CW Sears says goodbye to Grade 4 Students from all three sections of Grade 4 pose for a group picture together as they move on to Tofield School in fall.

Students from Grade 4 graduated last month as they headed into their summer break. It was the last time they would walk the portals of CW Sears, which had been their space for the past few years.

The Grade 4 farewell was attended by all staff

and parents, celebrating all three sections – M, S, and W. “Our Grade 4 farewell was truly a wonderful culmination to this school year,” said Principal Adam Madsen. “ Our gym was full of parents, family members, friends, and guests celebrating the accomplishments of our outgoing Grade 4 classes.

“It was energizing to be able to host the event in person this year and we wish all of our Grade 4 students success as they leave our school and go on to Tofield School in the fall!”

Alberta UCP leadership race heats up Moush John Tofield Mercury

After a new poll was released on Sunday, July 24 by Leger, who recently surveyed Alber-

tans about their voting intentions and perspectives on the UCP leadership race, it seems to be a three person race.

In the UCP leadership race, the greatest pro-

portion of UCP supporters feel Danielle Smith (22 per cent), Brian Jean (20 per cent) or Travis Toews (15 per cent) would make the best UCP leader.

This is followed by just two per cent support each for former cabinet Minister Rebecca Schulz, Former Alberta Liberal leader Raj Sherman, and MLA Todd Loewen.

Former cabinet minister Rajan Sawhney had zero per cent support, while former cabinet minister Leela Aheer did not register any support in the poll.

The poll reported that at this point, none of the three front running candidates are showing any regional or demographic areas of strength.

UCP supporters most strongly feel that the new leader of the UCP should have a clear plan to get Alberta’s economy on track and growing. That was supported

by 42 per cent, followed by 21 per cent Albertans who feel that a clear plan to rebuild important services such as healthcare and education in the province should be a priority for UCP leadership.

A clear commitment to conservative values of freedom and respect was third on the list supported by 18 per cent Albertans.

In a statement released on Monday, July 25, Danielle Smith who is leading the poll said, “It is clear that my proposed Alberta Sovereignty Act has thus far been the central issue of the UCP leadership campaign.

“Tens of thousands of Albertans have embraced the idea of actually standing up to

Ottawa’s attacks against us, rather than usual ineffective letter writing campaigns and complaining.”

She added that it has been both “exciting” and “heartwarming” to see hope restored to so many in the province, and she wants them to know how much their faith and confidence in this initiative strengthens her personal resolve to see it through. “ U n s u r p r i s i n g l y, many in the media and establishment do not support the Alberta Sovereignty Act and have turned to the tried and tested methods of fearmongering and disinformation to discredit the idea. Unfortunately, some of my fellow UCP candidates may have fallen into their trap!”

Smook commits to focusing on rural communities Moush John Tofield Mercury

In his ongoing campaign to be the UCP candidate in Camrose constituency, Tofield resident Kevin Smook released among other priorities he would like to bring to the table, his commitment to growing and sustaining rural communities.

In a statment released

on Monday, July 25, Smook announced his announced his commitment to address the concerns he has heard from rural constituents. These include issues such unpaid taxes to rural municipalities, rural crime, medical transportation, and supporting agricultural societies.

According to the Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA), rural

municipalities cumulatively face a $253.7 million shortfall from unpaid oil and gas taxes with over $131 million in taxes written off since 2015. Camrose County alone wrote off $397,000 in taxes in 2018 with that number climbing in 2021.

The UCP government has taken action in the form of Bill 77, the Municipal Government

Smook believes an education program is needed to explain the powers to municipalities, many of which have no expertise in seizing oil and gas properties, as well as informing them about the process of filing a statement of concern with

the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER).

If these educational tools still aren’t enough, he is prepared to ‘go to bat’ for rural municipalities, by asking for the AER to be strengthened in its ability to decline new licenses to those companies with unpaid taxes. The Minister in charge has indicated a willingness to explore options such as these.

