Support for full time physician growing for Town of Bruderheim Michelle Pinon Editor
MICHELLE PINON PHOTO
There were a few heart-stopping moments during the Big Hitch late Sunday morning when it was halted for a short period of time after trying to negotiate a tight turn. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and the horses took a break by the welcome sign just off Highway 15.
Tom Miller trial verdict dates set December 19 and 20 have been set aside for the judge’s decision in the criminal fraud case against Tom Miller. Those dates were confirmed with Court of Queens Bench in Edmonton where the trail took place in January. The former Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Lamont was charged on May 28, 2013 with several charges of forgery and fraud following an RCMP criminal investigation.
The charges stem from an incident reported by Quebec based developer Gilles Filatreault who alleged Miller had attempted to negotiate kickbacks on a housing deal. Since final written submissions were made by the crown and defense early this spring there have been several postponements in setting of the sentencing dates. Court is scheduled to be in session starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 19.
Support for a full-time physician in the Town of Bruderheim continues to grow, and Mayor Karl Hauch expressed his gratitude during last Wednesday’s council meeting. Hauch was directly referring to a letter of support that was received from Lamont County council recently. “I am writing on behalf of Lamont County council to express our full support for Bruderheim obtaining a full-time doctor,” stated Reeve Wayne Woldanski. The reasons for county council’s support were also outlined in the letter. Woldanski stated that: “Many county residents living near the Town of Bruderheim would be well served by a nearby physician.” As well, “A physician located in Bruderheim would provide another medical practitioner to support our local hospital in the Town of Lamont, and I am aware that the Lamont hospital administration is a supporter of a physician locating in Bruderheim.” Woldanski went on to say, “A Bruderheim medical doctor would
offer the potential of a local walk in clinic which would reduce pressure on the Lamont hospital emergency room, and I understand that the physician considering a Bruderheim location wishes to focus services on occupational health and safety, a service we see as very important within Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Region.” Patty Podoborozny, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Bruderheim, said, “A community has to work closely with AIHS and our regional partners to ensure viability and sustainability of medical professionals in the community. The support from both has been tremendous, and we are hoping that we will have something more permanent in place by the end of 2017.” For several months now the Town of Bruderheim has been providing space in its office rent free to the community’s medical professional, and said, “there is always a full waiting room” of patients at the clinic which is open once a week. “As we move forward, we will continue to look
Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch for innovative ways to attract medical professionals to our community which provides support for not only our residents, but the Alberta Industrial Heartland,” added Podoborozny. Back in 2014, council identified attraction of medical professionals as the second priority for the community, behind upgrading infrastructure. Podoborozny went on to explain, “We have been working with local area physicians, Primary Care Network, and regional health providers to provide us with opportunities to attract medical professionals to our area…We are currently looking at options for a location in our community that would attract medical professionals on a more permanent basis.”

Dispute over impartiality mars work of ethics committee Michelle Pinon Editor
Although the mandate of the All Party 17 member Select Special Ethics Committee had not been totally completed, its work officially came to an end last Friday, that is unless a request to have it reconstituted to continue with its work is approved. Whether that
happens won’t be decided until after the legislature goes back in session Oct. 3. While the final committee meeting was “cordial” for the most part, PC MLA and committee member Dr. Richard Starke did say it did end in a few members acting out of line being out of order towards the end of the meeting.

The Lamont & District Chamber of Commerce held its annual fundriaser for the Lamont County Food Bank on Saturday, September 17 in the parking lot of Price Automotive. Volunteers Ron Wurtz, left, and Bob Goulet were kept busy cooking hamburgers. A total of $1,500 and 100 lbs. of non-perishible food items were collected during the event.
In fact, it was Dr. Starke who called the impartiality of committee chair NDP MLA Jessica Littlewoood into question during a meeting that was held on Monday, Sept. 19. Dr. Starke raised a point of concern at that meeting who accussed the chair of violating the “impartiality of the chair” when she contacted him personally on the telephone and inappropriately explained the NDP caucus’ position on work before the committee, and asked for the PC caucus’approach to the same work. Dr. Starke contends those actions directly violated the role of committee chairs to remain impartial and non-partisan. But MLA Jessica Littlewood has and continues to defend herself against allegations, and said she did nothing wrong in her role as committee chair. In a
by the committee. That is why it is common practice and common courtesy within the committee process.” She went on to explain, “Premier Rachel Notley and Official Opposition Leader Brian Jean struck the committee to have equal numbers between NDP members and opposition members. This has led to a number of tie votes, including whether leadership can-

