Family and friends rally to support seriously injured community member Michelle Pinon Editor

Everyone who knows Jarad Christoffersen loves him. The Chipman Hotel was packed wall to wall with more than 110 people who came to support the native of Chipman the evening of Oct. 25. Friends and family gathered to rally around the well loved 23-yearold man, who still remains in hospital following a serious motor vehicle accident just over a month ago. Even though Jarad remains in a coma, step father Morris Langevin says he is starting to show signs of improve-

ment. Langevin said Jarad has regained consciousness, feeling in his body, and can blink his eyes, and squeeze his hand. Every day Langevin and Jarad’s mom Shelly are at his bedside as well as many of his relatives and friends who have known him since childhood. Things are looking hopeful, and Jarad’s former playschool teacher Miss Moon is very optimistic he will make a full recovery. Feeling helpless is not a feeling Miss Moon is accustomed to or willing to accept, so she, along with good friend Jill, helped organize the fundraiser in his name.

Miss Moon said Jarad is the most polite and kindest person she has ever known, and couldn’t stop some tears from flowing while describing, what a positive impression this young lad has made in her life, and the lives of other people in the community and elsewhere. Deirdre Wheeler, was one of those people. She said the kids who went to school with Jarad made such a bond, a closeness and connectedness that has stuck with them all to this day. “They are so tight and so close, and Jarad’s such an anchor.” “It’s such a wonderful event for my friend,” said Deirdre, who painted a special picture in his honour just for the silent auction. “Kind, loyal, caring and real” were some of the words that came to mind when Wheeler was describing Jarad. Bruderheim resident Joe Culford described

Sgt. Major Thirlwell , left, goes over the strategic plan with W.O. Brett Walton in the parking lot of the Lamont County administration building on Oct. 26. Michelle Pinon Editor

Even though it wasn’t foreign soil, it wasn’t exactly familiar territory for Major Shawn Thirlwell, who led 13 members of the South Alberta Light Horse (SALH) Canadian Forces Army Reserve over terrain with armoured reconnaisance vehicles throughout Lamont County Oct. 26 and 27. Interestingly enough, Mjr. Thirlwell does have

a local connection in that his mother Betty, and his sister Donna reside in Chipman. He has had the opportunity to visit on occasion, and has made sure a representative from SALH has been able to attended yearly Remembrance Day ceremonies in Chipman for many years now. Warrant Officer Brett Walton, who grew up in Fort Saskatchewan, said he has several friends in Lamont, and that it was nice to be back in the

area. Both Mjr. Thirlwell and W.O. Walton agreed that it was nice to see a little bit different terrain, which makes everything fresh again. “It’s good for us to get out in the community,” stated Mjr. Thirlwell. Increasing visibility as well as the size of your footprint in a community are two very good things, added W.O. Walton. He said reservists must be ready at a moment’s notice,

and that’s why training plays such a crucial role in preparedness. Recent examples of this have been fighting fires in British Columbia and recovery efforts during the floods in southern Alberta. While having up to date communications and technology are important for today’s soldiers, Sgt. Garry Rolls said you can’t totally rely on technology, and have to get back to the basics in order to be ready and

fulfill your duties at home and abroad. Sgt. Trent Hewitt also commented on the blending of old and new technology and soldiers which has added to the mix as well as complexity of roles each of them plays. “The younger soliders are more technically astute, and we are more outdoorsy,” added Sgt. Hewitt. In recent years, Mjr. Thirlwell said soldiers have spent a lot of time on mission specific skills,

they are now returning to more general skills training. Members of the regular forces are starting to rely more and more on reservists. Both he, and the rest of the contingent, hope more people will sign up to be reservists (which is totally voluntary) in the future to adequately cover the ever changing landscape at home and abroad.

Benoit reflects on 20 years of reform in Ottawa Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville Wainwright, proudly marked Friday as the 20th anniversary of the October, 1993 election, which saw 52 Reform Party MPs elected to bring change to Ottawa. “It’s certainly a milestone,” said Benoit. “We came to Ottawa demanding respect for taxpayers and hard-working families who play by the rules. I’m proud of what we have been able to accomplish on both the Opposition and Government side of the House.” The 1993 election saw a massive shift in representation across the country, as the ruling Progressive Conservative government was reduced to 2 seats in the House of Commons. While the Liberal Party formed a majority government with the Bloc Québécois in opposition, Preston Manning’s Reform Party won in 52 constituencies, up from a single seat. Benoit was elected in the constituency of Vegreville in 1993, and later served in the Lakeland Constituency from 1997 to 2004. Benoit has served the people of Vegreville-Wainwright since its formation in 2004. “I decided to run for office with many goals in mind for the country,” Benoit continued. “Balancing

the federal budget in three years was part of the election platform. It happened. Rebalancing the justice system so the focus was more on protecting the good people of this country and by giving victims of crime more say has progressed considerably. Lowering taxes for families and business has been accomplished and more can be done. Making our political system more democratic has been attempted but much more progress is needed in this area. A good start will be electing senators to a fixed term of eight to ten years with more to follow.” While marking these notable achievements, Benoit was not dwelling solely on the past. “There is still much more to be done. The Reform Class of ‘93 has had a very positive and notable impact on Canada making it a better country but I know all Reformers will continue to spread our legacy in the years ahead. “The vehicle isn't important; the result is. The results are now achieved through the Conservative Government and through the members of the Conservative Party of Canada. Reformers should continue to be very proud of all of their hard work and achievements.”