Another issue he has

heard touring the constituency is that rural crime is pervasive, with some small-town stores being targeted repeatedly and multiple farm operators relaying stories of chasing off criminals themselves.

“People respect their local police,” Smook added. “They know they have a difficult job catching offenders but on the whole they seem confident in their abili-

The Alberta MP Rural Crime Task Force report, which was supported by UCP MLAs, notes “the majority of these crimes are committed by repeat offenders and by persons who have been released by the ‘revolving door’ justice system.”

Smook believes the provincial government needs to push the federal government for changes including: filling federal justice vacancies (2017 vacancies took until 2020 to be filled), reforming early release from court-imposed sentences to discretionary parole for repeat offenders, and stronger penalties for property crimes.

The UCP government expanded the number of provincial court justices earlier this year. An Alberta Parole Board was also created to help hold repeat offenders to account.

He said that he is also interested in learning how the Bashaw Community Wellness Program – which sees the local RCMP, school, adult learning, support services, and other agencies cooperate – could be adapted for other communities to address mental health concerns that may contribute to rural crime.

While touring the area, Smook has also

heard of issues with medical transportation, both in the form of ambulances and getting rural residents, especially seniors, to appointments in urban centers.

“If an ambulance in Hardisty is dispatched, the nearest backup might be 45 minutes away,” said Smook, noting that this was a concern he’d heard across communities.

The issue isn’t unique to rural communities, either, as a Red Deer woman requiring treatment in late June was unable to access an ambulance for transfer to St. Mary’s in Camrose, with her mother driving her in a private vehicle instead.

He wants the province to sit down with stakeholders to create a plan to combat ambulance and paramedic shortages. Between August and October of 2021 Camrose was left without a staffed ambulance three times according to the union representing paramedics.

Loose Ends: Sorry! Wrong Number

A few days ago I noticed for the first time that the zero button on our landline phone has OPER on it which I thought could only mean

Operator. Wow, was that still a thing? If I punch it, who will answer? SIRI? Darth Vader telling me in his ventilator voice that this number is no longer in service? Lily Tomlin doing one of her Ernestine comedy bits?

I should note here that we’ve only had this phone – purchased in Camrose because we wanted a cordless, all the better not to truss ourselves up like a Christmas turkey in an unruly long cord –for some-

where between fifteen or twenty years. In that time I have never once noticed the OPER button; obviously anyone I needed to call was in The Book (not to be confused with the Good Book, although I’m sure the Man in charge of it has all of our numbers, plus the stars and black marks that accompany them); my address book, and later, my contacts/favourites lists for computer and then my phone. Also obvious is my gnat-sized

attention span, a talent that has never been on my resume.

Of course I was reminded of an old friend of mine; I’ll call her Jean since that is her name.

Jean was one of the real live operators who manned the switchboard at our local Telephone Exchange. It was housed in a small red brick building on Main Street, behind a fence filled with a Karaganda hedge. I sometimes visited Jean there, watching as she

deftly plugged and unplugged jacks amid red and green flashing lights.

It was magical to watch; I admired her ability to know which plug went where without cutting anyone’s call short. I think what she liked best about her job was the long breaks between calls that allowed her time to read her paperback and for another coffee.

And of course my curiosity got the best of me and I had to punch the

OPER button. Imagine my surprise when a pleasant voice said, TELUS operator, how may I help you? Not Ernestine (she didn’t snort). A real live person!

I was so caught off guard I almost hung up. Instead I apologized, mumbled something about miss-dialing – do we still call it that? – and then hung up. Oops! Another black mark next to our number. Because only a real duh-unce could miss-dial a zero.

