The biggest event of the year is about to descend upon the Village of Andrew. Carri Hrehorets, President of the Andrew & District Agricultural Society, says they are all set for the 19th annual Garlic Festival this Saturday, and is excited about this year’s line up of events and activities, which normally attracts more than 1,500 people. “There’s something for everyone,” says Hrehorets. “Everybody who is attending should take their time and stroll through the farmer’s market….Families should take in some of the outdoor activities for the kids and hopefully everyone will stop in the main hall and enjoy some of the entertainers. Sit down, grab a bite and beverage and enjoy.” This year organizers have hired more professional entertainers, and Hrehorets is looking forward to seeing SAFIRE the fire dance performer and Nikolai the juggler and stage performer. “In addition, we will have horse drawn wagon rides, a petting zoo, and more activities for the kids. I just hope the weather cooperates. In addition, we have 70 vendors in the farmer’s market.” The family atmosphere and wide array of events is a great way to spend the day, and she is hoping for a great turnout.
The ag. society has operated the garlic festival for the past eight years in conjunction with the Andrew Community Centre Association. “We are a hard working, motivated group and the garlic festival grows and becomes more popular and well known from year to year. We have about 10-15 dedicated volunteers for the festival. In addition, we support other local groups. We allow clubs and some church groups to sell tickets to raise funds, we hire the figure skating club to work the main door and the fire department will be operating a concession. We want to see every club benefit from this event,” noted Hrehorets. The event will kick off at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at the Andrew Lions Club Den. A total of 70 vendors will be at the farmer’s market and craft show in the curling rink. The Bench Show is located in the hall and will feature baking, canning, fresh produce, crafts and photography. There is a concession, beer garden, at the hall as well. Over at the Rainbow Club there will be a perogy lunch. After that take in the parade on main street starting at 1 p.m. Entertainment will follow in the hall. There will also be car show, guestspeaker on garlic at 2 p.m. upstairs, and a scarecrow contest in the mix. The list is extensive, so make sure you block off enough time on your schedule, you won’t be disappointed.
