Towns busy with Ry-Tof slo-pitch players

BY KARI JANZEN The Ryley and Tofield sports grounds were filled to overflowing, as people from all over came to play Slo-Pitch for the Ry-Tof Tournament. Campers and

tents were set up everywhere, filling the grounds with people.

Over 80 teams came out for the long weekend, for the 27th annual tournament. Among the many teams, the

Home Time Hooligans, the Screamin’ Seagulls, Tofield Towing, Bad News Beers, and BBoBC were from Tofield and Ryley.

during the tournament in Tofield, and the kids were happily playing in the spray park and on the pumptrack all weekend long. The weather was pleasant enough for the three day event, despite the heavy smoke that lingered in the air.

All the diamonds in both towns were being used, including the four that both sports grounds have, plus a Lindbrook diamond, a Tofield School diamond, and two diamonds at the Ryley School.

There were dances on Friday and Saturday evenings, in Tofield and Ryley respectively, with Crazy Darrell’s Entertainment as the DJ. The round robin games were played Saturday and Sunday, with the finals played on Monday.

“So many of the teams, they just like the tournament,” main event organizer Vanita Eglauer said.

“It's one of the later ones in the season and sometimes, for some of the teams, it's the last tournament that they're going to participate in. We get club teams that come out here, we get just friends who play slo-pitch coming together and it's a fun final weekend for everybody to get together before fall takes hold of us all.”

The Scrubs were declared the tournament Champions, as the winners of the A Division. The B winner was Mixed Veggies, C winner the Buckaroos, D winner the Designated Drinkers, E winner the Kronik team, F winner the Brew Crew, G winner the Blues, H winner the Armed and Hammered team, I winner the Tailgaters, and J winner the Snack Pack team.

Kids return to school for brand new academic year Kari Janzen Staff Reporter

Kids in the Battle River School Division returned to classes on Tuesday, Sept. 5 following the long weekend.

Tofield School principal Zenovia Lazaruik says this time of year is always exciting for her.

“This time of year for me is always exciting because of the new beginning of the school year and to see the return of students and meeting new students and their families.

We also have eight new staff members who bring to Tofield School strong relationship building and academic excellence,” she said.

CW Sears is also welcoming new staff.

“Our new teachers are Mrs. Gillespie in Pre-Kindergarten, Mrs. Livingstone in Grade 2, and Mrs. Schaade in Grade 4.

We also have a few new Educational Assistants joining our

staff: Ms. Muller, Mrs. Hannaford, Ms. Alba, Ms. Bell and Mrs. Ramona Woodruff are all joining our staff as Educational Assistants,” said CW Sears principal Adam Madsen.

“Our School will also be hosting a Meet the Teacher/Welcome event this year which will take place later in September,” he said.

New to Tofield School this year is additional options classes.

“This year we are offering in high school Financial Management which provides learning around budgeting, loans, credit cards, savings, etc., and we are also offering introductory level photography.

“Northstar has moved into the Tofield School so that we can support more students with flexibility in their schedules,” said Lazaruik.

CW Sears is introducing new curriculum to several grades.

“We will be implementing the new Alberta Curriculum in Math and English Language Arts and Literature for Grade 4 and Science for Grades 1 to 3,” Madsen said.

Tofield School has seen additional registrations for this new school year, as well as some international students.

“We have had a number of new registrations this week and have four international students from Chile, Belgium and Japan, which has increased our school enrollment again this year.

“We will have over 500 students this school year. We are a growing and thriving school community,” Lazaruik said.

Lazaruik will be starting her second year at Tofield School, and is continuing to look forward to her role as the principal.

“I am looking forward to the continuation of building a positive learning environment

for all students and enjoying the many events that will be held throughout the school year,” she said.

A message of encouragement that Mrs. Lazaruik would like to share with her students this year is: “At Tofield School all students belong and are accepted. All staff are committed to supporting all students in their daily needs. Every Student, Every

Mr. Madsen says he encourages his students to make W.I.S.E choices.

Holden Museum fires up piche oven at season closing event Kari Janzen Staff Reporter

The Holden Museum held its season closing on Saturday, Sept. 2 and fired up the old piche oven to bake some buns.

Starting the whole process at 10am, the oven got up to a temperature of 450°F and the buns that were checked on in five minute increments baked for a total of approximately 20 minutes.