The Tofield RCMP responded to 41 calls for services between July 17–24. Included within the calls were the following:1 Abandoned vehicle; 3 Animal Calls; 1 Assist to General Public; 1 Assault; 2 Break and Enters; 1 Coroner’s Act; 2 False Alarms; 1 Family Orders & Agreements Enforcement Assistance Act; 1 Fire; 1 Firearms Act; 1 Mental Health Act; 7 Motor Vehicle violations; 2 Impaired Driving Offences; 4 Other Provincial Statues; 1 Possession of Property obtain by crime; 1 Suspicious Person/Vehicle; 2 Theft from mail; 1 Theft of Motor Vehicle; 3 Collisions Reports; and 5 Wellbeing checks.

On July 17, Tofield RCMP responded to a call of assistance to a person walking on the highway and being in danger

of being hit by passing vehicles. Patrol was made, and found involved person and provided a ride to the nearest hotel. No offences committed.

On July 17, Tofield RCMP received a call of possible attempt of fraud: community member reported a suspicious phone call from an unknown male on a private number claiming he was going to bring her medication today and started

asking questions like DOB. Community member never gets medications on Monday. No further details available On July 17, community member reported his fence to compound was cut. Only the top two lines were actually cut.

RCMP conducted patrols to the area. No further evidence available. File concluded.

On July 17, community member reported of a dog in distress. RCMP re-

Looking Forward MLA JACKIE LOVELY Camrose Constituency

Albertans have so much to look forward to right now.

Our economy is booming, our budget is balanced, and our taxes are low. Unfortunately, however, many families in the Camrose region and across Alberta are struggling with high costs due to inflation right now. That is why our United Conservative government is working so hard to make life more affordable at this important time in our economic recovery.

As you probably know, we are extending the gas tax cut for gasoline, diesel, and farm fuel. Countless residents have told me how much this tax cut has helped them during these challenging economic times, so I’m pleased it is being extended until at least the end of September. This is just one

way we are making life affordable.

Another way we are making life more affordable is by extending the electricity rebate for an additional three months. This program will now provide $50 rebates for a total of six months – July to December – amounting to $300 in rebates for over 1.9 million homes, farms, and small businesses. Many Albertans are starting to receive this series of rebates this month.

These are just a few things we are doing right now, but I want you to know that we are continuing to work on new programs and initiatives to fight inflation and make life more affordable for working families. I look forward to updating you on this soon.

As you may know, as part of Budget 2022, our government announced $27.4 million in Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program funding for 45 new municipal transportation infrastructure projects across the province.

This past week, more of these projects were announced, and Camrose will be getting three culvert replacements for a total

of just over $1 million.

We know this funding is critical to supp o r t i n g municipalities like the Camrose Constituency in developing and maintaining key local transportation infrastructure to promote economic growth and improve travel for residents and industry. I look forward to updating you on this soon.

As always, I want to pay a special thanks to all our farmers, ranchers,

and agriculture producers who are working so hard right now. My heart breaks for those who have experienced hail.

As you may know, our government recently challenged Ottawa’s ridiculous proposal to put warning labels on ground meat, which would have negatively impacted Alberta producers. I’m pleased to report the federal government has backed down and will exempt

ground meat and poultry from its proposed stricter nutrition labelling regulations, set to be in place by 2026.

Eight straight months of job growth, 200,000 new jobs, and the lowest unemployment since 2015 means our province is coming back stronger than ever.

As we celebrate this new Alberta Advantage, I hope you and your family are having a wonderful summer!

On July 18, Tofield RCMP responded to a domestic disturbance in the community of Ryley.

Involved persons were engaged in a heated argument. No physical contact between those involved. All persons had settle down when police arrived. No further police action required. File concluded.

On July 18, Tofield RCMP received a call of an impaired driver, driving a 1500 dark grey Ram heading towards Sherwood Park. RCMP members made an immediate patrol but was not able to locate the involved vehicle.

On July 19, Tofield RCMP responded to a call of impaired driving on Range Rd. 205. Vehicle ran off the road. Vehicle description was that of a silver van with roof rack.

On July 18, Tofield RCMP responded to a call of mischief at the Tofield Post Office. Offender was yelling at staff and left the Post Office without further incident.

