Heroes In The Sky raises $1,900 for Lamont Fire Dept.

Members of the Lamont Fire Department hosted their annual Heroes In The Sky fundraiser on Saturday, September 10 in the parking lot between the Town of Lamont and Lamont County administration buildings. Even though there had to be a last minute change in venue to accommodate ongoing road construction, folks had no problem spotting the site of the barbecue, which also featured raffles, bouncy attraction, dunk tank, and vehicle extrication. Organizer Lt. Andrew McDonald, who provided comments during the vehicle extraction, said that attendees really enjoyed that aspect of the event. “Many people said they had never seen it. It was very enlightening, and gave them an idea of what we do, and
Lt. Andrew McDonald why we do it.” Public support from local residents and members of the business community, added McDonald, and funds raised will be set aside for advanced training. One of the highlights of McDonald’s time with the fire department was the recent opportunity to travel to Indianapolis, Indiana for an intense one week training course. McDonald was one of 37,000 firefighters from around the world, who participated in this once in a life opportunity. “I
was one of five firefighters that Lamont County sent there.” McDonald said he particularly enjoyed the farm extrication courses and meth lab explosion demonstration. “I had never tried that.” He also liked the fact that the people who wrote the textbooks and manuals, also taught their own courses. There was also hands on and live fire training exercises. “There was not only hands on practical stuff, but also leadership inside the hall” in addition to an informative large scale tradeshow. “The biggest thing I took away from it is that were are part of a very big picture.” Having listened to the accounts from 9-11 from several of the firefighters there was also very powerful and he went away more knowledgeable and exhilarated to do even more for the Lamont Fire Department.
Members of the Bruderheim Fire Department, under the direction of Capt. Leslie Clarke, conducted a vehicle extrication exercise for fundraiser attendees.

Lamont & District Chamber of Commerce hosts successful safety presentation to local businesses Michelle Pinon Editor
Around 50 people gathered in the meeting room of the Lamont Recreation Centre last Thursday evening for a business safety and security training information session. The meeting, organized by the Lamont & District Chamber of Commerce, saw business owners, operators, as well as front counter staff in attendance for the presentation that focused on theft prevention, safe guarding from business break and enters, protection of internal and external fraud and online fraud, protection of valuable data, and dealing with hostile customers and employees. Cst. Derrick Koller of
the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP went over theft and break and enter deterrents such as visibility, lighting, proper signage, access to roof, barred and dead bolted doors and windows. Video surveillance system equipped with exterior and interior cameras were recommended as well as training as to how to export to disc or memory care. Cst. Koller also recommended to make it a priority to have the surveillance ready for an officer as it can lead to identification of suspects, vehicles, and establish timelines. He also covered what to do if you have discovered a break in. To call 911 and let the dispatcher know you are on scene and look for any visible or audible signs or if suspects are still inside. If
Cst. Derrick Koller the suspects are still inside, you are to get to safety, and keep police on the line. If no one is inside, wait for a coworker or police to enter, and be mindful not to contaminate any evidence. Cst. Koller also covered the topic of dealing with hostile customers and how to recognize aggression. He suggested staying calm and not

Bruderheim skate park gains support Michelle Pinon Editor
Support for a new skateboard park in Bruderheim gained even more momentum last week thanks to the willingness of town council and the support of a local organization. Council supported a motion to set aside $20,000 from reserves so the town could move forward and apply for matching grant funding from the province. In addition, members of the Bruderheim Lions Club, agreed to support the project financially by donating $5,000 at its Sept. 8 meeting. Lions Club President Darby Dunn said the service based organization’s mission is to donate funds back into the community. As an example, in 2016 the Bruderheim Lions Club donated $10,000 to various organizations in the community including: Aikido club, Lioness Club, Communities In Bloom, Bruderheim Minor Sports Associa-
tion, and various programs run through Bruderheim Elementary School. The Lions Club play a critical role in the well being of people in the town, and also donated a substantial amount of money to the previous skateboard park and outdoor skating rink. Town council also threw more support behind the project by setting aside savings from 2015. A total of $191,137.49 was left over from last year’s operating budget. A total of $59,471.49 was set aside in operating contingency reserve, $43,333 was set aside in the building life cycle reserve, and $20,000 was set aside in the skateboard park reserve as agreed upon at the Sept. 7 town council meeting. Mayor Karl Hauch said directing $20,000 to the project will now bring the dollar value of funds raised to $100,000 which now allows administration to apply for matching government grants, and “that
will give us a very real opportunity to have this park built next summer!” Hauch said having a safe and secure place for youth to skateboard is a high need priority. “The old skateboard park was removed from service two summers ago, and so the urgency is real to have this key piece of

