COPA for Kids recruits Junior Aviators for a day Megan Lockhart Staff Reporter
COPA for Kids held its seventh annual event this weekend at the Flagstaff Regional Airport. The flights are put on by COPA, the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association, in order to help get youth interested in aviation. Weather conditions in the area made it impossible to host the event on Saturday morning, as originally planned. The sun came out on Sunday, April 26, as did eight area pilots, and one pilot who flew in all the way from Calgary.
A total of 35 kids between the ages of eight and 17 registered to be come Junior Aviators for the morning, though several who had pre-registered were unable to attend due to the scheduling change. The kids were able to learn a bit about the small planes on site, taking a walk around to see the exterior before getting buckled in and seeing how some of the controls worked. The content of the flights varied, as some kids were able to fly over their houses, and some took more general tours of the area. See COPA Spring 6
The Flagstaff Regional Airport, seen here from above, and volunteer pilots from the Iron Creek Flying Club, hosted the area's seventh COPA for Kids event this weekend. Kids from ages eight to 17 were able to participate and go for free rides in small planes.

Snow today, gone tomorrow; who cares when you’re having fun!
Just when the puddles in the fields were close to drying up, snow on the weekend in many areas of the province deposited much-needed moisture. While these two don’t seem to care whether it’s snowing or raining outside, most of us would prefer to see only rain from here on in!

Spring season means return of pesky rodent There is no denying gophers are cute, but they can be very bothersome. While they are pretty important animals, they can drive a homeowner to distraction with their constant digging and mound-building. However, on the plus side, gophers do till the earth and aerate the soil. As well, gophers are an important food source for other animals such as foxes and weasels. But they can prove very problematic to homeowners when it comes to destroying lawns and gardens. Gophers are strict vegetarians and will invade many a lawn because the landscaping offers a tasty buffet of delights. The small animals live on the leaves, the flowers, the stems, the roots...all of the plant. And most yards contain some great menu items. A back yard is very tempting to the busy critters because the soil is

soft and easy to build endless tunnels from which the gophers can eat the roots of all plants. According to one website which details the habits and movement of gophers, one gopher can produce 10-30 mounds of dirt a month ranging in volume from a glass full to a gallon. The site
says that when digging, the gophers find stuff. “If it is edible, they eat it. If not, they chew right through many things they encounter underground. This includes phone or other utility lines and irrigation lines. Small rocks they carry out and add to the dirt pile (Hope you don't hit

If you have raised tunnel mounds running through your yard, that is the work of a mole. If it is a gopher you will have one or more mounds of soil heaped up where the gopher has an entrance. Gophers seek roots,
and destroy the plants or trees in the process. As they move about underground, they throw up mounds of dirt which are very unattractive and can cause more serious issues. The tunnels the gophers dig create holes and other weak spots in the ground that can twist or even break ankles and legs of humans and large animals, such as horses. Ridding a yard of gophers can prove a real challenge. The use of

Weather-related joint pain often common during Spring joints and muscles with damp weather, rheumatologists are often asked why achy joints and muscles tend to ache that much more in damp weather. Dropping barometric pressure, which occurs when rain is on the horizon, may cause tissues to swell. Swelling tissues in already inflamed joints can add to pain, especially if these tissues push into nerves and muscles in the
Early spring is often marked by wind and rain that precedes the more welcoming warmth synonymous with late spring and summer. Rainy, damp conditions may be great for homeowners looking to revitalize their lawns and gardens, but such conditions can wreak havoc on achy joints, especially for those who experience arthritis. Although there is no concrete proof to link aching
area. According to a survey published in the journal Pain, two-thirds of people living with chronic joint pain believe there is a link between their pain and weather changes. Changes in humidity and temperature also may play a role, affecting pressure all over the body. Joint pain may not be the only effect, as some people get headaches as well. While spring may be a painful time of year for
sufferers of joint pain, there are steps such men and women can take to alleviate some of those aches. When rainy or cooler temperatures loom, try these ideas. · See your doctor. If your pain is growing more severe, consult with your doctor, who may be able to develop a plan that helps you deal with the changing seasons more comfortably. Doctors may suggest chiropractic
manipulation, or physical therapy, or prescribe pain medications. · Exercise painful joints. Rely on low-impact exercises, such as walking or swimming, to loosen up stiffness in the body. Loosening up and stretching before any intense
workouts is recommended. Rainy weather may be in the forecast, and that can mean increased pain for those with achy joints. Working with a medical professional can help take the "ouch" out of seasonal changes.