It last seen heading in the direction of Sherwood Park. Information has been passed onto to Sherwood Park RCMP to follow up.

On July 19, Tofield RCMP responded to a call of a small goat wandering into traffic on Hwy. 14 east of Range Rd. 183. Patrol was made, goat was gone on arrival.

On July 19, Tofield RCMP responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle near Range Rd. 195 that of a black Chevy truck. No other details were available. RCMP made several patrols to the area, but found no sign of vehicle. File concluded.

On July 19, Tofield RCMP conducted a well being check on an individual who has not been in contact with close asso-

ciates. RCMP members located involved person and ascertained that everything was okay. No further police action required.

On July 20, Tofield RCMP immediately responded to a domestic violence complaint in the community of Ryley. Involved persons were emotionally distraught.

On July 21, Tofield RCMP responded to a call of a train crossing malfunction on Range Rd. 512. Problem was referred to CN Railway.

On July 21, Tofield RCMP responded to two calls for a well being check on an individual that was lying on the road without a shirt. Involved person was located by police, however there were no issues, and the person wanted a ride

to Viking.

On July 21, Tofield RCMP responded to a call of a break and enter at a local business. Culprit(s) broken into the building and stole a side by side ATV. Description: Kawa-saki KAF400, 2018, black in colour. This matter is still under investigation.

On July 22, Tofield RCMP responded to a call of an abandoned motor vehicle on Range Rd. 175. Investigation revealed the vehicle was not stolen to date. This file is still under investigation.

On July 22, the Tofield RCMP responded to a call of a break and enter to an out building on rural property. The only item stolen was a snowmobile fuel tank and possibly fuel from a tractor.

File is still under investi-

gation. Finger print section engaged.

On July 22, the Tofield RCMP responded to a call of an abandoned truck. It was revealed this vehicle was stolen out of Camrose. File is still under investigation.

On July 23, Tofield RCMP responded to a call of an impaired driver near Range Rd. 200, driving a yellow Impala. No further details were available for members to respond and locate.

On July 23, the Tofield RCMP responded to a call of a residential alarm.

Alarm was false.

On July 23, Tofield RCMP responded to a report of suspicious vehicle and persons near Township Rd. 504. Members patrolled the area but were not able to locate vehicle.

Star Residents of Sunshine Villa Moush John Tofield Mercury

Sunshine Villa features a star resident each month and for the month of June it was Joseph Voigtlin, while for the

month of July it is Lillian Reum.

Joseph Voigtlin was born just south east of Tofield on July 29, 1927.

He lived on the family farm for 86 years before moving to Sunshine

Villa. He has farmed until his university graduation in Education in 1969.

Voigtlin has fond memories of those years commuting from the farm to university, and

He taught at the Ryley School for 19 years before transferring to Tofield School for a short time before his early retirement in 1989.

After that he subbed for a Grade 6 class for a short time.

He served for many years on the Mennonite School Board of Education, which offered him

many travel opportunities in the USA. He also taught computer accounting (Simply accounting) at the Camrose Lutheran College, now Augustana University, until 1999.

He was the youngest of the four siblings, with one brother and two sisters.

Voigtlin fondly remembers going skating with his wife on their 46th wedding anniversary at the ice palace in West Edmonton Mall.

In their late 60s they enjoyed it so much that they began going to the seniors’ skating sessions.

Both her parents were from Scotland, and got married in Vancouver in 1912, before moving to Alberta.

After her sisters left home, she moved to Tofield, and later on to Calgary for Bible School.

In the summer and fall she did house cleaning and babysitting for working parents.

Reum married Daniel, and they lived in Ryley for a while, raising two sons and three daughters.

Looking back, she recalls an incident of falling into a barrel of water that her dad had collected from a nearby creek.

“My dad had a big wooden barrel and that day he had just returned from the creek with it full of water,” she said. “I was playing with my nieces around the barrel and realized the floating lid would bob up and down if we pushed on it.