Littlewood also ex-plained that it is the job of any committee chair to communicate with all party caucus’s that are at the table. Lamont Terry Fox Run raises $4,400 for cancer research foundation Michelle Pinon Editor
Carmen Palinchuk said it was her late father Len Siracky who started the family tradition of participating in the Lamont Terry Fox Run. “He still comes,” said
Palinchuk as she unzipped her jacket to reveal a photo of her dad attached to the inside front. Palinchuk’s sister Chris Guse was also by her side during the annual fundraiser for cancer research on Sunday, September 18.
They normally participate with their sister Louise Redmond and mother Toni Siracky, but they were away in BC for their neice’s graduation. “She wished she could be here.” But, they, along with several others were at the run in spirit. Joe Zazula, an 89-yearold Lamont resident took his bike on the run. At his age, Joe decided it was now or never, but he wanted to participate in honour and memory of his daughter who passed away from cancer three years ago. Joe said he also lost three brothers and a sister to the disease. “It’s the people who supported the campaign that deserve the credit,” stated Joe, who was very glad to participate in the Terry Fox Run. Joe, his supporters, as well as 16 other participants were able to raise $4,400. Run co-ordinator Mike Klita said there were a
total of 17 participants and six volunteers during this year’s run. While he was disappointed with the turn out, he did say there were a number of family functions and school related events that prevented some people from attending the event. Curt Malica attended the event along with his wife Nada and their three children Mykayla, Mytchal and Nadaya. Malica will be taking over as run co-ordinator next year, and Klita is glad the Knights of Columbus Council 6382 will be able to carry on the tradition in 2017.

