welcome
Welcome to
The St. Francis of Assisi coat of arms consists of two arms crossing each other, with a radiating cross in between. One arm is that of Jesus Christ; the other is of St. Francis of Assisi, represented by the brown sleeve of the Franciscan Habit. Both hands are marked with wounds received from being nailed on the cross. St. Francis was not crucified, but instead received what is called the “stigmata,” or bodily marks, sores, or sensations of pain in locations corresponding to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ. This image is a key identity badge for the Franciscan Religious Order all over the world and an important reminder of our patron, who intercedes for our parish. The cross symbolizes our call to radiate God’s love to the world through prayer and evangelization.

At first, it was rough maintaining the parish, with 11 different priests serving over the first 12 years. In 1961, Fr. Baltasar Szarka, affectionately called Fr. B, became our first pastor. A native of Hungary, Fr. B was a Cistercian priest whose order settled in Irving in 1956. He would lovingly serve our Church for 36 years before retiring in 1997. The original church was never considered permanent, but it served the community for 37 years. In 1983, the current 10 acre site was purchased, and by March 1985, we had a new church complete with classrooms, a parish hall, meeting rooms, a chapel, and a church to seat 600. The orginal 25 founding families presented the keys of the Church to Bishop Delaney at its dedication. In 1999, the continued growth of the parish required another expansion. In 2000, the Family Life Center was completed and in 2001 our current church, which seats over 1100, was dedicated on the Feast of St. Francis, in conjunction with our Community Fest. In an effort to preserve a bit of our past, the stained glass windows of the original mission church were repurposed in the Parish Hall. Fr. Ken Robinson served as pastor from August 1997 to December 2006, guiding us through our expansion and remodeling. Fr. Ahn Tran served as pastor of our parish from May 2007 to June 2013, helping us grow our Hispanic Ministry. In August 2013, Fr. James Flynn, our current pastor arrived, bringing a new vision to “Rebuild My Church. He has worked tirelessly to rebuild the mission of our church, expanding our Catechesis and Evangelization Programs and making the education of our youth and outreach to the wider community priorities. This revitalization is manifested in the presence of NET Missionaries, our SEEK program, and the addition of over 325 families each year.

PARISH HISTORY & FACTS
In the 1940s, the city of Grapevine was mostly farmland; Catholics were the minority, with the only churches in Dallas and Fort Worth. By the late 1940s, however, the desire for a local Catholic Church inspired 25 Catholic families to get together for an organizational meeting. They collected a $5,000 gift from the Catholic Extension Society that promotes Catholic missions and another $5,000 from fundraisers and a pledge drive. In 1949, the original St. Francis Catholic Church opened its doors in Grapevine, only sitting 250 people.

Our Mission
Holy Trinity Catholic School, a ministry of Good Shepherd, St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Michael parishes, nurtures the gifts and talents of each child by proving an enriched and challenging environment within a prayerful, inviting Catholic community. Jesus Christ and the Blessed Mother are our perfect models as we teach the Gospel and form faithfulcitizens who learn, serve and lead.
Our Curriculum
The primary goal of Holy Trinity Catholic School is the development of the whole child - mind, body, and spirit - in light of his/her own faith journey and responsibility towards society. Teachers are sensitized to the spiritual, intellectual, social and physical needs of each child, and the ideal of educating the whole child permeates every classroom and activity. The religion program, presented in the Catholic tradition, is centered on Gospel values and service to others. Our enriched curriculum exceeds the minimum standards established by the State of Texas and provides age-appropriate rigor within a loving and respectful community. Every student is provided the opportunity to maximize his or her educational potential in a well-structured and safe environment. For more information on Holy Trinity Catholic School, visit holytcs.org or contact their Admission Coordinator, Mary Settlemier at 817-421-8000 x 121 or msettlemier@holytcs.org.

Here at St. Francis, we take to heart Christ’s call to go out and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:16-20). Disciples are those who have experienced a life-changing personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We want all of our parish members to experience this relationship. Through purposeful steps of membership into our Christian community, we provide opportunities to begin this relationship with Jesus Christ. This relationship then reaches maturity through intentional spiritual growth, called catechesis. Finally, in order to deepen both the relationship with Christ and His Catholic Church, disciples are entrusted to build up the community through the ministry of the Church and bring Christ to the world by embracing the mission of the Church.

BAPTISM
Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments (CCC 1213). St. Francis encourages parents to have their children baptised as infants, establishing the importance of our faith in their lives through teaching, prayer, and example. The preparation course for parents and godparents is offered monthly, and baptisms can be celebrated during regularly scheduled masses or a monthly communal celebration. Adults or children over the age of 7 seeking Baptism do so through the RCIA process.
FIRST RECONCILIATION & HOLY EUCHARIST
Children in second grade or higher that have been baptized are eligible to prepare to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. Before beginning attendance in Sacrament Preparation Classes, a child needs to have a basic knowledge of our faith which is usually obtained through at least one year of catechesis. After the child has this basic knowledge, it is important that they continue their spiritual education through ongoing catechesis. In addition to that continuing catechesis, the child along with their parent(s) will attend classes that specifically prepare them to receive their sacraments. Three Sacrament Preparation classes will be held in the fall semester and three in the spring semester to complete their preparation. After their preparation is complete, we will assess their readiness to receive the sacraments along with their parents.
CONFIRMATION
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA)
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is the process by which a non-Catholic adult learns about the Catholic faith and is given the opportunity to join the Catholic Church. RCIA includes evenings of catechesis, where you will learn the basic truths of the Catholic faith and a deeper understanding of the dissimilarities between Catholic theology and non-Catholic theology. The process also includes two morning retreats and biblical reflection on Sundays. RCIA is intended for those over the age of 18, and separate programs of sacramental preparation are available for youth and teens seeking the sacraments.
Youth Catechesis K-6 Children’s Catechesis
The mission of the Kindergarten through 6th grade Catechesis Program is to bring alive the faith of our children through their natural curiosity and desire for truth while demonstrating God’s love to them so that they may return that love with enthusiasm throughout their lives. Classes are offered on Wednesday afternoons and Sunday mornings.
Young Church (Middle School & High School) The mission of the middle school and high school catechesis program is to raise up a Young Church of missionary disciples by reaching the poor and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. Middle School Young Church nights happen on Wednesdays and High School Young Church nights are Sundays. Young Church also hosts summer events, retreats, discipleship groups, service opportunities, and other fun activiites.
