WELCOME A very Happy New Year to you and welcome to the ninth edition of The Luxury Travel Magazine from Caribtours. When we began sending holidaymakers to the Caribbean in 1979, we featured just one island: Jamaica. Today, we feature luxury resorts around the world, including in the Maldives, Greece, Mexico and Mauritius. We never stop discovering new and exciting places though, and we’re thrilled to introduce some brand new destinations this year. Of course, one of the best things about seeking out the very best destinations and resorts for your holiday of a lifetime is visiting them ourselves; on page 66, you can read about Rebecca’s stay at the elegant 7Pines in Ibiza, while Louise lets us in on her trip to D-Resort Göcek in

Boutique hotels have always been an integral part of the Caribtours story as we’ve always prided ourselves on being able to recommend the lesserknown independent hotels you might not find via an internet search. On page 12, we take a look at some of our favourite boutique boltholes, many of which are featured in our brand new brochure, Our Boutique Collection which is available to order now. SPA AND WELLNESS The 47,000-square-foot Spa at Sandy Lane begins with a stunning marble reception and sweeping staircases leading to the lavishly-appointed treatment suites. Facilities are state-of-the-art and each treatment suite features its own private landscaped garden or hydrotherapy pool. The Sandy Lane spa and wellness package includes a 60-minute full body massage and Bajan scrub per person, lunch for two at The Spa Café, and a full fitness assessment. The assessment will measure your heart rate, lung function, flexibility, strength, endurance and body composition, allowing you to identify your individual needs before being presented with a customised plan by a qualified fitness instructor.

GOLF Sandy Lane offers some of the best golf in the world. Three golf courses include The Old Nine, The Country Club and the world-renowned 7,343-yard Green Monkey, which is carved from a dramatic limestone quarry and is exclusive to Sandy Lane guests. The Clubhouse is luxuriously classic and offers comfortable locker rooms, plus shoe and club rental if desired. The golf carts are fitted with a GPS system which can also be used to order light refreshments. Sandy Lane’s golf package includes passes for The Country Club varying in lengths of three to seven days, depending on length of stay, one round of golf daily per person at The Old Nine, and a lunch for two at The Country Club or Spa Café.

ROMANCE An outstanding setting on the silken sands of the Platinum Coast, atmospheric restaurants and attentive staff ready to cater to your every need make Sandy Lane an ideal location for a romantic Caribbean break, whether you’re on your honeymoon or just spending some quality time with a loved one. Make your stay for two special with a romance package designed to make lasting memories. Upon arrival, you’ll be presented with a bottle of Champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries, and you’ll enjoy a candlelit dinner, 60-minute couple’s massage, 60-minute full body massage per person, a lunch and afternoon tea, turtle trip and Sandy Lane gift per person.

FAMILY Sandy Lane is especially popular with families, particularly during the summer holidays. The Treehouse Club features a playground area and daily activities, and teenagers have their own area, The Den, featuring a lounge with two large-screen TVs and a games room. With Sandy Lane’s family package, up to three children aged 16 yrs and under can share a second room at half the adult cost, they have unlimited use of The Treehouse Club, a gift on arrival, and complimentary dinner for ages 3–12 yrs. CLASSIC

C A R I B B E A N EAST WINDS SAINT LUCIA Mention East Winds to one of our team and watch their eyes light up; this has long been one of our favourites, a place that just embodies what we love about the Caribbean. The hotel’s repeat rate is phenomenal, with many guests well into double figures. The generous all-inclusive offering - and in particular the free-flowing Champagne - ensures that there is a real house party atmosphere, and the Friday beach barbecue is not to be missed. This is not an all-inclusive resort in the conventional sense, with just 30 cottagestyle suites and one very good restaurant. We also love the self-service swim-up pool bar, with a recipe book provided so you can mix up your own cocktails.

7 nights from £2,359 per person sharing a Superior Cottage on All-Inclusive. EXCLUSIVE OFFER: Save 25%.

