MEET THE TEAM

Between us we have slept in every hotel, cottage, and villa on every island. We have sipped cocktails in the bars, eaten in the restaurants, trekked the hikes, sailed on the boats and haggled with the locals in the markets . . .

Time at Just Grenada Group: 16 years.

MANDY BURTEN

Head of Just Grenada Group

Much of my working life has been spent in travel, either in tour operating or as a travel agent, but it’s nice to be part of a small specialist company where there is so much attention to detail. My love of Grenada and Tobago began many years ago whilst I was living and working in neighbouring Venezuela. My job would often take me across to these islands, so it must have been fate that I should stumble across Just Grenada Group shortly after returning to the UK in 2005. We have become real experts at creating unique multi-centre holidays – some of which just focus on different regions of one island, whilst others involve seeing more than one island in the same holiday. I love the challenge of putting these trips together and making sure all the connections are smooth and seamless, and it is so rewarding when all the pieces of the jigsaw come together and they always do in the end!

Time at Just Grenada Group: 20 years.

I have been fortunate to visit the Caribbean many times and love all the islands that we feature as they all offer something different. I found St Lucia to be an absolute gem, I couldn’t help but drink in the sight of the Pitons at every opportunity, I found them totally mesmerising and Tobago a lush, green, beautiful island and the first island that I visited, so holds a special place in my heart. Riding on horseback through the rainforest and then swimming with the horses in the sea after a flat-out gallop along the beach will always be a lasting memory for me! Closer to home, Slovenia is such a wonderful country, the people are so friendly and welcoming and the natural beauty of majestic mountains, crystal clear lakes and abundant wildflower meadows as well as castles, caves and rivers, it truly is a walkers paradise.

Time at Just Grenada Group: 9 years.

Since taking a Freddie Laker flight in the 70’s I have been hooked on travel and my family and I love to travel to new places. I’ve been lucky to stay in some of the most idyllic places in the Caribbean, from 5 star hotels to little inns on the beach, with and without my family – I’m one lucky traveller! My other passion is arranging holidays for other people and I really enjoy creating itineraries to help people get the best out of the Caribbean. Telling our clients about my favourite little roti shack is a lovely part of the job – especially when they come back home and ring to tell me how much they enjoyed the holiday I have arranged!

BARBADOS BARBADOS

A bucket-list destination for those seeking endless days of sun, sea and sand, it’s safe to say that holidays spent in Barbados are ones of pure bliss.

WHY WE LOVE BARBADOS?

From the rum-swilling buccaneers and sugar barons of old to the modern-day jet-set, Barbados has long enticed adventurers and pleasure seekers to its platinum sands. With daily airlift year-round, stunning beaches, contrasting coastlines and a rich history, today Barbados endures as the most popular island for Brits travelling to the Caribbean. There’s plenty to see and do here, from stunning tropical gardens to quaint fishing villages and relaxing at the local rum shop - you can do as much as you want to.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO?

The west coast beaches are known as the Platinum coast and with good reason, the pristine white sands are some of the best we know. Over on the east coast, the calm seas give way to a wilder side and make for a great day trip, or a twin-centre holiday. The charming villages, historic churches and cricket

pitches are reminiscent of home, albeit with the occasional monkey in the trees to remind you that you’re in the tropics. The impressive Harrison’s Cave is also worth visiting, plus the beautiful Andromeda Botanical Gardens which, spread over six acres, is one of the largest collections of tropical plants in the Caribbean.

It’s easy to get around in Barbados hop on the local reggae bus to get into the island spirit, or hire a car and explore at your own pace.

Dining out in Barbados can be smart or barefoot, although we would certainly suggest making advance reservations in the high season. We highly recommend contemporary Lonestar and The Fish Pot, which is set right on the waters edge. Oistins Fish Fry is a local institution and takes place each Friday in a lively fishing village on the south coast. Here, enjoy catch of the day, fresh salads and a large helping of the Bajan staple, macaroni pie.

SAINT LUCIASAINT LUCIA

WHY WE LOVE SAINT LUCIA?

Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful Caribbean islands, it captivates all travellers with many of our guests coming back time and time again. With a choice of rainforest retreats to beachfront boutique stays, it’s also the perfect place for a twincentre to explore both the north and south of the island. Saint Lucia’s mix of English, French and African influences means there’s great local dining, markets and street parties to enjoy during your stay.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO?

