GREEN HEART VILLAGE RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT 2021/22 | Kilifi, Kenya

6

house design have been conceived with climate in mind, analyzing local winds and orientation to ensure natural ventilation and thermal comfort.

The Green Heart Village is a part of the bigger Green Heart of Kenya project, a new regenerative town and productive landscape development spreading across 750 acres, comprising of different land uses, and located in Kilifi, on the Kenyan coast.

Moreover, the Masterplan prioritizes the presence and circulation of animals and humans first, reducing car circulation to the minimum. Community areas and green corridors throughout the whole development ensure this.

The Green Heart Village represents the residential and first part of the development and comprises of highquality affordable middle-income housing. It will foresee the presence of three different houses typologies: 3 bedroom, 2 bedroom and 1 bedroom houses, that incorporate sustainable design principles, such as general principles of design in harmony with nature, climate and people, as well as the choice of locally-sourced and appropriate building materials, such as: Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks, timber, coral stone and sisal poles.

As part of my internship at BuildX Studio, Nairobi, I have been personally involved in the project for the majority of its development, from Preliminary Design to the end of Developed Design, producing drawings, supporting design ideas and changes, 3D modeling for professional renders, as well as helping the Phase 1 Masterplan come to life. I have also had the chance to visit the project site in Kilifi and the materials and building techniques mock-ups developed near the site.

The first phase of the residential development will comprise of 16 houses. The masterplan and overall

PRIMARY SCHOOL

FOR VISUALLY-IMPAIRED PUPILS 2020 | Kobo Robit, Ethiopia

16

The project is the expansion of an existing school for visually impaired children. The school extension is set to host nine-hundred and sixty new students. Among these, fifty-nine are visually impaired. Low vision and blindness are very common in SubSaharan Africa, and dramatically common in Ethiopia, especially among children.

extension is based horizontal axe constituted by the walking path connecting the entrance on the West side and the existing school wing on East side. The eight classrooms are all perpendicular to this central walking path, paired in groups of two and slid on one another, in order to create outdoor shadowed space at the entrance of each room. The walking passage is also semi-transparent and shaded by bamboo sticks, as well as the vertical axes connecting the vegetable garden on the South side with the toilets and dorms on the North side. These shaded outdoor spaces allow the presence of playgrounds for the pupils, as well as seats for outdoor classes.

The task was to design the extension of a secondary school, therefore hosting students between 15 and 18 years old, on a plot right next to it, able to offer education to 960 additional pupils. The brief of the project included the design of eight classrooms with sixty seats each, a dorm to host 80 pupils and some additional service spaces, such as school staff offices, a guardroom, a canteen with kitchen and a study room.

The project foresees the use of different techniques: mashrabiyas, as natural ventilation strategy, adobe bricks for the walls and vaults of classrooms, offices, library and canteen, as well as rammed earth and nubian vaults for the dormitories.

To offer additional education opportunity, a didactic vegetable garden was also foreseen on the South side of the new classrooms. The whole masterplan of the school

(IN)FORMAL CITY GRID SLUM UPGRADING MALHANGALENE B 2020 | Maputo, Mozambique

24

The project lot is in an intermediate position between the “formal” city (South and East), dating back to the colonial period, and the “informal” city (North and West). The area has very marked boundaries and is surrounded by two main arteries connecting Maputo CBD with peripheral areas, nearby cities (Matola), and important services (airport).

the conditions for obtaining the DUAT (the right to use and benefit of land). The first step consists in improving the accessibility to the lot through the creation of safer connections with the surrounding streets, the neighbourhoods, and the public transportation system. The attention is then dedicated to bringing the city grid into the lot improving its two main axes. They will be enlarged, paved, and provided with a drainage system. The densification process allows the creation of public spaces along the roads usable by the population and by small local commercial activities.

The project aim is to progressively bring the “formal” grid in the informal settlement without disrupting the internal dynamics of the lot and providing the inhabitants with

MAPUTO ANALYSIS

purposes. At a provincial scale some dams, hydropower and power plants are present. The energy grid generating from Maputo extends towards South, North and West. Considering Maputo, comparing the urban population growth, we can observe how the more peripheral expansions tend to be in the same direction of the energy grids. Due to the probable informal nature of settlements on the peripheral expansion, we can expect that this is due to provide informal shelters a connection with the energy grid. Indeed, in the city center 97% of the households have electricity, especially in the formal part of the city. However, also in the informal and peripheral areas around 50% of the houses are registered as having electricity, mostly along the electric grid.