JAMAICA INN JAMAICA Jamaica Inn has been welcoming the great and the good for nearly 70 years, with past guests including Marilyn Monroe, Princess Margaret and Sir Winston Churchill. This wonderful little hotel retains a real old world charm, and the many repeat guests value the sense of peace and tranquillity. The wonderful staff, some of whom have been working here since the hotel opened in the 1950s, will quickly learn your name and your favourite drink. The elegant suites and cottages are furnished with colonial-era antiques, and instead of a TV you have a private balcony or terrace; the view of the beach and the gently crashing waves is the only show you’ll feel like tuning into.

7 nights from £1,989 per person sharing a Superior Balcony Suite on Room Only. OFFER: Stay 7 Pay 5 + US$150 food & beverage credit.

COCO REEF R E S O RT & S P A TOBAGO They say if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, and Coco Reef has been delighting guests with its laid-back approach to luxury for as long as we can remember. Owner and long-time friend of Caribtours, John Jefferis, together with affable general manager Eric Feniet, have hit upon a winning formula here, combining a beguiling beachfront setting with good old fashioned Caribbean hospitality. The hotel’s private lagoon is fringed by soft white sands, and the traditionally styled rooms are spread amongst ten acres of lush tropical gardens. Repeat clients are greeted by a personalised door plaque hanging outside their room, and Caribtours clients are especially well looked after.

7 nights from £1,299 per person sharing a Superior Garden View Room including breakfast. OFFER: Save 33%.

N I S B E T P L A N TAT I O N B E A C H C L U B NEVIS Nisbet Plantation is steeped in history, originally built as a sugar plantation in 1778 and later the home of Admiral Nelson’s wife, Fanny Nisbet. Nowadays it’s a charming boutique hotel owned by the Dodwell family, who celebrated their 30th anniversary at the helm in 2019. The hotel is centred around the Great House, the only original plantation house in the Caribbean located directly on a beach, and there are just 36 rooms set in cottages scattered around the impeccably-kept grounds. The croquet lawn and an eclectic collection of antiques add to the hotel’s colonial ambience, and the amiable staff extend a warm welcome to both first-time visitors and the many returning guests.

arbados is the jewel in the crown when it comes to Caribbean Isles; with its 70 miles of ethereal white sand and crystal clear waters, it’s the island that really does have it all, offering the perfect balance of mind-body experiences. Whether your holiday mantra is meditative or you prefer a more active break, the Gem of the Caribbean has you covered. In addition to its exquisite beauty, Barbados offers the opportunity to explore its vibrant wildlifeinhabited surroundings, home to an interesting array of wonderful animals. Inquisitive ‘green monkeys’ can be seen all across the island, and lucky travellers may also catch a glimpse of the two native hummingbirds, the Antillean Crested and the Green-Throated Carib, which can often be seen hunting for nectar in the many tropical gardens across the island. If adventure lights your fire, you may want to take to the seas and paddleboard around the island, taking in the views of the distinctive rock formations and unique caves.

Be sure you’ve got your snorkels at the ready and head to Carlisle Bay to dive into the wonderful world beneath the waves, where curious leatherback turtles and an array of marine life welcome you to their watery domain. The natural wonders can also be appreciated from the shores for those who prefer to kick back with a rum in the sun. As a spirit that has coursed through the veins of the island for over 300 years, it’s a drink that’s best enjoyed toe-deep in powdery sand under the shade of a coconut palm. As the sun sets in paradise, Barbados’ bright and lively culture comes to life, as Bajans and tourists alike head for the electric bar scene of St Lawrence Gap, where the rum punch is flowing and the infectious beat of steel drums can be heard long into the night. The Friday night Oistins Fish Fry is a must-visit for seafood fans; it’s where locals can be found grilling and frying fresh swordfish, mahi-mahi, snapper and flying fish.

OUR BOUTIQUE COLLECTION It’s the individual touches and attention to detail that always mean the most to us all, and Our Boutique Collection showcases some of the most beautifully unique, small and stylish hotels in the world. These properties are for those who want to avoid the mass market, and value impeccable service, excellent food and stylish interiors.