Opinion From Where I Sit: Un-See
By Hazel Anaka A couple of guys my husband knows raved about the Tilted Kilt restaurant and pub. Because we needed to eat and were tired of the usual haunts, we
thought we’d check it out. We were no sooner through the door that we both knew exactly what the attraction was for these guys. It wasn’t the pub style food or the sports bar bank of TV screens covering every sport known to man. It wasn’t the music blaring through the place. It was clearly, clearly the barely dressed buxom waitresses. When we entered we weren’t even acknowledged until I called out to ask if we should seat ourselves. Two waitresses were hovering over, flirting with some loser at the bar.
I couldn’t make eye contact with any of these women. I was embarrassed on their behalf. How desperate for a job or tips do you have to be to take a job with a dress code like that? Only someone with testosterone could appreciate the plaid skirts that barely covered their asses and the skintight midriffbaring tops with overflowing (and gravitydefying) cleavage. To get the description right I refreshed my memory by Googling the restaurant. Trust me, there is no shortage of pictures. And because I’m a tireless researcher, I also noticed that you can
buy Tilted Kilt calendars. And that you too, can have a career at the Tilted Kilt. You just need to go to a Casting and Careers. Careers? Careers? How’s this for a job description? “Are you the Bombshell Next Door, next Hollywood Hottie or a Country Cutie? “Kilt Girl® entertainers are an elite group of women who are sexysmart, friendly and classy. Kilt Girls make great money and fast cash with flexible schedules while having fun at work. Be a part of the “Best Looking Sports Pub You’ve Ever Seen”
Quote of the Day Every discussion which is made from an egoistic standpoint is corrupted from the start and cannot yield an absolutely sure conclusion. The ego puts its own interest first and twists every argument, word, even fact to suit that interest. Paul Brunton
and APPLY TODAY! “What is an Audition? “Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery franchise auditions are a way for franchisees to evaluate applicants for the Kilt Girl role. Imagine trying to land a role in a Hollywood movie or sexy fitness calendar; you want to look and act your best! These auditions are just the same. To land the role, you gotta play it up, girl! Grab your favourite outfit, glam up your hair and make-up and visit a franchise location today for an audition. You may end up being the next calendar cover girl!” Oh My God! Isn’t this
what every young woman aspires to? Isn’t this what every parent hopes for their daughter? Isn’t it a huge steppingstone to lasting career and relationship success? I don’t get it. And I suppose I don’t need to. It doesn’t affect anyone I know or care about. But really, is this what we want for any woman? I thought objectifying women was over. I thought women selling themselves for money was passé. And even though we won’t be back, I can’t un-see (or forget) those servers, from where I sit.
Letter to the Editor Ongoing support appreciated Dear Editor, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community of Lamont and its surrounding county for their ongoing support of the County of Lamont Food Bank. Thank you to the Lamont Leader for covering our events such as the fantastic barbeque that the Chamber of Commerce put on for our benefit on September 17. Thank you to all the members and their families who volunteered their time to make the event a success! Thank you to the Lamont Fire Department and the Chamber for
donating burgers, hotdogs, buns, etc. to our food bank once their bbq’s were said and done. Thank you to the members of the community who continue to keep us in your thoughts and dropping off garden produce, monetary donations, as well as staples that we use every week. Whether you bought an extra can at the grocery store and dropped it into a donation bin or held a golf tournament or another function with proceeds going to benefit the food bank please know that you’re making your community a better place to live! Thank you to all the
volunteers who lend a hand. Your time and talents do not go unnoticed! On behalf of all the members of the board I thank you all, and invite you to join us for an organizational meeting for the Christmas hamper committee. Opinion We don’t want to give our wells away...But The times in Alberta are tough. At Perpetual Energy we are doing everything we can to remain a productive and viable contributor to Alberta’s economy. We know many people in this province rely on us for a living and this point does not escape us. So why would we offer to give away our wells to municipalities? Simple – we have come to a point where we can’t afford the property taxes any longer. These properties are in a cash loss situation and unsustainable for us to continue operating. But if the county owned the assets production could continue, royalties and lease rentals could be paid, jobs and the ripple of economic activity could be maintained and whatever cash flow there was left could mitigate the lost property taxes to some degree too. Of course, municipalities have the need for revenue and we are prepared to pay our fair share of taxes. The fundamental problem is the assessment by municipalities of oil and gas properties vastly overstates the value of the assets resulting in colossal taxes. The regulated guidelines used by municipalities and the Alberta government
need to be revised to reflect an even-handed assessment process for these mature shallow gas assets. Annual property taxes are intended to be a small percentage of the assessed value of physical assets. For homeowners, this means they pay tax on the assessed value of their property which is calculated based on current market conditions. If the price of homes sold go up or down in the community, the assessed value by municipalities reflects these variances. The marketplace does not stop oil and gas properties from becoming less valuable over time. Production creates a natural decline of product resulting in properties becoming less valuable. The regulated value assessment process does not adequately factor this reality. The result is what we face today, taxes that are unaffordable and impacting our ability to continue to produce these wells. Unfortunately this makes us all losers; employees, local businesses, land owners, residents and of course our company too. We have suggested to municipalities that they use of the property values determined by the
energy regulator, which better reflects the current situation. We have displayed, that using the Alberta Regulators’ value, a property tax is calculated that becomes more affordable for our operations. Our best case scenario for mutual benefits is to donate the wells to the municipalities. This will generate municipal revenue now and for the future. We recognized that municipalities don’t have the expertise to run a gas operation, so we offered to provide a very affordable contract operations agreement. This issue is not something that has just surfaced. Frankly, the industry has been attempting to find solutions that create a fair municipal tax situation for years. The Alberta energy sector pays over $1.0 billion towards property taxes annually. The harsh impact of commodity prices has made the need to find a fair tax solution even greater than ever. If we could reach an agreement on assessment procedures, the province, local communities and our company’s employees and shareholders would benefit. We invite all parties to unite and seek creative approaches. For exam-
ple, creating a formula that for assessed value that adequately reflects depreciation through production and considers current commodity prices. This would allow for all parties to work together and share fiscal outcomes in good and bad times. Do we want to give away our wells? Not
really! But, we see this is the most viable option to maximize value of these natural gas resources for the people of Alberta and the residents of the county. We fully recognize there are two sides to every debate but we think everyone can agree on one fact – these are tough economic times

