Health issue forces HRA principal into early retirement Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

Brian Dewar, principal at Holden Rural Academy, said a tearful goodbye to staff and students on Sept. 29 after recently announcing his retirement. Dewar, 75, said he was already planning for an eventual retirement; however, a health issue forced him to expedite his plans, putting Vice Principal, Brent Anderson, in place as the new principal.

“The plan was to get him (Anderson) worked up, and then I was going to step down, but then I had a little bit of a health problem, so we had to do it a little earlier,” said Dewar. “The blood pressure just got too high and so I have to de-stress. We're going to take it nice and easy now.”

Dewar said he was surprised by staff and students when they held a gathering for him in honour of his retirement on Sept. 29.

“I was in a meeting and all of

a sudden someone said ‘we need you in the gym, quickly!’,” he said. “So, I ran into the gym and saw everyone standing there and I knew I’d been had.”

Dewar said the gathering was emotional.

“It was really tough saying goodbye. These are great kids and I've watched them grow. In one year, they've grown to be young adults, that you can count on all the way across the line,” he said, adding the many messages he received from the students meant a lot to him.

“Here’s one, ‘I'm so sad to see you leave. I'm glad you were doing what you need to do and taking care of yourself.

Thank you for helping our school put our roots down and get started. You're such a wonderful person. I am so glad our paths have crossed, even though it's only for a short period of time. I will miss you a ton’. It’s just beautiful,” he said.

Although Dewar said he is leaving his position as princi-

pal at HRA he said he fully intends to be there for the school’s graduation ceremonies in June 2024.

“I’ll definitely be there for this grad. (These grade 12s are) my grade 11s from last year. We had three (students graduating) last year now we're looking at nine or 10 this year,” he said. “(This year we) doubled the enrollment (and) tripled the grad class. And next year, if it continues to do this, we’ll have 24 (students graduating). I love it.”

HRA Board member Karla Janzen, also the driving force behind the creation of HRA, said the popular outgoing principal will be missed.

“There were many tears at the final assembly to send off Mr. Dewar. He had a huge impact on our students. He inspired confidence; they knew that when he said they could do it, they really could. He will be dearly missed,” she said.

“Mr. Dewar caught the

vision of the board and set it in motion. He was 100 percent for the kids (and) put a lot of effort into mentoring and team building. He is passing the torch to a well-equipped team (and) the board has every confidence that Mr. Anderson has the skills and experience to

lead our school. Mr. Anderson is also 100 percent for the kids.”

Dewar was already a retired teacher/administrator when he became principal of Holden Rural Academy in Sept. 2022.

HRA is Alberta’s first rural charter high school, grades seven to 12.

Tofield cemetery drainage to be fixed before year’s end John Mather Staff Reporter

Tofield is hoping to have the flooding situation at Tofield Cemetery addressed before the end of fall.

Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Jeff Edwards told council, Sept.

25 he had talked to Alberta Transportation

about the issue.

“We had a meeting scheduled to take place during the Alberta Municipalities convention,” he said.

He added he had received detailed drawings from Alberta Transportation on what they would like to do to alleviate the drainage issues.

Edwards said those

had been forwarded to Tofield’s Director of Operations and engineers.

“Based on our review we’ve sent it back to Alberta Transportation with a few minor changes.

“There is a commitment from Alberta Transportation in having this rectified and having it rectified before the end of

the year.”

He said the department had heard Tofield’s concerns and were prepared to do something to fix them.

“They’ve come up with budget money from the province to have the work done in 2023,” he added.

Mayor Deb Dueck asked if the Town had

At the Sept. 25 regular council meeting Mayor Deb Dueck said she had received information and the organizers were hoping councillors could attend the event in a show of support.

The fair will run from 9 a.m to 3 p.m.

The fair will be attended by students from across Beaver County.

Dueck added councillors didn’t need to bring greetings but just walk around the exhibit and interact with the students and exhibitors.

