ISSUE NO. 7 NEWSLETTER august-september 2012
august-september 2012
letter from carina Since our last newsletter, I have attended two tradeshows, introduced a new sewing pattern and fabric line, ended my Tips for Rockin’ Illustrator series at JessicaSprague.com, revived a series of digital products entitled “Vintage Carina,” and was part of the launch of a brand new paper company, Carta Bella. To top off all these wonderful creative endeavors, I also announced that I was

expecting baby #3. Our household has been busy to say the least. Despite the busy schedules, I have gone out of my way to have my camera handy for all the wonderful moments. At the very last minute (to be precise— two days before giving birth), I decided I would regret not having a few photos showcasing my pregnant belly. The photo above comes to you from that last minute photoshoot.
You’ll notice this issue is filled with a lot of images and a lot less text. This is proof that there was a lot of time spent behind the camera. I hope you enjoy seeing what we were/ are up to at Carta Bella, in my studio (the promised photos are in this issue!), and get your own creative juices flowing.

photo opt in Carina’s Studio Photographed by Carina Gardner, Susan Haglund, and Josh Gardner I have been promising a sneak peek into my studio for some time now! So here it is...my small space where a lot of magic happens. These photographs were taken in varying stages of my recent pregnancy. How small is the space, you ask? The studio is about 9 ft x 11 ft which means every bit of space must be functional. In order to accommodate all the paper, fabric, accounting files, sketchbooks, computers and sewing machines, every piece of furnture offers storage and/ or surface space. Inventory (like CG Sewing Patterns, paper samples, and fabric samples) are stored outside the studio. The main piece of furnture in the room is a Kimball office desk that I repainted turquoise. I found this piece at an antique store in Salt Lake City.
page 17
Meetings, kid-time, scrapbooking, sewing, and many late nights of designing all happen at this desk. My favorite wall is behind the desk. The wallpaper is a recolored master fabric print from my Songbird™ Collection. The Great Wall (www.greatwallonline. com) prints all my wallpapers including the one in my studio and my tradeshow wallpapers. From the red chandelier to the Bertoia chair to the comfy reupholstered wingback chair, everything in this studio is either “functional” or “beautiful” (thank you, William Morris). Despite the small space, I still managed to squeeze in four chairs, a six-foot desk, and four different dresser/drawer pieces (one is under the table). It is a wonderful place to work, play, and be creative! Enjoy!
