DEAR This past year has truly been a period of transformation, in how we meet the needs of our community, and in how we face new challenges together. Beyond our accomplishments, a single purpose permeates our work: helping our community get and stay healthy. It begins with our focus on the conditions that have the greatest impact on people in our region. Then, through proactive, coordinated efforts—whether it’s our medical homes, our continually improving processes, or our significantly enhanced electronic health records system— we’re finding new, more advanced ways to make the greatest difference, one patient at a time.
By developing ways to help individuals and whole communities get ahead of the health issues that affect them the most, Carilion Clinic is making a significant investment in the future of our region — one that we hope will pay dividends for generations to come.
This much is certain: every success we enjoy, we enjoy together. You’ve helped Carilion transform the health of everyone around us, and it has been my honor to join you, from moment one.
Sincerely,
Nancy Howell Agee President and CEO Carilion Clinic

WORKING to take Debra’s
breathlessness away
A former manufacturing worker and a smoker since the age of 14, Debra Dodd of Fincastle had become accustomed to gasping for air and visiting emergency rooms—two things no one should ever call routine. Fortunately for Debra, and for many patients in similar situations, Carilion Clinic is leading the way in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. With a care team assigned to her, Debra is getting her life back. She says, “My case manager calls once a week to check on me, and a telehealth nurse monitors my oxygen levels without my leaving home. And since my doctor changed my medication, I’ve gone eight months without a hospital visit.” Now Debra’s routine involves more traveling and playing with her dogs, and it’s sunsets, not stairs, that take her breath away.

RECONSTRUCTING Betty’s peace of
“It was like a grenade went off in my head,” recounts 79-year-old Roanoke sculptor Betty Branch. That “grenade” was a brain hemorrhage, leaving the acclaimed artist unable to use her entire left side. But Betty wasn’t going to let this crisis stop her, and neither was her care team at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. There, interventional radiologists and neurosurgeons worked together to perform a groundbreaking neurointerventional procedure. By way of remote incisions, they reached Betty’s hemorrhage and effectively plugged it. Just three months later, she was back to her studio and the life she loves.
I HAVE ALMOST REGAINED FULL USE OF MY LEFT HAND, AND HAVE NOTHING BUT PRAISE FOR MY ENTIRE TEAM OF DOCTORS, NURSES, AND THERAPISTS AT CARILION.”

Intervening as a team To treat a potentially devastating stroke, it takes a team of experts working together as one. And that’s what routinely happens when Carilion Clinic neurologists and interventional radiologists team up to get patients out of danger quickly and on the road to recovery. It’s just one more way Carilion specialists are working together to transform care.

GETTING ZAC
healthy, and back in
the game
As a varsity football and basketball player at Roanoke’s Cave Spring High School, 16-year-old Zac Foutz was used to fighting through pain and digging deep to win. But when he became the youngest known patient to contract fungal meningitis from a tainted injection, these ideas took on a whole new meaning. And this wasn’t a game; this was a fight for his life. Zac spent 15 days at Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital undergoing treatment. Despite a weakened immune system and the loss of his hair, he stood his ground, rallied hard, and staged an amazing comeback—in fact, he was named first-team All-State by the Virginia High School League. With Carilion on his side, Zac now has a new understanding of willpower, pain and gain, and most important of all, teamwork.
Building a better mascot
Raising funds and spirits
Any kid will tell you that the hospital can be a scary place.
So Carilion worked with a team of doctors from the Pediatric Medical Device Institute at Virginia Tech to bring our children’s hospital mascot, Ned, to life. Now