Tofield School Bottle Fundraiser

TALKING TO ALBERTANS ABOUT NEW SOCIA SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM

Tofield School is arranging a fundraiser to help support our Athletics Program.

Throughout the 2023-2024 school year please drop off your recycled bottles in a labeled bag at the School’s main entrance.

Alberta’s government is beginning a transparent and collaborative process to engage Albertans and education partners to redraft kindergarten to Grade 6 (K-6) social studies curriculum.

Preferred drop off of recycles would be during school hours, however is not required.

Alberta Education will gather information about what Albertans would like students to learn in the social studies curriculum through a survey and discussion guide online, which will be available until Oct. 16.

Please contact the school if you would like to donate your recycles but are unable to drop them off.

Pick up methods will then be arranged.

Food banks to begin accepting donations for family pets

Tofield School cross country racers took part in their first race of the school year in Camrose on September 21st. The racers' practices paid off with all of them finishing the extremely hilly course. The Tofield Ryley and area Food Bank, which has been helping feed hungry locals for the past 28 years, will soon begin also accepting donations of dog and cat food, in addition to gently used accessories such as leashes, collars and animal beds.

Board chair Dawn Arnold said the move has been needed for a long time in order to fully help food bank recipients.

“For a lot of people, their animals are their family,” she said. “There are many who would feed their animal before they would feed themselves.” Arnold recalled a former client who always picked up his food hamper alone with only his little dog beside him.

To help the man, Arnold said she and some of the other volunteers at the food bank pooled their personal money to buy the man a big bag of dog food. She said one day, the man stopped coming for his hamper and Arnold found out later the man passed away.

“Someone took his dog (after he passed away), which was good,” she said. “That dog was his life.”

Arnold said the expe-

rience stuck with her until she attended a Food Bank conference last month in Lloydminster where a Saskatchewan SPCA speaker helped turn her thoughts into action. “(The SPCA speaker at the) conference (said) he partners with 13 different food banks in SK. (to supply animal food).

It’s only been going for a year but he told us some sad stories (that inspired him). He spoke about a man in Montreal whose dog froze to death one night because none of the animal shelters would take him with his dog,” she said. “At that time (they) didn't allow animals in the homeless shelters and the man would not go into the shelter without his dog. So, he stayed outside cuddling his dog the whole night, but the dog froze to death.

It really tugged at all of our heartstrings and we talked about it on the way home and said, ‘ok, what are we going to do?’.”

After speaking with her other board members, a decision was made to apply for a grant that would fund a shed to be built alongside the Tofield food bank to house donated dog and cat food

and accessories. “(Being with their animals) is where their time is spent. If we weren’t supplying them (with dog or cat food) they would probably be using (donated) canned meat and things (meant for themselves),” said Arnold.

Arnold said she is hoping to hear back from her grant application in the next week or so and have the shed built and ready for donations by the end of Oct.

JOHN’S RANT Justin, you shouldn’t apologize for me when you screw up Well a week has passed since the Liberals invited Waffen SS soldier Yaroslav Hunka to attend the speech by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

And the fallout from that Hunka, Hunka Burning Love affair hasn’t slowed down.

House Speaker Anthony Rota, who took the sole blame for the invite to Hunka, did the honourable thing, albeit three days after the event, and hurled himself on his sword and resigned as Speaker.

But where was the Prime Minister for three days, dodging question period, holing up in his cottage?

Finally, he did admit it was an embarrassing situation.

“This was a mistake that has deeply embarrassed Parliament and Canada. All of us who were in this House on Friday regret deeply having stood and clapped even though we did so, unaware of the context,” Trudeau said.

He called the incident a "horrendous violation" of the memory of the millions of people who died in the Holocaust and said it was "deeply, deeply painful" for Jewish people, as well as members of the Polish, Roma, and LGBTQ2S+ communities who were also “targeted by the Nazi genocide.”

“I also want to reiterate how deeply sorry Canada is for the situation this put President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian delegation in,” he added Well stop right there, Justin.

Don’t paint all Canadians

with this brush. I know for certain, I had nothing to do with the invite, nor did my neighbours.