In addition to the market, the Bench Show takes place in the main hall. Entries will be accepted the Friday evening before and Saturday until 10:00 am. The Rainbow Club will once again host their perogy dinner from 11:302:30pm at the Rainbow Centre which is 2 blocks east of the Community
Centre. New this year, we are eager to host the first annual Garlic Festival Parade! This will take place at 1 pm down main street Andrew. Let’s hope for some nice weather as it is also the second year of the Garlic Festival Show and Shine. This year promises to bring a fabulous display of classical cars! You can find this taking place down at the Andrew Grain Elevator and flowing down Ed Stelmach Avenue. In addition, the Andrew Museum will be open from 11 am - 4 pm. As the village streets will be busy with activity, please be sure to take in all the activities going on at the Community Centre all day long. Our main stage will be a highlight of entertainment, contests, and bingo during the day. Get in on the action of Garlic Family Feud, and
be entertained by the country sunshine square dancers. Do you have a little speedster at home? Enter them in the baby crawl/walk/run, the tricycle race or the 3 legged race. It’s all for fun! Going into the fifth year is the Amazing Garlic Race! This race is centered around the garlic festival and is always entertaining! Adapted from the TV series, teams of two are required to complete a task before receiving their next clue. You must preregister for the race. . We will be hosting some experts on growing garlic and the health benefits of garlic. They are eager to share their knowledge with you. This takes place at 2:00pm in the upstairs of the Community Centre. Please be sure to bring the youngsters as there is a great selection of activ-
ities for children of all ages. They are sure to enjoy the scavenger hunt, balloon animals, bouncy houses, zorb balls, horse carousel, glitter tattoos, face painting, petting zoo, kids tractor pulls and of course the hay rides available to everyone all day long. As you can see, the festival does have something for everyone and we hope that many people will come and enjoy themselves. For our evening entertainment, we have the Country Family Hoe Down! Dig out your blue jeans and cowboy boots and bring the whole family! It all begins at 6:30pm with a harvest supper and then get ready for a good old country dance featuring “The Band Morrison”. The Andrew Agricultural Society and the Andrew Community Centre Association
THE CARD IS PLASTIC, OUR PROMISE ISN’T.
teamed together approximately six years ago to take over the annual Garlic Festival and it has grown beyond our expectations. Every year seems to get bigger and bigger and it is rewarding to be able to provide this social event for our community and surrounding area. It is a growing experience every year and we take great satisfaction in knowing what we are able to accomplish. The festival is operated 100% by volunteers and it is great to see so many people pitch in and lend a hand to help things run smoothly. We truly appreciate everyone’s help and we are always looking for more volunteers. We are happy to be able to support all our local clubs as well with the festival. It is this type of community event that benefits everyone.
In addition, we are always looking for sponsors as it is quite costly to put on many aspects of the festival and we want to be sure to keep it affordable for families to take in all the activities. We are still looking for sponsorship and silent auction items and if you are willing to help out, please call Carri or email: H Y P E R L I N K “mailto:info@andrewags o c i e t y . c o m ” info@andrewagsociety.c om. `Please watch your mailbox this week as we will be mailing out Garlic Festival Pamphlets to households in the Lamont County and area. So please remember to mark down on your calendars, Saturday, October 8th. Come on down to Andrew and enjoy the festival!

