Carilion Clinic Nurse Residency Program EMPOWERING NURSES THROUGH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

NRP REQUIREMENTS

All new graduate nurses who have passed boards and nurses with less than a year of experience are automatically enrolled in the NRP. To succeed, participants must: »» Attend all nurse residency sessions »» Participate actively in an evidence-based practice project »» Complete all course evaluations and surveys »» Fulfill all obligations as a member of the professional nursing staff on assigned clinical unit

NRP CURRICULUM Carilion Medical Center has joined Vizient and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) to offer a year-long nurse residency program (NRP) to new nursing graduates and nurses with less than one year of experience. The NRP will be provided in addition to existing hospital and unit-based clinical orientation. The evidence-based curriculum focuses on leadership, quality outcomes and professional roles to facilitate participants’ transition to competent professional nurses in a fastpaced health care environment. Through the development of a supportive cohort and access to online support and professional networking, NRP participants develop: »» Increased career satisfaction »» Deeper professional commitment »» Confidence and decision making skills »» Critical thinking and leadership skills

The curriculum fosters critical thinking and leadership skills to promote optimal patient safety and care. Resident facilitators will assist with nurse resident development through monthly four-hour cohort sessions that cover two to three topics in the areas of leadership, quality outcomes and professional roles. Leadership topics include: »» Patient care delivery, resource management and delegation »» Interprofessional communication »» Conflict resolution »» Patient care coordination

Quality outcomes topics include: »» Safety and quality »» Management of the changing patient condition »» Patient and family education »» Pain management »» Skin integrity and wound management »» Fall prevention »» Medication administration »» Infection prevention and control Professional roles topics include: »» Ethical decision making »» End-of-life care »» Cultural competence in the nursing care environment »» Stress management and self-care »» Evidence-based practice »» Professional development Cohort sessions also include group discussions that allow nurse residents to share clinical experiences and discover new resolutions and resources. Nurse residents will be assigned to a small group and remain with the group for the duration of the program. A resident facilitator will lead the group and act as mentor, encouraging nurse residents to share frustrations and fears as well as successes. Each nurse resident will participate individually or in a small group to develop an evidence-based practice project. The goal is to plan and implement a project that will positively impact nursing practice and patient care. Time will be provided during cohort sessions to complete the projects. Completed projects will be presented as part of the residency graduation celebration.