My friend who spent several years serving Canada in the military at bases in Europe when he was much younger, didn’t handle the invite, the vetting, or the standing applause awarded to Hunka.

Why should we be apologizing?

This is solely your mess and the mess of those in Parliament who apparently don’t know their history.

And then there is your Burlington MP Karina Gould, Oxford University grad who also attended McGill University, who wanted the entire episode purged from Hansard, the record book of the House of Commons, which preserves the history of happenings in Parliament.

Fortunately, that bird wouldn’t fly and it was quickly shot down.

But what was she thinking to suggest it.

Joining with the woke mob to try and cancel history, especially when it shows the Liberals in such an embarrassing light.

Now, way back when, when I went to school we were taught the basics of readings, writing and arithmetic.

There wasn’t much gender identity on our school agendas.

But we did have to study history, and we learned about World War II. Way back then Canada,

joined with England, France, and the United States to fight the German-Japanese axis. The Germans were the Nazis led by Adolph Hitler.

Oh, and there were some Russians that fought alongside the Allies as we were called.

They, at that time, were on our side.

Everyone was taught that.

It wasn’t a hard concept to grasp, even though the Russians later would become our enemy as they carved up the defeated Germany and East European countries at the start of the cold way.

So when speaker Rota addressed Parliament and introduced his guest Hunka he said, “We have in the chamber today, Ukrainian war veteran from the Second World War who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians and continues to support the troops today even at his age of

“He is a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero, and we thank him for all his service.”

So wouldn’t mentioning he fought against the Russians have triggered some questions from at least one or two MPs? There are some highly educated Members of Parliament and surely one of those esteemed members must have tweaked to this.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland is of Ukrainian descent and has worked and studied in that country.

Harvard educated, her biography states she studied Russian history and literature on her way to a Masters degree.

Surely Rota’s introduction should have triggered her.

But no, there she was smiling proudly and bobbing her head like one of those doggie puppets people used to put on the back shelves of their cars, as the

introduction was made.

Were the MPs just all caught up in the moment? Who knows.

But it was embarrassing.

Russian president Vladimir Putin quickly had his PR machine pointing this out, indicating it supported his given reason for invading Ukraine.

The apology should have been made by the Prime Minister within hours of the news being first reported.

We know he is very good at apologizing. But, he waited several days as the controversy festered.

Another sign of his poor leadership.

I’m ashamed of our country.

But, Justin, when you apologize speak for yourself and the Parliament. Don’t speak for me, and my neighbours who had nothing to do with this fiasco!

LOOSE ENDS Bad writing

I’m not sure what time I went to bed that night. I have gotten into the habit of staying up after mid-

night most nights – why?

Because I’m a dummy.

There’s nothing worth watching on TV at that time of night, unless I want to start a movie that will either keep me awake until two or send me off to dreamland half way through.

But as a guess, I probably headed to bed somewhere between 11:11 and 12:12. I do remember when I first woke up – it was 1:11. I can be that accurate because my bed-

side clock is a digital but the why was a puzzle. I wasn’t answering a call of nature, nor were there any flashes of bright light followed by rolling thunder or rain hammering the rooftop.

I went back to sleep, but not for long. I was awake at 2:22. And 3:33. Well, isn’t that cute, I thought.

All those triple numbers.

Maybe the cosmos was sending me a message – Buy a lottery ticket!

Somehow I slept

through 4:44 but sure enough, the next time I squinted at the read-out the numbers were 5:55 and I no longer thought it was cute. It was annoying.

Maybe my clock was getting too old to tell time correctly and the triple numbers weren’t the real time. Maybe it was upset with my never using the alarm – I can’t recall the last time I needed or wanted to be awakened by an alarm – and bored with just sitting there tick-

ing over the seconds, minutes and hours, day after day.

Hey! Wake up! I can do more than tell time! What about my radio option; why don’t you ever tune in some tunes, or listen to the news? Well, to start, I have a radio in the living room that I have on until evening when I watch TV. And why would I do either of those things when I’m supposed to be sleeping?