We had fun pushing it up and down until I fell in, and hoping for some sympathy I told my sister but she laughed and laughed.”

Tofield Museum’s featured exhibit is Tofield’s history

ABOVE: During 1907 the GTP surveyed the area north west of the present day school. The firm, Crafts & Lee and Gallinger purchased the adjoining land. This land was surveyed and divided into lots. Anticipating the arrival of the train, Tofield moved from the #1 site to the new #2 site. More businesses were added here as well as a residential section. Growth continued and Tofield was declared a village in September of 1907. LEFT TOP: This is Tofield’s first Main Street. In 1906 the Grand Trunk Pacific began surveying the area to continue the transcontinental railway. This survey took place 1-2 miles east of the present day town. Because Tofield moved three times in three years this is often referred to Tofield #1. The small log building to the left is the first Tofield Post Office built in 1897. Each year the Tofield Historical Museum Society members come together to plan a featured exhibit, and this year after the pandemic they were able to do the same, and decided to focus on the town and its roots and history.

“I had shared in one of the FB local groups, Tofield Today, a little bit of Tofield’s history, and after the amazing response and overwhelmingly great reaction I thought it would be a good idea to have Tofield as the featured exhibit this season,” said Lorraine McNeely, Museum curator.

“There is a large table at the entrance of the Museum and each year we try to feature a different theme. On the front grounds of the Museum we have been able obtain a shovel that had been used during the time of the Tofield Coal Co. to display a historical artifact.”

McNeely fondly recalled that her love for history and all things of the past is inspired by her dad, Peter Korobko, who always had a book in his hand and in-

stilled a love for history in her.

“I was raised on a farm south of Tofield and completed school at the Tofield School, and it’s amazing to see how many former classmates and former teachers still live in the area!” she added. “In recent years there have been many people searching for their family histories. The Tofield Historical Society has set up files on families and businesses in the area. These families are also willing to share information on their family research, which allows us to keep the records up to date.”

McNeely said that the pandemic impacted the Museum like other nonprofits and she is hoping that this year more people can come and visit and support the Museum’s initiatives.

With the Museum celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2021, she hopes that younger people will take an interest in the history of the town and help in building it up.

“We’re very thankful to all the volunteers who put in so much of their time and efforts into making the Museum into what it is today.”

He had many general roles including being a plain cloths investigator for eight years. In 2000 he joined the RCMP and did two tours. One in East Timor and the other in Afghanistan.

He later went on to be a facilitator/instructor for five years at the RCMP police academy. He has transferred throughout Canada including Cardston AB, Gillam Manitoba, Lac La Biche AB, and various detachments in Nova Scotia. Sgt. Charles Brown looks forward to serving the community of Tofield for the next three years.

An interest Sgt. Brown has is studying the word of God and being involved with people on a spiritual level along with teaching if the opportunity arises.

County approves $2,500 Canola crops at risk due to sponsorship for upcoming lingering cold in spring Bruce Stampede Patricia Harcourt

Patricia Harcourt Prior to the Bruce Stampede taking place from July 29-31, Beaver County approved a request from the Bruce Sports and Stampede Association for a sponsorship donation.

At the July 6 meeting of county council, a request of $2,500 from the association was granted as an event sponsorship for the stampede. The sponsorship will be given each year for the next five years.

Council agreed to add the Bruce Sports & Stampede Association to the annual sponsorship list and approve an annual sponsorship in the amount of $2,500 for the years 20222027.

“The Bruce Stampede has stood the test of time,” said Reeve Kevin Smook, following the unanimous vote in favour of the sponsorship request for the next five years.

The Bruce Stampede has been held since 1914 and this year will take place from July 29-31.

The Stampede was founded by a group of pioneers who wished to promote the community based on a tradition of rodeo in the area.