Lamont County appoints new regional fire chief Michelle Pinon Editor David Zayonce had been watching from afar how the new regional fire service in Lamont County was working, now the longtime fire services professional will be operating this municipality’s system close up as he will be taking the helm as new Regional Fire Chief for Lamont County beginning Oct. 17. “It’s just a wonderful opportunity,” stated Zayonce during a telephone interview last Friday. It was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up, and one he is very excited about. “They, (Lamont County), have been very good to me,” he added. Zayonce expects there will be a bit of a learning curve when he takes
over shortly, and will be getting the lay of the land when he begins his new position in three weeks time. Zayonce, who also serves as the Mayor of Viking, plans on moving to Lamont County as soon as he can sell his home there. Robyn Singleton, Chief Administrative Officer for Lamont County, says “Chief Zayonce brings a wealth of experience to the position, having served in various capacities in the fire service over the past 28 years.” Singleton went on to say Zayonce has served as Fire Chief with the Town of Wainwright, Regional Fire Chief for Beaver County, and its successor, the Beaver Emergency Services Commission, and is currently Regional Fire Services Co-ordinator for Camrose County. He has

also served as Director of Disaster Services and Director of Emergency Management, and has been an instructor at Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre.” Zayonce has an extensive training background which includes the Fire Service Leadership Program from Dalhousie University, a Bachelor of Public Safety Administration from the Justice Institute of British Columbia, numerous NFPA Fire Fighter and Trainer courses, and United States National Fire Academy courses, pointed out Singleton. Currently, Zayonce is just finishing up his Masters of Science in Public Safety, (specializing in Emergency Management), through Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Zayonce was elected the Mayor of Viking in 2013, and has lived in Viking with his wife and four children since 2008. Zayonce said running for council was a personal and family choice, and that he wanted to be a part of solutions in the community. “Lamont County council is looking forward to working with Chief Zayonce to further enhance the Regional Fire Service Model built for the county, and towns of Bruderheim, Lamont, Mundare and the villages of Andrew and Chipman.” Lamont County Emergency Services operates a regional fire service model that manages and directs five district fire stations and approximately 100 volunteer firefighters.

A fundraising campaign is now underway in Mundare for a local teen who was seriously burned in an accident. According to an article that is posted along with Cameron Richard’s photo besides a collection jar in the Mundare Bakery, “On Sunday, September 4th, 2016 a horrible accident happened to a wonderful young man. Cameron was lighting a bonfire in his backyard and the
wind changed direction and caught him on fire. “He is now in the University Hospital Stollery Children’s Burn Unit fighting second and third degree burns to his face, chest, hands, neck and back. “This wonderful young man is trying to stay positive and strong while in immense pain as he is determined to get back to school in a few months to be able to be with his friends again. Cameron’s wonderful and brave mother has agreed to let me start this
campaign on behalf of her family to raise money to help her to be able to remain at his side as much as possible. Any money raised will go directly to keeping his family fed, housed and supported while they wait to see what happens next as Cameron will be undergoing several surgeries and procedures in the next few months. New Buddy Benches fostering friendships and inclusion Michelle Pinon Editor
Several playgrounds throughout Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) division are now equipped with a one-ofa-kind feature that is getting rave reviews from students, parents and educators alike. It’s the Buddy Bench, an innovative tool used to create more inclusive playgrounds, and they are located at Lamont Elementary School, Bruderheim School, and Lakeland Ridge School in Sherwood Park. The concept of the Buddy Bench is quite simple in nature, if a student doesn’t have someone to play with outside they sit on the Buddy Bench. Once another student sees that person sitting on the bench, it becomes their responsibility to invite that child to join them. In essence, it’s an inclusive way to
make new friends and try new activities. Nora Wisselink, Librarian Technician at Lamont Elementary School said the Buddy Bench is an ordinary bench with a special purpose, which is to promote “friendship and inclusion” for students. “The new Buddy Bench at Lamont Elementary was initiated and funded by the Parent Advisory Council. The buddy bench idea has been around for some time in Europe, and recently became very popular in the United States and Canada.” She went on to say, “The Buddy Bench is found in the K-Grade 2 playground area, and has become a symbol of friendship and a reminder to reach out to all students. Students use the bench to make friends, help them find a buddy, and just for chilling. Emma, in Grade 1
SUBMITTED PHOTO
The Buddy Bench at Lamont Elementary School is a most welcome addition to the playground. sums it up best, “It’s for you, if you are lonely and need a friend. If you sit there, somebody will come and play with you.” Bruderheim School Principal Jeff Huculak said the Buddy Bench is bright, colourful and welcoming. Having the Buddy Bench on the playground, “has facilitated inclusion and kindness at recess, and in Character Education
classes students have shared that they like the Buddy Bench because they don’t have to walk around alone. Students indicate that when they sit on the Buddy Bench, someone will come and invite them to play. Likewise, kids have shared that when they see someone on the Buddy Bench they make sure that person is offered an opportunity to join in their games.”