Okay, you’ve likely real-

ized by now that the only part of this tale that actually happened was me waking up one night at 1:11. But all I thought was drat! I just barely got to sleep. The rest is all nonsense, written because my bag of column ideas is empty! It isn’t even writing. It’s shameful gibberish!

But please don’t cross me off your reading list.

I’ll promise to do better; Lord knows I sure can’t do any worse.

Sunshine Villa hosts annual pie social, largest turnout yet Kari Janzen Staff Reporter

The Sunshine Villa held their annual pie social and silent auction on Saturday, September 30. Over 150 people came out to support the Villa’s Resident’s Association recreation and social activities fund.

“It was our biggest attendance to date,” said Villa manager Lorna Rempel.

Sunshine Villa kitchen staff made all of the pie, baking 24 pies of seven different kinds in the days before the social.

“The kitchen staff here actually baked the pies. They are very busy ladies. The Villa donated the supplies for the pies and the money raised goes to the Resident's Association,” said Villa activity coordinator Janis Coombs.

The Villa residents have an Association meeting once a month and put the money towards various activities.

“It contributes to their activities or health and wellness, things like that.

They pull from those funds to enhance their activities. When something comes up, perhaps there's an event that they want to attend, then they can bring it into the meeting and they can (use the funds that have been raised). They will discuss and decide where they allocate

their money throughout the year,” said Coombs.

“Some of that they allocate to me, to plan (events and activities) for them,” she said.

“The funds are used in a general revenue, and those revenues are used to reimburse musicians who come and play for us, and field trips when we have to rent the bus, and those are essentially the two main functions that we do,” said Resident’s Association president Doug Bohush.

“Last year we raised about $2,700. We had bills to pay, and it brought the total down to about $2,500 net and then we were very fortunate that Busy B gave us a $1,000 grant, that coincided with our function, and it brought our total up to over $3,000,” he said.

Local businesses and residents from Tofield and the surrounding areas donated many auction items ranging from gift certificates, housewares, quilts, candles, candy, garden decor and more.

There was an incentive to bid quickly, as items marked by various colours were removed from the tables every 15 minutes. Bidders remained anonymous, as each person was registered with a pie-themed name.

September 26, brought the annual Terry Fox Run/Walk for Tofield and CW Sears School students. In the past, the Tofield School students ran separately from the younger, CW Sears students, however this was a fantastic opportunity for them to come together and enjoy this event.

Even though some of the older students didn’t

care to keep track of how many laps they went around the schoolyard, some of them did; Mrs. Netik’s grade 6 class for example. They wanted to keep track and have stamp cards to see how many laps they could run, so Mrs. Netik, being the generous teacher that she is, stayed in one spot to stamp her students’ cards every time they went past her.

Admin along with other teachers—elemen-

tary, junior and senior high—participated in the event as well, getting the students motivated to try and pass them and beat them in how many laps they each did.

Each class tried their best to bring a Toonie for Terry and whichever class raises the most, wins a pizza party. Other prizes include becoming the principal for the morning and parking in the admin parking space.

A large group of students gathered on Sept. 26 for the Terry Fox Run as Tofield School joined forces with CW Sears to honour the great Canadian and raise funds for cancer research.

Wilderness based drug recovery program reopens for males 18-24 A new addiction and mental health treatment program has reopened at Rocky Mountain House over the weekend, called the Shunda Creek Recovery Centre.

The Centre is operated by Enviros but under contract to Alberta Health Services.

It runs a 12-week wilderness-based addiction and mental health recovery program for males ages 18-24. Enviro says to potential clients, “You’ll be with others your own age who are walking in similar shoes to yours.”

The Centre was relocated late last year, and has reopened in a new, larger facility, with capacity for 18 clients.

“Our government is proud to invest in a system centred around recovery, offering hope for those suffering from the deadly disease of addiction. I am pleased to see this unique and valuable recovery opportunity guiding more individuals down the path of recovery,” says Dan Williams, Minister of Mental Health and Addiction.

