MP Damien Kurek is applauding the election of Pierre Poilievre as leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. The local MP for Battle River-Wainwright made an official statement on Poilievre’s successful leadership bid announced on Saturday, September 10. “It is a pleasure to congratulate the Hon. Pierre Poilievre on being elected leader of the Canada’s Conservatives and becoming the leader of the Official Opposition,” said Kurek. Kurek came out in favour of Poilievre and officially endorsed him for leader of his party during the leadership run that saw candidates from all perspectives
and political leanings within the Conservative movement take part. Jean Charest was considered the most “progressive” conservative taking part in the race for the party’s heart and soul, placing a distant second to the overwhelming win by Poilievre who garnered over 68 per cent of the vote. The party was formed in 2003 when the Progressive Conservative Party and the Reform/Alliance Party merged. Stephen Harper became the leader of this new party and prime minister of the country for many years. During that time, Poilievre was an MP in the Harper government and was known as one of his right hand men. From 2017 to 2022, Poilievre served as the shadow minister for finance and also had a short stay
as minister for jobs and industry. Kurek states that during the past eight months, Poilievre “connected with Canadians, who responded in an unprecedented way. Folks shared their struggles, fears and hope…and now a change is needed in Canada.” The new leader of the Conservative Party of Canada won on the first ballot with 68.15 per cent of the vote, winning all but eight of the 338 electoral ridings in the country. Charest won these eight ridings with four in Quebec and two in Ontario. Other candidates were Conservative MP Leslyn Lewis (9.69 per cent), former Ontario MPP Roman Baber (5.03 per cent), and MP Scott Atchison one per cent). See POILIEVRE P22