L A L U N A GRENADA Grenada is known for its laid-back vibe and lack of big resorts, but this sleepy little island can do chic and sophisticated too. Laluna draws on influences from across the globe, with Balinese-style accommodation and authentic Italian cuisine, a nod to the Calabrian roots of the hotel’s owners. The beachfront restaurant is complemented by an extensive wine cellar, with vintages plucked from small, artisan vineyards around Italy. Service is warm and informal, and the hotel tends to attract a younger clientele than others on the island. The cute cottages each have their own plunge pool, which makes it particularly popular with honeymooners, and the secluded location appeals to A-listers looking to escape from the public eye for a week or two. The fantastic Wellness Centre is another big draw, with complimentary daily yoga classes, full moon meditation sessions and Asian-inspired treatments. As well as the 16 suites and cottages, the owners have recently added a collection of stunning villas, set apart from the main hotel on top of a bluff. Villas range from three to five bedrooms, and each has a private infinity pool, a great option for a larger family or a group of friends.

BARBADOS English country house elegance meets Bajan beach chic at this ever-popular west coast hotel. Dining is a particularly strong suit at Cobblers Cove thanks to the award-winning Camelot restaurant, with its lovely seafront setting and fresh catch of the day. We also love the veranda bar, the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail, though beware of the signature Cobblers Cooler, which contains six measures of rum! Recent enhancements, including a reimagining of the Great House by Soane Britain, have brought the interiors up to date while staying true to the hotel’s classic style. Regular visitors will also note the new and improved gym and beauty salon, along with an expanded sundeck.

NEVIS Admiral Lord Nelson married Fanny Nisbet at Montpelier Plantation back in 1787, and it’s still an incredibly romantic spot more than 200 years later. The hotel enjoys an idyllic setting up in the hills overlooking the Caribbean Sea, cooled by gentle tradewinds. It’s a short drive to the beach reserved for Montpelier guests, complete with comfy sun loungers and private cabanas. The 19 rooms and suites are stylish and contemporary, and a prestigious tie-up with Relais & Châteaux means you’ll enjoy exquisite dining at the hotel’s three restaurants. Particularly special is the atmospheric Mill Privée, where you can enjoy a gourmet five-course tasting menu in a converted 300-year-old sugar mill.

ST VINCENT & THE GRENADINES If you’re not sure where Bequia is, then you really are in for a treat. This friendly, bucolic little island is the Caribbean like it used to be, a place where life moves at a gentle pace and the beaches are pristine and unspoilt. Bequia Beach is one of our favourite boutique hotels, owned by Swedish expat, Bengt Mortstedt. The 58 rooms, suites, cottages and villas have been skilfully styled with an elegant, retro chic look, and the hotel is situated amongst mango and papaya trees on the idyllic Friendship Beach. When we first came across Bequia Beach we were almost reluctant to share it with the world, but we’ve been delighted to see how the hotel has gone from strength to strength. The addition of the gorgeous villas has made this a more attractive option for families, and the recent introduction of VIP shuttle flights from Barbados on the hotel’s own nine-seater luxury plane means it’s even easier for UK guests to get here. We’ve probably sold you by now on the idea of coming to Bequia, so what can you do once you get here? First and foremost, this is a place to relax and enjoy the gently lilting rhythms of island life, with some of the friendliest locals in the Caribbean. But it may surprise you to learn that Bequia is home to some uncommonly-excellent restaurants, and owner Bengt will be only too happy to recommend some of his favourites. The hotel’s own recently-renovated main restaurant Bagatelle is also very good, serving fantastic fresh lobster and fish, while the Italian-style Blue Tropic is open during high season with regular live entertainment. Just a few minutes’ shuttle ride away, and under the same ownership as Bequia Beach Hotel, you’ll find Jack’s Beach Bar, set on the pristine Princess Margaret Beach – some say it’s the best beach in the Caribbean. You’ll want to bring your swimming gear as the waters are irresistibly clear and refreshingly suited to a dip on a warm day pre-cocktails! Bequia Beach also offers watersports including kayaking and paddleboarding free of charge, and there are wellness facilities including a spa, sauna, gym and yoga pavilion. Younger guests are well catered for, with supervised activities including treasure hunts and baking cakes, and complimentary WiFi means they can stay in touch with their friends back home.