You can see reminders of the island’s colonial past at the fortifications at Pigeon Island in the north, while the ‘drive-in’ volcano at Sulphur Springs Park and the towering Pitons of molten rock in the south offer a glimpse of the islands more ancient history. Lush and green, the island has a rich diversity of wildlife, bird-life, flora and fauna. The Pitons provide

the iconic image of the island and although the higher of the two, Gros Piton is actually the one to hike up if you’re feeling energetic. For a more sedate option, the view is equally spectacular from one of the lovely hotels and restaurants in the area, or indeed from the water. A scenic sailing day is a leisurely way to see the island, taking in picturesque beaches and sleeping fishing villages along the way.

For divers, Saint Lucia is a great choice – the southwest of the island is home to Anse Chochon, a quiet little bay with reefs just teeming with colourful fish. Anse des Pitons is stunning, diving and snorkelling here in the most spectacular setting between the two Pitons is a memorable experience.

The Friday night parties are something of an institution, the villages of Anse La Raye and Gros Islet have that winning combination of fresh barbecued seafood, rum punches and lively music.

Impossibly picturesque, Saint Lucia is often known as the most romantic Caribbean island, effortlessly combining rustic retreats and boutique boltholes with dramatic views of the Pitons.

ST KITTS & NEVISST KITTS & NEVIS

St Kitts and its stunning sister isle of Nevis are separated by a two mile wide channel, a romantic blaze of bright blue skies, picture perfect beaches and furrowed volcanic peaks.

WHY WE LOVE ST KITTS AND NEVIS?

This twin-island nation is just ideal for a twin centre holiday. Named after Christopher Columbus who discovered it in 1693, most travellers will arrive into St Kitts. As both islands have a rich culture, lovely beaches, and charming people; we certainly recommend taking the 10-minute boat ride between the two. Nevis may be smaller than its neighbour but has so much to offer. From the towering peak of Mount Liamuiga and its surrounding rainforest, to the charming places to stay – it’s a real Caribbean gem.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO?

Here, there’s all the usual joys of a Caribbean holiday with lovely beaches, watersports, delicious food, and tropical sunshine. Our accommodation selection features historic inns and plantations that are truly unique, for example at Montpelier Plantation you can dine in an old sugar mill. Each run by lovely

teams, you won’t need to go far to find classic Caribbean warmth and hospitality.

St Kitts is the busier of the two islands, teeming with monkeys and mongoose, home to exotic black sands in the north and white shores further south, the island boasts reef-protected waters which are ideal for swimming, snorkelling and diving. From Nevis, there are also dozens of reefs and wrecks just off shore to explore.

Back on land in Nevis, the charming capital Charlestown is filled with interesting 18th and 19th-century buildings. No trip to St Kitts would be complete without visiting Brimstone Hill, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this 18th-century fortress sits high on a hillside and has spectacular views over the Caribbean Sea. The liveliest place in St Kitts is near Frigate Bay, a strip of beach bars where you can ‘lime’ with the locals and enjoy a tasty barbecue washed down with rum punch.

MONTPELIER PLANTATION & BEACH

Although its history dates back to 1687, there’s nothing out-dated or old fashioned about this former plantation house in Nevis. The Hoffman family who own Montpelier Plantation have been in the Caribbean for four generations and you’ll be warmly greeted here by their team. Guests stay in chic, modern accommodation and we recommend the superb, innovative cuisine at the hotel’s three restaurants including the tiny Mill Privee - it’s home to the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, built inside an 18th century sugar mill. Open for dinner, Mill Privee serves six-course tasting menus in a candlelit setting.

Montpelier may not be right on the beach but the ocean is just a few minutes’ drive away and, once there, the hidden cove is reserved exclusively for hotel guests so you’ll enjoy perfect peace and seclusion.

7 nights from £1,875 per person including breakfast.

GOLDEN ROCK INN

Golden Rock Inn dates back to the 1800s and is set on 100 acres of land stretching up the jungle-clad slopes of Mount Nevis. The property has been thoughtfully restored through the eyes of the owners, New York artists Helen and Brice Marden; in collaboration with the Miami based designer Raymond Jungles. This hilltop hideaway has just 11 unique rooms and cottages, each with a private terrace. We love the historic twostorey sugar mill which has now been transformed into comfortable two-bedroom accommodation. There’s a spring-fed freshwater pool and the tropical gardens here are absolutely remarkable, the dazzling variety of plants are well tended by the hotel’s friendly staff. The Rocks restaurant has a strong emphasis on locally sourced produce and the hotel’s bar serves signature cocktails underneath an atmospheric stone vaulted ceiling - both are popular with guests and locals alike.

TOBAGO TOBAGO

Sun-soaked Tobago is Trinidad’s wistful, sleepy sister, an island of intoxicatingly laid back resorts and majestic beauty.