Dave Maruszeczka, Holden Historical Society President, and his assistant Kristine Winter worked together to bake the buns for those in attendance.

“At this point, we're making a good guess that it is probably ready. Our hope is that we'll see the inside of here somewhere in the neighbourhood of 500 degrees or above 400 for sure,” said Maruszeczka.

First the ashes from the burnt logs were pulled out, to clean the oven out and make room for the trays.

“And then once that's done, I'm going to put this thermometer in there for a short time, and then we're going to close it up. Two things are going to happen here: we're able to get an idea of the temperature, and by closing it up like that, it's going to try to even out the heat in the oven because right now there's flames in certain places and there isn’t.

“Then we wait. The length of time we're probably going to wait is somewhat dependent on the temperature, and it’s a guess. So probably along the way, we're going to just crack that open a bit just to see how they're doing,” said Maruszeczka.

Butter and jam were available to accompany the freshly baked buns.

The piche oven was in Smoky Lake, then Cooking Lake, before arriving at its current home in Holden.

As stated in the description on the Village of Holden’s website, since 1991, the Museum has been on the main floor of the current building, which was built in 1911. Managed by the Holden Historical Society, the museum is open during the summer on the weekends, Fri-Sun from 12pm - 4pm, but can be opened anytime by appointment, including the off season. Included in the museum is a pioneer kitchen, the outdoor piche oven, a general store, a church, a schoolroom, a barbershop, and a jail. The building itself was originally used as the town hall, the fire hall, and the jail on the main floor.

In its youth, the upper floor of the building was used as a community and dance hall and was later used as a location to play silent movies. In 1935 the building was given by the Village to the Masons, which is still in use today.

I’d never make this list

Michelle Obama has been voted the most inspirational woman of all time, at the top of a list of thirty. I think she deserves to be number one; the ex-US First Lady is a

lawyer, author and education campaigner and I find her full of grace, even when asked stupid questions by talk show hosts who should know better.

She doesn’t fluster easily and never comes off as false. She beat out Emma Watson, the British actress from the Harry Potter movies and women’s rights campaigner, and double Nobel Prize winning scientist, Marie Curie, numbers two and three respectively.

The list was created when researchers polled 2000 parents of girls between the ages of six and ten to discover women whose deeds have been most inspirational.

When asked what makes an inspirational woman, 65 per cent of those surveyed said determination; passion also rated high.

Over 60 per cent of the parents said their girl needs resilience to succeed in life. Having read those figures I’m left wondering if it was the

girls or their parents – probably mothers, given the topic – who did the voting. Also there are names that make me wonder if many 6-yearolds have even heard of them. If I’m dumbing down the future women who will rule the world, I apologize.

Anyway, here are a few of the other women in the top 30. Taylor Swift is number six, snugged in between Florence Nightingale and Rosa Parks. Taylor is a popular musician and

what is called an influencer – even an old fogey like me knows who this tall blonde with legs that seem to go on forever is - and with preteens doing the voting I’d expect her to be higher on the list. But again, that’s just me. Beyoncé –I know her by name but couldn’t pick her out of a photo array – is between Rosa Parks and Mother Teresa.

Oprah beat out author Jane Austen and pilot Amelia Earhart and almost everyone won

more votes than Superior Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

I confess to not recognizing a bunch of names because they belong to female athletes. I don’t follow female footballers; put them in the CFL and I’ll happily join their fan clubs. Is that a sexist remark? Sorry. I’ll try to do better. Obviously I’ll never make any list of role models for young women. (Parents worldwide should do a little happy dance here.)

RCMP Report Tuesday rollover results in loss of several hundred chickens Between August 15 and August 31 inclusive, the Tofield RCMP received 96 calls for service. Tofield RCMP recommend the public report any suspicious behaviour immediately to assist police in a timely response. This timely response assists in the apprehension of property crime offenders.

Some notable incidents are: August 16, Tofield RCMP conducted patrols in the Ryley area and located a stolen F150 parked in a field.

Vehicle was towed and the registered owner was notified. The matter is still under investigation.

August 22, Tofield RCMP were notified of the location of a stolen

vehicle parked on the side of the road in Tofield. Tofield RCMP attended and located a male asleep in the vehicle. The male was identified as 37 year old Alexander Valentine.

Alexander Valentine was charged with one count of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5000 and is scheduled to appear in court.

August 22, Tofield RCMP responded to a complaint of a break and enter to a residence in the town of Ryley.