Spring yard cleanup doesn’t have to go to the landfill Evan McDonald Flagstaff Waste Mgmt
It is that time of year again, with the trees beginning to bud and the frost leaving the ground, where we can finally get out of the house and begin to clean up our lawns and gardens. During the spring and fall season, yard and garden wastes contribute more than one-third of the material deposited in our local landfill and contribute heavily to the
production of methane gases in a landfill, through a process called anaerobic decomposition. Anaerobic decomposition occurs when there is no oxygen present during the breakdown of organic materials and results in the production of the by-product methane, a greenhouse gas 25 - 30 times more impactful than carbon dioxide as a heat-trapping greenhouse gas. Landfilling of lawn and

garden wastes produces the ideal conditions for this process to occur. Composting, on the other hand, which when turned properly, becomes exposed to oxygen (aerobic) during its decomposition process, does not produce methane. Composting can easily be done in everyone’s back yard and requires only a few simple steps.
1. Begin your compost pile on bare or worked up soil. This allows the organisms required for composting (such as worms) to make their way into your compost, helping to aerate. 2. Lay down a base of twigs or straw. This base will allow for oxygen to make its way into the pile and water to drain out. See COMPOST Spring 14

Local greenhouse offers hanging basket options Jaimee Russnak Staff Reporter
Spring is the time for many to plant vegetable gardens and flower beds, and that means an especially busy time of year for Connie and Jason Petruk, and their family, as they ready their local greenhouse for the business this season brings. Helen’s Vegetables and Flowers, located about 15 miles north of Viking on Alberta Township Road 500 and Range
Road 124, offers an abundance of tomato, pepper, and herb varieties as well as vegetable starters to put in the garden. “We also have over 30 different hanging flower basket combinations to choose from. “Our greenhouse carries a wide selection of individual flowers and fillers to take home for the flowerbed,” says Connie Petruk. She explains the family-operated greenhouse
has been in business since 1985, originally owned and operated by Jason’s parents, Victor and Helen, hence the name. “They continued with the business for 24 years. It was then passed down to us in 2009. “We decided that we would take control of the business as Helen and Victor were getting older and could no longer run the business on their own.”
Pictured in the family photo are, from left, Alissa Nadeau, Connie Petruk, Jason Petruk, Amanda Petruk, Kyla Nadeau, Shaina Nadeau, and Shaina's boyfriend Andrew Obrien.
Running the greenhouse is something she says she enjoys for a number of reasons. First, it means family time. “My four girls, Shaina, Alissa, Kyla and Amanda help us out a lot with the greenhouse work. “Whether it's filling the pots with dirt, or even transplanting the plants to larger pots, they're always there to help mom and dad out.” Another thing she loves about operating the greenhouse is seeing her work “all the way through.” She says, “I get to see those tiny little seeds throughout all the stages of its growth. From germination to maturation when we pass them on to our lovely customers, they require our full attention.” The family is looking forward to serving their customers as they get underway with spring planting. The greenhouse will open May 6.

Spring arrives at Wipf’s Greenhouse
Later this summer when the flower planters which decorate Viking’s main street are in full bloom and looking so lovely, you can thank Wipf’s Greenhouse. Rosa and Mike Wipf and three of their five children operate the greenhouse which is located northeast of Daysland and even though it is early spring, Rosa is busy creating hanging baskets, tending bedding plants and getting her large outdoor garden ready for planting. In addition to creating the flower planter arrangements for the main streets of Viking and Daysland, Rosa attends the weekly Farmers’ Market in Viking selling hanging baskets, bedding plants and a little later in the growing season, fresh produce from the garden. Her talents don’t end there. Rosa bakes, sews, puts up preserves, creates
made-to-order fortral rugs all while spending endless hours in the family greenhouse. “I know. It is busy. Why do I do it? I love it. And the children and Mike are a great help. I didn’t know this spring would be this busy - I must be a bit crazy,” Rosa laughs as she talks with ease about how she spends her days. Husband Mike drives transport truck and, in between hauls, helps with the greenhouse and the gardening. Rosa said she is looking forward to a good crop yield this year and is pleased at the progress being made by all the greenhouse plants. Wipf’s Greenhouse is located Northeast of Daysland on Range Road 153, Township Road 460 and is open Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The greenhouse is closed Wednesdays. You can contact Rosa at 780-385-8389.