The analysis has been the resut of a urban planning workshop within the programme of the “Design for Development” master. Maps were produced showing demographics and the difference between the population in 2007 and in 2018 at a provincial scale. We can observe that there was a general increase in the population, especially in the Maputo urban center and toward North. In the same areas, an increase in the density was osbserved. At an urban scale, the city and the built environment are expanding towards North and towards Matola (West of Maputo). For what concerns water and energy systems, the whole country is innervated with a network of water streams. Many dams are present, and they are used for different

LINKED LAZARAT

A PATH TO RECONNECTION 2019 | Lazarat, Albania

36

The project is a team work developed during the one-week workshop of Cultural Heritage within the context of the Design for Development Master. The project analized the critical and disadvantaged situation of Lazarat, Albania, in relatoon to the close and much more famous Gjirokastër. It foresees the creatoon of a path linking the two sites, reopening an existing ancient path, in order to promote the points of interest of Lazarat, and change

the narrative around it. Linked Lazarat comprises the creation of recreational spots along the path, as well as informative and interactive panels. The targeted users are the so-called “slow tourists” of the Gjirokastër region, that would likely spend aday out of the town for a short excursion. The projects foresees the involvement of local students and the creation of new job opportunities.

TACTICAL URBANISM @ AURORA DISTRICT 2019 | Udine, Italy

42

The project aims at activating Udine’s Aurora district to involve inhabitants for its future transformation. The proposal is a systems working in phases that activates ways of relating spaces of the district with its inhabitants. The aim is to connect the space and the people through playful activities, planned in an incremental way, with an open view on experimental, bottomup practices, able to evolve. The playful approach and the proposed

activities can be effective tools to trigger curiosity and interest as base for more structured and deep actions, starting from the schools in order to firstly intecept families, and then all inhabitants. “Ribaltare l’Aurora!” also foresees an action of hacking the consolidated image of the town, in order to stimulate and free the imagination towards possible transformations with the help of inhabitants, becoming active actors of change.

CARNIVAL TABLE

HELLO WOOD CARNIVAL EDITION 2019 | Csórompuszta, Hungary

46

The Carnival Table is the project realized during Hello Wood Festival 2019, where I participated as a student and construction volunteer. It is a puzzle-like giant table where the single pieces become masks representing the individual students, where as the recomposed whole will provide a Carnival banquet, inviting guests to explore an archipelago of

different forms, postures, symbols. “The Carnival Table is at once about the individual and the collective, its creators concerned of the modern issues surrounding migration yet hoping to express a more pleasant view of the topic through each of our own varied connections with food and culture”.1

NON-GENDER PAVILION

FOR LGBT+ COMMUNITY CAMP 2019 | Roskilde, Denmark

50

This project aimed at building a pavilion at the Roskilde Festival through a series of short workshops. “Unicorny Camp, a collective under LGBT+ Youth Denmark, invited EAHR to build a pavilion, with the aim to present a wider perspective of the current discussion around gender and identity. [...] This pavilion is a fixed structure in timber, with

a removable textile covering. This removable element could change year by year to fit the needs of Unicorny Camp in future festivals. Some materials for wrapping the timber pieces could be textile, paper, cardboard, painting, or others.” (EAHR). I took part in the first workshop, and helped to build the foundations.

URBAN FURNITURE “PARKLETT” IN SALZBURG 2019 | Salzburg, Austria

54

The “parklett” is a temporary piece of urban furniture aiming at occupying a parking lot. The team engaged in a one-week construction workshop to realize this installation that comprehends a three-levels seats

and a small stage for gathering, improvised singing and playing sessions as well as little informal concerts. The parklett was installed in the city of Salzburg for two weeks, in June 2019.