“The expansion of the Shunda Creek Recovery Centre will go a long way providing even more addiction and mental health treatment in a fun environment outdoors,” adds Jason Nixon, MLA, Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre and Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services. “I look forward to seeing the positive difference this program will make in the lives of young men in Rocky Mountain House and across the province.”

Funded by AHS and Alberta Mental Health and Addition, the program has been providing intensive adventure-based wilderness programming for young men since 2009, helping address substance and mental health issues that require live-in treatment and support.

Just last June, the program was in danger of shutting down due to funding challenges.

In July, Enviros was able to secure funds to purchase the new facility, which still required renovations. Also some former clients were so grateful to the program for changing their lives, they independently started a GoFundMe to help out.

“We are absolutely thrilled that we’ve been able to not only relocate but that we’ve been able to expand our capacity to continue providing this invaluable program,” says Enviros CEO Hazel Bergen.

“We are grateful for the support of AHS, the provincial government, and our alumni, staff and supporters who believe so strongly in this program.”

Individuals in the program participate in outdoor activities, such as canoeing, hiking, rock climbing and camping trips, which supplement individualized treatment plans that can include stabilization programs, as well as one-on-one and group therapies.

“Shunda Creek provides a unique treatment approach for young Alberta men,” says Kerry Bales, Senior Program Officer with AHS Addiction and Mental Health.

“The program has proven successful, and we’re pleased to continue partnering with Enviros to support individuals with substance use disorder in their recovery journey.”

Upon completion of the program, participants can access the Shunda Creek Alumni aftercare program in which they have opportunities to talk online and in-person with peers who have shared experiences.

“Guys are facing what feels like the end of the road when they get here,” says Robert Long, a Shunda Creek alumnus who takes part in the aftercare program after completing his own recovery journey.

“Everyone goes through recovery differently and we

need programs that meet people where they’re at. Having a program like this that’s based in the wilderness helps in ways a city program can’t.

“What has been built out here is helping to push the field of adventure therapy forward and we help guys work through this disease that puts them into the depths of despair and isolation.”

Founded in 1976, Enviros has grown from a single wilderness program to an agency with 13 programs in the areas of addiction recovery, homelessness prevention, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) assessments, youth justice, group homes, foster care, respite care, and supports for youth who are transitioning out of the system.

“Enviros’ mission is to partner with young people and families to take charge of their lives and actively choose the direction it takes.”

Drug use in Alberta has more than doubled in the past six years, according to the Alberta substance use surveillance system. In Central Alberta, those numbers have gone from 438 to 3,143, with a high of 4,809 in 2022.

2023 has seen the highest start of any year of drug poisoning deaths, with April being the deadliest month, at 76 deaths.

Nearly 70 per cent of drug poisoning deaths happen to men.

Fentanyl was involved in 93 per cent of all drug-related deaths, with Methamphetamine at 55 per cent, and Carfentanil at 40 per cent. Cocaine and Alcohol are the next highest causes of death, at 23 per cent and 16 per cent respectively.

County receives complaint of excessive fireworks and firearms activity in west end Patricia Harcourt Beaver County received a complaint of excessive noise and disruptions due to the inordinate use of firearms and fireworks in the west end.

The complaint went to the county’s Governance and Priorities Committee (GPC) at its Sept. 20 meeting.

At that meeting, a motion was made by Kevin Smook giving direction to administration, which stated: “Moved by Committee Member Smook that administration provide historical information regarding implementation of a firearms bylaw in the County.”

Smook along with all the other Beaver County councillors make up the committee members for the GPC, which discusses issues and provides direction to county council.

The direction given that more information on the history of firearms in the county is the result of a letter from county resident Rhona Lawson.

Lawson asked for help for “myself and a lot of the people living in the west end of Beaver County,” regarding issues over firearms and fireworks.

“I am faced with excessive, loud, unexpected, random and possibly dangerous occurrences of fireworks and gunfire,” she writes in her letter.