The victim reported damage to the residence and outbuildings. The matter is still under investigation.

August 23, Tofield RCMP were notified of a vehicle theft in the Ryley area. Patrols were

conducted but the vehicle was not immediately located. Several days later the vehicle was recovered. The matter is still under investigation.

August 23, Tofield RCMP received several 911 complaints regarding serious incidents.

An investigation revealed these 911 calls to be fabricated and false.

Police identified the individual making the calls as 35 year old Dustin Gilmore. Dustin Gilmore was charged

with one count of Public Mischief for the misuse of the 911 system.

August 25, Tofield RCMP attempted a vehicle stop while on the scene of recovering a stolen vehicle. The suspect vehicle then fled police. The driver of the fleeing vehicle was identified as Scott Pollom (37).

Scott Pollom was charged with operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by a Peace Officer, operating a motor vehicle while

prohibited and several other traffic infractions.

August 29, Tofield RCMP received a complaint that a callers vehicle was stolen over night in the Tofield area.

The matter is still under investigation.

In the early morning hours of September 5, Tofield RCMP responded to a semi truck roll over on Highway 14, one kilometer west of Holden. Initial investigation revealed a semi truck caught the edge of the road causing it to

The highway was reopened a short time later.

Slow summer prelude to full on fall fight It's just after the Labour Day weekend.

It’s called the dog days of summer so naturally, there's not a lot going on.

Both Provincial and Federal governments are off for the summer.

Our esteemed Federal Environment Minister is off in China.

What he’s doing? nobody seems to know, in fact, I’m totally surprised there's been no media coverage of just what Stephen Guilbeault is doing in China, but he did manage to do his best to further alienate Albertans.

Guilbeault wasn’t critical of China while he was in Beijing, perhaps because he was heeding the warnings issued to him ahead of time.

An article on the Global Times, an organ of the Communist Party, said that if Guilbeault pushed for China to

lashing out, calling Suncor’s moves disappointing and linking them to the forest fires that have ravaged much of the country this year.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith rightly described Guilbeault’s statements as showing “utter contempt” for the province and its industry.

“Minister Guilbeault's comments are a continuation of his provocative verbal attacks on Alberta's energy sector, the most environmentally responsible and ethical energy-producing jurisdiction in the world,” she said This battle is just heating up and I can hardly wait for the full on fight to break out when Guilbeault drops his new environmental regulations on the country tentatively scheduled for October.

Meanwhile, Alberta’s environment boss isn’t holding back on her federal

This year, back-to-school shopping is costing more than it ever has, with the average back-to-school shopping trip costing $700 per student. Charity and community support services are seeing record demand for school supplies.

In the past two years, it’s estimated the cost of school supplies has increased by 24%. This is not to mention the lunchbox items—bread and buns are up 8.1%. Apples are up 7.8%. Cookies and crackers are up 12.4%.

This is a direct result of inflationary

spending, taxation policy, and poor fiscal management by those at the head of our government. This extra stress on the family budget means more than just cutting back on extracurriculars and vacations, many are having to cut out the essentials.

According to reports, up to 45% of Canadian households who are making less than $60,000 a year are foregoing essential items. And 14% of Canadians anticipate they will have to go into debt just to pay for school supplies this year.

It’s not long before Members of Parliament go back to Ottawa to resume debating in the House of Commons.

Conservatives have been raising the alarm about inflation and the affordability chal-

lenges long before it came to this point.

Unfortunately, the Trudeau Liberals barrelled down the path which has led to so much stress for Canadians. It is truly a sad state of affairs when the Liberals brag about how they are “supporting Canadians to buy groceries.” From the failed carbon tax to monetary policy that is causing costs to skyrocket, Canadians need better.

I also want to highlight the importance of schools in rural communities and how some of the increased costs are exacerbated in rural and remote areas like East Central Alberta. In rural communities, schools go beyond the institution of learning, they are community meeting centres, the home of sporting events, and are centres for community activities. While we Canadians face challenges, I am grateful for the teachers, support staff, and parents who dedicate so much of their time not only to our children but to ensuring that rural schools succeed. And I would like to give a shoutout to all those organizations who help ensure that the basics are pro-

vided for families facing challenges, especially while affordability is such a challenge.