Andrew School Assistant Principal Greg Cruickshank led the charge of students during the annual run that was held on Wednesday, September 21. With the support of staff, students, parents, and community members, this small school raised an amazing amount of $2,000. All proceeds go to the Terry Fox Foundation which directs nearly all its funds to cancer research.

The Lamont Leader (Lamont, Alberta), Tuesday, September 27, 2016 - 15
Association hosts Andrew Young Memorial Trap Shoot SUBMITTED ARTICLE On a cool September Sunday, eight youths, 15 years of age or younger, were out shooting trap instead of being home on Facebook with their friends. The wind was gusty, making the clay pigeons dance around and providing a more challenging target that most adults would find difficult to hit. The rain was on and off and our score sheets have been wetter. Thank goodness for a portable shelter that was purchased by one of our members of the Fort Saskatchewan Fish and Game Club at a garage sale this past summer. The shoot started out with a practice round consisting of two clays from each of the five shooting stations. Then the competition started in earnest as the winner gets first choice of a wide assortment of prizes donated from various local merchants as well as a bonus prize of a Banquet ticket to the Fort Saskatchewan Fish and Game’s 53rd Annual Wild Game Banquet and Trophy Ball in March, 2017. The main game consisted of five shots from each of the five shooting stations for a total of 25 shots. The Fort club supplies
all the shells and clays as well as four different 20 gauge shotguns and a 12 gauge double barrel side by side. These firearms were purchased with a grant from ACA (Alberta Conservation Association) several years ago. And for the smaller physical sized youth there is a .410 that one of the members always brings out. For one of these youths this was the first time handling a shotgun and after some safety instruction and excellent mentoring by a competent adult, he was able to connect. Young 10-year-old Austin set up the pace with a fantastic eight out of ten for the first two frames. Teri-Lynn, the only young lady, Grade 8) had a two for two half way through the shoot. The eventual winner was Jacob with a fantastic score of 17 out of 25 which is 68%. All the youth were very safe on the shooting line and an excellent job done by the Range Safety Officer. Thanks to the score keepers, the Adults that mentored the youths, and especially Valerie for doing everything else and a big thank you to the Mundare Fish and Game Association for the use of their range.
SUBMITTED PHOTOS The 46th annual Andrew Young Memorial Trap Shoot was recently hosted by the Fort Saskatchewan Fish & Game Association at the Mundare shooting range. Photo to left; Mark Zyla from Mundare, (left), shot 15/25, and Bruderheim shooter Jacob Nice with 17/15, and on the right is Austin Patrie also from Mundare with 10/10. Despite the inclement weather, a good time was had by one and all.

James Major and Trudy Barber, employees with Richmond Steel Recycling, spent from Aug.12-22 compacting and baling 346.93 tonnes of metal at the St. Michael landfill. Originally the metal pile weighed 450,000 kgs, and took just over a year to collect. The metal is shipped in barges to Seattle that converts the commodity into rebar which is repurposed and sold internationally.
