.

“Mammograms are very good at detecting tumours when they are still small, even before you can feel them.

That's one of the reasons why we recommend mammograms, because sometimes women will perform the clinical breast exam and they think that's okay, but the truth is, even if you're not feeling something, it's possible that there could be a tumour there,” Okoli

said.

“Your return visit is even more important than your first mammogram. The radiologist compares your current and previous mammograms to look for changes – regular mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, when treatment may work better,” the website says.

Women who are under the age of 40 are not required to have mammograms, as it is not recommended as the best tool to detect breast cancer for that age group.

“Mammograms are not beneficial for women under 40 because the breast is too dense at that age. It is difficult for the mammograms to pick up those slight changes in the breast. If someone has a concern, their health care provider can refer them for a di-

agnostic mammogram, which takes more pictures of the breast, trying to diagnose whatever the issue is, but there are other tests that are recommended for people below 40,” she said.

"Breast density is the amount of dense tissue compared to the amount of fat in a person's breasts. It can be

harder to find cancer in dense breasts because this tissue appears white on a mammogram, the same colour as many kinds of breast cancer. It is common to have dense breast tissue. Dense breasts are only one of the many risk factors for breast cancer. Other factors, such as age and genetics, have a bigger im-

pact on your overall risk. You can't tell how dense your breasts are by size, look or feel.

The only way to find out is by having a mammogram.

Routine screening mammography is the best way to find breast cancer early when treatment is most effective,” the website says.

Strong turnout as Tofield Legion holds Autumn Supper fundraiser Kari Janzen Staff Reporter

The Tofield Legion held an Autumn Family Simple Supper on Friday, October 20, serving a sweet and sour style beef stew on rice or potatoes. Around 50 people stopped in for sup-

per and visiting.

“It went over very well.

It is hard to say, because it was kind of come-and-go, but I think they had between 40 and 50 people. It was really well received and it was a fun night,” said Legion President Jim Warren.

The supper was the idea of Clarence and Laurita Blondin, who also donated the food.

“It was their idea and it was a super idea. Clarence and Laurita did 90 percent of the work, and they did a super job,” Warren said.

The cost of the meal was

by donation, and the fundraiser project was a new fridge for the Legion.

“Our cooler in the bar area died after probably 40

years and so we needed a new one, and our finances are very limited. We're the same as every other organization, we have very lim-

ited resources and so we had to fundraise to purchase it because it was a big expense that we hadn't counted on,” said Warren.

Successful weekend for Jr. High Volleyball teams

Between 40 and 50 people came out to the Tofield Legion's supper fundraiser on Friday, October 20. The Legion has plans to replace their 40 year old cooler that has quit.

Tofield Jr. High volleyball teams had a good weekend. Girls hosted at Tofield School and won gold against Viking. Boys hosted at CW Sears and won the silver against Sedgewick.