Opinion From Where I Sit: Make My Life Easier
By Hazel Anaka My collection of business cards irks me. Because I’m a bona fide card picker-upper the pile is getting out of hand. Depending on the day I may have two,
three, or four to remove from my purse. They are then dumped on my desk. If I need to follow up in some way they stay front and centre as a visual reminder. This summer at a fixture store I managed to barter a used female mannequin (without arms) for three dozen pyrohy. The catch was the store manager had to come to Babas & Borshch Ukrainian Festival in order to collect! The transaction was fun and I scored a couple of clearance priced stanchions. Naturally, I wanted to do a shout-out to them on social media. The card gave me the details.
Sometimes I need to make a call or write an email. Often I want to add the details into my computer’s email address book or smart phone contacts. If the card is for my personal use I may need it to make a medical or beauty appointment. Sifting through a two or three inch pile of unfiled cards isn’t fun. So one afternoon as I half-watched a madefor-TV movie I gathered the loose cards, two three-ring binders and sheets, and a business card box for those that defy sorting. After separating the work cards from the personal ones, I dealt with the duplicates.
As I looked at the ones in the binders I knew many of them were outdated. I noticed the telltale perforated edges of do-it-yourself cards. I admired the beauty of others. I used this exercise as a memory jogger. Sometimes the name on the card is more important than the business or organization they represent. I hadn’t thought about some of these people in years. On some I had written notes or added context to the card. Other times, especially with doctor’s cards, I remembered specialist visits. I teared up again as I handled my derma-
tologist’s card. It was Hilary who told me this thirty-something brand new mother died suddenly in March. She was lovely, caring, competent, and I’ll miss her. I mourn her lost potential. Others reminded me of the nincompoops who managed to open medical practices. Although there are (of course) apps for scanning business cards into smart phones, for now I’m a holdout. I like that some cards have maps on them. That some have space for recording appointment details. That some convey additional information on the back.
I have a priest’s card with a scripture verse on it. Other cards with micro messages on handling media interviews, introducing speakers, daily renewal, remembering names, rituals of visionary leaders, and a seven-day challenge. I don’t think there’s an app for that. But I do know it’s very time consuming to manually enter contact info into a phone, so maybe I have to break down and buy some help. Luckily I can use all the tools to make my life easier, from where I sit.
Quote of the Day “We will remember every rescuer who died in honour. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember...” George W. Bush 2016 marked the 15th anniversary of September 11th tragedy, and for a local firefighter its was especially poignant as he got to hear first hand from one of the firemen who were on scene at the twin towers that fateful day. “He sent in 30 of his men, and none of them came back,” stated Andrew McDonald, who was one of the firefighters to hear a first hand account during a recent international firefighters conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. He also made me think about how lucky we are to have brave and strong firefighters in our midst who risk life and limb for our well being on a regular basis. Answering a fire call could cost them their lives, and I think it is beholding to us to show them all the support we can give, whether it is moral or financial support. They are always ready to serve, no matter the time of day or night, and it really is not too much to ask to say thank you to them. Perhaps those two words will be the most important words they need to hear to keep volunteering their time for the great good, for all of us. Michelle Pinon