SAINT LUCIA Foodie favourite Cap Maison is the most delectable boutique hotel in Saint Lucia. The Cliff at Cap restaurant is so good that guests at the other hotels all want to eat here, and it’s popular with the locals too. Award-winning chef Craig Jones has created a spectacular French Caribbean fusion menu; signature dishes include a zingy ceviche of reef conch and ahi tuna, succulent Kurobuta pork belly with razor clams and squid, and perfectly-smoked Kobe short rib. During the daytime, the Naked Fisherman Beach Bar & Grill offers a more informal, feet-in-the-sand vibe, and don’t forget to book a romantic dinner at Rock Maison, a private wooden deck perched just above the crashing surf.

7 nights from £2,299 per person sharing a Gardenview Room on Half Board. OFFER: Complimentary Half Board.

L A D E R A SAINT LUCIA The phrase ‘room with a view’ doesn’t quite do justice to the suites at Ladera. Perched on a volcanic ridge 1,000 feet above the ocean, each suite is open to the elements on one side, allowing you to enjoy the full majesty of the Pitons as you float in your private plunge pool. It’s hopelessly romantic, and the adults-only policy makes this a top pick for honeymooners. The fabulous farmto-table restaurant, Dasheene, has a well-deserved reputation as one of the island’s best, the wine cellar is stocked with more than 2,000 bottles from all over the world, and a stunning new spa is set to open at the beginning of 2020.

MAURITIUS The Oberoi is one of those resorts where a serene calm descends the moment you walk through the entrance. The grounds have been beautifully landscaped, with immaculate lawns and a waterfall spilling into koi ponds. The quiet location on the northwest coast creates an atmosphere conducive to romance and relaxation, and the service is impeccable. Accommodation consists of just 71 thatched-roof pavilions and villas, with higher categories offering the luxury of your own private swimming pool. There are three fantastic à la carte restaurants, eclectic activities including stargazing and wine tasting, and the Oberoi Spa is simply one of the best on the island.

K A N U H U R A MALDIVES Recent years has seen the much-loved Kanuhura undergo extensive refurbishments, and our love for this stunning resort has only continued to grow. Even if you’re a first-time visitor, there’s a good chance you’ve seen these brilliant white sands before; just last year, Tess Daly was spotted celebrating her 50th birthday here. The resort is spread over three islands, two of which are deserted and reserved for romantic picnics or secluded snorkelling. The main island is pretty large by Maldivian standards, yet there are only 80 villas, with a choice of direct beach access or a staircase down into the lagoon. The boho chic interiors look more fetching than ever, and the quality of the dining remains absolutely on point.

ANTIGUA The drive from Antigua airport to Hermitage Bay takes about 35 minutes, which doesn’t seem like long to wait for your entry into paradise. But the hotel’s owners clearly felt that you should start enjoying your holiday from the moment you step off the plane, which is why they introduced a VIP meet and greet service to fasttrack all Hermitage Bay guests straight through immigration. When you arrive at the hotel, prepare to have your breath taken away by views of the cobalt Caribbean Sea. Hermitage Bay is secluded and ultra-exclusive, and you’ll soon see why it’s a favourite choice for honeymooners. Just 30 suites hewn from tropical hardwoods tumble down the hillside to the gorgeous coral beach, with some perched right on the sand. Sun worshippers will gravitate instinctively towards the Beachfront Suites, while others will prefer to cocoon themselves in the Hillside Suites, with their private plunge pools and panoramic vistas. The hotel’s impressive trophy cabinet includes multiple awards from Condé Nast Traveler, thanks to its heady mix of luxurious accommodation, superb dining and a wonderful spa. A sense of calm and wellbeing pervades the entire hotel; this is truly one of those places where you have to pinch yourself to make sure it isn’t all some improbable dream.

Choosing the right hotel here can be tricky, but we were instantly taken with the Myconian Collection, a family-owned group of ten luxury hotels, each with their own personality. The Myconian Ambassador was the first truly five-star hotel on the island when it opened in 1992, and it’s a great choice for foodies, with highlights including the Relais & Châteaux-affiliated Efisia fine dining restaurant. The hotel attracts a youthful and hip crowd, located within walking distance of the Scorpios and SantAnna beach clubs. SUITE DREAMS Settle in for a fabulous night’s sleep with our ultra-luxury suite offering, which push the boundaries of opulence. With everything from unbeatable panoramic views to awe-inspiring architecture, they offer something truly special.