Residents spirits soar because of bird man Submitted by Alice Cossey We have a bird man at Beaver Hill Lodge. Bill Kimbriel moved here from Mannville several months ago. He started feeding the seagulls. Each morning, early, and in the evening Bill can be seen feeding the birds. Sometimes there will be over 30 or more seagulls arrive. There are two crows that arrive to try and get a bite or two. It is so interesting to watch. One bird will come and have a look, then he will fly away, calling all of the rest. The pushing and fighting that goes on is something to see. The male seagulls are always the winners. The females are smaller, and get second choice. Lastly, the two crows clean up. For awhile Bill watered the flowers and rose that grow near the front of the ledge. Bill hurt his hand and had to give up that job. Bill worked on the oil rigs for many years. When he retired he volunteered at several places. He decided to move closer to his relatives. Bill has a grand daughter that works in Home Care here at the lodge. She would like everyone to know that her grandpa buys all his food for the birds. He gets it in huge bags. His granddaughter just wants people to know what a good, kind person her grandpa really is.

Lions Corn Roast supports food bank

Lamont’s “Bird Man”, Bill Kimbriel is seen each day at Beaver Hill lodge feeding the local seagulls.

The Lions Club of Lamont has decided to match its profit from the recent Corn Roast and donate the proceeds to the Lamont Food Bank. A check for the amount of $900.00 was presented to the Lamont Food Bank on behalf of the Lamont Lions Club . The corn roast, held September 28 was held in the parking lot outside the Lions Den and included a menu of corn on the cob (donated to the Lions Club by the Scotford Hutterite Colony) and a choice of two types of chili and a bun. Dessert included a choice of pumpkin or apple pie topped with ice cream or whipped cream. Patrons were very generous with their donations and local businesses including Home Hardware, Lamont Foods, the Flower Pot and Value Drug Mart supported the corn roast with cash donations. The Lamont Lions Club is very grateful for the support from residents and businesses as this support enables us to better the community.

People Growth before business growth One question always asked to local politicians when they are on the campaign trail is: What are you going to do to bring in business and make our area grow? Quite often the answer to this is that we need a committee put together to go after large industry that will employ people so that locals don't have to drive to Edmonton to work. Plus it will draw people from out of our area - to our town and area - to live. Another answer you might hear is: that we are going to bring in businesses, often even competing with the ones we already have. Competition is good. Or they might say that they will pinpoint what types of businesses we need and go after bringing them to our area. It's in interesting question, and these efforts by a village, town, county council, or economic development committee may often be justified. And they’re right, competition is good... if the population base can support the demand. However, I am of the believe that we have to flip this thinking upside down. In other words bring in the people and the businesses will take care of themselves. I say, give people a good reason to move here. Offer bargain land, inexpensive housing and tax incentives that would encourage population growth. When the population grows, business possibilities will grow too. Humans are an entrepreneurial lot. If there is a need, and a population base to make it plausible, someone will find a way to meet that need and business growth will begin to snowball along with the population. Kerry Anderson

Town of Bruderheim:Council Acclaimed! There is always the controversy when a Municipality has someone acclaimed to Council. It is a glass 1/2 full or a glass 1/2 empty type of disagreement, is the voter apathy so great that no one wants to run for Council, possibly believing that nothing ever changes? Thinking positively, I prefer to choose to believe, if the voters are satisfied with the current people of Council, as they are doing a good job of serving their community, then less folks are as motivated to serve on Council. I know for a fact, in

Bruderheim, I personally invited many folks to consider bringing their name forward on nomination day this year! We are very fortunate that in Bruderheim, there were three returning Council members & three new Council members, so we are able to maintain some continuity & at the same time bring three new perspectives to Council. This year the Town of Bruderheim has made some great strides forward, from Family Day, Canada Day, Smash'n Bash, AG Days, new School Playground, & much, much more. On the business side of

The Bruderheim School population is significantly up & EIPS is currently undergoing a review of the Bruderheim School district boundaries & the school of choice bussing. The future is looking very bright indeed for Bruderheim, there is a new year round the corner, bringing many new & exciting challenges. There is so much to be thankful for, the new apartment building in town has brought more

people to town, the second phase of the apartment complex is coming in soon. The new Town identity symbol, voted for by our citizens has the potential to create some real excitement about our Town, and in fact it has already brought a positive "buzz" about our community. So, as we look forward to the future of our town & Lamont County, it is difficult not to get excited as we "shoot for the stars", in the coming year. We are truly blessed. Thanks for your time. With the Canadian National Railway (CN) and Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) seemingly locked in a dispute, the industries that rely on the railway to ship products will once again be stuck with significantly fewer options if they go to a strike after the cooling off period. "One thing we just didn't need right now is for grain elevators that are already full, to not be

able to ship product out", says Bob Friesen, CEO of FNA Strategic Agriculture Institute (FNASTAG). "Farmers are ultimately the ones who suffer - they will have no choice but to hold their unsold inventory longer because elevators are full and unable to take delivery". The recent unexpectedly large harvest in much of western Canada is good news for farmers, but it is a huge concern

when that volume cannot be marketed in a timely manner, or at steady prices because of a dysfunctional transportation system. Already many elevators on the prairies, as well as farms, have resorted to piling grain on the ground, which causes quality loss the longer it sits. Now that grain may have to sit for longer. The inability for farmers to transport their goods to market causes back-

logs and further difficulty in an already stretched rail transportation system. And while farmers need access to markets to pay their bills, the buyers around the world start looking at other markets if delivery commitments default. Even a looming strike can cause buyers to look elsewhere. Canada's reputation is at stake if it can't deliver its market commitments. FNA-STAG is calling

on CN and the TCRC to avoid a strike situation and ensure that rail traffic moves smoothly and efficiently. "Farmers resent the fact that their potential income is being held ransom, and are counting on both sides in this dispute to work it out", says Friesen. If this situation is not resolved before a strike, FNA-STAG calls on the Federal Government to implement back to work legislation.

Enfield also showed off some of his impressive skills on the didgeriedoo.

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