Lock it or lose it campaign SUBMITTED ARTICLE Members of Heartland Citizens on Patrol (C.O.P.) in conjunction with the RCMP took part in an educational campaign on Sept. 3 in the City of Fort Saskatchewan, to remind vehicle owners to lock their vehicle doors and to keep valuables that are left inside their vehicle out of sight. The goal of the cam-
paign was to reduce the number of thefts from parked vehicles by eliminating crimes of opportunity. The campaign lasted an hour during which time the Heartland C.O.P. issued 173 educational tickets by observing parked vehicles on the streets and in the parking lots. Lock it or Lose it Educational Tickets were placed under the wind-
shield wipers which indicated various ways that the vehicle owner could eliminate theft from their vehicle. The Results of the Lock it or Lose it campaign: -88 electronics in view -52 possessions or cash in plain view -11 garage door openers in vehicles -4 prescriptions medication bottles in plain view -2 keys left in vehicles
-2 open windows The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP along with the C.O.P. would like to remind residents that they can help to reduce thefts in the community by ensuring that their parked vehicles have valuables removed from plain sight, doors are locked and ensuring that their windows are rolled up.

Association reports worst year on record for drilling activity High River, AB – The Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors (CAODC) reported that 2016 will be the worst year on record for drilling activity. This is devastating news not only for my riding of Foothills, but for Alberta, and the rest of Canada. “The oil and gas services industry is facing the most difficult economic time in a generation,” CAODC president Mark Scholz said in a separate
press release. “In fact, 2016 will be the worst year in our recorded drilling activity history. If the federal government is serious about strengthening the middle class and creating long-term employment opportunities for Canadians, it needs to approve these projects,” Scholz added. According to the CAODC, since 2014 over 5,000 people who are directly employed in the drilling industry have
lost their jobs. Indirect jobs are also affected with almost another 30,000 people now unemployed due to the downturn. The CAODC lays blame with the Liberal Government dragging their feet on pipeline and liquefied natural gas project reviews, on top of Alberta’s NDP Government’s new carbon pricing policy and its hike on corporate taxes. “It’s a shame the NDP government is putting
oil producers to operate in our province,” Member of Parliament John Barlow said. “The Liberals are exacerbating the situation by delaying new pipeline and liquefied natural gas projects.
Their dangerous plan to introduce a federal carbon tax on top of existing provincial carbon tax systems is going to kill jobs and economic growth.”

While some people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s may think it’s too early, many people find that prearranging their funeral is smart financial planning and gives them added peace of mind knowing they aren’t leaving this burden to family members. By taking time now to collect cost information and calmly making choices related to your own funeral arrangements, you’ll be protecting your family against the stress of having to make these decisions at a time of extreme emotional distress. Editor
Members of the newly formed Andrew Cruisers Car Club will be hosting their inaugural Show & Shine on Saturday, October 8. The event, held in conjunction with the Andrew Garlic Festival will go from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the grounds of the community centre. Registration is $15 per entry, and all of the reg-
istration fees will be donated to Haying in the ’30’s, an Alberta based non-profit organization that offers support to cancer patients who are undergoing treatment. Members George Keddie and Milton O’Brien are excited about the Show & Shine, and are hoping for a good turn out from collectors and automobile enthusiasts alike. “There aren’t too many other clubs in the area,” noted
Keddie, who also hopes to gain some new members in the process. Keddie, who also belongs to the Chipman Car Crafters Club, says Show & Shine’s are a great way to meet people with common interests, and says folks will get to choose their own favourite vehicle, with door prizes and entertainment being held throughout the day.