JOALI MALDIVES It takes something special to stand out in the Maldives, where every other island seems to be graced with another jaw-dropping luxury resort, yet Joali manages it with aplomb. Istanbul-based studio, Autoban, have imbued the huge, high-ceilinged villas with a distinctive aesthetic, blending island chic with high-end design. Yes, you’ll love your private infinity pool and outdoor bathroom, but in the Maldives that’s almost a given; what really stands out is the attention to detail and the sophisticated finish, using materials such as locally hand-carved wood panels and Norwegian marble in the bathrooms. Joali is a relative newcomer, but behind the scenes is an all-star management team plucked from some of the top resorts in the Maldives. It’s no surprise to us that we’ve heard so many rave reviews, with guests praising the superb dining, thoughtful staff and stunning accommodation. Joali has also been conceived with the environment in mind; single-use plastics are banned, all bathroom products are vegan and chemical-free, and the overwater villa pools are different sizes, designed to ensure they don’t disturb the coral on the lagoon floor.

Ever-popular as a honeymoon destination, this cluster of idyllic islands in the Indian Ocean are bequeathed with nature’s gifts and adorned with a bedazzlement of resorts that cater perfectly for couples seeking romance and seclusion. The 115 granite and coralline islands that make up the country are scattered like diamonds in the night sky across the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The staggering beauty the Seychelles are famed for can be uncovered wherever you go, but we’d recommend a visit to the island of La Digue, where you’ll lay eyes on Anse Source d’Argent, one of the world’s most photographed beaches, where granite boulders rise dramatically from powderywhite sands. Praslin is just as enthralling; it’s here you’ll discover the prehistoric splendor of the UNESCO-listed Vallée de Mai National Park, and you can dip into translucent waters where all manner of marine life, including hawksbill turtles and stingrays, occupy a majestic underwater realm.

hink the Caribbean’s all about lounging on the beach with a rum punch and working on your tan? Think again. The mountainous island of Dominica, nicknamed the ‘nature island’, has more than enough in the way of adventure for those that like a little momentum with their mojito. To give you an idea of the scope of the island’s adventurous spirit, it lays claim to the Caribbean’s very first long-distance hiking trail, and is strewn with volcanoes, rivers, hot springs and rainforest. Dozens of species of bird, four types of turtle, pods of whales and dolphins, and insects as beautiful as butterflies and as strange as centipedes also reside in Dominica and its surroundings waters. It’s no surprise then that the island lures guests that are into eco-tourism, experiential travel and off-the-beaten track retreats. Mass tourism hasn’t marred the island’s authenticity, with no long-haul flights to speak of, and it’s even home to the largest indigenous population in the Eastern Caribbean, known locally as the Kalinago people. There are plenty of charming resorts on island, with Secret Bay and Fort Young being two of our favourites, and we’re delighted to introduce the island’s very first five-star luxury resort; Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski opened in October 2019. So if active adventures are on your horizon, or you simply want to connect with nature and relax in untouched surroundings, it’s well worth turning your attention to Dominica.

A

ntigua is famed for having so many beaches, you could visit a different one each day of the year, but in fact, this action-packed Caribbean isle is just as popular with sailors as it is sunbathers. Steady trade winds, natural bays and harbours, a rich naval heritage, and tempting turquoise waters make the destination ideal for adventures atop the ocean. The island’s packed calendar of events includes a host of maritime spectacles and soirees, running from December through to April, the pinnacle of which is Antigua Sailing Week which kicks off at the end of April. This is one of the world’s most significant regattas, with sailors and seafaring enthusiasts attending from far and wide. And the fun doesn’t end with sailing, as the party continues beyond the water, with a host of day and night-time events including concerts, parties, games and barbecues. If sailing’s not your thing, fear not. Antigua is the ideal island for year-round sunshine coupled with plenty of things to see and do. July heralds the arrival of the spectacular Antigua Carnival, a summertime spectacle of music, parades, colourful costumes, dancing and revelry.

