This book was created as part of Introduction to Design in the Fall of 2015 at St. Norbert College. It is typeset in SignPainter and Minion Pro. The illustrations were created with watercolor and digitally created using Adobe Photoshop.

This is Zada and she is six years old. She lives in a place called Syria with her mom and dad.

She likes swimming, playing with dolls and building sandcastles. Zada is just like you.

In Syria there is a lot of fighting. When Zada sleeps in her bed, she hears loud bangs and people yelling. These noises scare her.

Zada’s parents decide that her house is not safe, so Zada’s family has to leave Syria. Zada does not want to leave her friends and she is very sad.

The next day, Zada’s parents put a few of their belongings in a backpack. Zada says goodbye to her friends and cries when she hugs them.

Zada’s family travels to the seashore and gets in a little boat. Zada is afraid of the cold water around the little boat when it splashes over the edge.

After two nights of sleeing in the little boat, Zada wakes up and sees land far away. When the little boat gets to the land, Zada’s parents tell her that this is where they will live now, a place called Greece.

Zada does not like Greece because the people she meets do not speak the same language as her family. Zada’s family lives in a smelly building with lots of people who came to Greece in a boat just like her.

Zada’s family gets to move out of the smelly building after two weeks and they live in a little white house. Zada likes the white house much better than the smelly building but she still misses Syria.

When Zada goes to sleep at night, she dreams that she is back in Syria with her friends. Maybe, one day, Zada’s dream will come true.