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP embroiled in phone scam Fort Saskatchewan, AB The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP have received numerous complaints involving a phone scam where the local RCMP Detachment phone number (780-992-6100) is being used. Unknown person(s) are calling random citizens, identifying themselves as an “Officer”, and then indicating that there is a warrant out for their arrest. Victims of these scams are being advised that they owe a specified amount of money, and then asked for their personal information.
Victims have described the caller to be a male sounding voice, with an East Indian accent. They have also indicated that the suspect is verbally aggressive, indicating if they do not pay, the police will come and arrest them. Cpl. Jennifer BROWN with the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP advises “the police do not execute warrants over the phone, and they do not take your money in order to deal with outstanding warrants”. Police are warning the public that they should
not provide anyone their personal or banking information over the phone, as you never know who is on the other end. If you have any concerns, please contact your local RCMP / Police Service, or attend your local detachment. If anyone has any information regarding this crime, they are requested to contact Fort Saskatchewan RCMP at 780-997-7900. Or, if you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers.
St. Michael waterline proceeds Michelle Pinon Editor With provincial, federal and municipal funding in place, progress on the regional waterline to St. Michael is now moving ahead. Lamont County Chief Administrative Officer Robyn Singleton confirmed the firm of Associated Engineering has been hired to develop the detailed design plan for the $7.5 million project. This past Friday, the engineering firm was selected, and will provide a detailed design to council at a cost of $700,000. Actual con-
struction costs of the waterline is pegged at $6.5 million. The waterline will run from the county’s reservoir (just off Highway 15) near Lamont and travel northeast to the Hamlet of St. Michael, at total distance of 21 kilometres. Ninety per cent of the $7.5 million waterline will be funded by the federal and provincial governments with the county pitching in $1 million. “We hope to move this along as expeditiously as possible,” stated Singleton. The county will not have to purchase any private land for the waterline

that will be installed by directional drilling. He added that the only spots along the way that will have to be dug up are where the pieces of line that will be joined, and that will help avoid any environmental issues as well. We waterline is for the supply of water for domestic use. “We won’t be doing any household connections, and there will be limited tie ins.” Singleton said the county is looking at the most cost effective way of building the waterline and how it can reach its maximum potential. Possible waterline oversizing and possible truck fill will also be investigated during the planning process. “We hope to have the tender documents ready in early 2017,” noted Singleton. Construction is expected to start in the Spring of 2017 and be complete by the end of November with it being fully operational by March 31, 2018.

Charges laid in gravel theft Michelle Pinon Editor
For the first time in the history of Lamont County a resident has been charged with theft of gravel. Lamont County Peace Office Steve Crosby told council during the Sept. 9 meeting that a resident has been charged with theft under $5,000. Public Works Director Harold Hamilton said theft of gravel is not an uncommon practice in the county, but is something they are getting serious about. While the accused cannot be named, the charge was laid by Two Hills RCMP, and they are slated to appear in court in November.

Love for the harvest does not age for Stanley Malica SUBMITTED BY VERONICA STOLLERY Taking him back to a time of his farming days, Stanley Malica celebrated his 90th birthday with a ride on a combine. Stanley spent the evening of Friday, Sept. 9 driving the combine with son Mark, enjoying a meal with his family out on the field, and watching a colourful display of fireworks to the tune of his family singing “Happy Birthday”. The Malica Family Farm, located 10 miles north of Lamont, (just east of the intersection of Highway 45 and Highway 831), has grown to four generations. The year 2016 marks the 117th year on the homestead. It all began when Mateusz Malica, his wife Sofia, and their three-year-old son, John, immigrated to Canada in 1898. In spring of 1899, at a cost of ten dollars, Mateusz obtained 160 acres, 1/4 section of land in the Skaro district. Stanley was born on September 6, 1926 to John and
Nancy Malica. Stanley worked with his siblings on the farm, clearing the land and harvesting crops. Stanley, with his wife Helen, raised seven daughters and three sons on the homestead. Their three sons, Mark, Robert, and Curt, continue farming together in partnership operating as AAA Natural Foods. They’ve turned that ten dollar investment into a million dollar enterprise. The original homestead is now owned by Robert Malica who is currently a Lamont County Councillor. Robert’s three sons work on the farm with a vision to keep the homestead in the family name, continuing on to the fifth generation. Stanley and Helen, who have been married 64 years, have 25 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The couple currently reside in Dr. Turner Lodge in Fort Saskatchewan. Over the years Stanley has seen many changes in the farming equipment and in the farming business.
There has been a variety of crops planted over the years but we can still see the familiar wheat, oats, and barley grown and harvested in the Skaro district. Stanley prays that farmers be blessed with God’s grace to produce a good yield and a successful harvest.