NT

Every Sunday, year-round for the past three decades, the island’s restored military lookout Shirley Heights has been host to evening barbecue parties where visitors and locals come together to eat and listen to local bands. Sporting fans will also be spoilt for choice, with cricket season taking place from January to July, cycling from February to November, and football from August to February to name but a few of Antigua’s scintillating sporting seasons. And though there’s such a wealth of island events to immerse yourself in, the beach is never far from any visitor’s eye. From July to October, you can witness turtles nesting and hatching on the soft sands, and snorkelling and diving are popular pastimes, with tropical fish and slumbering shipwrecks dwelling in the cerulean waters.

The islands feature some of the most extraordinary spaces we’ve seen, including Nest, a restaurant set high up in the treetops, and Subsix, an amazing underwater enclave for a romantic lunch or gourmet dinner. Then there’s Edge, the exclusive over-water restaurant which is only accessible by boat.

JUST BACK FROM...

At Caribtours we all share a passion for our stunning destinations – throughout the year our dedicated team travel across the globe to keep an eye on our beloved resorts and a lookout for even more luxurious gems for your next dream getaway. BAHIA DEL DUQUE

TENERIFE, SPAIN

N ATALIA, D ESTINATION M ANAGER

I went to Bahia del Duque for a relaxing family holiday with my husband and little boy, and what really stood out from the beginning was the amazing service from the staff, who went above and beyond to make us feel at home. The resort really had the ‘wow factor’, with its stunning architecture designed to look like an authentic Spanish village, and it was just a stone’s throw from the beautiful sandy beach. Our spacious oceanview suite offered spectacular views of Tenerife, which lit up the landscape at night. The breakfast provided was out of this world, as was our decadent dinner at the La Brassier restaurant which is overseen by two-Michelin-star chef, Pierre Resimont. And my son was won over by the chocolate fountain, kids’ cocktails and funky disco held at the fun-packed Kid’s Club.

IBIZA, SPAIN REBEC C A, HEAD O F SALES

The stunning aesthetics at 7Pines Ibiza make for an Instagrammer’s dream; it’s only a stone’s throw from the secluded pebble beach, Cala Codolar, and the cobalt-blue Mediterranean Sea welcomed my husband and me to paradise. Set high above, on the edge of a cliff, we felt very special in our Cliff Suite with spacious terrace, private garden and balcony overlooking the iconic island of Es Vedrà. The resort’s unique Home Delivery room service concept was a nice touch, and dining out at the wider resort was especially wonderful; it’s not just the food, but the spectacular setting that makes every meal memorable. Whilst we sipped Champagne and picked from our Mediterranean sharing platter, we watched the mesmerising Balearic sun set on our wonderful weekend away.

TRAVEL ADVISER, LOUISE, HAS JUST RETURNED FROM TURKEY WHERE SHE STAYED AT THE STUNNING D-RESORT GÖCEK - SHE FILLS US IN ON THE BEST OF THIS BEAUTIFUL SPOT ON THE TURQUOISE COAST, AND GIVES US HER TOP TURKEY RESORT RECOMMENDATIONS.

EXPLORING THE TURKISH RIVIERA

D - R E S O RT G Ö C E K It was my first time visiting the Turkish Riviera and I found it absolutely stunning, with lush green mountain scenery, and something to suit everyone’s taste whether for foodies, spa lovers or sports enthusiasts! I flew into Dalaman, ready for my stay at the beautiful D-Resort Göcek. The resort is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and it certainly didn’t disappoint. It felt like I was walking through a quaint village as the rooms are housed in low rise buildings scattered around the grounds which are filled with pools, beautiful flowers and even a little river that runs through the property. Rooms and suites are decorated in a nautical style, and have a luxurious feel about them. I particularly liked the Premier Suites Pool Access for a swim up option; the pool used is exclusive to this room category. The D-Spa was also lovely and had all the wellness facilities you could think of, along with an excellent fullyequipped gym. I loved the location here as the shops and restaurants are literally on your doorstep, and there’s the opportunity to go on amazing yacht cruises.

PRIVATE SALES MANAGER, FIONA, HAS JUST RETURNED FROM BARBADOS. HERE, SHE TELLS US ABOUT TWO BEAUTIFUL RESORTS SHE HAD THE PLEASURE OF VISITING.