So, to students, teachers, and parents who are getting back into the routine: I hope despite the challenges that the year goes well, and that you remain hopeful about our future. And while students return to school, Canada’s Conservatives led by Pierre Poilievre will remain focused on addressing the challenges faced by Canadians and unleash the potential our nation has.

Glen Hamilton-Brown is Ryley CAO - again Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

The Village of Ryley has appointed former Ryley Chief Administrative Officer Glen Hamilton-Brown as their current CAO at a special council meeting Aug. 29, which became effective Sept. 1.

Hamilton-Brown said he is grateful for the trust the ouncil has put in him to take on the position of CAO for a second time.

“I'm deeply appreciative of Council (putting their) trust in me, and I am very hopeful and almost confident that the people of Ryley have that same trust in me,” he said during an interview.

“Otherwise, I wouldn't have stepped in to take this opportunity in this position.”

Hamilton-Brown said his history with the Village began in 2019 when he was appointed as CAO. He said his relationship with council soured when the new council were voted-in during the municipal election in 2021 and he was put on paid leave in Nov. 2021 pending an investigation into suspected mismanagement of Village funds.

He said that although a financial audit came back clean, new allegations were put forward result-

ing in his termination in June 2022.

“I was hurt. My honour, my integrity, and my reputation are very important to me, and (I didn’t like) the way things unraveled,” he said, adding his biggest source of contention was his relationship with former mayor Nik Lee. Hamilton-Brown said the two did not agree on several issues.

“I think he was doing what he believed was the right thing. I think in his mind, he believed I was corrupt because I was stymieing him.”

After his termination, Hamilton-Brown said he began legal action for wrongful dismissal and defamation which was ultimately settled with details publicly unavailable due to a non-disclosure agreement.

In June, the Village Council put forth a public apology to HamiltonBrown with Village Mayor Brian Ducherer detailing the wrong doings of the council toward him.

“Council for the Village of Ryley is issuing this formal apology to Glen Hamilton-Brown and former CAO who served the village of Ryley with distinction, dedication and loyal service from 2019 to 2022. The actions of council in suspending the

CAO Hamilton-Brown on November 3, 2021 and then subsequently terminating his employment was unwarranted and unsupported,” said Ducherer in the apology read during the July 24 council meeting.

“A forensic investigation into the matter revealed no misconduct or impropriety by Mr. Hamilton-Brown that would have warranted the suspension or dismissal. The Village regrets its actions in removing Mr. HamiltonBrown and the inaccurate messaging which is harmful to the Village and Glen HamiltonBrown’s reputation.”

Hamilton-Brown said he emailed the council after the public apology and byelection, offering an olive branch and a proposal.

“I sent them an email and I basically offered up that if Council thought that I was a good fit for CAO, then call me and we can get together for a special meeting,” he said, adding he received an immediate phone call which resulted in a meeting. “My condition was, I want all five of them to trust me. You know, I want there to be no question of my character. It wasn't an ultimatum, it was more a partnership agreement, and they

passed a resolution to hire me as CAO.” Meanwhile, HamiltonBrown said he is also grateful for the former interim CAO, Julie Brownridge who will remain in a contractor role for Hamilton-Brown’s transition into the CAO role.

“She’s always been there for me. She’s got such experience with the Village and she’s just a great advisor and a great consultant,” he said. “I’ve got to give kudos to her.”

Meanwhile, HamiltonBrown said that he has three goals for the Village Council moving forward.

“We’re going to have to review our strategic plan, build relationships to make sure Council and I are a cohesive team (while) supporting transparency of operations because I think that’s important, and third would be to figure out how we’re going to address our financial situation,” he said.

“Ryley's got a healthy revenue from the landfills, which is going to save us from a cash flow problem. But we have to somehow square the circle on the fact that the reserves are now

completely depleted (and) our infrastructure is well overdue.”

The Village of Ryley’s next council meeting is scheduled for Sept. 19 at 6:45 p.m. Hamilton-

Brown said he won’t be attending in person, due to a previously scheduled trip, but will attend online and facilitate the meeting from there.

Local teen professionally records two original songs Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

A young Tofield resident has her sights on a possible career in the music industry after professionally recording two original songs last month in Sherwood Park.

Vocalist Jordyn Charlesworth, 18, said she began singing in junior high school when she took part in the school musical. “(After the school musical) we needed someone to sing O Canada for the Tofield Skating Club and the president at the time thought of me because I had done the musical,” she said.