The professional rodeo is held on the Sunday of what is a three-day stampede, and is known as the longest consecutive one-day professional rodeo in Canada.

“Cowboys and cowgirls from all over North America compete for top dollars in each event,” states the association’s directors in their sponsorship letter.

The winnings earned go towards the

CFR and NFR, and sponsorships makes it possible.

“While the Stampede draws out the local public to enjoy the action, it also attracts tourists and becomes a hub of activity for home comers.”

This year’s Stampede will use the major stock contractor Northcott and Yule Rodeo Ltd. with some of the top broncs and bulls performing.

The Stampede has 108 years of history and success under its western belt, and continues to outperform as “the greatest little rodeo” in Canada.

Farmers in the county and across Western Canada are finding their canola crops wanting with reports of missing flowers and empty stems.

Weather conditions early in the crop year has affected flowering and prevented normal pod development, state the Canola Council of Canada, which inspected fields and consulted plant physiologists to make their determination.

“Different stress factors or combinations of stress factors from cold to heat to moisture challenges likely caused similar symptoms in different

areas,” the report stated. Spring in Beaver County was slow in getting started with colder temperatures for ground soil during seeding.

Farmers started off the crop season concerned that the spring rains simply weren’t coming as crops came up slowly from the ground or didn’t grow as expected.

The rains finally came later in the spring and early summer to basically save the day but not before affecting the initial development of some crops.

“Favourable environmental conditions should alleviate the symptoms, but keep in

mind that prolonged stress may require prolonged recovery,” said the canola report.

“Growers should continue to actively manage their crop, basing crop input decisions on economic thresholds, soil test results, and expected return on investment.”

The report also didn’t offer much hope to “fix” the issue more quickly. “We are not aware of any crop protection or fertilizer products that can more quickly alleviate these symptoms,” it stated.

And there have been residents who “have moved on quickly to a higher level of care,” he said, also leaving vacancies.

Hrabec also credited Home Care “for doing a great job,” so more seniors can stay in their own homes longer.

Facility staff will be getting training in mental health care from Alberta Health Services, he added, as Covid creates pressure on mental health as well.

As chair of the Beaver Emergency Services Commission, Hrabec said the fire station in Viking is still waiting on receiving its new rescue unit, and Tofield is waiting for a new tanker. He blamed the recent supply chain problems for this long wait. Viking Fire and Rescue has built a new addition to house its expected rescue unit, which will hopefully arrive in December.

As chair of the Agriculture Service Board, Smook reported that the Iron Creek Colony has opened a seed cleaning plant that “will be in direct competition” with the Beaver County Seed Cleaning Plant at Holden.

At the Holden plant, the new colour sorter has arrived and will be installed in time for the fall influx of seed expected during the harvest season.

Smook also reported that the EMS operating out of Tofield is having a new ambulance shipped which is expected “to arrive soon.”

Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Councillors reported on a mix of topics at their July 6 regular meeting of council.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) praised administration staff for the planning the Rural Municipalities Association’s District 5 Golf Tournament held July 15 at the Coal Creek Golf Resort.

“The project works for the region and is good for the zone,” said Hrabec, who is the District 5 Chair. The event was held in conjunction with Beaver County Victim Services.

“The staff did well,” he said, noting that the zone will be reciprocating with an economic development seminar for councillors in the fall.

Reeve Kevin Smook noted that “municipal leaders from all over” the province were coming to Coal Creek to participate.

At the July 6 meeting, County CAO Kayleena Spiess had predicted a good result for this first such event in the county. “I think it’s going to be a fantastic day,” she said, and an event that would “bring revenue into the county.”

Councillor Dale Pederson (Division 5) expressed concern that farmers in his division were anxious to put up hay in county controlled areas such as ditches. “They are already doing it in the county,” replied Dan Blackie, director of infrastructure.

Smook wondered if mowing was proceeding with the rains received during that time, and Blackie said: “The rain has stopped the graders but not the mowers.”