CORAL REEF CLUB

BARBADOS

Upon arrival, as I ambled through the luscious garden, the headiest aroma from the casuarina and frangipani trees floated through the air, adding to the warm welcome of the O’Hara family who have lovingly tended to the resort for over 60 years. The Coral Reef Club flawlessly captures the unique sights, sounds and tastes of the Caribbean whilst serving the finest in luxury accommodation. Our spacious Luxury Garden Cottage with private plunge pool stepped out onto the 12 acres of gorgeous garden, and was just a stone’s throw from the powder-soft beach. The highlight had to be the famous Thursday night barbecue which was followed by a fantastic fire-eating show and limbo dancing.

7 nights from £1,929 per person sharing a Garden Room Cottage including breakfast. OFFER: Save up to 25%.

THE SANDPIPER

BARBADOS

As sister resort of Coral Reef Club, I had high expectations for this elegant hotel and it did not disappoint. The Sandpiper is perched on a stunning sandy beach on the West Coast, softly caressed by sapphire seas and surrounded by tantalising tropical gardens. The hospitable Bajan ambience is palpable and echoes the warm family vibe of its sister hotel. Our Two Bedroom Suite was very spacious and included a luxurious king size bed and beautiful balcony overlooking the seven acres of garden. Their award-winning restaurant, sat adjacent to torch-lit tropical gardens and surrounded by serene koi ponds, serves eclectic food with Caribbean flair. The superb chili-marinated roast Caribbean shrimp dish deserves a special mention.

SILVERSANDS

GRENADA

JENNY, H EAD OF P ROD UCT

Silversands is the first new luxury hotel on Grand Anse Beach in over 25 years, and brings something fresh and exciting to Grenada. I can see the sleek, minimal chic interiors definitely appealing to design-conscious travellers; they’re decorated in warm, neutral tones using limestone, marble and tropical hardwood. My impressive insuite tech included a sound system, espresso machine and handy Silversands app, while my bathroom had an indulgent soaking tub and rain shower. There are just 43 suites and a handful of three- and four-bedroom villas, each with a fullyequipped kitchen and private pool. The spa had lots of cool features like an ice cave, hammam and experiential shower. And at the centre of the hotel was a head-turning infinity pool which stretches 100 metres from the lobby to the powder-white sand – it was incredible!

ELOUNDA GULF VILLAS

CRETE, GREECE

HELEN, SENIOR TR AVEL ADVISER

With the hotel’s motto promising ‘extraordinary moments’, I had high expectations when it came to my Cretan getaway, and Elounda Gulf Villas definitely delivered. What initially stood out to me was the extraordinary location which overlooks the magnificent Gulf of Mirabello. I was led by vigilant staff to my stunningly-designed Imperial Spa Pool Villa; with its mirror-smooth infinity pool, it was hard to tell where the

pool ended and ocean began. The unparalleled luxury of the suite’s own private spa and steam bath made me hesitant to leave, but the exceptional complimentary breakfast buffet including authentic Cretan delicacies was far too tempting. The resort is ideal for families too; there’s a fantastic ‘Cool Creche and Kids Club’ with a vast array of activities from swimming lessons, cycling and tennis to arts and crafts, mini discos and movie nights.

ST VINCENT & THE GRENADINES

OUR HEAD OF SALES REBECCA RECENTLY VISITED THE BEAUTIFUL ST VINCENT & THE GRENADINES. HERE’S WHAT SHE HAD TO SAY ABOUT THIS PARADISIACAL PLACE.