Compost Continued from P11 3. Moist, Dry, Moist, Repeat. Place compost in layers of alternating dry (leaves, dried grass, wood chips) and wet (food scraps, grass clippings). 4. One green for every two browns. A good mix of green high nitrogen organics (grass clippings, food scraps) to brown high carbon organics (sawdust, wood chips, dried leaves, needles) will help produce the best diet for the important composting microorganisms.
5. Keep the compost moist. Moist, but not wet compost is the most active. 6. Cover your pile. Either through the use of a store bought composter or with things such as plastic sheeting. Covering helps keep in heat and moisture, both of which speed up composting. 7. Rotate, Rotate, Rotate. It is important to turn the pile every few weeks to add oxygen and keep the pile aerobically decomposing. Composting can be completed in as little as two months if done properly.
Also, a well-maintained compost pile should have little to no foul odour. If you don’t want to compost in your backyard or don’t have the time, there are other options available. One option is called “Grass Cycling” and the premise is simple – leave the grass where you found it, on your lawn. Grass clippings provide the nutrients your lawn needs as well as helping to retain the much needed moisture. It can easily be done by mowing just slightly more frequently and taking off only about one-
third of the grass length with each cut. Care should be taken to only mow when the grass is dry to prevent clumping and to use a sharp blade on your lawn mower. For more information on grass cycling you can visit the City of Edmonton’s Go Bagless campaign online. Many municipalities offer grass recycling for residents, like Flagstaff. These seasonal bins accept grass clippings and yard wastes, but not sticks and branches, pet and animal wastes, or general garbage of any nature.
Plastic bags should also stay out of the compost bins, but plastic or

Garden-inspired decor brightens spaces and mood Many homeowners take up gardening to transform their homes with beautiful flowers and foliage, while others do so to yield fresh fruits and vegetables. But gardening can be more than just a weekend hobby. In fact, it may be especially beneficial for homeowners to surround themselves with more plants and natural decor, whether in the yard or in the home. Studies have indicated that gardening can be good for the mind and body. In addition to improving mood and reducing stress, plant life and gardening also may help people have a more hopeful outlook on life. If reaping the benefit of a beautiful landscape is not reason enough to get into gardening, elevating your mood and coping with depression or illness may be even further motivation to start developing your green thumb. Home-design trends seem to be following suit, offering individuals more opportunities to surround themselves with potentially therapeutic plants. Explore these emerg-
ing and established garden décor trends to try in and around your home. · Living wall planters: A living wall planter can add greenery to any décor without taking up floor or table space. Ideal for outdoor structures, these planters also can be used indoors if you safeguard against leaks and dripping. A living wall planter is a framed device that houses plants in a manner that enables them to be vertically mounted to a wall surface. While there are commercially available models, you can create your own design and paint or stain it to match the existing décor. Use a soilfree potting substrate to avoid the mess that regular soil may create. · Combining fish with gardening: Enjoy the best of two relaxing worlds by installing a water feature in your yard. Garden retailers offer ready-made kits that can make fast work of establishing a pond or other water feature in the backyard. Otherwise, there are plenty of water garden companies and installers who can suggest a design and put in your