Pederson reported on his meeting at the Highway 14 Regional Waterline Commission, stating that the BRWSC has purchased another building south of Ryley in which to house its offices.

“The current building (in Ryley) is deemed unsafe,” he said, adding there are “waterline leaks on the main line,” which runs down Highway 14 in the county.

Hrabec said this line was purchased from CU Water Ltd. and wondered about seeking compensation from the original owner for the state of the waterline causing the leaks.

But Pederson said the “time factor” dating back two decades means the commission “couldn’t go back to them,” referring to CU for compensation, although he owned that “engineering errors were possible” in the first place when the line was built.

The county suffered during a severe regional drought in the early 1990s causing reservoirs to start drying up. This resulted in the initial waterline being constructed down the highway for a safer, more dependable water supply for residents.

Smook asked how the water commission was paying for the new building, to which Pederson replied that a loan was being taken out and the building in Ryley would be used for storage purposes.

As chair of the Beaver Foundation, Hrabec reported that the number of seniors living in the foundation’s facilities in the county is down, and he blamed the pandemic.

“All of our facilities are having trouble with vacancies,” he said. “In rural Alberta all over people are scared to move in because of

inspected were not caused by recent insect feeding, despite lygus bugs and other insects being noted in some of the fields,” stated the July 13 report.

However, a warning concerning crops being at high risk for sclerotinia was issued as conditions for its development in many parts of the Prairies are now considered ideal.

Temperatures have to over 30C to slow the development of pathogens, and last year’s drought conditions won’t reduce sclerotinia risk this year. The disease can sleep in the soil for four or more years.

High temperatures are not expected to protect canola crops from developing sclerotinia, however; higher levels of humidity that keep the ground moist all day can also contribute.

With the onset of summer storms farmers are also having to deal with a higher risk of hail damage to the crops.

Range Road 182 and 195 Construction Update The soil stabilizing for the road base with soil cement is now complete.

We will soon be starting the first layer of chip seal and there may be delays as work crews direct traffic in order to work safely. There will be many loose rocks after the chip seal layer is applied and speed limits will be reduced on these roads once opened until the project is complete.

During this construction phase, portions of the road may be closed to allow crews to work safely please use another route, detours will be posted or be cautious when you need to drive through construction zones (local traffic only). Beaver County's goal is to provide a healthy, injury free work environment for all employees, contractors, visitors and general public.

Already this year we have had people exceeding the posted speed limit through our construction zones, endangering staff, contractors and the public.

There are potential hazards to the public and vehicles during the construction process. This can include heavy machinery, dust or mud, road material such as gravel, asphalt coatings and rock chips.

We apologize for the inconvenience that road maintenance and upgrading causes, but the same roads that receive the most traffic also need the most maintenance.

Competition No: 010-2022 The Development Officer is responsible for processing and deciding upon applications for development permits, processing applications for statutory plan amendments, and receiving and processing subdivision applications for the decision of the Subdivision Authority. The incumbent may also provide clerical and technical assistance related to land use development, subdivision, and other planning matters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Accept, process, and decide upon all permitted and discretionary use applications • Prepare subdivision application decisions for signature by the Subdivision Authority • Inspect application sites prior to making a decision • Maintains a development and subdivision application/decision database • With the support of the Community Peace Officer, ensure compliance and enforcement of development decisions, regulations, and approval conditions • Issue compliance certificates • Defend decisions to the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board • Process road closure applications and administer lease of County-owned property • Liaise with safety codes inspection agency regarding coordination of development and safety codes permits, and lead annual audit within the region QUALIFICATIONS: • Certification in Applied Land Use Planning and/or related education, or equivalent experience.

Prior related experience in a Municipal setting is considered an asset.

• Working knowledge of the Municipal Government Act and related regulations and policies. Prior related experience in a Municipal setting is considered an asset.

• Proficient in computer skills (MS Office) and a willingness to learn new technology, as needed.