I was fortunate enough to spend a week hopping around the islands of St Vincent and the Grenadines recently and I have to say they look everything as beautiful as they do in the travel guides. It wasn’t my first visit to this exquisite part of the Caribbean but I was taken aback by the brilliantly-blue waters, glimmering sands and idyllic islands I encountered. Centuries of volcanic activity have fashioned the main island of the archipelago, St. Vincent, into a unique paradise of dense forests, mountain trails, waterfalls and colourful wildlife making it the ideal backdrop for an eco-adventure. The island has recently opened a brand new international airport, and it’s the perfect hub for island hopping around the region. We visited Mustique, an island known as a playground for royalty and rock stars – Princess Margaret was a notable visitor after Lord Glenconner gifted her a 10-acre plot of land here in 1960. There are plenty of luxury villas on Mustique, but the island’s only hotel 72

To book call  020

is Cotton House, where we were lucky enough to stay for two nights. Daniel Craig has stayed there, and if it’s good enough for 007, it’s good enough for me! There are just 17 rooms and suites, some of which include a private plunge pool. We started our stay with a rum cocktail in The Great House which actually boasts one of the largest collections of native rums in the Caribbean! And, of course, we couldn’t visit Mustique without paying a visit to Basil’s Bar. The haunt of many a celebrity over its illustrious history, it recently reopened after a two-year renovation. From Mustique it was onwards to Union Island, from where we visited the idyllic Petit St. Vincent (detailed on page 73), before departing for Canouan. We checked into the ultraluxury Mandarin Oriental, Canouan (page 23), and I was dazzled by the pristine beaches, said to be some of the best in the Caribbean. From here, you can also take a catamaran cruise over to the Tobago

3797 2123 or visit caribtours.co.uk/sale

Cays which is simply unmissable; parts of Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed here and you can snorkel with turtles and lounge on the most beautiful beaches imaginable. The natural environment continued to impress as we were led on a hike up Mount Royal, the island’s highest point, on our final day. We passed by tortoises casually going about their business as we ascended to the top, and once we reached the peak, I felt my breath leave me for another reason altogether as I witnessed the staggering view of the surrounding islands and brilliantly-blue Caribbean Sea.

PETIT ST VINCENT

ST VINCENT & THE GRENADINES R E B ECCA, H EAD OF SALES

In today’s hyper-connected world of smartphones, rolling news and endlessly refreshing your feed to check what’s new, it can be hard to switch off. At Petit St Vincent it couldn’t be easier; there are no TVs, phones or Wi-Fi in the cottages (you can pick it up in the lobby area when you want to check your emails), so spending real time together is what it’s all about here. This private island retreat lies at the southern tip of the Grenadines, with just 22 cottages set amongst two miles of beach, palm trees and hammocks. The accommodation has an artfully rustic look, with stone floors and driftwood furnishings, but you still have modcons like a mini bar, Nespresso machine and iPod dock. There’s a real sense of space, and not just in your cottage: if you crunch the numbers it works out at around two acres per guest, and you’ll rarely see anyone except for at meal times. There are two restaurants, one a little more formal and the other right on the sand. You can also take a boat trip to a deserted sandbank for a romantic picnic, surrounded by the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Although the main reason for coming to Petit St Vincent is relaxation, you can also work up a sweat on the tennis court or the fitness trail. There is a Jean-Michel Cousteau Dive Centre on site, and I highly recommend a snorkelling trip to the nearby Tobago Cays. Last but not least, don’t forget to visit the lovely hillside spa, with open-air treatment rooms and yoga classes overlooking Conch Bay.

JAMAICA W

e sold our very first holiday to Jamaica back in 1979, and this wonderful island still embodies everything we love about the Caribbean: the rich culture, the magnificent natural beauty and the warm, welcoming people. There are plenty of reasons to visit Jamaica in 2020, including the release of the new James Bond film, ‘No Time to Die’. The Bond story has its genesis in Jamaica, where Ian Fleming wrote many of the novels at his Goldeneye estate (now an exclusive boutique hotel and Caribtours favourite). Jamaica is about more than just snoozing on your sun lounger; no other Caribbean island has produced so many cultural and sporting icons, from reggae stars, Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff, to record breakers, Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Immerse yourself in the legendary nightlife, where the beach bars rock and the rum flows freely, and explore the island’s diverse cuisine, from ackee and saltfish to sizzling jerk chicken. Away from the coast you’ll find a different Jamaica, a lush and beautiful landscape of soaring mountains, verdant banana plantations and crystalline rivers that tumble over dramatic waterfalls. Here you can enjoy energetic pursuits like bobsledding, mountain biking and rafting, or scour the rainforest for wildlife including iguanas, crocodiles and a colourful cornucopia of birds.
