Living proof How acting fast saved Jonathan White When Jonathan White experienced a stroke, he was airlifted aboard Carilion Clinic’s Life-Guard helicopter. Communications and transmission of data during the flight to interventional radiologist Jeffery Shay, M.D., allowed the team in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital’s stroke unit to prepare for a CT scan that revealed the exact position of Jonathan’s clot. Dr. Shay then injected tPA to dissolve the clot and performed a thrombectomy using a new FDA-approved device to break up and remove clots in the blood vessels of Jonathan’s brain. Jonathan is expected to make a complete recovery, thanks to the cooperation of everyone involved in his care and the technology that connected them.

The stroke unit at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is certified by The Joint Commission for our commitment to the highest quality standards.

“We have embarked on a transformational journey to markedly improve health and well-being.” – Edward G. Murphy, M.D. President and CEO

Wayne Baran gets back in the game New program keeps patients out of the hospital While undergoing a regular colonoscopy, Wayne Baran learned that his heart was beating strangely. The next thing he knew, he was scheduled for a stress test and immediately sent to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Tests revealed that Wayne’s heart was pumping at only 10 percent of capacity. Wayne was given a defibrillator and a pacemaker to help regulate his heart and a referral to Carilion Clinic’s Heart Failure Clinic. There he received individualized treatment that included support for symptom management, nutrition and medication education, as well as an exercise program. As part of the program, he’s now working out five days a week, enjoying weightlifting and playing basketball with friends.

Improving health one patient at a time Being among the first in the nation to provide the most advanced life-saving care like that used in the cases of Jonathan White and Wayne Baran fulfills our primary mission. But we must also be good stewards of the healthcare dollar by delivering the most efficient care. With that philosophy as our foundation, in 2006 we began

A new way of caring “Medical home” strengthens doctor-patient bond We recognize that putting the patient truly first in today’s environment requires innovative restructuring of traditional healthcare delivery. That’s why Carilion Clinic is transforming our primary care practices into “medical homes.” In a medical home, a team of healthcare professionals, led by a doctor, proactively cares for each patient. Imagine getting a phone call or an e-mail from your doctor asking you how you’re feeling or how your new blood pressure medication is working. And what if you could check your medical records and request a doctor’s appointment as easily as you check your e-mail or update your status on Facebook? We’re also working with The Brookings Institution and The Dartmouth Institute

Medical information at your fingertips Carilion Clinic is bringing the speed and convenience of online communication to healthcare. Through the use of MyChart®, patients now have a convenient new way to communicate with their doctor’s office. MyChart provides secure online access to portions of patients’ electronic medical records, allowing them to renew prescriptions, view test results, send messages or request an appointment.

for Health Policy and Clinical Practice to pilot a new national payment model known as “accountable care” that makes it financially feasible to keep patients healthy, improve outcomes, and avoid costly medications and procedures. These new approaches are among the ways Carilion is working to bring real change to healthcare.

Lifting the burden of complexity and confusion No longer do patients have to navigate a maze of fragmented systems, trying to understand the complicated relationships between hospitals and doctors. Led by our team of Carilion Clinic Physicians, we are streamlining care delivery and aligning physicians and hospitals toward a singular goal: delivering the best possible health outcome for each patient. Primary care physicians serve as the gateway to our fully integrated team of specialists, tech-

Electronic medical records improve patient care and safety Carilion Clinic is one of the first healthcare organizations in the country to transition from paper patient records to electronic medical records (EMR). Our new EMR system brings together patients’ medical records in one place, providing doctors at all Carilion facilities easy access to their patients’ most upto-date and accurate records. The electronic medical record is an essential tool to improving patient care because it allows members of the patient’s healthcare team to communicate and collaborate more effectively for the patient’s benefit. Carilion ranks 18th in the country on Modern Healthcare’s list of the most integrated health networks and among Hospitals & Health Networks “100 Most Wired.”

Among our achievements are: • The Gold Seal of Approval by The Joint Commission for both stroke care and orthopaedics at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. • Two-time designation of Carilion’s Roanoke hospitals as Magnet facilities by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the gold standard of nursing and patient care. • Consumer Choice #1 award for healthcare quality by the National Research Corp. for Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. • Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home, Carilion Clinic Family Medicine – Vinton from the National Committee for Quality Assurance. • National Quality Award from the National Committee for Quality Healthcare.