A total of 27 family members came out to enjoy the birthday meal in the field. The field forms part of the quarter section of the homestead.

Beaverhills BioDiversity Trail officially opens
PATRICIA HARCOURT PHOTOS
The Beaver Hills Biodiversity Trail Grand Opening was held at the trail head located at 52521 - Range Road 211, 4.5 km south of Highway 16 on the east side of Range Road 211 in Strathcona County. After the trail was officially opened, Glen Lawrence, Chair of the Beaver Hills Biosphere Initiative, led those present on an interpretive walk. The trail combines traditional interpretation tools with new features to educate the hikers and help them experience biodiversity. Patricia Harcourt Tofield Mercury Editor
Tina Cosby represented Lamont County last Friday for the grand opening of the first project initiated since the Beaver Hills Moraine was designated a UNESCO Biosphere on March 21, 2016. The ribbon cutting ceremony for the Beaver Hills Biodiversity Trail was held at the head of the trail system on the east side of Range Road 211 in Strathcona County. However, those representing the different municipalities that belong to the Beaver Hills Initiative, the group that spearheaded the designation, also took time to officially proclaim Sept. 9 as Beaver Hills Biosphere Day. Proclamations were read by Beaver County Reeve Kevin Smook, Leduc County Councillor Rick Smith, Strathcona Councillor Bonnie Riddell, Strathcona County Mayor Roxanne Carr and Lamont County’s Tina Cosby. “With over 30 organizations collaborating, we have achieved prestigious global recognition of the Beaver Hills as a model of sustainable development and stewardship,” said Carr, referring to the fact that Beaver Hills is one of 600 sites globally recognized for their work in human
and economic development done in an ecologically sustainable manner. The biosphere reserve is located east of Edmonton and includes the west end of Beaver County and parts of Lamont County. It is easily recognizable by its rolling, hummocky hills of moraine that sits about 100 metres higher than the relatively flat land surrounding it. It supports a patchwork of wetlands, small lakes and forested uplands. People like to visit popular destination sites in the 1,572 square kilometres of moraine such as Elk Island National Park, Miquelon Lake Provincial Park, Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area, Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, Ministik Lake Game Bird Santuary and the Strathcona Wilderness Centre. The Beaver Hills Initiative began in 2002 when Elk Island National Park staff saw a need for regional collaboration to ensure issues, such as development and land use planning, included sustainable ecological and natural factors. There are now 20 member organizations including four municipalities: Lamont County, Beaver County, Leduc County and Strathcona County. Other groups in the Initiative fold are the

The trail that was officially opened is built on land purchased by Strathcona County as part of the Legacy Land Program “to complement the natured based programming at the Wilderness Centre, and to conserve habitat,” added Carr. She noted this was the first joint project since the area was proclaimed a UNESCO biosphere, and credited everyone involved “for working tirelessly in making the trail possible. This trail will inspire our visitors and citizens...to feel the biodiversity, culture and
long range vision of the biosphere.” Annie McKitrick, MLA for Sherwood Park, spoke on behalf of the provincial government, stating the project was realized through the collaboration of all the different municipal governments and local jurisdictions, including Elk Island National Park. She looked forward to seeing what the new UNESCO designation would mean for the area, noting: “If we don’t preserve biodiversity it will be gone. Thanks to all who volunteered and who worked on the initiative. I hope many come out to enjoy the biodiversity trail.” Lawrence acted as Master of Ceremonies
for the day. “We have so much in this area of Beaver Hills to do, we’re so lucky we have it,” he said. “All the work the municipalities, government, NGOs and volunteers have done on the
biosphere designation. It was a huge amount of work but it’s paid off. “It’s our job now to keep moving ahead, he said.