desired water features. Add fish suitable for outdoor life to your pond. These include koi and certain goldfish varieties. Game fish are discouraged because they can destroy pond plants. If an outdoor pond is more maintenance than you desire, consider an indoor aquarium with a combination of fish and live aquarium plants. · Creative furniture designs: Maybe you're a person who appreciates the unique and whimsical? Tables, benches, and chairs can be built with planting channels that enable you to have greenery and garden décor in one piece. Envision a picnic table with a cutout down the center for a thin row of plants or decorative grasses. This is a project the entire family can get behind, as the more creative ideas the better. · Improved outdoor lighting: People who like to spend time in their gardens and yards may not want to be limited by sunrise and sunset. By incorporating different lighting sources, you can create a retreat that is welcoming at any hour. Although flood lights and overhead lights can illuminate a space, con-
sider ambient and decorative lighting to create the desired ambiance. · Functional fire pits and places: A blazing fire creates a cozy spot to gather on chilly evenings, but fire pits and fireplaces also can be used as impromptu cooking spots for s'mores or frankfurters on a stick. You can purchase a stand-alone fire pit from any number of retailers or build your own with patio pavers and fire bricks to line the interior of the fire pit. Outdoor fireplaces require more work, and you want to hire a mason to ensure proper installation. · Enjoyable yard additions: While plants and seating may take centre stage, some people still want to have fun in their yards. There's an increased demand for yard designs and décor that can put the fun in backyard living. Bocce courts, ring- or horseshoe-toss setups, as well as bean bag-toss boards, can be incorporated into landscape designs, giving you yet another reason to spend a few hours in the great outdoors, where you can experience a few healthy laughs in the process. Life cheats - The many uses of vinegar around your home Check your kitchen pantry and you will probably find a bottle of vinegar. While this substance can add much-needed tang to favourite recipes and even improve the leavening function of some baking ingredients, its power extends far beyond the kitchen. Many are surprised upon learning how much vinegar can do. A sour-tasting liquid that contains acetic acid, vinegar can be used as a cleaning product and an influential ingredient in many recipes. Vinegar also is relatively inexpensive, making it a cost-effective home staple. If you are ready to get more from that versatile vinegar in your kitchen pantry, explore the following ways to put it to use. Cleaning Vinegar is an effective cleaning fluid, perhaps best known for producing streak-free windows. Vinegar also can dissolve dirt from painted walls and remove grime from woodwork. By boiling 1/4 cup of white distilled vinegar in the microwave with a cup of water, you can loosen splattered-on food and deodorize the appliance. Vinegar also can be used to deodorize garbage disposals, coffee makers, and kitchen drains. It's an effective means to removing pet odors from carpeting as well. Around the bathroom, use vinegar to remove soap scum film from shower doors and tile surfaces. You can remove stubborn toilet bowl stains as well. Corrosion and hard water can clog showerheads, and by soaking the shower nozzle in vinegar overnight, you can dislodge any material. You can rely on vinegar when cleaning up around your home office as well. Vinegar can help clean sticky scissor blades or remove ballpoint-pen marks from surfaces. A vinegar-and-water solution can be used to clean keyboards and other electronic equipment.
Apply with a damp cloth rather than spraying the solution directly onto the electronics. Lawn and garden Vinegar makes an effective weed deterrent and can kill grass that grows between the cracks on sidewalks and driveways. Acid-loving plants, such as rhododendrons or azaleas, can benefit from a little vinegar mixed in when watering. If you want to keep ants at bay, use vinegar when cleaning outdoor patio furniture or spray it around areas that are susceptible to ant infestations. You may find the ants steer clear of the smell. Health and beauty Some people say that vinegar can be used as an appetite suppressant. Using it on prepared foods may help you to eat less. Vinegar is handy for relieving the pains associated with sunburns
and jellyfish stings. Dot irritated areas with vinegar to relieve pain and itching. Because vinegar can act as an antibacterial, gargling it can alleviate some throat ailments. Even if it can't prevent illness, a vinegar gargle can soothe throat soreness. Apple cider vinegar
also may help soothe an upset stomach. Use two teaspoons of the vinegar to one cup of water. Some people have used vinegar to soften skin and remove corns from feet. It also may dissolve warts. Be sure to check with a doctor before using vine-
gar to verify its safety with regard to your particular situation. In addition to each of these uses, vinegar is
handy in the laundry room, helping to remove stains and rinse detergents from fabrics more easily.