WHY WE LOVE TOBAGO?

Sun-soaked Tobago is an island of contrasts –golden beaches and blue waters of course, but also there’s dramatic rainforest and abundance of wildlife. It’s always exceptionally popular for birdwatching, Tobago has over 260 species to spot.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO?

Tobago’s interior is rich in nature, with the mountainous Tobago Forest Reserve reaching near 2000 feet, there’s a truly dazzling variety of flowers and vegetation. The northeast is a little more undiscovered, we recommend taking a glass bottomed boat from Speyside to Little Tobago, a bird sanctuary, and nearby Goat Island which is surrounded by reefs home to living coral and colourful fish. Tobago is absolutely one of the best spots for snorkelling and diving, with a diverse marine life including large manta rays and dolphins. If you

are travelling between May and September, your stay may coincide with turtle hatching season, which is a memorable experience.

As with all Caribbean islands there are some stunning sands to choose from here – the most famous being Pigeon Point and Stonehaven Bay. The traditional fishing village of Castara is set within a wonderful horseshoe bay split into two lovely sandy beaches. You will find a good selection of places to eat and drink around both beaches and within the village itself. Take a trip up the coast though, and there’s some less frequented peaceful sandy bays, such as Man O’War Bay, Pirates Bay and Bloody Bay, names which give you a little hint at Tobago’s past.

Visit the Fort King George to find out a little more, built by the English in 1770 the views at sunset at not to be missed. Here, you’ll also find the Tobago Museum, with artefacts both military and from the pirate ships that used to sail these waters.

CASTARA RETREATS

From the tiny hummingbirds hovering amongst the trees to the fireflies that light up the night sky, this wonderful family-run eco retreat is all about getting back to nature. Designed and built by British owners, an extraordinary amount of care and attention has been taken to create a truly unique hideaway. The 17 one or two-bedroom accommodations all have sea views, are beautifully crafted, and the warm hospitality has guests coming back year after year. As the perfect sunset spot, we recommend a cocktail and dinner at Castara’s Caribbean Kitchen bar and restaurant. For those looking to unwind even further, the Retreat’s Wellness Studio offers daily yoga classes and restorative massages. If you’re seeking an authentic experience, you needn’t look further - supporting and integrating with the local community is an important part of the hotel’s ethos.

7 nights from £1,199 per person on room only.

BLUE WATER INN RESORT & SPA

The perfect place to get away from it all, this boutique hotel occupies a restful spot where all 38 rooms and bungalows line the private sheltered beach of Batteaux Bay. Set within lush grounds and boasting its own private beach, guests can look forward to uninterrupted views from each of the rooms, studios and bungalows and wake to the sounds of the ocean. The hotel’s open-air Aqua Restaurant & Bar serves delicious fresh fish with a side of stunning views. When you’re ready to explore, nearby Main Ridge Wildlife Reserve has all the flora, fauna, birdlife, and waterfalls you could wish for. Boats make regular trips to Goat Island and Little Tobago, a wildlife sanctuary, and you’re only a short drive from the picture-postcard village of Charlotteville.

PLANTATION BEACH VILLAS

This lovely collection of three-bedrooms villas is nestled in a lush grove of tropical trees; perched on a hillside leading down to a pool and palm-fringed beach. Each of the six villas are serviced by a dedicated housekeeper, who provides cleaning and laundry services each morning, and who will also cook meals on request – so you can opt to do as much or as little as you like. These houses are built in the genuine colonial style with the gingerbread wooden fretwork and cool wooden decking terraces, all of which have views over the blue Caribbean waters beyond. Your hosts are discreet but attentive - you’ll find each villa has a housekeeper who will be pleased to cook for you on request, and there’s also a poolside bar for those cooling daytime drinks.

7 nights from £2,415 per person on self catering.

COCO REEF RESORT & SPA

Coco Reef enjoys one of the best spots on the island, home to three of Tobago’s most revered stretches of sand - including the only private beach on the island and a shallow, warm lagoon. This charming resort embraces a laid-back Caribbean ambience that draws our clients back time and time again. The 135 spacious rooms, suites and villas are decorated in a traditional Caribbean style. Ideal for families, the spacious Two Bedroom Villa suites are set in the gardens and we always recommend upgrading to an ocean view. Tamara’s restaurant offers international cuisine in an elegant setting overlooking the Caribbean Sea, whilst Bacchanals is a more casual daytime spot for drinks and snacks. Coco Reef is the perfect place to relax, but there’s also plenty of activities here with two tennis courts, PADI dive shop, watersports and nearby a golf course.