“And then that summer I ran into Jack Cooper and he kind of took me for lessons.”

Cooper, and his brother Jan, have been teaching vocal music to indigenous communities for several years and eventually opened their studio in Sherwood Park along with a second

location in Vancouver. Cooper not only taught Charlesworth, but also put her in touch with writers who could write songs for her.

“I recorded two of them; Rainbows and Roses and Teenage Fool,” she said. “Rainbows and Roses was a song that reminds me a lot of my boyfriend but it also reminds me a lot of my great grandpa and watching him with my great grandma. It’s kind of a love song, and country which is what I love to sing.”

Charlesworth said the second song, Teenage Fool, is a rhythm and blues song that suited her voice.

“It just suited my voice so perfectly that I kind of fell in love with it that way,” she said.

Meanwhile, Charlesworth recorded the songs at DanLyn Studios in Sherwood Park, teaming up with other musical talents including musician and producer Miles Wilkinson who has worked with Anne Murray

and Emmylou Harris.

“To have the opportunity to work with people like that, who know their craft, is just so amazing,” said Charlesworth.

“To watch him record (you) and then edit it. If you're flat or sharp or something, he can tweak it. To watch him just listen to it once (and) know exactly what to fix was just such (an) experience and then to hear it all come together is really cool.”

Charlesworth said once the songs are ready to be released, they will be promoted on social media platforms as well as played on indigenous radio stations in the area. In the meantime, Charlesworth said she is in school pursuing an education degree.

“My kind of attitude towards it is, I would love if that were to happen, but I also have a love of teaching,” she said.

“The experience of doing this was so great, (that) I would just be happy up to this point. But

if it took off and I could go further, I wouldn't say no.”

Alberta seniors service awards now open Patricia Harcourt The seniors in our communities are being celebrated for their service to others for the 25th year.

Nominations are now open for the 2023 Minister’s Seniors Service Awards as way of honouring the

seniors who give of their wisdom and experience in their home areas.

Everyone knows someone who has committed to their communities of their time and labour in some way or other that makes their community a better place.

Nine awards will be presented to

September is 15th annual Alberta Culture Days Month Patricia Harcourt September is Alberta Culture Days month and 2023 marks the 15th anniversary of its inception celebrating local culture in the province.

The popular month-long event celebrates art, music, food, dance and a lot more. It has grown over the years and many communities across the province get into the spirit of it.

The province is the sponsor and calls this “a rich and vibrant culture,” featuring artists, cultural groups, writers, dancers, film makers and musicians. Their work “plays an integral part of weaving the rich cultural tapestry of Alberta,” states the department of Arts and Culture.

Alberts is the only province to dedicate a month of celebrating artists. It all started in 2019 and is still going strong today.

“Alberta Culture Days grants have allowed us the opportunity to share immersive arts experiences with Albertans for free,” said

Annemarie Leenhouts-Petrov, president and CEO of the Francis Winspear Centre for Music and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

“At this. year’s Symphony in the Square, Albertans will experience the nostalgia of music with which they grew up and we’re thrilled to have this event kick off a monthlong celebration of arts and culture,” she said.

But there are going to be events at many communities over this month, many with the help of the 115 grants made to organizations to host Alberta Culture Days events.

Alberta gave $374,000 for those 115 celebration sites for events that are always free and open to the public.

Another 74 two-day host events were funded and 36 pop up one day events.

“I encourage Albertans to make time to celebrate the province’s diverse, rich, social and cultural tapestry this September,” said Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture, and Status of Women.

“Seniors across our province deserve to live vibrant lives with dignity and respect,” said Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services.

The deadline for nominations is November 26. Selected recipients will be celebrated at an in-person ceremony in March 2024.

RCMP warn of credit card activity scam Patricia Harcourt A scam is circulating in the region that involves area citizens receiving a bogus voice recording concerning credit card activity.

The RCMP is warning that there are multiple reports of calls that advise there is unusual activity detected on their VISA account. The caller says there are thousand dollar purchases being handled by online retailers on the card.

RCMP said the callers sometimes ask the person being called to ‘select 1’ to get in contact with customer service. Other calls have simply dropped without further interaction.

If people are being called or texted as a means of trying to gain personal information or gain their confidence, the police are urging great caution as this is likely an effort to defraud an individual.

They instruct people to ignore phone calls from international numbers or area codes the person is unfamiliar with. If a call is received concerning

unusual activity at your bank or other financial institution and appears fraudulent, simply hang up and phone the number back on their websites.