“But when I call the RCMP, there is nothing they can do,” she said, calling it a “low priority” for the RCMP who “can do nothing if there is no bylaw in place.”

She added: “When I spoke with the RCMP members, he was quite frustrated by the number of calls they get about firearms that they can do nothing about. It was by his recommendation that I contacted you.”

She said nobody really knows what the law is but adds she was told after complaining that “the county does not regulate the use of firearms.

“I know the county does not regulate the use of firearms but they could,” said Lawson. “The issue I am having is not with hunters but with people using their property as a recreational gun club.

“Two problems with this,” she said. “One, I have to listen to a war zone for hours on end and two, they are far too close to my fences and therefore my livestock.”

She said regulation of fireworks also does not appear to be implemented in the county, stating: “There is a lot of entitled behaviour and not much courtesy.”

Fireworks have been set off so close to her yard, she said, that her horses were affected. She counted six set of fireworks set off separately during New Year’s.

“I have livestock that is at risk, I am concerned for my safety, and I feel limited to the times I can be outside on my own property and I listen to hours of repeated shots from rifles and repeater rifles,” she said, adding: “I am wondering what can be done to improve these real issues?”

The GPC is waiting on the historical perspective to the firearms issue in the county. A previous administration had held a public hearing on a proposed firearms bylaw but no new rules were implemented at that time after receiving opposition to the idea from gun owners.

County personnel busy with ministerial meetings last week Patricia Harcourt Beaver County officials spent a busy week in ministerial meetings discussing topics of importance to rural residents.

Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1) and Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3), along with councillors Lionel William (Division 2), Barry Bruce (Division 4) and Dale Pederson (Division 5) met throughout the week with Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely, and the ministries of agriculture, seniors housing and public safety, as well as health care.

“Beaver County’s approach with the government was working together with solution based issues,” explained Hrabec later.

This approach involved first identifying the problem before offering suggestions for solutions.

County Council’s main topics for discussion involved the need for secure funding from the province, as well as increased funding for

rural Alberta in areas that need a bigger commitment from the government.

The county later reported that, all the meetings with the ministers resulted in a general consensus regarding the importance of addressing the needs for mental health and addictions care.

Other key topics that were discussed included commitments for continued financial programs for the rural agricultural service boards in the province, agricultural societies and extension programs.

It was noted that the county is also a strong supporter of local Family and Community Support Services programs in Viking and Tofield, and the Battle River Research Group and its work.

Hrabec reported that as the chair of the Ag Service Board for Beaver County, he attended the agriculture minister’s meeting virtually from the cab of his combine while harvesting.

As chair of the Beaver Foundation, Hrabec also reported that discussions with the seniors ministry included procurement and local contractors, and the need for supports for seniors in facilities as well as through the work of the local FCSS. “Seniors in Beaver County helped build this wonderful province and we need to continue to provide support and solutions for all the municipalities within our boundaries,” stated Hrabec.

“We looked at positive solutions for all of our housing within the county.”

The county also called for funding needed for training in emergency services and disaster planning during public safety discussions. Hrabec said there was a “great discussion about Victim Services and the importance of the work they do in Beaver County.”

Victim Services in Beaver County has provided a “Cadillac service,”

he said, noting that is not the case for all VS services in the province.

The province is in currently in the process of rearranging the way this service will be delivered in the future.

“Strong conversation between both sides identified some positive outcomes that will come out of the ministry,” he said. “Rural crime was another discussion with some positives identified by council that the Viking detachment is getting a new sergeant position and there will be more boots on the ground for provincial police funding.”

Another discussion with MLA Martin Long, Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Health, concerned the need to re-open the Tofield Health Centre’s emergency services department, as well as the potential for expanding surgeries into rural hospitals. Also discussed was a need for more doctors, nurses and support staff as being critical for rural health services.

Dozens come out for senior’s club monthly lunch event

People of all ages gathered at the Tofield Golden Senior’s club Sept. 29 for their monthly lunch event which included a hamburger meal complete with different salads and desserts for $10.