TRANSFORMING CARE every day, in every way Whether it’s at the expected times or in the moments nobody sees coming, Carilion is here for every one. And we’re dedicated to transforming how people get better and stay healthy. We’re elevating the quality of our care at every turn, working in collaborative teams with focused protocols, even turning patients’ homes into places of healing. We’re committed to being there for our community, where people live, work, and play. It’s an ambitious undertaking, but it inspires us every day.
9
Accelerating access to care Carilion Clinic recently opened a VelocityCare location in Blacksburg—our fifth new urgent care site in the past two years. Now residents in Roanoke, Daleville, Christiansburg, Westlake, and Blacksburg can get to the doctor sooner, which means we’re meeting the needs of more patients, and helping sudden injuries and illnesses heal faster.
Giving fitness a makeover Wellness takes hard work, and sometimes it takes an actual workout. That’s why the Carilion-owned Roanoke Athletic Club will soon undergo major renovations, to expand the facility’s clinical exercise programs and offer the community even more opportunities to sweat, stay fit, and live well.
Earning greater recognition With innovations in telemedicine, we’re now able to provide coordinated care, right in a patient’s home. And according to National Research Corporation and DecisionHealth, we’re doing it well. The organization listed Carilion Clinic Home Care, both in Franklin County and in Roanoke, among the HomeCare Elite, the top 500 providers in the nation for quality home care.
10
PUTTING RECORDS in reach MyChart, your electronic health records, has revolutionized the way patients and physicians interact and exchange information. Now, with the development and launch of a MyChart mobile app for smartphones, Carilion Clinic is putting this vital health resource right at your fingertips.
11
Bringing care closer Every community, no matter how big or small, deserves access to the latest and most up-to-date care. With the newly renovated Emergency Department at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital and the opening of the new family medicine practice in Giles County, it’s easy to see our commitment to putting exceptional care close to home.
Restoring outer beauty With the development of a plastic and reconstructive surgery section, Carilion Clinic is ready to correct the effects of facial trauma, skin cancer, and cleft palate and other defects, as well as perform cosmetic procedures.
Deepening our expertise Carilion Clinic is taking gastrointestinal care to a new level with an expanded practice and new personnel, including an internationally known expert in inflammatory bowel disease. Together, these specialists will treat patients in Roanoke, and serve on the faculty of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
Bolstering women’s care There are no easy cancers. But now women have new specialists to help them fight back: Carilion Clinic offers expanded expertise in urogynecology and gynecologic oncology. Along with their colleagues, these physicians are helping pioneer new treatments in women’s health, and opening up possibilities for better outcomes.
12
13
REVOLUTIONIZING TEACHING and healing through technology With a tradition that goes back well over 100 years, Carilion Clinic continues to transform healthcare, beginning with how it’s taught. In just this past year, the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine introduced its new Anatomage Table. This device, which is like a person-sized iPad for human anatomy, changes the way medical students view case scenarios and study the human body, with various angles and cross-sections all available at the swipe of a finger—and without picking up a scalpel.
Making the discoveries of a lifetime Making good on a promise to provide care that is both pioneering and accessible, the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute is using a $4.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to help children with cerebral palsy. Through research and physical therapy, some 135 patients from around the world are expected to benefit, receiving treatment that lasts up to a month, and with hope, experiencing results that last a lifetime.
Commanding greater compensation
Expanding our horizons
Offering new opportunities
A recent study published in The New York Times found that Jefferson College of Health Sciences alumni earn over $20,000 more than the state average in their first year of employment, placing JCHS at the top for first-year earnings of bachelor’s degree graduates in Virginia.
The Carilion Clinic-Virginia Tech Carilion Graduate Medical Education program continues to expand, with the addition of a dental residency and fellowships in gastroenterology and interventional cardiology.
With its fourth class of medical students, the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine is now at full enrollment with 168 students.

TAKING ACTION FOR A STRONGER, HEALTHIER COMMUNITY Following our landmark 2012 Community Health Needs Assessment of the Roanoke Valley, we recently surveyed residents of the New River Valley and Bedford, Franklin, and Tazewell counties. As with the Roanoke Valley study, a community coalition will identify and address the most pressing health issues facing residents, such as access to care, coordination of care, and health and wellness literacy. This research is further proof of how Carilion is responding to today’s most pressing health issues, and striving to transform the health of our region for years to come.
Reaching healthier heights Visitors to Roanoke’s recently renovated Center in the Square atrium are experiencing Carilion Clinic’s StairWellness initiative. By adorning the main staircase with bright colors and helpful health tips, we’re reaching out to the community and demonstrating how exercise can be a part of everyday life.
15
Reinvesting in community As a non-profit, the only shareholders we have are the people who call this place home. It’s why we strive to put the needs of our neighbors first, and look for every opportunity to do more for our community. It’s both our responsibility and our privilege. And something everyone can feel better about, too.