A big recommendation is to never follow links in texts or emails from emails that are unsolicited by yourself.

Go in person to your financial institution to confirm or verify the financial activity on your accounts.

The Canadian AntiFraud Centre at www.antifraudcentrecentreantifraude.ca will

take your complaint about someone who has defrauded you. The site can also provide information on the many different fraud scams in Canada.

Police are also urging residents to report any criminal or suspicious activity to their local detachment. Or remain anonymous and call Crime Stoppers at 1800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.

Local co-authors colourful book on northern wildlife Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

A new coffee table book, describing the life and times of North America’s most interesting wildlife, was recently published with one of the four co-authors being Geoff Holroyd, board chair for the Beaverhill Bird Observatory.

Holroyd said the over 200-page full colour illustrated book was 10 years in the making before finally being published this year.

“Over a decade ago, Halle Flygare, (who is) a longtime friend and has published a number of books, approached me and asked if I'd be interested in participating in this book project,” he said, adding that retired University of Calgary professor Valerius Geist, and nature writer/ wildlife photographer Wayne Lynch also came on board. “It kind of all came together. Halle was really the person that spearheaded it, and persisted. Getting a book published isn't easy.”

Holroyd said the book took a very long time to complete partly because the authors volunteered their time, and partly because it was difficult to find a publisher before connecting with Firefly publishing in Ont. “It was not a paid project, and we didn’t have a publisher or a deadline,” he said. “It was actually ready in 2018 but the pandemic interfered and then Halle had to beat the bushes to find a pub-

lisher.”

Holroyd said the book, titled ‘Wildlife of the North – Animals of the High Latitudes of North America and Europe’, shows a different side to a part of the country largely thought of as inhospitable.

“It talks about the amazing diversity of mammals and birds and wildflowers that occur in the Arctic, (which) we often think of as a cold and inhospitable place,” he said. “In fact, because it has 24 hours of daylight and generally lots of water, the Arctic is a fairly wet place. (It’s) because the water (and) snow melt and the water persists on the landscape.

We've got a huge diversity of birds and animals that live there and some of which stay there yearround. And then other birds are able to migrate and come south to warmer climates.”

While each of the authors spoke to different mammals and plant life, Holroyd focused on birds. He shared antidotes and stories of several different species including the Snow Bunting and the Lapland Longspurs who will continuously feed their young for more than 20 hours a day.

“They actually come down to Beaver County (and) the Tofield area in the winter, and in the Arctic have 24 hours (a day of) daylight. So, the parents feed for about 20 hours a day, but they overlap their break by two hours so the young

are actually getting fed 22 hours a day and they only get two hours to sleep whereas adults just take four hours to sleep,” he said. “But as a result, the young grow faster and fledge earlier than compared to Robins or Sparrows or birds down here that are limited by daylight.”

Holroyd said that because of the 24 hours of daylight, plants also grow continuously providing food for insects which in turn provides food for the birds.

“I actually made a few trips to the north and it's pretty hard to go very far without insect repellent or some way to protect oneself from the abundant insects that are in the north,” he said.

Holroyd said he hopes the book will inspire people and pique their interest about wildlife and birds.

“I'm hoping that (it) will inspire other people.

I left some in the school libraries, and in the town library, and hopefully that will inspire young people to think more about wildlife and whether they want to have a career or just appreciating wildlife,” he said. “It's all part of the same sort of theme of a

different way of mentoring people by, if I can't provide one on one opportunities, then this way I can do it third hand by providing information and colour photos that people can appreciate.”

Holroyd said signed copies of the 262-page book are currently available at the Moonshine Café in Tofield and will soon also be available at the Beaverhill Bird Observatory.

There was simulated Sumo Wrestling, face painting, a period costume photo booth, Ukrainian dance, a live band, a quilt show, and an official program with Premier Ed Stelmach in attendance.

Tofield Emergency Department returns to 24 hour service The Tofield Health Centre Emergency Department (ED), which has been operating under reduced hours due to staff shortages, will return to regular 24 hour service as of Monday, September 4.

This welcome news is due to the hiring and orientation of staff, including eight new registered nurses (RNs) and two licensed practical nurses (LPNs).

Alberta Health Services said in a release that they appreciate the patience and support of the community and staff “as we recruited and trained these valuable new staff members.”