SITTING ON

MULTIFUNCTIONAL BENCH 2018 | San Cataldo, Italy

58

“Sitting on acts as a physical and contextual link to San Cataldo’s waterfront. Reminiscent of La Casa del Surfista, a landmark along San Cataldo’s coastline. The structure’s arches serve as a starting point for the formal and functional framework of the installation: various seating typologies, public services (green element, waste

disposal, bike storage) and a play area (sculpt and climb) define the space. The multifunctional structure aims to connect the street to the sea whilst integrating the existing infrastructure and various groups of people within a dynamic synthesis between regenerative architecture and a coastal identity.”2

THE ARCH

MONUMENT FOR GENK 2017 | Genk, Belgium

62

I participated in the two-weeks building festival to build a monument called “The Arch” for the town of Genk, Belgium. The workshop was organized by architecture collective Constructlab. The wooden structure was already built and was used as accommodation for the volunteers and, most importantly, as a supporting structure to the arch. The monument was made out of

recycled pastic, provided by a local company. Moreover, the decoration of the arch was made with tiles out of recycled plastic bottles caps, melted and shaped as squares. The process included participation of the local inhabitants, which came to the site and produced their own tiles, which were also numbered for being recognized after the completion.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM SET UP 2017 | Salerno, Italy

66

During the 2017 summer internship at the architecture studio Project 2.0, I developed this temporary set up for the outdoor space of the Archeological Museum of my town, Salerno. The budget was very low, so together with the rest of the

studio we decided to use pallets, configuring different seat heights, and green spaces. The set up stayed like that for 3 months, hosting conferences, music events and presentations.

REGENERATING UTOPIA

BACHELOR THESIS 2017 | Consonno, Italy

70

The graduation project is the final achievement of a lot of proposals for the abandoned area of Consonno (see; Coworking space”). In this case the whole village has been considered as a possible theatre and cinema pole, including an outdoor theatre, a movie festival, a drive-in area and a building for theatre or cinema related classes and workshops. The focus of my thesis was on the accomodation: one building hosting double rooms

for actors and directors, one hosting rooms for kids and a third one for high school classes. The existing buildinds were renovated with sustainable development principles in mind, so a ventilated wall was applied to the existing walls, a new ventilated roof applied and trees planted in strategic spots in order to cover the sun where needed to avoid hyper warming. The project includes a social carpentry, vegetable gardens and a tiny biomass power plant.

SHOWCASE BAR

BAR FOR AN ART GALLERY 2016 | Halle, Germany

80

The “Showcase bar” has been my Erasmus work at the Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule in Halle, Germany. The task stated that the bar would be underground, and the empty oorplan was given. The Showcase bar is an espresso bar which is placed under an art gallery, and therefore addressed to artists, critics, collectors and visitors. It aims to put the user under the spotlight, so that it’s not art that is showcased, but people. For this purpose, the user needs to step up a 25cm

high marble platform to reach the counter, finding themselves in the middle of a frame which is visible from above, from the people visiting the art gallery, putting the client in the cente of attention. At the same time, the people walking through the gallery throw their shadow on the bar tables and counter. All around the marble platform, there’s a more informal area, with pillow seats, for people intending to see rather than be seen.

LIVING LAKE

MULTIFUNCTIONAL HARBOUR 2016 | Lecco, Italy

86

Giving a new life to Lecco’s lakeside of Como’s lake was the brief of this project. Four main areas were chosen to be offering all the equipment required to sail, ski, dive, windsurf and so on. The main focus of the project was on the Seasonal Area, which has been thought as an everchanging part of the harbour hosting a different activity every season. It will be an outdoor

gym in spring, with sustainable equipment that generates energy from the users’s movement; a public vegetable garden foe all the citizens to cultivate in summer; a wood workshop in autumn, while in winter a campaign against the waste of water will be organized, with VR visors showing how the lake would be if all the water would be gone.

REGENARATING CO-WORKING 2016 | Consonno, Italy

94

The project is a first proposal towards the purpose of giving a new life to the small village of Consonno, in the Lecco province, Italy. Among the 8 buildings, the biggest one has been chosen to become a coworking center for people from different education and sectors to collaborate in a productive way. The first floor is devided in different areas: research, concept, check, samples, executive drawings and visualizations, communication, contacts. Concept

area has been imagined with a completely convered tatami floor, screens and glass sliding panels to let people sketch on them and find the best solution. The “check” area includes a room painted with choackboard paint to let users verify the project in 1:1 scale. In the samples area, materials as well as color samples slide to make it easier for one to check good or bad combinations.

EXHIBITION SPACE 2015 | Milan, Italy

The project aims at designing a new exhibition center to be placed inside of Indro Montanelli gardens in Milan, facing the Gallery of Modern Art. The space has been devided in three buildings, one hosting a conference hall and bookshop, the other two configuring the path

where artworks will be showcased. The buildings have been thought as series of arcs depicting a geometrc landscpe in contrast with nature around and the inclusion of the preexhistant trees in the chosen area of the gardens.