Treasurer Jim Robichaud said the club accommodated at least 65 people to the lunch and guests were still coming through the door when the event was nearly over.

“The lunch went very well. Every time we have a function, we

seem to get a lot of response,” he said adding that the club’s membership has multiplied five times what it was eight months ago.

“Eight months ago, we were at 20 members and now we are at almost 100,” he said.

“But we (dropped) because of COVID and were probably at 80 members before that.”

Robichaud said the club is essential to the community because it provides an outlet for seniors who may not have opportunities to socialize otherwise.

He said events such as the monthly lunches

help fund programs and field trips.

“It allows us to put programs into place that otherwise we couldn’t such as field trips like going out to see the Hutterites, or the Muttart Conservatory,” he said.

“We’re also going to a nostalgic diner in the city where they have cars and motorcycles from long ago with a menu and décor (to match).”

Margaret "Peggy" Lynn Marchand of Onoway, Alberta, passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at the age of 69 years. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Nalbert Marchand of Onoway; children Curtis Bowen of Grande Cache, Scott Bowen (Leanne Jones-Bowen) of Edmonton, Randi Marchand of Edmonton, and Gord (Monica) Marchand of Edmonton; six grandchildren; and siblings Doreen (John) Marcisyn of Hinton and Bev (Ivan) Hollenbeck of Onoway.

Peggy was predeceased by her parents Raymond Thor Ovelson and Esther Synnove; and brothers Dennis Ovelson and Leonard Ovelson.

An Inurnment will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, October 14, 2023 in the Kingman Cemetery. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 14, 2023 from the Burgar Memorial Chapel, 4817 - 51 Avenue Camrose officiated by Rev. Brian Hunter.

Strathcona RCMP and Explosive Device Unit respond to found grenade On Sept 25, at 6 p.m., Strathcona County RCMP were called to a residence in the Glen Allan area for a possible explosive device.

While cleaning out a room in the residence, the homeowner located a suspicious device. Police quickly secured the area and found what appeared to be a grenade.

Members consulted with the RCMP Explosive Device Unit (EDU), who advised they would attend the location.

The device was examined and was confirmed inoperable. EDU will consult with the military for additional testing.

RCMP were on scene

until approximately 9:45 p.m., to ensure the safety of the residence, its occupants and surrounding neighbours.

It can be difficult to determine if something is real or not by looking at it. People need to exercise caution when dealing with explosive devices and should contact police immediately.

CN preaches being ‘rail smart’ during Rail Safety Week Kari Janzen Staff Reporter

The 20th annual Rail Safety Week was held Sept.

18-24 this year, to raise awareness and share tips on being rail smart. “It’s a partnership between the railways and Operation Lifesaver Canada. The messaging has been there for 20 years and it's as relevant today as it was when Rail Safety Week started,” said Brian Jones, an inspector with the Canadian National Railway (CN) police service.

“The main purpose of Rail Safety Week is to save lives and prevent serious injury. It is that simple.

That's our goal year round, but Rail Safety Week is just an opportunity to really focus that discussion and try to put that messaging in front of as many people as we can,” he said.

Railway safety is an important aspect for everybody, especially those who live where the rail lines are often busy and are part of many people’s everyday lives.

“Your readers in Tofield have first hand experience, every day, with the railway

and it's critically important that they are safe at crossings and that they're not engaging in illegal activity by trespassing across the tracks,” he said.

“If you are on CN property, if you're riding your bike, if you're riding your quad, and as we get into winter, if you're riding your snowmobile, (even) if you're walking your dog and you look down and there's gravel under your feet or railroad ties, what you're doing is illegal. And it's primarily illegal because it's inherently unsafe,” said Jones.

There are some misconceptions when it comes to a train’s speed and its ability to slow down.

“It happened just as recently as last week; one of our officers talked to a commercial driver, and they (had) misjudged the speed of the train. They're so big and they look like they're so far away and moving much slower than they are, and nothing could be further from the truth. Trains move at highspeed on our rail lines, and they cover a distance in a really quick period of time.

consequences could be deadly,” Jones said.