STRENGTHENING our own Building on last year’s steady progress, Carilion launched Momentum, a new employee wellness campaign. With free FIT Rx 90 memberships at the Roanoke and Botetourt Athletic Clubs and RAC Xpress; and worksite wellness centers in Bedford, Lexington, and Rocky Mount, we’re exercising great habits.
17
Cultivating better diets Through a new payroll deduction program, we’re working to change our employees’ eating habits by encouraging them to purchase farm shares at the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital farmers’ table. Carilion Clinic is participating as well, funding a SNAP matching program that doubles each dollar used to purchase homegrown goods.
Serving smarter choices In 2013, Carilion took the Healthy Food in Health Care pledge. Along with offering healthier snack machine options and hydration stations with infused water, we’re also teaming up with local farmers and organizations to bring better and tastier options to the table.
Giving more back Whether they’re acting as a community partner for the March of Dimes or helping to strengthen health safety nets, you’ll find Carilion employees doing good wherever and whenever they can. And in the case of the 2013 American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, we took our commitment to the streets—500 employees raised $12,262 to help pioneer new treatments.

GIVING NEW MEANING to the art of healing While most see art as a form of personal expression, the Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley Healing Arts Program demonstrates our belief that it’s a force for healing, too. Our patients can tap the healing power of the arts through the program’s journaling, which helps them express emotion with words, and through the Healing Arts Garden, which offers them a place to stop and smell the roses (and wildflowers and fresh air). Plus, the Artists-in-Residence component enlists the talent of painters, writers, and musicians, such as Roanoke Symphony Orchestra cellist David Feldman. “Research is giving us confidence that what we are doing can help people on a fundamental level,” he says. And in the process, Carilion Clinic is transforming care in yet another important way.
Join right in The Healing Arts Program is funded solely by community contributions. To learn more about the program and how you can support it, visit CarilionClinic.org/healingarts or CarilionFoundation.org.

RECOGNIZED FOR THE TRUST WE EARN EVERY DAY. At Carilion Clinic, quality care is a given. Transforming the way it’s delivered is our singular goal. Still, we’re honored when respected organizations acknowledge our commitment, whether it’s the National Research Corporation’s Consumer Choice Award (Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital), or five-star ratings from Professional Research Corporation for overall quality of care for outpatient surgery (Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital) and OB/GYN (Carilion New River Valley Medical Center), or any of the other awards and certifications seen here. Every ranking and recognition is confirmation that we’re making good on our promise to provide exceptional care, every day.
Earning higher marks
Standing out statewide
It’s not easy to earn Magnet certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. In fact, each recertification becomes more stringent than the last. And it has been granted for the third time to Carilion Clinic’s Roanoke campus, which includes Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital.
After considering a host of factors and assessing 128 Virginia hospitals, U.S. News & World Report ranked Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital eighth overall— the only institution in southwest Virginia to appear in the top 10. It’s a proud moment that’s provided even more motivation for us to keep transforming care.

TOP Receiving top approval
Elevating community care
As the oldest and most widely recognized certification organization, the Joint Commission applies rigorous standards to healthcare organizations to ensure the highest possible level of care. This year, Carilion Clinic once again earned the Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for hip and knee replacement, heart attack, heart failure, and stroke care.
Our dedication to exceptional care drew the attention of Becker’s Hospital Review. Carilion Giles Community Hospital appeared on its national list of 100 Great Community Hospitals, earning top grades in patient safety and overall patient experience.
Taking the lead
Delivering exemplary results
Carilion is familiar with leadership that transforms teams and focuses passions. And this year, our president and CEO, Nancy Howell Agee, was recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review on its list of 300 Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know. For those who work closely with her, this honor was no surprise.
Hip and knee replacements are sophisticated procedures and, according to Medicare’s Hospital Compare website, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital ranks better than the national rate, along with only 95 other hospitals nationally and among just four in Virginia.

Gifts that transform. Philanthropic support from our community enhances Carilion Clinic’s ability to provide excellence in healthcare. The focus of the Carilion Clinic Foundation is to provide resources for equipment, programs, and services that otherwise would not be possible. Every donor to the Foundation plays an essential role in accomplishing more good and improving lives. Thank you to the following donors for their annual contributions to the Carilion Clinic Foundation from January 1 to December 31, 2013.
