Tofield players in Prospects Cup Tofield’s Declan Girard and Hudson Lungal part of 2022 Prospects Cup MOUSH JOHN Editor
Tofield’s Declan Girard and Hudson Lungal who have played and been a part of Tofield Minor Hockey will now be playing in the 2022 Prospects Cup hosted by Hockey Alberta. The Prospects Cup, which was known as PeeWee Prospects earlier, is the first step for players entering into the Team Alberta program. Returning after a twoyear interval because of the pandemic, the tournament will be hosted in May at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer. Both Girard and Hudson had to participate in tryout camps, which had more than 160 kids, from which 40 were selected. Out of this, two teams of 20 will be formed, a process replicated for each of the four zones resulting in eight teams in total. To get ready for the tryouts, Girard said that he attended preparation camps. “I did a prep camp
with Sean Brown through Breakout Hockey, and they helped us prepare both on and off the ice for the process,” he said. “It was very intense and high paced. I also practiced and played with my Spring Hockey team!” According to Girard, he needs to train harder on his skating and to also keep practicing his shooting. “I have a very hard shot and I see the ice well,” he said speaking about some of his skills. “I am also a good team player and encourage my teammates regardless of the situation.” Thrilled that he has made it to the team, his dad Rene Girard said, “Declan has always been very self motivated when it comes to hockey; he is a natural leader and always puts the time and effort in whether he is on the ice or at home working on his skills. “He played U13AA last year in Fort Saskatchewan and I think with that high level of hockey it has helped
him achieve this amazing opportunity.” Hudson Lungal who has been in the local hockey news for an amazing season said he did not attend any camps for the tryouts. “I just keep practicing everyday; I have my own workout routine that I have developed through my winter and spring teams,” Hudson added. “I am more aware of my nutrition and have improved my eating habits so that I can compete at my highest level and enhance my speed.” He said that one of his strengths was to create scoring opportunities for his team, and shooting from inside the offensive zone. His mother, Sarah Lungal said she was proud of how far he has come in the sport. “Through this year he has learned how to push himself to the next level out of his comfort zone. He has learned to be a team player and not be selfish as a player always looking to set the next play up!”