The speeds of trains on the line are regulated and do vary, but they can be traveling anywhere from 40-60 miles per hour (approx. 65-95 kilometres per hour), Jones said.

Jones says one piece of advice that he stresses is to obey the crossing signals.

“If you're in a vehicle, recognize where you are and obey the crossing sig-

nals, understand what they mean and obey the crossing signals at all railway crossings. Any impact between a vehicle and a train, the train is always going to win.

“People oftentimes think of the vehicle being on the crossing and being struck by the train, but we also have issues and challenges with people not stopping in time or not being aware enough and driving into

the side of trains. Each one of those (occurrences) is dangerous and each one of them, the outcome potentially could be tragic,” Jones said.

Another factor that people may not realize is the profound difference in weight ratio between vehicles and trains.

“It's a simple matter of physics. A train hitting a vehicle is like a vehicle hitting a pop can. Because of

that weight and speed, stopping distances are significant. The train can't swerve, the train can’t steer around, and if it's operating at track speed, it can take upwards of two miles to stop,” he said.

Jones also highlighted the fact that there is an emergency phone number posted at every rail crossing.

Tofield Jr. High girls volleyball team earns silver

Tofield Jr. High School girls volleyball team won against Viking on Sept. 20, then took part in a tourney in Bawlf Sept. 22-23 where they took home silver. Grade 9 Eve Busenius was the queen of the court winning the second set vs Bawlf serving up a 25-0 win. On Sept. 28 the girls took a road trip to Sedgewick and won both sets.

Ryley Mosaic Man returns to rightful place Kari Janzen Staff Reporter

Ryley's mosaic mural, created in celebration of Canada's 150th birthday in 2017, was recently returned to its former glory.

"We are unsure exactly why it was ever taken down. It had a few tiles that had fallen off previously and we repaired those. After I returned on September 1st, I directed the staff to return the Mosaic," said Ryley CAO, Glen Hamilton-Brown.

The mosaic is displayed on main street between the grocery store and the ATB building. It was put together as part of Canada Mosaic Murals initiative in 2017, and is the only mural to have been designed and created by a village in Canada.

"The current Village Council and staff feel that the Ryley Mosaic Man, with its tiles painted by members of our community, is an important part of the identity of Ryley. People come to Ryley and take photos of themselves standing beside the Mosaic in the same way that people seek out Vegreville's Pysanka or other municipal symbolic structures," Hamilton-Brown said.

On the mosaic individual tiles can be identified as the school’s Ryley Rebels’ ‘R,’ the symbol for recreational swimming, and the Beaver County logo,

Throughout Canada, 150 murals were completed, with the goal of “illustrating Canada’s cultural and geographical diversity,” the Canada Mosaic Murals website says.

If ever all 150 murals were joined together, it would form one ginormous mural, stretching over 360 metres wide (four football fields) by 2.5 metres (8 feet) high.

“Upon the completion of the entire Canada Mosaic Mural, each community mural will reside in the town or city where it was created as a legacy of your community and its connection to the communities across Canada,” the website says.

Eighteen murals were constructed in the province of Alberta, those nearest to Ryley include Strathcona County, Camrose, Vegreville, and Edmonton. Each mural depicts an image that is an overall representation of the community, in a train car.

“Each community mural virtually connects to other community murals resulting in a massive coast to coast unified mosaic (comprising) an overall image of train cars connecting Canadians from far and wide!” the website said.

There is also a Pledge and Play quiz on the CN website (cn.ca) where people can take the quiz to test their knowledge of rail safety, and make a personal pledge to be rail smart.

“It's a really good refresher for those of us that are out there driving and it's fun. It challenges some misconceptions that we might have about how to operate safely around the rail. I really like the pledge, because it's an individual commitment to being safe, and not just to be safe but if you see something unsafe, to call and help protect someone that's making a bad decision on or around the tracks,” Jones said.
